Where is Grindelwald-First?

Grindelwald First Location

Located at 2167 meters (7109 feet) above sea level, Grindelwald-First is located directly above the village of Grindelwald which is located 92 km (57 miles) from Zurich and 74 km (45 miles) from Bern. Grindelwald is the largest ski resort in the Jungfrau Region, and while many people choose to stay in the nearby town of Interlaken, we recommend staying directly in Grindelwald or even better up the mountain at Berggasthaus First. From Grindelwald to First

Getting from Grindelwald to First

We stayed at the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof in Grindelwald village located directly beside the train station. It is a great location for exploring the region, it was also a great place to store our bags while going up to Grindelwald-First for the evening. After checking out and leaving our luggage with them to store for a night, (We would be back in one day to continue our Grindelwald adventures) we made our way up to Grindelwald-First Gondola with an overnight bag. It was time to have a great adventure on the mountain.

Grindelwald-First Gondola

Grindelwald First Gondola

From downtown Grindelwald, we walked for about 10 minutes to First Station to take the gondola up to the top. The gondola ride takes 25 minutes and is an adventure unto itself. Those 25 minutes are breathtaking as beautiful panoramic views of the mountains come into view. Make sure to have your camera ready!

There are two stops along the way, Bort and then Schreckfeld but you won’t have to worry about that, you’re staying on until the final stop, Grindelwald-First. Once you get to the top, there are plenty of things to see and do. Firstbahn tickets start at 64 CHF and include a return ride (32CHF with a Swiss Travel Pass you get 50%). Check the official Jungfrau website to book tickets here. Note: Always have your ticket with you as you need it to enter both going up, and back down.

Hiking to Lake Bachalp (Bachalpsee)

Hiking to Bachalpsee

We checked into Berggasthaus First where we left our bags to leave on a hike to the star attraction, Lake Bachalp. When exploring Switzerland , you will see plenty of photos of Lake Bachalp. It is one of the most scenic and photographed spots in the country.

The hike to Lake Bachalp takes a little over an hour to get to. The first couple of hundred meters are uphill and it is a good workout but not difficult and it quickly evens out and becomes a very pleasant hike to the lake. When the path starts to branch out, stick to the higher ground to save having to do more uphill than you need to. We stayed high avoiding going back down on the main trail.

Hiking markers on Grindelwald First

Make sure to keep looking back while you walk, because the views change constantly. We didn’t have the best weather during our time up at Grindelwald-First, but as the clouds moved in and out, Dave managed to catch some sweet moments where the heavens opened up to say hello.

Bachalpsee (Lake Bachalp) Views

Bachalpsee views in Grindelwald First

When you reach the lake, there are plenty of places to take in the view. We suggest heading to the second lake for an overview of both bodies of water. There’s a lovely bench at the second lake where travelers can leave a note to Simone. The bench is dedicated to her and there is a journal where you can leave your impressions of Grindelwald-First for her to read. Or perhaps her family dedicated the bench after her passing and they are keeping her memory alive with visitors writing to her. Either way, it is a lovely moment to be still and share your feelings of this little slice of heaven.

Simones Bench at Lake Balchap on Grindelwald First

When the weather is good, the scene is spectacular with views of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, and Finsteraarhorn mountains reflecting in the mountain lake.

If you want to do more hiking, you can continue on to the Faulhorn Summit where you can stay at the Berghotel. Make sure to make reservations if you decide to do this. We only went as far as Bachalpsee and after an hour or so at the lake, we made our way back to Grindelwald-First to enjoy more adventures.

First Cliff Walk by Tissot

Cliff Walk by Tissot at Grindelwald First

On our way back from Bachalpsee, the fog had lifted a bit and we could finally see the First Cliff Walk by Tissot. This is a fantastic metal footbridge that clings to the side of the cliff stretching all the way out to an extraordinary viewpoint. If you want a fun adventure, make sure to do this. There is no extra charge and it is included in the tickets up the Gondola thanks to Tissot watches. If you are afraid of heights, it will get your heart racing, but it is completely safe. The path goes along the rock face before spiraling up at the restaurant and then jutting out to an overhang that dangles over the Abyss.

Tissot Cliff Walk in the Clouds

Even with thick clouds, this was a thrilling adventure. In fact, I found it eerier walking into the fog wondering what was below my feet. Don’t miss going out on the cliff walk when visiting Grindelwald-First.

Berggasthaus First

Berggasthaus First Grindelwald

Berggasthaus First not only offers accommodation, but it also is a great place for lunch. Plus, by staying overnight at the top, we had the opportunity to go out on the cliff walk whenever we liked. So naturally, we went again later in the evening. But first, it was time for lunch before heading off to our next set of adventures.

Swiss Raclette at Grindelwald First

We ordered a Swiss Raclette (how can you not love cheese when staying in the mountains) and enjoyed a meal in the cozy warmth of the hotel restaurant. To book your stay at the top of Grindelwald-First and for more information visit the Berggasthaus First website.

First Adventures

First Adventures Grindelwald

In the afternoon, it’s time for adventure. I know, the morning has already been an adventure. Heck, just riding up with the gondola is a thrill, but now it’s time for some zany fun! If you are not staying the night up at Grindelwald-First, the adventures below are the best way to go back down the mountain. You’ll see why in a minute.

