Visiting Japan in October: The Best of Autumn in Japan

Why visit Japan in October - temple with orange bridge

The best travel experience of my life was visiting Japan in October. As a fall foliage fanatic, I loved seeing the country decorated in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. And when you add in pleasant weather, cheaper travel, and traditional festivals, autumn in Japan becomes the ideal time for a trip.

I’m sure cherry blossom fans are shocked to hear this bold statement! However, I’ve been to Tokyo and Kyoto for sakura season, and I still feel the fall season in Japan is superior.

Is it cold in Japan in October?

Japan is a multi-island nation with a very diverse climate. October in Hokkaido looks (and feels) very different from October in Okinawa.

That being said, October is the rare month where weather is pleasant across the entire country. Even in the northern parts of Japan, high temperatures hover around 16°C/60°F.

As you head south, temps continue to rise. Central Japan (around Tokyo/Kyoto) and Kyushu see highs around 22°C/71°F, while Okinawa is a warm 25°C/77°F.

However, elevation plays a big role in how cold it gets. For example, the mountain areas of Kamikochi National Park are far cooler than nearby Matsumoto city, especially when the sun goes down.

You’ll find a fall packing list for Japan further down the post.

Will I see fall foliage in Japan in October?

Togakushi Mirror Lake with fall foliage and white clouds.

As I mentioned above, Japan is spread across multiple climates. This means that not all areas will get autumn foliage at the same time.

Koyo (fall foliage in Japanese) starts at Hokkaido in early October, and spreads south towards central Honshu over the course of the month. Mountain areas like Nagano will get autumn colors sooner because of the cooler temperatures.

By the end of October, autumn foliage will have peaked in places like Nikko and Aomori, but will have just kicked off in Tokyo and Kyoto.

This post will cover some of the best places to see autumn leaves in Japan. But to create your ultimate momijigari (leaf-peeping) trip, you should use an updated forecast .

The current year’s weather affects when the leaves start turning, so always check the koyo forecast before planning your itinerary!

Woman in red yukata representing what to wear in Japan in October.

Layers are the secret to dressing for autumn weather in Japan. Even in the northern cities, the midday highs in October are often warm enough for t-shirts and pants. But temperatures drop during the mornings and evenings, making a jacket essential.

I’m a big fan of minimalist packing and carry-on only travel. I managed to fit a week’s worth of clothes into my Tortuga Setout backpack, and they worked for 20°C/70°F days in Tokyo and 7°C/45°F evenings in the Nagano mountains.

Here’s what to include in your fall Japan packing list:

  • Lightweight tops
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Pants/Long skirts
  • Lightweight* rain jacket (I bring my Columbia Waterproof Jacket on every trip)
  • Light gloves ( convertible mittens or touchscreen-friendly gloves are ideal)
  • Comfortable, closed-toed shoes (versatile white Adidas Classics are my favorite)
  • 1 dressier outfit (if planning to eat at a nice restaurant)
  • *Heavier jacket required if heading to Hokkaido or mountainous areas

Togakushi forest path with fall foliage during October in Japan.

Nestled in the mountains of central Honshu, Nagano prefecture is an ideal place to spend October in Japan. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, with waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic viewpoints galore.

Around mid-October, fall foliage spreads through the region, and peaks towards the end of the month. While nearby Tokyo is still pretty green, cities like Karuizawa and Komoro are awash in red and gold.

Luckily, Nagano is only an 80-120 minute train ride away from Tokyo, so you can easily take a leaf-peeping day trip.

Some of the best things to do in Nagano include visiting Shirato Falls in Karuizawa , hiking the Togakushi Shrine path, and watching the famous snow monkeys of Jigokudani take an onsen bath.

Kamikochi forest river path with distant mountain view.

Kamikochi is widely considered to be one of the country’s most beautiful national parks. The pristine mountain valley is stunning year-round, but this famous place in Japan truly comes alive in October.

From golden larches reflecting in Taisho Pond to red Japanese maple leaves drifting on the breeze, Kamikochi is a wonderland for fall foliage in Japan. And the main trails are accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, so you can enjoy this autumn jewel without fancy hiking gear.

The only tricky thing about Kamikochi is that it’s somewhat remote, and there’s a motor vehicle ban in the park. However, it’s easy to travel here by bus if you do a little research.

Fortunately, I wrote a detailed Kamikochi hiking guide to help you have an amazing, stress-free trip!

Japan’s northernmost main island is a land of rugged natural beauty. Volcanic mountains and dense forests surround the island’s developed cities, providing plenty of opportunities for leaf peeping.

When people ask where to go in Japan in October, Daisetsuzan National Park is often the answer. Daisetsuzan is Japan’s largest national park, and it’s famous for being the first place in the country to get autumn foliage.

Waterfalls, canyons, golden mountaintop shrines… If Nikko isn’t on your radar, it should be!

Nikko is best known for Toshogu Shrine, the opulent final resting place of shogunate leader Tokugawa Ieyasu. The village sits at the edge of Nikko Nationa Park, which boasts some of Japan’s best places for fall color in October. Highlights include Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and Ryuokyo Canyon.

Nikko is only 2 hours away from Tokyo by bullet train, so it’s a great autumn day trip option. Its beautiful and peaceful location also make it ideal for visitors traveling to Japan alone .

Nara deer in front of lake with shrine and fall foliage.

With sacred deer roaming ancient temple grounds strewn in autumn leaves, it’s no wonder Nara is a fall favorite.

Fall foliage in Nara doesn’t peak until November, but places like Mt. Wakakusa will take on color starting in late October. Even if the weather pushes back koyo , you can still enjoy the town’s amazing attractions, like Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Grand Shrine, without heavy crowds.

Unlike other Japanese cities, much of Kanazawa has been preserved since the Edo period. You can explore centuries-old neighborhoods, a ninja temple, and the iconic Kanazawa Castle against a backdrop of fiery hues. Kanazawa is on a direct shinkansen line from Tokyo, making it an easy day trip or secondary destination.

On October 22nd, the grand Jidai Matsuri festival celebrates the founding of the city. Thousands of performers dressed as geisha, samurai, and other historical figures parade through the streets towards Heian Shrine.

In nearby Arashiyama, dozens of women dressed in colorful Heian period costumes participate in the Saigu Procession (Saigū Gyōretsu). This event recreates the purification and departure ritual of a royal woman leaving to serve as a shrine priestess.

Visiting Tokyo in October is a great idea. While you won’t see much autumn foliage, the lighter crowds and Halloween festivities more than make up for it.

Halloween may be a Western holiday, but in the land of cosplay, it’s a full-blown celebration. All month, shops and restaurants decorate with displays and sell themed food and merchandise. And on the 31st, the streets of Akihabara look like an outdoor Halloween party.

For the ultimate Halloween experience, head to Tokyo Disney. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter comes alive with pumpkins, giant cobwebs, and skeleton wreaths. And experiences like the Haunted Mansion and Spooky Boo! parade transform the park into a magical must-see.

Nagoya Castle with red tree and partly cloudy sky view.

Anyone interested in Japanese history and culture should visit Nagoya in October. Near the middle of the month, the city puts on its largest event: the Nagoya Festival.

It’s a cultural extravaganza featuring two days of parades, traditional folk music, horseback archery competitions, and plenty of must eat Japanese food . Modern elements, like marching bands and motor vehicles, are also woven into the festivities.

Autumn color doesn’t usually arrive in Nagoya until November. However, attractions like Nagoya Castle and the Sakae entertainment district provide plenty of amusement in addition to the festival.

Kurama Fire Festival

Known as hi-matsuri , Japanese fire festivals are beloved by locals and tourists alike. On the evening of October 22nd, the hot spring village of Kurama hosts an epic, flaming processional up to Yuki Jinja.

Hundreds of villagers clad in traditional garb carry torches through the streets, and add them to the bonfire once they reach the shrine.

Nagasaki Kunchi

From October 7-9, parades and performances take over the city of Nagasaki. This popular festival has everything from sailboat-looking floats to energetic traditional dancing. Foreigners should check out this website for more information on how to watch the events, as seated tickets are difficult to buy outside of Japan.

Your best bet for enjoying this festival is to book a local guide .

Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival

On the evening of October 4th, more than 2,000 red paper lanterns drift through the streets of Nihonmatsu. Locals bob and weave as they carry the seven floats holding lanterns and drummers. It’s one of Japan’s most impressive lantern festivals, especially when the floats travel in front of Nihonmatsu Castle.

Nada Fighting Festival

If you think Japan is all about quiet rituals and pretty lanterns, think again! Every October 14-15, male residents of Hyogo prefecture put on a wild show of strength and destruction.

Day one of the Nada Fighting Festival involves a blessing and parade of decorated floats. But on the second day, groups of men in traditional clothing ram three floats together in an effort to destroy one.

All this action is set to beating drums and chanting onlookers, making it one of Japan’s more lively fall events.

Wooden pavilion over outdoor onsen bath in Japan forest.

From capsule hotels to fancy resorts, accommodation in Japan spans all budgets and travel styles. However, I highly suggest booking a ryokan   for your autumn trip to Japan.

