Celebrity Room Service Menu, Review, and Food Pics 2023

by Prof. Cruise · March 22, 2023

A photo of the cover of the Celebrity room service menu with text that reads: Celebrity room service menu, review, and food pics 2023.

I was in blissful denial about the room service fee on Celebrity, new for 2023, until my recent cruise onboard the Solstice. Then I saw it on the menu, but still couldn’t believe it. Then I saw it on my shipboard account and was like, “no this can’t be right, not on Celebrity !” So I visited Guest Services, needlessly wasting everyone’s time and was told that yes, there is now a fee for most room service orders. And then I saw it on my credit card bill and finally accepted that the days of free hot room service on Celebrity are over and likely never coming back. Sigh. But I’m happy to report that some room service is still free. Here’s the 411 on Celebrity room service:

Room Service Charges on Celebrity

Continental breakfast items: Complimentary from 6am-9:30am. Hot breakfast items: $9.95 service fee + 18% gratuity per delivery (unlimited items per delivery). Lunch/dinner/late night: $9.95 service fee + 18% gratuity per delivery (unlimited items per delivery). Coffee/Juice/Milk/Non-Dairy Milk: Complimentary at breakfast. Wine/Champagne/Beer: Priced a la carte + 20% service fee.

Zenith-level Captain’s Club members, suite guests, and passengers staying in the retreat will still be able to get room service delivered for free.

Celebrity Breakfast Room Service Menu

Celebrity’s room service breakfast card must be hung on your cabin door by 2am for delivery between 6-9:30am the next morning. Indicate your preferred 30 minute delivery window on the card. You can use the room service card to order both complementary continental items or hot items or a combination of both. If you order any hot items from the right side of the menu, you will incur the $9.95 + 18% gratuity charge. I always tip a few extra dollars to the crew member who delivers my order (especially if I only ordered complimentary items), but it isn’t required.

Celebrity Room Service Review

While the desserts were delicious, I didn’t find the other items as good as what you’d get at the buffet, dining room, spa cafe, burger joint, or other dining venues onboard. Note also that this is the exact same room service menu that used to be complimentary (I mean, at least jazz it up a bit if you’re going to start charging). So, is it worth the $9.95 service fee? Under certain emergency circumstances it might be. Like to nurse a hangover from bed, if your toddler is napping and you can’t leave the cabin for lunch, or if the buffet is closed and you get a late-night chocolate cake craving (I speak from experience on that one…shrug).

Thankfully it’s still free (and worthwhile) to order complimentary coffee and a pastry for the balcony as a pre-breakfast. In most other cases though, now that there’s a charge, I’d skip room service. Instead, save the 10 bucks for airport snacks on your trip home and walk yourself to one of the delicious complimentary dining options onboard.

And with that…

Class Dismissed.

Homework (10 points): What are your thoughts and experiences ordering room service on Celebrity? Do you find it worth the $9.95 charge? Share to the comments.

Lately, your photos within your emails (to my iPhone) appear only as question marks in a non-clickable box. Hope you can find a fix for that, as your photos are (were) so great. 👍 PS: Love your blog!

Oh no! Thanks for letting me know. I’ll investigate!

[…] This sailing on the Solstice marked my “return to Celebrity” following Covid and I noticed quite a few cuts and changes since the glorious days of conspicuous consumption: plates piled 10 high with lobster shells in the MDR and complimentary chocolate cake delivered right to your bed! Still, I missed that free bed cake which now comes with a delivery fee of $9.95 + automatic18% gratuity (you can see the current room service menu and read my review HERE). […]

Latest Celebrity Cruises Room Service Menu with Prices

Fancy a leisurely breakfast in your cabin? Craving a late night snack? This useful guide to the  Celebrity Cruises room service menu  has everything you need to know to make the most of this service on your next cruise.

When is room service available on Celebrity Cruises?

Celebrity Cruises offers  room service  for a good proportion of the day so there is almost always something available. It’s worth noting that certain items are only available at particular times:

  • Breakfast 6.00am – 9.30am
  • In-room dining 11.00am – 5.00am

Be aware that some room service comes with a charge so let’s take a look what is included and what parts of the room service menu has a fee.

Celebrity Cruise room service menu

Is room service free on Celebrity Cruises?

Room service Continental breakfast is still included in your cruise fare and you use the breakfast door hanger supplied in your cabin to order this. Just remember to hang it outside your cabin door before 2am to guarantee delivery.

Room service Premium Breakfast and in-room dining items are not free on Celebrity Cruises.  There is a $9.95 service fee + 18% gratuity. This is charged per room service delivery (not per item). Passengers in Retreat suites and Zenith-level Captain’s Club members have this fee waived.

How do you order room service on Celebrity Cruises?

