Where To Get Larvitar, Pupitar & Tyranitar in Pokémon HGSS

Mt. Silver Cave Entrance in HeartGold

Wild Larvitar only appear in Mt. Silver’s cave and the Mountain Area of the Safari Zone.

That means you’ll need to wait until you’ve healed the sickly Ampharos in Olivine Lighthouse to add one to your team – or perhaps longer if you get unlucky with your initial Safari Zone areas.

Once you’ve got a Larvitar, they evolve into Pupitar starting at level 30. Then, when your Pupitar reaches level 55, it will become the mighty Tyranitar.

We’ll go into more detail on the exact catching locations and recommended movesets below.

Catching Your Larvitar

The best place to catch a Larvitar will depend on how far through the game you are.

The easiest location is Mt. Silver’s cave, but you’ll need all 16 gym badges to gain access.

If you want a Larvitar on your team before that point, the Safari Zone is your only option. Depending on which starting areas you’re randomly allocated, this approach becomes available from your 5th badge onward.

Location 1: The Safari Zone’s Mountain Area

After healing the sick Ampharos in Olivine Lighthouse, you’ll get a call from Baoba informing you the Johto Safari Zone is open for business.

This is your first opportunity to catch a Larvitar. Head to the Safari Zone, west of Cianwood City, to get started.

First, you’ll need to check to see if your Safari Zone came with a Mountain Area. There are 10 possible starting configurations, and only half include the Mountain Area. Which set you get is completely random.

The Mountain Area is the one pictured below.

The Mountain Area of Johto's Safari Zone / Pokémon HGSS

If you started with the Mountain Area, great news!

Larvitar appear in the grass here as 10% of the wild encounters, although only in the morning or day time.

If you add 5 peak blocks, they’ll appear at higher levels and at all times of the day.

Catching Pokémon in the Safari Zone can be tough. Remember, throwing mud makes the wild Pokémon easier to catch, but more likely to flee. Bait makes them less likely to flee, but harder to catch.

If you didn’t start with a Mountain Area, you’ll need to complete both of Baoba’s challenges to unlock the Area Customizer. The second challenge is offered as a phone call three in-game hours after completing the first.

Once you’ve completed both, use the Area Customizer to add the Mountain Area and away you go.

Location 2: Mt. Silver’s Cave

If you’ve already beaten all 16 gyms, catching a Larvitar in Mt. Silver’s cave will be much simpler.

Start by flying to Victory Road.

Enter the building and take the left path. The guard will only allow you through if you’ve collected every badge.

You’ll emerge on the other side on Route 28.

Walk west for a short while until you reach the point pictured below.

The beginning of Route 28 / Pokémon HGSS

See those steps in the bottom-right of the picture above?

Climb them and carry on further west until you reach another set of steps.

The second set of steps on Route 28 / Pokémon HGSS

Climb these and walk a short distance north.

Before long, you should reach a Pokémon Center.

The Pokémon Center on Route 28 / Pokémon HGSS

You’ll find the entrance to Mt. Silver’s cave just a little to the left of the Pokémon Center.

Once inside, Larvitar will appear as 5% of the wild encounters throughout the cave.

Wild Larvitar here are only level 15-20, so it may be a good idea to bring a similar-level Pokémon to weaken them easily.

The interior of Mt. Silver's cave / Pokémon HGSS

If you want to skip an evolution stage, wild Pupitar appear in a single specific room not far from the cave’s entrance. They will be at level 45 in HeartGold, and level 30 in SoulSilver.

To reach the room, Surf on the water immediately to your left when you enter Mt. Silver’s cave.

Climb the waterfall and you should see a cave entrance to your right. Pupitar make up 5% of the wild encounters in that small room.

Evolving Your Larvitar

Larvitar’s evolution methods don’t require any special items or unique approaches, just regular training.

Larvitar begin evolving into Pupitar at level 30.

Pupitar then begin evolving into Tyranitar at level 55.

Larvitar evolving into Pupitar / Pokémon HGSS

The Larvitar evolution line are HeartGold and SoulSilver’s pseudo-legendary Pokémon.

That means they have three evolution stages that happen at relatively high levels and end up with incredibly high stats in their final form.

As such, Larvitar and Pupitar may not be the strongest Pokémon around, but once they become Tyranitar, you have one of the strongest non-legendary Pokémon in the game at your disposal.

A Tyranitar after some training / Pokémon HGSS

Tyranitar’s stats are excellently balanced.

Their monstrous Attack stat makes them devastating physical attackers, while their still-respectable Special Attack gives them a truly versatile mixed attacking potential. This is complemented by a wide-ranging offensive movepool.

Their formidable bulk makes them even more dangerous.

