Culture and customs.

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Western influences (particularly in Amman and other large cities) have infiltrated Jordanian society so Jordan now possesses a mix of Arabian customs amid modern ways of life. Due to immigration, Jordan now has a significant Palestinian and Iraqi population, adding to the cultural diversity of the country.

Despite the outside influences, Islamic traditions are strong in Jordan with spectacular mosques signaling the call to prayer five times a day, Ramadan being observed each year and some segregation of the sexes occurring.

The desert-dwelling Bedouin have a distinct culture of their own, drawing on traditions that have been passed down for centuries. Living a largely nomadic lifestyle, the Bedouin rely on the herding of animals and the creation of handicrafts in the absence of a fertile environment to farm. With a strong musical heritage, traditional instruments are played and time-honored traditions are continued.

Hospitality is a crucial element of Jordanian culture. Most visitors will be humbled by the kindness, sincerity and genuine care showed by Jordanians. Being welcomed into peoples’ homes is common, and can probably be attributed to the custom of welcoming strangers and sharing food when traveling in the unforgiving desert.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Featuring typical Middle Eastern ingredients like lamb, chickpeas, garlic and a range of aromatic herbs and spices, Jordanian cuisine is delicious.

Things to try in Jordan

Like many other Middle Eastern countries, a plate of shared breads and dips is a great way to begin a feast.

This traditional Bedouin dish of lamb and yogurt is usually served with rice and bread. This is the national dish of Jordan, so definitely try it before you leave.

These small, sweet pastries made with honey and nuts will have you going back for more.

The coffee in Jordan is strong. Often spiced with a hint of cardamom, coffee is strongly linked to the famed Jordanian hospitality, so drink up – it would be rude not to!

Geography and environment

Jordan is made up of a staggeringly diverse range of natural environments. From stark deserts to towering mountains, fertile wetlands, coastal reefs and urban cities, journeying through Jordan provides changing scenery and varying conditions.

Sharing borders with Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Jordan mixes modern architecture with heritage-filled buildings, well-manicured streets with historic alleyways and impressive mansions with simple homes.

Modern, developed cities like Amman and Aqaba feature unique architecture, spectacular mosques, five-star hotels and resorts. Small villages with rustic housing populate the less-built-up rural areas and Bedouin tents made of goat hair can be found in desert areas.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Jordan was originally inhabited by the Nabataeans thousands of years ago. Over the centuries, Jordan has been a place conquered and inhabited by many different people including the Romans, Greeks, Assyrians, Ottoman Turks, Egyptians and Mamluks (people of Kurdish origins). All these influences can still be seen today in Jordan's ancient ruins, architecture, crafts and arts. Many battles were fought in Ancient Jordan, including the Christian crusaders who clashed with Islamic Forces in Jordan during the 11th and 12th centuries. The first Muslim Dynasty began with the Umayyad Empire in 661.

Recent history

In 1950, Jordan was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and in 1951, King Abdullah I was assassinated while visiting a mosque. His eldest son became king but was removed from his duties in 1952 due to mental illness. In 1953, his teenage son Hussein Ibn Talal became king, and continued to rule for over 40 years. In the 1960s, Jordan saw many immigrants arrive and settle – mainly Palestinians escaping the conflict in their homeland.

In 1999, King Abdullah II succeeded his father King Hussein and continues to rule Jordan now. His reign has been characterized by liberal policies, economic reforms and technological advances. His wife, Queen Rania of Jordan, has a visible public profile, is active in many social causes and is regarded internationally as a highly influential woman.

Visas are required by all visitors entering Jordan.

It can be significantly more expensive to acquire your visa from the embassy in your home country.

If you require a stay longer than 14 days, visas obtained from the embassy in your home country will be valid for two months.

When is the best time to visit Jordan?

The weather in Jordan can get quite extreme. Overall, it tends to be hot during the day and cold at night (in desert areas, expect it to be extremely hot during the day and freezing at night). Yet during winter it can get bitterly cold, with snowfall occurring in some parts of the country.

Traveling during the summer months (June, July and August) can be challenging for those not accustomed to the heat, so visiting Jordan during spring and autumn is recommended for those who wish to escape the hotter temperatures.

Is tipping customary in Jordan?

Internet access is growing rapidly in Jordan. Internet can usually be accessed from hotels and internet cafes in major cities. Expect little to no access in small towns, villages and other rural areas.

As a Muslim country, Jordan’s culture is quite conservative, although not as conservative as some other Middle Eastern countries. Homosexuality has been decriminalized in Jordan since 1951, and while Jordanians who identify as having an LGBTQIA+ identity will not be criminalized, many people continue to hide their sexuality or identity from their families, and there is still a deep social stigma. As long as LGBTQIA+ travelers display some discretion and respect for local culture, particularly when visiting places outside of the major cities and tourist areas, they will have no problem visiting Jordan.

Jordan - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Holidays to Jordan will be incomplete without a visit to Petra

Located at the crossroads of Asia , Africa , and Europe , Jordan is a representation of all of the intersections that occur in that crossroads. Once home to Romans and Ottomans, holidays to Jordan will bring you its rich history and culture filled with color, heart, and vibrancy. Bordered by Iraq, Iran , Saudi Arabia, and Israel , a trip to Jordan has something for all travel bugs.

