Haircut 100 to play first UK tour in 41 years in October and November 2023

14 headline shows

Haircut 100 have announced an extensive UK tour for October and November 2023.

The band’s first full UK tour in 41 years opens at Newcastle NX on 12th October and visits Edinburgh, Manchester, Leicester, Birmingham, Reading, Bournemouth, Cardiff, Cambridge, Bath, Bexhill, Ipswich and Liverpool before concluding at York Barbican on 17th November.

Haircut 100 singer Nick Heyward enthuses: “40 years since ‘Pelican West’ went Platinum, and we thought a few people might want to celebrate with us at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

“But we are coming back with a tour to beat all tours this autumn, and we can’t wait. All the hits that you love and new tracks that we are bursting to share with you. See you all there for the biggest tour that Haircut 100 have ever undertaken.”

Bringing the past 40 years whizzing into the present day, the Haircut 100 boys will come together to fuse the sounds of the original Pelican West album, along with their classic 80s hits, as well as new music from the band.

They got back together for VH1's Bands Reunited in 2004, before a one-off reunion at a solo Heyward show in 2009.

There has been talk of the band working on new material for the past decade, though none has been released in that time.

More hits followed with that same album’s  Fantastic Day  and one-off  Nobody’s Fool , both of which peaked within the Top 10, but shortly afterwards the vocalist departed and pursued a successful solo career over the decades that followed.

However, the original quartet has remained friends throughout the years and the foursome got back together in 2004 to perform  Love Plus One  and  Fantastic Day  on VH1’s ‘Bands Reunited’ TV show, then did the whole of their debut album at Indigo at The O2 in London in 2011.

Earlier this year, Nick told RETROPOP’s that he, Les and Graham are in the very early stages of making a new album together, sharing: “Who knows what will happen but there’ll be lots of creativity going on. That’s the band: it’s the strong bond between Les, Graham and I. In the beginning we lived together above a flower shop in Gloucester Road and we loved each other. We were such great mates and we still are.”

Since working together again, they’ve never discussed Nick’s solo success and whether there was any jealousy there. “We haven’t talked about it. It’s like when guys don’t talk about things that have happened with ex-girlfriends and stuff like that,” he insisted. “I know guys who can play golf together for years and never talk about the fact one of their wives left them for the other one.

“There’s loads of unanswered questions but as Les says now, ‘I just let everything go,’ and I agree with that. It’s a much better place to be in when you let everything go. We’ve moved on and when we get together now it’s always great.

“It’s not just for Christmas or whether we do one gig together. We are bandmates even when the band isn’t active. We turn up somewhere and we’re dressed the same. There’s an alchemy there, an innate way of sticking together. Les, Graham and I have now said, ‘This is it now, friends for life’.”

Haircut 100 announce first UK tour in 40 years

June 27, 2023 by admin 0 Comments

Haircut 100 have announced their first UK and Ireland tour in 40 years. Check out a full list of tour dates below.

The band will embark on a 15-date tour run starting in Dublin at Vicar St. From there, they will make stops along Newcastle, Edinburgh, Manchester, Leicester, Birmingham, Reading, Bournemouth, Cardiff, Cambridge and more. York will be their last stop and will see them headline at the Barbican.

Speaking about Haircut 100’s ‘Pelican West’ 40th anniversary shows in London and Oxford this past May – which sold out in less than 20 minutes – frontman Nick Heyward shared: “40 years since ‘Pelican West’ went Platinum, and we thought a few people might want to celebrate with us at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire…”

“Wow! What a fantastic night it was back in May this year! Our fans are incredible and tickets sold out so fast that our families and friends almost missed the boat, those tickets became gold dust.”

He continued: “But we are coming back with a tour to beat all tours this autumn, and we can’t wait. All the hits that you love and new tracks that we are bursting to share with you. See you all there for the biggest tour that Haircut 100 have ever undertaken.”

As per a press release, the Haircut 100 boys will come together to fuse the sounds of the original ‘Pelican West’ LP, along with their classic ’80s hits and new music from the band. Tickets will be available on general on-sale from Friday June 30 at 10am. Visit here to purchase.

Haircut 100 2023 UK and Ireland tour dates are :

OCTOBER 10 – Dublin, Vicar St 12 – Newcastle, NX 13 – Edinburgh, Queens Hall 18 – Manchester, O2 Ritz 19 – Leicester, De Montfort Hall 25 – Birmingham, Town Hall 28 – Reading, Hexagon

Earlier this year, the band covered Harry Styles’ hit ‘As It Was’ at live at BBC’s iconic Maida Vale studios . “It’s a great song, isn’t it? [It’s] so catchy,” said Heyward when Radio 2’s Ken Bruce asked him why they had chosen to cover ‘As It Was’.

More about the bands

The last Haircut 100 Tour was in 1982: https://retrodundee.blogspot.com/2010/04/haircut-100-bluebells-caird-hall-1982.html?m=1

Haircut 100 released their debut album in February 1982, Pelican West .  The band were an instant smash with four UK Top 10 singles including ‘Fantastic Day’, ‘Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)’ and ‘Love Plus One’, with the album storming into the UK Top 10 for three months, ten weeks of which were in the Top 5, and 34 weeks in the Top 40.

Over 40 years on, the band released a bonus version of that iconic Pelican West album, with a one-off live show to bring the album to life – public demand for tickets spurred the need for a full UK tour.  Haircut 100 are back!  Over four CDs, there are 54 tracks, of which 24 are unreleased, including nascent versions of later Nick Heyward solo hits ‘Whistle Down The Wind’, ‘Blue Hat For A Blue Day’ and the great lost Haircut 100 single ‘Sunny Boy, Sunny Girl’.  The album is available as a Super Deluxe Edition featuring a new remaster of Pelican West , all the 12” mixes and b-sides, a live set from Hammersmith Odeon and for the first time, the demos for their unfinished second album, which was given the provisional title Blue Hat For A Blue Day .   The 4-CD set features a 44-page booklet with a new 10,000-word sleeve note featuring an oral history of the time with all  members interviewed by the set’s curator, author and DJ Daryl Easlea. The booklet includes memorabilia and exclusive photos from the personal collection of Haircut’s guitarist Graham Jones and bassist Les Nemes.