Their HP, Defense, and Special Defense stats are naturally high – with the Sandstorm caused by their Sand Stream ability further raising their Special Defense by 50%.

The one area Tyranitar lacks in is Speed.

However, this is more than negated by their other strengths.

Tyranitar can play purely offensive, mixed, or supporting roles on your team. They can set up powerful hazards in the form of Stealth Rocks, buff themselves with Dragon Dance, and automatically set up Sandstorm to support weather-based team synergy.

Hello, this is the Safari Zone Guide! I also have a guide about gyms, the elite four and the bird quest here. And for basically any other information, here is the Survival Guide Information FAQ! This guide is definitely a work in progress. If you have any information you'd like to contribute, please leave a comment below or message me on discord! ------------------------- Safari Zone Basics ------------------------- .SpoilerTarget"> Spoiler The Safari Zone is a fun place to go try to catch rare and powerful pokemon! This is the only place you can catch Hidden Ability pokemon in the wild! It is located on the story server, and all you have to do is follow the path past the pokemon center and out of /spawn. To start, you must talk to the Entrance Safari Ranger (157, 17) and pay an entry fee of 5000 coins. If Ranger Swarma (178,18) is standing behind the Entrance Ranger, it is highly recommend that you talk to them. Please see the Swarm section for more details! Once you've paid, you'll receive 30 Safari Balls. These do NOT go into your inventory, instead they will appear in the menu when you encounter pokemon. To find pokemon, simply find a patch of grass and run around it until a pokemon appears. (Or, find a lake and swim around in it). You can also jump in the grass, which definitely helps conserve food, but encounters might show up less often. I'm not really sure. Each patch of grass has a different set of pokemon found in them, so see the Map section for all the grass patches and their contents. In addition, the time of day also affects what pokemon appear. So, each patch of grass also has a different encounter-table for Day and Night (based on the position of Minecraft's Sun and Moon). When you encounter a pokemon you can throw a pokeball at it and hope to catch it! Or, if you aren't interested in the pokemon, you can simply run away. Keep in mind, that after every other action, the pokemon has a chance to flee! Generally, if you encounter a pokemon you want, you will just throw pokeballs at it until either it catches or the pokemon decides to run. It's all up to luck! You can also move closer, which makes more likely that a pokeball will succeed, but also makes it more likely for the pokemon to run away! I'm not sure if it's worth it! You can also throw pokeblocks, which presumably makes pokemon less likely to run, but also makes it less likely for a pokeball to succeed. You also have to actually have pokeblocks in your inventory to do this. I'm not sure if this is worth it either. You can stay in the Safari Zone for as long as you want! But once you have used the last of your 30 Safari Balls, your run will end , you will be brought back to the Entrance Ranger, and you will have to pay another 5000 coins to participate again. Your run will also end if you ever leave the Safari Zone, whether it be from the server's daily reboot, your game crashing, or you simply being tired and walking out. ----------- Swarms ----------- .SpoilerTarget"> Spoiler About every two hours , a swarm event will be announced in the story server. Regular servers will not receive this notification. While a swarm event is active, Ranger Swarma (178,18) can be found standing behind the Entrance Ranger. This NPC vanishes whenever a swarm is inactive. Ranger Swarma is responsible for activating the swarm and giving you the Swarm Challenge. Swarm is a period of time in which a certain species of pokemon becomes more common in the safari zone. You won't find out which species of pokemon it is until a swarm actually starts. The exact details of timing is still uncertain, but it seems that swarms last about an hour and there is about 1.5 hours until the next swarm starts. These swarm pokemon won't appear in every grass patch, so you'll have to search around and hope you find a patch that actually has the swarm in it! Keep in mind, that just because a swarm pokemon is more common, they may still be rare and have low encounter rates. Swarm pokemon will NOT appear if you have not talked to Ranger Swarma. Swarm pokemon will also NOT appear if you have turned in the current swarm challenge. With each swarm, the first right click on Swarma will have them explain what a swarm is. You can click SKIP in your chat log in order to skip this dialogue, since it is the same each time. It is at this point that swarm pokemon will start appearing for you. However, it is very important for you to right click AGAIN. The second right click on Swarma will have them say which species of pokemon is swarming! Then Swarma will offer you a challenge to catch either one, two or three of that pokemon, depending on its rarity! The game will NOT keep track of how many you've caught until after you've talked to Swarma the second time. Once you've caught enough of the swarm pokemon, return to Swarma and right click to receive your reward! These are definitely worth doing if you're heading into the safari zone, as they will end up refunding your admission fee if completed! Catch 3: 5000 coins , 10 tokens, 5000 trainer exp Catch 2: 7500 coins , 15 tokens, 7500 trainer exp Catch 1: 15000 coins , 20 tokens, 15000 trainer exp Just keep in mind, after you turn in the quest, swarm pokemon will STOP showing up! So depending on the pokemon, maybe you'd rather have more time to try to find the swarming instead of getting the rewards right away. Just also keep in mind that you won't be able to get the rewards if the swarm ends, since Swarma will also disappear. Unfortunately, there's no indicator of when the swarm is about to end. Good luck! -------------------------------------- Map and Patch Encounters -------------------------------------- NNN117 did all the work and worked super super hard so good work and thank you so so so so much!!!!! More thank yous and the old somewhat outdated guide in the next post.
somewhat old and outdated information: .SpoilerTarget"> Spoiler -------------------------------------- Map and Patch Encounters -------------------------------------- As you can see, there is a Main Area and a Secret Area. There is large hole in the fence that leads between the two areas. I'm going to be splitting the grass patches (and lakes) between the two sections. The two most popular safari zone pokemon have been marked on the map, but everything will be listed below. Other popular and notable pokemon have been bolded. Keep in mind, (with exception of Ditto and Larvitar), everything is based on information confirmed after September 12th (the most recent safari zone update). Also "tbd" stands for "to be determined." How to Catch Pokémon in Safari Zone