To take part in the adventures below, purchase an adventure pass that offers four activities and unlimited gondola rides. Once you’ve committed to the Four Adventure Package, you are in for an unforgettable experience. Prices start at 99 CHF. / / $108 USD (with a Swiss Travel Pass) Check out the Jungfrau Website for details.

Bag Storage for First Adventures

By staying overnight at Berggasthaus First, you don’t have to worry about carrying any bags. This is a good thing because bags are not allowed on First Glider or First Flyer so you don’t have to worry about figuring out what to do with them when you are on the rides.

If you do have bags, you will have to leave them at the top for First Flyer and then go back up with the gondola to pick them up once you are done to continue on. This isn’t a huge deal since you have unlimited gondola rides with the adventure package. When taking First Glider, bags are less of a hassle because you start and end at the same spot, so you can leave your bags and pick them up easily before continuing on.

First Flyer Grindelwald

From Grindelwald-First, make your way to the First Flyer. I will admit my heart was pounding when sitting at the gate to be let out over the mountain slope ready to reach speeds of up to 84 km per hour. But once I was set on my way, I recall yelling, it’s not so bad as I giggled and screamed my way down 800 meters of steel cable. It goes by fast, and before you know it, you are on to the next! You can buy these adventures individually if you don’t want to do all of them. Prices for one adventure start at 50 CHF (with a Swiss Travel Pass) You can purchase tickets here.

First Glider

View from First Glider Grindelwald

It’s not time to get on the gondola yet, it’s time for the next adventure to take you to the next leg of your trip. Sadly, due to inclement weather, the First Glider wasn’t operating, but man it looks like a blast. It’s included in the four adventure passes, and it too takes you down the mountain in a unique and fun way. It’s a zip line with a twist. Up to four passengers are fastened to a giant gliding eagle where they are pulled backward for 800 meters at 72 km per hour before plunging headfirst back to where they started. Boy oh boy, I wish this one was open, but that gives us the opportunity to go back again! You can mix and match adventures and buy anywhere from one to all four adventures, 2 activities cost 67 CHF (with a Swiss Travel Pass). Purchase your tickets in advance here.

First Trottibike

First Trotti Bike Grindelwald

However, we did have the opportunity to get on a Trottibike, and something tells me this is zanier than the mountain cart. These offroad scooters take you on a high-speed journey all the way back to Grindelwald. Never fear, there are brakes and they are easy to handle, so you can easily go as fast or as slow as you like. It’s an adventure for the whole family.

The great thing about the adventure pass is that if you do chicken out or have any problems, you can just hop on the gondola and meet your friends and family at the next stop, so nobody misses out. If you go to Grindelwald, we seriously recommend these fun adventures. We’ve never laughed so hard having the best time in the mountains. Prices for all four adventures cost 99 CHF / $108 USD (with a Swiss Travel Pass) Check out the Jungfrau Website for details.

First Mountain Cart

It’s now onto dry land for the third leg of your trip down. The First Mountain Cart takes go-carting to the next level following the trail down to your final stop. The rain was really pelting down on this day and we missed this zany adventure too, but you can be sure it is up on the list for our next trip back. (hopefully, we will be lucky enough to visit Grindelwald again in our lifetime. If you want to stop here, you can purchase three adventures. You don’t need to do all four. To do three First Adventures it costs 85 CHF (with a Swiss Travel Pass)

Back up to Grindelwald-First

Grindelwald First Overnight

It’s been a huge day and it’s time to call it a night. If you are not staying on the mountain, head to the Romantik Hotel in Grindelwald or do as we did, make your way back up for an exclusive evening at 2167 meters in Berggasthaus First.

So we caught the gondola back up to Grindelwald-First for the night. The final gondola goes up at 5 pm so make sure to take that into consideration when doing your adventures. And double-check the times before you set off. If could be later or earlier depending on the time of year.

Berggasthaus First Double Room

Spending the night at Berggasthaus First is a wonderful experience as not many people stay on the mountain. We had the opportunity to go for more hikes, head out onto the Cliff Walk, or just relax on the terrace to take in the views. Our time was spent cozying up in our double room as the rain was pouring on our evening. Even with the rain, it felt like an exclusive experience as we shared the mountain with less than a dozen other people.

Relax at Cliff Walk Bar

We went out for dinner in the restaurant and enjoyed a quiet evening indoors before heading to bed nice and early for sunrise. By the way, our sleep at Berggasthaus First was the best we had in Switzerland . The duvets were warm and cozy, the pillows were just the right amount of firmness and it was completely serene and quiet.

The bathrooms are shared, but they are large, clean and you have private shower areas. There are games, a common seating area, and you can enjoy an evening in the bar. Plus, the breakfast was awesome. The buffet was filling and we had unlimited coffee and juice. Delicious.

Sunrise at Lake Balchap

Sunrise Bachalpsee

The main reason to stay at the top is to get out to Lake Balchap for sunrise . The first gondolas don’t start coming up until later in the morning, so by staying at Berggasthaus First we had a several-hour head start! We tried to make our way out before sunrise, but it was pouring rain and we couldn’t see a thing through the thick fog, so instead, we made our way out just a little later to catch the morning glow hoping the clouds would lift.

