What transport concessions are available?

Can i get a free bus pass, can i get a discount on train travel, can i get a london freedom pass, what if i have difficulty using public transport, what if i'm unable to use public transport, more travel concessions questions.

There are several national public transport concessions available to older and disabled people. Some entitle you to discounts on your fares, while others allow you to travel for free.

Eligibility for these concessions depends on whether you have a disability or your age.

Depending on your age and your circumstances, you might be able to get one of the following free bus passes, which allow you to travel free on local buses:

  • an older person's bus pass
  • a disabled person's bus pass

What age do I have to be to get an older person's bus pass?

Find your local council and apply for a disabled person's bus pass on GOV.UK

Are there any other discounts if I'm an older person or I'm disabled?

It's a good idea to contact individual transport operators to see if they offer discounts.

For instance, National Express offers Coachcards. These are discount cards for older or disabled customers. You buy them for a set fee of £15.00 and they get you a third off the cost of your travel across the year.

Find out more and order a Coachcard on the National Express website

Depending on your age and circumstances, you might be entitled to one of the below railcards:

If you're disabled, you can't use public transport, or you don't have access to a car, you might also be able to use a community transport scheme – such as a social car, dial-a-ride, or taxicard scheme.

Shopmobility schemes help people shop in town centres by lending out wheelchairs and scooters. Some local councils also offer concessions on local public transport.

To find out what's available in your area, you can contact your local council or your local Age UK.

Wondering how you can save money if you’re over 60? Look no further we’ve put together a guide to all of the best over 60s discounts in the UK.

Update 23/04/2024, 14:32

We’ve added even more deals just for over 60s such as on 50% off season tickets for your favourite football team and more!

If you or someone you know who is in their 60s then you may be wondering what there is to do to help with the current cost of living crisis. Pension payments may be enough to get by but there are always ways to cut back a range of expenses from groceries to prescription glasses.

In this article, we’ve gathered all of the best over 60s discounts that are currently available in the UK as of April 2024. From supermarkets and health stores to travel and entertainment, we’ve got you covered.

How to get over 60s discounts?

Supermarkets, transportation and travel, senior railcard, free bus pass, 60+ oyster card, health and lifestyle, boots over 60s rewards, specsavers discount, b&q diamond card discount, warm home discount, entertainment, the national trust, all your questions about over 60s discounts answered.

The majority of the time over 60s discounts are pretty simple to redeem. All you have to do is present your ID (passport or driver’s licence) in the shop when you pay. Or you may need to sign up for special senior cards or schemes online.

Supermarket

One of the best supermarket discounts for seniors is definitely Iceland . The freezer-food chain offers 10% off for over 60s on Tuesdays. This discount is also available at Iceland’s sister store, The Food Warehouse. The only condition to get the discount is that you must be signed up for the Iceland Bonus Card which is free to do. Simply head to the shop and get your groceries, then when paying show your Bonus Card and ID. The discount is only redeemable in-store.

Co-op also has a similar scheme. It runs a Diamond Day Discount every Tuesday where over 60s with a membership card can get 10% off. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that this is only available at the Midcounties Co-operative stores.

Asda was offering a £1 offer for soup and bread in their cafes for the winter months but this just ended in March. The supermarket has been known to offer cheap food and drinks to over 60s so it’s best to keep your eye out.

Tesco may not offer many discounts in store for seniors but they do have a great initiative with the Clubcard scheme to help you save money on your Senior Railcard . Every £1.50 you earn in Clubcard vouchers can be turned into £3.00 towards your Railcard.

Sainsbury’s also doesn’t have a specific discount for over 60s. But like many other supermarkets, they have some ways to help you save some money during this cost of living crisis. For example, Sainsbury’s ‘ Feed Your Family for a Fiver ‘ recipe ideas can help you put together a nice meal for less.

Likewise, Morrisons and Lidl also don’t have an over 60s discount. Both do offer ‘Wonky Veg’ boxes to help with the rising food prices. Simply put, they are boxes of fruit and veg that may look a little unconventional but are perfectly fine to eat.

Bus

One of the areas of your spending that sees the best discounts and offers when you’re over 60 years old is definitely travel. From free bus passes to discounts on rail fares there are plenty of seniors schemes to make the most of.

The Senior Railcard gives over 60s a third off of travel on trains in the UK. It costs just £30 for 1 year or £70 for 3 years meaning not only do you save on the normal train prices but you get a railcard for a cheaper price than usual too.

Also, alongside saving on train tickets the Senior Railcard gives you plenty of other exclusive offers and rewards such as £50 to spend on Virgin Wines and £50 off Haven Holidays to name just a few.

Seniors in the UK are also entitled to a free bus pass . In England and Wales , people are only entitled to claim one once they have retired, in Northern Ireland and Scotland all over 60s get a free bus pass. Simply apply for yours on the government website .

If you live in London then not only do you get free travel on buses, but also on all Transport for London services with the 60+ Oyster Card .

