About Surah Al-Asr:

Surah Al-Asr (Arabic text: العصر) is the 103rd chapter of the Qur’an. The surah titled in English means “The Declining Day” and it consists of 3 verses. ..

Background Surah Information Surah Al-Asr is considered a Meccan surah which takes from the first word of the Surah. It translates to mean the declining day referring to late afternoon.

Sayyidna Ubaidullah Ibn Hisn (رض) reports that whenever two Companions of the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) met, they would not part company until one of them had recited Surah Al-Asr in its entirety to the other [Transmitted by At-Tabarni]

This message of this Surah is a reminder that all human beings are in perpetual loss, except those who have strong imaan (faith). It also touches on the importance of being righteous, going towards the truth, and practicing and encouraging Sabr (patience) among the ummah. It is said that although Surah Asr is one of the shortest Surahs of the Qur’an with 3 verses, it contains the core message of the Qur’an.

What is Asr?

• Through prayer, you can form a divine spiritual link with Allah, purify your sins, encourage self-reflection, grow spiritually, and make yourself worthy of Allah’s forgiveness.

When do I pray Asr?

• Although missing these prayers should be avoided at all costs, if you forget or sleep through Asr, you’re permitted to make it up as soon as you remember to do it. [3] X Research source

• If you’re physically disabled, keep in mind that each rakat is generally requires movement that includes kneeling, prostrating, and standing back up. If you can’t perform these actions, sitting or lying down to pray is permitted. [5] X Research source

The Asr prayer is the afternoon prayer recited by Muslims. To perform Asr, make ablution, face the Qiblah, and recite Surah Al-Fatihah. Then bow, prostrate twice, and conclude while sitting if possible. Asr has four rakat fardh or obligatory units, making it longer than other daily prayers besides Maghrib. Focus the mind and heart during Asr by pondering the meaning of recitations and Allah’s greatness.

How many rakats are in Asr?

• “I intend to pray 4 rakat for Asr today.”

• “Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabarakasmuka, wa ta’ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk”
• Meaning: “Glorious You are O Allah, and with Your praise, and blessed is Your Name, and exalted is Your majesty, and none has the right to be worshipped but You.”

• “Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem Alhamdu lillaahi Rabbil ‘aalameen Ar-Rahmaanir-Raheem Maaliki Yawmid-Deen Iyyaaka na’budu wa lyyaaka nasta’een Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqeem Siraatal-lazeena an’amta ‘alaihim ghayril-maghdoobi ‘alaihim wa lad-daaalleen”
• Meaning: “With the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Very-Merciful. Praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, the All-Merciful, the Very Merciful. the Master of the Day of Requital. You alone do we worship, and from You alone do we seek help. Take us on the straight path, the path of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not of those who have incurred Your wrath, nor of those who have gone astray.”

Objectives: 

·To understand the meaning of Surah Al-Asr , one of the greatest surahs of the Quran.

Arabic terms:

· Hadith -  (plural – ahadith ) is a piece of information or a story.  In Islam it is a narrative record of the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad and his companions.

· Sahabah - the plural form of “Sahabi,” which translates to Companions.   A sahabi, as the word is commonly used today, is someone who saw Prophet Muhammad, believed in him and died as a Muslim.

· Sabr - patience and it comes from a root word meaning to stop, detain,  or refrain.

· Sunnah - The word Sunnah has several meanings depending on the area of study however the meaning is generally accepted to be, whatever was reported that the Prophet said, did, or approved.

· Haqq - truth.  Al-Haqq (The Truth) is one of the names of Allah.

Introduction

“By Al-’Asr (the time).  Verily, man is [deep] in loss, except for those who believe and do good deeds, urge one another to the truth and urge one another to patience.” (Quran 103)

This surah opens with admonition to humankind.  Allah takes an oath by “time” and declares that humankind is in a state of loss.  Every single human being, man or woman, is in a state of loss except those who strive and do four things; believe, do righteous deeds, and recommend one another to truth, and to sabr .

The meaning of Asr

The simple translation for the word asr would be time.  However asr has a much deeper meaning than another Arabic word meaning time, dahr .  Dahr means time with no limits placed upon it, asr on the other hand means time that is limited; time that will come to an end.  At a linguistic level one of the meanings of asr is something that is pressed or squeezed.  Allah is swearing an oath by time, a time that is limited, a time that will end and a time that must be squeezed or pressed so that we, humankind, get as much from our limited time as possible. 