Second Lake Bachaplsee Sunrise

There was one other photographer out there with us. He had come to Grindelwald in 2019 and this time around made a point of staying at Grindelwald-First for two nights to have an optimal chance of having the perfect sunrise over the lakes. We highly recommend two nights at First for optimal chances for sunrise. Plus, you can do all the activities and hikes so there are plenty of things to keep you busy.

Lucky him! Because our morning was a bust. We hiked out for an hour and waited at the lake for another hour, but to no avail. The weather Gods were not cooperating with us this time, but it was still a spectacular experience to be up at the top all alone. The hike to Lake Balchap is about 1 hour one way so give yourself time if you are hiking out for sunrise.

Other Things to do at Grindelwald-First

Things to do at Grindelwald First

Grindelwald has made the excursions very family-friendly as well. If you have kids, you can very much enjoy your time up at Grindelwald-First. I cannot tell you how many people we saw pushing strollers (yes on a mountain trail) or hiking with a baby backpack on their backs. Kids can enjoy the Bort Alpine Playground at the Bort Gondola station and they will also love the Marmot Trail where they can search for real-life marmots while enjoying the carved marmot and benches along the two-hour trail from First to Schilt.

Keep an eye out for Marmots. You can hear their chirps throughout the land as you hike through the region. Our guides always spotted them, but we always seemed to miss them when they pointed them out in the distance. But we found that the best place to spot them was from the gondola. They couldn’t run when we were above them.

Grindelwald-First – The Details

Grindelwald First Details

Make sure to pack layers. The temperatures can vary greatly at altitude. It can be sunny and warm one minute and then cold and damp the next. Pack refillable water bottles for your hike. There is a water filling station at First so you can fill up your bottles before heading out to Bachalpsee.

1 thought on “The Complete Guide to Grindelwald-First in Switzerland”

Hello – thank you for this article. I am doing research on what to do while we are in Grindelwald for 3 nights and this is definitely on our list! We are going mid june this year. I do have a question. Knowing that the weather will make the views hit or miss, we would love to be able to decide last minute which day we want to go to Grindelwald first. This way we can have the best chance of a good view while up there. Would we be risking it to leave it to the last minute to purchase tickets? Do they typically run out of tickets or should this not be an issue?

Jungfrau Travel Pass [2023]: Is it Worth It?

If you plan to spend more than a day in the Jungfrau region, it may be more cost-effective to invest in the Jungfrau Travel Pass. Available during the summer season, this pass not only offers discounts to the iconic Jungfraujoch trip but also provides access to numerous other mountain excursions in the vicinity.

To determine if the Jungfrau Travel Pass is the right choice for you, let’s delve into the details…

What is the Jungfrau Travel Pass exactly?

The Jungfrau Travel Pass (also known as the Jungfrau Pass, Jungfrau Region Pass, or Jungfrau VIP Pass) is a special ticket that includes most travel options in the Jungfrau area. This pass can replace separate Jungfrau tickets. With the Pass, you can enjoy trains, buses, and gondolas to some of Switzerland’s best sights.

The Pass also covers boat trips on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It includes train rides between Interlaken Ost and West, as well as Interlaken Ost and Brienz.

However, it doesn’t fully cover the last part of the Jungfraujoch journey from the Eigergletscher stop at the top of the Eiger Express cable car station. The pass offers a 40-50% discount for this part of the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe ticket.

Illustration of the Jungfrau Travel Pass Area

Price of the Jungfrau Travel Pass

The cost of the Jungfrau Travel Pass changes based on how many days you want to travel in the area. You can pick a pass for at least three days or a little more than a week. The more days you choose, the less the pass costs.

Kids between 6 and 15 years old pay CHF 30.-, no matter how many days they use the pass. Children under 6 can travel for free in Switzerland.

Here are the normal prices for the Jungfrau Travel Pass for trips in 2023:

Jungfrau Travel Pass FAQ

Does the jungfrau travel pass cover train travel to jungfraujoch.

While the Jungfrau Travel Pass doesn’t cover the entire fare to Jungfraujoch’s top, you can buy the final part at a reduced price. If you want a cheaper way to visit Jungfraujoch, consider the pass even if there’s an extra fee, as it might be more cost-effective.

Buy the additional ticket for the Jungfraujoch trip at Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, or Kleine Scheidegg railway station before you go.

Swiss Travel Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass?

The Swiss Travel Pass is perfect for general trips around Switzerland, especially for longer distances and city visits when you arrive. The Jungfrau Travel Pass is best for those spending a lot of time in the Jungfrau region, as it covers mountain trips and offers a great discount on the Jungfraujoch.

Jungfrau Travel Pass vs. Bernese Oberland Pass?

Both the Jungfrau Travel Pass and the Bernese Oberland Regional Pass are quite alike. The main difference is that the Bernese Oberland Pass covers much more of the Bern canton and includes many more free trips on mountain railways and cable cars. The Jungfrau Travel Pass is better for people traveling only in the Jungfrau, Interlaken, and Grindelwald areas.

How to use my Jungfrau Travel Pass ticket?

