Pope Sixtus IV, the chapel’s namesake, commissioned its construction in the late 15th century. Today, its best-known use is for the papal conclaves, the process through which a new pope is elected by the College of Cardinals. It also serves as the Pope’s own private chapel when he is at the Vatican.

The Vatican is a religious site, and official rules mandate that visitors dress appropriately or risk being turned away. All guests regardless of gender are required to keep their shoulders and knees covered. In warmer months, it’s useful to have a shawl, scarf, or light jacket handy to pull on when entering the Vatican if your outfit doesn’t meet the dress code standards. Additionally, hats are not allowed.

While the Vatican dress code doesn’t have any hard-and-fast rules regarding footwear, keep in mind that you’ll be doing a lot of walking on your Vatican tour. As long as you have comfortable shoes that are good for walking, you’re all set.

You’ll focus on this vast collection of art before reaching the Sistine Chapel, frescoed by Michelangelo, Perugino, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli and considered by many the most famous and important masterpiece of Western Art.

A direct passage will easily take you inside the magnificent Basilica of Saint Peter, where your guide will share the secrets behind the Burial of Saint Peter, Bernini’s Baldachin and Michelangelo’s Pietà. Leaving the Church, gripped by all this beauty, you’ll be welcomed in Saint Peter’s Square by stunning statues of the Apostles, Saints and Martires dominating the façade of the Basilica and Bernini’s Colonnato.

How To Visit Vatican City In Italy In Half A Day

If you are travelling to Rome, you can’t miss visiting Vatican City. Vatican City is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and the home of the Pope. While it is a religious symbol for many, it is also a very amusing cultural visit for non-Catholic tourists. 

The Vatican Museums house a large range of art; from Roman sculptures to ancient paintings, and the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling . In addition, the buildings at Vatican City are already extremely amusing by themselves!

The Vatican has A LOT to see. However, for those travelers who are on a tight schedule, we recommend spending only a full morning here and seeing the monuments that interest you the most. While some people would rather spend a whole day exploring this area, we suggest visiting the Vatican Museums first, followed by St. Peter’s Basilica, which can all be done in the same morning.

Vatican Museums

If you are keen to see the famous Sistine Chapel , you will have to pay for entry to the Vatican Museums. To visit these, you will have to wake up early to ensure that you don’t waste your morning queuing to get in. In addition, ensure to buy tickets in advance that enable you to skip the large queues! You can buy your tickets from the official Vatican website . Ignore the fact that the website looks old and dodgy! It’s the official site and the best place to get your tickets for The Vatican. 

Travel Tip : We recommend that you book the first slot available as this will be the least crowded time and it will enable you to utilize the rest of the morning to see the other spots in The Vatican.

St. Peter’s Basilica

After visiting the Vatican Museums, we headed to the beautiful Piazza San Pietro. Here, you’ll see a long queue to enter St. Peter’s basilica. Start queuing ASAP before it gets too long – The more into the day, the longer the queue gets! 

Travel Trip: There are lots of tourist guides in this spot trying to sell guided tours for the Basilica that allow you to skip the queue. However, we wouldn’t recommend this unless you are very interested in learning about the history of the place. This is because not only the entrance to this place is free, but also because, while the queue seems very long, it moves quite fast! We only waited for 20 minutes. I would assume that the waiting time becomes longer in the summer months though. 

Once you are inside the Basilica, we highly recommend going up inside St Peter’s dome. This is an extraordinary experience and the views from the top are fantastic!

To access this part of St Peter’s Basilica you must pay for entrance. Please note that this ticket needs to be paid in-situ and they won’t accept any other tickets for it! So if you see someone selling these types of tickets outside or online, be aware that it is a scam.

The dome of St Peter’s basilica is the t allest dome in the world at 136 metres. When visiting, you’ll find that it is split into two levels: One where you can see the inside of the church from the above and the second, tallest point, from where you have a magnificent view of Vatican City from the sky. 