Last Updated: May 21, 2023 References

In the Pokémon series of games, Safari Zones are special unique areas in each game where rare Pokémon that don't appear anywhere else in the game can be caught. Safari Zones always operate with different rules than the rest of the game world - instead of battling Pokémon in the wild like you normally would, you'll need to carefully use baits and deterrents to get Pokémon to let down their guards so you can catch them. This can be quite challenging, so knowing the ins and outs of Safari Zone mechanics in each game is vital for success.

Navigating the Safari Zone

Fighting and capturing pokémon.

Step 1 Be aware of the modified combat mechanics for the Safari Zone.

  • Note that the "run away" option functions as normal, so we won't be discussing it.

Step 2 Use bait to make a Pokémon less likely to run.

  • However, using bait will also make the Pokémon more difficult to catch in a safari ball. Thus, striking a balance here can be difficult — the longer you get the Pokémon to stick around for, the harder it will be to actually capture it.

Step 3 Use rocks to make a Pokémon easier to catch.

  • However, there's an important downside: using rocks will also make the Pokémon more likely to run away. In fact, after taking more than a few rocks, a Pokémon is virtually guaranteed to run away — some will exit the battle sooner. Thus, once again, using rocks means striking a delicate balance as you try to capture your Pokémon.

Step 4 Use safari balls to attempt to capture Pokémon.

  • Note that you only have a limited supply of safari balls (depending on the game, usually 30), so save them for Pokémon you want to catch. It's generally the best use of your time to use your safari balls for Pokémon that are only found in the safari zone.

Step 5 In general, go for capture attempts after one or two rock throws.

  • Note that safari balls are weak compared to the pokéballs you can use in the rest of the game. In addition to this, especially rare Safari Zone Pokémon are extra-difficult to catch. [2] X Research source This can lead to some very frustrating situations — for instance, it can easily take 20 or more tries to catch an exceptionally rare Pokémon like Clefairy.

General Tips

Step 1 Use your limited steps carefully.

  • Bulbapedia, an online user-supported Pokémon encyclopedia, has extensive information about each game's Safari Zone, including maps and guides covering where to look for the Pokémon in each zone. See the Bulbapedia Safari Zone article to get started. [3] X Research source
  • Note that there is no step limit in the Safari Zone in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. [4] X Research source

Step 2 Be prepared to pay the entrance fee.

  • Across all of the games in the series, the entrance fee has stayed the same: 500 P . This includes the Great Marsh in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, which is not technically a Safari Zone but behaves very similarly.
  • One smart strategy is to save your game before you enter the Safari Zone. This way, if you don't catch any Pokémon you want, you can re-load to avoid paying the entrance fee again.

Step 3 Consider exploring the math of capture mechanics.

  • As an example of the sort of equation used in the games to determine whether certain Pokémon are captured, consider the equation from the Generation games (Gold and Silver): a = max((3 × HP max - 2 × HP current ) × rate modified / (3 × HP max ), 1) + bonus status where HP max is the Pokémon's maximum HP, HP current is the Pokémon's current HP, rate modified is the catch rate of the Pokémon modified by the ball used (every Pokémon and every ball modifies this in a certain way, and bonus status is the modifier for any status condition (sleep and freeze are 10, all others are 0). [5] X Research source When you throw a ball, a random number between 0 and 255 is generated. If this number is less than or equal to a, the Pokémon is caught.

Catching Pokémon in the Kanto Safari Zone

In the following sections, we'll highlight the rare Pokémon in each Safari zone and give specific advice where applicable. To keep these tables to a reasonable size, we've included only the rarest Pokémon in each area — for exhaustive information, consult the Safari Zone guides at Serebii.net and Bulbapedia.