Eye test

There are plenty of discounts for seniors when it comes to healthcare and also energy bills, here are some of the most popular:

Boots offers an Over 60s Rewards scheme which is free to sign up for. You can earn 8 points for every £1 that you spend on Boots brands such as Liz Earl and Joules as well as selected other products. There are also plenty of other exclusive offers including a free Hearing Health Check at Boots and 10% off at Boots Opticians .

If you’re looking for a new pair of glasses, over 60s get 20% off at Specsavers . There are a few terms and conditions though, for example, the glasses must be over £70. You can also make the most of a free NHS-funded eye test making both the test and glasses a lot cheaper for seniors.

B&Q offer a special scheme just for over 60s called the Diamond Card Discount . Every Wednesday you get 10% discount on a wide range of gardening and Christmas products, valid only in-store.

With energy bills rising we’re all looking for ways to save money on heating our homes. The Warm Home Discount is an initiative offered by the UK government giving a £150 discount on electricity bills . It’s specifically for low-income pensioners struggling with the costs of energy bills in the winter months. Read our comprehensive guide to the Warm Home Discount for all you need to know.

Cinema

When you’ve retired you probably have plenty of free time on your hands, and what better use of it than going to the cinema or for a day out? Luckily plenty of places offer hefty discounts for over 60s, here are some of the best:

Fancy a cheap trip to the cinema? Cineworld has got over 60s covered with their CineSeniors £4.50 tickets which even include free hot drinks and biscuits ! Each Wednesday seniors can make their way to their local Cineworld and watch a special screening just for over 60-year-olds. Don’t worry the films that are screened include new releases such as Priscilla and Napoleon.

The National Trust also offers 25% off membership for people over 60s. This means it costs £68.40 rather than £91.20 a year for an Individual and £113.40 instead of £151.20 a year for a Joint membership for two people sharing the same address. However, there are some conditions to get this offer. You must already have been a member for three years or more and be an existing member.

The Royal Shakespeare Company has a great scheme for over 65s in which they are offered a 20% discount on seats for selected shows on evening performances on Mondays and Tuesdays as well as all midweek matinees.

All over 60s can make the most of £20 off £66 and £56 tickets at the National Theatre’s midweek matinee shows in their Lyttelton and Olivier theatres. As well as these well-known theatre production companies, there are also various discounts to be found locally such as at the Theatre Royal Glasgow and the Birmingham Hippodrome .

If you’re an avid football fan and usually buy a season ticket, the good news is there are usually senior discounts offered. For example, Chelsea FC offers over 50% off on senior season tickets. Manchester United also offers over 65s a 50% discount on season tickets and Premier League home games. The list goes on, so it’s best to check with your local football team whether you can be saving a fair amount on your tickets.

No, once you are 60 you don’t automatically get free dental treatment on the NHS. There are certain conditions that may give you free treatment such as when you are benefits for a low income.

Yes, over 60s can get a free NHS eye test.

No, over 60s aren’t entitled to free glasses. You may be eligible for some vouchers towards glasses through the NHS is you have a low income.

Simply head to the government’s website page and apply for your over 60s buss pass for free.

The best freebie when you’re over 60 is a free bus pass alongside free prescriptions and eye tests.

How to save money when you’re 60-plus

Claim deals in restaurants and pubs, in cinemas and theatres and when travelling by train or coach

Eating out and entertainment

The soaring cost of living makes it more important than ever to ensure your money stretches as far as possible.

Fortunately, if you are 60-plus, you can benefit from a wide range of deals and discounts and save plenty of cash.

Some pubs, restaurants, cinemas and theatres offer discounts to people over 60, particularly during weekdays when people are at work.

Check with your local pub, as they often offer discounted lunches on certain days of the week. Some Greene King pubs offer seniors loyalty schemes, providing a 50% discount off every fourth meal, and seniors menus every day, with one or perhaps two courses for £4.49.

The Odeon cinema chain offers reduced tickets for over-60s through its Silver Cinema initiative, with tickets from £3.50, and tea, coffee and biscuits served before the film.

Similarly, Empire’s Seniors scheme for over-60s offers tickets for £3.75 every Wednesday, with tea or coffee again included.

Turning to theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company offers discounted tickets to the over-65s on selected performances, with a 20% discount available on all seats for Monday and Tuesday evening performances and all midweek matinees.

The over-60s can save on midweek matinees at London’s National Theatre, with £66 seats reduced to £46 and £56 seats reduced to £36 in its two biggest venues.

Gardens, museums and attractions

The National Trust’s senior membership offers over-60s who have been a member of the organisation for at least five out of the last 10 years a 25% discount off adult rates. It is £57.60 for individual senior membership, or £95.40 for joint senior membership.

English Heritage offers reduced-price senior membership for people over 65, at £59 a year compared with £66 (or £92 a year for joint membership if you are both over 65). This gives you access to more than 400 historic sites, free entry for up to six children, and free or reduced entry to events.

You can buy a discounted lifetime membership for the Royal Horticultural Society if you are over 60. It’s certainly not cheap but the discount is substantial: £935 compared with £1,495.