There are two ways of going up to the first level: Taking a lift or climbing 231 steps . It costs 8 euros to climb and 10 euros to take the lift. 

To access the top level, however, you must climb another 320 steps . 

 While this might seem like quite a lot, we found it just fine to climb the whole way through! It might be harder for older visitors, in which case we recommend taking the lift to the first level. 

Make sure to visit early if you are a slow climber and don’t want to feel overwhelmed by having a queue behind you on the stairs – these are very small and tight and only fit one person at a time!

By the time you finish seeing these two places it will be time to have a late-ish lunch. This gives you the whole of the afternoon to go an explore the beautiful centre of Rome!

Vatican by train: Springtime trips to the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo

It is called the Train of the Pontifical Villas , but has been affectionately baptized “ the Pope’s arrow ”. It is the convoy that from Saturday 2 April , after the break imposed by the health emergency, will resume connecting the Vatican to Castel Gandolfo and Albano Laziale , again enabling visits to the summer residence of the Popes, the "second Vatican", whose rare beauty and riches were made available to the community in 2014 by Pope Francis, who strongly wished to open to the public the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo, the Apostolic Palace and its lush gardens. With the arrival of the warm season, every Saturday, until 29 October (excluding 16 April), and with the additional dates of Monday 25 April and Thursday 2 June , it will be possible to spend an entire day among nature, art and good food. A rich and unique offering (in Italian and English) with "departure" from the Vatican Museums (which may be visited with an audio-guide), continuing to the Vatican Gardens (audio-guide included) and, then, beginning the journey by train from the old Vatican City Railway Station : destination Albano Laziale with shuttle transfer to the Pontifical Villas. Visitors and their families (with special rates) will be welcomed by a comfortable tour with audio-guide of the Villa Barberini Gardens on a panoramic eco-friendly vehicle. At the end of the tour, and upon request, an inviting lunch of typical products will be served in the Padiglione del Riposo , the Refreshments Pavilion. For the return home, everyone will meet at 04.30/04.45 p.m.: a shuttle bus will take passengers to Castel Gandolfo station in order to board the train, due to arrive at about 06.30 p.m., at the Roma San Pietro train station .

The Italians are known for their classic espresso, and at  Caffé Dei Papi , you can order one and choose from a wide selection of pastries. The Ad Hoc Ristorante in Piazza del Popolo has an exceptional menu and a wine list with more than 1,000 Italian wines to select from. One traveler on Tripadvisor  praises the divine truffle tasting menu at the restaurant and perfectly paired wines. To note, the Ad Hoc offers two locations, each with the same menu, but the newer location in Circus Maximus features an outdoor terrace. A reservation will likely be required to dine at either.

Another location to consider is Crispi 19 , which is located in the historical center of Rome. You will find this restaurant between the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, a perfect location for dinner before an evening stroll through the city. VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican crossed a key milestone Thursday in the runup to its 2025 Jubilee with the promulgation of the official decree establishing the Holy Year. It’s a once-every-quarter-century event that is expected to bring some 32 million pilgrims to Rome and has already brought months of headaches to Romans.

Pope Francis presided over a ceremony in the atrium of St. Peter’s Basilica for the reading of the papal bull, or official edict, that laid out his vision for a year of hope: He asked for gestures of solidarity for the poor, prisoners, migrants and Mother Nature.

“Hope is needed by God’s creation, gravely damaged and disfigured by human selfishness,” Francis said in a vigil service afterward. “Hope is needed by those peoples and nations who look to the future with anxiety and fear.”

The pomp-filled event, attended by cardinals, bishops and ordinary faithful, kicked off the final seven-month dash of preparations and public works projects to be completed by Dec. 24, when Francis opens the basilica’s Holy Door and formally inaugurates the Jubilee.

