Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo (2024)

This is your ultimate, up-to-date guide on island hopping in Kota Kinabalu, including how to arrange a tour or go independently, expected prices, best islands to visit, what to bring with you, and much more.

As soon as you arrive in Kota Kinabalu , you’re aware of the South China Sea, stretching hundreds of miles into the deep blue distance. It’s the canvas for a thousand KK views but you’ll also notice something else glistening in the foreground, a cluster of small islands almost within touching distance of the city.

These five islands (Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik, Sapi, and Sulug) form the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, a tropical KK island hopping paradise, where you can swim, snorkel, sunbathe, and even parasail or banana boat around, or just relax surrounded by nature.

If you’re planning a Borneo island hopping adventure, the Kota Kinabalu islands are an easily accessible option. Indeed it’s perhaps the most popular of Kota Kinabalu day trips and a must if visiting Kota Kinabalu with kids . However, as we discuss later, it’s perhaps not the best place to go island hopping in Sabah.

Island hopping Kota Kinabalu map

The below map shows the Kota Kinabalu islands that make up Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.

Note that only the Kota Kinabalu islands of Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik, and Sapi are accessible to tourists.

Sulug has no amenities and tourists are not permitted to visit without permission from Sabah Parks.

The main hub to head for to start your adventures island hopping is Jesselton Point Quay. From here you can choose from a wide range of tour operators, all offering similar tours at similar prices. If you want to travel independently, they can set you up on a private boat, but bear in mind you’ll not get the islands to yourself in any case.

What is included on a Kota Kinabalu island hopping package?

The standard package will include return boat transfers to one or more of the four islands which make up the national park. When we booked, we were offered a choice of one or more islands, but were guided towards choosing two or three, typically Sapi and Manukan, plus one other.

island trip kota kinabalu

On top of the standard package, you can choose from several additional paid activities including:

  • parasailing
  • snorkelling
  • banana-boat

Please note that the zipline between  Gaya  and  Sapi  islands has been closed since the pandemic, with no sign of it reopening anytime soon.

These Kota Kinabalu island hopping activities can be booked onshore before you depart but we also found the tour guide was happy/eager to take cash payment during the tour, usually for a discount. Keep in mind availability is limited so during busier times, book everything you want to do in advance.

Also, try to bring your own snorkels if you can, the quality of the ones we rented were so poor they were unusable, and once you’re out on the islands, you can’t do much about it. We ended up holding our breath to look under the water through the googles.

What is the Kota Kinabalu island hopping itinerary

You can choose what time you want to leave but bear in mind this is Malaysia and, during busy times, the departure area has the feeling of an international airport terminal. Groups sit and wait on wooden benches until they are called; it can feel disorganised but someone was always there to help.

We booked for 9am and got on the boat about 9:30am. It might be better to book for an earlier departure if you are keen to get there before the main crowds (we wish we’d done this), but remember you might need to pay your balance and get kitted out in lifejackets first, so don’t leave it too late to arrive.

It’s about a 15 minute speedboat ride out to the first island (Manukan in our case) and this is a really fun way to start, especially after the crowds at the dock. It’s from here you’ll get the first sense of the beauty of the islands as they grow larger on horizon. It can feel like the start of a race though, as speedboats zoom off in directions. Try to get a seat at the front for a bump and a thrill!

Once on the island, you’ll pay a national park fee and start your first activity, usually snorkelling but you may also be heading off for another activity. Alternatively, try to find a spare patch of sand and relax. Your tour guide should keep you informed as to what you’re doing and when; as earlier, it might seem organised chaos but it tended to work out in the end. You may be given their WhatsApp number which is handy to find out where they are or where you need to be.

After a couple of hours, you’ll be ushered onto another boat and taken to your next island, from where the same process will repeat itself. Note that lunch isn’t provided so either bring something from the mainland (there is a Subway and supermarket opposite Jesselton Quay, as well as lots of little food stalls to grab a takeaway). There are some restaurants on the islands but these tend to be overpriced and variable quality.

In theory, you can specify a departure time up until 5pm but, in reality, you just seemed to be herded onto any available boat. Just try not to be the last ones on the dock, as beautiful as the islands are, you don’t want to be left stranded.

Is Kota Kinabalu island hopping worthwhile?

The answer to this depends slightly on the time of year you visit, the weather, and how big the crowds are. We were there in July and it was peak season and extremely busy. As we approached Manukan island, we soon realised the beach was 70% full (it was 10am) and the dock was overcrowded with other visitors waiting for an onward connection.

The snorkelling around Manukan was terrible although admittedly there had been torrential downpours the day before which would have affected both the visibility and amount of rubbish which was being washed up. We lasted about two minutes before giving up and retreating to the beach, finally finding a small patch of sand to call our own, surrounded by other tourists.

The other activities were a mixed success as well. The boys tried an expensive 3 minutes of parasailing but didn’t really enjoy it, the operator insisted on dropping them into the water every few seconds and the screams we heard weren’t of joy. It was advertised as a 45 minute experience but we soon realised this included boat time and all the other tourists on the boast taking their go; the actual ride felt very short.

We also did a banana boat ride but (and this was our fault), we told the driver we didn’t want to be thrown off, but he took this to extremes and pulled us along at walking pace for about five minutes! In the mean time, several passengers on the boat got seasick and we had to cut the ride short and head home. In hindsight, we should’ve asked for a speedier ride.

island trip kota kinabalu

The previous day’s storm added to the problems because so many people had had tours cancelled and were switched to our day, so it was probably even busier than normal. But, you do need to factor the crowds in, it really didn’t feel like a unique nature experience. At least not until the last island, by which time most tourists had left and we got to do some better snorkelling off Sapi Island.