Breakfast can be ordered by filling out the order card in your cabin the night before. You just need to hang it on your door before you go to bed (before 2.00am).

To order room service at any other time, you can use the telephone in your cabin by dialling 51. Retreat suite guests can also contact their butler with butlers to order room service.

Complimentary Room Service Breakfast

Celebrity Cruises’ complimentary room service breakfast menu offers: cereals, fruit, bakery items, juices, yoghurt and hot drinks. Take a look at the full list of complimentary breakfast items.

Complimentary breakfast menu

  • Decaffinated coffee
  • Hot chocolate
  • Apple juice
  • Cranberry juice
  • Grapefruit juice
  • Orange juice
  • Prune juice
  • Tomato juice
  • Fruit yoghurt

Dairy alternatives:

  • Lactose-free milk
  • Almond milk
  • Corn Flakes
  • Frosted Flakes
  • Raisin Bran
  • Rice Krispies
  • Assorted fruit plate
  • Assorted Danish pastries
  • Blueberry muffin
  • Bran muffin
  • English muffin
  • French bread
  • Multigrain bread
  • Plain bagel
  • Onion bagel
  • White toast
  • Wholewheat toast

You can choose a specific 30 minute slot for your breakfast to be delivered starting at 6.00am and finishing at 9.30am.

Even though this is a complimentary room service option, we would always recommend tipping a few dollars to the crew member who delivers.

In our opinion, this is a reasonable selection of continental breakfast options and is a good option if you need a quick and simple breakfast early, before heading off on an excursion.

Premium Breakfast

If you fancy enjoying a cooked breakfast in the comfort of your cabin (or perhaps on your balcony), you can order the Premium Breakfast.

The Premium Breakfast has a $9.95 service fee + 20% gratuity so make sure you include everything you want on one order for the best value. Retreat guests and Zenith-level Captain’s Club members not pay a service fee for this breakfast.

The Premium Breakfast includes: eggs, bacon, sausages, French toast and pancakes.

Eggs and omelettes:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Poached eggs on toast
  • Fried eggs (over easy/medium/well done)
  • Boiled eggs (soft/hard)

From the griddle:

  • Link sausage
  • breakfast ham
  • Canadian bacon
  • hash browns
  • French toast
  • Pancakes (plain/banana/blueberry)

Suite guests have a slightly expanded breakfast menu but it is minimal. Overall feedback from passengers staying in suites onboard is very positive regarding the breakfast.

If you are not staying in a suite and don’t want to pay extra for a cooked breakfast, you certainly have a few options on board the cruise ship.

We particularly enjoyed the cooked breakfast served in the dining room and the Oceanview Cafe (buffet). You can also get cooked breakfast items at the Eden Cafe on Edge-class ships.

Celebrity Cruises Room Service Menu

The main room service menu is available from 11.00am to 5.00am and has a $9.95 service fee + 20% gratuity per delivery. On the final night of your cruise, room service finishes at 11.00pm.

You can order room service by telephone in your cabin, just dial 51.

The menu has a mix of light and healthy options, as well as a few naughty items!

Soups and starters:

  • Chicken noodle soup
  • Soup of the day
  • Chicken skewers with yoghurt sauce
  • Fruit plate
  • Caesar salad
  • Mixed green salad (Balsamic, Blue cheese, Caesar, Italian vinaigrette or Ranch dressing)

Main course:

  • Celebrity hamburger with fries
  • Penne Primavera
  • Seared salmon with vegetables
  • Turkey Club sandwich
  • Dark chocolate ganache cake with caramel sauce
  • Cheesecake with blueberry sauce
  • Assorted cookies with milk (warm or cold)
  • Roasted chicken sandwich with fries
  • Grilled hot dog with fires
  • Cheese or pepperoni pizza
  • Chardonnay $10
  • Pino Grigio $10
  • Cabernet Sauvignon $15
  • Pinot Noir $13
  • Champagne $23
  • Heineken $7.50
  • Heineken 0.0% $7
  • Dos Equis $7
  • Lagunitas $11

We thought the menu was small in comparison to other cruise lines like Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises . It’s certainly an option if you really want something to eat in your cabin but we generally opted to grab something from the Oceanview Cafe and take it to our cabin instead.

The kids menu section is a thoughtful touch and there’s nothing stopping adults ordering from this menu too.

Interestingly, this room service menu was complimentary before 2023 and it doesn’t appear to have been enhanced after the service fee was introduced.

The reality is that the room service menu is an option if you find yourself in need of food when you can’t leave (or can’t be bothered to leave) your cabin.

We found plenty of better options in the complimentary dining venues on our cruise to satisfy us with a wider selection at no extra cost. Personally, we would only consider ordering the Premium Breakfast for a special treat to enjoy on our balcony.