The voucher/ticket does not need to be validated. Show the voucher/ticket to the ticket inspector on each train when asked. Make sure the dates on your voucher match your travel dates. If you bought your Jungfrau Travel Pass online, you can show the ticket on your smartphone without needing to print it.

Final Thoughts: Is the Jungfrau Travel Pass Worth It?

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is certainly a good deal if you’re in the area for over a day. It’s also a smart choice if you plan to visit popular attractions like First, Harder Kulm, Eiger Express, Schynige Platte, Kleine Scheidegg, and get a big discount on the Jungfraujoch train.

Many of these cable cars or train rides are quite pricey and not included in the regular Swiss Travel Pass. So, buying the Jungfrau Travel Pass can be a good idea even if you have the Swiss Travel Pass.

Should I Buy The Adventure Package?

You can pay for each individual Grindelwald First adventure activity, or purchase an Adventure Package to cover the cost of your activity/activities and unlimited rides on the lift. But is this a good deal for you?

Well, the Adventure Package seems geared towards visitors with no train pass or half fare card.

If you’re driving into the valley to visit Grindelwald First for a day trip—and/or have no train pass —then the adventure package is a good deal if you plan to do at least one of these activities.

However, if you have the Swiss Half Fare Card , the Adventure package is only a good value if you ride the Glider or Flyer or you ride the lift up and down more than one time.

And if you have one of the regional passes , your lift rides are already free! So in this case, you’ll only save money if you literally do all 4 of the activities. And that will only save you a grand total of 5 CHF.

So outside of these scenarios , save the most money by just paying for the individual activities you want to enjoy.

And by the way, the Adventure Package never makes sense for kids if you have the Swiss Family Card , which we also recommend!

Exploring Grindelwald First Top of Adventure — and Beyond!

While these adventure activities are a fun way to enjoy your time at Grindelwald First, they won’t get you everywhere you want to go in the Swiss Alps!

You guys provide amazing information that makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Have you ever considered offering for a fee help with planning itineraries for different locations?

Thank you for your compliments, we’re happy to share! And thank you for the idea! We have considered travel planning consultations, so that’s something we may launch in the future. 🙂

Hey y’all! We are heading to Switzerland next month for our 25th wedding anniversary (we’re actually in Nashville too!) We won’t have a ton of time in Grindelwald, but the cliff walk looks really cool. Is it worth the price up if you’re not going to do the adventure activities? We’ll have the Swiss Travel Pass and will only be in the Interlaken region for 2 full days. Thanks!

Hey Nashville neighbor! 🙂 Congrats on 25 years and a fun Swiss trip to celebrate! In our opinion, Grindelwald First is great if you want to hike to Bachalpsee or do the adventure activities. But if you’re searching for fantastic views and don’t have a ton of time, we’d recommend Männlichen instead. You can reach Männlichen from the Grindelwald Terminal station, or from Wengen. Hope that helps, and happy travels! 🙂

You guys are amazingly awesome. We have been viewing your YouTube channel for information and I believe many travelers will benefit with the information given. Me and my family will be heading Switzerland first time next week. Our trip will be mainly focused at Interlaken area and have been following your advice on the type of pass required. Hope that everything goes as plan. Is it advisable to go to Top of Europe in the morning and then proceed to Grindelwald-First for the activities later in the afternoon? Thank you

Thanks so much for the encouragement! We’re so grateful that we have the opportunity to share what we’ve learned with travelers like you! You could do both the Top of Europe and Grindelwald-First in one day—but just know that it will be a very long day!! And you’ll want to get an early start. The last lift down from First is usually around 18:00. Our main concern would be that we don’t want you to have to rush through either experience. But if you’re willing to take the first train of the day to Jungfraujoch, you could do both and still have a great time!

Fantastic article! About the 3h hike down from First station on the western path (I’m using google maps). Do you know if it’s a scenic one and what skill/experience level is needed? Many Thanks

Thank you! There are so many trails in that area, it’s hard to know which specific one you’re talking about. But trails to Waldspitz and Bussalp are very nice too!

