Coupled with backdrops of green fields, mountains, and even cliffsides, is it any wonder why people think Ireland is one of the most picturesque places on Earth, with fantastic views ? Ireland is fiercely proud of its culture, traditions , and native language (Irish Gaelic, or simply called Irish today). Included in Ireland`s cultural tradition are very strong literary roots , and the founding fathers of Irish prose and poetry are among the greatest minds of all time. You can also see Irish culture on display in the heritage towns as well as in the Gaeltacht (a predominantly Irish-speaking area of the country) where you can take Irish language lessons or even learn about traditional Celtic music ? If you don`t get a chance to learn much about it, at least take some time to listen to it, either at one of a myriad of festivals or in one of Ireland`s many pubs . (It isn`t an Irish experience without a pint of Guinness !)

Most people who come to Ireland arrive in Dublin , its capital; even if you arrive in the country through another city, you should make time to spend at least three days here. We recommend that you drive so you can explore absolutely everything Ireland -- urban and rural -- has to offer. One of the most popular tourist drives is the Ring of Kerry , a 111-mile route which starts in Killarney (home to a picturesque and serene national park ) and passes through many towns, including Kenmare , located on the ring`s southeastern edge. If you want to travel north from Dublin instead, be sure to visit County Meath on your way across the border to Northern Ireland , where we definitely recommend stopping to visit in Belfast , the capital, and vibrant Derry (Londonderry) . Derry is just a hop, skip and a jump away from County Donegal , across Northern Ireland`s western border in the Republic, which offers some of the most beautiful views in the country, from mountains to cliffsides in mere minutes. For those going to explore the Ring of Kerry, drive up the coast of Western Ireland afterwards and make some time to explore the beautiful and vibrant cities and towns such as Limerick , Shannon , and Galway . Galway, known for its festivals and seafaring traditions, is a great place to explore for a few days before moving on to see more of the country. If more of the coastal Irish life is what you`re after, head south again to South West Ireland and spend some time in Cork and Kinsale . Take a day trip to Blarney Castle , northwest of Cork, and kiss the Blarney Stone! Then head east to South East Ireland , where Waterford , known for its shimmering crystal and Viking traditions, is the region`s largest city.

The Emerald Isle of Ireland, with its lush green fields, rocky coastlines, and historic towns and villages, can be enjoyed year-round. However, there are more advantageous times to visit when compared to others. It is recommended to visit in the shoulder season , when accommodations and airfares are not as high as the summer high season, but temperatures are still mild and the rainy season has finally ended. Ideal times to visit Ireland are the latter part of April, May, September , and the early part of October . If you visit between late fall and early spring, note that you will most likely get caught in rain showers. It`s very Irish -- but it can be very dreary for a holiday. The best way to experience everything that Ireland has to offer, from the big cities to the small, charming villages in the Gaeltacht and even further afield, is to travel by car. Trains in Ireland link large and medium-sized population centers, but do not always travel to smaller villages. By Car: The road network in Ireland has grown to become one of the most developed infrastructures in Western Europe, due largely in part to the `Celtic Boom` of the 1990s. National highways criss-cross the country and expressways link major cities to the suburbs. As you explore the countryside, you will find quaint country lanes that may be as small as a single lane! There are many popular driving routes that connect tourists directly with the culture and landscape of rural Ireland, such as the Burren Loop and the Ring of Kerry, among others. There are minor differences between driving in the Republic and driving in Northern Ireland, mostly confined to signage. By Train: Rail travel in Ireland is administered by Irish Rail. Rail lines connect nearly every provincial capital, although they do not stop at many villages, especially in the west and north of the country. The Republic of Ireland`s hubs for rail transportation are Dublin, Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, and Galway, with Belfast and Derry being the hubs for rail in Northern Ireland. Train service connects to, or is directly adjacent to, ferry ports in Drogheda, Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Ringaskiddy (Cork), and Rosslare Europort.