Take a look at the most up-to-date Celebrity Cruises room service menu including breakfast options and the service fee.

Celebrity Cruises Main Dining Room Menu + Recent Changes

Changes for celebrity cruises main dining room menus.

Talk to many cruisers who are loyal to Celebrity, and you’ll get a consistent complaint about how the food is not what it once was. In reality, it’s a problem across nearly every major cruise line. Food seems to be where the cutbacks and cost savings are most evident, and people are talking about it!

Unfortunately, Celebrity has been known for exceptional food in the past, so these changes have been more evident than on other lines.

Last year, Celebrity Cruises made hugely unpopular changes to its onboard menus, especially in the Main dining rooms (MDR). Having originally changed the menus to “simplify” the ordering process and allegedly increase customer satisfaction, many people complained about staples of the main dining room experience being removed from menus.

Bringing Customer Favorites Back to the Menus

Celebrity is bringing back some favorites, and adding nightly chocolate dessert options in response to Captain’s Club guest feedback and research showing a desire for menu diversity.

Notable changes to the Celebrity Cruises dining menus:

  • Changes to menus in response to guest feedback and desire for classic items such as Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled chicken, New York sirloin
  • Introduction of nightly chocolate dessert options
  • Changes were expected to be implemented fleet-wide by the end of 2023 (which seems to have mostly happened)

A few things about how the Main Dining Room works with Celebrity (some FAQs)

Is there still a lobster night on celebrity.

Surprisingly, yes! On our last cruise, about halfway through the 7 days, there was a surprise lobster night at no additional charge. If you’re craving lobster, it’s also on one of the menus at Le Petit Chef , and available for an additional charge of about $17 most other nights in the main dining room.

Are there formal nights on Celebrity Cruises?

True formal nights are pretty much a thing of the past, but Celebrity does have a night for “evening chic”

You’ll see a range of cocktail dresses, skirts, and slacks to designer jeans, paired with elegant tops or blazers. Some guests opt for even more formal wear like tuxedos or gowns, especially for onboard photography sessions.

But in reality, you rarely see a Tuxedo anymore.

Most itineraries include one or two “evening chic” evenings. Cruisers who prefer not to partake in Evening Chic (aka Formal Night) can choose Smart Casual wear for dining and theater events.

Is there a dress code in the Main Dining Room (MDR) on Celebrity?

For the most part, smart casual is what is expected.

It is requested for entrance to the main dining area, specialty dining venues, and the Celebrity Theatre passengers wear “Smart Casual”. Smart Casual attire suggests a polished and comfortable look, which can be a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans, complemented by a fashionable top or button-down shirt.

Celebrity says that shorts and flip-flops do not meet the Smart Casual dress standard. In reality, we’ve seen people dine in shorts without a problem. But it is worth noting, we’ve witnessed the restaurant host ask guests to remove baseball hats – so best to leave those behind.

Can you order more than one entree in the Main Dining Room?

Many cruise lines have implemented a charge for multiple main courses. This hasn’t been put in place on Celebrity at this time (but it wouldn’t surprise me if it becomes policy at some point)

Cruise Ship Room Service: Menus and Fees for Cruise Lines

J. Souza

Nothing says “I’m in vacation mode” quite like ordering room service on a cruise ship.

In this article we will see what you can get delivered to your stateroom and how much cruise lines are charging for those wonderful treats sent right to your cabin .

norwegian escape balcony with room service breakfast at sunrise

I remember the days when room service was free on every cruise line and the choices were practically limitless.

But rather than dwell on the glory days of endless food being carted to your cruise cabin, I thought we’d take a look at cruise ship room service today and how each line compares.

We will look at all the mainstream cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean, in addition to premium cruise lines and even luxury lines.

How much does each cruise line charge for room service? What does the menu look like? And what can you still get for free?

We’ll compare some of the major cruise lines and so you can see the difference in room service policies between these companies. Many of these room service policies have changed in the last few months by the way. So if it’s been a while since you’ve gone on a cruise, you might be in for a surprise.

Be mindful that these menus and charges for room service are subject to change, and while we will try to keep this post up to date, you can check directly with the cruise line for any updates for your cruise.

Carnival Cruise Line Room Service

room service for carnival stateroom

Carnival offers 24-hour room service with a breakfast menu and an all-day menu. While the continental breakfast is free, other room service items have an individual charge depending on what you order.

Breakfast :

The breakfast menu does include a continental breakfast that is free of charge, but it’s only available from 6am to 10am.

The free continental breakfast includes fruit, cereal, danishes, toast, bagels, muffins, croissants, and a selection of yogurts, including banana strawberry, raspberry, and plain.

There are also some drinks included like coffee, orange juice, apple juice, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, hot tea, milk, and chocolate milk.

There are no delivery charges but I do recommend tipping the room service attendant.