Tour Highlights

  • Visit the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, and go back in time to when things were a little simpler; if that’s not enough, it’s a modern Wonder of the World.
  • Experience the viciously natural cycle of Wadi Rum, a desert that is a day away from Aqaba and Petra.
  • Swim with the fishes in the Red Sea.
  • See wildlife and scenery that is ancient while remaining timeless at the Dana Biosphere Reserve.
  • Live in the dichotomy of the city of Amman ; urbane and modern in the West, and earthy and ancient in the East.

Travel Tips

  • Other than covering yourself appropriately — men with legs covered and women with arms, legs, and hair covered —there aren’t many customs that you need to worry about.
  • It is a very safe place to be; none of the revolts or riots have spilled over from its neighbors. However, being a tourist, one needs to follow the usual safety precautions.
  • Bring good walking shoes and breathable clothing; it’s hot and you’re going to be doing a lot of walking.
  • Water is safe to drink, although it is heavily chlorinated so it might taste bad; just to be safe, stick with bottled water and pasteurized milk.
  • Be aware of your sun limits; the sun is brutal and you could get badly sunburnt, or worse, pass out from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
  • If you need it, healthcare in Jordan is generally good, and there are hospitals in big cities and clinics in smaller villages.

Jordan has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Jordan before planning your tour. If you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Jordan, do check out our Jordan Travel Guide for more information.

  • Unveil the hidden jewel of Amman:  Discover the traditional and conservative energy of Jordan's hilly capital, which is home to world-class museums, labyrinthine souks, and beautiful Islamic architecture. Amman is a charming, underrated travel destination that can introduce you to Jordan’s rich heritage. Visit the Jordan Archeological Museum and the city's Citadel. Visit the Royal Automobile Museum nearby the Roman Theater, or the Jordan Museum to learn more about the country’s past. Then, escape Amman's chaotic traffic and unwind on Rainbow Street before exploring the city's vibrant nightlife.
  • Travel back in time to Petra:  Petra, also known as the "Rose City," thrives with its multicolored sandstone and authentic Nabatean architecture in the windswept landscape of southern Jordan. The city draws lots of hikers, nature lovers, and, of course, those seeking an escape from the hectic modern lifestyle. From the Obelisk Tomb and Bab AL-Siq Tricilinium, begin your 1200-meter journey and pause at the Al-Khazneh Treasury, then continue your hike along the Wadi Farusa trail while marveling at the royal tombs and admiring the Treasury from the Jebel Al-Khubtha Trail. You can also visit Colonnaded Street, the Great Temple, the Petra Churches, and Little Petra while on a tour of Petra .
  • Enjoy a rejuvenating dip in the Dead Sea:  The Dead Sea, which borders Jordan and Israel, is 67 kilometers long and 18 kilometers wide, boasting a stunning location. At this exceptional location, you can enjoy relaxing activities like soaking in thermal hot springs, thrilling hike-swims, and much more, in addition to simply relaxing in the water. Unwind in the waters of the lowest point on Earth while enjoying therapeutic spa services that have a distinct Dead Sea feel. On a wet hike, visit the ruins of Mukawir and explore the Wadi Mujib canyon. Visit Lot's Cave Monastery and Sodom and Gomorrah on the way to the Lisan Peninsula. And do not forget to take a dip in the Hammamat Ma'in Thermal Springs and sit on a ridge to admire the expansive Dead Sea panorama.
  • Follow the steps of Jesus Christ at Holy Land:  A revitalizing Holy Land tour not only satisfies your spiritual aspirations and curiosities but also allows you to experience its historical significance. A trip to the Holy Land is not complete without going to the Great Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Visit Mount Nebo, where Moses could see Canaan, and rediscover Bethany Beyond the Jordan, where Jesus was baptized. Swing by Jabar Mar-Elias, the site of Elijah's ascension, or take the Jordan Trail past the ruins of Gadara, the site of the Gadarene swine miracle. If you really want to get lost in the stories of the Bible, head to Jordan and stay in Amman, Jerash, Tel Mar Elias, or Pella.
  • Discover the thrilling adventures of Wadi Rum:  In southern Jordan, near the Saudi Arabian border, this 74,200-hectare reserve flourishes as a mixed cultural and natural site. Explore Wadi Rum and its narrow gorges, ramps, natural arches, massive landslides and caverns, and towering cliffs are evidence of millions of years of landscape evolution. Camel rides, hikes, 4WD rides, camping, and a variety of other exciting activities are available among these shifting desert landscapes. While camping in Wadi Rum, you can stargaze and watch the landscape change throughout the night. Climb the beautiful Little Bridge or Burdah rock bridge for a breathtaking view of the desert. Hike through the canyon of Abu Khashaba and eat a traditional Bedouin lunch. Sandboarding on the Al Hasany dunes is a must-do activity.
  • Tick off the highlights in Madaba: Visit Madaba , a friendly market town, that is known for its collection of Byzantine-era mosaics and has one of Jordan's largest Christian populations. This vibrantly colored city encompasses numerous attractions through its historical sites and offers a hearty Jordanian experience. Visit St. George's Church to see the amazing Mosaic map and the Church of Apostles to see the inscribed figures of 12 apostles. View the entire city and the Jordan River from the top of Mount Nebo, or visit Carpet City for the best quality and most beautiful carpets. And if you happen to be in Madaba on a Friday, you will be able to witness the town's long tradition of joyfully and loudly expressing its religious tolerance at dawn.

Most foreign visitors need a visa to enter Jordan, although some nationalities can apply for a visa on arrival. We advise that you research Jordan’s visa requirements for your country before making travel arrangements.

Even though the official language of Jordan is Arabic, English is widely spoken in the country. Besides Arabic, English and a number of minority languages, you can also find French and German-speaking people in Jordan.