Ryokans are traditional guest houses that offer an authentic Japanese cultural experience. Expect to find woven tatami mats in your room, a wooden soaker tub in the bath, and plush futon mats for sleeping.

When we stayed at Yuzuya Ryokan in Kyoto , we enjoyed perks like afternoon tea in our room and amazing kaiseki dinners overlooking a Japanese garden. It was an unforgettable experience!

Many ryokans also have onsen (hot spring baths), which feel incredible after a long day of leaf-peeping.

6 thoughts on “Visiting Japan in October: The Best of Autumn in Japan”

Ok this is AMAZING. I have to agree with you— I love Japan in the fall. We’ve been to Kyoto in November and it is absolutely magical with all the gorgeous foliage and delicious seasonal cuisine. Will have to visit these other destinations in autumn next time! Hokkaido looks incredible.

I’m glad we agree! Sakura season is lovely, but I think the reds and yellows of fall foliage bring out the best of Japan’s cities and landscapes.

How many days do you think are ideal for an October visit to Japan? Would 10 days be sufficient? If so, which cities and parks would you prioritize? We would likely travel from Oct 17-27. Thank you!

Great question, Vanessa! 10 days is a fantastic amount of time to spend in Japan. The leaf forecast changes every year depending on the weather, but you’ll definitely see some great colors in Hokkaido and mountainous areas like Nagano prefecture. I did my 5 day Nagano itinerary in late October and saw plenty of autumn foliage. Nikko, Sapporo, and Daisetsuzan National Park would be great as well.

Thanks so much for this wonderful article Chelsea! I visited Japan during sakura season and I have been wanting to visit Japan in fall. I have a tentative plan to have a small simple wedding ceremony in Japan next fall. Do you have any recommendations on this? I was thinking a small simple gathering in Hakone or Fuji lakes but open to more ideas. Goal is to have an intimate wedding with the beautiful fall nature background and then everyone can just enjoy being in Japan. Look forward to your thoughts!

That sounds lovely, Rachel! There are a ton of hotels and resorts in the Hakone/Fuji Five Lakes area, and I’d imagine many would be able to host your guests and do a wedding dinner. A ryokan would also be a good option if you only have a very small number of guests.

If you’re hoping for a view of Mount Fuji during the ceremony, I suggest an early morning or late afternoon ceremony, as the clouds and mid-day haze can obstruct the view. Waiting until the first week of November should give you more clear viewing conditions, as well as good fall foliage. Check out 37 Frames Instagram for some lovely Mt. Fuji wedding shots. Congrats and best of luck with the planning!

Dear Japanese

16 Mind-Blowing Things to Do in Japan in October 2024 | What To Do In Japan In October?

Planning a visit to Japan in October? Here are some fun things to do in Japan in October.

October paints Japan in a fiery palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. Crisp air entices strolls through ancient gardens ablaze with color.

Hike amidst vibrant mountains or float down a river, capturing fleeting reflections in the water’s mirror.

Immerse yourself in vibrant festivals, savor seasonal delights, and witness the country’s soul ignite under a kaleidoscope of autumn leaves. Come, wander through Japan’s enchanting October.

Things to Do in Japan in October

Attend the takayama autumn festival.

Many people wonder, when is the Takayama Festival held in Japan?

Maybe you are confused as to why I have mentioned such a question.

Well, it’s because this feast is held twice a year: once in spring (April 14th to 15th) and another in autumn (October 9th to 10th).

As it is one of Japan’s three most exciting festivals, visitors who travel in April and October don’t miss the opportunity to attend this feast.

Takayama Festival

The October one is organized by Hachiman Shrine, situated on the northern side of Takayama town.

The main attraction of this feast is dozens of decorated floats (yatai) displayed in the city’s streets. Some of these floats are adorned with sophistical mechanical dolls (Karakuri dolls) that can even dance!

Don’t even think that the dolls will start doing hip hop or locking and popping dance! But, their moves can definitely please all ages of people from young to kids.

Anyway, a portable shrine is carried around the city during the two days of celebration.

When the puppet show and the parade keep the people amused, the nighttime has a totally different charm.

After the evening, the floats are covered with bright lanterns that make them look even more beautiful.

The Takayama Autumn Festival has attractions such as processions and lion dances (shishi-mai), as pictured. The festivals, occuring in Spring and in Autumn, were registered on the UNESCO intangible cultural list in 2015. pic.twitter.com/QD58Eu5D5d — Japan House London (@japanhouseldn) October 24, 2022

Attend The Tokyo Ramen Show

My favorite type of men is Ramen!

Now don’t question my gender, and just know that I am a die-hard fan of ramen.

And, if you are like me, then the Tokyo Ramen Show is ready to satisfy your tummy with some mouth-watering ramen dishes.

Traditional ramen

It is the biggest ramen event in Japan that takes place in Komazawa Park, Tokyo. Only the finest ramen shops are qualified to present their ramen bowls at this event.

Therefore, you have the golden opportunity to taste the most delicious bowls from all over the country without traveling to the various regions.

Delicious Ramen

Another interesting fact is you can even vote for your favorite ramen here.

Anyway, this event is divided into two rounds (24th to 29th October & 30th Oct to 4th Nov), and there will be several ramen booths during each segment.

There is no entry fee required for the venue, but you have to purchase Ramen Tickets to buy the bowls. And the tickets are being sold at the event site.

Participate in Kyoto’s Festival of Ages

One of the good things about our Japan is although we are advanced in technology, we also know how to keep our culture alive for ages.

One of the examples is Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages), which has been celebrated from 1895 till this date.

Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages, 22nd Oct) is an annual re-enactment of how historical figures and commoners dressed and carried themselves in Kyoto's 1,100-year history when the city was Japan's capital. In 1868, Kyoto lost its status as Tokyo was chosen as the new capital. pic.twitter.com/1lAN5mzFcF — Kin Ho (@Kin_Ho_Photo) November 17, 2022

Every year, this feast is held on 22nd October and is one of Kyoto’s three most famous festivals, along with Gion Matsuri (in July) & Aoi Matsuri (in May).

It features a large parade that travels from the Imperial Palace to Heian Shrine. The parade participants are dressed up in costumes from every period of Japan’s history.

Hence, it’s an excellent opportunity to watch the entire historical side of Japan in one go.

Besides, you will see famous historical figures, princesses, warriors, and commoners, all represented as well.

There are around 2000 participants each year, and it will take approximately two hours to watch the full parade pass by.

I will say if you plan to stay in Kyoto in October, you may attend this feast to experience the tradition of Japan.

Attend The Kochia Carnival

One of the nice places to visit in October is Hitachi Seaside Park, situated in Ibaraki Prefecture.

Here you can see cute pom pom plants that are called “Kochia.”

From mid-September to mid-October, a popular seasonal event is held known as “Kochia Carnival.”

During this time, the Miharashi Hill in Hitachi Seaside Park is filled with 32,000 Kochia balls, creating spectacular scenery.

Kochia Carnival

Although the Kochias can also be seen on summer days when they are in fresh green color, October is a perfect time if you want to watch them in full glory with a fire-burning red color.

Another good thing is, besides Kochia, cosmos flowers are in full bloom in early to late October, and both of the fields are next to each other.

So, it seems like you have a scope of witnessing beautiful flowers and plants at the same time.

Kochia and cosmos field

But, one important fact I want to share with you is that this park is extremely popular and gets crowded on weekends. It’s because everyone, including local people, comes to see the carnival during this time.

That’s why I recommend you visit there on weekdays to avoid most crowds.

Taste The Delicacies of Hokkaido Food Festival

Autumn in Japan is the season when we Japanese people celebrate the new harvest, which is also called “Autumn’s Appetite.”

It is the best time to try out various seasonal foods in Japan. Even a number of events are arranged in October to celebrate this food feast.

Among them, the largest fiesta is the Hokkaido Food Festival. It is an outdoor event organized in the first week of October for four days in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo.

Food from Hokkaido

Wait, wait, did you get confused when I said the location is Tokyo?

Well, it’s normal because even though the feast name represents Hokkaido, it actually takes place in Tokyo.

So, I hope you won’t mix up things and end up going to Hokkaido city!!

Anyway, talking about the event, you will find over 400 delicacies that are from Hokkaido.

Japanese ramen

Hence, just like the Ramen Show, you have another opportunity of tasting another region’s signature dishes within Tokyo.

From seafood to regional Ramen, you will definitely find something that will go with your taste and preferences.

Join The Nagasaki Kunchi Feast

Organized in the city of Nagasaki, this feast dates back to 1634. The event is held from October 7th to 9th to incorporate different aspects of Europe and Chinese cultures, which have played a role in Nagasaki’s history.

The main highlight of this fiesta is the dance performances by various teams representing various city districts of Nagasaki.

These teams perform on a rotating schedule of 7 years, so the performances are always unique & fresh, even for the local spectators.

You will see various types of performances involving a dragon dance or large floats. While some dance shows are quite calm and peaceful, others get hectic and wild.