Catching Pokémon in the Hoenn Safari Zone

Note that the Generation 4 Hoenn Safari Zone (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) won't be covered here as the player is allowed to engage in ordinary battles in this zone.

Catching Pokémon in the Sinnoh Great Marsh

Though Sinnoh's Pokémon preserve has a different name, it functions virtually identically to Safari Zones in other regions.

Catching Pokémon in the Johto Safari Zone

Note that the Safari Zone is not available in Generation 2 (Gold/Silver) but is available in the Generation IV games that visit Johto (HeartGold/SoulSilver). Note also that in this Safari Zone the player can arrange the six different areas in any arrangement desired. Finally, many of the areas in the Johto Safari Zones have Pokémon appearance rates that are not yet known — only data for the known areas has been included. See Bulbapedia for more information. Expert Q&A

  • Once again, the data in the tables above only deals with the most noteworthy Pokémon in each area. In fact, many more Pokémon appear in each Safari Zone. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 2
  • Remember — you have a limited number of steps inside the Safari Zone, not a limited amount of time. Thus, you can take as long as you like if you control your movement carefully. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 3

On Pokemon Soul Silver, I hear you can catch Larvitar in the Safari Zone. How do you find one there? Thanks.

You can find it in the mountain area in the Safari Zone. It will only show up in the morning and afternoon but it is rare to find. You can also find it in the poke walker in the Rugged Road.

Isn't it also in Mt. Silver? Or did they change Pokemon locations in the new generation? I know it was in Mt. Silver in the original version of the game...

how to catch larvitar safari zone

Larvitar is a small, green reptilian Pokémon with rocky skin. It has a blunt spike on top of its head, a short, rounded snout, and triangular, black markings below and on the upper corners of its red eyes. Red scales cover its diamond-shaped belly, and there are several small diamond-shaped holes in its body. Its short arms lack fingers, while its feet have a single toenail each. It has a tail with a conical center surrounded by a ring of plate-like scales, causing it to resemble a tunnel-boring machine.

Larvitar is born deep underground, far from its parent. It emerges to the surface and grows by consuming soil, and it will enter its pupal stage upon eating an entire mountain's worth of earth. This pupal stage is an evolution called Pupitar . Larvitar usually lives in mountains , hills, and caves. It adapts poorly to bright lights.

Larvitar evolves into Pupitar , which evolves into Tyranitar .

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data .)

Can somebody please help me catch larvitar in the safari zone?

Pokemon soulsilver version, pokemon heartgold version (ds).

  • I have tried many times, using mud and bait but neither seems to work. Can you tell me exactly how you caught larvitar? Shinyluxray118 - 14 years ago - report
  • Yes luck is a major factor, but everytime i throw a safari ball it doesn't even shake once. Shinyluxray118 - 14 years ago - report
  • If anybody has any tips please tell me. Shinyluxray118 - 14 years ago - report

Accepted Answer

  • NEVER THROW MUD ON THE FIRST TURN First off throw a ball and pray to god that it does not run or that you catch it. Second throw a bait to make it stay longer. Try catching it. (I know bait decreases catch rate but hey you never know) Now throw a mud ball at it and anger it. Catch rate becomes normal. Either throw a ball or mud the next turn and pray that it does not run. Throw mud at it if you threw ball the last turn. Keep throwing Safari Balls. It works for me. Death_Ragnell - 14 years ago - report 7   6

  • Catching Pokemon in the Safari Zone is all about persistence. That being said, since luck is a major factor, it's best to avoid trying to making it easier to catch with mud or bait. Instead, simply go straight for the capture and keep throwing Poke Balls at it. It'll take a while, but Larvitar is difficult to catch for a reason. You'll get it eventually. Good luck! Aeres116699 (Expert) - 14 years ago - report 3   2
  • Mud - Increases both the chance you will catch the Pokemon and the chance it will run. Bait - Decreases both the chance you will catch the Pokemon and the chance it will run. A Safari Ball is as effective as a Great Ball (1.5x as effective as a Pokeball). Larvitar's Base Catch Rate is 45 out of 255, same as Smeargle, Stantler, and Gyarados (among others). Just chuck Balls and only face Larvitar (run from everything else). Kraleck (Expert) - 14 years ago - report 5   4

  17. Do I need to finish Soulsilver to get Larvitar?

Thard_Verad is correct, Larvitar is obtainable from the Safari Zone. I think the answer here got confused with the Peak blocks needed to force a level 42 Larvitar to spawn which doesn't care about time of day to spawn. Otherwise it's Mountain by default at level 17 with a 10% chance to spawn in Morning or Day. It will not spawn at Night.