If your visit coincides with a quieter time, when the weather is (and has been) good, it’s probably a better experience. We still had a fun day but with the combination of crowds, price, poor visibility, littered water, and occasional rain, Kota Kinabalu island hopping wasn’t really a highlight of our 10 weeks backpacking Southeast Asia with kids .

On top of this, some activities (e.g. the zipline between islands) were still closed post-COVID; it was unclear when or if they’d reopen, but keep an eye out if they do as we’ve heard it’s super fun!

How long is a Kota Kinabalu island hopping tour?

The tour lasts a whole day but you can choose your start and end time, within reason.

You need to arrive 30 minutes before the start time to get kitted out and pay any remaining balance. As we’ve mentioned, the timings of departure, transit, and return aren’t set in stone but it’s still best to book the times you think you’ll need.

How much does it cost to go island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

The ferry (speedboat) prices are fixed at:

  • 1 island: adult RM35 child RM30
  • 2 islands: adult RM45 child RM40
  • 3 islands: adult RM55 child RM50
  • 4 islands: adult RM65 child RM60

Then the National Park fee for Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is paid on arrival to your first island (card only). This is RM25 per adult per day, RM20 per child (17 and under) per day ( click here for up-to-date prices).

We also paid RM10 each for the snorkels which was a waste of money. Try to bring your own or at least check the ones you rent before moving on. If you’re snorkelling anywhere else on your trip, and have space, it’ll work out cheaper to buy a brand new pair.

All in all, our Kota Kinabalu island hopping day cost RM560 (approximately £95) for our family of four. This included, ferry, national park fees, snorkel hire, parasailing and banana boat ride.

Considering our daily spend during our 10 weeks backpacking Southeast Asia averaged at £110 per day (this included everything from food, accommodation, activities, travel), the island hopping Kota Kinabalu day was pretty pricey. Although this is inline with other tour excursions in Borneo, such as the Kinabatangan River (which was incredible).

What’s the best way to book island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

Head down to  Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal   to book in person. It’s a good idea to do this the the day before you want to visit the islands (before 5pm) to get sorted. Although if rain is forecast, you may want to leave it until the morning of to see if the forecast changes (get down to Jesselton Point between 8am and 9am).

Alternatively, you can prebook online via Klook :

There are four islands to visit and it’s a fixed price to visit 1, 2, 3 or 4 islands in one day (island hopping Kota Kinabalu ferry prices are detailed further up in this article). You can then add on activities at an extra cost (which can be negotiated).

island trip kota kinabalu

You can also book online, we saw some good offers there but the prices are very similar with the added slight complication of printing out confirmations, trying to make international credit cards work, and never been 100% sure the company still exists; it’s probably easier to book in person. Most hotels can book for you as well which is a good middle ground, you will pay a small commission though of course.

Do remember that whoever or however you book, you’re all heading to the same islands and once there, you’ll have the same experience, regardless of how you booked. Keep this in mind if tempted to book a fully private tour; you’ll have more control over timings but it won’t be any more private once you hit dry land.

Can you buy food and drinks on the island hopping trip?

There are restaurants on the islands. The food looked to be quite standard for KK if a little more expensive. They were never very busy, mainly because most other tourists took their own food and ate a picnic on the beach. That’s what we did and would recommend it.

There are also a couple of small shops (i.e. at Manukan Island) where you can buy ice-creams, drinks, and small snacks.

What should you take island hopping in Kota Kinabalu?

As well as some patience, try to take:

  • snorkels if you own them
  • change of clothes for the trip back
  • card for National Park fee payment
  • cash if you want to book activities during your KK island hopping adventure

Can you stay on the islands?

There are a few pricey hotels and lodges dotted around the various islands. This is a great option if you can afford it as you’ll get to experience the islands for a few hours without the crowds. Bliss.

These include:

  • Sutera Sanctuary Lodges At Manukan Island
  • Gayana Marine Resort
  • Gaya Island Resort

Final thoughts on Kota Kinabalu island hopping

We had a mixed time island hopping at Kota Kinabalu, partly due to the bad weather from the previous day, and partly due to the sheer number of people sharing the experience. But we knew this in advance, it was Sabah in July and KK island hopping is the one thing everyone seems to tick off when visiting this region.

The tours are well organised if a little hectic; it always feels like it’s about to fall apart but then, out of nowhere, our guide would appear, frantically waving us onto the boat. The paid extras didn’t work for us and felt like a waste of time and money, although we were to blame for the sedate banana boat ride.

In spite of that, there were some magical moments; the speed boat rides were fun, the snorkelling on Sapi was pretty, and we loved being out on the islands when the crowds parted for a moment. At the end of the day, Kota Kinabalu island hopping is a popular activity in a popular region so, if you know what to expect and embrace the crowds, you can get a lot out of your trip. Plus, when you’re back in KK sipping a drink on the waterfront, you can stare out into the distance and say, “we were there”.

5 Beautiful Islands to go Beach Hopping in Kota Kinabalu

island trip kota kinabalu

Welcome to summer! Just so you know, when you are in Malaysia, summer is all year round, and it’s such great news for sun-lovers. While I, personally, prefer cold to hot, I enjoy lying on the beach, enjoying some sun (under an umbrella with a breeze), listening to the sound of the waves, and doing… nothing. One of my favorite destinations to do that is Cancun, Mexico (I recommend doing that in December, though :P). Since the weather in December is really cool and the resorts along the coast are just great.