Therefore, if you are an energetic and fun-loving person, maybe the wild one will hit you. And in case you are a calm person, the peaceful one is also there for you.

Now, if this festival seems exciting, you have to purchase tickets in advance as they may get sold out several weeks before the event date.

Yet, there are some locations where you can watch freely, but note that those areas get really crowded, and you have to secure a spot in the early morning.

Watch Some Wild Men Bouncing at the Niihama Taiko Festival

I guess the title of this segment caught your attention!!

Well, why not? I think looking for something unique is the traveler’s first goal.

Therefore, when you visit Japan in October, Niihama Taiko Festival should be on your bucket list.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ?岸之下青年部公式アカウント?? (@kishinoshita_seinenbu)

It’s because, during this feast, around 150 men bounce the 2 ton heavy floats with the rhythm of taiko drums.

The celebration takes place in mid-October (16th to 18th) on Shikoku Island and consists of about 47 floats shaped like giant taiko drums.

Every year nearly 250,000 spectators gather around to support these teams and cheer for them.

Watch The Tamagawa Fireworks Festival

Who said fireworks could only be enjoyed on new year’s eve?

When you are in Japan, expect a festive mood and glittering atmosphere every season. You can watch fireworks in both summer and autumn.

Tamagawa Fireworks

In October, numerous fireworks events are held across the country, but a remarkable one is the Tamagawa Fireworks Festival.

The event date varies each year, so please check out beforehand.

During the event, about 6,000 fireworks are held along the banks of the Tama River near Futakotamagawa Station.

All these fireworks light up the sky and create a breathtaking view.

Watching fireworks

The local couples are often seen in such events, so you may consider taking your partner too.

Even it has special words associated with it, like “Koyo” which means red leaves & “Momiji-gari” meaning red leaf hunting.

Now the question is, where will you go to witness these colorful leaves, right?

Well, in October, highly recommended autumn foliage viewing locations are, Kamikochi (in Nagano), Arashiyama (in Kyoto), Nikko, Nara, and Kawaguchiko (in Fuji Five Lakes area).

Cycling Tour at Shimanami Kaido Route

No one can be sad while riding a cycle. There is an unknown pleasure when the cool breeze touches your skin. You feel wild and free at the same time.

With a bunch of your friends or even alone, you can plan a cycling tour at the Shimanami Kaido route.

Shimanami Kaido

It is one of the ideal cycling routes in Japan that attracts cyclists from around the world.

While going through this stunning route, you will cross over seven bridges, the Seto Inland Sea, and six small islands.

The good thing is that bridge tolls are all free for cyclists, and there are English signs for foreigners.

Seto Inland Sea

Although you can bring your own bike here, I suggest you rent one from the terminals situated on Shimanami Kaido.

And the rental fee is approximately 1,000 yen per day. Several types of bicycles are available, such as tandem bikes, electrical cycles, and kids’ bicycles.

So, there are suitable options for everyone, and you may also plan this tour with your family.

13 Joyful Things to Do in Japan in September

Travel to Iya Valley, A Secret Place in Tokushima!

Most travelers think Japan is all about Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka. And that’s how they miss some of the less discovered places of this country.

One such example is Iya Valley, which is situated on the island of Shikoku in the Tokushima Province.

Although it’s a remote place, trust me, your journey will be well worth it. The Iya Valley area is surrounded by mountains and equipped with several vine bridges.

Iya Valley

From October to November is the best time to explore this valley, because during this time you will see its peak beauty.

For a thrilling and adventurous feel, you can hike the bridges just like the locals do. First, head uphill and try the Oku Iya Niju Kazura double vine bridge to enjoy the breathtaking environment.

Amazing Iya Valley

Then go for the Iya Kazurabashi, which is one of the three rarest bridges in Japan. Even the most daredevil persons quake in their boots while crossing this bridge.

So, if you are a scaredy-cat, you may avoid it. Otherwise, go for it without any hesitation.

Iya Kazurabashi

However, don’t worry about the safety, because the bridge is well maintained and is rebuilt every 3 years.

Now, you obviously won’t come this far only to enjoy nature and outdoor activities, right?

Well, in such a case, a visit to Hotel Iya onsen is gonna fulfill your heart’s lust. You can take a 5 minutes cable car tour to this hotel and take a glimpse of the spectacular autumn colors of the valley.

Iya Valley Japan

In the onsen, you will surely find the utter serenity of an open-air bath with the flowing river alongside.

Nothing but the sound of wind crinkling in the trees and the singing of birds will keep your mind calm.

Drop By The Lake Daigenta

Another top place in Japan to travel in October is Lake Daigenta, situated near the Yuzawa Ski Park in Niigata.

Here, you will be able to see colorful autumn leaves reflected on the lake’s pristine surface.

Lake Daigenta

This area also offers hiking, taking a boat ride, and camping opportunities. As there are several campsites in this place, you don’t have to worry about any inconvenience.

Visit Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido

Hokkaido’s Daisetsuzan National Park is one of the most beautiful sights in Japan. Luckily, this area hits its peak charm in early October.

As this park is huge, I suggest you explore it by joining a ropeway tour.

Daisetsuzan National Park

There is also a hot spring resort named Asahidake Onsen that is located at the bottom of Mt Asahidake. Here you can enjoy the relaxing bath as well as the greenery view of the outside.

Alright, by far, I have given a guide on what to do in Japan in October.

However, you need to learn about some other things associated with October, such as weather conditions, costs, and crowd.

And that’s what I am gonna discuss from now on.

Japan’s Weather in October 2024

The weather in Japan in October is kinda warm but not too hot. Rainfall is very low this month throughout the country, making October one of the best months to visit Japan.

Look at the following chart to learn the average temperature in Japan in October.

As you can see, major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Kyoto have warmer days, but the nighttime temperature drops low.

In Sapporo (capital of Hokkaido), the temperature is much cooler than in the other regions.

However, Okinawa still remains hot in October but not as heated as in July or August.

But, without any doubt, the overall weather is suitable for traveling. If you prefer moderate temperature and a dry environment, October is an excellent time to plan your trip to Japan.

What to Wear in Japan in October?

While going to Japan in October, you need to be prepared with both light and warm clothes.

As you already know, the temperature drops during the morning and evening, you have to pack accordingly.

So, here’s a list of basic things you will need.

  • Lightweight cotton tops.
  • Long-sleeved shirts.
  • Light jackets or sweaters.
  • Long pants or skirts.
  • Rainproof jacket or umbrella.
  • Woolen light scarf.
  • Light gloves.
  • Comfy closed shoes and socks.
  • Heavier jacket (required while going to Hokkaido or the mountain area).
  • Hiking boots (if you want to go hiking).

Besides the clothes, don’t forget your travel document, mobile charger, power bank, camera, mini first aid kit, travel size backpack, toothbrush, and necessary skincare product.

Crowd and Cost in Japan in October

Because of the pleasant weather in October, foreign visitors come to Japan during this time.

Also, the arrival of the autumn season makes this month more special.

Especially in Hokkaido, Tohoku region, and mountain areas, the atmosphere is suitable, and the nature is breathtaking during October.

In fact, anywhere you can see the fall foliage will get busy with visitors.

Moreover, the regions like Tokyo and Kyoto are always crowded because these cities are filled with loads of attractions.

In late October, Kyoto sees more travelers because of the Jidai Festival, and that’s why hotel prices get a bit higher than usual.

Thus, I suggest you book your accommodation in advance for your good.

Anyway, if you are afraid of the crowd, I want to clarify something.

Firstly, festivals are all about gathering and celebrating, so you should not bother with this situation.

On the other hand, the crowd in Japanese tourist places is not over the top, and you can always enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Seasonal food at this time of year are persimmons.

Things to Do in Japan in October

October is one of the most pleasant months to discover Japan, in regards to the weather. There are no national holiday weeks, and the Japanese people stay home or at school to study. Schools and universities enjoy this month to organize sporting events. Fall is right around the corner, and it starts from the northern part of Japan flowing to the south.

Tourism statistics

Tourism attendance is pretty high, close to the levels in April . Just like for the spring   🌸 vacation, the European fall school vacation times are when Japan sees an increase in the number of tourists for approximately two weeks, which is shorter than the summer break. Therefore, we recommend travelers to book in advance for accommodation and activities in popular cities, such as Kyoto and Hiroshima .

Note that during this season, traditional lodging , such as ryokan with onsen   ♨️ (hot spring waters), are also rare, as Japanese or foreign tourists love to benefit from the unique ambiance in the mountain towns.

Climate and weather

Japan’s October weather is ideal for visiting. While morning temperatures may be a little chilly with the arrival of fall, the day is partly sunny with warm, beautiful light. Rainy  ☔️ days become scarce, moving aside for drier weather without clouds, ideal for enjoying family days out in the cities or countryside.

In Honshu’s heart, visitors can still experience temperatures up to 20 °C, while the island of Hokkaido will have some morning temperatures below 10 °C. Southern parts of Japan enjoy a gorgeous Indian summer, including Okinawa where the heat still allows for bathing in the ocean, despite a quite high humidity rate. As a general rule, the sun rises at approximately 6 a.m. and sets between 5 – 5:45 p.m., depending on the region.