Allah is also asking us to reflect on the passage of time.  Another meaning that is given to the word asr is the declining day, the time of the Asr prayer, when the day is winding down coming to an end.  Allah is telling us that our time is short and limited and if we do not make the most of it we are surely the losers, verily, Allah says, we are in loss.

The meaning of loss

The Arabic word for loss is khusr and it is the opposite of profit thus also carrying the meaning of bankruptcy.  In this context it could mean that humankind will lose their main capital for the Hereafter if instead of using this life to gain by faith and deeds they bargain it away with disbelief and sin.

We are in danger of losing something very special, and that is a blissful life in the Hereafter.  However before that great loss we will lose our closeness to Allah and thus our peace and tranquility in this life.  A loss of contentment can sometimes lead humankind to act treacherously, and to run headlong into trouble and strife.  But Allah is constantly warning us and here He is once more saying, wait, think and save yourself.  Save yourself by aiming to have four character traits:

1.To believe.  The first step of salvation is through upholding the correct belief and adhering to it with conviction and certainty.

2.To do righteous deeds.  The way in which we gain this certainty is by doing the actions that are pleasing to Allah; we demonstrate our belief through our actions or righteous deeds. Our deeds must be performed in accordance to what is in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah. They should not be according to our whims and desires.  The true sign of success is to obey Allah’s commandments and to resist the desire to sin.

3.To encourage, recommend or connect to truth.  In Arabic haqq .   Allah is telling us to remind each other and encourage each other to be faithful to the truth, and to let it stand out clearly by striving for justice.

4.To recommend one another to sabr is the fourth trait and establishing a commitment to haqq would not be possible without sabr .  Being steadfast in following the commandments of Allah requires patience, staying away from sins requires patience, and not despairing in times of calamities requires patience.  Ibnul Qayyim [2]  explained that having sabr meant having the ability to stop ourselves from despairing, to refrain from complaining, and to control ourselves in times of sadness and worry. 

This surah advises those who believe to act collectively to strengthen their position in the Hereafter.  It implies asking and inviting people to do righteous deeds and stopping them from falling into sin and disbelief. 

The revelation of this surah occurred during difficult times.  The early Muslims had to contend with the oppression and surah Al-Asr gave them strength and confidence in the face of their trials and tribulations.  It is perhaps for this reason that it was very dear to the sahabah and still is to those who try to lead righteous lives.  Nowadays when a person finds himself in loss, his position can be turned around by following the succinct advice Allah gave to us in surah Al-Asr.

I'd be reeeeeeeal careful going with that group. When I went with them about 3 years ago to Iran, there was no screening process for who was involved. The guys were trying to have mutah where ever they went and flirting with girls everywhere. They couldn't control themselves in public and made us a laughing stock...the girls in our group weren't much better. Everyone's manners were horrible and the management didn't care...it felt like they just had a job to do. Most of the people going were there simply because they wanted a vacation, not because they wanted to improve themselves. There were a lot of other problems too, but this is as far as I want to go without making it too personal.

I'm not sure what it was like last year as I haven't gone with them. Don't say I didn't warn you though. When I went, Iran and visiting Imam Ali ar-Rida was great, but the al-Asr group was bad.

I went this pass summer, It was not like the brother described it, the supervisors were very precautious and took full alert, it was strict...I liked it.

If you stick with the rihgt people you should nothave a problem... I can say ppl were looking for every opportunity to 'mingle' but keep away and u'll be fine...

The classes were great they had a mowlana from the Us- he had been studying in qum ofr years now, he was a great influence on many....

If i were you i would rethink what was stated earlier... I think they have changed.

Mowlana Sabzwary is a dedicated man, and i would never see him allow for such haram behavior.

You have to remember the people you are going with were INVITED by Imam Ali Al Redha and his sister, that means there is a reason for them being with you.

If you want more details let me know, i have even considered going again.

I went last yr.....it was fun....and the Syed was brill....my Allah reward him for his hard work.....he put so much effort into it and stressed out loads....

yeah ok there were a few problems and hardships, but a ziyarat is never meant to b easy.....