Of course, I also like going for some exciting sports like scuba diving, snorkeling, or surfing sometimes. In Southeast Asia, there are lots of beachy destinations and tropical places to go to – like Kota Kinabalu, there are a number of islands around the city that you could explore . Sabbah has been a popular vacation “hotspot”, and I once spent a few days there to visit Mount Kinabalu , and then enjoy some beach time.

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

island trip kota kinabalu

Sabah, a state of Malaysia, is located in the northern portion of Borneo. The state is known for its pristine beaches, tropical rainforest, and abundant animal and plant species. Kota Kinabalu, is the state capital of Sabah.

I believe that most tourists come to Sabah for the tropical vibe, the city also offers a vibrant food scene, luxurious resorts, and something more. The city has a population of over 500,000 and it serves as a transportation hub of the region. Its international airport is only a 15-20 minutes drive away from the city center – this is where you can restock and recharge when you are going on a long journey.

If you really want to do some sightseeing, Kota Kinabalu also has some religious monuments, mosques, and temples that you can visit: like Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu , Pu Tuo Si Temple, and Sabah State Mosque.

Partially surrounded by a lagoon, this grand mosque with a blue & gold dome offers tours.

If you are staying in the city of Kota Kinabalu, the easiest way to go to the beaches is going island hopping the following islands. The first three islands are only 15-20 minutes away from the pier and they are also quite close to each other, it’s relatively easy to just spend half a day on these islands when you can still manage to spend some time in the city to sample from street food and have a night out.

Check out my day trip below and see how it fits you!

Kota Kinabalu Island Hopping

The city center of Kota Kinabalu does not directly connect to nice exotic beaches. Travelers may book a room in the resorts away from the main streets, or hop on the boat to the outlying islands. Sapi and Manukan islands are basically the most assessable with their close proximity to the city center. Ferries that travel to these islands depart from the Kota Kinabalu Ferry Terminal – “Jesselton” . The ferry terminal is at the north end of the downtown area; if the hotel you stay in is not closed by, you may need to grab a taxi to get there (Some may have shuttle services).

There were a bunch of ticket booths once we got out of the taxi and entered the hall. A great number of companies operate there but, technically, they were selling very similar “island-hopping” packages for the nearby islands including Sapi and Manukan islands. Try to bargain and they may lower the price a little bit. Generally speaking, Sapi is the hub connecting all islands and Manukan is a nearby island that is more secluded and quiet. There were a few resorts built on the island, too.

island trip kota kinabalu

The boats don’t have an exact time schedule because they leave on a “once the boat is full” basis. If you are traveling on a slow day, in a small group, or even solo, it would be better to follow a big group so you don’t have to wait for your boat to be filled up. (Yes, it’s only a 15-minute ride and the boat leaves when they are full, at this point, no need to stay away from the crowd.)

The boat trip is on average RM30 (US$7) with an additional RM10 for an extra island you choose to visit. Island hopping usually covers Sapi Island, Manukan Island, and Mamutik Island. Gaya Island , is a bigger island in the group but they are private beaches owned by the resorts.

You will have to select which island to go to (they will give you a ticket to hop on the boats) and feel free to check out a few counters to make a decision that you are comfortable with. You may try to talk down the prices, but to be honest, you would probably get a dollar or so reduced at most, and don’t ruin the fun by getting yourself into a bargaining war.

The boat operators will give you a ticket after you paid, keep the ticket safe and dry as you will need them for the whole day; the operator will usually set a time for you to return to the boat and go to the next island, or return to the city. You are free to spend your time on the island to join your watersports, eat, or sunbathe; but don’t lose track of time or they will leave the island without you.

The last boat usually leaves the island and returns to the city by 4 pm. Don’t lose your ticket as you will also need them to get on board; but anyway, it’s just a matter of re-purchasing a ticket if you lose your ticket.

island trip kota kinabalu

So, what to bring? The boat operators may have snorkeling equipment for rental; lounge chairs and beach umbrellas are also available for rental on the beach. You don’t need to prepare anything for the watersport activities, the operators will have them available for you.

Bring basic beach-going items: flip-flops, sunscreen lotion, mosquito repellent, sunglasses, a cap, your swimwear, towel, and a mat to sit on. For ladies, bring a batik to cover up and you can still take beautiful photos on the beach with them.

To make your trip more fun, bring from packed launch (sandwiches, fruits, and drinks so you don’t have to line up or wait outside the food stalls on the island. Enjoy your lunch and have a healthy snack on the beach! Besides, the food stalls on the island are generally overpriced.

sabbah

Sapi Island

For a one-day experience, it is most common to choose 2-3 islands; arriving at Sapi Island first – joining some beach activities and then hop to another island (like Manukan Island, or Mamutik Island) after lunch. We were just going to the beach and we got to Sapi a little bit earlier than the normal crowd; we had some peace and quiet on the beach before the giant group of visitors (and kids) “occupied” the beach.

island trip kota kinabalu

Signed up for one or two activities of your choice: sea walking, banana boat riding, scuba diving, parasailing to jet skiing. If you are not planning to do something so physically demanding or active, you should at least go on doing some snorkeling (the island has spectacular underwater views!). Don’t worry, the boat operators usually have you covered by having the necessary equipment for rental. It’s usually cheaper to rent this equipment from the boat operators than from the stores on the island. You can carry them with you until the end of your island hopping, and the price is about RM15 for a mask, snorkel, and fins.

island trip kota kinabalu

The beach on the south side is the best place to go snorkeling as it has the most corals in the area, and it is farther away from the water-sporting crowd. That means you should be aware of the beach boundaries that indicate the swimming/snorkeling zone – you don’t want to be hit by a banana boat floating in the open water.