Check out our article on why I bring cash to a cruise to see more about tipping.

But what if you want a hot breakfast delivered to your door? For that you will have to pay extra but only $5 or $6.

On Carnival’s current room service breakfast menu are items like English muffin sandwiches with bacon and a fried egg, chicken and cheese in a sourdough sandwich, and a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

An 18% service charge is added to your bill for any of these breakfast sandwiches.

All-Day Menu :

The all-day menu is called leisure dining and is offered from 10am to 6am, basically any time outside of breakfast hours.

From sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and wings, the options are all priced individually ranging from a $3 order of fries to an $8 Spicy Fried Firecracker Shrimp plate .

Some of the dessert offerings are New York cheesecake, devils food chocolate cake, and a giant cookie.

The $7 wings and $6 quesadilla are some of my favorite choices, but keep in mind that all of these also come with an 18% service charge.

And while you can get coffee or juice for free at the buffet you will have to pay $2 or $3 to have it delivered to your stateroom. But you can get a whole pot of coffee delivered to your room for $3.

Royal Caribbean Room Service

royal caribbean room service

Royal Caribbean International cruise ships also offer free room service but only for the continental breakfast. The line takes a different approach to room service fees than Carnival and simply charges a $7.95 “convenience fee” for each delivery.

Any guests in the Grand Suites or higher categories will not have to pay the room service charge.

Breakfast is served from 6m to 10am, and the complimentary continental breakfast includes toast, bagels, English muffins, donuts, baked pastries, cereals, fruit and yogurt.

The hot breakfast comes with the $7.95 charge and includes eggs cooked in a variety of ways (including omelettes), pancakes, hash browns, bacon, and sausage.

For times outside of breakfast Royal Caribbean has a nice assortment of pasta, burgers, salads, wings, and pizza.

This can be ordered between 11am and 6am and an 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

Appetizers on the Royal Caribbean room service menu include chicken noodle soup, Cobb salad, Ceasar salad and chicken tenders.

The favorites section has some popular items cruisers love like Rigatoni Bolognese, Grilled Salmon, Grilled Quesadilla, pizza, and wings.

All of the sandwiches you can have delivered come with fries, and these include the Royal Burger, Grilled Cheese, a Hot Dog Your Way, and even a Classic Philly Cheesesteak.

Also, Royal Caribbean has a kid’s section on the menu as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line Room Service

Norwegian Escape balcony with room service breakfast on tray with sunrise

Norwegian offers 24-hour room service and has recently added some changes to its room service fees. NCL has begun adding a $4.95 service fee for what was a free continental breakfast option before.

The continental breakfast includes the same kind of items on other lines like fruit, pastries, cereal, and yogurt. Breakfast can be per-ordered by filling out a door hanger which also allows passengers to specify a preferred time for their breakfast to be delivered. This door-hanger must be placed outside your cabin by 4am the previous day.

Some of the breakfast offerings by Norwegian include omelettes, steak & eggs, avocado toast, french toast and breakfast smoothies.

Norwegian has claimed to have expanded the options available on the room service menu including breakfast offerings, but a $9.95 convenience charge will be added to each order in addition to a 20% gratuity service charge. Only the continental breakfast will be exempt, although guests will still have to pay the $4.95 service fee. There are some reports that this is not fleet wide yet, so keep an eye out for news related to Norwegian room service.

Guests in the Haven will not have to pay the $9.95 charge.

The all-day menu will include items like chicken noodle soup, Caesar salad, Cobb salad, a cheese plates, BLTs, all kinds of sub sandwiches, and hot dogs.

Some entrees you can order to your room include Spaghetti Bolognase, Half Roasted Chicken, Skirt Steak, Grilled Salmon, Fish & Chips, and pizza.

For special occasions you can order a jumbo shrimp platter for $35 or even a selection of international cheeses with bread, walnuts and grapes for $32.

MSC Cruises Room Service

MSC Cruises room service pizza on a plate

Room service with MSC comes with a $4.99 charge per delivery for those with the lowest “experience” chosen, the Bella Experience. With the Fantastica Experience breakfast is delivered for free, and with the Aurea Experience there is free delivery 24-hours a day.

Besides this delivery fee there is the cost of the options in the menu, and the room service menu has both free and paid options.

Some of the room service selections with MSC include garden vegetable soup, a variety of cheeses, Mediterranean salad, Caesar salad, veggie wraps, smoked salmon sandwich, a fruit plate, and even a fruit basket just to name a few.

The Italian cruise line promises to have a fresh-baked pizza delivered to your cabin within 20 minutes of ordering. This can cost around $11 or $12 depending on what kind of pizza you get.

And when it comes to pizza, MSC has a myriad of choices. You can get everything from Mariana and Toscana to Calabrese and 4 Formaggi. Even a Calzone Napoletano was available last time I checked.