If there was all this flirting etc in the past they must of dealt with it strictly before cuz this year i didnt c ne of tht....

Syed Aatif u hav 2 remember the ppl u went with were youth, teenagers of course there not gona bhave like adults....its designed for the youth of today...and the youth bought up in the western world will act differently and in most cases be more immature than the youth in iran....

Everyone has their own opnions i guess...but for me its an experience tht i will never forget...one of the amazing things is tht u meet a group of strangers, u live with them for a month and u leave the best of friends...

I had my experiences and you had yours. As the brother was asking for opinions I am giving mine just as you are entitled to yours. If your memories of the group were happy, I'm glad for you. As I mentioned, my experience is from 3 years ago and I don't know what they are like now...this doesn't change the fact that I have had my experience with the group already so I have no reason to "rethink" my experience. There was no discipline on the trip I went on and what I explained happened, end of story.

As for being invited by Imam, that is all well and good, but one who is invited should show good manners to the Imam if he or she is going to visit him. If so and so, for example, throws a heavy book at a fellow traveler hitting them full in the face or stealing someone else's money, we can not excuse that behavior. Nor can we allow for flashing underwear at fellow Muslims or filthy language. One brother never showered and offended everyone with his smell...he refused to wash. One of the organizers informed the travelers his back was hurthing and he needed a mutah as he hadn't had sex in 9 days. These things all happened in plain sight in front of us. You don't have to even be Muslim to understand this is disgusting, let alone not befitting a follower of Ahlul-Bayt. Considering these people were all invited by the Imam to visit him, the behavior of those who acted in this way was all the more odious.

I have no further comment on this issue other than best of luck to all who hope to find a quality caravan for visiting the holy places.

I dont think Brother that it should be discussed in the manner you have said. Thqt is not appropriate.

Highlighting induvidual cases, where no one is here to give the "other side" of the argument is not right, if you are aware when you make an accusation or reveal an experience you had which was unfortunate that no one is around to provide their point of view, then you shouldn't mention it at all.

Our Imam(AS)'s have always told us that when we speak of others, we should only speak of their good actions, especially if they are muslims and even more so if they are Shia-e-Ali(AS).

This is not a Personal messaging service, there are over 5000 members on this board, if you dont "broadcast" these accusations in public and at places where there are many people in person, then you shouldn't do that here either.

Please be more careful when you talk about "others" next time. Although I am sure you conducted yourself in a good manner while on a ziarat, I am sure if someone started broadcasting their "experiences" of you in the same manner that you did you wouldn't like it.

Please be more careful next time brother, you are dealing with an organisation that has been running for over 10 years, run by a very knowledgeable student of Imam Khomeini (Sayyid Sabzawary), who studied under him in Najaf and in Qom for many many years, and whom has devoted his entire life to bringing Shia Islam to the youth of the world.

Please in future do not highlight induvidual cases and then attribute it to the organisation.

You get bad experiences everywhere, whether it be the Masom Masjid of Chicago or an Islamic College in London, that does not allow one to start tainting organisations.

ALL sorts of people are Invited by the Imam(AS) and we are not the ones to start labelling or categorizing them. Hazrat Isa(AS) once said: "I did not come to this earth for the believers, but I came for the sinners in order to bring them to the right path" (some along those lines).

I hope you understand brother, and take my post in the good faith that was intended. :)

Since for some reason Syed Sabzawary's name keeps coming up, let me say plainly that I'm not speaking about him. I find it rude on the part of those people who are even bringing his name up when there are a number of people working with this organization, not the said Alim alone. Nor do I see the reason of bringing up two other organizations that have nothing to do with this thread. What do you intend to achieve by doing so? As for not "broadcasting" these issues in public, I don't know what leads anyone to think that I wouldn't say the same in public if I was asked. I have been asked about the group before and I don't mind explaining my experience, as long as names are not mentioned of course. It is wrong to even bring the alim's name up when we are talking about my personal experiences. I am sure that those who are doing so have good intentions, but in mentioning the alim's name, they are calling more attention to him than is necessary. I have tried to keep this from being personal, but you are making it personal by bringing people and organizations who have nothing to do with this into the mix. And what does the said alim's studying under Ayatollah Khomeini (ra) have to do with this conversation?