In a novelty, Francis announced in the papal bull that he would also open a Holy Door in a prison “as a sign inviting prisoners to look to the future with hope and a renewed sense of confidence.”

For the Vatican, the Holy Year is a centuries-old tradition of the faithful making pilgrimages to Rome to visit the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul, and receiving indulgences for the forgiveness of their sins in the process. For the city of Rome, it’s a chance to take advantage of some 4 billion euros ($4.3 billion) in public funds to carry out long-delayed projects to lift the city out of years of decay and neglect.

“In a beautiful city, you live better,” said the Vatican’s Jubilee point-person, Archbishop Renato Fisichella, who himself is not indifferent to the added bonus of Jubilee funding. “Rome will become an even more beautiful city, because it will be ever more at the service of its people, pilgrims and tourists who will come.”

Pope Boniface VIII declared the first Holy Year in 1300, and now they are held every 25 years. While Francis called an interim one devoted to mercy in 2015 , the 2025 edition is the first big one since St. John Paul II’s 2000 Jubilee, when he ushered the Catholic Church into the third millennium.

As occurred in the runup to 2000, pre-Jubilee public works projects have overwhelmed Rome, with flood-lit construction sites operating around the clock, entire swaths of central boulevards rerouted and traffic snarling the city’s already clogged streets.

The Tiber riverfront for much of the city center is now off limits as work crews create new parks. Piazzas are being repaved, bike paths charted and 5G cells built. The aim is to bring the Eternal City up to par with other European capitals and take advantage of the 1.3 billion euros ($1.4 billion) in special Jubilee funding and some 3 billion euros ($3.2 billion) more in other public and post-pandemic EU funds that are available.

“It’s really putting our patience to the test,” said Tiziana Cafini, who operates a tobacco shop near the Pantheon and says she has taken to walking to work rather than riding a bus into the city center because it gets stuck in traffic. “And it’s not just in the center. There are an infinite number of construction sites all around Rome.”

Though she knows the discomfort will be worth it in the end, the end is still pretty far off. In addition to the Jubilee construction, there’s a longer-term, separate project to extend Rome’s Metro C subway line into Rome’s historic center which has encountered years of delays thanks to archaeological excavations of ancient Roman ruins that must be completed first.

For the next four years at least, central Piazza Venezia and its Imperial Forum-flanked boulevard to the Colosseum are scheduled to be congested and blighted by giant, 14-meter (yard) high green silos that are needed for the subway drilling operation.

“We’re upset, but we’re Romans, we’ll make do,” Cafini said.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said recently he was satisfied with the pace of the Jubilee works so far, noting that they got off to a months-delayed start due to the 2022 collapse of Premier Mario Dragi’s government.

But Gualtieri promised they would be completed on time. And in a nod to Romans and tourists who have suffered from the traffic chaos and acute shortage of taxis already, he promised that an extra 1,000 taxi licenses had been approved and would be in use by December.

Yet as of late last month, only two of the 231 city projects had been completed; 57 were under way and another 44 were expected to be started by the end of May, Gualtieri told reporters. Another 18 are up for bids, seven have been assigned, 90 are planned. Thirteen have been canceled.

“We have recovered a lot from the initial delay,” Gualtieri told the foreign press association, adding that he expected the “essential” projects to be completed on time. Other projects were always planned to take longer than the Jubilee but were lumped into the overall project to take advantage of the accelerated timeframe.

The most significant project, and one that has caused the greatest traffic disruption to date, is a new Vatican-area piazza and pedestrian zone connecting Castel St. Angelo with the Via della Conciliazione boulevard that leads to St. Peter’s Square.

Previously, a major thoroughfare divided the two landmarks, causing an unsightly and pedestrian-unfriendly barrier.

The new works call for a tunnel to divert the oncoming traffic underneath the new pedestrian piazza. But that project required re-routing and replacing a huge underground sewage system first, which has only recently been completed. Now crews are working through the night to try to complete the tunnel in time.