If you’re in the MSC Yacht Club you will not have to worry about any room service fees as the service is complimentary as well.

Princess Cruises Room Service

room service on princess cruises

Princess has 24-hour room service offered to all its guests. Breakfast is from 6:30am to 10:30am, you can get pizza from 5:30 to 9:30pm and the specialty dining menu is from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

For the most part room service is free, but there are some items that will cost extra if you want to ramp up your cruise vacation experience.

You can actually order a selection of dishes to your room that are from the specialty restaurants on board. From appetizers to main entrees these fees can range from $5 to $20.

This allows you to have Filet Mignon, Rib-eye steak and Jumbo Prawn delivered from Crown Grill for about $19 each.

Even pasta dishes from Sabatini’s can be delivered through room service, and you can select from the many desserts as well.

Using the app or stateroom TV allows you to sort through the many choices you have, and you can see all the up to date prices there, as they may change by the time you go on your cruise.

Some of the categories of food you will find in the app are appetizers & snacks, hot food, sandwiches, sides, sweets, kids, pizza, and specialty dining.

To have a shrimp cocktail delivered to your room will cost $8.

Celebrity Cruises Room Service

Celebrity cruises balcony room service

At the end of 2022, Celebrity made a major policy change in regards to room service. Each delivery now costs $9.95 with an additional 18% gratuity charge on top of it. (So basically $11.74 for every room service order)

Prior to this change room service was free and cruisers were only charged $4.95 when ordering after 11 p.m.

In keeping in line with some of the mainstream lines, however, a continental breakfast is still free between 6am and 11am.

Additionally, Zenith-level members and suite guests will still be able to get food delivered for free.

Passengers staying in the retreat will get free room service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Holland America Room Service

pizza on a plate on Eurodam Holland America

This is one of the last premium/mainstream cruise lines that still offers free room service. Only a few select items cost extra.

Breakfast is available from 6am to 11am and there’s more than just the continental breakfast that is complimentary.

Besides the usual cereal, fruit, pastries and yogurt, Holland America guests can have eggs, hash browns, bacon and sausage sent to their staterooms for free.

If you do want to splurge for breakfast there is a Lobster Benedict for $12.50, a Steak and Eggs breakfast for $15, and breakfast smoothies for $4.95.

The All Day menu offered by Holland America is loaded with starters, sandwiches, entrees and sweets.

Starters : Quesadilla, Cheese and Fruit, Chicken Noodle Soup, Three Bean Chili, Caesar Salad, and Cobb Salad

Sandwiches : Caprese Panini, Roast Beef Panini, BBQ Pulled Pork Sub, Club Sandwich

Sweets : New York Cheesecake, Fresh Fruit, Chocolate Layer Cake, Chocolate Chip Cookies

Entrees : Rigatoni, Oven-Roasted Chicken

From 11pm to 6am guests are able to have a smaller sampling of the above menu with foods like quesadillas and club sandwiches in addition to salads and some sweet desserts.

There’s also a kid’s menu available for room service that is available from 5:30pm until 9:30pm.  This menu for children includes quesadillas, fruit, salad, mac and cheese, spaghetti, hot dogs and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Virgin Voyages Room Service

Luxury Cruise Line Room Service

Luxury cruise lines still offer complimentary room service, and that hopefully will not be changing any time soon. Cruise lines like Viking, Seabourn, Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas all have a wide assortment of menu options for food delivery, and you never have to worry about a convenience charge, unless it’s a specialty item.

Yes and no.  Carnival still offers free room service, but it’s only for the continental breakfast.  The rest of the menu is more à la carte and each item has a cost from $3 to $8.  This is in addition to the 18% service fee.

Does Royal Caribbean charge for room service?

Yes, but just like mentioned above, Royal Caribbean still offers breakfast room service for free if it’s a continental breakfast.  There is a standard $7.95 charge and additional fee of 18% for gratuities.

How much is room service on Norwegian?

Norwegian still does offer room service but you can’t get it for free any more.  Even the continental breakfast comes with a $4.95 service fee and the other select menu items will cost $9.95 plus a 20% gratuity charge.

Can I order room service any time of day?

Pretty much.  But the menu may be different depending on what time of day you decide to order.  Most cruise lines have 24-hour room service and breakfast is not offered until around 6am the next morning.  So for late-night snacks, room service is still the way to go.

How do I order room service on a cruise ship?

Each cruise line is different but most these days have an app that is the easiest way to order room service.  This will also allow you to see the complete menu and if there is any extra cost per item.  Some lines also let you order room service through the stateroom TV.  For breakfast many cruise lines provide door-hangers that you can fill out and place outside your stateroom before 4am each night.

How much should you tip for room service on a cruise ship?