Another activity that I would recommend is the zipline, Coral Flyer. It’s a 235-meter-long zip line between Sapi Island and Gaya Island – you should be able to see people gliding above you when the boat approaches the jetty. Tickets are available at the reception desk on the island and the glide starts from Gaya Island back to Sapi over the sea. This is the world’s longest island zipline.

The beach in Sapi is not big, many beach-goers came here for water activities – jet skiing, snorkeling, para-sailing….. etc. I had a dip in the water and saw a lot of fish in the shallow area (Some travelers stuffed bread in the plastic bottles to lure the fish but feeding is actually not permitted.) Really, it was quiet in the morning until lunchtime the entire beach area was full of people!! They were fully clothed and they were talking loud, eating around you, and we would know it was time to leave.

sabbah

Sapi Island pros:

  • Convenience , that explains it all, right? It’s well connected to the city center, and it only takes 15 minutes to get there.
  • This is also where most of the water activities are . If you want to be active, you will need to be here at some point.
  • Don’t forget to experience the thrill of flying across the ocean on the Coral Flyer – the longest island zipline in the world.

Sapi Island cons:

  • It is basically the busiest island among the three because this is where most water activities take place. Families and kids are all here, and it could get quite disturbing if you hear the busy moms yelling at their children afar as the children were running around uncontrollably.
  • It’s also a mood killer when you find quite a lot of family members (like the grandmothers) are sitting not that far from you but they are still fully clothed, watching over their grandchildren. They may stand in the shadow of YOUR umbrella, or they may block your sun if they have an umbrella.
  • Water clarity could be the worst among the other island (again, due to how crowded it is), but still the water clarity is acceptable as I was also to see the bottom of the beach with a lot of small fish.

Manukan Island

After lunch, take a boat and head to Manukan Island . Soak into the clear seawater, sunbathe, and go snorkeling for the rest of the afternoon.

island trip kota kinabalu

The island has changing rooms and shower facilities, and it is also a great location to do some snorkeling or diving. If you want to have a little bit more time there, the island has an Island Resort by Sutera Sanctuary lodges – a world-class resort to get you pampered.

Manukan Island pros:

  • Visitors enjoy a little bit more peace and quiet to stay away from family travelers, and watersport goers.
  • The Island is bigger than Sapi with more pristine beaches to chill and relax.
  • There is a world-class resort and a few restaurants nearby. The island has better dining options.

Manukan Island cons:

  • If you are looking for fun rides, this island has fewer choices and it doesn’t sound so fun where you can’t share the joy with a bigger group, Sapi Island would be more suitable for you.
  • Still, there are so many more “secluded” beaches along the coast of Sabah and if you are looking for total privacy, the beaches on Manukan could be crowded during peak seasons and on the weekends.

island trip kota kinabalu

After a day on the beaches, head back to the city and enjoy a refreshing drink at the KK City Waterfront while looking at the sunset. At night, venture to Gaya Street for some delicious Malaysian cuisine like laksa, char siew, seafood, and bak kut teh.

To go even further, pack your bags and take a hike in Mount Kinabalu . The mountain is the tallest in Southeast Asia. The hike usually requires at least 2 days to complete and hikers can experience diverse flora and fauna. Stay overnight in a lodge at the peak and wake up early for the sunrise, the breathtaking view is something that you will never forget.

sabbah

Mamutik Island

Mamutik Island is the smallest island among the group, and it’s an even better choice for those who enjoy a bit quieter time just sitting on the beach for some sun. The beach offers cooling shades under the Casuarina trees, while you can catch a glimpse of parasailers gliding over the ocean in their multi-colored parachutes.

Take a walk along the jungle trail in the north of the island through the forest ridge for a little bit of adventure, or if you want to grab a bite after a morning on the beach, there is a restaurant located at the jetty on the island. I found this island the best place to take nice photos with the perfectly blue seawater, and a lesser crowd. Just explore the different spots on the island and search for your favorite photo-taking spots.

Mamutik Island pros:

  • The island is quieter, and visitors may have a more “cozy” and “intimate” moment on the beach.
  • It is a great place to take nice photos on the beach without much disturbance.

Mamutik Island cons:

  • It is the smallest island of the group and so there are not many places to explore.

Dinawan Island

This Island is on a different side of the city and it’s 25-minute away from the Marina Sutera Jetty via speedboat. it is a private island owned by a resort, meaning that visitors enjoy a more private time on the beach and nature.

Dinawan Island pros:

  • The island is privately owned which offers a higher level of exclusiveness and privacy.
  • It’s not within the island hopping group of islands, but it’s still easily accessible from the city of Kota Kinabalu.

Dinawan Island cons:

  • You cannot exactly go “island-hopping” if you decide to visit Dinawan Island, it is in another location.

Mantanani Island

island trip kota kinabalu

While Mantanani Island was once named a “diver’s paradise” or a “hidden gem” in Kota Kinabalu, those in the know would say “it’s not true!” – just because now tourists are flooding in after the island is heavily promoted through media and it gets famous.

