The 7 Best Hotels in Barcelona

With its world-class food scene, rambunctious nightlife, sunny weather, and laid-back pace, Barcelona is one of my favorite cities in Europe. It’s also one of the most-visited cities on the continent, bursting at the seams every summer as travelers come to explore, admire its art and architecture ( Gaudi has tons of works here ), and eat all the tapas they can.

I love the energy of the city and never get tired of visiting.

While there are lots of neighborhoods to stay in , almost everything you’ll want to see or do is in just a handful of areas. I’ve been coming to the city since 2006 and have stayed at a ton of accommodations over the years.

To help you wade through the endless accommodation options, here’s my list of the best hotels in Barcelona:

1. Hotel 54

2. Hotel BestPrice Gràcia

3. Hotel Casa Fuster G.L Monumento

The rooms here are huge, airy, and let in a lot of natural light. The beds are large and comfortable and the décor is stylish and regal, with wooden accenting and hardwood floors. The bathrooms are also large and well-lit, with lots of space and great water pressure. Rooms also include a minibar, flatscreen TV, Wi-Fi, desk, coffee maker, and plush bathrobes. There’s a huge included breakfast too.

4. Saint Antoni Market

All the apartments have a kitchen, large bedrooms, a washer and dryer, tables, a couch, and both Wi-Fi and AC. (Since they’re full-service apartments, there’s no breakfast available on-site, though there are plenty of great spots nearby.) The bathrooms are roomy and feature large showers and magnifying mirrors. The staff here are super friendly and full of excellent recommendations to help you explore the neighborhood. I think it’s the best value hotel in the area. Note: During high season, there’s a minimum four-night stay.

The rooms here are simple, elegant, and minimally designed. They’re also well-soundproofed, large with lots of natural light, and even have a small balcony where you can take in the view. There’s a nightly turndown service, rain showers in the bathroom, and complimentary newspapers and bottled water too. The breakfast (not included) has a ton of variety, including lots of fresh fruit. It’s the best non-chain luxury hotel in the area.

6. Hotel Colón

The rooms have a light, airy ambiance and look incredibly sleek and stylish. Overall, it’s a calm, quiet hotel in a quiet part of the neighborhood. There’s also a terrace where you can enjoy the view, and the on-site restaurant serves up delicious Catalan fare (breakfast can be included too).

7. Hotel Praktik Vinoteca

Breakfast, while not included, is delicious (it doesn’t have a lot of variety but what is there is tasty and fresh). There’s also a beautiful courtyard with a lot of trees where you can enjoy one of the hotel’s famous wine tastings. I think this a good upscale hotel with reasonable prices.

Looking for where to stay in Barcelona for your trip? After living in the city for a season, I’m going to break down exactly where you want to stay (and where not to stay.) And there is even a map to help give you a visual of the best Barcelona neighborhoods.

Barcelona is one of my favorite cities in Europe, so much so, that I lived there for several months. It became a second home for me, where weekends were spent exploring the many neighborhoods in the Catalan city. I love the energy of the city, there are incredible restaurants and top-rated coffee shops , and you can’t miss one of these best day trips from Barcelona .

In this guide to the best areas in Barcelona to stay, I’m going to break down exactly where you want to stay on a visit. Especially first-time visitors to Barcelona, you want to book yourself in the best neighborhood possible for exploring. I saw it several times where friends booked in too far from the sights they wanted to visit, resulting in a lot of time trying to get across the city. So I’m going to help you avoid that!

You’ll find as you begin to look at hotels in Barcelona that there are a range of budgets and styles. My recommendation is to first decide which neighborhood you want to be in . Then from there, look at which hotels will suit your budget and style.

If you don’t have time to read through all the details in this guide, I’m going to give you quick recommendations here as I always do on my posts.

• The best two neighborhoods for a central stay in Barcelona are somewhere between El Born and l’Eixample . The goal is to be within walking distance of one of the main metro stops and close to sights. The top hotels I recommend to my friends and family are Hotel Casa Bonay ($$), Praktik Rambla ($), and Cotton House Hotel ($$$).
• The best neighborhood for a local feeling and family travelers is Gràcia. But do know that it comes with a bit more time spent getting around and limited accommodations. The hotel I recommend here is the Radisson Blu 1882 Hotel ($).
• The best neighborhood with a happening scene is the Gothic Quarter. If you’re looking to be in the mix, book here and you’re close to everything. The hotels I recommend here are Hotel Neri ($$$) and Petit Palace Boqueria Garden ($).

The Best Area to Stay in Barcelona (By Neighborhood)

For a first-time visit #1: el born.

I don’t think there is a more quintessential neighborhood in Barcelona than El Born. Referred to as “The Born,” it’s a vibrant part of the city that has incredible medieval architecture, some of my favorite tapas bars, and charming narrow streets. I spent most days in the city coming here to our favorite coffee shops like Nomad Coffee and Cafès El Magnífico . The Born is home to the famous Santa Maria del Mar church, Mercat de Santa Caterina (a market you don’t want to miss), the Picasso Museum , and Palau de la Música Catalana .

There is so much to do when you stay in the heart of Barcelona which is why I always love it as a base for exploring. There are more limited hotels in the actual neighborhood of El Born. Most hotel recommendations for this area are actually in L’Eixample (see the next section.) But there are a few to consider if you want to be right within walking distance of the Born favorites.

• Hotel Ciutat de Barcelona ($$) for a boutique stay
• Chic&Basic Habana Hoose ($) for the best budget stay
• Yurbban Trafalgar Hotel ($$$) for the best luxury stay on the edge of El Born
• The Barcelona EDITION ($$$) for the best design stay in El Born

My Favorite Spots in El Born

El Born is a fun one. You really can’t go wrong with a proper day strolling through the tight streets of this quarter. I always find myself starting with a coffee at Nomad . It’s the top of the neighborhood, and from there, you can work your way down. If there is one meal you can’t miss, it’s at the tapas bar, El Xampanyet . The team here became like a second family. I came in almost 2x a week when living here.

Down the road, some other restaurant favorites were Mosquito for Asian-inspired tapas, Bormuth (a Barcelona classic), and Cal Pep . If you’re looking for one of those fun restaurants, El Flako Breakfast Club serves these ridiculously good, oversized cereal bowls.

While in the Born, my favorite stop is the Picasso Museum , definitely get tickets to come here. Afterward, make your way up to the Mercat de Santa Caterina to peruse the food stalls. Another favorite thing I did in the Born was catch a show at Palau de la Música Catalana — check to see what is happening here during your visit.

I think you’ll find that most of the charm of the Born is simply strolling the streets. Most are pedestrian-only, so you can enjoy this local neighborhood. And don’t forget the churros at Xurreria Laietana — they are heavenly and worth the wait.

For a First-Time Visit #2: L’Eixample

My next recommendation for any trip to Barcelona is to base yourself in L’Eixample. It’s a rather large area of Barcelona when you consider where Eixample is. In this case, I’m looking at the areas of Eixample that touch from Placa de Catalunya with Passeig de Gràcia being the most central road through. There is a lot to do in this part of Barcelona, so if you can put yourself close to the center of this neighborhood, you’ll be within walking distance of a lot.

It’s home to several of Gaudi’s works like Casa Batlló and La Sagrada Familia . You have some of the top restaurants and shopping areas along Passeig de Gràcia like the iconic El Nacional Barcelona and top designer boutiques. The key to staying in L’Eixample is to be close to one of the major metro stations. The grand boulevards are long and while it’s technically all in the same neighborhood, it can mean long stretches of walking.

Because of its central location, you’ll find that the hotels do run more expensive. The high-end hotels of the city are in this part of Barcelona, and for good reason. So I’ve got a few gems that won’t break the bank or compare in costs to the luxury hotels. As well as some of my favorite splurge-worthy hotels in Barcelona.

Best Hotels in L’Eixample

• Hotel Casa Bonay ($$) for best design for dollar hotel
• Hotel Praktik Rambla ($) for a favorite budget hotel
• H10 Metropolitan ($$) for best mid-range boutique hotel
• Cotton House Hotel ($$$) for best design luxury hotel ( my personal favorite )
• Almanac Barcelona ($$$) for the best well-priced luxury hotel
• Mandarin Oriental Barcelona ($$$$) for the best luxury hotel

My Favorite Spots in L’Eixample

L’Eixample covers such a large part of Barcelona. So let’s start with the classics that I always love like a meal at one of the half-dozen restaurants inside El Nacional . This area is also home to much of Gaudi’s work like Casa Batlló , La Sagrada Familia , and Casa Mila . All of which are worth a visit, and very much need a ticket booked ahead.

Other favorite spots that I visited frequently were places like Restaurant Mordisco , a Catalan classic and local favorite. The famous tapas bar, Bar Mut is also technically in L’Eixample, but feels much more like the neighboring area of Gràcia. Compartir is also a favorite for elevated dining (done by the chefs from Disfrutar ).

I spent a lot of time at Hotel Casa Bonay , and though it’s a hotel, there’s a great restaurant and coffee shop. And don’t forget the sleek Cotton House Hotel — a glass of wine in their greenhouse-style room in the back is stunning. And for brunch lovers, hop in line at Granja Petitbo .

For The Action: The Gothic Quarter

If you’re looking to be in the heart of the action, the Gothic Quarter is it. It has some of the highest foot traffic in all of Barcelona due to its several pedestrian-only streets. A lot is happening here, often geared for the tourist as many tours run through to see historic sights.

You have the Catedral de Barcelona , the famous Placa Reial with its restaurant-lined plaza, and Roman remains in the Barcelona City History Museum . The Gothic Quarter is condensed yet has much to do, and you’re centrally located. I’m always hesitant to recommend the Gothic Quarter as some may find it overwhelming, but it is well-located and offers a ton of attractions.