March to May are the busiest tourist months to visit Jordan. September to February is also ideal for travel due to the generally good weather, except for the biting cold nights in the desert areas. However, the  best time to visit Jordan  is between March and May, when the weather is perfect, even when you want to travel to the desert.

The 8 most incredible places to visit in Jordan

Sunny Fitzgerald

Nov 28, 2023 • 9 min read

Ancient ruins, Jerash.

Explore the very best of Jordan with this guide to the top places to visit © Hamdan Owidah / 500px

There are many good reasons to put  Jordan on your travel wish list.

Beyond the well-known (and justly famous) cliff-carved city of Petra , visitors here can explore the friendly villages and forested trails of Jordan’s north, the ancient ruins in Amman , and the mind-bending Mars-like desertscapes of Wadi Rum . Jordan is a fabulous destination for travelers with an adventurous spirit and an interest in Arab history and culture.

The intensity here – of the weather , traffic and terrain – can be overwhelming for first-time visitors , yet if you let go of your expectations and embrace all that Jordan offers, you’ll find warm hospitality and unique experiences  that you’ll treasure forever.

Each of Jordan’s regions offer destinations with much to see and do (and eat!). Here are eight of the best places to visit in Jordan.

1. Umm Qais

Best place for hiking and nature

Located about two hours north of Amman, Umm Qais is an ideal base for exploring northern Jordan with its forested trails, farm-to-fork meals, warm hospitality and archaeological sites complete with sweeping views of the surrounding area.

We recommend seeking out local experiences (from an experienced operator like  Baraka Destinations ) – imagine exploring the Greco-Roman ruins of Gadara , foraging with a local farmer, cooking with a Jordanian chef, cycling the countryside with a local guide or harvesting honey with a local beekeeper. This variety of activities means Umm Qais is an excellent destination for all types of visitors, including families, couples and solo travelers.

Nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice, too, with the Yarmouk Forest Reserve – a favorite of savvy locals like mountaineer Mohammed Ziad Abdullatif – within easy reach. Abdullatif suggests hiring a local guide through the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature or a tour operator such as Baraka Destinations. An expert can introduce you to the flora and fauna, and (if you’re lucky) prepare shai (tea) to share in the shade of the deciduous oak trees that grow here.

Planning tip:  Umm Qais is also the starting point for the Jordan Trail . You can book a guided day hike from here to Arab Dam – we recommend  Experience Jordan . Trek this northern section in the springtime for the highest chance of seeing the region carpeted in wildflowers.

A male hiker stares up at bands of rock in a slot canyon in Wadi Ghuweir, one of the longest wadis in the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan

2. Dana Biosphere Reserve

Best region for nature and wildlife

Dana Biosphere Reserve , Jordan’s largest, contains mountains, wadis, more than 600 plant species, nearly 200 bird species, rare mammals such as the Syrian wolf and Nubian ibex and an archaeological site. Local hikers recommend this area for its unique ecology, varied terrain, incredible views and serenity.

Visitors can make Feynan Ecolodge their home base before connecting with Bedouin culture and the land through locally led experiences such as grazing goats with a shepherd, hiking in the wadis with a Bedouin guide, baking arbood bread, learning about medicinal plants and making Arabic coffee over a fire.

For intrepid travelers looking to stay out under the stars, multi-day hikes in Dana and on the Jordan Trail’s Dana-to-Petra section can be arranged.

Best place for archaeology fans

An easy day trip from Amman, Jerash is home to Gerasa , one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. You don’t have to be a history or archaeology buff to appreciate the beauty of this impressive site, but it is helpful to hire a guide either on-site or in advance through a tour operator such as Engaging Cultures , as signage is limited.

Since the Forum , lined by stone columns, is a can’t-miss and is best viewed from above, be sure to take the steps up to the Temple of Zeus for a panoramic view of the ancient city, with modern-day Jerash in the background.

This region is also known for superior olives and olive oil, with some of the olive trees believed to be hundreds of years old. If you’re traveling to Jordan in September or October, book a multi-day trip with Engaging Cultures that includes an olive harvest experience, lunch and an overnight stay with a local family in nearby Orjan, as well as a visit to Ajloun Castle .

Planning tip:  The site at Jerash is vast, so plan accordingly. Count on a minimum of three hours to see the main sights, plus additional time to explore more and take photos. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection.

A wide view of dense apartment blocks on a hillside in Amman, Jordan, at sunset

Best place for urban adventures

Don’t make the mistake of just passing through the capital city.  Amman is well worth getting to know. More than just a gateway to the country, it’s Jordan’s heartbeat, pulsing with the energy of the old and new, and millennia of history and culture.

If you only have one day in Amman, you’ve got to go straight to the top. Visit the highest hill in the city to find the Citadel , an archaeological site that includes Umayyad Palace and the remaining pillars of the Temple of Hercules. Enjoy 360-degree views and respite from the cars and crowds below.

What goes up must come down – and when you do descend, make a stop at the Roman Theater before wandering Al Balad, the buzzing downtown district where you’ll find souvenir shops, street souks, argileh (shisha) cafes and vendors serving up fresh falafel and kunafeh (a Middle Eastern cheese pastry topped with nuts and syrup). Take a stroll on Rainbow Street before ending the evening on a high note with a sunset dinner at one of the city’s rooftop bars or restaurants.