While those “in the search” are probably moving further away from the city to even more secluded and hidden locations, I think Mantanani Island is now sitting somewhere in the middle for those who want to get away from the crowd, but still don’t have to go “that” far.

island trip kota kinabalu

Don’t worry, while it is not as “hidden” as it used to be, Mantanani Island still has its own tropical beauty. The island takes about 3 hours from the city center to get there, and it is worth the time, as I could clearly see that on the island the water is even more clear, and the beaches are nicer.

sabbah

We joined a local tour that basically took care of the transportation, we visited the island as a group with lunch included. We arrived at the dock after a 2-hour drive from the city center and there was another 2-hour drive to the island. On the boat, we look back and we saw the entire Mount Kinabalu!

island trip kota kinabalu

Once we arrived on the island, we settled down in the small lodge built on the sea. People then scattered to take some pictures of the bluish sea. The water was so clear that we could see the coral and fish in the sea – it was amazing. Then the groups were separated – snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, etc. All necessary equipment like snorkeling masks, swim fins, floaties, and life jackets are available for borrowing on the boat. If you want to take pictures of the underwater world, don’t forget to be a waterproof phone case, or go pro.

You can continue snorkeling or diving after lunch, or if you have had enough in the morning, take the boat and head to an island, just to take pictures and relax on the beach. We were taken to a nearby backpackers lodge and the facilities were for people to take lessons for their driving license. If you enjoy such an environment, it would be nice to stay a couple of days away from the bustle of city life and embrace the ocean.

Sepanggar Island

15 minutes away from Kota Kinabalu exists an island scarcely visited even by the town’s locals. Sepanggar Island is densely forested and fringed by beaches emitting a beautiful tinge of soft pink when the sun is at its fiercest. An astute choice for those wishing to elude the masses who trample upon the islands in its immediate vicinity.

Mengalum Island

A remote isle that can be effortlessly traversed on foot, Mengalum Island lies around an hour by boat from Kota Kinabalu. Gentle cerulean waters surrounding this dream-like island are incredibly shallow that holidaymakers could snorkel a fair distance away from the beach should they wish to. Numerous chalets carpeting the island are at best adequate. But one doesn’t arrive here in search of manmade luxuries; it is the emancipated feeling of being a world away that one seeks.

Mantanani Islands

An archipelago comprising a trio of islands, the Mantanani is a diving haven boasting its own resident dugong population. It isn’t only the underwater creatures that mesmerise visitors, endangered avian creatures too have established a refuge for themselves on land thanks to a dearth of terrestrial predators. An hour by speedboat from Kota Belud, itself another hour from Kota Kinabalu, the larger Mantanani Island is home to several resorts. The largest of which is Sutera at Mantanani Island Resort & Spa.

Tiga Island

Immortalised by Survivor, the enduring reality TV series, for its sea snake infestation, Tiga Island is the raison d’etre of the eponymous national park garrisoned to protect its threatened fauna and unique geographical features, including a couple of active mud volcanoes. In geological terms, the island is fairly young, rising out from the sea in 1897 following a volcanic eruption. Separated from the vast mangrove expanse of the Klias Peninsula, Tiga Island offers volcanic mud baths, houses a resort and if you like it spartan, there is a camping ground for you to set up a tent. 2 hours from Kota Kinabalu, a boat transfer to the island takes place in Kuala Penyu.

Sabah in Malaysian Borneo is a famous place for wildlife lovers. Here you can easily spot orangutans, monkeys or even elephants.

Most of the online flight booking deals, which you can find through search engine sites like Traveloka Malaysia , are likely to offer you a flight with a stopover in Kota Kinabalu. The city doesn’t have much to offer in terms of sights. Therefore, instead of getting bored waiting for the outbound flight, use it as your gateway to some of the best Kota Kinabalu island hopping in the region.

Tell me, what do you think of when you imagine the perfect island holiday? Turquoise see-through water, diversity of marine life and snorkeling possibilities? Lush vegetation and tasty food? If these things are on your list, you will definitely enjoy the island hopping near Kota Kinabalu. Some of the best beaches in Malaysia are situated here.

Where to get on the boat?

All boat departures for the nearby islands take place at Jesselton point. Once you get into a Ticketing hall,  you will be bombarded by tens of tour operators wanting to sell you the rides in their boat. It doesn’t matter which one you choose since prices are all the same. You will pay 30MYR for a return ticket to any island of your choice. If you wish to visit more islands in one day, you have to pay 10MYR extra for each additional island hop.

Sabah Island Hopping Jesselton Point

Take note that you’ll need to have another 10 MYR on you for the preservation fee you pay on arrival at the island. You only pay it once for all islands you visit.

The departures take place since as early as 8 am in the morning and take no longer than 15-20 minutes. The way is bumpy as boats are rather small, but the wind that you get in otherwise tropical Malaysian weather is a pleasant bonus.

Kota Kinabalu islands

There are five islands near Kota Kinabalu that you can choose from. They are Manukan, Gaya, Sapi, and small islands of Mamutik and Sulug. I have only visited two of them, but you can easily cover all five if you have the desire.

Manukan island

Manukan island is second biggest and the most popular island near Kota Kinabalu. With its crystal clear water, it was easy to see all the colorful fish without even a mask on. The snorkeling possibilities here are fantastic, especially if you swim further away along the bridge, where tourists do not bathe. From swordfish to stingray, you can widen your marine vocabulary pretty fast.