Best Hotels in The Gothic Quarter

• Hotel Neri ($$$) — for best luxury stay
• Hotel Catalonia Catedral ($$) — for best central location
• Petit Palace Boqueria Garden ($) — for the best budget stay

My Favorite Spots in The Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter has this interesting blend of very touristy things and some local gems. There are many historic sights in this quarter, some of which I’d go out of my way to see. The Catedral de Barcelona is always worth it, and do be sure to pass under El Pont Del Bisbe on your way to the bustling Plaça de Sant Jaume . The architecture is fantastic.

Other favorite spots that I always found my way to were Plaça Reial , seriously picturesque. And you can’t go wrong with just strolling through the tight and narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter. Along the way, there are several great spots to get a bite to eat and have coffee.

For caffeine purposes, formerly Satan’s Coffee Corner now Right Side Coffee Bar is the best. Federal Cafè is also good, and you can get a bite to eat here too. For a bite to eat, my local go-to is always Bo de B for local bocadillo-style sandwiches that I’d get on a plane for. Colom is also a classic in the neighborhood too.

And if you’re making your way to Mercado de la Boqueria (technically next neighborhood over), don’t skip the breakfast at El Quim de la Boqueria . The squid with fried eggs is life-changing. And if you can’t get there for breakfast, Cañete , just down the block, is a classic tapas option.

For a Family Trip: Gràcia

The neighborhood of Gràcia — if I could live anywhere in Barcelona, it would be here. The long boulevards and the very family-friendly and local-forward neighborhood are a gem. It’s slow-going, a bit further afield, and offers a taste of local life.

There are two ways to look at Gràcia — it’s more family-friendly and offers local gems, and it’s also further away from the main sights. Neither is a bad thing, especially if you’re close to one of the main metro stops. You’ll find an entire little city right in this pocket of Barcelona with still plenty of things to do like Parc Güell , Casa Vicens , and Mercat de l’Abaceria . Keep in mind that accommodations are more limited here if you do choose to stay.

Best Hotels in Gràcia:

• Casa Bella Gràcia ($$) — for rooms that fit many group sizes
• Be Mate Paseo de Gràcia ($$) — for an apartment rental
• Hotel Ronda Lesseps ($) — for a budget, cute stay
• Radisson Blu 1882 Hotel ($) — for a budget, well-designed stay

My Favorite Spots in Gràcia

While I already mentioned Bar Mut , Gràcia has a few other dining gems. Don’t skip La Brillantina for a hidden gem known for Latin-American food. Omu has your onigiri covered, and La Xula Taperia is a popular tapas choice.

I’m not as familiar with the coffee in this area, but I do have Syra Coffee and Mollo Coffee on my list for next time — both look amazing. Part of the Gràcia charm is the neighborhood itself — so go for a stroll and use Gaudi’s Casa Vicens (worth a tour) as a starting point.

One last thing you can’t miss is Gaudi’s Park Güell . I always go for first light and get the place to myself, tickets are required to get to the top.

For Proximity to The Beaches: Barceloneta

Barceloneta, the neighborhood with a strong Catalan spirit and where I called home for several months. I love this neighborhood, probably not for a first-time visit, but for a more local feel. You’re a short walk to the Barceloneta beach, it’s primarily residential, and there are some excellent local tapas bars.

Barceloneta is the spot to stay if you don’t mind a bit more time getting to the other sights and still being close to the water. You’re never too far from the beach. The hotels here are not plenty but a few that stand out as an option.

• Hotel Arts Barceloneta ($$) — for an elevated stay
• Sofitel Barcelona Skipper ($$) — for a resort stay
• W Barcelona ($$$) — for right on the beach

My Favorite Spots in Barceloneta

Barceloneta was my home when living in Barcelona so I’m going to give you the low-down on this part. There’s not necessarily a ton to do in the neighborhood in terms of sights — I would pass through for a bite and make my way to the beach if that is your thing.

Bar Jai-Ca (tapas) and Montolio Can Maño (seafood) are both worthy of a meal, I’d eat at any one of these two and they’re close together. I’d get on a plane for La Xampanyeria (Can Paixano) and their house cava and lomo con queso sandwiches. The Green Spot is a favorite for vegetarian food, it’s so beautiful and reservation is required. And down at the base of the W Barcelona , is Peix Vala , my go-to for paella in Barcelona.

For a Neighborhood Feel: El Raval

El Raval is a vibrant and diverse neighborhood in the heart of Barcelona, Spain. It’s known for its eclectic atmosphere, a fascinating blend of cultures, from historic narrow streets and traditional markets to contemporary art galleries and trendy boutiques. El Raval is home to the iconic contemporary art museum, MACBA , one of those must-sees in Barcelona.

Additionally, its easy access to the bustling Plaça de Catalunya , La Rambla , and the historic Gothic Quarter makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the city. So it’s worth considering being in this area if you’re looking for some vibrant city life with a neighborhood feel.

My Favorite Spots in El Raval

I didn’t spend as much time here as I did in the other neighborhoods unless I was coming to Flax&Kale for brunch or dining somewhere like Suculent . El Raval is home to the MACBA, Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art , which is worth a visit.

There is a “ Rambla” of El Raval, which allows you to walk down a palm-lined street, and it is very scenic. Along the way, you could pre-book tickets to visit Gaudí’s Palau Güell as well.

For Off-the-Beaten-Path: El Poble Sec

Poble Sec, nestled at the foot of Montjuïc Hill in Barcelona, is a neighborhood brimming with charm and character. Known for its relaxed and authentic ambiance, it offers a respite from the bustling city center while still being accessible to the rest of the city.

I only came over to Poble Sec really to enjoy the culinary scene — some of the best tapas bars, traditional Catalan eateries, and trendy restaurants are over here. The neighborhood is also home to several cultural gems, including the historic El Molino cabaret theater, which has hosted world-famous artists, and the Fundació Joan Miró , dedicated to the renowned Catalan artist Joan Miró.

With its welcoming atmosphere, cultural richness, and proximity to both Montjuïc Park and the city center, Poble Sec is a hidden gem for visitors seeking an authentic Barcelona experience.

My Favorite Spots in El Poble Sec

When I made my way to El Poble Sec, it was almost always for tapas at Quimet & Quimet . It’s such a fun spot you can’t miss in Barcelona. The neighborhood doesn’t have a ton going on so keep this in mind when you make your way.

Afterward, I’d go up to Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya , Catalan Museum of Archaeology , and then the Jardins de Joan Maragall . The views from the very top are pretty spectacular of Barcelona on a clear day. It’s great for getting steps in, as it’s quite the climb.

Other restaurants I love between Poble Sec and Sant Antoni are Bar Ramon for tapas and Món Viêt for Vietnamese.

Where are the best places to stay in Barcelona, Spain ? Each neighborhood offers different things: bountiful bakeries, beguiling bars, or buzzing beaches…or perhaps you want it all? As a 15-year resident, I’ve lived in different Barcelona neighborhoods, so I have a realistic idea of each one. I’ll give you the good, the bad, and the ugly. Below are the most popular and best neighborhoods for first-timers — keeping in mind proximity to tourist attractions, lifestyle, and safety. You don’t have to worry about driving a car because Barcelona is a walkable city, and public transportation is one of the best in Europe. BARCELONA NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDE

Which is the  best neighborhood to stay in Barcelona ? And which hotel? To start, let’s talk about the most touristic part of Barcelona. It’s the “old town”, called Ciutat Vella , a tight web of streets that’s rich in museums, historical monuments, Roman and Gothic architecture. The names of neighborhoods in Ciutat Vella overlap and can be confusing. This includes the Gothic Quarter, El Raval, Born (which is in La Ribera), Las Ramblas, and La Barceloneta . All are quite central except for La Barceloneta, so staying in these neighborhoods would be convenient.

To save you time and headache, I’ve spent dozens of hours researching top hotels in Barcelona, Spain — handpicking high reviews, evaluating them, and adding my personal knowledge of their locations. Graced with the presence of the majestic Palau de la Musica Catalana and the dramatic Santa María del Mar Cathedral ,  Born  is the hip neighborhood that converts first-time visitors into repeat visitors. With its independent boutiques , trendy bars , and cool galleries , it exemplifies the quintessentially cool Barcelona lifestyle. Alas, its downfall is the gridlocked traffic of eager tourists and endless queues at the Picasso Museum. For exploring, check out the colorful-tiled  Santa Caterina market , a food market where you can pick up some local meats and fruits, and it doesn’t get packed like La Boqueria. Stay here for tapas and nightlife.

What’s nearby? Santa María del Mar Cathedral, Picasso Museum, Born Cultural Center, Ciutadella Park, Palau de la Música, Santa Caterina food market.  Good: Culture, history, and nightlife all in one. Bad: Can be noisy at night, depending where, if you need your zzz’s.

