Naval Station Norfolk

Norfolk, Virginia, is the proud home of the largest naval base in the world. No matter what your reason is for visiting Norfolk, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to tour Naval Station Norfolk .

Naval Station Norfolk's mission is to support and improve the personnel and logistics readiness of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. The Norfolk naval base provides seaport, airport, and squadron facilities, quality of life, and personnel management services.

Don't miss the tours of the Naval Base . The 45-minute tour departs from the Naval Tour and Information Center located at 9079 Hampton Blvd, next to Gate 5. Bus tours conducted by Navy personnel ride past aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, amphibious assault ships and the busy airfield. The tour also drives by historic homes from the 1907 Jamestown Exposition. There is a charge for the tour. A picture ID is required for all adults.

Naval Station Norfolk, the world's largest Naval Station, occupies about 4,300 acres on a peninsula known as Sewells Point. Port facilities extend more than four miles along the waterfront and include some seven miles of pier and wharf space.

75 ships and 134 aircraft are home-ported here, and when they are not at sea they're along side one of the 13 piers or inside one of the 11 aircraft hangars for repair, refit, training and to provide the ship's or squadron's crew an opportunity to be with their families. Naval Station Norfolk is homeport to aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, large amphibious ships, submarines, supply ships, airplanes and helicopters.

Air Operations conducts over 100,000 flight operations each year, an average of 275 flights per day or one every six minutes. Over 150,000 passengers and 264,000 tons of mail and cargo depart annually on Air Mobility Command aircraft and other chartered flights from the NSN airfield. It is the hub for Navy logistics going to the European and Central Command theaters of operations, and to the Caribbean.

The land on which Naval Station is located was originally the site of the 1907 Jamestown Exposition , a mammoth 300th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in America in 1607. 21 states constructed buildings that celebrated their history and industry. Pennsylvania House, a 2/3rds replica of Independence Hall, is one of several state houses that are still standing at the Naval Station.

During the Jamestown Exposition, high-ranking naval officers agreed that this site was ideal for naval activity. After the United States entered World War I in April 1917, the Secretary of the Navy was persuaded to buy the property.

Victory Rover Naval Base Cruise

The Victory Rover makes 2-hour narrated cruises past Naval Station Norfolk. It departs from Nauticus on the downtown waterfront. Enjoy a fascinating and entertaining commentary along the way aboard this Navy-themed vessel. See aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, guided missile cruisers and all of the other ships that form the world's most powerful fleet. USS IOWA represents the largest — and last — class of battleships built by the United States Navy. The IOWA class battleships served in every US conflict from World War II through the Gulf War in 1991.

Visit USS IOWA naval museum and experience a piece of living history.

Why is the battleship USS IOWA significant?

USS IOWA has a long and fascinating history. She was built as the lead vessel of the newest class of battleships, designed during the 1930s as the world was rapidly moving toward war. Commissioned in 1943, IOWA was used in both the Atlantic and the Pacific theaters during World War II.

One of the most significant events she took part in during the war was ferrying President Franklin D. Roosevelt and key military advisors to a top-secret meeting in North Africa with the leaders of the United States’ allies, Great Britain and Soviet Russia. At the end of the trip, the president gave a parting speech to the crew to inspire naval personnel who would go on to serve in important engagements in the Pacific. The rise of aircraft meant the dwindling of the importance of battleships. As a result, no new battleships were built after World War II ended and the IOWA class proved to be the last.

After many years of service, IOWA was decommissioned for the final time in 1990. In 2012, she became a US Navy museum ship, the only naval museum on the West Coast to feature a capital ship that saw action in World War II. Interesting fact: The navy’s history has seen four different ships that have had the name IOWA, including a new Virginia-Class submarine.

How long does it take to visit the museum?

Battleship IOWA is one of the most unique Los Angeles Museums. It’s worth a visit even if you don’t have a ton of time. But as you plan, how much time should you allow?

That depends on the type of visitor you are. Some people like to take their time, peek into every available nook and cranny, read every bit of text, and imagine what life aboard was like for the thousands of sailors who served on this venerable ship. If that’s you, plan several hours for your visit.

Others are up for adventures and want to explore areas like our engine rooms, gun turrets, and the historic captain’s cabin which has hosted the likes of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. You can have a fascinating visit and see a lot in an hour or two.

Battleship IOWA isn’t the only military museum Los Angeles has, by the way. If you’re into military history, you might enjoy a visit to one of the other Los Angeles military museums like the American Military Museum or the Fort MacArthur Museum.

What is a battleship anyway?

The term “battleship” is used to designate a large, armored warship with a main battery of large caliber, long-range guns. Battleships were the most important naval vessels from the late 1800s until WWII.

This type of ship had its origins during the US Civil War, when both the North and the South produced iron-clad warships. A famous naval battle just north of Norfolk, VA between the USS MONITOR and the USS MERRIMACK (rebuilt and renamed the CSS VIRGINIA by the South) demonstrated that existing wooden ships had become obsolete.

