Jeff Beck, Paul Rodgers and Ann Wilson Kick Off ‘Stars Align’ Tour: Set Lists and Videos

The Stars Align tour  featuring Jeff Beck , Paul Rodgers and Ann Wilson  launched with nearly three hours of music at the USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley, Utah, Wednesday night.

You can see set lists and videos from the show below.

Beck's headlining slot focused largely on covers, with 11 of the 18 songs performed originally recorded by someone else. But it also showed off the musical versatility of the guitarist and his band, tackling tunes by the Beatles ("A Day in the Life"), the Jimi Hendrix Experience ("Little Wing"), Stevie Wonder ("Superstition"), the Mahavishnu Orchestra ("You Know You Know") and the Chieftains ("Mná na h-Éireann"), as well as blues greats Otis Rush, Lonnie Mack and Willie Dixon.

During "Big Block," he stopped playing due to an injury to a finger on his left hand. The drummer and bassist kept the groove going while Beck applied something to stem the bleeding given to him by a member of the audience. Once it was fixed, he resumed his solo.

Rodgers' 12-song set drew almost evenly from the two bands that have defined his career: seven from Free and five from Bad Company . After leaving the stage following "Rock and Roll Fantasy," he returned to encore with Free's biggest hit, "All Right Now."

Wilson opened the evening with 10 songs , but only one came from the  Heart  catalog, "Barracuda"; another original, "Fool No More," appeared on her 2015 The Ann Wilson Thing! - #1 EP . The others were covers, with three coming from her upcoming Immortal album (" I Am the Highway ," "You Don't Own Me" and "Life in the Fast Lane"). She opened and closed with the same two songs that began and ended the Who 's Quadrophenia , "The Real Me" and "Love, Reign O'er Me."

The Stars Align tour continues tonight at the Five Point Amphitheatre in Los Angeles and runs through Aug. 26 at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa. You can see all the dates here .

Jeff Beck is a Shooting Star in Stars Align Tour

The Stars Align Tour had all the trappings of a nostalgia show with one artist each from the 60s, the 70s and 80s. Two of those artists lived up to that nostalgic expectation. One of them had other plans.

Jeff Beck and Telecaster

I had lower expectation for Paul Rodgers, the powerful singer for Free and most notably, Bad Company. They weren’t bands I ever followed, but you couldn’t miss them on the radio in those days. They always hit me as derivative, workman-like groups, a combination of Rolling Stones rowdiness and Led Zeppelin metal. But as Rodgers unfolded their catalog, I was struck by how many of the songs were hits. They had five Top 10 albums between 1974 and 1979 and 6 Top Forty Hits. They even had radio hits like the song, “Bad Company” that didn’t chart. Paul Rodgers trotted them all out except for “Bad Company” and the audience, mostly 50, 60 and 70 somethings sporting their best 1970s festival attire, were taken back to their glory days on the wings of Paul Rodgers’ amazingly potent tenor which hasn’t lost a single note. You’re not supposed to sound that good at 68. Rodgers was playful, fronting his quartet, Free Spirit (actually Deborah Bonham ’s backing band), twirling the mike stand ironically and coaxing the audience into sing-alongs. There was no new music here, but all the hits including “Fire and Water,” “Wishing Well” and “All Right Now” from Free and “Can’t Get Enough”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy” from Bad Company.

Wilson and Rodgers were both trafficking in Nostalgia with a capitol N. Not Jeff Beck, the guitar icon who started out as a member of The Yardbirds before going solo with The Jeff Beck Group . That band included future superstar Rod Stewart on vocals and future Rolling Stones member Ron Wood , on bass. Beck has explored many paths in the intervening years including nostalgic 50s rock, fusion with keyboardist Jan Hammer , power trios with Tim Bogart and Carmine Appice from Vanilla Fudge and edgy electronica. His most recent studio album, Loud Hailer , is a mix of electronica angst, political songs and lacerating guitar solos.

Now at a spry 74, stalking the stage as if he was 24, Beck essayed music from across his catalog including a lot of covers that don’t sound like covers, but like songs Beck has made his own.

He had a killer group with drummer Vinnie Colaiuta ( Frank Zappa , Sting , Herbie Hancock ), bassist Rhonda Smith ( Prince , Chaka Khan , Beyoncé , George Clinton ) and cellist Vanessa Freebairn-Smith . Jimmy Hall , formerly of the southern rock group Wet Willie , handled the vocals.