The island is big, so you can easily spend a whole day here. If you are bored of swimming and bathing in the hot sun, you can go on a hiking trail.

Sabah-Island-Hopping-Manukan-island-baloon

If you are interested in staying on the island overnight, there is a big luxury resort on its territory with beautiful tree houses facing the ocean, which cost starting from $170 per night. There is a possibility to camp, given you have your own tent or a hammock.

General Tips

  • 2-3 hours is usually enough to chill on one island, therefore, you can easily visit 3 islands in one day or even all 5 if you are really eager
  • Be considerate of the time the last boat departs, so that you are not left on the island overnight. Usually, the last boat departs at 4 pm
  • All islands have free public bathrooms and shower and places where you can change
  • Girls, consider bringing something to cover your body once you are done swimming. Malaysia is a Muslim country and many locals come here for a holiday as well, therefore, it is not common to wear bikinis only
  • Bring something to read. Swimming is fun but it might not get you as much time as you think it would
  • Sunscreen is a must. I usually do not have problems getting sunburns, but the sun is way too strong in Sabah
  • You can buy snacks or have a lunch on the islands, there is usually a restaurant and a shop there. But mind that it will be more expensive than bringing your own food

How to get to Kota Kinabalu?

Flying in between major cities in the region is made much cheaper and convenient thanks to the variety of local low-cost airlines. Using the online flight booking service at Traveloka , you can find flights between Singapore or Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu for as little as $30-40. After that, you are a 15-minute taxi ride away from the city to begin your island exploration.

All the island lovers out there, how do you prefer to explore the tropical paradise? Do you take island at a time or wish to see all of them in one trip? Let me know in comments below.

Perfect timing! We might be planning a trip to Malaysia next February and Kota Kinabalu was on my mind as well. This is a very useful post 🙂

All of these islands are so beautiful! This just may be the perfect winter getaway for me 🙂 Great post!

Exactly! I love going to Asia in order to escape cold winters in Europe.

Wow this looks incredible! So exotic and peaceful….and your photos are stunning. Aaaaaand I had no idea that there are lizards out there that can SWIM!!!???? What an adventure! Cheers, Jessica

Oh yes, they swim in all the unexpected places, haha.

love you post! your photos are amazing and the adventures as well, thanks for the guides and tips you shared, the lizard look cool though but creepy. I did enojoyed reading you blog. thank you.

Lexie, thanks for visiting!

island trip kota kinabalu

Lena, I loved reading this! My parents were born in Malaysia, so I travel there pretty often to visit extended family. I feel very embarrassed to admit that I definitely have not explored Malaysia as much as I should have!. I’ve heard Sabah is beautiful, but I never realized how amazing the beaches were! I also am really glad to read your suggestion about covering up when on the beach – not enough people know this. I have on occasion seen the odd tourist who forgets or doesn’t realize that Malaysia is a conservative country. It definitely can make some people uncomfortable when tourists don’t respect that. Thank you for such a great read 🙂

I enjoyed reading your comment so much! As a European, I never really though about covering up, because no one does that here. But in Malaysia, I just felt really uncomfortable because no one really walks in their underwear 😀 So next time I went to the beach, I brought a cover-up for when I am out of the water. I loved your country very much!

island trip kota kinabalu

Oh, awesome post! I love your photos. They look so stunning and inspiring. I always wanna go there, especially Sipadan Islands and Mount KK, but the flight ticket is quite high, even more expensive than the route KL – Bali.

Ha, that’s strange, I flew with Air Asia from Hong Kong and the tickets were quite okay in price, but that’s always subject to change.

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu – Most Fun in Sabah

island trip kota kinabalu

In Kota Kinabalu, island hopping is one of the best and most exciting things to do. There are four islands near Kota Kinabalu that are popular day-trip destinations. These islands lie in a National Marine Park that draws thousands of visitors annually.

Top Kota Kinabalu Islands

  • Palau Gaya – Gaya island is the largest and has the most to offer. It may feel slightly touristy if you visit during the high season. The widest range of activities and hotels will naturally be found here.
  • Palau Manukan – This island has the most beautiful beaches in my opinion. Manukan Island is large enough to offer a few small hiking trails in addition to its beautiful beach.
  • Palau Mamutik – Mamutik is the smallest island of the group. There will be fewer tourists here, so it makes a great place to get away from the crowds. There are good dive spots here as well.
  • Palau Sapi – Sapi island is a great choice for any day of island hopping. Head here for snorkeling and beach vibes.
  • Palau Sulug – Sulug, the most remote of the islands, is a great place to go if you want to enjoy some time to yourself. It’s the furthest south so it may be out of the way if you plan on visiting several islands on the same day. You won’t see much here besides unaltered natural beauty.

Choosing between the hotels in Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu offers great value as far as accommodations go. Numerous 3-4 star hotels are available for low-low prices. We ended up staying at the Oceania Hotel, a big clean property, for around $30 a night. Oceania Hotel was a good fit for us with nice, clean rooms and good service from the front desk and staff. The hotel’s only downside, which is a little far from the city center, was made up for by the complimentary shuttle rides to the city which were provided by the hotel.

If I visit Kota Kinabalu again, I will choose to spend a little more and stay in a place like the Borneo Beach Villas . These gorgeous apartments offer seclusion and relaxation that I want from Sabah. Alternatively, more pocket-friendly options are available to backpackers and those on a budget.