  • PilgrimTransit 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Freezing but spectacular It is a must do in Switzerland if you have not been to the Alps. The plateau and Ice Palace was literally breath taking and cold. Frost on your nose tip and snow flakes falling on your face, was an incredible experience with the majestic view of the Eiger North face. The travel by Eiger express has spectacular views. It was not crowded on the week day. There were the odd ski enthusiasts. Have sufficient warm clothes. It is freezing on top even in April. I gave myself 2 hrs to go through the discovery tour. It was plenty of time to have a snack at the end in the restaurant. The internet booking has to be done carefully as the tour operators don’t change or modify the time. They have strict rules which is set in stone. Seat reservation only means that you will be directed to another part of the coach. There are no seat numbers as one would expect. • vikrams879 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Breathtaking vistas Visiting Jungfraujoch last week was an unforgettable experience, though not without its challenges. Nestled high in the Swiss Alps, this majestic location promises awe-inspiring views and a unique adventure. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side. The lack of sunshine and the strong winds significantly affected visibility, with snow covering everything in sight and the gusty conditions making it difficult to see clearly. Despite these weather-related obstacles, the trip to Jungfraujoch remains a memorable journey. The sheer beauty of the snow-covered landscapes, even amidst the blur of the wind, and the thrill of being at such a high altitude, are experiences I'll never forget. For future visitors, I recommend checking the weather forecast in hopes of a clearer day to fully appreciate the breathtaking vistas that Jungfraujoch has to offer. • ryancR4193EH 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Frustrating Experience with Swiss Rail on Our Jungfraujoch Adventure Our trip to Jungfraujoch, a destination billed as the pinnacle of alpine beauty in Switzerland, turned out to be a rollercoaster of emotions, ending in disappointment and frustration. The journey's highlight was supposed to be the breathtaking landscapes from "Top of Europe," but it was overshadowed by a series of letdowns and a hefty price tag. First off, the cost for two to reach Jungfraujoch was a staggering $316.22. While we expected an unforgettable experience for such a premium, the reality didn't live up to our expectations. Yes, the views were nice, but frankly, they didn't seem all that more spectacular than what we've enjoyed for free in the Rockies. It felt like a letdown, considering the significant outlay. But what truly turned our adventure sour was the debacle on our return journey to Grindelwald. Our Swiss Passes, which were supposed to simplify our travel, became a point of contention. Despite being cleared at Grindelwald with an official even confirming our eligibility to board, a glitch in their system led to an awkward confrontation with a train attendant at Kleine Scheidegg. We were informed, to our dismay, that our passes didn't cover the segment from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald. Acknowledging it was their system error, the attendant nonetheless compelled us to fork out an additional $62.10. This incident was not just about the unexpected expense; it was about the principle. It's bewildering and unacceptable for passengers to bear the cost of a railway's system glitch. Such oversight and lack of empathy from the staff significantly tarnished our overall experience. To future travelers eyeing the majestic allure of Jungfraujoch: brace yourselves not only for the breathtaking views but also for potential pitfalls in the Swiss rail system and consider if the high cost genuinely equates to value for you. As for us, the experience left much to be desired, marked by a sense of injustice and a reminder that sometimes, beauty comes with unnecessary complications and costs. At the top station we found most of the attractions were closed, including the ice palace, the lint chocolate shop. When we bought the tickets, there was nothing to suggest that anything was closed. We allowed three hours to travel around the entire place. However we’re very very disappointed and I would not recommend this trip to anybody at all. It is a waste of Fr.63 per person. It’s quite a steep ascent up the mountain which left a feeling of dizziness and sickness on arrival at the top. To be expected I guess due to the high altitude. Views were spectacular. The Top of Europe Building was not as spectacular - restaurants etc could have been more of an ‘experience’ for visitors. Overall it was an experience but a very pricy experience. Things To Do in Grindelwald

1. visit the jungfraujoch – top of europe.

Grindelwald’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly the Jungfraujoch. Also known as the Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch is the highest train station in Europe, located on the Jungfrau Mountain and perched at 11,332 ft (3,454 meters), just above the impressive Aletsch Glacier .

Year-round snow and ice cover Jungfraujoch, making for a picturesque, festive scene and jaw-droppingly beautiful views no matter what time of year you visit. Speed down slopes in an inner tube, drink hot chocolate on the snow, or lounge on a beach chair with glacier views – there really is something here for everyone to do.

The ride on the Eiger Express up to Jungfraujoch’s iconic glass Sphinx Terrace and Ice Palace is an incredible start to an experience that keeps getting better and better. This is the most modern tri-cable gondola in the world, ferrying passengers up to the top of the Eiger glacier with stunning mountain views over Grindelwald the entire way. The 15-minute journey doesn’t feel like enough.

2. Get an Adrenaline Rush at Grindelwald First

After you’ve visited Jungfraujoch, your next stop in Grindelwald has to be Grindelwald First. First (pronounced “fear-st”) is a minor summit of the Schwarzhorn mountain overlooking Grindelwald – take the cable car to the top for an incredible adrenaline rush among some of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery in the Swiss Alps.

Spend a day zipping, biking, and gliding up and down the mountainside at Grindelwald First. Here, you’ll find a great zipline and mountain glider, as well as downhill non-motorized go-carts and “trotti bikes” that take you whizzing down the mountainside. The zipline and mountain flier strap you in for a thrill, but the go-carts and trotti bikes actually ended up being my favorite activities on the mountain – they were much more “extreme” than their names imply!

Also found at the top of the cable car is the First Cliff Walk. Enjoy this see-through walkway and overlook for free, though if you’re afraid of heights, it can be a bit terrifying to be out over the cliff’s edge! The top of the cable car is also the start of the beloved Bachalpsee Lake Hike, an easy 6-km trail to a stunning Alpine lake.

Visitors can choose to take the cable car to the top and simply enjoy the view – this alone is well worth the journey, with incredible vistas over Grindelwald and the surrounding peaks of the Jungfrau Region. This cable car is included as part of the Jungfrau Travel Pass .

schynige platte

3. Taking in the Views at Schynige Platte

It’s all about the views at Schynige Platte, located just a short train ride from Grindelwald. Expect some of the most impressive views of Switzerland’s most famous mountains like the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau from this iconic mountain destination, accessible via a vintage railway that has been in service since the 1800’s.