It’s all up to you but I like to tip about $2 – $3 per item, depending on how large the order is.  This is also why I like to have some small bills in cash on me when I cruise.  If you order a lot of room service go ahead and let the delivery attendant know how much you appreciate their service.

Keep in mind that this also depends on which cruise you are sailing, as some luxury lines may include all gratuities.

Celebrity Cruise Gratuities (Tips): Full Guide to Cost & How They Work

When it comes to cruising Celebrity, just like with other lines, gratuity charges are a part of life. If you’ve cruised before, then you’re familiar with these charges, which can add up to hundreds of dollars on your cruise.

If you haven’t cruised — or you haven’t sailed on Celebrity — then there are a number of things you should know about the daily gratuity charges as they add up to a significant expense on your trip.

Celebrity cruise ship

In This Article...

What are gratuities on a cruise anyway?

First and foremost, before we get to the details of the gratuity charges on Celebrity, it’s helpful to understand just what gratuities are. If you haven’t sailed before, they can be a surprise.

These charges are a pre-set amount that acts as a tip that’s paid by each passenger and then distributed to the crew. In the old days of cruising, these tips were done via cash put in envelopes and handed to the crew by passengers at the end of the trip.

Today, it’s all done automatically through your onboard account. So instead of making sure you’ve tipped everyone who has offered service during this cruise, it’s all wrapped up into one payment.

How much are gratuities on a Celebrity cruise?

As a higher-end cruise line, Celebrity charges slightly more than what’s seen by larger “mass market” lines. Still, the rate is comparable.

As of now, Celebrity charges between $17.50 to $21.00 per person, per day, depending on the room that you book:

  • $17.50 USD per person, per day for Inside, Ocean View, and Veranda cabins
  • $18.00 USD per person, per day for Concierge Class and AquaClass cabins
  • $21.00 USD per person, per day for those staying in The Retreat.

Note that as of July 2022 those staying in Retreat or AquaClass rooms have the gratuity amount included with the cruise fare.

These rates can add up. Consider a couple traveling in a balcony (Veranda) cabin. In this case, they would each pay $17.50 per day. That comes out to the following based on the length of the cruise:

  • 3 Days: $105.00
  • 4 Days: $140.00
  • 5 Days: $175.00
  • 6 Days: $210.00
  • 7 Days: $245.00

( You can use our gratuity calculator here to see how much tips will be on your cruise .)

As you can see, the amount paid can be a significant added expense to your cruise.

Who has to pay gratuities on the cruise?

Some (not all) cruise lines offer a break on gratuities for young children. Celebrity does not. All passengers on the cruise — regardless of age — are charged the daily amount. So a family of four taking a cruise will see a charge for each individual, not just the adults.

How do I pay the gratuities?

When it comes to payment, you have several options.

First, you can prepay the gratuity charge when you book your cruise. It’s as simple as checking a box and having the price added on to your cruise fare. Some people prefer this way as it gets the charge out of the way. Others prefer to delay paying the gratuity charges until they are on the ship.

Second, as mentioned you can wait until you are on the ship to pay the gratuity. In that case, they will be charged to your onboard account, and paid with the payment method on file at the end of the cruise.

The third way to pay is with Celebrity’s All Included offer . With this deal, when you book your cruise you have the ability to just buy the base fare or the All Included fare, which is more expensive. But this offer includes a drink package, wi-fi, and gratuities with the price of the cruise, meaning they are taken care of instead of being an additional, separate charge.

Can I change the amount owed? What if I receive bad service?

For some people, the idea of having to pay a gratuity charge before you’ve even stepped on the ship is strange. Others worry about having to pay a charge if they actually receive poor service while on the ship (frankly, this is unlikely to happen). No matter, some people want to know if you can adjust the gratuity amount owed.

According to Celebrity’s website, “automatic daily gratuities may be adjusted at the guest’s discretion onboard at Guest Relations.”

That said, unless there is something genuinely wrong with the service on the ship, it’s generally considered poor taste to lower the gratuity amount. While some may not agree with the charge, it still goes to help compensate the crew.

What staff/crew is covered by the gratuities?

While a detailed breakdown of how the money paid is divided among crew isn’t available, Celebrity says the following regarding the charge:

“Gratuities for stateroom and restaurant services are shared by dining, bar and culinary services staff, stateroom attendants, and other hotel services teams.”

So it will cover most spots around the ship, but not all.

Does Celebrity’s gratuity charge cover everyone on the ship? Are there other places to pay a tip?

In general, the gratuity charge covers most places on the ship such as in the dining rooms and your cabin steward. However, there are some places on the ship where you will see an additional tip charge. This is usually anywhere you pay extra for a service like a bar or the spa.

Celebrity charges and 18% additional gratuity on spa and salon purchases. As well, specialty dining sees an 18% rate as well.