If you have two days in Amman, learn more about the country’s history at the Jordan Museum or dive into Jordanian culture hands first with an interactive class such as a cooking lesson at female-run Beit Sitti or an olive-oil-soap-making workshop at Mosaic House .

Best place for ancient Christian sites

Just 20 minutes from Queen Alia International Airport, Madaba is a convenient and quiet place to rest your head on arrival in Jordan. A friendly and welcoming town for visitors of all faiths, Madaba is home to one of the largest Christian communities in Jordan.

You’ll find several churches in town; visit  St George’s Church  to admire one of the oldest known maps of the Holy Land, made of mosaic tiles in 560 CE.

Planning tip:  While in the region, save time for a visit to Mt Nebo , just 15 minutes from Madaba. It’s believed Moses saw the Promised Land from the mountain’s summit – a view you can take in, too. Atop the mountain, some of Jordan’s most prized mosaics can be seen at Moses Memorial Church, while a small on-site museum highlights the place’s history.

A man wearing sunglasses and a dark Speedo floats on his back in the salty blue waters of the Dead Sea, Israel

6. The Dead Sea

Best place for natural healing

Soak and scrub your worries away with a spa experience on the Jordanian shores of the Dead Sea. DIY types can wade in and slather on some mineral-rich mud before floating in the high-salinity water, while beauty mavens can continue the experience at a spa at one of the numerous luxury hotels by the shore (we love the treatments at the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar ).

In addition to the healing properties of the mineral-filled mud and water, the oxygen-rich air and dry climate of this region are also believed to be beneficial for people with a variety of health conditions. Just keep in mind the heat can be unbearable during the summer.

Planning tip:  In the warmer months, consider an outdoor jaunt in nearby Wadi Mujib – the “Grand Canyon of Jordan” – with a hike in the shade of the gorge followed by a cool dip in the fresh water. You can also hike in the wadis (valleys) near South Ghor on the southern end of the Dead Sea with Al Numeira Environmental Association , then refuel at the organization’s cafe, which serves food and drinks made from locally sourced ingredients.

Best place for cultural icons

However long you're in Jordan, UNESCO-listed Petra is somewhere you shouldn't miss. The “Rose Red City,” so named for the pink stone and sand found here, is massive at 264 sq km (102 sq miles). You could easily spend hours, a full day or several days trekking the area and marveling at the handiwork and history of the ancient Nabatean culture.

Choose your own adventure depending on your interests, time and ability. If you’re short on time, take the road most traveled and hike through the Siq to reach the Treasury facade. (Yes, Jordan’s most famous site is the carved-stone setting you may have seen in the 1989 movie  Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade .)

If you’ve got a full day, map out your can’t-misses in advance. If you have multiple days set aside and want to go beyond the most common sites, book a guided tour that might include storytelling, hiking, Arabic coffee and meals.

Local tip:  Want to see Petra from another angle? Take a tip from Mohammed Ziad Abdullatif and hike to Petra (either from Little Petra or, if you’re up for a more challenging trek, via the multi-day Dana-to-Petra leg of the Jordan Trail) before exploring the ancient city. “The Petra Back Trail from Little Petra to Petra is my all-time favorite hike for its location, scenery, history and that first glimpse of the Monastery when it starts to appear,” Abdullatif says.

Two Bedouin men eat food on a brightly striped carpets in the desert of Jordan

8. Wadi Rum

Best place for stunning desert landscapes

No spaceship is required to visit the Mars-like landscapes of Wadi Rum ; modes of transport here instead range from foot and camel to 4WD and even hot-air balloon. Rugged mountains and graceful natural arches in a sea of rust-colored sand make this protected area one of the most photogenic and beautiful places in Jordan – and the world.

Many travelers come seeking a slower pace and silence, though Wadi Rum has become so popular that you may have to go farther afield, away from the main sites and camps, to find true desert tranquility. You can also spend a day with a Bedouin guide hiking, cooking and learning how to build a tent.

One of the best places in the world for rock climbing, Wadi Rum also attracts active and adventurous travelers. Book a guided climb and overnight camping with Bedouin Campsite and Tours  and learn from Bedouin people who’ve grown up scaling these sandstone giants.

Planning tip: The Red Sea resort city of Aqaba  is an hour’s drive away and the perfect place for an indulgent spa treatment and a luxury stay after working up a sweat in Wadi Rum.

The best travel agency in Jordan !

I like a lot of others was wary of going back to Jordan in the current political climate but no need to have any worries as Jordan is very safe and Jordanian people very welcoming . I was attracted to Jordan Select through previous Tripadvisor reports and was completely satisfied with the service and advice received which could not have been better . As I had been in Jordan last year I had a good idea of what I wanted to see and what visit I did not need to repeat i.e. Jerash , Wadi Rum and Acuba and I dealt with Ms. Elisa Papi in planning the itinary . Ms. Papi and I exchanged e mails almost on a daily basis for a month and she dealt with every query within hours and with great patience to ensure that at the end of the process we had a trip tailored exactly to what I wanted from this trip , Gadara , Pella , Salt , Dana , Petra and the Dead Sea area ..... her suggestions were spot on and we really had a fantastic experience in all locations but especially on the Dana to Feynan 16 Km. trek through Wadi Dana and in Petra where we had two full days on site and covered both the walk up to the Monastery and to the High Place of Sacrifice ( make sure to take the longer route back via Wadi Fasara ) . The most important person on any road trip is the driver as he can make a trip even more interesting or bore the life out of you and in Younes Roummana we got a gem as he went that extra mile to be available to show us the best views of Jordan be it a particular road side cafe or a diversion off the King's Highway and one two hour drive on a back road from Feynan to Petra through a deserted lunar like mountain landscape was particularly memorable .... Younes answered all our many questions about Jordanian culture and society and was an excellent safe driver who was always on time and always knew when to give us some time to ourselves yet was always there when needed . We could not have asked for a better driver and guide to Jordan and we will insist on Younes for our next trip to Jordan early next year . Our thanks to Jordan Select , to Elisa and Younes , for a wonderful tour of Jordan !