Beck took the stage in a white sleeveless shirt topped by a black embroidered vest, aviator shades and his white Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster with the reverse headstock. Opening with his EDM influenced “Pull It” from his most recent studio album, Loud Hailer he musically announced that despite the old tunes and covers, this would not be a nostalgia set.

Becks’ sets these days are homages to his influences. He expressed his love of fusion with a cover of Billy Cobham ’s “Stratus” and The Mahavishnu Orchestra ’s “You Know, You Know” a slow meditative stop and go vamp that Beck fractured with crosscut bursts.

Paul Rodgers

Beck is an unpredictable player. Picking with fingers instead of a plectrum, his solos are marked by squeaks and squawks, frenetic hammer-ons in the upper register and notes that sustain into infinity. Even in his most tender moments, covering Benjamin Britten via Jeff Buckley ’s “Corpus Christi Carol,” or Stevie Wonder ’s “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers” he’ll take it into unusual turns

Most of Becks set is instrumental but there were several vocal turns by Jimmy Hall, an overbearing singer with a lot of range, but not a lot of touch. He mangled “Morning Dew” which Rod Stewart originally sang so poignantly with Beck on Truth , and he tormented Hendrix’s “Little Wing.” Only on the encore of “Going Down” did he seem the right singer for the job. If Beck had only gotten Paul Rodgers to sing these songs, but I would’ve been happy with Rosie Bones .

But none of that mattered, because while Hall was singing, Beck was destroying it on guitar. The BB&T Pavilion was sweltering in the summer heat, but for about 90 minutes I was not conscious of that at all during Jeff Beck’s set.

Stars Align Tour, Tampa – Review

Rock At Night wrote a review of the show in Tampa, FL on August 26, 2018. Read the review here .

When I heard that Jeff Beck, Paul Rodgers, and Ann Wilson were appearing together in the Stars Align tour, I was thanking the stars and planets that this superstar event was happening—and coming to Tampa, Florida.   Jeff Beck is the supreme gold standard when any musician discusses the best of the best guitarists—eight Grammy awards and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—twice!  And without a doubt, Paul Rodgers is the #1 male vocalist on the planet today!  I have been following him since his Bad Company and The Firm days (OK…I am too young for Free, but everybody knows “All Right Now”).  Ann Wilson is the #1 female vocalist today, a pioneering female rocker with Heart, and now a very successful solo career.  This was my 70s-self dream ticket!

jeff beck stars align tour

So, after months and months of counting the days, the Sunday evening had arrived—and dark clouds were hovering above the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre.  I feared a thunder and lightning storm, which is often too common in the summer, which could delay the concert. The Tampa concert was the last of the tour—and anything could happen.  Impromptu walk-ons or perhaps duets?  The excitement was building as I peered around the stadium which looked like I time-traveled back to the 70s, gazing upon many long-haired men, beards, flip flops, scruffy t-shirts, and denim short-shorts.

jeff beck stars align tour

At approximately 6:35 p.m., Deborah Bonham, sister to the late John Bonham, walked out on stage wearing a flowing blue and white crochet vest and scarf, shaking her blond locks, and grabbing the microphone. She was accompanied by Ian Hatton on guitar.  I really enjoyed her bluesy voice, which went from smooth and silky to a powerful and raspy nuance. I thought, “Wow! The Bonham family—John, Jason, Deborah–has a lot of great musicians!” Notable songs were “Fly” from her album Spirit and “No Angel” from The Old Hyde .

jeff beck stars align tour

The weather was starting to rain at this point and I feared there would be a delay in the concert schedule, but fortunately it did not stop the Stars Align Tour.  Ann Wilson came on stage looking stunning in a satin pink tunic over a black slip skirt. Her voice is just as perfect as it ever was—and then some!  The power, emotion, and tone never ceased to amaze me as she belted out Heart’s “Barracuda” but also paid homage to many greats we lost in recent years like Aretha Franklin, Glenn Frey and Amy Winehouse.  She played some of her favorite covers like “You Don’t Own Me”, which is featured on her upcoming album Immortal ,  to be released on September 14 th . Wilson noted that she is now a Floridian, having moved to the Jacksonville area, and was glad everybody made it out to the concert. She ended with a bang singing The Who classic “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, which is the perfect song for this primary election week!