Bar services — like the beverage package — see a 20% gratuity rate on purchases.

Is there anything else to know about Celebrity’s gratuities?

Earlier, the All Included rate was mentioned for trips aboard Celebrity. With this rate, you pay a higher cruise fare, but a drink package, wi-fi, and the gratuity is included in the fare.

For some passengers, this rate will make a lot of sense but you’ll want to do the math. You’ll want to compare the extra amount you’ll pay for the All Included fare, but then back out the cost of the items included, such as the gratuities.

For example, if the base rate for a 7-day cruise is $1,000 per person, and the All Included rate is $1,300, then you can back out $122.50 for gratuities from the $300 difference, meaning you’re paying $177.50 for a drink package and wi-fi.

Cruise ship room service: A line-by-line guide to in-cabin dining

Kristy Tolley

There are few better places to be when hunger strikes than on a cruise ship. If the buffet is busy with people or packed away, 24-hour room service is always available to fill your belly. It's one of the greatest cruising amenities that's uniformly offered on all major cruise lines. No need to dress up for dinner — just order food, flip on your cabin TV and wait for your meal to arrive.

Wondering what you can order and how much it will cost you? Here's a line-by-line overview of room service options and pricing across the major cruise lines, along with in-cabin dining menus.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

How do I order room service on a cruise ship?

Just pick up your in-cabin phone and dial the room service number to order food. Easy!

Some cruise lines offer the option to order your food and drinks through your in-cabin TV or a smartphone app, which populates photos of the menu items. Some cruise line apps even have location-specific features that allow you to order food and drinks for delivery almost anywhere on the ship.

Breakfast is often ordered by filling out a pre-printed menu card left in your cabin and hanging it outside your door before you go to bed. Crew members collect the orders during the night and deliver your food the next morning at the time you specified.

What types of food can I order to my cabin?

Many cruise lines offer a complimentary continental breakfast delivery, which typically includes pastries, bread, fruit, yogurt and coffee and tea. You can order hot breakfast items like eggs, pancakes and bacon, but they cost extra on select lines or in specific cabin categories.

After breakfast service ends in the late morning, all major cruise lines offer an all-day room service menu of salads, sandwiches, snacks and desserts. Most cruise lines have special in-room dining menus separate from what you'd find that day on the buffet or in the main dining room.

However, some of the more upscale lines and some select concierge cabin classes offer comprehensive in-suite dining menus, often with the convenience of ordering off the menu from the main dining room or specialty restaurants on board. This elevated in-room dining experience might include a white tablecloth setup and your meal delivered course by course to your cabin or suite.

You can access additional specialty food experiences from room service operations. These include fresh pizza delivery as seen on Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, a cutting-edge app feature for Champagne delivery on Virgin Voyages and lobster and caviar deliveries from luxury cruise lines such as Silversea Cruises.

Is room service free on a cruise ship?

celebrity cruises room service charge 2023

While most land-based hotels charge a premium for any food delivered to your room, cruise ships have a long legacy of including room service in their fares. Many cruisers' favorite amenity is the 24-hour complimentary access to generic yet classic menu items such as fresh fruit, a cheese plate or a club sandwich, not to mention continental breakfast.

Recent changes in the economics of cruising have sunset the glory days of unlimited, complimentary room service on several of the most popular cruise lines. Service fees and menus dominated by a la carte options are now the new norms across the industry.

Still, the fees are often considerably less than at comparable land-based resorts, and continental breakfast items are commonly free of charge (with the exception of MSC's lowest cabin class, which charges a per-item and service fee for breakfast service).

How much does room service cost?

Depending on the cruise line and your cabin class, room service can be a complimentary all-inclusive service, billed per item or charged at a flat delivery fee. Most lines will offer complimentary continental breakfast options through room service with no service fee, even if other options cost extra.

Luxury lines, including Seabourn, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, always include 24-hour room service as a standard amenity.

Delivery service fees per order can reach up to $9.95, the per-order rate currently on Norwegian Cruise Line's non-suite class cabins. A la carte prices average around $5 per item, whether that's a hot breakfast or a midday sandwich.

For example, on Carnival's new a la carte room service menu, salads cost $4 to $5 (with additional fees for adding proteins), sandwiches $5 to $7, snacks like pizza and chicken tenders $6 to $8 and dessert $3 to $5.

Do you have to tip for room service on a cruise?

On no-tipping lines, such as Seabourn and Silversea, crew members are compensated appropriately, and you do not need to tip for room service. On lines where guests are expected to tip crew members, determine first if a gratuity is automatically included in your room service order or delivery fee. If it's not, a small tip is always appreciated.