HOTELS IN BORN OR NEARBY:

OHLA HOTEL: 5 stars. This comes HIGHLY recommended from my friends, who stayed at this cool boutique hotel for the SECOND time in June. In other words, they love it! Ohla Hotel’s rooms are clean , sophisticated , and stylish . If you were to go out at night, the hotel is very central , and in a pretty well-lit and safe area. They have a complimentary breakfast , and a modern restaurant and terrace . It also has a killer rooftop view with a cool bar and a small pool. We could see a cruise ship from here! BLACK SWAN HOSTEL: 2 stars. Centrally located near the Arc de Triomf, this cozy and good-vibes hostel hosts paella cooking classes, club outings, movie nights, and a downright friendly atmosphere . Also, if you want more privacy in a shared room, your bed ha s a curtain! For its price, it’s unbeatable. HOTEL REC BARCELONA:   2 stars. This modern , clean, and bright hotel is just 100 meters from the Arc de Triomf. Donning a cosmopolitan vibe , travelers can indulge in a rooftop terrace with 360º views, a delicious tapas bar , seasonal pool , sun terrace , and lounge area . Hotel Rec Barcelona also offers special free activities like beer tasting, a cocktails masterclass, and walking tour… and it’s ADULTS ONLY ! Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic or El Gòtic) is the oldest area. It’s also the most central and touristic, where crowds often walk bumper-to-bumper. It has an abundance of quaint courtyards , historical buildings , labyrinthine alleyways , and endearing traditional bars and shops. Many  walls of the Gothic Quarter are remnants of the Roman Empire, while Plaça de Sant Felip Neri is riddled with bullet holes from the Civil War. Portal de l’Àngel and Carrer Avinyó have an array of high-street and vintage boutiques . You can dance the night away at the trendy clubs around Plaça Reial, a favorite plaza among locals and expats. It’s frenzied, fun , and accessible to the top places to see in Barcelona.

What’s nearby? Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça Reial, Museu Frederic Mares, Santa Maria del Pi Cathedral, Plaça Sant Jaume Good:   Charming, narrow cobblestone streets to wander  Bad:   Tourist trap shops, crowds, and rubbish

GOTHIC QUARTER, BARCELONA HOTELS:

HOTEL BARCELONA CATEDRAL.  4 stars. This boutique hotel is situated in the heart of Barcelona near the Barcelona Cathedral, but tucked away on a quiet street near “The World Begins with Every Kiss” mural. (In fact, my cousin enjoyed staying here with his family! They recommend it! We met up for cocktails at the fashionable bar.) It’s spacious, stylish, clean , and comfortable. You can enjoy the rooftop pool , workout gym , and relaxing restaurant bar . They even offer free Barcelona walking tours and wine and cheese tastings . Las Ramblas

Not a neighborhood but a street, Las Ramblas is the landmark pedestrian promenade that divides the Gothic Quarter and El Raval. It’s packed with flower stands, souvenir vendors, sketch artists, mimes, and 99% tourists soaking in the action. Despite its overcrowdedness, this must-see-at-least-once area is convenient and accessible to all the Barcelona attractions. Stay here if you’re want to save time. You can beat the morning tourist crowds, or have breakfast at the famous Pinotxo Bar or El Quim de La Boqueria. 

What’s nearby? La Boqueria, El Liceu, Christopher Columbus monument, Placa Reial, Maritime Museum, Plaça Catalunya.  Good: You’re in the heart of Barcelona. Bad: Noise and pickpockets.

HOTELS ON LAS RAMBLAS OR NEARBY:

HOSTAL MARE NOSTRUM.  2 stars. Although this hostel is on the busy Las Ramblas, right next to Liceu, it has  soundproofed rooms.  That means you can enjoy from your balcony the vibrant scenery , but also get the rest you’ll need. That’s fantastic for people short on time and want to have Barcelona’s best attractions at your doorstep. It offers free breakfast (rare for a hostel) and a free Barcelona guidebook. HOTEL ESPAÑA RAMBLAS. 4 stars. This hotel comes highly recommended to me by the same cousin, who also stayed here! It’s perfect for first-timers: it’s design-y, spacious , quiet , and VERY central . Hotel España Ramblas is housed in a 19th-century building, which was refurbished in 2010 and designed by the famous Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i  Montaner. (See a video of the stunning atrium here , courtesy my cuz.) Despite the fact that it’s off the boisterous Las Ramblas, it’s actually peaceful. It’s right next to Liceu, and it has a breakfast buffet and a Michelin-recommended restaurant , and a rooftop terrace . It’s just a 5-minute walk to central Plaça Catalunya. La Barceloneta

If you’re keen on staying by the water, La Barceloneta is a beach neighborhood ideal for sea and sand lovers. It has two parts: the tight residential neighborhood , which is a former fishing village — and the breezy, and sometimes chaotic, beach side . Barceloneta Beach gets super packed in the summer. But if you stay here during hot weather, you get a cool sea breeze unlike in the sticky Barcelona center. You can find a   restaurant-lined boardwalk and marina , bars on the beach, and a festive environment equipped with eager beer hawkers. 

What’s nearby? Barceloneta Beach, Maremagnum shopping center, History Museum of Catalunya.  Good: Summer vibes and seafood restaurants. Bad: The sometimes rowdy beach crowds and can be sketchy at night. If you’re a solo woman, take heed.

HOTELS IN LA BARCELONETA OR NEARBY:

HOTEL SANTA MARTA: 2 stars.  This is one of the best hotels in Barcelona near beach – flanked between La Barceloneta and the historic Gothic Quarter. (It’s technically on the lower side of Born but close enough.) Compact but clean , its location is perfect for getting the best of culture, architecture, and sand. It’s also a convenient spot to catch the Hop On Hop Off Bus.  Starting at €47 // See current prices for Hotel Santa Marta

W BARCELONA HOTEL:  5 stars. This iconic hotel sticks out among all the others. Literally, it sticks out from the beach! As one of the best Barcelona beach hotels, this Marriott-run, sail-shaped hotel is of utmost luxury : sleek rooms with sea views, spa , a dining room, two pools , and the bangin’ Eclipse Bar on the 26th floor. And the Hop On Hop Off Bus stop is practically at the doorstep as well. I’ll stay here…one day! Starting at €248 //  See current prices for W Barcelona Hotel

Hotel The Serras:  5 stars. A historical building with elegant industrial style , The Serras was named one of TripAdvisor’s top 25 luxury hotels in the world. The building is the site where renowned artist Pablo Picasso had his first studio. Its interior design boasts minimal geometric patterns and rich fabrics. At this  deluxe hotel , you can expect limousine service, a library with a bar , s oundproofed rooms , and chillout music on the rooftop bar . From there, you can catch sweeping views of Port Vell and the Mediterranean Sea. Starting at €300 // See current prices for Hotel The Serras

I personally don’t recommend sleeping in El Raval , but it’s worth seeing this gritty, diverse , and trendy neighborhood during the day.  What used to be a den of prostitution and drug dealers is today a  juxtaposition of laundry-lined streets, cool cafes , contemporary art galleries , second-hand shops , and trendy restaurants and bar s. It’s also home to the largest immigrant population of Filipino, Pakistani, and North African cultures. For attractions, check out the modern thoroughfare Rambla del Raval, and the large, white Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) with a lively skater plaza.  Unfortunately, drugs and crime have not completely gone away, as active drug wars have occasionally made news headlines in some areas. To stay safe, explore the major streets like Plaça dels Angels, Rambla de Raval, or Carrer Tallers, or visit during daylight.

What’s nearby? MACBA – Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, Rambla del Raval  Good: Exciting, a multifarious place where you can find all the foods and spices your taste buds desires. Bad: Drug wars between neighbors and cops at night. 

As I mentioned, I can’t recommend sleeping here. But if you’re a tough cookie,  check out hotel prices in El Raval.

Eixample (pronounced “eye-shahm-pluh”) is the gridded part of the city, where streets are wider than the tight-knit Ciutat Vella.  It has two parts: Left Eixample and Right Eixample.  La Dreta de l’Eixample (“Right Eixample”) boasts elegant modernist design of wrought-iron street posts, opulent balconies, and intricate facades. Visitors love it for its   chic hotels, posh boutiques, and upscale shopping avenues.  L’Esquerre de L’Eixample (“Left Eixample”), was developed after the Right was built. It’s less ornate and more subtle and residential. For foodies, check out  Sant Antoni,  a neighborhood of L’Esquerre de L’Eixample and a haven of vermouth bars, brunch restaurants, and beguiling bodegas. 

What’s nearby? Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, Casa Mila (La Pedrera), Mercat de Sant Antoni   Good: Gaudí buildings, art nouveau and classy style. Bad: It’s expansive, so parts of it can be further away from main attractions

HOTELS IN EIXAMPLE:

SANT JORDI HOSTEL ROCK PALACE: 2 stars.  Rated as on e of the best hostels in Barcelona, Spain, Sant Jordi has free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour reception, and bright air-conditioned dormitories . Decorated with hip murals , it offers a communal terrace, a shared kitchen with free coffee and tea and a large common room with cable TV and a DVD library. It gets rave reviews for its cleanliness, central location , and fun atmosphere . It’s equipped with a rooftop pool and a rock-bar themed chill-out area . Sant Jordi dorms include free bed linen and security lockers . PRAKTIK VINOTECA:  3 stars. If you’re looking for a chic boutique hotel , Barcelona offers plenty. But the Praktik Vinoteca is a fantastic budget option, plus it has a cool theme: wine! It also has a breakfast buffet , wine tasting sessions , and a complimentary glass of wine upon arrival. It’s clean and tidy, and its soundproofed rooms in a low-key but b area. Gràcia is one of my favorite neighborhoods to wander when I’m craving inspiration and creativity. It’s also a huge hit with young expats and families, who you’ll find meandering the narrow streets and hanging out in its relaxing public squares . Its artsy independent shops , small cinemas , restaurants , and contemporary cafes give it a bohemian flair . There are no huge attractions here, its charm is the small-town vibe . For people-watching, head to the lively Plaça de la Virreina, Plaça del Sol, or Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia.  Take a 20ish-minute stroll uphill to Park Güell , Antoni Gaudí’s playground donning bright tiles and organic shapes that capture cool views of the city. 