Other sites that offer discounts to the over-60s include Longleat safari park, house and gardens and Beamish open air museum.

The National Trust-owned Ickworth House and gardens in Suffolk.

Energy and bills

Most people born before 25 September 1956 are entitled to a winter fuel payment of between £250 and £600 to help pay their heating bills. The amount includes a one-off “pensioner cost of living payment” this winter of between £150 and £300. You should receive this automatically by 13 January 2023 if you get the state pension, but if you don’t, you may need to make a claim.

A blue flame emits from a gas cooker.

If you receive certain benefits such as pension credit, you can also claim the cold weather payment . This is worth £25 for every seven-day period of “very cold weather” between 1 November and 31 March. The money should be paid into your bank account automatically but if you don’t receive it, contact your pension centre or jobcentre to claim.

Check whether you are entitled to a free gas safety check from your energy supplier or local authority if you are over 60. Remember that if you are struggling to pay your bills, your provider should do whatever it can to help elderly or vulnerable people. This could include free or discounted home insulation or boiler installation, or an energy grant if you are in debt, for example.

As the cost of food rockets, you will want to do what you can to save on your grocery shop.

The supermarket chain Iceland offers those aged 60-plus a 10% discount in-store every Tuesday, with no minimum spend. You will need to show proof of age to claim your discount.

Many retailers also offer loyalty scheme bonuses for this age group. For example, if you are 60 or over and have a Boots Advantage card, you can earn eight points (compared with four) for every £1 spent on Boots-branded products. You can also receive 20% off glasses at Boots Opticians.

Maltese dog

Meanwhile, Specsavers offers 20% off glasses in its £69 range or above for the over-60s.

You can also get free NHS prescriptions if you are over 60, provided you complete the back of the prescription form, and you may be asked for proof of age.

Home and pets

Rest Less, the digital community for those in their 50s, 60s and beyond, offers a wide range of discounts to its members. These include 50% off a year’s membership with TrustedHousesitters (usually £99 for the basic package), a website that matches homeowners with pet sitters.

The charity Dogs Trust offers half-price membership for the over-60s (£12.50 a year instead of £25). Membership gives you 24-hour access to a phone line for advice from qualified vets, and third-party insurance if your dog causes damage or injury to another person, their property or pets.

If you are on a low income and over 60, you may be able to use charity Age UK’s “handyperson” scheme. This gives you access to free or discounted repairs and other services.

If you have reached state pension age, which is now 66 for both men and women, you are entitled to free off-peak travel on local buses in England. Check the government website to see if you qualify and to apply for an older person’s bus pass. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland you are entitled to a free bus pass when you reach 60.

If you travel by train, you can apply for a senior railcard once you turn 60. This costs £30 for a year or £70 for three years, and entitles you to third off standard or first-class fares.

Abigail Yearley, a spokesperson for the website TopCashback, says: “On top of this, there are some great offers to help save on the railcard itself, as we’re currently offering up to 31% in cashback to new customers of Trainline, meaning a three-year senior railcard would cost you just under £50.”

If you are over 60, not yet eligible for a Freedom Pass and live in London, the 60+ Oyster pass allows free travel on buses, tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and most National Rail services in the capital. Meanwhile, the older person’s Freedom Pass gives you free travel across London and free local bus journeys nationally. You must meet the age criteria, which you can check on the website . The eligibility age is rising in line with the women’s state pension age.

If you travel by coach, you can get a National Express senior coachcard for £15 a year (£12.50 plus £2.50 p&p) to save a third off standard and fully flexible fares.

Tips for Senior Travelers in England

Be advised that in Britain you often have to be a member of an association to get senior discounts. Public-transportation discounts, for example, are available only to holders of British Pension books. However, many attractions do offer discounts for seniors (women 60 or older and men 65 or older). Even if discounts aren't posted, ask if they're available.

If you're older than 60, you're eligible for special 10% discounts on British Airways through its Privileged Traveler program. You also qualify for reduced restrictions on APEX cancellations. Discounts are also granted for BA tours and for intra-Britain air tickets booked in North America. BritRail offers seniors discounted rates on first-class rail passes around Britain.

Don't be shy about asking for discounts, but carry some kind of identification that shows your date of birth. Also, mention you're a senior when you make your reservations. Many hotels offer seniors discounts. In most cities, people older than the age of 60 qualify for reduced admission to theaters, museums, and other attractions, and discounted fares on public transportation.

Members of AARP, 601 E St. NW, Washington, DC 20049 (tel. 888/687-2277; www.aarp.org), get discounts on hotels, airfares, and car rentals. AARP offers members a wide range of benefits, including AARP The Magazine and a monthly newsletter. Anyone older than 50 can join.

Many reliable agencies and organizations target the 50-plus market. Elderhostel (tel. 800/454-5768; www.elderhostel.org) arranges worldwide study programs for those ages 55 and older.