In 1869, the HMS MONARCH, built by Great Britain, became the first ocean-going iron-hulled battleship. One of the changes that began to show up on Civil War ships was the replacement of broadside guns pointing out of portholes in the side of the ship with guns mounted in swiveling turrets on the main deck. MONARCH embraced this change fully and represented the first truly modern warship.

From that point, battleships got bigger, faster, and sported guns with increasing range and caliber. USS IOWA, for example, was built with 9 16-inch guns that could fire 2,700 lb shells a distance of more than 20 miles with great accuracy. USS IOWA’s top speed was about 35 knots, roughly 40 miles per hour.

The first battleship built for the US navy was USS MAINE, constructed in the navy yard in New York City. The last, never finished, was KENTUCKY, whose construction came to an end in 1947 at the Norfolk Navy Yard. In total, the naval history of the U.S. includes the construction of 59 battleships of 23 different classes.

Are battleships still important in naval combat?

The United States Navy no longer has any battleships in its fleet. If you read the answer above about battleships, you’ll know that the last ones were built during WWII.

So why did this awesome naval weapon stop being used?

The answer has to do with the rise of naval aviation. Large ships like IOWA are vulnerable to attacks from above by aircraft. The experience of WWII demonstrated this dramatically when Japan’s YAMATO, the largest and most powerful battleship ever constructed, was sunk by allied aircraft in 1945.

During that war, the aircraft carrier was taking the place of the battleship as the most important naval vessel. That remains true today. Because of its size, an aircraft carrier is relatively vulnerable, which means ships that are a bit like a battleship but smaller in size — cruisers and destroyers — continue to have a role in providing protection as escorts in an aircraft carrier fleet.

How many US Navy ships are museums?

There is a large number of naval history exhibits around the country that feature ships from the United States Navy. The greatest number are ships from WWII. The oldest is the USS CONSTITUTION, whose construction began in 1797 and which is still a commissioned ship.

If you’re a fan of U.S. naval history, be sure to visit the National Museum of the United States Navy (or U.S. Navy Museum) the next time you’re on the East Coast. The flagship museum of U.S. naval history, it’s located in what used to be the naval gun factory, part of the facilities of the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.

The Washington Navy Yard, beginning in the early 1800s, was an important center of ship and gun production for the U.S. navy until ordinance and gun production ceased in 1961. The new national museum of the Navy, sometimes colloquially called the Naval Gun Factory Museum, was opened in 1963.

If you’re interested in maritime history beyond the military focus of a naval museum, Los Angeles also hosts the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.

Hi Ray! Thank you for the great information on the USS Wisconsin!

After you visit the Wisconsin book a trip on the Victory Rover. The trip takes you past the many ship builders doing work on current military ships and concludes by sailing past the navel shipyard. If there are aircraft carriers in dock, they are amazing to see.

Donahue, Vietnam vet, in country Nha Be. 1968- 1969. Served on USS Lexington, 4yr. It was a training carrier homeported in Pensacola , Fl. for over 20 years. Purported to have more carrier landings than any USN deck. Now a museum in Corpus Christi , Tx. Lady Lex had a distinguished WWII record in the Pacific and served there until becoming a training carrier in Late 1960’s. Visit the proud warship in Corpus Christi, Texas and relate to the magnificence of the defender American freedoms.

Many POW’s from Vietnam were on Lexington and continued to be important in the greatest fleet aviation training in history.

Hello CR. Thank you for your service! And thank you for taking the opportunity to share about your time serving on the USS Lexington and a bit about her history. First-hand knowledge is priceless.

Dear Isis – Old Ironsides got her famous nickname during War of 1812, not from George Washington. He passed in 1799. The nickname came from crew during sea battle with Brit frigate HMS Guerriere.

Hi Larry! Thank you for the information! We have updated the article. Have a great weekend!

Don’t forget the submarine USS Nautilus in Groton, CT.

Hi Peter! A great addition. Thank you!

Don’t forget about the USS Alabama in Mobil Alabama.

I agree. The Alabama is one of the best battleship exhibits, and it also has the submarine USS Drum.

Visitor Testimonials

Great for all ages.

We were unsure how long we would spend with two small kids (ages 4 & 7) and ended up spending over 2 hours on this huge battleship! The experience really makes you appreciate the men and women who defend our nation as you can tour many levels of the ship. You get a chance to see how the sailors lived their daily lives as you see many different sections, including above and below the main deck.

Wonderful Staff!

This is a unique opportunity to get to tour this class of Battleship. The staff here is very friendly and does a great job of maintaining this ship and opening it up as much as possible for tours. It was really a treat to get to see the very tight working spaces inside the 16-inch gun turrets.

Amazing Tour!

I served 4 years in the Navy on an aircraft carrier. What could I learn on a tour of the North Carolina? A lot! Our tour guide took our group of four from the bridge to the bilge and from the bow to the fantail. He tailored the tour to our liking, stopped when anyone needed a break, and always made sure we saw everything we wanted to see.

An Incredible Ship!