What’s nearby? Park Guell (you have to go up a hill from Gràcia)  Good: Its intimate, unsnobby vibe .  Bad: Air pollution from narrow streets, a little far from the main attractions

HOTELS IN GRÀCIA:

HOTEL BESTPRICE GRÀCIA: 1 star.  Hotel BestPrice Gràcia is a clean, modern hotel that comes without the extra bells and whistles but at an economical cost. You get independent bars, restaurants , and boutiques two hops away. Visitors rave about its soundproofed rooms , comfort , and convenience .  Starting at €51 // See current prices for Hotel BestPrice Gràcia

Poblenou  is also one of my favorite neighborhoods because it’s more remote from the crowded city center, but it’s got the beach, culture , and a strong local lifestyle . It used to be known as the Catalan Manchester, for its abundance of factories, textile mills, and distilleries during the Industrial Era. Those old factories and chimneys still remain, as many of them have been converted to art galleries and stylish offices .  The main pedestrian street is the Rambla de Poblenou, a lively thoroughfare which has a handful of terrace bars, restaurants , and shops . Have an ice cream or orxata  (tiger nut drink) at the 100+-year-old Tió Che. Also check out the new renovated Plaça Glories , which has the phallic Torre AGBAR building and the outdoor Glories Shopping Center. 

What’s nearby? Torre AGBAR, Design Museum, Rambla de Poblenou  Good: Uncongested and breezy. Bad: It takes about 10-20 minutes to get to the city centre.

HOTELS IN POBLENOU:

OCCIDENTAL ATENEO MAR (ADULTS ONLY):   4 stars.  This modern , relaxing beach hotel is for travelers who wants a luxurious experience in Barcelona with the beach nearby. It’s only 150 meters to the Mar Bella Beach (my favorite city beach). Each of the 191 rooms has an outward-facing cityview  or seaview . For maximum relaxation, you can pamper yourself using their seasonal infinity pool , hot/dry/salt sauna , fitness studio , Balinese beds , or snack bar . Tips on choosing where to stay.

• Best places to stay in Barcelona for tourists short on time : I suggest Born, Gothic Quarter, or near Las Ramblas to stay. They are the closest to the main attractions, and they’re the most vibrant and interesting.
• Best places to stay in Barcelona for nightlife : Born, Sant Antoni, El Raval (contested as a “bad neighborhood of Barcelona”), and Gothic Quarter have popular tapas and cocktail bars. The beachside near Poblenou has some dance clubs.
• Best places to stay in Barcelona for foodies: try Born, Poble Sec, El Raval, Gothic Quarter, or Sant Antoni. Vermouth bars, tapas bars, and bodegas are THE “thing to do”. But you can find excellent, authentic Catalan restaurants scattered throughout the city.
• Best places to stay in Barcelona for families : choose a hotel that’s close to attractions as to avoid lots of schlepping kids (I have 3 little ones myself): Gothic Quarter, Born, Las Ramblas, or even Eixample, but closer to the center. In my opinion, a family-friendly hotel is more important than the location. Just don’t stay in El Raval.

MORE BARCELONA TRAVEL TIPS

1. As I mentioned, walking and using public transportation is the best way to get around Barcelona. In Ciutat Vella, your own two feet should get you around.

2. The cheapest, easiest transportation to use is a card called the T-Casual (formerly the T-10 card), which is valid for the bus, metro, tram, and commuter train (RENFE). This means there are 10 trips on each ticket. You can’t share it. Buy them at any metro or train station kiosk. You cannot use the card simultaneously with another person on the same trip. Read more about it on the official public transportation website .

3. La Sagrada Familia is in Eixample, but take the bus or metro (L2 or L5 stops: Sagrada Familia) to get there. I don’t suggest staying there because it’s quite residential with no other major attractions.

4. Use good ol’ Google Maps  for mapping out your routes. It’s is my go-to for public transportation times, and it tends to be reliable.

5. Beware of pickpockets . Barcelona is not a violent city, but petty theft is rampant. Protect your wallet or purse, and you should be fine.

Choosing the perfect area can make or break a trip, so we’ve broken down this article into our top four areas to help you choose the right neighborhood in Barcelona. You’ll find our top hotel picks in each area at every price point.

The Bari Gothic Quarter of Barcelona is arguably the most desirable area to stay in, which is why it gets so much foot traffic. It’s close to many of Barcelona’s most popular attractions and has many great restaurants—another reason why people love it.

The Gothic Quarter shares a border with La Rambla and El Raval (listed below), and it’s my favorite area to hang out in Barcelona during the day because of all the action. Staying in the Gothic Quarter is cheaper, but Barcelona is far less expensive than other cities like Paris or Rome.

I love staying in the Gothic Quarter if I’m traveling with my wife as we like to shop and go out for drinks at night. The area has some cool hotels, which is why many travelers have the area at the top of their list. Be aware that the area can be a bit seedy at night, but it’s safe enough to enjoy during the day.

Modern rooms blend with medieval architecture and mix that with a great rooftop bar and a small but beautiful pool, and there is everything you could possibly need for a relaxing trip. Ohla Barcelona

€€€ | 5 Star | Great Rooftop Pool Romain Fornell heads up the wonderful in-house restaurant specializing in fantastic Catalan cuisine. The rooms are modern and spacious with all the modern amenities you could ask for. Add in the rooftop bar and the pool with city skyline views, and it’s easy to understand why Ohla is one of Barcelona’s most popular hotels.

€€ | 4 Star | Great Rooftop Pool | Excellent Prices | Sustainable There are a lot of rooftop pools in this city, right? This doesn’t make the H10 Cubiks rooftop any less special. The H10 scores high on the sustainable charts as well, with 100% renewable energy used to power the hotel and water-saving features throughout. On top of that, they reinvest a portion of profits into local community projects and sustainability projects. A great choice if you trying to make your trip as sustainable as possible.

Duquesa de Cardona

€€€ | 4 Star | Rooftop Pool | Harbor Views Located in a stately building dating to the 1850s and sitting right opposite Barcelonas Port Vell, the Duquese is a stately yet modern choice. With a beautiful rooftop terrace overlooking the harbor and live music most weekends, this is a great spot to make your base. Location, Photos, and Booking

If I’m headed to Barcelona with my family, I prefer to stay in Eixample. The entire neighborhood is nice, and there are some super posh areas too. It’s far enough from Ciutat Vella that the busy nightlife doesn’t bother us, but it’s ideally located for exploring the city on foot.

As you can see in the map above, the Eixample district is massive. So, my recommendations for staying in Eixample refer mostly to the areas around Passeig de Gràcia between Plaça de Catalunya and Plaça Cinc d’Oros. It’s close to the Gothic Quarter border, so you get the best of both areas.

Pro Tip: “Eixample” is pronounced eye-SHAM-plah.

El Raval is another area that’s full of life and things to do. It’s a great Barcelona neighborhood for younger travelers, couples, and the more adventurous tourists. If you like to party and aren’t bothered by evening nightlife, then this is definitely the place for you. You can always ask if your preferred hotel has great soundproofing too.

You’ll find a lot of university students here, so you can expect a growing foodie scene too. This is also home to a great arts scene, a contemporary art museum, and a harbor where you can find medieval boat replicas. Talk about old meeting new!

La Barceloneta is the place to be if you prefer active nightlife, beach vibes, and chill days. You’re not too far from the main attractions in the Gothic Quarter or Eixample, but you can be right on one of several beaches. La Barceloneta is known for delicious seafood restaurants that have the freshest fish available since it’s also where you’ll find the harbor.

There are a few family-friendly beaches to enjoy and a clothing-optional beach if that appeals to you. Definitely stop in at a chiringuitos (beach bar) for a refreshing drink to enjoy on your lounge chair.

But if you’re looking for a little activity, then rent a bike and pedal along the beach bike bath and find the Christopher Columbus statue. For a laid-back vacation in Barcelona, the beaches of La Barceloneta are a top place to stay.

Barcelona Neighbourhood Map

To get your bearings I’ve created a tourist  map of Barcelona neighbourhoods .

This is a great jumping off point for finding a value hotel , Airbnb , apartment , or hostel . I’ve gone into this in depth in my list of the best areas to stay in Barcelona but first it’s best to take a look:

A good rule of thumb when looking for lodging is:

• Attractions : Eixample
• Nightlife : The Gothic Quarter
• Local charm : Gracia
• Beach proximity : Barceloneta
• Food + Art : El Born
• Hipster vibe + affordability : Raval

The Ciutat Vella  has three parts from left to right: Raval, the Gothic Quarter, and El Born.

Most airport transport like the famous Aerobus takes you to the purple ‘C’ button at  Plaça de Catalunya , the city’s most central square. From here you can connect to the metro.

The other neighbourhoods not mentioned have cheaper accommodation as they’re less central.

Barcelona Metro Map

With 6 lines connecting the entire city you’ll be 20 minutes from anywhere. Almost every major attraction is served by the network save Tibidabo Amusement Park .

The top 15-20 are really nice to see and you should be able to cover most of these sights in about 3 days. The rest is well worth it too, and if you have 4-5 days in Barcelona, you should be able to see most of the places mentioned in this guide.

Top 3 Places Not to Miss in Barcelona:

• Sagrada Familia (Be sure to upgrade to Tower access!) .
• Park Güell .
• Casa Batlló .

These are the main landmarks, best sights, and top tourist attractions in Barcelona:

1. La Sagrada Familia

One of Barcelona’s most famous buildings, the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia (Basilica of the Holy Family) is an architectural masterpiece that should be at the top of any Spain bucket list . If there is one landmark that you absolutely cannot miss in Barcelona, it’s Sagrada Familia. As impressive as it is, seeing the church from the outside isn’t enough – you really have to visit the inside too!