National public holidays

As a general rule, one unique public holiday is not worked in October:

  • Second Monday of October -- 体育の日 Taiiku no Hi , Undô-kai, Health and Sports Day

Top things to do

The number of matsuri (festivals) is diminished compared to summertime; however, each city celebrates the gradual changing of the seasons. The last bit of heat allows visitors to enjoy the leaves changing colors, as well as days out in parks and gardens.

Below is a list of Japanese seasonal attractions and events in October:

Travel packing tips

Mid-season clothes are wise for October, when temperatures greatly vary between the day and when the sun sets in the evening. Therefore, it is preferable to layer several clothes that can be removed according to the temperature. Cotton pants and long-sleeved shirts are perfect for this period, as well as a windproof vest for hiking .

Shoes should be comfortable and waterproof for a good walk, along with an urban pair of shoes for evening in the cities. It is still too early for winter boots.

In October, the temperature difference between the north and south is quite extreme. Sometimes it snows in the northern areas of Hokkaido. 3. Seasonal Foods

Seasonal Foods

Since October is the harvest season, there are many kinds of seasonal foods. Here are some examples of seasonal food you should try in October.

4. Events and What to See

1- food festivals.

Food Festivals

Food festivals are one of the most prominent and delicious types of October activities in Japan. October is harvest season, so it’s a great season for eating. There’s a popular Japanese phrase “Autumn’s Appetite” or 食欲の秋 ( shokuyoku no aki ).

Many food festivals are held throughout Japan to celebrate the new harvest. There are many kinds of food festivals. For example, Ramen Show is one of the most popular food festivals. There are also beer festivals, oyster festivals, BBQ festivals, and so on.

Octoberfest

Also, Oktoberfest, originally held in Germany, is becoming popular in Japan. If you’re a great beer drinker, Oktoberfest is a perfect event for you. You can enjoy drinking German beer with delicious German food such as sausages. There’s a big Oktoberfest held in Sapporo, which is a sister city of Munich, Germany, where the biggest Oktoberfest in Germany is held.

Hokkaido Food Festival in Tokyo

Hokkaido Food Festival In Tokyo

Although there aren’t many farms in Tokyo, many fresh and delicious foods are brought together here from all over Japan, and various food events are held in Tokyo.

One of the most popular food events in October is Hokkaido Food Festivals in Yoyogi Park. There are about 100 food stalls and about 400-thousand people visit each year. You can enjoy various Hokkaido foods, such as ramen noodles, fresh seafood, fresh vegetables, and meat. You can also try local craft beer, too. It’s usually held for four days, and in 2018 it’ll be from October 5 to 8.

2- Autumn Leaves

Autum Leaves

In October, trees start to turn red and yellow in northern areas such as Hokkaido and Tohoku. Since more than 70% of Japan’s land is mountains, autumn leaves are quite a special autumn feature.

The view is beautiful and amazing. We recommend going to see autumn leaves, especially if you don’t have autumn leaves around where you live. The peak season of each area is very short, so the more popular spots tend to be very crowded. Some mountains have only one or two roads leading to viewing sites, so it might be better to visit on a weekday if it’s possible.

Here’s a list of some of the best places to see fall colors in Japan:

  • 定山渓 ( Jōzankei ) in Hokkaido
  • 洞爺湖 ( Tōyako ) or Toya Lake in Hokkaido
  • 弘前公園 ( Hirosaki kōen ) or Hirosaki Park in Aomori
  • 抱返り渓谷 ( Dakikaeri keikoku ) in Akita

Toya Lake is a famous hot spring spot and you can also enjoy fireworks every night here around the end of October.

In Kanto areas, including Tokyo and south of the Kanto area, the peak of autumn leaves is in November. However, you still have a chance to see these color-changing beauties in more mountainous areas. For example, the peak season of 日光ひろは坂 ( Nikkō hirohaa zaka ) in Tochigi is around the middle of October.

3- Unique Autumn Festivals

Some of the most exciting events in October are autumn festivals. Many unique autumn festivals are held throughout Japan. At these festivals, you can see Japanese traditions such as dances and sports. If you use SNS and want to take unique photos of Japan, these festivals are great photo opportunities.

Here are some recommended festivals in October.

Kawagoe Festival or 川越祭 ( Kawagoe Matsuri )

Kawagoe Festival

Third weekend in October Kawagoe-shi, Saitama

The Kawagoe Festival is an annual festival of Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine. It’s registered as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The most attractive event of the festival is 曳っかわせ( hikkawase ). People draw magnificent floats or 山車 ( dashi ) face each other and compete for traditional 囃子 ( hayashi ) dance, flute, and voice performances. Kawagoe is just outside of Tokyo, so if you visit Tokyo on this day, the festival might be one of the most exciting options for you. The hon-matsuri , which means “full festival” is held only once every two years.

Kurama Fire Festival or 鞍馬の火祭 ( Kurama no Himatsuri )

Kurama Fire Festival

This is a very old festival which originated in the 10th century during the Heian period. Hundreds of people with flaming torches illuminate the mountain of Kurama and parade with 神輿 ( mikoshi ) or a portable shrine. The largest torches are as heavy as 100 kilograms or 220 pounds. It’s a very dynamic and exciting festival.

Nagasaki Kunchi is an annual festival of Suwa Shrine and is also registered as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It’s an old festival with a history of about 400 years. In the period of national isolation in the Edo era, the port of Nagasaki was a trading hub. Therefore, Nagasaki has a unique culture influenced by Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese. During this festival, people draw colorfully painted festival cars and perform music and dances. There are also Chinese-influenced dragon dances and western-style ship-shaped festival cars.

Halloween on October 31

The celebration of Halloween is relatively new in Japan and it has become bigger and bigger over the past two decades. However, Japanese Halloween isn’t like a traditional Halloween party in western culture, and trick-or-treating isn’t popular in Japan.

Halloween is more like a big cosplay party, and for many Japanese people, it’s a chance to wear unique costumes once a year. People dress up and go to parades held in the city or events held at nightclubs or theme parks. The downtown areas of big cities become crowded with costumed people. The biggest Halloween parade is held in Shibuya, Tokyo.

There are people wearing horrible costumes, such as witches, ghosts, and zombies. However, for Japanese people, the meaning of Halloween isn’t very important and many people wear fun costumes instead, such as characters of comics or animes. So if you enjoy Japanese animes, we’re going to bet that you’ll really enjoy the Japanese Halloween celebration.

October sees more travelers in Japan compared with September due to the favorable dry weather and cool-to-warm temperatures.

In late October, the leaf-viewing spots usually become crowded during the weekends. Instead, visiting them on weekdays is helpful for a better experience.

Likewise, prices go up slightly, but they are still lower than in cherry blossom season (March to May).

What to Pack

In general, Japan stays warm and sunny during the day, but gets cool or cold in the early morning and evening.

Thus, light autumn clothes are fine for the day, such as thin pullovers, light trousers and modest, long-sleeve dresses. Meanwhile, taking a warm jacket, sweaters, and other heat-trapping layers is suggested for the colder times.

Why visit japan in october.

Scenery of autumn leaves of Oku Saga in Kyoto City in Japan in October.

October is a very vibrant time in Japan, with many long-running festivals that are only improved by the arrival of the phenomenal autumn colors. Read on to see all the best reasons for visiting Japan this month.

  • Better rates: Flying to Japan in October means you’ll pay less for your trip than if you travel in the busy summer or winter periods.
  • Autumnal foliage: Enjoy the slow transformation of Japan’s breathtaking natural landscape as fall embraces the islands. A great place to witness the changing of the seasons is the spectacular northern island of Hokkaido, where autumn arrives sooner.
  • Fairs and festivals: If you want to experience traditional performances, visit Kyoto’s famous Jidai Matsuri. The best native foods can be sampled at the Hokkaido Food Fair.

Where to go and what to do

The pic of Japanese open air hot onsen.

Nature lovers can best immerse themselves in the shifting autumnal tones of rural Japan by visiting Hokkaido. The hiking trails of Mount Asahi at Daisetsuzan National Park weave through the undisturbed terrain as local fauna scurries through ruby-red leaves. The dazzling fall colors of Japan’s main island, Honshu, stand out against the backdrop of a thousand traditional torii gates around the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Closely packed together, these orange-red Shinto gates lead you on a journey through the leaf-covered hilly trails as they inspire you to contemplate their ancient spiritual significance.

Visit Tokyo as it shows off the best of Japan’s cuisine with two delectable food festivals in October. The Hokkaido Food Fair in Yoyogi Park features a hundred stalls selling countless delicious artisan dishes and drinks from the different regions of Hokkaido. Anyone wishing to try one of Japan’s most convenient dishes, the iconic ramen noodles, should visit the Tokyo Ramen Show that takes place towards the end of October. This event celebrates the rise of ramen as the nation’s favorite instant meal with a large choice of vendors who all sell the noodles with their own special regional twists.