Recommended publications offering travel resources and discounts for seniors include the quarterly magazine Travel 50 & Beyond (www.travel50andbeyond.com) and Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're Over 50 (McGraw-Hill), by Joann Rattner Heilman.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

London Freedom Pass

60+ london oyster photocard, discounts on rail travel.

You could be eligible for one of the following railcards that’ll get you discounts on train services, depending on your age, relationship and whether you’re classed as having a disability:

  • Senior Railcard (60 years and over)

Disabled Persons Railcard

  • Two Together Railcard

Both of these are discount cards. You purchase them each year for a set fee and they get you a third off the cost of your train travel.

Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard is available for anyone aged 60 and over to buy. This costs just £30 (or £70 for three years), so will have effectively paid for itself after only a few train trips.

When using the Senior Railcard, you can expect to make average annual savings of £76, or £5.34 per journey. For example, a train from London to Liverpool goes down from around £68.60 to £45.25, while a train from Doncaster to London goes down from £32.50 to £21.45.

You can apply for one of these through the Senior Railcard website . You’ll need a valid passport or UK driving licence for ID. You can also apply in person at some of the UK’s most staffed railway stations.

Senior railcard

If you meet any of the following criteria, you could be eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard:

  • You receive a disability-related benefit, such as Personal Independence Payment , Attendance Allowance or Severe Disablement Allowance
  • You’re registered as deaf or you use a hearing aid
  • You’re registered as having a visual impairment
  • You have epilepsy

To apply for this railcard or to get more information surrounding eligibility criteria, visit the Disabled Person’s Railcard website .

Senior Railcard For Couples

Though there’s no railcard specifically aimed at older couples, the Two Together Railcard works in the same way for people of all ages. This railcard is to be used by you and a second person - both of you will be named on the railcard. They’re best used by yourself and the person you travel with most - often your partner or spouse.

When using a Two Together Railcard, you get one-third off rail fares when travelling together. It costs just £30 and leads to average savings of £153 per year (or £6.26 per journey).

For example, travelling from London to Edinburgh would typically cost around £145, but this goes down to £95.70 with a Two Together Railcard. Similarly, getting the train from York to London goes down from £88 to £58.

Apply for the Two Together Railcard through the official Railcard website .

Free Bus Pass For Over 60s

You could be eligible for one of the following free bus passes, depending on your age and whether you’re classed as having a disability:

  • An older person’s bus pass
  • A disabled person’s bus pass

Both of these passes will get you free travel on local buses.

It might also be worth getting in touch with individual transport operators to see if they offer any discounts. For example, National Express offer Coachcards to older (60+) or disabled customers. These cost £12.50 a year and save you a third on your travel.

Older person’s bus pass

You’ll become eligible for an older person’s bus pass when you reach the State Pension age.

Apply for your bus pass through the GOV.UK website .

Disabled person’s bus pass

Unlike an older person’s bus pass, there’s no central provider for the disabled person’s bus pass.

To find out if you’re eligible and where to apply, get in touch with your local council . All you need to do is enter your postcode and you’ll be redirected to the relevant part of your local council’s website.

Senior Train Travel Discounts in Europe

senior travel discounts uk

Although most senior travelers associate senior discounts with rail passes, some European countries offer mature travelers discounts on individual tickets. Typically, you will need to purchase some kind of annual membership card to qualify for the senior discount. Requirements vary by country and are subject to change. In some countries, non-European Union seniors are not eligible for discount cards.

If you plan to travel by train on just a few days over a one- or two-month period, you may find that a rail pass will save you money. BritRail and France's SNCF offer senior discounts on certain types of rail passes. Senior discounts also apply to the Eurail Ireland and Eurail Romania Passes.

Do not assume that a rail pass is the cheapest way to go. Depending on the countries you plan to visit, the number of train trips you plan to take, and the senior discount plans available, you may save more by purchasing a senior card and applying its discount to your tickets. It is worth spending some time at your computer to research the best deal.

Terms by Country

Let's take a look at senior train travel discounts by country.

Belgium offers seniors age 65 and older a great senior discount on non-peak train travel . Tickets are just 6.50 Euros each if you travel after 9:01 A.M. on weekdays. You can also get this senior fare on weekends during the school year. Restrictions apply; some "frontier" train stations do not offer the senior fare. This discount is unavailable on August 15, during holiday periods and summer weekends. Proof of age is required.

France gives seniors age 60 and older the opportunity to purchase a Carte Senior+  for 60 Euros. The Carte Senior+ entitles you to discounts of 25 to 50 percent on train travel. You can also change your train ticket for only 5 Euros; the normal change fee is 15 Euros.

Germany offers senior travelers over age 60 a discount on the BahnCard 50 . Seniors pay 255 Euros for the second class BahnCard50, which gives you a 50 percent discount on flexible fare train tickets as well as a 25 percent discount on certain saver fares in the German rail system. Carefully research each leg of your journey to see whether the BahnCard50 is a good option for you. If you are traveling with one or more companions, Germany's Weekend Tickets may be a better bet, depending on your travel dates.