Taking their lead musically from an eclectic set of influences that range from Glam Pop to Broadway, Barbara make classic, irresistible 70s infused pop music. Whilst the influence on the band’s sound is noticeably American, Barbara’s lyrics are quintessentially British, infused with the inquisitive, satirical spirit of Harold Pinter, George Orwell and Ray Davies. In 2022 Barbara were handpicked by Neil Hannon to support The Divine Comedy on their ‘Charmed Life’ UK tour.

“They are so up my street … really tight songwriting, very poptastic!”

Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy)

“Barbara are wonderful. I love their songs and their humour. We need more Barbara in our lives!”

Chris Difford (Squeeze)

“Barbara are an insanely talented band with an innate sense of melody and arrangement … The ambitious scope and toe tapping immediacy of their sound belies their tender years.”

BARBARA CONFIRM 2023 UK TOUR WITH HAIRCUT 100

Sean LoveLiverpool

Vintage-pop duo – BARBARA – will be supporting legendary new wave band Haircut 100 on their UK tour this October/November, and are set to share new single “Master Narrative” to coincide with the dates.

Kicking off in Newcastle on 12 October , the extensive live run will see stops in 14 towns and cities across the country – dates and details below.

Speaking of their excitement for the tour ahead, Barbara say:

“We can’t wait to tour with the guys in Haircut 100 this Autumn. We had such a brilliant time opening for them at Shepherd’s Bush in May, and it was a real thrill to play for their fans who are clearly connoisseurs of perfect pop. We’re very excited about performing our lovingly crafted collection of theatrical ditties for many more of them up and down the country!”

Around the tour, Barbara will share the artful and eccentric classic-pop of new single “ Master Narrative ”. A fun-filled schmaltz beamed straight out of the 70s, it sees the duo infusing the polished pop melodies of yesteryear with meticulously-crafted offbeat idiosyncrasies all their own. Due for release this November, the new track was produced by Paul Steel and mixed/mastered by Julian Tardo at Church Road Studios . Stay tuned for the new track in the coming weeks…

Hinting at what to expect at their upcoming shows, Barbara have also recently shared charming live performance videos for new songs “ These New Communications ” and “ Pretty Straight Guy ”, recorded live from their rehearsal space, Brighton Electric. The films were captured by Avocado Baby Media and are available to watch now.

A duo of brothers from Hove on the South Coast, Barbara are Henry and John Tydeman . Taking their lead from an eclectic set of influences that range from Glam Pop to Broadway, they make classic, irresistible pop music with a literary and intellectual approach. Whilst the influence on the music is noticeably American, Barbara’s lyrics are quintessentially British, infused with the inquisitive, satirical spirit of Harold Pinter, George Orwell and Ray Davies .

Releasing a string of tracks since their inception in 2021, the band have earned praise from national titles like BBC Introducing and Louder Than War . Catching the ear of kindred spirit Tom Rees (of Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard ) he went on to produce the band’s previous single “ Rainy Days In June ”. The band released their humorously-titled debut EP ‘ Mildly Entertaining ’ last year.

With the brothers joined by three other musicians when performing on stage, Barbara’s live shows to date have attracted much acclaim. With sparkling performances at festivals such as Isle Of Wight, the band were also handpicked by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy to support the band on their ‘Charmed Life’ UK tour. “They are so up my street,” Hannon enthused, “really tight songwriting, very poptastic!’. Barbara have also recently supported Squeeze , with Chris Difford praising: “Barbara are wonderful. I love their songs and their humour. We need more Barbara in our lives!”.

Barbara – At The Barrier’s favourite fop-poppers – were delighted to announce today that they’ve been invited to open for Haircut 100 on their UK Tour that kicks off in Belfast on Monday 9th October. Book your tickets NOW – this one promises to be something very special…

haircut 100 tour uk

At The Barrier regulars will be well aware of our affection for Brighton’s Barbara. The guys – led by brothers John and Henry Tydeman – are regular visitors to these pages. We LOVED their 2022 mini-album, Mildly Entertaining , and just LOVE to catch them performing live. And, just this morning, we got the nod from the band’s HQ that they’ve been invited to open for Haircut 100 on their 14-night October and November jaunt around the UK. Barbara opened for Haircut 100 when they played London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire back in May, and we have ultra-reliable assurances that they went down a storm and that a great time was had by all. Well – Nick Heyward & Co must have been mightily impressed, and the Barbara guys are DELIGHTED to have invited along on the tour.

Of course, Barbara are no strangers to the big stage – they toured with The Divine Comedy last year and, just like Nick Heyward, Comedy’s Neil Hannon was also won over to the Barbara cause, later saying “[Barbara] are so up my street… Really tight songwriting, very poptastic.” We probably wouldn’t argue with Neil Hannon under any circumstances, but there’s no doubt that, on this on this occasion, he hit the nail squarely on the head!

barbara

Barbara are one of At The Barrier’s genuine Tips for the Top. Their live shows are awesome, as we found when we caught them in Brighton and Manchester last year, and this new tour is one that you miss at your peril. We firmly believe that Barbara are only a stroke of good fortune away from achieving something very, very special and – who knows – this tour just might open some of the doors that none of us knew ever existed. At The Barrier Will will popping along. Take our advice – get yourself along to show near you – this is going to be brilliant.