Designed by the genius architect Antoni Gaudí, La Sagrada is truly breathtaking. No words or pictures do it justice – it’s a place you have to experience first-hand.

Filled with rich detail, its interior is bathed in fairytale-like rainbow hues as the light filters through the colorful glass windows. The atmosphere is almost surreal and the view inside the naves – looking up at the tree-like columns surrounding the vaulted ceiling – defies description.

Good to know: Do not confuse La Sagrada Familia with the Cathedral of Barcelona . Whilst the most famous and most visited, Basilica La Sagrada Familia is not a Cathedral . The actual Barcelona Cathedral is also well worth a visit – you’ll find more information about it further below.

Interesting fact: Although the construction started at the end of the 19th century, La Sagrada Familia is still not completely finished. The building has been under construction for over 130 years! Whilst most of the interior is now complete, you’ll notice that work is still being done to the exterior. The aim is to finish it by 2026, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s passing. It’s fun to spot the differences in architectural styles and colors as you walk around.

Good to know: Be sure to get skip-the-line tickets in advance to avoid wasting time queuing. Plan 1.5-2 hours for your visit, and – in high season – allow some extra waiting time (even with priority tickets, you’ll have to locate the dedicated entrance, pass the security check, etc).

Best time to visit: If you want to avoid the crowds, visit La Sagrada Familia first thing in the morning. However, mid-morning or mid to late afternoon is the best time light-wise. That’s when the sunlight strikes the windows directly, enhancing the colorful illumination within the church. We visited at around 2 PM and the light was mesmerizing!

TIP: Instead of just getting tickets and going on your own, we highly recommend booking a guided tour which will come with priority access tickets. There is so much symbolism, so many interesting details, and stories about La Sagrada that you would totally miss without a guide. Having a guide will enhance your visit to any of the Gaudi buildings, but especially at La Sagrada Familia!

PRO TIP: If available for your travel date, upgrade your ticket to include tower access. Some guided tours also give this option. It doesn’t matter which tower you choose – Passion Facade Tower or Nativity Facade Tower, the views are just as spectacular, and you get to see the incredible architectural details of the towers and the rooftops from close by. It’s one of the most unique experiences in Barcelona!

2. Gothic Quarter – Old Town of Barcelona

The Ciutat Vella – Barcelona’s Old Town – is made up of four main areas. The most popular and the most beautiful to see is the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter). No matter how long your trip is, this area is not to be missed in Barcelona!

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is a rather compact area located southeast of Pla ça de Catalunya and perched between the streets of La Rambla to the west and Via Laietana to the east.

It’s a fascinating part of the town, with a network of narrow medieval streets and stunning examples of the Gothic stone architecture that gave it its name.

It’s here that you’ll find many of the oldest churches of Barcelona, including the 13-15th-century Cathedral of Barcelona (more about it below). And be sure to explore the neighborhood’s many squares, including the most famous of them all, Plaça Reial (Royal Square).

TIP: The 19th-century  Plaça Reial is one of the must-sees in Barcelona! It’s a lively city square lined with tall palm trees, a fountain in the middle, and lamps designed by Gaudi. This is a popular meeting place with many restaurants and cafes – ideal to relax, have a drink, and do some people-watching. If you visit on a Sunday morning, you’ll find the coin- and stamp collectors’ market here as well.

But the history of the Gothic Quarter goes back much further, with parts dating back to Roman times. Inside the area’s City History Museum (MUHBA – more info further below), you can even visit a subterranean Roman town. Here you’ll see ancient houses, streets, and workplaces.

Good to know: The Gothic Quarter is packed with bars and restaurants and has a very lively nightlife. It’s also great for shopping, with plenty of little boutiques to explore.

TIP: There are many really nice tours that visit this part of town (often in combination with other popular sights in Barcelona). You can choose from walking tours , bike tours , or food tours – it’s a fun way to get to know the city a bit better.

3. Barcelona Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia – also known as Barcelona Cathedral – is the main attraction in the Old Town. It’s a traditional Gothic cathedral, totally different from La Sagrada Familia, but worth a visit just as much.

Dating back to the 13th to 15th centuries, Barcelona Cathedral is a beautiful building with a spectacular interior that simply must not be missed. Its facade is famous for its gargoyles, along with domestic and mythical animals.

But what many people don’t realize is that its elaborate exterior was actually a 19th-century addition! Its original features were much more simple and can still be seen along the Cathedral’s sides.

Be sure to take a walk in the picturesque garden , filled with tall palms and magnolias. Here you will find the Well of the Geese (Fuente de las Ocas). This is a large, raised pond filled with thirteen white geese. Some say they are there to safeguard the cathedral’s treasures – geese were traditionally kept by the Romans as security guards. Others say they are there to represent the age of Christian martyr Saint Eulàlia when she died.

TIP: It’s also well worth taking the elevator to the Cathedral roof . Here you can get a good view of the Barcelona skyline.

Good to know: You’ll need a ticket to visit the Cathedral. It is now possible to book this ticket online and we highly recommend doing that! The ticket includes fast-track entry to the Cathedral, access to the rooftops, the Chapter Room, and more. For more info about opening times and tickets, see their website .

Also, you should wear appropriate clothing (knees and shoulders covered) for your visit here – shorts and revealing clothes are considered disrespectful.

4. Park Güell

Park Güell is another of the most famous Gaudi attractions and a must-see in Barcelona!

This magical garden was commissioned by the Spanish entrepreneur Eusebi Güell. He wanted a stylish park for Barcelona’s aristocracy to enjoy and this magnificent open space was the result.

You can see beautiful tiling here, along with unique stone structures, detailed mosaics, and a wonderful dragon staircase with a fountain. There is even a small house in which Gaudi lived at one point. This is now a museum and contains interesting pieces of furniture that he designed.

TIP: Be sure to book your tickets ahead of your visit, as they are usually sold out at least a few days in advance. Many of our readers told us that they weren’t able to visit the park because they didn’t think to book in advance, and our local guide confirmed that this is indeed often the case.

PRO TIP: If you didn’t get the tickets in time, try to see if you can still join one of the guided tours that visit the park . They usually prebook some extra tickets to accommodate last-minute bookings.

Good to know: Park Güell is located a bit outside of the city center. The closest metro station to the park is about 15 minutes away, so if you are very short on time you may prefer to take a taxi. Also, wear comfy footwear! Much of the walking is uphill and many of the paths are made from dirt. Sneakers are ideal.

5. Plaça de Catalunya

Located in the very heart of Barcelona, Plaça de Catalunya is a large plaza, the central square of the city. It’s here that the Gothic Quarter, the neighborhoods of El Raval and l’Eixample, and the most prominent streets such as La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia come together. It doesn’t get any more central!

Plaça de Catalunya is a popular meeting place in Barcelona – for locals and tourists alike. Many city tours start here, and – because there’s enough space for big buses to park – quite a lot of tours that go outside the city also start here.

This large city square is a hub of activity, with frequent fiestas and live musical performances. Its perimeter is lined with statues and there are fountains and green verges, giving you somewhere to sit for a while and soak it all up.

Surrounding the square are many great eateries (including the Hard Rock Cafe , for the fans). Shopping is good here too, with – among others – a large branch of El Corte Ingles, Spain’s biggest department store chain.

Good to know: To appreciate the plaza without the crowds (and noise) visit on the weekend in the morning.

TIP: For an impressive, birds-eye view of the plaza and the city beyond, check out the self-service restaurant at the very top level of the El Corte Ingles shopping center. It’s one of the best – and free – viewpoints in Barcelona’s city center.

6. La Rambla

La Rambla (aka Las Ramblas) is probably Barcelona’s most famous street and no trip to the city would be complete without walking through it. Connecting Plaça de Catalunya to the waterfront area La Rambla crosses the heart of Barcelona’s old town, with many of Barcelona’s most famous sights just nearby.

This wide tree-lined avenue with a wide pedestrian area in the middle is packed with street musicians, souvenir vendors, and people enjoying drinks on the restaurants’ terraces.

It’s busy – crowded – at La Rambla every day. But visit early in the morning and you’ll find it much quieter. This will give you an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful architecture and other interesting sights here.

Check out the Font de Canaletes , a small drinking fountain where Barcelona football club fans come to celebrate the team’s victories. Drinking from this fountain is said to guarantee your return to the city (I haven’t tried though)…

Other spots worth visiting include Gran Teatre del Liceu and Palau Güell , an impressive mansion designed by Gaudi. Also the earlier mentioned Gothic Quarter with Plaça Reial – beautifully decorated with palm trees – and Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol square with Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi is just nearby.

Casa Bruno Cuadros – a building at the corner of La Rambla and Plaça Boqueria – with Chinese mosaics, umbrellas, and a huge dragon on the facade is also noteworthy.

Good to know: Restaurants and cafes on La Rambla tend to be of quite poor quality. Your best dining option in the area is to head to the Boqueria market instead (see below) or check out the restaurants in the Gothic Quarter just nearby.

Also, La Rambla is so busy and so touristy that it’s one of the places where you really have to watch out for pickpockets!

7. Casa Batlló

Designed by Gaudi, the iconic architecture of Casa Batlló in the city center attracts a million visitors every year. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Barcelona.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the building was originally constructed in 1877, at which point it had a very unoriginal appearance. But when local businessman Josep Batlló y Casanovas bought it in 1903, he called in Gaudi to work his magic. It then evolved into the spectacular work of art we see today!

Its exterior and interior – like all of Gaudi’s work – is absolutely unique, from the extravagant facade all the way to the dragon roof. The entrance hall has an underwater feel, whilst the Noble Floor features massive oak doors with stained glass panes. The dining room at its center leads out to a beautiful and tranquil rear courtyard, beautifully paved and dotted with tile and glass-coated flower pots.