Some here have said that I'm highlighting personal cases. Very well, where have I accused anyone by name? I can see this is going to turn into a fight, and I really don't think there is any reason for that, especially when tonight could possibly be the night of Qadr. I am speaking about a lack of discipline and adab I saw on this trip, not just once, but numerous times. This thread was not opened just to hear positive things about the trip but to ask us our opinions. If I simply said it is a lousy caravan, you would all jump on me for that, I'm sure. It is better to give proof than to make accusations without any basis. And as I saw what I did with my 2 eyes on my trip three years ago, I have no problem warning a fellow Muslim they should be careful about joining the said group.

As for he who quoted Hadrat Isa (as) perhaps you have also heard of the hadith of Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (as) and those who go on hajj. Very many go for hajj but few people really realize what it means...the same could be said for ziyarat. I'm a bit amused that so much respect is being given to people who have engaged in the said behavior simply because they are Muslim. While it is true we should speak well of others (qur'an: Qooloo lilnassi husnan) we do not respect or make excuses for persistent bad behavior, as there is a difference between making a mistake and persisting in doing wrong. The Quran does not divide itself into those who are simply Muslim by name and those who aren't. It divides humanity into those who worship and submit themselves to Him and those who don't.

Ok, I'm done with this thread...no time for this, especially as the end of Ramadan is swiftly approaching. If you have something to say to me, PM me. I'm not adding to this thread as I can see it getting locked. And I want nothing to do with that.

I went with al asr a few years back also. I thought it was a great experience going for ziarat with a group rather than with just the family as you get to meet brothers your age dealing with the same kind of problems you face etc. As for mawlana sabzwari..May Allah reward him for what hes doing. Some people may say things against him but at the end of the day you have to give the guy credit as he is taking a huge responsibility of getting everyones ziarat done. To me he was extremely helpful and fortunately I did not have the same type of people in my group as brother syed atif did :squeez: that underwear story sounded quite harsh.....but one thing i was accused of perving by this one lady because i went for a swim and did not know it was the womens turn to use the pool ( I WAS SLEEPING THE WHOLE DAY) .....anyways wont go into detail but i was chased by an iranian woman with a moustache carrying a broom...gimme a break i was little....i tell you though...those khoja women in the group :angry: :angry: :squeez: :squeez:

i went to iran with al-asr in 1998 and it was fantastic (in hindsight, i hated it at the time!)

i'm really glad i went but i used to be an irritable cow there cos i never slept enough, but that might be due to staying up every night playing blackjack....

i would recommend it :D

I was unable to view the posts to my question on Al-Asr for a day and I've come up with many different opinions from you guyz.

Alhumdulilah and Mashallah to those who have shared their humble opinions with us......

The reason why I choice this topic was because I believe when I went in 1998 and then once again in 2000, the entire trip changed the way I think, the way I am as a complete individual.

I'm not here to DIS any part or to even promote Al-Asr, I'm strictly here regarding how it changed a Waste of Humanity into someone who has come onto the Path of the Seeker of Knowledge.....

I respect and take the words of all you brothers and sisters with gratitude whether the experiences for you was Good, Brilliant, totally rubblish etc etc.

Before going on to te 1998 Trip I used to think Imam Khomeini was one of our IMAMS LOL I was that confused.

Al-Asr isnt about ONLY about doing Ziyarat and meeting new people on the trip in fact that may only be a fraction of what Al-Asr is actually about.

It gave me a total reality check of who I was and what my purpose was as not only a Human Being but also a Shia. I am not going to name any individuals or the Trip's organisers but I believe what I experienced in 1998 and 2000 together I would never use the word BAD or disregard a Caravan, Who are we to Judge the Intentions of the Organisers, individuals??

I believe I know exactly who the latter groups have experienced their times in Iran with Al-Asr. Again im not here to Judge who was right or who was wrong...

Who am I?? Nothing but a SinFulSoul....Who is trying to make the right decisions in life through what I gained and experienced with Al-Asr.

And Yes! it makes you meet people that you later find out it was meant to be, im talking specifically about FRIENDS, Brothers. Again I wont mention any names but the GUY, Brother, My Moula, who I met during my Trips was part of changing my entire Taqdeer my Life Map.....

I will not go further because its difficult to explain when your touched deeply by the Bounties of God (Swt) and it is sad to see that people who have gone on this trip have only the negative side to it..... Isnt that somethingto ponder on??