best tourism company in jordan

Jordanian friends referred us to Jordan Select and I'm only seeing the excellent TripAdvisor reviews now, but can confirm that they are very well deserved. Our trip was well structured and included all the major sites, a day trip to Jerusalem, plus some well-chosen detours based on our driver's observation of what we like (local culture, markets, nature). Wael, our driver, was exceptional - personable, fastidious, excellent driver and very responsive to our tourism needs and interests. We felt extremely safe and welcome wherever we were in Jordan. One caveat - those planning a Jerusalem tour from Jordan should request an advance briefing on the border crossing process; it's a bit scary when they take your passport and don't come back for a while, the crossing itself can take forever for no apparent reason, plus there's an exit fee which we didn't know about. Overall we loved our trip and would recommend Jordan Select without hesitation.

Excellent trip - more than I could have expected. Jordan Select took care of everything. The tour guide, Qais, was also excellent and helped our family (2 adults, 2 chidlren) to better understand the region, the history, and the life in Jordan. I highly recommend. We saw the Citadel, Wadi Rum, Petra, the Dead Sea and Aqaba. The only regret is that we did not book an extra day to cross over to Israel. A must do trip if in the Middle East.

Wonderful experience with Jordan Select Tours. Amira, our trip planner, was very professional, helpful, flexible and prompt. Esam, our driver, was very knowledgeable, punctual and had a great sense of humor as well. Would do it all again tomorrow. Very highly recommended. Hotels were great, food was wonderful, crowds minimal and weather perfect.

I had chosen Jordan Select Tours based on the Trip Advisor reviews. Our recent trip with them was fantastic from start to finish! MIss Sawsan was fast and efficient in the planning stages - and in accommodating some changes during the tour. Ibrahim Smadi our driver and main guide was the best. It felt like traveling with a friend! He anticipated what we would like and made suggestions for changes based on us that really enhanced the trip. Jordan itself must be mentioned too. This is a GREAT country with wonderful people and sights. For anyone who looks at traveling to that part of the world and hesitates - DON'T! Yes, there are issues with some neighboring countries, but Jordan is so impressive on so many levels. A bonus for current travelers: due to "unpleasantness" in the middle East tourism is down - bad for Jordan, but good for us tourists as a lot of the sites we had pretty much to ourselves. So go! Take advantage of decreased tourists, help out this marvelous country, and see amazing places! I will go back for sure. Wadi Rum (and my camel) are calling me….

best tourism company in jordan

We just returned today from a trip to Jordan which was arranged by Jordan Select Tours. Everything went very smoothly. They were quite amenable to changing the plan in any way we desired. Esam was our driver and he was excellent. I think everyone's primary concern right now is safety. Jordan is extremely safe and we never had any concerns for our safety. A side benefit to traveling now is that tourism is down 70 - 90%, so there are NO crowds anywhere. It is a fascinating country and Petra is MUCH more than you expect! My only suggestion for improvement is that I would talk to them about a different option for Wadi Rum and sleeping in a tent in the desert Bedouin camp. This was a mass production experience, with tents crammed into the Camp area, two feet apart, with no view & no ambiance. Perhaps there is an option to stay somewhere else and just take a day excursion into the area. In any event, I would highly recommend this Tour Group, and would not hesitate to book with them again!

Dead Sea Resort - Jordan

The Dead Sea, located in the Middle East between Jordan and Israel, is renowned for its unique properties and purported health benefits. While some of these benefits are anecdotal and not scientifically proven, there are several aspects of the Dead Sea that are believed to have potential health advantages:

  • Mineral-Rich Water: The Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, with a salinity level about 10 times higher than that of regular seawater. It’s also rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and bromide. These minerals are believed to have therapeutic effects on the skin and overall health.
  • Skin Conditions: Many people with skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne visit the Dead Sea region seeking relief. The minerals and unique composition of the Dead Sea water and mud are thought to have a soothing and healing effect on the skin. Some individuals experience temporary improvements in their skin conditions after spending time in the area.
  • Respiratory Health: The Dead Sea’s low elevation and high atmospheric pressure may have a positive effect on respiratory conditions like asthma. The clean air and low allergen levels in the region can be beneficial for those with respiratory issues.
  • Rheumatologic Conditions: Some people with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis believe that the buoyancy provided by the high salt concentration in the Dead Sea can alleviate joint pain and improve mobility. The minerals in the water may also have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Relaxation and Stress Reduction: The tranquil environment and the experience of floating effortlessly in the buoyant waters of the Dead Sea can promote relaxation and stress reduction, which can have indirect benefits on overall health and well-being.
  • Exfoliation and Detoxification: The Dead Sea mud is often used as a natural exfoliant and is believed to help remove dead skin cells, toxins, and impurities from the skin. This can lead to smoother, healthier-looking skin.

Eid al fitr boosts international, domestic tourism in jordan.

