Virtual Tours of High Schools

Hi everyone and welcome back to another Momentum Monday. Here at Momentum 360, we’ve been hard at work expanding our business all over the country while still maintaining the same high standards we set for ourselves to meet client needs.

Currently, we have 30 locations spread out all over the continental United States plus Canada! Check out the complete list of locations on our website. We’re so excited for these new locations and can’t wait to service even more areas. As the weather grows colder and concerns over the Coronavirus remain on everyone’s mind, we think it’s more important than ever for your business to invest in a virtual tour.

In this week’s blog post, we are going to be discussing the benefits of having a virtual tour in high schools. This is a little different than the properties we’re used to talking about, but is just as important as virtual tours in residential or commercial real estate, retail, or restaurants. For blogs detailing the benefits of virtual tours in other industries check out earlier posts:

Virtual Tours for Colleges

What Industries Benefit Most from a Virtual Tour

Because of the Coronavirus, many college campuses across the country have ceased to have in-person tours or open houses. These schools have elected to do all of this virtually to minimize the spread of the virus. As most people rely on tours and information sessions to decide which college they would like to attend, these universities have had to utilize virtual tour technology so that prospective students can still get a feel for the campus, the academic and recreational facilities, and the overall vibe of the students already attending the school.

No one can deny that colleges had to step up their game and use virtual tours when they can’t have more people coming to campus, but here at Momentum 360, we’d go a step further and say that high schools should also be investing in this resource. Here’s why.

Decision Making

Depending on where you live, deciding which high school is right for you or your child may not be as straightforward as it seems. In suburban and rural areas, most students simply continue on at the public school in their district. There isn’t much of an option in these areas, unless you decide to forego public school and wish to enroll in a private or religious school. In cities, the decision is a little more complicated, with options ranging from public schools, private schools, religious schools, charter schools, or specialty schools (STEM, theater, technical schools, etc.)

There are many factors that go into choosing the right school for you. One of which is cost. It is no secret that most private education is expensive and that public schools are funded by tax dollars. Many people simply do not have the money to afford the tuition at these private schools.

Another factor that goes into the decision-making process is the results generated by the school, whether it be standardized test scores, athletic accomplishments, or the percentage of graduates that go on to higher education or into the work force.

Finally, one important factor is the resources offered by the school. “Resources,” when talked about in this context, is basically an all-encompassing word for how much funding the school gets and how much of that money is poured back into the students. This can be anything from facilities to educational materials to extracurricular events, and more.

A virtual tour can go a long way in highlighting these resources available for students and can really show off the school even if prospective students can’t see it in person.

A big reason why some students elect to go to a high school outside of their district’s public school is for athletic purposes. Though there are rules regulating or even prohibiting high schools from recruiting student athletes, much of the draw for students comes from well-performing athletic programs. Whether it is a basketball court, a football stadium, a swimming facility, or some other type of athletic stadium, the grounds on which athletes will be playing can influence their decision.

Some students, assuming they have the means to do so, will attend high schools hours away from their homes for the benefit of progressing athletically. Private schools also have more reach when it comes to college recruitment, which is a big plus for those looking to play sports in college.

Recently, Momentum 360 created virtual tours for Paul VI High School, a Catholic high school in Haddonfield, New Jersey. The 3D tours highlight all different aspects of the school including the lobby, dance studio, science labs, gymnasium, chapel, robotics lab, auditorium, and more. This allows prospective students to see what the school is like, how it is set up, and what kinds of facilities are set up to help its students succeed.

Check out the Paul VI High School virtual tours!

These tours are set up to not only showcase the different areas of the school, but also to provide information about the history, programs, and COVID-19 social distancing measures. It’s a really easy way to give people more information while still protecting the safety of potential visitors, students, and staff at Paul VI.

All in all, having a virtual tour is just as important on a high school campus as it is on a college campus, and our team would be happy to help you get started.

Matthew and the team have been incredibly helpful and professional throughout the process of the 360 virtual tour. From the first call, to the finished product, everything ran smoothly and quickly. On the day, they were able to provide us with suggestions and comments for the best shots. The finished tour is excellent and better than we could have ever expected.