Italy offers the Carta d'Argento ("Silver Card") to senior travelers over age 60. The card costs 30 Euros (free for travelers over 75) and is valid for one year. With the Carta d'Argento, you will save 15 percent on most Italian train tickets and 10 percent on couchette tickets (second-class sleeper berths). You will also be able to participate in the RailEurope system with its 25 percent discount on international travel. You have to show both your ticket and your Carta d'Argento to the conductor. Certain restrictions apply.

Portugal's CP rail system offers seniors age 65 and older discounts on several different types of trains, including regional, interregional and Coimbra Urban trains. The typical discount is 50 percent. Restrictions apply.

Spain's RENFE rail system offers senior travelers 60 and older the Tarjeta Dorada ("Gold Card"). With the Tarjeta Dorada, you will save 25 to 50 percent on train tickets, depending on the type of train, the day of the week you travel and how far in advance you buy your tickets. You can buy your Tarjeta Dorada at a RENFE station for 6 Euros; it will be valid for one year.

The UK's Senior Railcard gives you a one-third discount on a wide variety of standard and first-class tickets. Morning rush hour travel within the London and the South East area does not qualify for the Senior Railcard discount. The Senior Railcard costs £30 and is available to anyone age 60 or over. British train fares are quite high, so it is also worth investigating a BritRail pass if you plan to take several train trips.

Eurostar , which operates the Chunnel trains, no longer advertises a senior fare.

Disclaimer: Some train systems may restrict senior discounts to citizens of European Union communities, even though their websites do not indicate any such restrictions.

Free Stuff For Seniors Over 65 In The UK 2024

Mobility Extra Team

senior travel discounts uk

In the UK, there is a wealth of freebies and discounts available to people over 65 which can provide essential assistance. Unfortunately, recent research has revealed that an alarmingly high number of older adults are neglecting these opportunities. Taking advantage of these can not only promote independence, but also contribute to overall wellness.

Unclaimed savings could be costing them thousands of dollars each year. Here are the best methods for claiming them, strengthening financial independence and wellness in the process.

Free bus travel

If you’re over 65 and live in the UK, then you could potentially qualify for a free bus pass / bus travel. These passes are issued by local councils and can be used on buses throughout England or Wales. This kind of assistance can make a significant difference for older adults by fostering their independence.

The Older Person’s Travel Pass offers free bus travel in England to those over state pensionable age or with disabilities after 9:30am Monday-Friday and all day on weekends and bank holidays, operated by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM). One month prior to your eligibility date, you can apply for an older person’s bus pass online or in person. They will post the pass directly to you. In order to do so, please provide proof of age and residency (such as a passport-sized photo). This, again, fosters independence and wellness among seniors.

One of the most generous freebies available to seniors over 65 in the UK is the senior railcard, which provides fantastic assistance by granting them incredible discounts on train travel across the country. Additionally, seniors over 65 in the UK can access a wealth of free information through libraries and online resources, allowing them to indulge in their interests and stay connected with the world around them, supporting both their independence and wellness.

One of the many perks for seniors over 65 in the UK is the free membership to the National Trust, granting access to countless historical sites, stunning gardens, and beautiful countryside. In addition to the free membership to the National Trust, pensioners can enjoy a range of other complimentary benefits and services tailored specifically for seniors over 65 in the UK. Taking advantage of these can enhance their wellness, assist in their daily lives, and support their independence.

Free gas safety check

If you’re over 65, a free gas safety check from your energy supplier or local authority is available to keep you secure and reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, fires and explosions in your home. This valuable assistance can play a crucial role in your safety and wellness.

A gas safety check can save you money on your bills. A qualified Gas Safe registered engineer will verify that all appliances such as your boiler and gas fire are working correctly, helping to avoid hazardous scenarios like carbon monoxide poisoning and gas leaks. This service is another form of assistance that can foster independence and wellness among seniors.

Free eye tests

In the UK, everyone aged 60 or over can access free prescriptions and NHS eye tests. Depending on your individual situation, you may even qualify for help with dental treatment costs as well. Free NHS dental treatment People who receive the pension guarantee credit can be eligible for free dental treatment too. But you’ll need to have signed up for Pension Credit in order to get it. These benefits are critical to the wellness of seniors.

If you are over 65 and having trouble seeing, it’s wise to get your eyes checked out. You can determine if you qualify for a free test by speaking to an optician or visiting the NHS website. This is an invaluable form of assistance preserving your independence and contributing to your vision wellness.

Free handyperson service

Your local council’s free handyperson service can be a lifesaver. Not only do they provide home energy checks and DWP benefits checks for free, but Thames Water discounts as well. This form of assistance can significantly improve seniors’ wellness and independence by making their lives more comfortable and manageable.Who knows? Maybe they’ll even build you some flat pack furniture or two, or lend a hand in setting up your newly purchased glasses from Specsavers!