By Maria Weldali - Apr 14,2024 - Last updated at Apr 14,2024

best tourism company in jordan

Eid Al Fitr improves the inbound tours in various tourist and archaeological areas across the country, according to stakeholders (JT File photo)

AMMAN — Eid Al Fitr has significantly improved the inbound tours in various tourist and archaeological areas across the country, according to stakeholders.

Speaking with The Jordan Times on Wednesday, Mahmoud Waleed, a tourism operator and owner of a travel and tourism agency, said that “the majority of tourists went to Aqaba duringthis Eid … while much smaller numbers of visitors went to Petra and Wadi Rum”.

Furthermore, Waleed said that the four-day Eid period witnessed a sharp rise in staycation reservations. Noting that “Almost all stakeholders observed heightened activity, especially in the regions of Ajloun, Jerash and Irbid”.

He said that “traditionally, Eid public holidays are a very busy period, however, when compared with previous years, we can see that the demand was a bit higher this year”.

Deputy President of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) and Tourism and Economy Commissioner Hamzah Hajj-Hassan on Saturday said that some 110,000 tourists visited Aqaba during Eid Al Fitr holiday until Friday, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Hajj-Hassan said that some 95,000 of the total tourists entered the coastal city through Wadi Al Yutom and Wadi Araba crossings, and 15,000 visitors entered Aqaba through international land ports, seaports and the airport.

According to Salama Khattar, a representative of the Jordan Society of Tourism and Travel Agents, the “Urdun Jannah” programme, which encourages domestic tourism, has played a key role in stimulating inbound tourism during Eid.

He pointed out that the programme has helped bring a diverse range of hospitality experiences to people.

In this regard, Batoul Huthaifa, 24 years old, told The Jordan Times over the phone that “most of the families I know went on a trip or rented a villa near the Dead Sea or Jerash on Thursday or Friday…” adding that she went to Irbid with her family and the favourable weather was helpful.

Meanwhile, Osama Saif Eddin, an employee at a hotel in the Dead Sea, said that occupancy rates have risen by no less than 50 per cent, peaking on Friday and Thursday.

It was an excellent tour. Well guided. I felt well looked after. Taking a tour was a good idea given the way Jordanians drive. It was nice to be able to relax sitting on the bus. I liked how it allowed 2 days in Wadi Ramu and Petra although personally I would have loved to stay in Wadi Ramu for one or two more days.

Just Jordan - 6 Days

When I planned to book my trip to Jordan for 6 days, I have only one mission & that is to see Petra & no expectations with the tour guide until I arrived in the airport & met Mr. Mustafa Orabi. He is not only funny but he is an excellent tour guide. Not only his passion & love to his job but also he cared for my well being. He made sure that I enjoy my trip & spent the time as much as I want. Visiting Petra was definitely a dream come true. I can't take my eyes off as the place was really stunning. Wadi Rum is another. The desert gave me a peace (even just a day). The desert mountains & the panoramic views was so beautiful. And my desert guide, Saud, he is amazing & a good photographer! Thanks to him I have tons of gorgeous pictures that I'm on it! lol! Then there's the Dead Sea. Just float on the water & your worries are gone. Then visited the famous historical places like, Mt. Nebo, Citadel in Amman & the city of Jerash. No words can describe but an awe & loving it each minute I was in Jordan and a BIG THANKS to Mr. Orabi, he made me feel I am part of the Jordanian family. I am definitely gonna miss his hospitality.

‘We saw an immediate drop’: Jordan’s tourism industry is suffering amid the Israel-Hamas war

Jordan’s economy relies heavily on tourism but since Hamas’ attack on Israel in October and the ongoing war in Gaza, tourism in the country has slowed down. This is also the case in other countries in the region, including Israel itself, Lebanon and Egypt.

  • By Shirin Jaafari

A general view of the ancient city of Jerash, north of the capital Amman, Jordan, Dec. 6, 2023. Jerash is one of the most popular attractions in Jordan behind Petra. It is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside of Italy, and its history goes back more than 6,500 years.

The ancient Roman ruins of Jerash, on the outskirts of Amman, Jordan, represent one of the best-preserved Roman cities.

Here, gladiators once competed in chariot-racing contests as spectators watched from the stone seats.

Dhirar Atmeh grew up in the area.

“When I used to come, and you know, see people come in as tourists, I said ‘this is my thing. This is where I should go,’” he said.

ruins

Atmeh has been working as a tour guide in Jordan for the past two decades. He said that nothing brings him more joy than telling foreign visitors about the long history and the splendor of this site.

But these are tough times for Atmeh and the thousands of others who work in the tourism industry in Jordan and neighboring countries. The war in Gaza has brought his business to a near standstill, he said: “I lost 80% of my job. I mean 80% of my reservations were canceled.”

Tours from the US, Europe and Australia were canceled one after another. People stopped coming.

ruins

Atmeh has five kids and he said he’s struggling to provide for them. For him, what’s happening now brings back difficult memories of the early days of the pandemic, when he lost most of his assets.

“I had a car. I had to sell it. I had a house, I sold it. Many things … I had a piece of land also I sold. So, it wasn’t easy.”

Atmeh said that he’s worried about the weeks and months ahead, as there seems to be no end to the fighting.

Already, Jordan’s unemployment rate, as of last year, was about 23%, according to the World Bank.

man near ruins

If tourists don’t come back, he said, it’s not like he can just find another job.

Tours here are typically part of a package that includes Jordan, Israel and Egypt. Conflict in one of them means that people cancel their whole trip.

Ben Julius is the founder of Tourist Israel, one of the largest tour agencies in Israel.

