Watch My Conversion Story on EWTN’s "The Journey Home"

Following in the footsteps of my friend Brent Stubbs , next Monday I’ll be appearing on EWTN’s  The Journey Home . The show is hosted by Marcus Grodi and invites Catholic converts to come and share their story.

We filmed the episode about a month ago and I covered many different story lines–my early religious upbringing, a life-changing Methodist campus ministry, my homeless lake friends in Tallahassee, some influential mentors, authors that spurred my conversion, and the crazy, circuitous way God drew me into his Church.

I was worried I wouldn’t have enough material to fill an entire hour, but the timing worked out perfectly.

The show will air on EWTN television  beginning next Monday at 8:00pm ET  and it will repeat many times throughout the week:

– Monday (9/26) – 8:00pm ET – Tuesday (9/27) – 1:00am ET – Tuesday (9/27) – 9:00am ET – Thursday (9/29) – 2:00pm ET – Saturday (10/1) – 11:00pm ET

In addition to The Journey Home , I also recorded an episode of Deep In Scripture , a weekly radio show hosted by Marcus . On the show, guests discuss Bible verses that they saw in a new light once they began exploring Catholicism.

Instead of covering passages that were instrumental in my conversion, yet also the conversion of many others–passages like John 6 , Matthew 16:19 , and 1 Timothy 3:15 –I proposed a handful that shined with new radiance during my new media research.

Marcus and crew loved the idea, so during the hour we covered Acts 17:16-34 (Paul’s mission to the Areopagus), Mark 4:3-8 (Jesus’ parable of the sower), Luke 24:13-32 (the Emmaus journey), Luke 5:3-4 (Jesus’s order to “cast out into the deep”), 2 John 12 (St. John’s plea for face-to-face communication), and Matthew 28:10 (Jesus’s command, “do not be afraid”).

You can hear the radio show on EWTN radio or stream it through  EWTN.com on any of the dates and times below:

– Wednesday (9/28) – 2:00pm ET – Thursday (9/28) – 1:00am ET – Sunday (10/2) – 7:00am ET

If you can’t catch the TV or radio show, both will be archived on YouTube within the next couple weeks and I’ll be sure to post them here.

The Coming Home Network  is the group behind both shows, and they’re really doing fantastic work to bridge the Catholic-Protestant divide. Visiting their studios was a joy, especially meeting Kevin Lowry , who has a great blog and a forthcoming book , and JonMarc Grodi , who has stepped into the blogosphere himself. If you’re a Protestant exploring the Catholic faith, I strongly suggest you connect with this group.

Here is Brent’s episode in case you missed it. He’s much more intelligent, charming, articulate, and comfortable than I am in front of the camera (and off-camera, too):

journey home youtube

Jack Williams - Former Evangelical Christian

Jack Williams, who serves as General Manager of EWTN Radio, shares his complicated path to the Catholic Church, from an on-fire "born again" conversion as a young man, through family struggles and eventually to the Catholic Church, through the persistent prayers of loved ones who never gave up on him. Some of you may also be familiar with the work of Jack's wife, Johnette Williams, host of EWTN's Women of Grace. Be sure to catch Jack's story!

John Bacon - Former Anglican Priest

John Bacon was raised Southern Baptist, and went to Beeson Divinity School. That seminary formation introduced him to the Church Fathers, and rather than going all the way to Catholicism, he discerned a call to priesthood as an Anglican. Several circumstances, including the onset of COVID-19, caused him to reconsider the meaning of his vocation, and where he was truly called to be. For John and his wife, the intercession of Mary and the saints -- especially St. Boniface -- were the final thing that really convinced them they needed to become Catholic.

DAN VENEZIA - CATHOLIC REVERT

Dan Venezia grew up Catholic, but didn't pay much attention to matters of faith; he was busier chasing a dream to play pro baseball. He ended up in the minor leagues with the Twins organization, and made some solid Christian friends along the way, but it was when that dream fell apart -- and especially when his world was turned upside down by COVID -- that Dan had a major conversion that would make him finally start taking his faith seriously.

FR. JEFFREY KIRBY

Raised with a strong sense of right and wrong but no sense of Catholicism, Jeffrey Kirby’s faith caught fire. His search for a closer relationship with Jesus led to the priesthood.

PHILLIP CAMPBELL

Baptized a Catholic, Phillip Campbell grew spiritually hungry in his teens, and spent time in Protestant congregations. But he came back to his faith and reunited with his family.