If there is one event in October that truly shines a light on the rich tapestry of Japanese history and culture, it’s the Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) in Kyoto. Widely considered as one of Japan’s biggest festivals, which occurs each year on October 22nd, the highlight of the day is an epic five-hour-long procession that features over 2,000 performers in hand-crafted traditional regional outfits that march from Kyoto Imperial Palace to the Heian Shrine. In Nagasaki, meanwhile, an immense party atmosphere takes hold of the city earlier in the month to celebrate the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival. The event focuses on elaborately carved and decorated wooden boats that are paraded around the city by representatives from each neighborhood.

As the weather cools down, the natural hot springs dotted around Japan can be very inviting to weary travelers who want a warm spot to sit and relax. Hakone is a famous onsen (hot spring) town near Tokyo that promises a hundred different onsen facilities where you can unwind in the comfortable water with a perfect view over the nearby Mount Fuji .

What to bring

Row of yellow ginkgo tree in autumn in Japan.

Japan still has warm, sunny days in October, so definitely bring some light daytime sightseeing outfits. That being said, the temperatures can drastically drop in the evenings and plenty of warm layers are recommended. The typhoon season may still be ongoing, so you should remember to pack a waterproof coat.

As greens fade to yellows and reds, Japan comes alive under the low October sun. Feel free to chat with our travel experts to get a customized itinerary for your Japan trip .

Best Time to Visit Japan: When to Go & When to Avoid!

Home » Blog » Travel Tips » Best Time to Visit Japan: When to Go & When to Avoid!

Choosing the best time of year to visit Japan can be downright overwhelming. Each of Japan’s 4 distinct seasons has its draws and drawbacks (some more than others!). We’re going to break down exactly what to expect during winter, spring, summer, and fall so you can choose the best time to visit Japan based on your travel style and interests.

This is Japan in August… can you feel the humidity just by looking at the picture?! Because I sure can!

Japan has four distinct seasons: You’ve got the famed cherry blossoms in the spring, festivals in the summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and powdery snow come wintertime.

So this begs the question:

What time of year is best to visit Japan?

In short, you’ll have the best chance of comfortable weather and fewer crowds in early spring (March – early April) and in autumn (late October – November). Our personal pick would be to visit Japan during November; but more on that later…

Dotonbori neighborhood Osaka Japan

Let me backup… Truthfully there is no correct answer, as each season has its own unique draws (and drawbacks too).

But we’re not going to just leave ya there, hangin’.

We’re going to go over the pros and cons of visiting Japan during each season to help you decide which time of year is ideal for YOU.

Just staying in Tokyo? We have another article about the best time to visit Tokyo , specifically!

Answer these questions to get started:

  • Do you mind hot weather?
  • What about cold weather?
  • Are you easily bothered by crowds?
  • How much of your time do you want to spend outdoors?

We visited Japan in summer, fall & winter

best Japanese cuisine

When: mid-August (2019)

Our experience:

  • Very hot and humid in most places
  • Lots of Japanese tourists and international travelers in the popular places
  • We had a few days of typhoon weather
  • Mount Fuji wasn’t on our route, but she was only visible for a handful of days of our trip, due to clouds.
  • Felt too hot to be able to enjoy onsens as much as other times of the year

Would we recommend visiting Japan in August?

It wouldn’t be my top recommendation, honestly. I found it very hot and muggy, and I would much prefer visiting when the temps are more comfortable.

Autumn in Japan momiji

When: mid-November (2023)

  • Comfortable temperatures and no humidity
  • Colorful foliage in some areas (it differs quite a bit throughout the country)
  • During our 3-week trip, we had a little light rain , but not much
  • Clear views of Mount Fuji
  • Perfect weather for soaking in onsen
  • Crowds in popular areas for foliage viewing, but nothing overwhelming

Would we recommend visiting Japan in November?

Absolutely! Autumn is perhaps my all time favorite time to travel anywhere — and Japan is no different. I think autumn will always be my favorite time to visit Japan!

Things To Do in Japan | Two Wandering Soles

When: early February (2015)

  • Mild winter temperatures (we’re used to very cold winters, and this wasn’t bad for us)
  • Snow in the mountains was magical
  • Even though winter is said to be the best time to view Mount Fuji , she was covered in fog when we visited
  • Onsens were very enjoyable (we had a private outdoor onsen while it was snowing, which was amazing!)
  • Obviously the cities are still busy (because they’re highly populated), but the amount of tourists was lower than other seasons
  • Good deals on accommodation since it was outside of peak season
  • We saw a few plum blossoms in Tokyo that were blooming early, which was a pleasant surprise!

Would we recommend visiting Japan in February?  Yes! I think winter is one of the best times to visit Japan and it’s very underrated. Next time we visit in the winter, I want to add more outdoor onsens and a snowboarding trip in the legendary Japanese powder!

Things to do in Japan Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

While not a large country exactly, Japan spreads more than 1,800 miles (2,900+ kilometers) north to south, from the island of Hokkaido in the northeast all the way down to the island of Okinawa in the southwest.

A distance that large means the weather from north to south varies quite a lot. Hokkaido can be freezing while the subtropical island of Okinawa can be experiencing a beach day.

For the purpose of this article, we’ll mostly be discussing the weather on the island of Honshu.

Located in the middle of the country, Honshu is where Tokyo , Osaka and Kyoto are all located, and is where most international travelers will start and end their trip, especially if it is your first time in Japan .

Another thing to take into consideration is that Japan is a very mountainous country. Common sense tells us that when you venture to higher elevations, you’ll find colder temperatures.

Fun Example: We went up into the Japanese Alps in August and found a drastic temperature swing: 95°F (35°C) at sea level to 65°F (18°C) in the mountains. This same area has snow until as late as early July. Crazy, huh?!

Psst! If you’ll be traveling more throughout the country, be sure to check out our bucket list of crazy fun things to do in Japan !

Fun Facts about Japan Okunion Cemetery Koyasan

Let’s chat about the sun, the snow, the rain, and those dreaded typhoons. We’ll go over what type of weather you should expect throughout the year and describe our experience with a typhoon.

We’re also going over some important information if you are interested in viewing Mount Fuji.

Spoiler alert: You won’t be able to see this iconic mountain for much of the year.

Stats on Japan weather & seasons:

  • Hottest month in Japan: August (average 80°F/41°C)
  • Coldest month in Japan: January (41°F/5°C)
  • Rainiest months in Japan: June and September
  • Driest months in Japan: December and January
  • Most crowded month in Japan: late April – early May (aka “Golden Week”, explained in the section about Spring )
  • Least crowded months in Japan: January – early March are the least popular times to visit, which can mean cheaper prices and less crowds
Note: Again, these stats are for the central island of Honshu. If you are planning to visit the northernmost island of Hokkaido, or Okinawa in the very south, be sure to look up their specific weather, as they vary from the rest of the county.

Rainy season in Japan: Early Summer

Best Time to Visit Japan Rainy Season

The majority of the country experiences a rainy season from June through mid-July.

The good news is that during the rainy season, there’s a roughly 45% chance of precipitation each day (data from Tokyo), meaning you’ll have some dry days too! Some of those rainy days will be heavy, while others will be sunny before or after the rain.

Interesting Fact: Tokyo is one of the rainiest big cities on earth! In fact, it has more than double the amount of annual rainfall as London. Say whaaaat?!

Despite rain, you’ll find life goes on as usual in Japan, as locals are used to it. Do as the Japanese do and buy an umbrella to stay dry!

Typhoon season in Japan: Late Summer

Late May through October is known as typhoon season in Japan, with the majority of typhoons occurring in August and September. Data from the last 30 years show that an average of 11 typhoons approach the coast per year.

What is a typhoon?

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone. They are formed in the same way a hurricane forms, and the only real difference is the location at which they occur .

What is a typhoon like in Japan?

We visited Japan during the month of August, which as you now know is the peak of typhoon season. And one typhoon made landfall during our visit.

So how bad was it, really?

This was our experience:

The entire day leading up to the typhoon was sunny with blue skies, and we both had this feeling that it wouldn’t be that bad.

But everyone was talking about it and how strong it would supposedly be. There was talk about trains shutting down, and we had a food tour cancel on us because restaurants were closing up shop.

But it’s beautiful outside, we thought naively. We put on rain jackets, grabbed our one umbrella and headed into town just as a drizzle began to start.

Soon, the winds increased and the rain started really coming down. But the trains still ran, and we decided to go catch a movie. By the time we got out of the show, the streets were mostly empty and the rain was really pounding, so despite our umbrella and rain jackets, we got completely soaked.

By the next morning, blue skies started peeking out from behind clouds and by the afternoon you would never know what had happened the previous night.

What to expect: Heavy rainfall and high winds, canceled and/or delayed trains, canceled tours. In some cases, it may only interrupt a day or two, and in others it might have longer-lasting effects. You should expect some plans to change since Japanese people take typhoons very seriously.