The Republic of Ireland uses the Euro (€). Northern Ireland, like the other constituent nations of the United Kingdom, uses the pound sterling (£). US dollars are not accepted. You will need to exchange Euros for pounds if you enter the North from the Republic, and vice versa, you must exchange your pounds for Euros when entering the Republic from Northern Ireland or any other nation of the United Kingdom. I had the most incredible time (even though I'm completely exhausted). Overland Tours and our guide, Eoin, were incredible. There was a minor hiccup with the vehicle but even with that little issue it did not put a damper on our trip and Eoin was a champion getting the issue resolved. The Celtic Tour by Wild N Happy went way beyond my expectations! It was a complete delight to be enlightened by such knowledgeable, native guides of Gaelic Irish culture who authentically could share the stories of the historical unfolding of Irish history. I would only trust driving to the tour guide along those narrow and windy roads to awesome ancient historical landmarks along the amazing western coastline. Our guide knew the best spots to go to, depending on what your desire was to explore in the quaint villages and gave us plenty of time to assimilate. The Tour provided diversity, a well thought-out mix of outdoor and indoor activities, lots of surprising stops along the way, and everyone seemed fulfilled and reluctant to end this highly recommended Celtic adventure!

With its pleasantly warm weather and thinned crowds, May is the perfect time to take a trip before the expensive summer season. Considering sights, weather, traveler sentiment and annual events (among other factors), U.S. News rounded up the best places to visit in May. Whether you're looking for an outdoor adventure in a national park, a quick Memorial Day getaway or a leisurely beach vacation , you can't go wrong with these destinations. Bryce Canyon National Park

When May comes around in Bryce Canyon National Park, the snow is nearly gone, which means the park's main road and popular trails are likely to be open. Highs are typically in the 60s during the day, too – ideal conditions for hiking and biking this Utah park's paths. Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. For a glimpse of wildlife, head to Lamar Valley to view wolf pups emerging from their dens. Keep in mind that if you visit during Memorial Day weekend, you'll likely run into crowds.

With warm weather year-round (average temperatures sit in the 80s), there's never a bad time to visit Singapore. But in May, this Asian city-state on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula welcomes events such as the Singapore Cocktail Festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts and the Singapore HeritageFest. When you're not enjoying your time at one of Singapore's cultural events, check out top attractions like Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic nature park that is home to the Supertree Observatory and the Cloud Forest.

6 Delightful Day Trips from Dublin Ireland to Take in 2024

Taking a trip to the Emerald Isle?  You’re probably planning to spend a few days in Dublin, the lively capital of Ireland. 

But there are so many more amazing places to visit in Ireland!  You should definitely take some day trips from Dublin to see more of the country’s must-visit attractions.

I spent four months living just outside of Dublin last summer.  Whenever the weather forecast was pleasant (or at least not calling for a deluge), I’d spend my weekends exploring this beautiful country.

While it did take me a little while to get the hang of driving on the other side of the road in Ireland , I had a great time seeing everything from medieval architecture to Ireland’s stunning natural landmarks.

The Absolute Must-Do Activities

If you can do all the tours on this Dublin list, do it. But if you’re time is limited, these are my Dublin Day Trip faves:

• Visit the town of Kilkenny.
• Take a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher along Ireland’s famous Wild Atlantic Way.
• Drink a Guinness at a local pub.

1. Kilkenny

Kilkenny is one of my favorite Dublin day trips.  It’s only an hour and 30 minutes by car or about an hour and 40 minutes via public transport.

Kilkenny is known as Ireland’s Medieval Mile, and history buffs will love exploring the ancient sites scattered throughout the city.

One of Kilkenny’s top attractions is Kilkenny Castle.  This imposing castle dates from the 12 th century and is surrounded by lush green lawns.  While you can take a self-guided tour, it’s worth the upcharge for the guided tour to learn about its intriguing history. 

Kilkenny is filled with historic cathedrals. The most important is St. Canice’s Cathedral, which boasts beautiful stained-glass windows and an impressive pipe organ.  If you’re not afraid of heights, climb the Round Tower.  You’ll get a workout climbing the ladders to reach the top of the tower, but you’ll love the panoramic views of the countryside!

Enjoy traditional Irish food and daily live music at Matt the Millers.  Be sure to sample a pint of Smithwick’s Red Ale (the Smithwick’s brewery was founded here in Kilkenny).

If you’re visiting Kilkenny with your family, check out the National Reptile Zoo – the only one in Ireland!  Or take a short drive to the Castlecomer Discovery Park and get your adrenaline pumping on Ireland’s longest zip line.

2. Limerick

Another excellent choice for a Dublin day trip is Limerick.  It takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes to drive here from Dublin.  The fastest public transportation option takes around 2 hours.

The main attractions in Limerick are within a compact area, so it’s easy to do your sightseeing on foot.