An incredible ship, with an equally incredible history. We toured the vessel on our own, taking time to read crew memories and explore in our own time over a 2hr period. Surprised how much is accessible! Loved exploring below deck. We had a great experience learning more about BSNC and her crew. Nice souvenirs to take home in the gift shop, too.

Loved Every Minute!

What an amazing battleship museum! My husband was in the Navy, and he absolutely loved every minute of our visit. It was awesome to have our own personal guide to show us the various items and locations throughout the ship. The admission price was very reasonable (be sure to mention if you are a veteran for a discount) and the history of the Battleship was amazing. If you’re in the area, this is a must stop!

Keep the History Alive!

Spectacular! I was there in 1968 with my Father. I was excited to go back with my other half. He enjoyed the history as well. These are things that we need to keep alive and not slip away.

Mission Statement

Located in the heart of the Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan, the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum (SVNSM) serves our guests and local communities as a premier military and maritime museum in order to provide a unique, educational experience and honor those who have defended our nation's freedom and independence in support of the ongoing stewardship and preservation of USS EDSON (DD 946) as a national historic landmark.

The Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum, formed as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in 1997, brought USS EDSON (DD 946) to Bay City's riverfront as a unique attraction. Today, volunteers and staff work to preserve and promote USS EDSON as a national historic landmark, an important piece of history, and to serve as a reminder of Bay City’s century-old shipbuilding heritage.

Victory Rover in Front of Wisconsin

Discover the Sights of the Elizabeth River, Port of Virginia and the World's Largest Naval Base

The Victory Rover has cruised from Nauticus, Home of the Battleship Wisconsin, on the Downtown Norfolk waterfront since 2001. Guests enjoy plenty of comfortable seating, an air-conditioned enclosed deck, an open-air shaded upper deck, snack bar, and souvenir shop our our naval base cruise . Our Captain’s expert commentary is a big reason we are the #1 tour in Norfolk on TripAdvisor.

While cruising the smooth waters of the Elizabeth River, you will tour one of the world’s busiest seaports including the world’s largest naval base, home of the Atlantic Fleet: destroyers, submarines, guided missile cruisers, aircraft carriers and more.

Experience the #1 Tour in Norfolk per TripAdvisor

From the very first we were impressed with the professional and courteous crew members of the Victory Rover. Every one of them was extremely nice and very helpful during the tour. The boat was very clean and almost continuously throughout our time on the boat we observed at least one crew member wiping down railings and door knobs, etc. The tour narrator (docent?), was extremely knowledgeable. The boat was set up and managed to keep passengers at social distance at all times.

Loved this cruise! Makes you appreciate the might of the American Navy! Being from landlocked Ohio I never get to see anything from the Navy so this was amazing. Loved the narrative and the obvious pride in what the American Navy stands for. Saw some dolphins which were a bonus! Spent time in the museum afterward. The cruise ship has a little snack bar and a few gift items. Buy a t-shirt and support them. Totally recommend this cruise!

An old Navy friend visited me and we decided to take this cruise.it was a great decision. The guide was unbelievably knowledgable, not only of the area but about all the ships we passed by as well. The surprising part for me was the fact that, even though I have lived here for many years, I was amazed by how much I learned about our area. I would recommend it to residents of this area and visitors alike.

I had been on one of their cruises two years ago so when I found out that they would be open on my next trip to Norfolk I booked a cruise. The cruise was excellent like before, the captain is knowledgable and does a good job of pointing out everything you see and some of the history of the area. I had no health concerns as the boat was clean and common touch areas were cleaned during the cruise. I highly recommend this cruise.

This was an awesome tour. My husband and I took our five year old son with us and all enjoyed the experience. The captain was extremely knowledgeable and the crew was very helpful. A crew member took time to answer all my son's questions about the naval ships he saw. All crew members wore masks and social distancing was taking place. We felt very safe even in this Covid environment. If you're in the Norfolk area, we would highly recommend this experience...even with kids!

The tour was information and entertainment nonstop from boarding to disembarking. As we traveled through the harbor the captain told us about history, ship building, commerce, and more about the US Naval fleet than I can describe. Clearly, the captain has a deep and comprehensive knowledge and is not reading from a script. Worth every penny.

A FEW GOOD THINGS TO KNOW

TOUR LENGTH Do allow approximately an hour to two hours for a tour of the USS TURNER JOY (DD-951). We stop selling tour tickets 30 minutes prior to closing time. When planning a trip aboard our ship, there are several things you should anticipate.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY Please wear flat-soled or rubberized-soled shoes. While the outdoor tour route is covered with a non-skid material, some parts can still be slippery, so be careful. Recomended dress is shorts, loose slacks or pants for everyone – and LAYERS – our ship can be cold! Do keep both hands free for 70º ladder climbing.

WALK-WAY & LADDER SAFETY When going through a hatch, watch your head and feet! Door coamings and overheads are well marked, but remain somewhat different than shoreside entryways. Ladders can be steep. Those with fear of heights should consider before ascending/descending.