Schynige Platte is a great destination for families looking for a relatively easy hiking destination with the pay-off of incredible views. Riding the vintage Schynige Platte Railway will be a highlight for kids, and this destination’s easier trails with stunning panoramas are accessible even for the little ones.

There’s even a playground and Alpine garden for those who are looking for a little less of a hike and more of a relaxed afternoon. For more ambitious hikers, go for the 6-hour trek from Schynige Platte to Grindelwald First – it’s one of the best hikes in the region. Eating at the restaurant at Schynige Platte is a delicious end to any hike.

The Schynige Platte Railway is included as part of the Jungfrau Travel Pass , as is the train from Grindelwald to Wilderswil, where you can catch the train to Schnyige Platte. Make sure to get your Jungfrau Travel Pass ahead of time online before your trip, and download the SBB Mobile app for instant access to train schedules.

mannlichen

4. Hike at M ä nnlichen

You’ll have no lack of great places to hike around Grindelwald. When even just strolling down the main street of town means enjoying awe-inspiring mountain views, you know you’re in for a real treat when you get out onto the trails.

One of the most popular hiking spots near Grindelwald is at Männlichen . One attractive feature that makes Männlichen stand out is that it’s accessible by a gondola (cable car!) from Grindelwald. What better way to start a hike than by enjoying the panoramic views from above?

I also love to recommend this as a hiking destination in Grindelwald because there are hikes at Männlichen that are doable for all levels of hikers. The Royal Walk is easy and family-friendly, and the overlook into the Lauterbrunnen Valley is impressive. More experienced hikers will love trekking to Kleine Scheidegg, though there are plenty of great options.

The gondola from Grindelwald to Männlichen is part of the Jungfrau Travel Pass , so make sure to grab that before your trip! You’ll also want to download the SBB Mobile app for instant access to train and gondola / cable car schedules as well.

skiing in grindelwald

5. Hit the Slopes

While Grindelwald has become an increasingly popular summer destination for its year-round adventurous activities and always-stunning views, it first became a popular destination due to its incredible skiing slopes. It’s still among Switzerland’s best resort towns.

Grindelwald boasts thirty different ski lifts that serve 51 different pistes, meaning there are nearly 100 miles (157 km) of skiing available to downhill ski enthusiasts. 12 miles (20 km) of cross-country ski trails, as well as a terrain park add to the ski experience.

Grindelwald’s slopes tend to be best for intermediate skiers, though there are plenty of great slopes for beginners as well. That makes this town the perfect destination for the majority of skiers , as well as families or groups traveling with skiers of different abilities.

More advanced skiers will probably want to opt for the more challenging slopes of nearby Männlichen and Schilthorn , both of which are easily accessible from Grindelwald’s train station.

Where To Stay in Grindelwald

Despite being a relatively small town, Grindelwald has forty different hotels, thirty-seven of which are relatively small, family-owned properties. This means that you’re in for a really great experience – think boutique accommodations and friendly, personalized attention – when staying here, no matter what Grindelwald hotel you choose.

These are the best hotels to choose from in Grindelwald.

Hotel Pinte ($ – $$)

Conveniently located in the heart of Grindelwald, Hotel Pinte is a simple yet refined hotel that checks all the boxes if you’re looking for a relatively affordable yet comfortable place to stay in Grindelwald. This 180-year-old property is an institution; the restaurant is one of the oldest in town, serving hearty Swiss classics in a charming dining room filled with pictures of the properties from generations past.

Reviews and Bookings: Hotel Pinte

Located along the main street in Grindelwald, Eiger Mountain & Soul Resort is a small, charming hotel with plenty to offer. Rooms are simple but comfortable and offer private balconies with mountain views. The hotel also has a fitness center and spa, as well as an excellent breakfast spread and two great restaurants that welcomes locals and visitors alike.

Reviews and Bookings: Eiger Mountain & Soul Resort

The Boutique Hotel Glacier is Instagram-famous for a reason. Incredible views of the Swiss Alps from private terraces with whirlpools make the hotel’s signature rooms truly unforgettable year-round. Modern design and excellent service at this luxury boutique hotel are just extras when the views are so breathtaking.

Even those who aren’t staying the night should plan on eating at the restaurant at the Boutique Hotel Glacier . The hotel is home to a Michelin-star restaurant with the best fine dining in Grindelwald and is known for its incredible seasonal menu and impressive wine stock – make sure to ask to take a peak at the wine cellar!

Reviews and Bookings: Boutique Hotel Glacier

Bergwelt Grindelwald Design Resort ($$$)

The Bergwelt Grindelwald Design Resort is one of Grindelwald’s larger hotels; the resort’s 90 rooms and suites make it quite large in a town known mostly for tiny boutique properties. Despite being one of the larger hotels in town, the resort’s cool, contemporary rooms and friendly service make it our top recommendation for travelers in Grindelwald.

In addition to its beautiful accommodations, Bergwelt Grindelwald Design Resort has one of the most impressive spas in town. Guests need to make a reservation for a time to use the spa, but spa use is included in a stay. The hotel also has a fantastic restaurant and lively bar, with beautiful outdoor seating perfect for the warmer weather months.