Signing up for the service only takes 10 minutes and you can expect a call-out within two hours of your phone ringing to assist. Most of these services are based in Salford, but they operate throughout much of northern England, much like the national express.

Free garden club membership

If you’re a gardener at heart or simply enjoy exploring your local park or greenspace, then local council freebies may have caught your attention. In exchange for some money-saving vouchers, they offer free horticultural advice (or at least a leaflet), free garden show tickets, discounted membership to RHS gardens and even free magazines! Keeping up with the latest gardening trends and innovations will keep you at the top of your game long into the future, just like keeping your glasses updated with Specsavers.

Free prescriptions

If you’re over 65 and living in the UK, you may qualify for free prescriptions if you meet certain criteria or possess a medical exemption. However, the Government is currently consulting on changes that would align the upper age exemption for NHS prescription charges with State Pension age (SPA) – perhaps it’s time to exchange your glasses prescription for some budget-friendly options at Specsavers?

Many in their 60s who are economically active and more able to afford prescriptions may find this burdensome. Additionally, those caring for family or disabled friends may have additional responsibilities which prevent them from working. For those who need to travel for these responsibilities, options like the national express provide reliable transportation.

Free supermarket discount

Britain is facing an increasing cost-of-living crisis, so many supermarkets are offering discounts for people over 65 to help offset rising expenses. Iceland, for instance, gives free stuff for seniors over 60 a 10% discount on their shopping every Tuesday. For those who have visual needs, Specsavers offers a range of affordable glasses.

This offer is valid at all of The Food Warehouse branches and all of its stores, making it a great way to save on weekly groceries. Simply bring proof of age (such as a driving license or senior bus/rail card from national express) to receive the discount and take advantage of this great offer.

Pension Credit

Pension Credit is a financial benefit offered by the government to low-income seniors over 65. It ensures that their income does not fall below a minimum level. Eligible seniors can receive additional financial support through Pension Credit, which may also provide access to other benefits, such as free TV licenses or even discounted glasses from Specsavers.

Free TV Licence

Previously, all seniors over 75 in the UK were entitled to a free TV licence. However, as of August 2020, the policy changed, and only those reached state pension age or receiving Pension Credit are eligible for this perk. For those who qualify reach state pension age, this benefit ensures uninterrupted access to television, saving money on entertainment costs, and leaves a budget for necessities such as glasses from Specsavers or a National Express pass.

Winter Fuel Payment scheme If you or a member of your household are over 65, you are eligible for financial support towards your winter energy costs. The UK government provides eligible households with between £150-£300 tax-free to help cover the cost of heating your household between November and December. As winter can make travel hard, having a National Express pass can be a real lifesaver.

Discounts for Over 60s

Various retailers and service providers in the UK offer discounts exclusively for individuals aged 60 and above. These discounts cover a wide range of products and services, from groceries and clothing to travel and leisure activities. Seniors should always ask about age-related discounts whenever they make purchases or book services to enjoy substantial savings. All you need to do is present your proof of age, such as a driver’s license or passport, when purchasing your ticket.

It’s also a chance to experience a variety of genres, from heartwarming dramas to action-packed blockbusters, and stay connected to popular culture.

Essential Britain & Ireland

Covered alot of ground and very busy of course with never enough time, but that was expected. Great driver, found tour director somewhat unenthusiastic - would have liked more concise info on how each day was going to progress and a little more interaction with the group. Hotel Metropole was so hot and too noisy to have window open - most of the hotel rooms were so hot all night. Holiday Inn York room was rather well tread and dirty. Other than that a great trip with excellent meals except the dinner at Holiday Inn York.

Celtic Highlights

This was my first trip overseas & traveling alone & I would do it again in a heartbeat. My experience with Globus through the tour director, Peter Dundon, and the bus driver, Ein, will have me traveling again using Globus. From the time we entered the bus each day and exited each night he kept us informed on every city, Castle, ruins, myths, legends, history and more. He had a vast knowledge to share with us and also read poetry and sang local songs. Our bus driver was also very helpful as well as excellent behind the wheel through LOTS of narrow streets. Well done Globus.

What people love about UK and Great Britain Tours for Seniors

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
The driver, Billy, and tour director, Speedy, made the trip very interesting and informative. They were both very helpful. We were disappointed that some of the hotel didn’t really cater for the older tourist with rooms a fair distance from reception, climbing stairs and dragging our luggage.
I really enjoyed the trip

Senior Travel

Senior travel perhaps doesn’t need a category all to itself, after all, us oldies are people too, despite what those self-important whippersnappers would have us believe!

Senior travel Joshua Tree National Park

Our parents would have been happy to see 70 and a trip to Scarborough, Blackpool, Southend or Stonehaven would have classed as a mighty fine holiday. Things have changed. Going round the world at 80 is a possibility and retirement is a world of opportunity, not just your last few years trying to hinder your loved ones as little as possible.

You’ve worked long and hard and the world is now your oyster, not quite literally, but certainly it is yours to be discovered. Perhaps you were always too busy to go on that trip to Australia you’d always dreamed of, or couldn’t afford that luxury trans-Atlantic cruise.