“From the beginning of the war, we saw an immediate drop, close to zero, from what was expected to be one of the best and busiest periods ever.”

In Israel, flights have been canceled, tourist sites have been closed and hotels have been empty .

ruins

“It’s been very difficult for us. Around 70% of our team — we immediately had to send to furlough again. Many of them only came back into the tourism industry and back into the company in the last year because of the recovery from COVID.”

Julius operates tours in Egypt as well, and he said that they’ve had many cancellations there, too.

In Lebanon, the Christmas season is also shaping up to be a loss this year .

tourists in the ruins

Juliuis is seeing signs of improvement for next year. He said that people are booking their trips in advance.

“That’s giving us a little bit of hope going into next year.”

tourists

Meanwhile, back in Jordan, the minister of tourism, Makram Mustafa Queisi, predicts an even bigger drop in the number of tourists in the coming months if the war doesn’t stop.

“The problem is that people in the West and elsewhere, actually, when they look at the map, they don’t differentiate between Jordan and the neighboring countries. People don’t understand that we are not in a war zone.”

people at a stand

He said he wants to change that perception and help people understand that Jordan is a safe place to visit. When tourists don’t come, he said, that affects a wide swath of the economy.

“We talk about the bus drivers for example, we speak about restaurants, we speak about hotels, we speak about the tour operators, and the people who work with the tour operators.”

For tourism to survive, he said, this region needs stability and security.

man in office

“This aggression has to stop because at the end of the day there’s no winner.”

In the meantime, Jordan is using this unexpected break in tourism to renovate some of its historical sites.

Best price: pets best pet insurance, best for senior pets: figo pet insurance, best for customization: spot pet insurance.

Best for Preexisting Conditions: ASPCA Pet Insurance

Best for alternative therapy: healthy paws pet insurance, best for exotic pets: nationwide pet insurance, best for unlimited coverage: trupanion pet insurance.

If you're looking for pet insurance at a cheap rate, Pets Best Pet Insurance has some of the lowest prices in the industry. You can go to any licensed veterinarian. However, it should be noted that in Insider's staff experiences with Pets Best policies, the reimbursement rate is also applied to your deductible.

So if you had a $500 deductible with 90% reimbursement, a $500 claim would leave you with another $50 left on your deductible, with charges applied based on the 90% reimbursement rate. This is not unusual, but it should factor into your budget and policy choices.

Pets Best offers three types of plans: accident-only, accident and illness, and a wellness plan. With highly customizable options, you can further lower your rate. Plus, the insurer doesn't have an age gap on pet insurance.

Unfortunately, if you're looking for alternative treatments like herbal and holistic treatments, consider searching elsewhere.

  • Annual coverage options: $5,000, unlimited
  • Reimbursement options: 70%, 80%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $50, $100, $200, $250, $500, $1,000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $20; Cats - $12

Many pet insurance providers will only insure pets younger than 14. Insurers may put an age cap on eligibility because pets, like humans, tend to develop health conditions as they age. However, Figo Pet Insurance will insure your furry friend, regardless of age. Whatever plan you consider, understand pet insurance companies will not cover preexisting conditions . For dogs or cats with a history of allergies, cancer, diabetes, or other conditions, this would still leave pet parents on the hook for related bills if diagnosed before buying your plan.

Figo offers three plans: the Essential plan, the Preferred plan, and the Unlimited plan. This insurer provides ample coverage choices to customize your policy based on your pet's needs and your budget.

Unfortunately, Figo doesn't sell a basic, accident-only plan, which is generally cheaper than an accident-illness or wellness program. Additionally, while it reimburses you, you must pay your vet bills upfront. Many pet parents resolve this issue using services like CareCredit, which can be paid off after completing the claim. If you're interested in Figo, we recommend Costco members go through the retail giant's partnership with Figo as you get 15% off standard premiums.

  • Annual coverage options: $5,000, $10,000, unlimited
  • Reimbursement options: 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%
  • Deductible options: $100, $250, $500, $750
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $26; Cats - $14

With Spot Pet Insurance , you have nine annual coverage limits, three reimbursement, and five deductible options. This insurer offers an excellent range of policy coverages to mix and match as you choose. Of course, your monthly premiums will vary accordingly.

Spot pet insurance also offers an accident-only and accident-illness plan. The company as a wider range of pet coverage that many competitors lack, like prescription food and behavioral modification. Based on our research at the time of this guide, Spot doesn't sell wellness plans. However, you can add the gold and platinum preventative care plan to supplement your policy.

  • Annual coverage options: $2,500, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, unlimited
  • Deductible options: $100, $250, $500, $750, $1,000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $28; Cats - $14

Best for Bundling: Lemonade Pet Insurance

Lemonade Pet Insurance is a relatively new pet insurance company. Aside from pet insurance, it also offers home, car, and renters insurance (which received high marks for customer satisfaction). So you can bundle your pet insurance with other products for 10% additional savings.

If you're a tech-savvy shopper, you may appreciate Lemonade's highly-rated mobile app and user-friendly digital platform. You could purchase a policy, manage your claims, and access your insurance ID at the touch of your fingertip. Unfortunately, Lemonade is not available in all states yet. So be sure to check and see if Lemonade is available to you. But with up to $100,000 in annual coverage, Lemonade covers most significant health events for pets.

  • Annual coverage options: $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, $100,000
  • Deductible options: $100, $250, $500
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $28; Cats- $14

Unfortunately, all pet insurance providers exclude preexisting conditions from coverage. This is because pet insurance companies have to mediate risk to keep premiums low for everyone. However, several companies will cover preexisting conditions if your pet has been symptom- and treatment-free for some time. ASPCA Pet Insurance is one of those providers.