Depending on what you order and the line, you might not have the chance to sign a bill for your room service order, which could be a missed opportunity to add a tip. Come prepared with small bills to offer in appreciation of the service, as you'll find the room service staff works hard to expedite many meals around the ship.

Looks like Tito’s and Jameson have been reclassified from classic to premium!!??

I love me some Tito’s, but it definitely isn’t a premium vodka 😅

I’m not sure when this change will take place, as I was served Tito’s during our Nov 12-19th cruise on the classic package

These are the two that I noticed as well. I also drink Tito’s and while I agree that it’s not premium, there are restaurants around us that charge an up charge for it. Jameson used to be on the premium package. They moved it to classic and now back to premium.

It’s tons better than Absolut….doesn’t bother me either way, I always sail with Premium…signing slips isn’t my jam.

That said, if the Wild Turkey isn’t 101, it’s not worth drinking.

tfred

I don't see any Macallan whisky on the premium list. That would be disturbing to me

Jameson is definitely not a premium whisky. X probably moves some of these to premium so pax will upgrade to get what they are used to drinking at home

Pretty sure Macallan was on the premium package on Equinox. It was the Quest travel edition. Kind of forgettable...

As a whisk(e)y drinker, the near constant price increases may also be pushing some of those into "premium". And not all "premium" spirits are $17; for cash purchase quite a few were well under the max price of the premium band Which makes sense. You've got Makers (about $35/bottle in Virginia), Glenlivet ($60), and at least last week Macallan ($85 locally, but not Quest). The ship is using a lot of travel editions and is a duty-free importer but that's a pretty broad price range for spirits in the same category. Jameson is about the same price as Maker's here, so they would be in the same band but probably priced closer to $11 than $17 (I don't remember and can't find a list in the app).

in florida at Total Wine most of the premium whisky on the list go for $30-35 for a 750. Macallan goes for $75. The Ablefeldy is the most interesting to me here. Dewars 12 is good but is my everday scotch

we were in The Retreat last year and they had different liquors than the martini bar. We will be on Apex Retreat in January - maybe they will have something fun up there

The Retreat can get anything onboard, at least up to the premium package. Biggest challenge is finding what’s onboard.

I do think the specialty bars are better set up for many if not most cocktails. But neat whisky is perfect for the Retreat!

I have no room to speak ill of Tito's, since more often than not that's the brand I have stocked in my home bar. But to call it premium is quite a stretch  😂

JeanieC,Aston

First Guinness now Jameson’s,,,penny pinching of the worst kind.

Go into a local package store and you'll find that bottles if almost anything are going up just about weekly.

Jameson is like turpentine.  It’s worse than Johnnie Walker Red.  Premium?  I can only say one thing.

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

ETHTrader

LOL Jameson is premium?

Come on now.

A few cruises ago my wife ordered a Moscow Mule with Russian Standard.    The server said it is a premium vodka and would be a $10 up charge over our premium beverage package.   No thanks.  Russian Standard is not a premium vodka.

Just got off of the Silhouette and Blanton was a $4 up charge over the premium package, Basil Hayden was about a  $10 up charge ????

No rhyme or reason in their pricing.

Ketel One has now replaced Grey Goose in the Martini Bar for most martinis

The photo must be a real premium Vodka that was being sold in a Caribbean port.  Notice the price is $55 but it was duty free 😱 🤗 .   I think it  sells at Costco for $19 or $29 at the most.

Happy cruising 🌊 🚢 🇺🇸 🌅

Not always true.   Recently got off of the Silhouette.   There was Woodford Double Oak in some bars.   The BT said he couldn’t get it.   It didn’t have anything about tipping him as I did it often.   I think if you are in a Royal Suite or above they may make special accommodations.   There was one couple that mentioned to the BT that they were the ones that had some special scotch on another cruise.    I asked him about it and he said that when they were in a port that scotch was purchased for them.   He didn’t give any further details.  They must have been in a cheaper suite as he didn’t give them anything special.   We spent a lot of time in the Retreat Lounge and seen them there a few times and they got the scotch off of the rack.

OK. They've always offered to get anything. I guess it's almost anything.

Same as MLB and probably every other sports venue in the US. For MLB, it's all AB/INBEV so the "standard" beers (which are also badly overpriced) are Bud/Bud Light/Michelob/Michelob Ultra. Blue Moon is a premium beer. In some bizarre parallel universe. Don't get me started...

Celebrity is no better or worse.

Was on Beyond last winter and a lady asked the BT at the Sunset Bar for a Blue Moon, she didn’t have a drink package and he said that it would be $11. She was shocked and said she should of bought the package since it was only day one. Not sure if she eventually bought the package.

Sorry to see Tito’s go to premium, I was able to get a double each time I ordered it last winter with the premium package.

I will pay that $4 upcharge on Blanton's. Any upcharge on Hayden is hilarious imo