Places To Eat in Grindelwald

Grindelwald has a surprising array of great places to eat. You’ll find much more to eat in Grindelwald than fondue and schnitzel; a crop of impressive fine dining options await, meaning visitors are in for a culinary experience you would never expect to find in such a small mountain town.

These are our favorite places to eat and imbibe in Grindelwald, Switzerland.

The Michelin-star restaurant at the Boutique Hotel Glacier , Glacier is the best spot in Grindelwald for elevated Swiss cuisine. An obsession with using local and seasonally appropriate ingredients makes meals memorable; tasting menus are a highlight, though there’s something on the menu for everyone.

A historic wine cellar with an enviable Swiss and international wine collection is available for private events, but ask to take a peak, and you’re sure to be regaled with stories and details about Switzerland’s increasingly well-regarded wines and spirits.

Avocado Bar

There’s no true nightlife to speak of in Grindelwald, so Avocado Bar is the go-to if you’re looking for an after-dinner beer or schnapps. Expect this cozy bar to be full every day of the week, and the expansive patio space with mountain views is particularly popular in the warmer months. Avocado Bar also serves simple meals and bar food and hosts regular live music events during the summer.

Restaurant Fiescherblick

The sleek, modern dining room at the Fiescherblick Hotel & Restaurant and its adjoining patio space make Restaurant Fiescherblick one of the most stylish places to eat in town. The menu offers fine dining without being inaccessible for those just looking for a hearty meal. A chef’s choice menu makes the most of local ingredients while drawing inspiration from distinct culinary traditions.

Aspen Hotel Restaurant

The Aspen Hotel Restaurant is located on the hillside just outside of town, but it’s worth the five-minute drive to reach it. Fresh, inventive dishes make the seasonal menu shine, with favorites including venison and memorable vegetarian dishes. It was one of the best meals I had in Grindelwald; the views from the patio were the cherry on top of a fantastic meal.

Grindelwald Travel Tips

Use grindelwald as your base.

Grindelwald is hands-down the best base for exploring the awe-inspiring Jungfrau region of Switzerland, so settle down and plan on spending a few days here. It’s our number one recommendation for any Switzerland itinerary, really.

Some of the biggest attractions in the region are right here in Grindelwald: the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe), the adventure sports and activities at Grindelwald First, as well as some of the best skiing, hiking, food, and accommodations in the area. Using Grindelwald as a base will make your trip hassle-free, while Grindelwald’s convenient public transportation makes it a breeze to enjoy the rest of Jungfrau.

Get the Jungfrau Travel Pass

If you’re planning on spending any amount of time in Grindelwald, you’ll need the Jungfrau Travel Pass ! This handy all-access transportation is truly a must if you’re visiting the Jungfrau region of Switzerland, whether you’re based in Interlaken, Grindelwald, or one of the other mountain towns in the region .

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is valid for anywhere from 3 to 8 days and includes access to funiculars, trains, and cable cars in the region. It’s the most cost-effective and hassle-free way to enjoy the Jungfrau Region, and it pays for itself with just a few uses.

While the Jungfrau Travel Pass does not include the entire journey to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, Jungfrau Travel Pass holders get a significantly discounted rate on the journey!

Download the SBB Mobile App

This is a travel tip whether you’re traveling to Grindelwald, Zurich, or any part of Switzerland: the SBB Mobile app is an absolute must! This easy-to-use mobile app offers up-to-date information on train schedules throughout Switzerland. It includes a fantastic system that allows users to input their current location and desired destination and instantly see travel options.

The Swiss train system is incredibly easy to navigate, but I wouldn’t want to do it without the SBB Mobile app. Consider it a requisite of your trip.

Push Yourself Outside of Your Comfort Zone

Some of the best things to do in Grindelwald are quite adventurous – maybe more than you’re used to. Paragliding, ziplining in Grindelwald First, go-carting down the mountainside, and more are among the favorites that made our travel experience one that we’ll never forget.

Of course, stick to the spas, viewpoints, and mountain hikes if you wish, but if I can give one recommendation for your time in Grindelwald it is that you push yourself outside of your comfort zone! You might be surprised to find that these adventurous experiences may become the highlight of your time in Grindelwald.

Alpine sensation

A shudder runs down the spine of whoever enters the 250 metre long corridor between the Sphinx Hall and Ice Palace. Not only because of the frosty temperatures, but also because of the sacrifices made by the miners to open up the Jungfraujoch to the railway. 30 memorial tablets bear witness to this. The music on the way also gives you goosebumps: It brings back to life the beginnings of the Jungfraubahn, together with the images from the time of the tourism visionaries. Even if visitors are more comfortable today than the miners were – they feel relieved when, at the end of the experience, they can pose in front of the giant snow globe and say: I made it!

What a wonderful day! We have a crystal clear view of all the mountains. And the sky is reflected in the Bachalpsee lake. The hour-long hike was more than worth it.

The mountain panorama is indescribably beautiful. Wherever you look, there is one high mountain after another – it's fantastic. My friend and I had seen photos on the Internet and said to ourselves: we have to go here.

Up to four people can take a ride on this Grindelwald flyer at once. If you can bear to look down, the views of the surrounding mountain peaks are incredible, as the fly line suspends you over Alpine meadows.