GREG AND JENNIFER WILLITS

Greg Willits grew up Catholic. His wife was in the Worldwide Church of God. After their child was baptized, they both had profound awakenings especially in regard to the Eucharist.

NORA JENSEN

Being raised in a Wiccan family gave Nora Jensen an extremely cynical view towards Christianity. But when she came to Mass, she found herself surrounded by happy,, smiling people.

SETH HAINES

Seth Haines and his wife battled issues that led them down different paths, but with prayer and discernment, they both realized their true spiritual home was the Catholic Church.

Don McLane experimented with several faiths, and even felt a call to the Episcopalian priesthood. But he discovered a deeper understanding of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church.

Paul Rose always loved music, especially singing and songwriting. Upon discovering sacred music, he became even more enthralled with the religious patrimony of the Catholic Church.

JEREMY McLELLAN

Jerry McLellan is a stand-up comedian with a unique outlook on life. His views on Christianity evolved over time, leading him to eventually find a home in the Catholic Church.

COURTNEY COMSTOCK

Courtney Comstock shares the series of life experiences and questions that led her from a background in Pentecostalism to a home in the Catholic Church. JonMarc Grodi hosts

SANTONIO HILL

Santonio Hill was raised Catholic, but his big dream was to play college and pro football. When his pastor suggested the priesthood, he finally realized what was important in life.

FR. CORWIN LOW, O.P.

Despite a lucrative career, Corwin Low found money and success weren’t fulfilling. Dominican friars in Italy helped him reset his priorities, and he ultimately chose to join them.

JUSTIN HIBBARD

Justin Hibbard grew up in Evangelical communities, but COVID lockdowns caused him to re-evalute what it meant to be a Christian. Study and prayer led him to the Catholic Church.

FR. RICHARD WILSON

Richard Wilson went to West Point and worked in finance after his service. But despite his Protestant upbringing, he felt a higher calling to serve the Lord as a Catholic priest.

ANDRE AND ANGELE REGNIER

André was Catholic and Angèle an Evangelical Protestant. When they married, their world views collided, leading to much debate and eventually a commitment to the Catholic faith.

MICHAEL MASON

Michael Mason found his faith both challenged and deepened at the Southern Evangelical Seminary. When it all sounded more Catholic than Protestant, he came home to the Church.

JENNIFER SOUTHERS

After her husband died, Jennifer Southers looked for ways to grow stronger in her faith. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land led her to Catholicism and a deeper relationship with God.

DUSTIN QUICK

Baptized Catholic, Dustin Quick experimented with Islam as a teen. But after much study, he felt the truest expression of Christianity was in the Catholic faith he’d left behind.

DEB SCARAVILLI

Growing up a preacher’s kid, Deb Scaravilli fell in love with a Catholic man. She saw differences between Catholicism and her Evangelical roots, and found her true spiritual home.

MATT GERALD

Matt Gerald was raised in a faithful family of Methodist Protestants, many of whom were ministers. But when he married a Catholic, he discovered the beauty and truth of the faith.

DR. BRANDON VAIDYANATHAN

Raised a Hindu, Brandon Vaidyanathan began attending a youth group with a Catholic girl he was dating. Hearing things about the nature of God he’d never heard from Hinduism, led him to embrace the Catholic Church.

DR. ERIK BALDWIN

Erik Baldwin was serious about his Presbyterian faith, until a scandal in his congregation led him to reevaluate everything. He realized he could no longer treat his interest in Catholicism as merely an academic exercise.

LAWAIN MCNEIL

Lawain McNeil grew up in a strong Christian home, and early on, felt a call to ministry. He pursued a degree in Biblical studies and ended up serving in the Church of Christ. A number of factors in his life led him to begin exploring the Catholic Faith, including an interest in the Catholic literary and artistic tradition, and friendship with others who shared his background and were also interested in Catholicism. He shares how all those threads came together as he made his way home to the Catholic Church.

Kevin Shinkle

Kevin Shinkle was baptized in the Church of the Nazarene, but his family left the church when their pastor told his parents they had to stop smoking, and that brought an end to Kevin's churchgoing days for a while. He went on to college, and met some friends who were devout Catholics and helped him develop an initial curiosity about the Church. When his career as a journalist began to become more intense, he decided he needed a foundation of faith, and those seeds planted by his Catholic friendships began to bear fruit.