360 Virtual Tours provided us with an exceptional 360 tour of our college campus. They were attentive, enthusiastic, and easy to work with from the start of the project, as well as being incredibly organised. At a time when we couldn’t welcome prospective students and families through our doors, they provided an invaluable insight into our college. Thank you very much to Matthew and his team, we would highly recommend you to anyone that asks.

From initial enquiry through to final launch, 360 Virtual Tours provided us with an efficient and highly professional service. The photoshoot ran very smoothly, thanks to Matthew’s expertise, and the final product was everything we expected it would be.

The service provided by 360 virtual tours was professional, supportive and efficient from the start of the process to the final edit. We are delighted with the virtual tour and the service that we received – we would recommend the services of 360 virtual tours to other schools.

Thank you to 360 virtual tours for putting together tours of our five college campuses and university centre. These have been a fantastic resource in a year when open events for our potential students weren’t a possibility, and we have had many compliments on the quality and how easy they are to navigate. Working with 360 was an extremely straight forward process. They are helpful, professional and got the final tours put together quickly for us to an excellent standard.

We were very impressed at how 360 Virtual Tours were able to bring our exhibition and laboratories to life. The process was very smooth and all done remotely from taking the photos, to designing the layout and style, and to incorporating our edits. 360 Virtual Tours comes with our highest recommendation. The result is a polished, dynamic, and immersive experience!

Providence School Board approves resolution to reverse 360 High School merger

T he Providence School Board voted unanimously on a resolution to reverse the decision to merge 360 High School with another school in the district.

The superintendent says the decision has already been made.

Several teachers spoke at the meeting urging the school board to vote for the resolution that calls for Providence Public Schools to keep 360 High School up and running.

In February the district made the decision to merge the school with the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex to become one school.

Many of them said that while the district has been making these decisions, they've felt unsupported and unsure about what the future looks like.

They say it's impacting their ability to teach and students ability to learn.

Some teachers said they have started the process to find other jobs in the district and while some have gotten offers, others have not.

The unanimous vote came from school board members who said the district did not handle the closure and communication about it properly.

“I have to say I’m disappointed, disappointed in the finality in your voice about this decision that the community has said was not transparent and they were not a part of,” said a school board member.

“The decision to restructure was informed by a thorough evaluation and progress including the review of performance data and the compliance with the states regulations,” said Providence Public Schools superintendent Javier Montañez.

The superintendent said last night the decision had already been made to close the high school.

He says student placement has started and teachers have started their transfer process as well.

Providence City Council holds hearing on restructuring of 360 High School

by LIZ BATESON, NBC 10 NEWS

360 High School in Providence. (WJAR)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — The Providence Public Schools superintendent met with City Council members and community members for the first time since announcing the closure of 360 High School.

The conversation centered around how the city handles school closures, after the superintendent, Dr. Javier Montañez, sent a letter in February announcing that the school would be merging with Juanita Sanchez High School at the end of the school year. The schools are located inside the same building.

“I understand the passion around this issue, but the data is clear. What is happening right now, it's not working for our students,” said Montañez.

At the hearing Thursday night, Montañez doubled down on the restructuring of the school, citing decreased enrollment and poor student performance as major factors.

"If you look at math proficiency, 1.5% of students are. ELA arts proficiency is at 8.2%. All schools with similar or higher rates were on the redesign," he said.

Montañez added that math proficiency rates for multi-lingual learners is at 0% and ELA proficiency for multi-lingual learners is at 4%. Additionally, the graduation rate is at 75% and the dropout rate is 16%.

Council members and teachers who spoke at the hearing took issue with how the district rolled out the merger.

"I am tired of the people in power not showing up or when they do, showing a complete lack of understanding for the decision or way it was rolled out," said social studies teacher Jason Barker. "I'm still waiting for an apology. I'm waiting for a single human to recognize that the community of 360 High School has a loss."

  • MORE COVERAGE: Providence School Board approves resolution to reverse 360 High School merger

Montañez said information leaks impacted how the district handled the closure. NBC 10 News first reported the closure after teachers received a letter from the superintendent notifying them of the decision.