Senior travel

Back to reality: age is just a number and the numbers and the rules have changed. Whether we call it senior travel or not, our options are more or less the same as those of anyone else and in this section of the site we aim to show you what is possible, what other oldies have done and inspire you to take that dream trip, but with the undoubted added benefit that there are loads and loads of discounts available once you reach your golden years. Bring it on!

Mount Etna

We’ll also bring you some top senior travel tips, including insurance deals and other discounts reserved especially for Generation W (that’s “W” for “Wise” by the way).

We’d love to hear from you too, so whether you’ve got any senior travel questions, tips, gripes (apparently we’re all grumpy!) or ideas, or just want to share your amazing holiday stories, photos or plans, please get in touch . Our aim is that section of the site becomes the first port of call for all us oldsters who still have a passion for travel, and the greater the quantity and quality of information we can bring together, the more we can help one another.

So, best foot forward and onward we march on to adventures the youngsters just haven’t got the gumption (or funds) to undertake.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Politics latest: Next Scottish FM tipped to be 'crowned with no contest' after Yousaf quits

Humza Yousaf has announced his resignation as SNP leader and Scotland's first minister following the fallout from his decision to end the SNP's powersharing agreement with the Scottish Greens. Former SNP leader John Swinney is an early favourite for the job.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates is now joining Sophy Ridge, and he comes prepared with some brand new polling on the Tees Valley mayoral election.

Ben Houchen is in a seven-point lead, he says, with Labour's candidate trailing behind with an estimated 44% of the vote and the Liberal Democrats with 5%.

"It's not a massive lead," Sam stresses. "It's down from 73% when this seat was last fought, he's dropped to 51%, but a clear lead over Chris McEwan the Labour candidate and the Lib Dems far behind there."

He adds that he was "really ahead" in the over 65s category.

Turning to the West Midlands, a YouGov poll have put Conservative candidate Andy Street two points ahead of Labour.

"YouGov say these figures are essentially too close to call... actually you can see the Lib Dems, Reform, Green and the independent George Galloway-backed candidate totalling much more than the 2%.

"If you squeeze these, then that might just turn the outcome."

Sam says that Thursday - the day of the local elections - could well be a "red letter day" for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

This would be the case "if he loses half of his local councillors" and mayoral elections.

"But, this polling suggests that Rishi Sunak is in with a chance of holding on" in Tees Valley and the West Midlands.

If he does that, Sam says, "could it be Labour who have been ramping up expectations  then end up having to do some explaining?"

That wraps up tonight's Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge, but we'll have all the latest from Westminster and beyond throughout the night.

The week has kicked off with a huge political story - the resignation of Humza Yousaf - and will end with another, as voters across England and Wales turn out for the local elections.

Sky's political reporter Alexandra Rogers   has looked ahead to a potentially defining night for Rishi Sunak's premiership, when hundreds of council seats, police and crime commissioner jobs, and mayoral posts will be up for grabs.

Read her full explainer below:

We're turning briefly to the diplomatic row which has erupted between the UK and Irish governments over Rishi Sunak's Rwanda policy.

Dublin has claimed that the threat of being sent to Rwanda has led to some migrants crossing from Northern Ireland into Ireland, and that it would introduce emergency legislation to send them back to the UK.

Our Ireland correspondent  Stephen Murphy  says some refugees in the country feel like they are being used as "pawns in a much wider political game".

He says he has spoken to five or six people that have attributed their journey from Britain to Northern Ireland, and subsequently to Ireland, as directly due to the Conservatives' Rwanda scheme.

There is "reality" in the Irish government's claims, Murphy says - but he adds the suggestion migrants from Northern Ireland make up 80% of those seeking support is "also just an estimate".

"It is a political row, but it's hard sometimes to remember at the heart of all this is people, and the people here that we spoke to, they really do feel they're now being used as pawns in a much wider political game."

Read more on this below:

Next up is Alex Salmond, the former first minister of Scotland and current leader of the Alba Party.

Asked for his reaction to the day's events, he says: "I do feel for Humza (Yousaf) today, I mean I've been there, I've done a resignation speech as first minister."

Mr Salmond says most people in politics aspire to be in the "top job", adding: "It's a great wrench when you leave it."

Sophy then asks about suggestions that the Alba Party could have propped up the Scottish government with their one MSP. A source had said: "That would be like doing a deal with the devil."

What does it say that Mr Yousaf would rather collapse his own leadership than make a deal with the Alba Party?

"Well, what it says is it is not true," Mr Salmond says.

He adds: "I'm not certain that everyone around Humza Yousaf was acting in his best interests."

Newspaper 'briefed' about replacing Yousaf

The politician points to a Times newspaper story from this morning that claimed Mr Yousaf would resign - and be replaced by John Swinney.

"That might well be accurate," he says. "But I'm very puzzled by this."

Mr Salmond also questions reports that Mr Yousaf was trying to save his job in a phone call to Ash Regan - the MSP for the Alba Party - at 7.30am today.