The most popular activity in Limerick is visiting King John’s Castle.  This imposing medieval fortress will transport you back to medieval times.  Learn about history through the museum’s exhibits, then climb the towers and enjoy excellent views of the River Shannon from the ramparts.

Don’t miss the beautiful Saint Mary’s Cathedral with its stunning stained-glass windows.  Check out the Celtic crosses marking the grave sites in the adjoining burial ground.  For a memorable experience, attend a concert at the cathedral!

Museum enthusiasts will enjoy exploring the treasures of the Hunt Museum, housed in Limerick’s former Customs House.  Its collections contain a wide variety of art and medieval artifacts.  Don’t miss the outdoor museum in the garden.

3. Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most stunning natural wonders (they’re also a UNESCO Geopark).  It does take about 3 hours and 15 minutes to drive from Dublin, and there aren’t any public transportation options.

This does make for a particularly long day trip, but the Cliffs of Moher are a must-see attraction.  I recommend taking a group tour to see the Cliffs from Dublin.  Many companies offer these day tours, allowing you to enjoy the scenery rather than worrying about the long drive.

Plan to spend a couple of hours walking along the paths and admiring the views around each curve.  There is also a visitor center with interpretive exhibits and some dining options.

If you drive a little further up the coast to Doolin, you can take a boat tour and view the Cliffs of Moher from the perspective of the water.

Tip:  While the cliffs are beautiful any time of day, I recommend visiting later in the afternoon to get the best pictures.  I visited on a bright and sunny morning when the cliffs are shadowed.  In the late afternoon and at sunset, the lighting would be phenomenal!

4. Newgrange

Newgrange is one of the most mystical sites in Ireland.  It’s an easy 50-minute drive from Dublin, and it is definitely worth the trip.  You can’t reach Newgrange via public transit, but you can join a tour group to visit Newgrange and the Boyne Valley from Dublin.

Newgrange is an incredible Stone Age monument in Ireland’s Ancient East and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This large passage tomb was painstakingly constructed over 5000 years ago and is surrounded by 97 large kerbstones (some carved with megalithic art).

There are so many mind-boggling aspects to Newgrange.  It is estimated that Newgrange took over 30 years to build.   The materials were not locally available, so they would have had to transport them.   The dimensions and orientation of the site needed to be perfect to align with the sun on the winter solstice.

On the morning of the solstice, the light from the roof box over the passage entryway shines through the passage and illuminates the chamber.  There is such a demand for experiencing this event that there is a lottery to select who can be inside the chamber at this magical moment.

If you are a fan of the movie Braveheart , you’ll want to take a trip to Trim.  It’s only a 50-minute drive from Dublin or a one-hour journey via bus.

The top thing to do in Trim is to visit Trim Castle, the largest Norman Castle in Ireland. This magnificent castle was made famous as the shooting location for the movie Braveheart , starring Mel Gibson.

Enjoy scenic castle views from the Trim Castle River Walk (walking along rivers and canals is a popular activity in Ireland!).  Trim is also home to the oldest bridge in Ireland, which crosses the River Boyne.

Other points of interest to explore in the city include Trim Cathedral (also known as the Cathedral Church of St. Patrick) and the scenic ruins of St Mary’s Abbey.

Enjoy a bite or a pint at Marcie Reagan’s Pub, a local favorite.  Be sure to duck your head as you enter!

6. Maynooth

Maynooth is one of the easiest day trips from Dublin.  If traffic is light, it is a short 30-minute drive from Dublin, or less than an hour via public transit.

Maynooth is one of Ireland’s university towns, home to both Maynooth University and St. Patrick’s College.  It is worth the visit to admire the architecture of the campus buildings (some even say that the south campus of Maynooth University resembles Hogwarts!).

Wander amongst the ruins of Maynooth Castle, or join the locals and enjoy a scenic stroll or bike ride along the Royal Canal Greenway.

Golf enthusiasts will love playing the courses at the gorgeous Carton House Golf Club, which has hosted several Irish Open tournaments.  Choose between the O’Meara Parkland Course or the Montgomerie Links Course.

Local Tip:   There is a massive Tesco Extra supermarket in Maynooth if you need to pick up supplies.  I went here for all my big grocery shopping trips while I was living in Ireland.

Whether you prefer experiencing the jaw-dropping natural beauty of the Cliffs of Moher or touring incredible medieval castles and cathedrals, these day trips from Dublin will not disappoint!