Best time of year to view Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji Japan

Many visitors to Japan will want to glimpse the country’s most famous mountain, and for good reason — it’s absolutely stunning, and seeing Mount Fuji in person will be one of the highlights of your trip. That is, if you see her .

One thing many first-time visitors to Japan may not realize (ourselves included) is that Mount Fuji is notoriously shy. This means there is much of the year where your chances of seeing her are rare. Instead, this shy mountain will stay cloaked behind clouds and haze, only occasionally peeking through.

So what time of year will you have the best chance of seeing Mount Fuji?

  • Best chances of seeing Mount Fuji: Based on data from years past, you will have the highest chance of seeing Mount Fuji between the months of November and February.
  • Worst chances of seeing Mount Fuji: Alternatively, between April and August, you will have a slim chance of glimpsing this iconic mountain.

That said, nothing is promised when it comes to weather.

We visited Japan for the first time during early February, when we should have had a good chance of seeing Fuji. We spent the night in Hakone and bought the (not so cheap!) Hakone Day Pass to get close to the mountain, yet we only saw WHITE FRICKIN’ CLOUDS.

Best Time to Visit Japan Viewing Mount Fuji

And on the other hand, we’ve known people who have seen Fuji peek out during July and August, supposedly bad months for viewing the mountain.

But if you’re looking to get that iconic shot of a clear sky day and the mountain towering in the background in her famous symmetrical grandeur, late autumn through early spring will be your best bet at capturing this sight.

Psst! Check out our list of the most beautiful places in Japan you’ll have to see to believe!

Japan’s seasons at a glance

Japan has 4 distinct seasons: The winter is cold and the summer is hot. If either of those would bother you, it’s easy to eliminate a season right off the bat.

Spring is famously known for stunning displays of cherry blossoms around the country . But when we say famous, we mean it. Japan gets very busy this time of year with domestic and international travelers, so if crowds bother you, this is another easy elimination.

Fall comes with spectacular autumn foliage , and while not as crowded as cherry blossom season, it’s not an unpopular time to travel.

Jump to the season you’re interested in to read more about what to expect:

Winter in Japan

Spring in japan, summer in japan.

  • Autumn in Japan

We’re going to go over what to expect during each season in detail so you can better plan your trip to Japan.

But before we dive in…

Did you know there are 72 “seasons” in Japan?

The traditional Japanese calendar was split up into 24 sections, and each of those were further divided into 3 subsections, creating 72 “micro seasons” .

These micro-seasons last 5 days, and the names of some of them are poetic:

  • Frogs start singing (May 5th – 9th)
  • Great rains sometimes fall (August 3rd – 7th)
  • Dew glistens white on grass (September 8th – 12th)
  • Insects hole up underground (September 28th – October 2nd)
  • Maple leaves and ivy turn yellow (November 2nd – 6th)

While this isn’t necessarily something people go by in modern times, it’s a good reminder that the weather and atmosphere changes very often in Japan and it’s important to be prepared for it all.

Best Time to Visit Japan Winter in Japan

During the winter months, major cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto tend to enjoy mild temperatures, but you can find snow and colder temps in the mountains and on Hokkaido (the northernmost island in Japan).

Crowds tend to be fewer during the winter season, except for at the ski resorts where outdoor enthusiasts will be spoiled with some of the best powder in the world.

Winter comes with sunshine and blue skies that are statistically the clearest they’ll be all year long.

While winter may not be the first season you think of traveling, there’s actually a ton to do, and we think it is a great time to visit Japan .

  • When is winter in Japan?  December – February
  • Typical weather in Japan during the winter:  Dry, cold, & sunny
  • Average winter temperatures:  35 ° F – 55 ° F (Tokyo) (2 ° C – 13 ° C)
  • least crowded season, great for visiting Japan’s iconic landmarks
  • Japan has great snow for skiing and snowboarding
  • great time for onsens, snow monkeys and seeing scenic landscapes & villages dusted in snow
  • cold weather, averaging around 43°F (6°C)
  • some outdoor activities, like hiking and biking may be more difficult in the winter

Winter months at a glance

  • December:  Third coldest month of the year, lots of Bonenkai (“forget the year”) parties and celebrations. Ski season begins in Sapporo.
  • January:  Coldest month of the year, clear and sunny skies, snowy in the northern part of the country, best month for skiing and winter activities.
  • February:  Second coldest month of the year, still great for skiing in the mountains, yet you can start seeing spring plum blossoms further south in the country.

Best things to do in the winter in Japan

Best Time to Visit Japan Snow Monkey Hot Spring

We have a huge list of all the best things to do during winter in Japan , but here are some highlights:

  • Go skiing or snowboarding
  • Visit traditional villages like Shirakawa-go , which is stunning after a fresh show
  • Go to the Sapporo Snow Festival (held for one week in February)
  • Soak in an onsen (natural hot spring)
  • Fill your belly with hot ramen noodle soup
  • See “snow monkeys” at Jigokudani Monkey Park
  • View Mount Fuji
  • Photograph famous sights with a blanket of snow
  • Check out some of Tokyo’s best activities that take place indoors

Best times and places to ski in Japan

  • Sapporo:  December – March
  • Nagano:  January – February

Winter is the best season to travel to Japan if…

  • …you don’t mind colder temperatures
  • …you want to ski or snowboard
  • …you want to avoid the crowds
  • …you want to save money and travel during off-peak season

What to pack for winter in Japan

  • Lots of layers, including a versatile jacket, gloves and a hat
  • Warm and comfortable footwear and socks
  • Sunglasses (remember, this season has the sunniest days!)
  • Hand warmers (you can buy these pretty much everywhere in Japan)
  • Ski gear (if needed)

Nakasendo Japan

With stunning  sakura  (cherry blossoms) popping up all around the country and temperatures warming, it should come as no surprise that spring is a popular time to visit Japan. A  very  popular time, indeed.

If you travel to Japan in the spring, you’ll be rewarded with comfortable temperatures, beautiful blossoms, and  crowds .

  • When is spring in Japan?  From March – May
  • Typical weather in Japan during the spring:  Nice during the day, but chilly at night. Mostly sunny days with a more showers near the end of May.
  • Average spring temperatures:  40 ° F – 70 ° F (Tokyo) (4 ° C – 21 ° C)
  • comfortable temperatures
  • beautiful cherry blossoms
  • crowded (make travel plans far in advance!)
  • things may be more expensive since it is peak season

What is Golden Week in Japan?

“Golden Week” is a series of four national holidays that all fall within the same week from April 29th – May 5th every year.

  • April 29, Showa Day:  birthday of Emperor Showa, who ruled the country during World War II.
  • May 3, Constitution Day ( Kenpo kinenbi ):  called  ,  this is the celebration of the Japanese constitution ratification in 1947.
  • May 4, Green Day ( Midori no hi ):  similar to Earth Day, this holiday honors the environment.
  • Pssst! For everyone else out there wondering why they don’t include young girls in this, there is a “Girls’ Festival” (Hina Matsuri) on March 3rd.

Many Japanese people have holiday from work during this time, so it is a popular time to travel for both international and domestic visitors.

If your trip falls during these dates (or even a bit before and after), you’ll have the unique opportunity to see some celebrations and mingle with lots of Japanese travelers.

But be warned, you should start booking your accommodation well in advance because rooms sell out in popular places, like Kyoto, for example. You’ll also want to reserve seats on trains ahead of your trip, otherwise you’ll be out of luck.

Should you avoid visiting during Golden Week in Japan?

I’m going to be honest, I don’t think we would travel to Japan during Golden Week because of the insane crowds.

If you want to see Cherry Blossom but aren’t excited about the prospect of crowds, we’d urge you to avoid Golden Week, and instead travel to Japan during early March.

When and where can you see cherry blossoms?

Best Time to Visit Japan Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossoms are only in bloom for roughly one week per location. They bloom at different times throughout the country, so if you want to extend the length of time you can view them, it’s best to travel south to north so you can see them for a longer period of time.

We have an entire guide to how you can see the cherry blossoms during Spring in Japan , but in short, here are some of the best times to go:

  • Fukuoka: Late March – Early April
  • Hiroshima: Late March – Early April
  • Kyoto: First Week of April (very popular)
  • Osaka: First Week of April (very popular)
  • Tokyo: Late March – Early April (very popular)
  • Kanazawa: 1st – 2nd week in April
  • Matsumoto: 2nd- 3rd week in April
  • Sapporo: Late April – Early May

Spring months at a glance

Shirakawa-go Japan

  • March:  Temperatures are still cool, but it noticeably warms throughout the month. Skiing season in the mountains is starting to wind down, and toward the end of the month the first cherry blossoms start to reveal themselves.
  • April:  This is the prime month for cherry blossom viewing, though many Japanese people have a whole week off from work (Golden Week), so most major cherry blossom sites will be incredibly crowded.
  • May:  Very nice weather during the month of May — warm temperatures and sunny skies. Though it is technically the start of typhoon season, strong storms are very rare during the month of May.