Sophy asks him to clarify whether he thinks there was a plot to oust Mr Yousaf in favour of Mr Swinney.

The Alba Party leader points again to The Times front page.

"Somebody briefed The Times newspaper," he says.

Sophy Ridge puts to Douglas Ross that he is the "Keir Starmer of Scotland", having used the SNP's latest leadership crisis to call for an early election.

Sir Keir has done just that at Westminster on many occasions, having seen the Tories replace both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss since he became Labour leader.

Scottish Conservatives leader Mr Ross says 17 years of SNP rule has worsened the country, and claims that waiting lists in Scotland are the "worst anywhere in the United Kingdom".

He says his inbox is "full of people" who can't see a GP or get the surgery they need.

"We know more and more people in Scotland are going private because they can't wait in pain," he says.

Mr Ross denies it is the "unspoken political truth" that his party needs the SNP to do OK in order to avoid Labour "mopping up" seats.

"These are nationalists who want to divide our country all over again, just like they did in 2014. So I want to see as many of them removed from office as possible," he says.

Next up on the show is Douglas Ross, leader of the Scottish Conservatives.

He tells Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge that Humza Yousaf's departure was "inevitable" after his decision to "dump" the Greens out of government.

Asked if there is an SNP frontrunner his party fears the most, Mr Ross says there will be "no contest" with John Swinney likely to be crowned leader.

"It will be more of the same, which is focusing on independence at the expense of the real priorities that people across Scotland have," he says.

Mr Ross also calls for an election in Holyrood.

Keith Brown, the SNP's deputy leader, is then asked whether an election should be called for the Scottish parliament - which is not due until 2026.

He says: "No I don't.

"In Scotland we have a fixed term parliament set by Westminster. People elected MSPs in 2021, they expect them to serve a five-year term."

Mr Brown says those calling for an election - "particularly the Labour Party" - should consider "they have had eight leaders in the time that we've had two leaders".

He adds: "I think in Scotland what people are interested in is making sure we don't end up, as has happened in the rest of the UK, having to pay subscription charges, huge council tax hikes that we've seen in the rest of the UK..."

Sophy interrupts, pointing out the SNP would be accusing another party in this position of not having a mandate.

Mr Brown says: "I think it's important to bear in mind the circumstances."

First up with Sophy Ridge is Keith Brown, the deputy leader of the SNP.

He is asked who he thinks the next leader of his party should be, and says this needs to be "somebody who is experienced and somebody who will bring unity hopefully to the parliament but also to the party".

Mr Brown says one person who would do that is John Swinney, a name we have heard many leading SNP figures back today.

"There may well be others of course as well," he adds.

The deputy leader is then pressed on the possibility of Mr Swinney becoming first minister, and a warning from MP Joanna Cherry that there is "no need for an unseemly rush by the (old) boys' club to stitch up the succession".

He says: "The majority of the cabinet are female and of course we had a very lengthy period with a female leader, so anybody can come forward for this contest.

"I just mention John Swinney as one person who would meet the criteria that I think is very important for the new leader, whoever that is."

We're kicking off tonight's Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge  with - what else - the resignation of Humza Yousaf.

The leader of the SNP, who only took on the role in March last year, has been at the centre of a chaotic few days in Holyrood after he made the surprise announcement to end his powersharing deal with the Scottish Greens on Thursday.

Mr Yousaf cut ties following a bitter row over the SNP's climbdown on climate targets as he said the agreement between the parties had "served its purpose".

But as a result, his former Green allies teamed up with the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats to get behind no confidence motions designed to force him out.

Ahead of those votes taking place, Mr Yousaf stepped down as Scotland's first minister just after midday on Monday as he said he was "not willing to treat my values and principles or do deals with whomever simply for retaining power".

Before we get into tonight's interviews, get a catch-up on the story from our political reporter Alix Culbertson .

It's a hugely significant day in politics.

Humza Yousaf, first minister of Scotland, has stepped down.

Why did he do it? Who’s going to replace him? How much significance does it have for the wider fate of the SNP?

We'll discuss all that on the show tonight.

But there's something else I've been thinking a lot about today.

Mr Yousaf became first minister in March 2023… so he's only been in the job for just over a year.

Don't get me wrong – in comparison to Liz Truss, he's a leadership veteran. But still… a year. That's not very long, is it?

And it feels the wider change in the SNP's fortunes has happened at a whiplash speed.

The dominant force in Scottish politics for so long, now - while still dominant - under more pressure than at any time in over a decade.

Whether it's the former chief executive of the party charged with embezzlement, the failure to live up to promises on climate or education, or a resurgent Labour Party, the SNP has an electoral fight ahead.

Mr Yousaf is a child of the SNP's summer and many believe ill-prepared to fight in these changing conditions.

But still… a year in the job. Just 48 hours ago, he was telling Sky News he would defy a vote of no confidence.

It really does show how quickly modern political power can evaporate.