Wasnt that meant to be a test to see what was taken back from the Trip no matter how good or how bad the experience was?? Maybe the trip was a test just to see how you portray some Caravan??

I went al asr last year and the year before! Dammit if id gone this yr it wud have been a hatrick!! BUT IM GOING AGAIN THIS YRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

I LOVE AL ASR! It was the best time of my life ever, and i felt like id rediscovered islam again, it was just the best!!!! Visiting the eighth imam was incredible ill never ever forget that.

And besides me and my cuzin made fun of the flirters...man the things we did put them to shame!

it was the best!! i laughed for possibly the entire month! it rocked!!!Al asr is the best!!

Insha Allah everyone is in the best of health, mind and ever-increasing Imaan.

Alhamdolillah I had the blessing to go on the al-Asr trip this year. For me, I was well pleased with the trip and I think our group this year was pretty well behaved, Alhamdolillah. Of course there was some confusions here and there and whatnot (which is expected from every situation consisting of such a large group of people, especially coming from different walks of life and raised in different manners). The problem is that each year there are different people on the trip which makes each year a somewhat different experience. In no way whatsoever can the management or the organition as a whole be blamed. There are set rules which are enforced.

I cannot see how boys and girls met up. This year, especially with the girls, they were always sectioned off into groups of about 7 or so and chaperoned . And, being that I'm used to having to be observative of younger ones and that I was awake usually all night I never "caught" anyone or anything, not to say that I can see everything that's going on or whatever. Of course you will have people who have different levels of Islamic Akhlaq and different levels of practicing hijaab so perhaps everyone doesn't act exactly accordingly but you have to think that maybe this trip will, Insha Allah have an impact on them and they change for the better, for life. I know of girls who weren't even Muhajibah when they went, but when they came back they were.

It is painful for the eyes to see certain behaviors, and I'm not in any way trying to make excuses for any wrong behavior or trying to deny that they did happen what I am saying though is that it depends on how we choose to look at things, and we have to have patience and pray for people to be guided Insha Allah. Like someone said earlier, Imam Ridha (as) invited them to come and he knows what they are. We don't know the reason behind it and if they will sooner or later be guided and strengthed through this very trip.

What is also good about this trip is the Alims and the classes that we received. Once again, everyone is not going to take it all in the same way. It depends on what our intentions are. The trip as a whole was a learning experience in not just learning some lessons of Islam, but also in the learning the lessons of reality, of learning about ourselves. I neve realised until I went to Iran, with this trip, how spoiled and materialistic us people in the West are, no matter how simplistic we may think that our lives are.. they cannot in any way compare with the orphans of the shaheed who live in rooms with nothing but about 6-7 bunk beds and are grateful.

Listening to those stories and about these peoples lives brings shame to you. At the same time you are overwhelmed with all the Noor that you feel. All of the less prefered things from the trip are made up doubly by the feeling that you have in your heart when you are at the haram of Imam Ridha (as) and the Haram of Hadhrat Fatimah Masoomah (sa), at Masjide Jamkaran.. it completely wipes away any misfortunes that may have fallen upon you no matter how large or small and it changes your life... forever.

So, yes issues may arise but that's all part of the test of the Ziyarah. Overall, I would love to go again and I would encourage people to go. May Allah (swt) grant us patience and strength and guide us to the True Path. May He (swt) immensely reward the devoted and sincere management of the al-Asr group. And, may He (swt) grant us all the oppurtunity to visit the Holy one buried in Tus, Imam Ridha (as) and his beloved sister (as) and gain as good, if not better, of an experience as I had. Ameen.

Biden says US helped Israel down nearly all Iran attacks

President Joe Biden said US forces helped Israel shoot down nearly all the drones and missiles fired by Iran Saturday, but appeared to guide the key US ally away from retaliating against Tehran by saying Israel had now shown its strength.

Biden added that he was convening fellow G7 leaders on Sunday to coordinate a diplomatic response against Tehran, in another sign that he is trying to avoid any further military escalation that could ignite a wider Middle East conflict.

The US president said he had called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reaffirm Washington's "ironclad" support for Israel, after recent tense relations over Israel's war in Gaza.

"I told him that Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks -- sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel," he said.