Best things to do in the spring in Japan

  • Head to Kyoto to photograph sakura (aka cherry blossoms) of course!
  • Catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji
  • Try some interesting new foods in Japan
  • Take a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima to check out some of the city’s super important historical sites

Spring is the best season to travel if…

  • …you don’t mind crowds
  • …you want comfortable temperatures (not too cold or too hot)
  • …you want to see the famous cherry blossoms
  • …you can make your bookings well in advance
  • …you don’t mind paying a bit more for hotels and tours during peak season

What to pack for spring in Japan

  • Thicker layers if traveling in March
  • Light jacket for April and May
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hiking attire if you plan to hit the trails

Best Time to Visit Japan Summer in Japan Swimming

Summer in Japan is the time for festivals and celebrations. The summer spans from June to August, with August being the busiest travel month because school is out and many Japanese people travel over the Obon holiday (August 13-15).

(Unlucky for us, we unknowingly decided to visit Japan for our second time in August…whoops!)

Be prepare on ways to beat the humidity because it can get pretty sticky. Also it’s rainy season and the start of typhoon season, so don’t forget your rain jacket and umbrella

  • When is summer in Japan?  June – August
  • Typical weather in Japan during the summer:  Hot, humid, sticky, and rainy. But not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
  • Average summer temperatures:  70 ° F – 90 ° F (Tokyo) (21 ° C – 32 ° C)
  • Festivals throughout the country during the summer months
  • Prime season for outdoor activities like hiking
  • great time to try scuba diving in Japan
  • can get very humid
  • rain is common at the beginning of summer (June – mid-July), and typhoons are common at the end of summer (August – September)

How bad is the heat in summer, really?

Best Time to Visit Japan Summer in Japan Hiking

Over the last few years, I’ve realized I don’t handle extreme heat very well. I get tired and crabby much more quickly in the heat. Needless to say, I was very nervous about traveling to Japan during August — the hottest month of the year!

So what was it like?

Well, it did get pretty hot, like 98°F hot (37°C). And it did rain on us a few times but typically it would only last for 20-30 minutes and the rain would stop.

Some days were worse than others. After a rain, for example, it was actually pretty comfortable.

We’ve heard that summer in Tokyo is similar to summer in NYC, hot and humid. And Osaka in summer is similar to Washington D.C. in the summer, which is even more hot and humid.

Knowing what to expect is half the battle , and this way you can prepare yourself for it.

All of our accommodation (even in tiny villages) had strong AC, so we never had an issue with being comfortable at night.

Summer months at a glance

  • June:  The beginning of the month is quite nice, comparable to the weather in May. However,  tsuyu  (rainy season) starts around mid-June and last for about a month. It’s not rainy all day but there is a June gloom feeling that hangs around. Temperatures get warmer and the humidity increases as the month progresses.
  • July:  Starts out rainy because of  tsuyu  (rainy season), this only lasts until mid-July. Temperatures and humidity continue to rise as this is typically the second hottest month of the year. Great time to see festivals including Kyoto famous Gion Matsuri festival.
  • August:  The hottest month of the year in Japan. August is a good time to venture into the mountains to escape the heat. Many Japanese have August 13th-15th off because of Obon holiday, so try to avoid this time because it can get busy.

Best things to do in the summer in Japan

Best Time to Visit Japan Summer in Japan

We have another guide to things to do during summer in Japan , but here are some top recommendations:

  • Check out Tokyo’s digital art museum on a day that’s too hot or rainy to be outside
  • Enjoy festivals including Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri
  • Go hiking through the Japanese Alps or venture up to Hokkaido
  • Scuba diving (apparently the diving is actually really good in Japan!)
  • Head to the beach
  • Watch a baseball game
Ever thought of going  scuba diving in Japan ?  Being an island nation, the diving in Japan is actually quite good, and being an off the radar scuba destinations means less crowded dive sites! If you are visiting Japan in the summer time, you’ll have the best conditions for diving all over the country.

Summer is the best season to travel if…

  • …you don’t mind humidity and a bit of rain
  • …you like outdoor activities like hiking and biking
  • …you want to experience cultural festivals

What to pack for summer in Japan

  • Anti-chafing cream
  • Hand-held fan (you can buy these all over and they make a nice Japanese souvenir )
  • Deodorant, finding quality deodorant in Japan is very difficult (we switched to natural deodorant several years ago and will never go back!)
  • Light, loose clothing that wicks sweat
  • Umbrella for rain and shade

Fall in Japan

With typhoon season peaking at the beginning of September, the start of fall in Japan is typically rainy depending on where you are. However, the weather starts to clear up in October and by November the leaves are changing.

We visited Japan in November 2023 and put together this guide to autumn in Japan that’s full of useful info.

  • When is autumn in Japan?  September – November
  • Typical weather in Japan during the autumn:  Rainy in September and beginning of October because of typhoon season
  • Average autumn temperatures:  50 ° F – 80 ° F (Tokyo) (10 ° C – 27 ° C)
  • nice temperatures
  • beautiful fall foliage in countryside
  • September can be a pretty humid and rainy month, but it starts to get better in October

When can you see fall foliage in Japan?

The colorful leaves peak a bit later than other places in the Northern Hemisphere, like North America and Europe. The best display of autumn colors can typically be seen toward the end of November and even through the beginning of December.

You can find past and current reports of fall foliage here .

Autumn months at a glance

  • September:  peak of typhoon season in the southern prefectures, there can be airport and train delays. But it is the month with the least amount of visitors so it will be less busy.
  • October:  rainy in the beginning of the month but the temperatures start to drop making going outside more manageable.
  • November:  cool, crisp and dry time of year. Autumn foliage peaks near the end of November

Best things to do during the fall in Japan

Nara Japan

  • Hike the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail
  • Sneak some views of Mount Fuji
  • See the fall foliage on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
  • Eat sweet treats like deep fried maple leaves in Minoo Park
  • Travel to Osaka for leaf peeping in the parks

Autumn is the best season to travel if…

  • …you are seeking comfortable temperatures
  • …you would like to see (and photograph!) fall foliage
  • …you want to explore the major cities
  • …you like to avoid crowds
  • …you enjoy cool and crisp air

What to pack for fall  in Japan

  • Umbrella just in case it rains
  • Light jacket for November

In our opinion…

Us wearing Yakata that was provided by our guesthouse.

We’ve traveled to Japan in both the summer and the wintertime, and each had its own pros and cons.

Summer was hot and humid—like really humid—so we found ourselves sweating through our shirts daily. But we’ve been in hot and humid climates before, so honestly, it wasn’t anything we hadn’t dealt with before. But still, it wasn’t all that pleasant, and it wouldn’t be our season of choice.

The wintertime was picturesque in the countryside where the snow stuck to the ground. And in the big cities, we actually got many sunny, blue sky days which was a surprise. The cold temperatures made it fun to pop into cozy noodle shops or soak in hot onsens, whereas those activities were not quite so pleasant in the August heat.

We preferred winter over summer, because the crowds were fewer and we’re accustomed to cold weather, so we found it to be quite mild actually.

However, if we were able to choose, we would without a doubt, travel to Japan in the fall: early November, specifically.

November has a smaller chance of rain than October, and more comfortable temperatures than December.

The temperatures will have cooled off from the crazy summer humidity, yet it wouldn’t be too cold for hiking. It wouldn’t have quite the same crazy crowds as cherry blossom season brings. And fall foliage in Japan is something we’ve been dreaming about seeing!

Alternatively, early March would offer the beginnings of cherry blossom season, comfortable weather, and less crowds than those you’ll find late April and early May during Golden Week.

Awesome tips! 👌 My question would be, is there any pro or cons going the last week in May to beginning of June. Looking at 2 weeks. Fukuoka & Tokyo. 😊 TIA!

Did you end up going during that time? We’re going this year in that exact time; late My early June for two weeks.

Want to visit Japan for a conducted tour of 15 days and am thinking of mid September to early October.

Very well article. Thank you very much. This is the first article I read for the trip we are planning. The details were amazing. 🙂

Where was the picture under “summer months at a glance” (with Katie walking up the steps) taken? It’s absolutely beautiful, and I’d love to go there when I visit!

At first, all your pictures are Wonderful. Nice interpretation?

Japan Tours in October     View Tours

Japan tours in october.

October is when autumn truly begins for most of Japan, and as the heat of summer fades, travelers find it to be one of the most inviting months to plan a trip. All across the country, moving from north to south, leaves of the maple, rowan, and gingko put on their finest autumn colors. The ephemeral beauty of fall in Japan is said to rival the spring cherry blossom, and October is the ideal time to experience the majestic wonder of the season. In Gifu Prefecture, the city of Takayama holds their annual Autumn Festival – a truly lively and unforgettable celebration of the season. Takayama Autumn Festival is one of two seasonal festivals in this charming mountain town, and while the Spring Festival embodies the hope for a good harvest, the Autumn festival is all about celebration and gratitude. One of the most ornate festivals in the country, when Old Town Takayama is set aglow in golden light from the 11 large floats that are paraded through the streets. Plan an October tour of Japan and see the northern regions of the country decked in fall splendor. The preserved natural vistas and meticulously kept parks of Hokkaido and Tohoku are pretty in any season, but in October they become truly magnificent. The stunning mountain panorama of Lake Chuzenji, the tree-lined streams and waterfalls of Oirase Gorge, the star-shaped city park of Hakodate – all must-sees during this season as their landscapes glow with fall color. The pleasant weather makes October a most comfortable time for visiting Japan’s top attractions. Enjoy the vibrant Tokyo’s fashionable neighborhoods and cultural landmarks, explore ancient Kyoto’s UNESCO Heritage temples and shrines, feed the playful deer in Nara Park, admire splendid Himeji Castle, and gaze through the gate of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island. Discover the fall beauty of Japan’s historical treasures during one of our October Tours.