Providence City Council member Miguel Sanchez questioned why there was no public feedback before the decision was made final.

"My biggest issue is how these decisions have been made," said Sanchez. "How can the community, school, families, teachers have a voice before decisions are made?"

In response, Montañez said the district is working on putting a policy in place to handle closures and consolidations.

"That's part of the feedback we've received and one of the policies we're working on right now. Yes, we're putting something in place to make sure it's followed," he said.

Montañez says the 360 merger will save the district $1.7 million and will give students more opportunities, including greater electives, CTE (Career & Technical Education) pathways, sports and more, but he still faces pushback.

“The closure of 360 High School, in my opinion, would only exacerbate the existing inequities in our education system. It would disproportionately affect our marginalized communities that rely on this school as a lifeline for their children's future,” said Jason Roias, a former Providence Public Schools student.

Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green was not in attendance at the hearing.

"There's this ongoing conversation that attendance matters. The fact that the superintendent isn't here is a shame," said Councilman John Goncalves.

Montañez said a majority of 360 High School students are enrolled at JSEC for next school year. He says just 16 of the 286 students have opted to attend other schools.

City Council holds hearing on 360 High School closure, but Infante-Green absent

PROVIDENCE - Rhode Island Department of Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green was absent from a City Council hearing on the controversial closing of 360 High School , leaving the district superintendent to field a barrage of questions from frustrated council members.

The Thursday night hearing was of the few times community members have been afforded a chance to speak out about the decision to shutter the school, which was abruptly announced in February. It was also a rare moment when the council weighed in on a school closure, which is not within its power to change.

Providence Public School District Supt. Javier Montañez testified, defending the decision as a merger, not a closure, a message the district has been eager to send. Department of Education spokesman Victor Morente said it was Montañez who recommended the closing, and Infante-Green "affirmed the decision after careful consideration of the factors presented to her, including data demonstrating chronic underperformance and the expansion of access to high-quality education programs" in a planned life-sciences institute at Juanita Sanchez.

Morente said the commissioner – who leads the department that has for years been in control of Providence's public schools – had a scheduling conflict the evening of the hearing. But when Councilman John Goncalves asked Montañez at the hearing why the commissioner wasn't there, he made no mention of a scheduling issue.

"That is something you have to ask the commissioner," he said. "I can't speak for her."

Without Infante-Green present, Montañez was tasked with answering a round of inquiries about the closing and the way it was announced. He blamed information leaks that he felt preempted his handling of the closure announcement. This is at least the second time the district has blamed leaks for negative reactions to school-closing announcements.

More: Students stage walkout over 360 High School closure. Here's why it's shuttering.

Here's why Montañez says 360 is closing

In a letter to the City Council dated March 18, Montañez described the school's closing as a "restructuring." The high school is located within the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex, which also houses Juanita Sanchez High School. The plan is to merge the students of the schools.

The announcement prompted a student walkout and left 34 teachers with displacement notices that did not guarantee them new jobs in the district. That's against a larger backdrop of repeated school closure announcements made without advance input from families and educators, who said they have felt blindsided as a result.

More: For students, teachers at 360 High School, confusion and tears over announcement of closing

Montañez's letter made clear that despite the hearing, there's no turning back.

"We are moving forward with this decision," the letter read. "At this point, in accordance with contractual stipulations, teaching staff have received their displacement notices and the district has begun the process of assigning placements for next year. At this time, less than ten 360 High School students have opted to transfer to a school other than the Juanita Sanchez Life Sciences Institute."

At Thursday's hearing, the superintendent noted 360 High School's critically low math and English language proficiency, which was even lower among multilingual learners. Montañez said the graduation rate is at just 75% while the dropout rate is 16%. "Any high school with similar rates" was slated for what's described as a redesign, Montañez said. But 360 isn't being redesigned; it's being closed. There is no process by which a school can apply for redesign.

Councilman Pedro Espinal, who represents the ward where 360 sits, said the poor academic numbers show there's a "huge problem that is much bigger than the merger of JSEC and 360," fueled by a "system that is doing everything but educating our kids."