Ah! Finally, Jeff Beck walked out on the stage with his Olympic white Fender Stratocaster which features a reverse headstock.  He was wearing black pants, a black vest with a rattlesnake emblem, and a white sleeveless shirt which showed off his well-toned arms. A rhinestone cuff on his right-hand wrist, which glittered as he stroked the metal guitar strings. His dark brown hair was coiffed in his signature shaggy cut and his look was topped off with silver-rimmed black shades.

Jeff Beck and Rhonda Smith

Beck started the set off with “Pull It” and followed with “Stratus”.  Another stand-out was the 50s-style Lonnie Mack cover “Lonnie on the Move”.  As I was watching the concert, I immediately noticed the high quality and tightness of Jeff Beck’s supporting band—they are all the cream of the crop musicians in the business.  I absolutely adored watching Rhonda Smith on the bass, who was constantly smiling and looking over at Beck.  Master drummer Vinnie Colaiuta played his heart out and cellist Vanessa Frebairn-Smith mesmerized with her versatility between classical-based music (“Mná na h-Éireann”) and rock music. Beck walked around the stage, looking at Colaiuta, and trading glances with Smith, as if he was unaware an audience was behind him.  Watching him interact with the musicians made me think of jazz maestro John McLaughlin and his band.  In fact, Beck played “You Know You Know” by Mahavishnu Orchestra during the evening, which was a pleasure to hear.

jeff beck stars align tour

I sat there in my seat, spellbound, and was totally absorbed in the music. Whenever I hear Jeff Beck, tears come to my eyes—it is something I cannot explain.  Listening to “Little Wing” and “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” just brings tears to my eyes.  I looked around and during the “lovers” song people were snuggling and the guy in front of me was giving his wife a head massage. There’s something about Beck’s music that makes people feel romantic!

I am always amazed to see Beck play the guitar with his bare fingers, nimbly caressing the strings, and creating that signature unearthly tone his is famous for.  Honestly, the man is from another planet!

jeff beck stars align tour

Some of my personal favorite moments were when Jimmy Hall sang on “Just for Fun” and “Little Wing.”  Beck’s renditions of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and The Beatles’ “Day in the Life” were sheer utter joy. Simply moving and brilliant.

And the evening would have been satisfying if it ended here, but no, it was utterly over the top when Paul Rodgers and his band Free Spirt, appeared and played a lot of songs by Free and Bad Company.  Paul came out on stage wearing a white t-shirt, black pants, and adorned with silver bracelets and beaded chains. The full moon was shining on Paul Rodgers as he played “Can’t Get Enough” and “Feel Like Makin’ Love” to an audience that was cheering and arm-raising. He introduced my favorite song “Ready For Love” saying, “Here is a Mick’s song. He’s doing O.K.”  I noticed couples slow-dancing, gazing into each other’s eyes, and people mouthing the lyrics. Again, romance was in the air!

Another highlight was Free’s funky blues song “Mr. Big” and Bad Company’s “Shooting Star.” Rodger’s voice is absolutely stellar and perfect, unlike any other live performer, and especially shone on “Woman.” His voice is otherworldly and without all the bells and whistles pop artists today feel compelled to use. Pure natural talent!

jeff beck stars align tour

Overall, the evening was absolutely brilliant as the stars truly aligned and the moon shone full.  Mercury retrograde is long gone and only positive vibrations were in full force this Sunday evening. I wonder if the stars will align again in the future? It was truly a memorable evening!

‘Stars Align Tour’ kicks off in stellar fashion at USANA Amphitheatre

Beck is revered as an all-time guitar hero and after witnessing Wednesday’s performance it’s easy to see why. On stage, Beck may be a man of few words, rarely talking to the crowd, but he expresses himself with thousands of notes — and it’s a compelling conversation.

It’s no easy feat to carry long-term fascination with lots of fully instrumental material, which comprised about half his set, but Beck had no problem doing so. The first four songs — “Pull It,” “Stratus,” “Nadia” and “You Know You Know” — were all instrumentals. Part-time singer Jimmy Hall finally made an appearance next on “Morning Dew.” Fans were in such a reverie at that point that it was almost jolting to have someone actually singing.

In addition to Hall’s part-time presence, Beck was backed by a stellar trio of musicians. Rhonda Smith was flat-out amazing on bass. She mostly stayed toward the back, but had a showcase solo out front during “You Know You Know” that was incredible. Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and cellist Vanessa Freebairn-Smith were also excellent in their own rights.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

jeff beck stars align tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.