Strange as it may sound, make sure you check out the building’s elevator too. Installed in the center of the patio of lights, it still uses its beautiful and original wooden car.

The newest addition is the immersive Casa Batllo 10D Experience with two immersive rooms – the Gaudi Dome and the Gaudi Cube. The art literally comes to life as you approach! Just be sure to choose the right ticket option – depending on what you want to see and how much time you have inside. See more info below as well.

Good to know: Casa Batllo is open daily to visitors and takes around an hour to explore. Be sure to get your tickets in advance and plan to visit first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon, when it is less crowded.

NEW! There’s now a special, early access available to Casa Batllo with this ‘Be the First’ ticket . If you don’t mind getting up earlier and want to see one of the most special Gaudi buildings in Barcelona without the crowds, check it out!

TIP: We visited here with this tour that also visits La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and allows you to see a few other Gaudi landmarks in about half a day. The guide took us inside Casa Batllo before the building opened to the general public. It was magical!

8. Casa Milà

Casa Milà , also known as La Pedrera (the stone quarry), is another famous Gaudi building and a very popular place to see in Barcelona. Like Casa Battlo, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is equally busy to visit!

Casa Mila is famous for its unusual rough-hewn, wavy appearance. Incredibly, it does not have a single straight line and looks almost organic rather than something manmade.

The most impressive is its rooftop and chimneys that you can see up close if you visit inside.

TIP: If you are looking for an even more special experience, you can visit here in the evening, after dark. The rooftop is lit up and you can experience a spectacular light show. For more info and tickets for the La Pedrera night experience, see here .

Good to know: Just like all the Gaudi sights, Casa Mila is an extremely popular attraction in Barcelona. So if you want to be sure to see the interior, you really should get skip-the-line tickets in advance !

Consider this: Casa Battlo and Casa Mila are both iconic landmarks, among the most visited Barcelona attractions. Even with fast-track access, trying to see both of them can eat up too much of your precious time in Barcelona.

So depending on your overall sightseeing itinerary, you might prefer to visit the inside of only one of these buildings and appreciate the other one from the outside.

Opinions differ on which is best – Casa Mila or Casa Battlo. The majority of visitors seem to agree that the interior of Casa Battlo really shouldn’t be missed, so if you can visit just one of the two, make it Casa Battlo, and then admire Casa Mila from the outside. They’re located very close to each other, just 5 minutes walk between the two.

9. Passeig de Gràcia

One of the city’s most important avenues, Passeig de Gràcia is another place you really have to see in Barcelona. Along this famous street, you’ll find some of Barcelona’s most remarkable architecture, high-end boutiques, plus cafés, bars, and restaurants.

Some of the most impressive buildings in Barcelona can be found on Passeig de Gràcia. The earlier-mentioned Casa Battlo and Casa Mila are located here.

Plus, there are many other buildings by other prominent architects including the most famous mansions such as Casa Amatller (this one can also be visited inside ), Casa Lleó Morera , Casa Mulleras , and Casa Josefina Bonet .

TIP: Note the hexagonal tiles on the pavements ! Designed by Gaudi, they all follow the same pattern with natural elements such as starfish, ammonites, and algae. The design was originally meant for the floors of Casa Batllo but was later used for the service floors inside Casa Mila. Recently, the sidewalks of Passeig de Gracia have been paved with tiles produced using this Gaudi design.

Many people come to Passeig de Gràcia just to shop. Indeed, it’s one of the best places for luxury shopping in Barcelona.

There are plenty of renowned international designer stores to choose from, including Prada, Chanel, and Gucci. Or you can head all the way into Gracia Village, where Passeig de Gràcia ends. Here you’ll find an interesting collection of independent boutiques, organic health-food eateries, and stores selling up-cycled furniture.

And if you want to take a break from sightseeing and shopping, you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars at which to stop and enjoy lunch or dinner.

Good to know: Gracia village has lots of outdoor squares lined with laid-back cafes and bars. And its nightlife is excellent, attracting a young and local crowd.

10. Mercado de La Boqueria

Barcelona has 12 large covered 19th-century markets scattered all over the city.

The best-known and most popular indoor market is the Mercado de La Boqueria , housed in a stunning glass and steel building in the heart of La Rambla.

Boqueria Market is a real foodie’s paradise, with local meats, cheeses, and seafood along with a range of exotic and colorful fruits and vegetables. It’s a great place to go for lunch or a quick snack when sightseeing in Barcelona city center.

Good to know: The marker is open every day from morning through to the evening (except on Sundays)

Market stalls and bars selling food and drinks are dotted throughout the market. You may not always be able to sit down as you eat, but you can certainly enjoy the lively atmosphere and bustle!

TIP: Head to the stalls at the back of the market for the best prices – those at the front pay more rent, so they charge more too! And be sure to try one of the many different kinds of freshly squeezed fruit juice while you’re here. They are yummy!

11. Picasso Museum

Picasso Museum is one of the most visited museums in Barcelona. Containing the world’s largest collection of Picasso’s work, the museum is well worth a visit, but you should know that the majority of art you’ll see here dates from his early years. So it might not be exactly what you expect to see based on Picasso’s most famous works…

Although Picasso was born in Malaga, he spent his formative years in Barcelona. Subsequently, it was the place he most considered home. The Picasso Museum honors that connection and contains an extensive collection of his lesser-known works. There are more than 4,200 pieces to view, all chronologically arranged to show the evolution of his art.

You don’t need to be a Picasso fan to appreciate this museum – indeed, there are very few Cubist paintings at all. This museum mostly showcases how his art developed from a traditional style into the rather more unconventional works that made him famous.

It’s really interesting to see how Picasso evolved as an artist and how his style changed with time!

The museum is located in a magnificent medieval building in the old town – somewhat at odds with the style of its subject. However, this also means that the rooms are quite small and it can get very busy at times.

Good to know: The museum is open daily except for Mondays. Count about 1-1.5 hours for a visit.

You can visit the museum on your own (free entrance is included with Barcelona Card and also with the Top-6 Museums Card ). But if you want to learn more about the artist and get a better understanding of his works, there’s also a very good guided tour of the museum .

TIP: Just like the majority of Barcelona museums, you can visit here free of charge at certain times. At the moment of writing, the entrance is free on the first Sunday of the month and from 4 PM on Thursdays.

12. Sant Pau Recinte Modernista

Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site (also known as Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau or Sant Pau Recinte Modernista ) is a true architectural gem of Barcelona! However, this is one of those places that usually get overlooked in most Barcelona sightseeing itineraries which are mainly focused on the world-famous Gaudi buildings.

But if you have an hour to spare, I highly recommend visiting the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site! For us, it was one of the highlights of Barcelona that we really wouldn’t have wanted to miss.

Designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, this is a big architectural complex that housed a hospital for more than eighty years. Restored in 2009, it is now a museum called the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site is just a 10-minute walk from La Sagrada Familia . But it has an entirely different feel to it, with few tourists and no street vendors. So close and yet a world apart!

The atmosphere here is magical and tranquil, with beautiful gardens surrounded by art-nouveau architecture. You can see many of the buildings of the former hospital and visit several of them.

Make sure you check out the interior of the Sant Rafael Pavilion. It has been restored to look exactly as it would have done in the 1920s, with antique radiators and hospital beds. And don’t miss the underground tunnels connecting the former hospital rooms with surgical facilities.

Good to know: Sant Pau Recinte Modernista is open daily, except for some public holidays. Here, you can find more info and book tickets .

TIP: If you can, visit here in the late afternoon when the buildings turn bright orange, colored by the setting sun. It’s absolutely impressive! However, this will depend on the season when you visit – in the summer, the sun sets much later than in the fall when we visited.

Anyway, no matter the time of day or season, don’t miss this stunning landmark in Barcelona. It’s absolutely worth a short detour from La Sagrada Familia!

WINTER TIP: If you are visiting Barcelona during the holiday season (+-end November – mid-January), don’t miss Els Llums de Sant Pau Christmas Garden . The entire site is then lit up with millions of Christmas lights – it’s absolutely magical!

13. Palau de la Música Catalana

The Palau de la Música Catalana is one of the architectural gems of Barcelona! Just as the above-mentioned Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, this beautiful concert hall was also designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

The exterior is very striking, with bright colors and detailed mosaics. Unfortunately, it is a little hard to appreciate because the streets surrounding it are so narrow. But step inside and you cannot help but be mesmerized by the lavish interior, with its ornate glass roof.

This music hall doesn’t appear in many Barcelona travel guides. And maybe that’s a good thing, as it allows you to enjoy the stunning beauty of this building in relative peace. But now that you know about it, be sure to visit!

We stumbled upon it by coincidence when researching something else and decided to check it out. It became one of our favorite places in Barcelona!

Good to know: You can freely visit the entrance hall and cafe, both of which are stunning. Normally, you need to join a guided tour in order to see the main concert hall, but they now have an option for a self-guided tour as well.

Tours take around 45 minutes, so if you visit on your own, count at least half an hour.

Palau de la Música Catalana is a working concert hall, so you can also attend a concert here. The sightseeing visits during the day are usually available every day, year-round. However, during certain events, the music hall might not be open for visits. So if you want to see it inside, be sure to check in advance!

TIP: Whether you want to visit on your own or with their guide, be sure to book the tickets in advance . That way, you’ll also immediately see if some dates aren’t available. Also, while not very widely known, the place is popular enough to fill the available ticket slots, especially during the high season.

14. Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

Located below the Palau Nacional Art Museum ( MNAC ) on the Montjuïc mountain, The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc (Font Màgica de Montjuïc) is one of Barcelona’s most popular attractions. And it’s FREE!