From one island to another – to another

A visit to Kota Kinabalu wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the many islands surrounding the capital of Sabah. If you are a savvy traveler it is possible to plan your own excursions to the islands. To do this you will need to make your way to one of the docks that offer passenger trips. The most popular docks are located around Jesselton Point. From here you can catch ferries and speedboats to numerous nearby destinations. This is also where you Kota Kinabalu island hopping tour will likely start.

If you want the details to be handled by a professional you can consider joining a tour offered by one of the countless travel agencies in the area. The price will vary based on how many islands you want to see in a day and will include all fees and snorkel/life jacket rentals.

Kota Kinabalu to Sapi Island by boat

Our hotel offered a one-day island hopping trip that included snorkeling and other activities at two islands. The cost of the trip was 140 RM per person inclusive of a delicious buffet lunch. We went to sleep early that night to ensure we were well rested for our 8 am departure. The guide that arrived in the morning spoke excellent English as do many people in Sabah. In fact, I have rarely had a problem communicating with people during my travels in Malaysia.

Starting the day with a visit to Sapi Island

Beautiful Sapi Island

Tours to the islands utilize speedboats that make quick trips between the islands. The journey will be fairly choppy so if you are prone to seasickness you may want to prepare some medication or consider a land-based tour.

The first place our group headed to was Sapi Island, a (relatively) small island to the east of the popular Gaya Island.  I was still sunburned from our rafting excursion so I made sure to slather on the sunscreen this time. There will be a lot of days in the sun in the week ahead and I would rather not deal with painful red skin for the rest of the trip.

The water around Sapi was very clear and pretty. The first thing I did after applying sunscreen was to grab a snorkeling mask and head into the water. There was a large amount of fish visible in the water around Sapi Island, although they were a bit skittish. Some of the fish were fairly big and made for a good snorkeling experience. The water was perfectly clear and offered great visibility. It had been around 10 years since I went snorkeling last so I was pretty happy to try it again. If I go again I would be happy to spend the whole day at Sapi Island.

Sapi Island also offers a diverse range of water sports and activities to cater to the needs of tourists. For a fee you can enjoy a banana boat ride, parasailing, flying fish boat, and much more. We chose to try the Jet Ski which cost 170 RM for 30 minutes. The experience was great because we were able to operate the jet ski by ourselves. A lot of places I have visited ask you to sit in the back while the staff gives you a ride on the jet ski. That is probably safer but too boring in my opinion.

On to Manukan Island

Sabah Island Hopping - Manukan Island Tour

After eating a buffet lunch at Sapi Island our group was ready to head to the second island of the day, Manukan Island. Our Kota Kinabalu island hopping tour was nice, but Manukan was the highlight. The ride on the boat to Manukan Island was very fast as the islands aren’t too far apart. In my opinion, the island had less to offer than Sapi but had beautiful emerald green water. If you’re in a rush an hour or two spent snorkeling here should be enough. The island itself is beautiful and, like the other islands in the area is heavily forested. The only problem was with the visibility underwater. The water around the beach was murky and made observing the fish nearly impossible. However, there was a solitary pufferfish that enjoyed following me around. We spent a few minutes swimming around with each other before parting ways. I would be interested in hearing your experiences with Manukan Island. Perhaps I went on a bad day, or maybe a swim farther from shore would lead to a better snorkeling experience?

Concluding the island hopping tour

Island hopping in Sabah

Many people who island-hop around Sabah choose to visit the Gaya Island Resort but I’m glad we visited some of the smaller islands on this trip. Gaya Island may be the biggest, but Sapi Island and Manukan Island won us over with their charm.

In the beginning, I wanted to visit three islands on my Sabah island hopping tour. I thought we should get as much done as possible since the next chance to visit Sabah will likely come far into the future. However, at the end of the day, I was thoroughly satisfied with the two-island experience. If we tried to do more the day would be too rushed and not as enjoyable and relaxing as it was for us. Sometimes going slow and taking in the sights is the best choice.

Due to the high cost of car rental it is not worth renting a car for the first 2 days of this itinerary. Day 1 and day 2 stay close to Kota Kinabalu. Day 3 and day 4 involve traveling a lot further.

Try some Sabah Seafood

things to do in Sabah Kota Kinabalu seafood market

In the evening visit the Sabah Seafood market along the seafront. This market sells fresh seafood dishes and is a great way to experience some of the Sabah seafood. Food is relatively cheap and good in Malaysia. Sabah has a reputation for great seafood. But it is a bit more expensive. Expect to pay around RM20 – RM50 for a seafood dish in Sabah.

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu drone beach

Take an island hopping day trip around the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park . The island hopping trip is fun and visits some very beautiful islands.

The best way to book an island hopping trip in Kota Kinabalu is to go to the jetty between 8:00a.m. and 10:00 a.m. There are ticket counters where you can buy island hopping tickets and rent masks, snorkels and fins. You can choose how many islands to visit in the day.

Gaya island Kota Kinabalu Sabah

We recommend the three Island trip as it allows you to see plenty of beautiful islands at a reasonable pace. Island hopping trips range in price from RM35 (roughly £7 or $10) to RM65 (roughly £13 or $15) depending on the number of islands.

  • 1 island trip costs RM35 AND Child RM30
  • 2 island trip costs Adult RM45 AND Child RM40
  • 3 islands trip costs Adult RM55 AND Child RM50
  • 4 islands trip costs Adult RM65 AND Child RM60

You can rent snorkel and fins for RM10. You also need to pay an island conservation fee (ONE fee per adult of RM20) which is paid when you arrive at the first island. Keep the ticket as this can be presented at each island.