Japan One Life Adventures - 10 Days Tour

Japan One Life Adventures - 10 Days

Our guide Brad was a great guy and he was always helpful whenever we needed anything. But the company's choices in terms of the itinerary and accomodation were questionable for Tokyo, especially for the first hotel since it was the first impression we got.

Stunning Japan with Shirakawa-go (private 3 star hotel rooms)

Couldn’t have asked for a better guide. Phillip was knowledgable, organized, and funny. He defined the “stunning” in Stunning Tours.

Essential Japan Tour

Essential Japan

I was a solo traveller and was exclusively focused on the must-see sights of Southern Japan. Europamundo offered the exact states and locations for me. They also offered the flexibility to join or leave the tour depending on individual travel plans. The tour was operationally excellent. The guide was the best tour guide I have ever had. The hotels were centrally located or had transfer services. Wonderful trip.

The tour was great but with out van ratha it wouldn’t be the same he made my holiday he was on hand 24/7 great guy hope to travel with him in 2019

Japan Express Tour

Japan Express

A good intro to Japan. Short daily orientation and tours leaving most afternoons and evenings (if one so desired) to one’s own devices. Good hotels most nights, w some authentic or western (mixed options) lodgings w onsen. Most transport needs were accommodated in trains (the best), and some city buses where more effective. I added extra days, both front and back for extra exploration. Japan is surprisingly clean, safe, orderly, polite (to a fault) and relatively cheap (I found). Our guide did very well, and her English good and improved as we went along.

Japan Adventure Tour

Japan Adventure

Wow! What an amazing tour. Zoe is just amazing. Was so fortunate to travel in such a friendly group at such an amazing time of year with the blossoms. Loved the balance of free time and activities, with time to relax on nights in the mountains. Feel like 12 days was perfect to feel like I saw the best bits of Japan

9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms) Tour

9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)

Amazing tour. Kayoko was awesome and we got to see so much of Japan. Only wish there was a change on the 10 person minimum for the optional tours. We had a smaller group so getting 10 people for things sometimes was tough.

Wonders of Japan End Osaka Tour

  • Coach / Bus

Wonders of Japan End Osaka

Advertised as English/Spanish, but the guides were clearly more at home en Espanol.

Discover Japan Tour

Discover Japan

The Discover Japan tour was everything I wanted and more; our CEO Takae took us a wide variety of locations across Japan where we got to experience both the big, famous sights as well as the small, unexpected cultural experiences that'll stay with me for a very long time. Everything was incredibly well organised, great accommodation and well communicated from G Adventures before the tour started with a clear itinerary and details of what to pack. I'd really recommend this tour to anyone looking to experience a wide breadth of what Japan has to offer!

Japan One Life Adventures - 14 Days Tour

Japan One Life Adventures - 14 Days

This tour is amazing. Jam packed with fantastic experiences and a nice variety of accommodation styles. I couldn't recommend a better tour, especially at the price. When compared to another tour companies like topdeck and contiki. One life gives you more at almost half the price of its competitors. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, and jump on this as soon as you can.

Japan Delight with Hiroshima(private 3 star hotel rooms) Tour

Japan Delight with Hiroshima(private 3 star hotel rooms)

Can certainly recommend. I went with my son and had a great time. The sites they visited were great and our tour guide Rea was great, very knowledgeable and together with our bus driver ensured we got the most out of the trip. The hotels were very good clean and comfortable all with great facilities. We traveled light and we’re easily able to wash and dry our clothes when we needed. All in all I would recommend for anyone to do this trip. It is a great introduction to Japan. We would book another trip with tour radar based on this experience. A big shout out to Rea.

What people love about Japan Tours in October

This tour was excellent, six out of five stars! Very well organised, itinerary included everything with good amount of free time. Hostels booked were excellent and very clean.
An enjoyable tour. Mixture of all age groups and a manageable size. Covered the main sightseeing things and encountered many Japanese experiences along the way. My expectations were met.
The overall experience was good . The itinerary was appropriate and well planned. The hotels were of a good standard. However, the quality of the guides varied throughout the tour.

Is there something on in October that I am unaware of? I appreciate there are some festivals but these are normally town by town and just for 1 or 2 days.

Hotels seem to be 30-50% more.

Also struggling to find places with avaliability.

Often, hotel prices are at the standard rate until 3-6 months before booking. Check within 6 months and see if they change.

Also a long weekend in October...that will bump prices around 14 Oct Mon Health and Sports Day

Ok cheers guys maybe I will wait another few weeks till in the 6 months window.

I defo dont want to over pay because 50 nights at 20-30% more adds up to a lot!!

Clouds gather over Japan's ambitious Osaka World Expo

One of the largest wooden structures ever built is taking shape in Osaka, but hopes that Expo 2025 will unite the world are being dogged by cost blowouts and a lack of public enthusiasm.

Workers walking under the construction of the "Grand Roof", known as the Ring, one of the world's largest wooden structures, at the site of the 2025 Expo

(Copyright: Yuichi YAMAZAKI / AFP)

The imposing circular centrepiece will be crowned by a 20-metre-high (65-foot) sloping canopy, designed by top architect Sou Fujimoto, known as the "Grand Roof".

It has a circumference of a staggering two kilometres and 161 countries and territories will show off their trade opportunities and cultural attractions at pavilions within the vast latticed ring.

A crane hoisted a block of beams into place this week as organisers said construction was largely on schedule, one year before visitors will be welcomed.

Expo 2025 global PR director Sachiko Yoshimura maintained that global participants would be "united" by the event even though there are conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and elsewhere.

Russia will not be among the participants at Expo 2025, which will run from April 13 to October 13.

"Of course there are so many crises around the world, but we want everybody to actually get together and think about the future and sustainability," Yoshimura said.

It has also met a lukewarm response in Japan, where promotion is ramping up and the red-and-blue Expo 2025 mascot "Myaku-Myaku" -- billed by the official website as "a mysterious creature born from the unification of cells and water" -- is ever-present.

A recent Kyodo News survey found that 82 percent of Japanese companies, sponsors and others involved said "fostering domestic momentum" would be a challenge.

- Ballooning budget -

The construction budget has ballooned 27 percent from 2020 estimates to 235 billion yen ($1.5 billion) due to inflation and Japan's chronic worker shortage.

Some say the costs are also hard to justify when 6,300 people are still in evacuation centres and hotels after an earthquake on New Year's Day devastated parts of central Japan.

Fujimoto's "Grand Roof" alone has a price tag of 35 billion yen and has been slammed by opposition leader Kenta Izumi as "the world's most expensive parasol".

The "Grand Roof" and other structures are temporary, with no clear plan for them other than organisers saying they will be reused or recycled.

The site on an artificial island in Osaka Bay will be cleared after the Expo, with plans to build a resort there containing Japan's first casino.

Jun Takashina, deputy secretary general of the Japan Association for Osaka 2025, acknowledged budget and regulatory "struggles" among foreign participants but said organisers would help make sure the displays are ready in time.

Among the most hotly anticipated attractions are flying electric cars, which take off vertically, showcasing the event's technological and environmental aspirations.

But the vehicles -- subject to reams of regulations -- will be a "kind of experiment", Yoshimura said.

More than 1.2 million tickets have already been sold and organisers hope to attract 28.2 million visitors, including 3.5 million from abroad.

That would be four million more than the last World Fair in Dubai but pales in comparison to the 64 million people who attended the 1970 Expo in Osaka, a record until it was overtaken by Shanghai in 2010.

- 'Future like science fiction -

The first world fair to celebrate culture and industrial progress was held in London in 1851, with the Eiffel Tower built for the 1889 Paris World Fair.

Osaka academic Shinya Hashizume, a specialist in architecture history and town planning, said he was amazed as a 10-year-old when he saw a "future that looked like science fiction" at the 1970 Expo.

The first film in IMAX format was shown at that event and visitors could admire rocks brought back from the Moon.

"Those six months were extraordinary for Osaka. Simply put, the whole town was having a party," he said.

The advent of mass tourism and hyper-connected societies may have since lessened the attraction but some Osaka residents still think it's a good idea.

Kosuke Ito, a 36-year-old doctor, said it would "strengthen the economy".

However, Yuka Nakamura, 26, said she might be put off by adult entry fees ranging from 4,000 to 7,500 yen ($25 to $50) a day.