Every evening, this dancing fountain offers stunning displays of music, light, and water acrobatics. These music- and light shows are very popular with locals and tourists alike and attract big crowds.

Arrive here at least 15-30 minutes before the show in order to secure a good spot close to the fountains. In the high season, people usually start to arrive an hour in advance.

Practical information: The best way to get to Font Màgica de Montjuïc is by taking a metro to Plaça d’Espanya. If you have more time, plan half a day for a visit – take a cable car from the waterfront area, explore the Montjuïc mountain and Miro Museum (see below), and then see the fountains in the evening.

Magic Fountain show times vary per season:

• March: Thursday to Saturday from 8 PM to 9 PM.
• April, May, October : Thursday to Saturday from 9 PM to 10 PM.
• June, July, August, September: Wednesday to Sunday from 9.30 PM to 10.30 PM.
• November, December + the first week of January: Thursday to Saturday from 8 PM to 9 PM.
• Rest of January and February: closed.
• This is general info in ‘normal’ times, but be sure to double-check online for the up-to-date schedule before you go!

Good to know: If you are visiting the city in September, then you can see The ‘Piromusical’ here. This huge firework display with accompanying music and lasers is the closing event for La Mercè – Barcelona’s main festival.

TIP: Be sure to climb the staircase to Palau Nacional on Montjuïc – the views from the top are really nice . However, this is actually something that you’ll appreciate better during the day when it’s light or at sunset – a good reason to arrive earlier and explore the area. You can find more information about other attractions on Montjuïc further below.

15. Montjuïc: Cable Car, Castle, Palau Nacional & City Views

Montjuïc (the Jewish Mountain) is the best-known hill in Barcelona. It houses several parks, botanical gardens, places, pavilions, and museums, many of which were built for the 1929 World Fair that was held in Barcelona.

Nowadays, it’s a popular place to visit in the city and some of the must-see sights mentioned in this guide are located in this area (such as the Magical Fountain, the Museum of National Art of Catalonia , Joan Miro Museum , or an open-air museum Poble Espanyol ).

But the majority of tourists come here for aerial views of the city from the Montjuïc cable car , the Montjuïc Castle, and other viewpoints nearby. Also the earlier-mentioned views from the staircase at Palau Nacional on Montjuïc are not to be missed.

Good to know: While you can walk to the top of the mountain from the city center, the easiest way to get here is by taking a cable car from the waterfront or by hop-on-hop-off bus .

TIP: A nice way to visit Montjuïc is by joining an e-bike tour . Or you can visit with a walking tour that includes a cable car ride .

With a local guide, you don’t have to wonder where exactly to go or what to see and do at Montjuïc (which is a big advantage because the area is really big and it’s quite overwhelming).

16. Joan Miró Foundation

Located on Montjuïc Mountain, Joan Miró Foundation is one of the best contemporary art museums in Barcelona

There are artworks by Joan Miró throughout Barcelona, but this museum is dedicated purely to his art. Well worth a visit and fun for all ages!

Housing more than 10,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other pieces, it is located in an innovative building designed by the Spanish architect, Rafael Moneo. There are beautiful gardens to explore and frequent exhibitions of the works of other artists.

TIP: Be sure to visit the rooftop terrace of the museum. Along with a collection of Miró’s colorful sculptures, you can also enjoy some wonderful views across the city.

We just got the tickets on the spot and there was no need to book in advance. However, we visited in a rather quiet season.

17. Port Vell

No visit to Barcelona would be complete without a walk along its waterfront at Port Vell .

Port Vell is the Old Harbour of Barcelona, with a wide waterfront promenade leading down to the city’s famous beaches. It’s a bustling area with lots of cafes, restaurants, and also the History Museum of Catalonia .

Check out Rambla De Mar , a modern bridge/walkway that connects the city center to the modern bustling area with Barcelona Aquarium and Maremagnum shopping center.

It’s also nice to just take a stroll around the harbor and admire the yachts and boats moored there.

18. La Barceloneta

Port Vell borders the historic neighborhood called La Barceloneta . This charming local area was an old fishing district .

La Barceloneta is lined with narrow one-way streets towered by high apartment buildings, with laundry hanging out the windows everywhere you look.

Despite its relatively central location in Barcelona, this neighborhood has a very traditional feel, with elderly gentlemen sitting in the streets outside their houses and women calling across to each other over balconies.

Good to know: There are many good restaurants in this area offering fresh seafood options. It is a nice place to come for lunch or dinner.

The restaurants at the waterfront tend to be more touristy, but – despite having pictures on the menu and overly friendly waiters trying to convince you to choose their place – the food is generally very good.

TIP: For a more local feel a bit off the beaten path, check out the restaurants in the narrow side streets of La Barceloneta. There are many great choices and all types of cuisine, not just seafood.

19. Barcelona Beaches & Waterfront

Barcelona Waterfront is a large coastal area stretching between Playa de Llevant Beach on the outskirts of the city center and the Cruise Ship Terminal in the city center. This commercial and recreational area was created in the early 1990s and has some of Barcelona’s best beaches and a beautiful wide pedestrian area where you can walk/bike/skate for miles .

Barcelona has miles of scenic coastline and some beaches are just a 15-minute walk from the city center. There is something very special about being able to spend half a day admiring Barcelona’s incredible architecture and visiting landmarks, and then relaxing in the sunshine on a beautiful beach in the afternoon!

Some beaches are bustling – crowded with tourists, hawkers, and street performers. Others are far more peaceful, perfect for unwinding with a good book and a cold drink.

Closer to the center, there is also a maritime station for ferries and you can watch cruise ships come in to dock. You’ll also find the Maritime Museum here, housed in a large medieval shipyard, plus L’Aquàrium , one of the largest aquariums in Europe.

TIP: Why not get a different perspective on the city by taking a trip in one of the Golondrinas (ferries) moored opposite the Columbus Monument and take in all the sights of the waterfront! Or book one of the amazing sailing cruises – it’s a great way to see the city from another perspective while at the same time relaxing from all the walking and sightseeing.

Good to know: If you’re looking for a party atmosphere and want to connect with like-minded visitors from all over the world, head to Barceloneta Beach. The nightlife in Barceloneta is very vibrant too! For the best family-friendly option, try Nova Icaria Beach. Whilst tranquil, it still has plenty of restaurants and bars, plus some excellent sports facilities.

You might want to avoid cocktails and drinks from vendors walking along the beaches. They are often unrefrigerated for long periods and tend to warm up!

20. Camp Nou – F.C. Barcelona Stadium

Update 2024: At the moment of the last update, Camp Nou Stadium is undergoing a complete renovation. It is still possible to visit the museum .

Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe and the home stadium of the world-famous F.C. Barcelona. This is a must-see for any football fanatics but is actually really interesting even if you are not a fan. Camp Nou is one of the most-visited tourist attractions in Barcelona!

We went here mainly because of our kids who live and breathe football, but – despite having zero expectations – I loved it too. After all, it’s not every day that you get to experience such a large stadium with behind-the-scenes access!

Tours include the pitch, the stands, and the players’ bench, along with the changing rooms and press area. Also included is a visit to the museum where you can see the many trophies on display and learn more about the club’s amazing history.

Good to know: The stadium is located a bit outside the city center. You can get here by metro or by hop-on hop-off bus .

TIP: There are various ticket- and tour options for a visit here. The most popular – and the option we chose – is a self-guided stadium- and museum tour. Another option is a guided tour, but I’d only recommend it to those who want to learn even more about the team and its history.

If you’re looking for a more exclusive experience, you can also opt for the Players Experience Tour which includes everything the standard tour does, plus access to the actual FC Barcelona players’ locker rooms, an official FC Barcelona gift, and a few other perks.

21. Casa Vicens

Casa Vicens is a modernist building dating from the end of the 19th century. It is considered to be Gaudi’s first major project

Unique in style, Casa Vicens looks nothing like the other Gaudi buildings in Barcelona! Its look is distinctly oriental, with dome-shaped finishes and Moorish arches. Its design was influenced by the art of India, Persia, and Japan along with Hispanic Islamic works.

Built in 1883-85 as a family summer house in the former village of Gràcia (now one of the city neighborhoods), the building was expanded by another architect in 1925. By that time, Gaudi was mainly focused on La Sagrada Familia, with little interest in other projects. But the original style was retained.

Casa Vicens has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recently restored to its former glory.

As with all of Gaudi’s buildings, the interior of Casa Vicens does not disappoint either. You can easily spend 1 to 2 hours here admiring the bizarre but beautiful decorative elements of its rooms.

TIP: Casa Vicens is hardly ever mentioned among the best places to see in Barcelona, and so many tourists don’t even know about it. This is mainly due to the fact that it was only opened to the public a few years ago is far less known than Gaudi’s other buildings.

This means that it is much quieter, making it a great place to visit in Barcelona if you prefer to avoid crowds .

Good to know: Casa Vicens is open daily. You can find more information and get the tickets here . Despite being somewhat of a hidden gem, it’s becoming better known as more and more people discover it. So get there before the rest of the world finds out!

22. Palau Güell

Güell Palace – not to be confused with Park Güell – is one of Gaudi’s early works and another popular landmark to see in Barcelona. This magnificent building is located in the Raval district – close to La Rambla shopping street in the heart of the city center. This is the only Gaudi building that is located in the old town .

This modernist mansion was commissioned by the industrial tycoon Eusebi Güell in the late 19th century. He wanted somewhere luxurious to live in an area that was very run down at the time. He certainly got his wish – every part of this incredible palace is decorative and opulent, from the forged iron gates at the front to the roof terrace adorned with mosaics and fourteen chimneys.