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu island hopping boat

Bring water and sun protection on the island hopping trip. On some of the islands it is possible to buy some simple food. However, there is not a lot of choice so we recommend bringing your own food. Throughout the day you will be directed where to go and told what time to return for your boat.

Day 3 Ziplining and the Kundasang Dairy farm and market

Visit zip borneo.

Zip borneo Sabah itinerary

On day 3 of your Kota Kinabalu itinerary, travel to Kundasang. On the way, consider a visit to the Zip Borneo Adventure Center. Zip Borneo is an outdoor activity center with an obstacle course, climbing wall, high rope course and an epic zipline.

Check into a Kundasang homestay

Kundasang homestay

Travel to Kundasang. This is a beautiful mountain town located near Mount Kinabalu. We recommend checking into a Homestay in the area. The Pogimpaan Homestay is our top pick with breathtaking views of Kinabalu and the surrounding hills. You can get competitive prices for Pogimpaan on Agoda . Check the price of Pogimpaan on booking.com (it’s always worth shopping around).

It is also great value for money. Alternatively check out Zen Garden on Agoda or Zen Garden on booking.com

Visit the Desa Dairy Farm

Desa Dairy farm Kundasang

The journey from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang takes around 2 or 3 hours. Take a visit to the Desa Dairy farm, situated in the hills around 5km north of Kundasang. The Desa Dairy farm boasts amazing views of the mountains AND don’t miss the amazing Desa Dairy ice cream. For a very reasonable price you can buy a pot of soft serve Desa Dairy ice cream. Tickets are only available in advance and must be booked through their official ticket website.

After visiting the Desa dairy farm we recommend paying a visit to the local fruit and veg market located in Kundasang. They sell a range of fresh fruits and vegetables, a great way to experience the beautiful rural mountain culture.

Also, check out the BW Bus Restaurant (located between Kundasang and Ranau). The BW Bus Restaurant offers scenic dining in converted buses. They serve a range of decadent drinks and food. Food and drinks are a little more expensive than the average restaurant, however you are paying for the location and novelty.

Day 4 Hot Springs, canopy walkway and Rafflesia

Visit a rafflesia garden.

things to do in Tioman rafflesia

Travel to Poring (around 20 minutes from Kundasang). On the road that leads to the hot springs there are a couple of Rafflesia gardens. It is worth stopping at one of the Rafflesia Gardens to see if they have any Rafflesia flowers in bloom. If they do have a flower in bloom you can normally see it for around RM20. Rafflesia are genuinely very unique and beautiful and only bloom for around 5 days before dying. They also lay claim to being the largest flowers in the world.

Visit the Poring Hotsprings

Poring hotsprings Sabah Malaysia

After stopping at a Rafflesia Garden, go to the Poring hot spring . This is a very beautiful and natural area and a great place for relaxing. There is a very good range of pools for bathing, swimming and relaxing. The Poring hot springs are open daily from 8am – 3pm. Once you have paid for entry you can stay for the whole day.

Kota Kinabalu itinerary – Where next?

sea turtle marbul snorkeling diving

After visiting Poring you could travel back to Kota Kinabalu. Alternatively from Poring you can travel on to Sandakan to visit the orangutans, sun bears and proboscis monkeys. If you have time, consider taking a Kinabatangan river cruise. If you’re looking for snorkeling, diving and crystal clear waters why not travel on to Semporna and Mabul island? Sabah really does have SO MUCH to offer.

A Guide on Sea Sport Activities Price List

I signed up for Beautiful Twin Islands Hopping, and the tour guide, Yung, was super friendly, caring and patient. He provided clear instructions on the tour and safety briefing. We were provided options for water sports, and our family enjoyed it very much. The lunch was delicious, and Yung took care of our dietary preferences and ordered the lunch accordingly. The tour was arranged to avoid the crowd by boarding from a private jetty. We were grateful for the thoughtful and well planned tour by Yung. I highly recommend engaging Amazing Borneo for any tour package.

Liew urges DBKK to slap maximum RM500 fine on litterbugs

Sabah to hold community-based tourism fair at putrajaya mall, liew not gunning for sabah pkr chief post, backs mustapha for the job.

KOTA KINABALU: Litterbugs should be slapped with the maximum RM500 fine to deter people from throwing away rubbish indiscriminately, says Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

Liew, who is Api Api assemblyman, said that she had proposed to Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) to impose the maximum fine for anyone caught red-handed.

She said this in response to the large amount of rubbish found on the streets at popular hangouts in the city here over the holidays.

Liew said that she fully backed DBKK's enforcement of the Anti-Litter By-Laws 1984 (Amendment 2005) to issue compound notices (of up to RM500) to litterbugs.

"Offenders may be asked to pay a compound fine not exceeding RM500 under Section 9 of the Anti-Litter By-Laws.

"My understanding is that the fine is usually way below RM500 and could be as little as RM30. This will not act as a deterrent," she said.

Liew said offenders can even be arrested and hauled to court; and if found guilty, sentenced to do community service.

She said DBKK could learn from Singapore in handing out hefty penalties for littering under its Environmental Public Health Act (EPHA).

"The fine for the first offence upon conviction has since been doubled from S$1,000 (RM3,500) to S$2,000 (RM7,000).

"For the second conviction, the fine is up to S$4,000 (RM14,000)," Liew said in a statement on Saturday (April 13).

She thanked DBKK for cleaning up the litter and also requested for more rubbish bins in busy public areas.