David Dean came from a Presbyterian background, and went on to college at Kansas University. At the time, it had an Applied Humanities program that focused on classical studies. Through the course of the program, a number of the professors and students became Catholic because of what they were finding about the Church’s role in the great philosophical and theological tradition, and David ended up entering the Church his senior year of college. He went on to spend a number of years working in Catholic education, and now serves as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Tulsa.

Kathryn Whitaker

Kathryn Whitaker was baptized in a Methodist church as an infant in Texas, but after her pastor left, her family skipped around churches looking for a fit, including time spent with the Nazarenes and Disciples of Christ. Visiting Baptist churches in college, Kathryn heard her first real anti-Catholicism from the pulpit, and it shocked her and made her want to learn more about Catholicism, which she poured herself into. This led her to Catholic friendships, and eventually to marry a Catholic. Kathryn shares the incredible story behind how she ended up being confirmed Catholic and receiving her first Holy Communion, an hour before her wedding rehearsal dinner!

Mother Petra

Mother Petra was raised in a family full of Wesleyan ministers, missionaries and church planters, and went on to study at Indiana Wesleyan. She became increasingly frustrated by divisions in Christianity over everything from Bible interpretation to worship practices, and at one point even stopped going to church. When one of her sisters became Catholic, it opened up to her the possibility that there really was an authoritative way to understand the reality of what it meant to be a Christian. She entered the Catholic Church, and eventually religious life at a Byzantine monastery.

Review: SnuzPod4 Bassinet

Everything sleep-related with a newborn is terrifying. Almost every parent feels a sharp stab in the heart every time they set their kid down for the first few weeks. It's biology.

So who the hell do you trust to make a safe space for them to sleep? Where is it safe to put your little one, nestled in a straitjacket so that it can’t roll anywhere and suffocate itself while you sneak into the living room for a doomscroll about 529 plans ? The Brits have the answer: The SnuzPod4, a simple wooden bedside cell that now occupies a permanent space next to my mattress, has been popular in the United Kingdom for years.

Given that my first child is only a few months old, I have limited experience with the best bassinets . But I’ve found this one to be simple, good-looking, and shockingly sleep-deprivation proof. I have yet to do anything sketchy with it on accident, which I can’t say about some other parenting tools I’ve tried (I’m looking at you, strollers and carriers ).

With midcentury-modern-meets-Ikea vibes (and assembly), the SnuzPod4 and its associated base come together in about half an hour of frenzied pre-birth building. There is a bottom section that acts as a cradle for the bassinet up top. The bassinet itself can sit atop the base, or you can just rock it on the floor (nice for travel).

Once you build the top and bottom sections (basically just putting fabric over some metal rods and screwing things together), you’re essentially off to bedtime. It comes with a breathable mattress so you can be less worried about your kiddos suffocating in the night (though that fear will never go away entirely, I’ve realized), and it has a gentle reflux incline position if your baby spits up more than the already large amount all babies spit up. Enjoy!

It is JPMA-certified , which means it meets the ASTM safety standard for infant beds, and I particularly love that it rocks really easily back and forth when my daughter just can’t seem to fall perfectly asleep and just needs a little extra soothing.

Close To Home

This is a bedside bassinet, which is increasingly popular among parents who don’t want the potential dangers of cosleeping but who want easy access to their kids during sleep (and the benefits of being in the same room). It squeezes in at just under 20 inches, which easily fits beside my bed, and the smooth bottom of the base helps it slide into place on wood or carpet.

You can adjust it to the height of your bed (there are seven positions to choose from). Ours turned out to be right about in the middle, go figure. If you sleep super close to the ground, you can just forgo the base entirely and use the bassinet straight on the ground, where it also has a sloped, flat bottom that you can rock. We found this particularly helpful right after my daughter was born, when a snowstorm (and associated mayhem in Portland, Oregon) had us crashing at my folks' place for a few days.

Four months after my daughter was born, and we still use this as our primary bassinet for sleep and naps. I like that it’s made from sustainably sourced wood rather than something petrochemical, and I like that we can also drag it easily out into the living room when she’s being watched by someone else. It’s a laundry hamper for your kid to sleep in, and it works pretty well for that.

Will this thing rock itself automatically or play sounds like some of the fancier bassinets do? No, it won’t, but you might not need that. As with all things in parenting, how and when your kid sleeps is ultimately on you.