ASPCA pet insurance will cover curable preexisting conditions if your cat, dog, and even horses if your pet has been symptom-free for over 180 days (excluding ligament and knee conditions).

With ASPCA pet insurance, you choose an accident-only, accident and illness, and preventative care plan. ASPCA pet insurance's comprehensive programs cover alternative therapies, behavioral issues, and congenital and hereditary conditions. The provider even covers pet microchipping. When going through the quoting process online, we were told we must speak to a live representative to obtain a quote for unlimited annual coverage.

  • Annual coverage options: $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $33; Cats - $17

Only a few providers offer alternative medicine if you prefer to take the holistic and herbal route when seeking treatment for your pet. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance offers a comprehensive list of non-invasive forms of therapy, including acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physical therapy, laser therapy, and massage care, as long as a licensed veterinarian provides the treatment.

The trade-off, however, is Healthy Paws won't cover preventative and wellness care. Its site specifies Healthy Paws believes wellness costs can be planned for. For example, you expect to do a yearly exam and get updated vaccines, and even if you save a little bit each month, you can plan accordingly. However, accidents and severe chronic illnesses are difficult to plan for, and costs are frequently unreasonable. So Healthy Paws focuses on the most significant area of need it sees.

  • Annual coverage options: Unlimited
  • Reimbursement options: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $50, $100, $250, $500, $750, $1,000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $37; Cats - $18

Finding cheap pet insurance may be challenging if you have an exotic pet like a bird, rabbit, or reptile. Nationwide Pet Insurance is currently the only pet insurance company to offer wide-reaching coverage for many exotic pets. Other companies offer "discount plans," much like human prescription discount plans. However, you'd have to work with specific vets, and coverage would be specific to the treatment provided.

Nationwide pet insurance offers three pet insurance plans:

  • Major Medical (accident and illness plan)
  • Whole Pet (more comprehensive accident and illness plan)
  • A wellness plan

Nationwide offers various conditions in its plans. However, the coverage is set. Nationwide's sample accident and illness policy broke down many potential diagnoses with primary and secondary diagnoses allowances. Ultimately, each buyer will receive a policy breakdown. However, Nationwide is a more expensive pet insurance provider with limited flexibility.

  • Annual coverage options: Per condition
  • Reimbursement options: 50%, 70%, 90%
  • Deductible options: $250
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $35; Cats - $14

Trupanion Pet Insurance is one of the pricier insurers on this list. Also, it offers a limited selection of policy options. However, if you're looking for a plan with unlimited coverage, Trupanion may be your winner. Unfortunately, we've all heard of the unexpected accident or illness in an otherwise healthy pet calling for emergency care.

Some emergency surgeries can easily surpass $20,000, and you might be on the hook for follow-up care, rehab, and even further surgeries. These are the times when unlimited care could be the saving grace to save your furry friend.

Trupanion offers deductibles ranging from $0 to $1,000. What's unique about this insurer is you'll only have to pay the deductible once per condition. For example, say your pet develops an illness requiring ongoing treatment. While most insurers will need you to pay a deductible yearly, you'll only have to pay your deductible once when the condition appears, potentially saving you money. This is handy for chronic conditions like allergies, diabetes, and cancer.

  • Reimbursement options: 90%
  • Deductible options: $0 to $1000
  • Average monthly cost: Dogs - $50; Cats - $22

We review a company based on several benchmarks and compare it against the industry standard.

  • Affordability: We consider an insurer cheap if it meets or is below the industry average premiums. We also compare the prices against its competitors.
  • Policy customization: We look at the breadth of an insurer's policy options. Policy options include the number of annual coverages, deductibles, and reimbursement options. The price is not the only determining factor if you compare a $50 for unlimited coverage with 80% reimbursement with a $10 policy with a $5,000 annual cap.
  • Waiting period: A waiting period is the time between purchasing a policy and when coverage kicks in. The average waiting period for accident coverage is three days, and fourteen days for illness coverage. However, waiting periods for genetic conditions and serious illnesses could last a year.
  • Types of policies available: The best pet insurance companies typically offer three types of plans: accident-only, accident-illness, and wellness plans. We look through an insurer's website to determine if it sells some variation of those three plans.
  • Exclusions: Pets come in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, insurance companies will exclude some pets from coverage, like older pets or even those with curable preexisting conditions.
  • Company offerings: We look at the extensiveness of a company's policies. Some insurers offer coverage for microchipping, alternative medicine, and other unique conditions.

We go into further detail in our insurance rating methodology .

Which dog breed qualifies for the cheapest pet insurance?

Small, spayed, female mixed-breed dogs are the cheapest to insure, according to North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA).

How much is a reasonable deductible for pet insurance?

Consider your needs before choosing a deductible. Choosing a high deductible may lower your monthly premiums. However, to start your coverage as soon as possible, consider choosing a low deductible, like $100 to $500.

When should you use pet insurance?

You'll decide what coverage you're willing to pay for upfront. However, whenever you have a qualifying claim, you should file a claim with your pet insurance provider. Insurance providers may have a time limit on claims, and you have to fulfill your annual deductible before full coverage will kick in.

What is the cheapest pet insurance?

Pets Best pet insurance costs an average of $20 for dogs and $12 for cats, the lowest prices among its competitors. Prices will vary based on your pet's age and breed.