He said he had ordered US military aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the Middle East in recent days, as the likely threat following a presumed Israeli strike on Iranians in Damascus became clear.

"Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our servicemembers, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles," Biden said.

Biden said he would on Sunday "convene my fellow G7 leaders to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran's brazen attack."

His comments hinted at the US balancing act between supporting its ally and wanting to deescalate tensions, amid fears of Washington being dragged into another Middle East war.

Those fears have mounted ever since a presumed Israeli strike on April 1 leveled an Iranian diplomatic building in Damascus, killing seven members of the elite Revolutionary Guards including two generals.

After launching the drone strikes, Tehran warned the United States Sunday to "stay away" from its conflict with Israel.

But US media reported that Biden was looking to de-escalate.

News outlet Axios said Biden had told Netanyahu that he would oppose an Israeli counterattack against Iran and that he should "take the win." NBC said he had privately expressed concerns to others that Netanyahu was trying to drag the United States more deeply into a broader conflict.

Earlier Saturday, Biden had cut short a weekend trip to the Delaware coast and flew back to Washington for an emergency meeting at the White House with his top national security officials.

He posted a picture of the meeting in the wood-paneled White House Situation Room with officials including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and CIA Director Bill Burns.

Biden's handling of the Middle East conflict will also be under scrutiny in a US presidential election year.

Former US president Donald Trump, Biden's rival in November's election, said the Democratic incumbent was showing "weakness."

"God bless the people of Israel. They are under attack right now. That's because we show great weakness," Republican Trump said at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Tensions had ratcheted up earlier in the day when Iran's Revolutionary Guards seized a container ship near the Strait of Hormuz that was "related to the Zionist regime," the term it uses for Israel, state media reported.

The White House condemned the seizure of the British-owned vessel as an "act of piracy."

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Gulf with the Indian Ocean and, according to the US Energy Information Administration, more than a fifth of global oil consumption passes through it each year.

Roll Tide: Alabama books first March Madness trip to Final Four with defeat of Clemson

LOS ANGELES — The Tide are rolling to Arizona.

Alabama is headed to the Final Four for the first time in school history after defeating Clemson 89-82 in West Region championship game to book a trip to State Farm Stadium next weekend.

It was a slow start for the Crimson Tide against Clemson, starting the contest 1-for-13 from 3-point land while it fell by as much as 13 points. But the nation's top scoring offense eventually woke up. It went on a hot 20-2 run toward the end of the first half to take the lead, and the offense continued its rhythm into the second half. Clemson would quickly take the lead out of halftime, but the 3-pointers were going in for Alabama and each clutch shot held the Tigers at bay.

"Good kids. The chemistry came together," Alabama coach Nate Oats said about his team that had three new assistant coaches and nine new players. "We fought some adversity. Next has been our word for the tournament. We just kept saying 'next play, next play.' We had some adversity here. We got down early and guys just hung in and stuck with the plan."

Mark Sears made seven of the team's 16 3-pointers for the game and led all scorers with 23 points. Jarin Stevenson added five makes from beyond the arc as part of a career-high 19 points. Nick Pringle contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Crimson Tide.

Saturday was only the second Elite Eight appearance for Alabama, with the last trip in 2004. This tournament, Alabama put up triple-digits in its opening round win over No. 13 seed Charleston, won a scrappy game over No. 12 seed Grand Canyon in the second round and had a clutch performance from Grant Nelson in the Sweet 16 to stun No. 1 seed North Carolina and be the first team to knockout a top seed this tournament.

The trip to the Final Four also marks an incredible turnaround for Oats. Last season, Alabama was the No. 1 overall seed last season and was eliminated in the Sweet 16 by eventual runner-up San Diego State. In the offseason, the Crimson Tide lost Brandon Miller and Noah Clownley to the NBA draft and has several departures. Alabama returned only three players that made significant contributions last season, but Oats brought in transfers and freshmen that were key in this season's Final Four run aligning with the returning players.

Now, Oats has eight tournament wins since his arrival at Alabama in 2019, a significant achievement considering it only had seven tournament wins in 26 seasons before Oats.

Prior to Saturday, Oats said he wanted to make the basketball program a championship-caliber team similar to the school's football team , and an Elite Eight win would be "the biggest win in the history of Alabama basketball."

Now he and his team have a chance to make even more history in the Final Four.