Good to know: Palau Güell is open daily except for Mondays. A free audio guide is included with your ticket. For more info and tickets, see here .

TIP: If you are visiting in the summer, check if there are any events planned here during your stay. Frequent concerts are held on the rooftop terrace of Palau Gëull and tickets include a tour around the palace.

23. Barcelona History Museum (MUHBA)

MUHBA – Museum of History of Barcelona – is one the most interesting museums in the city. Here, you can see the archeological site with the actual remains of streets and buildings of Barcelona as it looked like about 2000 years ago.

Located inside the Palau Clarina Padellàs (the Gothic Palace) on Plaça del Rei just behind the Barcelona Cathedral, this fascinating museum is dedicated to researching and preserving Barcelona’s history. It contains more than 35,000 historical and cultural objects.

There are also several other sites managed by the museum around the city. Some contain excavated portions of the Roman city of Barcino, whilst others date back to medieval times.

Good to know: The museum is open daily except for Mondays. Audio guides are included with your ticket, which includes admission to all MUHBA sites in the city. You can find more info on their (rather confusing) website . Or simply walk over there and likely, you’ll be able to just get a ticket on the spot. Despite its central location, many people seem to just pass by here, so it’s usually not too busy.

TIP: Even if you are not interested in visiting the museum, be sure to come and see the impressive medieval architecture of Plaça del Rei .

24. Arco de Triunfo & Ciutadella Park

Built in 1888 as the gateway to the Universal Exhibition, the Arco de Triunfo is located at the Passeig Lluís Companys promenade.

It is one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks, with a classic shape and beautiful decorative finishes. At the top, you can see the coat of arms of the city, under which are the shields of the 49 Spanish provinces.

The Passeig Lluís Companys leads to Ciutadella Park , probably Barcelona’s most idyllic spot. It’s a lovely place for a picnic, with palm trees, a fountain designed by Gaudi, and a pretty rowing lake.

There are also numerous attractions on the grounds, including zoology and geology museums, honorary statues, and the Barcelona Zoo . The Parliament of Catalonia and a few other interesting landmarks are located here as well. It’s a really large park with lots to see!

TIP: Be sure to climb to the top of the Cascada del Parc de la Ciutadella fountain for nice views of the park. It’s especially nice late in the afternoon, around sunset.

25. Plaça d’Espanya & Views from Arenas de Barcelona

Plaça d’Espanya is a large square close to the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. It’s somewhat of an eclectic mix of sculptures, monuments, and busy traffic with several major avenues coming together here. Just a few minutes walk to the south, you’ll find the earlier-mentioned Magic Fountain of Montjuïc.

On the northern side of Placa d’Espanya, you’ll find Las Arenas de Barcelona . This oval-shaped commercial shopping center was originally a bullfighting arena but was reconstructed in 2011.

There are countless shops here and its top floor is filled with restaurants that go all the way around the perimeter, and there are also cinemas (with all the movies in Spanish, however).

But the main reason to mention a shopping center in this Barcelona sightseeing guide is because of the awesome 360° city views from the large circular platform at the very top of Arenas de Barcelona. And also because it’s so close to the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc which you’ll likely want to visit anyway. And if you’re already in the area, it’s just a small effort to check out those views.

We visited here around sunset, before heading to the fountain for the evening show, and the views were really nice. Well worth a small detour.

TIP: There is a glass elevator to the rooftop, but there is a small charge to use it. Unless you specifically want to enjoy views on your way up, then you can also just take the stairs or the escalator, which are free!

26. Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar

The beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is a 14th-century Gothic Church. Together with La Sagrada Familia and Barcelona Cathedral, this is one of the nicest churches to see in the city.

It is located in the El Born neighborhood, a maze of medieval streets lined with trendy boutiques and cafes. Taking 55 years to build – partially paid for and constructed by the parishioners themselves – it is famous as being an example of pure Catalan Gothic architecture. This is rare, as most churches and cathedrals have a mixture of different styles.

TIP: You can see the best of the church in 20 minutes or so. But if you have more time then I recommend taking the guided tour, which includes a visit to the rooftop. The views of the skyline of the Old City are quite beautiful.

Good to know: The Basilica is open daily, in the morning and in the evening (usually closed between 1 and 5 PM).

27. Santa Caterina Market

Mercat de Santa Caterina is a covered food market located close to the Picasso Museum. It is easily spotted because of its brightly colored roof. If you want to visit a few local markets in Barcelona, this is a good option.

Clean, well-organized, and modern, it tends to be far quieter than the famous Mercado de La Boqueria, so it’s easier to sample the wares at all the different stalls and try some local specialties. It also has better prices and it is easier to get a seat if you decide to stop for lunch at one of the restaurants or bars.

The site now occupied by the market was originally home to the convent of Santa Caterina, of the Dominican Order or Order of Preachers. Remains of the cloister are still visible in the basement and can be seen with a ticket to the Barcelona History Museum.

Good to know: Santa Caterina market is open daily except on Sundays, from 7.30 AM to 8 PM. However, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays it closes at 3.30 PM already.

28. Day trip to Montserrat Monastery

No list of the best things to do in Barcelona would be complete without mentioning the most popular day trip near the city – a visit to the Abbey of Montserrat .

The mountain range of Montserrat is located around 50km northwest of Barcelona. Its main attraction is the Benedictine Monastery Santa Maria de Montserrat, one of Catalonia’s most important religious sites.

You can’t actually go inside the monastery, but you can visit the grounds, the church, and see the statue of the Black Madonna, Catalonia’s patron saint. You can also hear daily performances from the world-famous Montserrat boys’ choir. In addition, there are some hiking trails and you can enjoy the incredible views of the surrounding landscape.

Barcelona Neighborhoods

Barcelona has several distinct neighborhoods that illustrate its rich history and experimental, artistic reputation. Consider signing up for a guided tour if you want to see several of the city's popular neighborhoods from the perspective of a local.

Barri Gotic

Accessible via Jaume 1 Metro stop.

A first stop for many travelers is the Barri Gòtic , or Gothic Quarter, located near the city center. The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of the city, featuring narrow, compact roads lined with architecture leftover from the Roman Empire and Middle Ages. The neighborhood is also one of the most lively neighborhoods in Barcelona due to its large concentration of amenities. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs to be found here. Make sure to stop by one of its many picturesque plazas, including Plaça Reial, a plaza known for its party atmosphere, and the smaller and much quainter Plaça Sant Felip Neri, which was bombed by Spanish dictator Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War. You will also find the Barcelona Cathedral in this neighborhood. 

Las Ramblas

Accessible via Liceu and Drassanes Metro stops.

This pedestrian thoroughfare, La Rambla, is so popular and so highly frequented, it's often mistaken as a neighborhood (Las Ramblas) than a single attraction. Composed of five sections, La Rambla runs parallel to the Barri Gòtic on its western side, and is one of Barcelona's most popular and crowded landmarks. La Rambla connects the large public square Plaça Catalunya and the Barcelona waterfront. In between, a large tree-lined pedestrian walkway features street acts, newsstands, alfresco cafes, Boqueria Market , plenty of restaurants, bars and shopping options.

Accessible via Liceu Metro stop.

Bordering Las Ramblas to the west, El Raval is a mix of cultures – about 20 languages are spoken here. The neighborhood used to largely be considered seedy until the opening of numerous art museums and cultural institutions breathed new life into the neighborhood. The neighborhood features its own collection of old and new restaurants and shopping options. It's in this neighborhood you can find the Boqueria Market . While this neighborhood does have its fair share of bars, which are known to pour out into the street when the weather's right, it's less of a party hardy space in comparison to that found in Las Ramblas or Barri Gotic . 

Barceloneta

Accessible via Barceloneta

Situated just a stone's throw away from Barcelona's marina and beaches, including Barceloneta Beach , is Barceloneta. Here you'll find plenty of waterfront cafes, restaurants and bars as well as some hotels, including the hard-to-miss, sail-shaped W Hotel found on the southernmost point of the neighborhood.

North of  Barri Gòtic is the upscale Eixample district, filled with wide avenues, large blocks and buildings that all conform to a grid pattern. Eixample has a more contemporary feel than the neighborhoods to the south, but we still recommend the sightseeing in this part of town. One of the key attractions in the district – and in all of Barcelona – is Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia, the Expiatory Church of the Holy Family. Known simply as La Sagrada Familia , the massive Antoni Gaudí-designed church is considered one of the most iconic structures in all Spain. Eixample is also home to Gaudí's lesser known Casa Milà and Casa Batlló , two buildings designed or restored by Gaudí in his unique art nouveau style.

Accessible via Lesseps Metro stop.

Just west of Eixample is the Gracia District, which contains the famous Park Güell , an expansive park designed by Gaudí (yes, he's everywhere in Barcelona). Be sure to relax and enjoy the city views from the park, a collection of colorful mosaics, benches and gardens.

Barcelona is a major tourism hotspot and pickpockets know it. Be mindful of your surroundings especially while touring Barcelona's major attractions. The city sees a moderate rate of conventional crime and principal tourist areas and metros are often the most targeted spots. Men should keep their wallets in their front pockets and carry backpacks in front when traveling on the metro and women should make sure their purses are zipped or secured as best as possible.

Here’s what you need to know about Spain’s newest Hyatt property!

The Grand Hyatt Barcelona has 465 guest rooms , including 49 suites and 1 penthouse suite. Guests looking to be in the center of Barcelona are in luck: the hotel is a few minutes away from historical landmarks, dining and shopping, and, for football fans, Camp Nou, where FC Barcelona plays.

Amenities include 2 dining outlets — including a rooftop restaurant — a spa, a pool, 22 meeting rooms over 35,000 square feet, and a grand event space.