Before Silicon Valley trip, Murphy touts NJ's AI sector at Princeton summit

Gov. Phil Murphy will head to Silicon Valley and Hollywood in California this weekend in a bid to pitch New Jersey’s film and high tech sectors — especially artificial intelligence — to businesses out west. 

On Thursday, Murphy addressed an artificial intelligence summit hosted at Princeton University — a sector he’s referred to as a “moonshot” industry in the Garden State.

“We’re coming together to think ahead about one of the most positive and promising and potentially disruptive developments in human history,” the governor said Thursday afternoon. 

New Jersey, Murphy continued during his keynote address, is “perfectly positioned to lead the way in harnessing generative AI to address some of our world’s greatest challenges.” 

Murphy’s economic mission will run April 14 to 17, according to business magazine ROI-NJ . It will feature the first lady, Tammy Murphy, as well as Tim Sullivan, head of the state Economic Development Authority, and Wesley Matthews, head of Choose NJ, a nonprofit started by former Gov. Chris Christie to pay for the governor’s economic missions . 

Choose NJ spokesperson Ingrid Austin said the trip will take Murphy and his entourage through Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay area and Hollywood in Los Angeles, and that the nonprofit will pay for this trip.

“While industries like filmmaking and technology have long found a home on the West Coast, the truth is today, there is a whole new world of opportunity opening up right here in the Garden State,” Murphy, a Democrat, said last month in Atlantic City . 

What is AI? What's it used for?

AI, and more specifically generative AI, is a technology that processes data from the internet like a human brain to create content — text, pictures, video, music — based on users' instructions. 

Its emergence has meant that suddenly people who weren't computer scientists and didn't know how to write code could get their computer to perform tasks in seconds that would have take them minutes, hours or days to do in the past: respond to emails, write marketing brochures, design a magazine cover.

Technological applications in AI could range from fusion control to the power grid, chip design, home assistants and surgery, said Mengdi Wang, an associate professor at Princeton University’s Center for Statistics and Machine Learning.

Generative AI could be used for more mundane tasks that could otherwise take hours or days, and data searching becomes easier. 

At the forefront was OpenAi , a company based in San Francisco that was founded in 2015 to create a generative AI platform available to the public.

Its financial backers have included Elon Musk, Amazon and Microsoft. And it has rolled out ChatGPT, which generates text, and DALL-E , which generates digital images, with new versions providing increasingly human-like responses.

A recent report by the Pew Research Center found that 23% of American adults have used AI chatbot ChatGPT, up from 18% last July. 

“It’s like a Wild West,” said Aaron Price, chief executive officer of Tech United, a trade group for New Jersey’s high-tech industry. “Parts of the technology are very mature, parts of the technology are immature.” 

Comes with major downsides, needs 'guardrails'

The technology comes with massive downsides.

The federal Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency warned that ahead of the 2024 elections , generative AI could be used by foreign adversaries, cybercriminals and any member of the public to depict political figures in compromising positions or saying controversial statements that they didn’t actually make. 

USA TODAY reported on the prevalence of AI-generated nude images of famous and non-famous people alike. Graphic images generated of Taylor Swift were one glaring example. ChatGPT meanwhile has been used to generate academic essays by students, essentially cheating. 

“It needs some guardrails,” Teik Lim, president of the Newark-based New Jersey Institute of Technology, said in an interview last month.

AI-generated content could, for example, be required to display a prominent disclaimer that it is AI-generated, Lim said.

Kristin Dana, a computer engineering professor at Rutgers University, said that in some cases, AI might have trouble with such basic tasks as discerning between a school bus and an ostrich, given the right conditions. 

“Deep learning can fail in surprising ways,” she said at the Princeton summit, in reference to the process by which AI teaches something to a computer. 

What's NJ doing with AI?

In December, Murphy and Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said they would establish an AI hub at the Ivy League school. It would, under the plans, bring jobs and economic development while pushing forward the state’s AI industry.

New Jersey has an artificial intelligence task force , which is responsible for analyzing the potential social impacts and risks that come with artificial intelligence. The task force is also responsible for educating the state’s workforce and offering recommendations to authorities.

Fairleigh Dickinson University's Madison campus is sponsoring a contest for middle school and high school students worldwide to create content using ChatGPT , the free AI system.