Though the flyer is weather dependent, it does operate on a year-round basis. It’s an adventurous, fun-filled adrenaline ride, offering some of the finest views you’ll find anywhere in the world. For safety reasons, weight restrictions do apply.

  • Additional cost: Yes

First View Platform

Newly opened at First in Switzerland is the View Platform. This is close to the summit cable car station, it’s open all year and free to use.

The platform is nearly 2,195 metres above sea level, and offers multiple perspectives on the surrounding Swiss mountains.

First Mountain restaurant

Savouring Swiss or international specialities is a superb way to enjoy the views from First. You can dine here indoors or out, so it doesn’t matter what the weather has in store.

Book a table at the Grindelwald First restaurant for arrival, so you can fuel up before taking a hike. Or treat yourself after making the effort, with a meal that you might well remember forever.

Hike to Bachalpsee

Bachalpsee on Mt. First, Switzerland

The Grindelwald First to Bachalpsee hike is the most popular route on the mountain. It commences just above the station you’ll arrive at when taking the cable car from Grindelwald to First.

This mostly flat route will take you through Alpine meadows and past meandering Swiss streams, with beautiful views all the way. You might also glimpse Mount Schreckhorn reflected in the lake, especially on a clear day.

The round trip route is around six kilometres (or four miles) long, and it takes about 50 minutes to walk to the lake, or back. Do bring your own snacks and drinks as there isn’t anywhere to purchase supplies along the way.

Hike to Schilt (Marmot Trail)

An alternative Grindelwald First hike to take is the Marmot Trail trek to Schilt. It begins at the top of First, and passes marmot carvings as you walk between First and Schilt. With a little luck, you might also see some of the creatures along the way too.

This hike takes around an hour each way, and there are BBQ facilities at the end of the trail, by Bettmer Lake. It’s best to allow a whole morning or afternoon, so you can take along a picnic lunch to share while looking out for these small animals.

Hike to Schynige Platte

Another Grindelwald First hiking route will take you to Schynige Platte . This one is for those who want more of a challenge, as it takes around six hours to complete.

The hike from First to Schynige Platte offers some spectacular panoramas. You can see lakes Sägistalsee, Brienz and Bachalpsee, Alpine flora on the Matten, and views of the Jungfrau massif from the Faulhorn.

Looking like an oversized eagle, the Grindelwald First Glider offers adrenaline-seekers another thrilling mountain adventure.

The Grindelwald Glider travels at around 70 kilometres per hour as you glide backwards, towards First. Then you’ll travel at over 80 kilometres per hour while sailing through the air towards Schreckfeld.

Both weight and height restrictions apply, and again you can experience the ride as a group of four.

Mountain carts

Mountain carts at First near Grindelwald in Switzerland

If you’ve taken the First Gilder or Flyer from the summit to Schreckfeld station, you then have the option of riding down to Bort station via a Grindelwald cart. It’s another way to enjoy an adrenaline rush while spending time at First.

The mountain carts are like a hybrid between a sled and a go-kart, and are fitted with hydraulic brakes. A three kilometre trip down the asphalt and gravel track will transport you to Bort, where you can catch the gondola (or perhaps ride a Trottibike) back to Grindelwald village.

The carts are suited to anyone over 135 centimetres tall. Helmets are supplied – and compulsory – and you can travel on a Grindelwald First Mountain Cart between early May and early November.

  • Open: May to November

Bergrestaurant Schreckfeld

Bergrestaurant Schreckfeld in Grindelwald (or above Grindelwald, in fact) offers incredible mountain views while you dine on freshly prepared, home cooked food.

After gliding or ‘flying’ to Schreckfeld, then taking a mountain cart to Bort, you can complete the final leg of the journey back to Grindelwald by Trotti bike.

Hire a Grindelwald First Trotti bike and you can cruise – or rush – down to Grindelwald as fast or slow as you please. The sealed track is fringed by lush Alpine meadows, and includes several sweeping bends.

First Trotti Bikes operate – weather permitting – between early April and early November. Helmets, which are compulsory, are provided. The bikes somewhat resemble scooters, with thick tyres and suspension for shock absorption.

  • Open: April to November

Adventure playground

Enjoying a stunning mountain setting, Bort adventure playground is perfect for kids who need to let off some steam. This is really simple to find, as it’s situated right by Bort cable car station.

The equipment includes ropes, nets and slides, so it should keep the kids amused for a while. As they play, the grown-ups can sit with a drink or snack from the restaurant here.

Berggasthaus First is located at the summit, in the same building as First gondola station. Offering ski-to-door access, it’s a simple property offering a range of accommodation types. These include dorm room beds, doubles and family rooms with shared bathrooms. Some have mountain views.

Jungfraujoch Top of Europe is more about seeing the glacier and the snow, as well as getting great views over the Swiss Alps from this high elevation.

Jungfraujoch

Do you have the Swiss Travel Pass and want to head up to the Top of Europe – Jungfraujoch? This page has all the information you need.

Table of Contents

Is Jungfraujoch Included in the Swiss Travel Pass?

No, the Swiss Travel Pass does not include a trip to the Jungfraujoch railway station. You do, however, get a significant discount on travel to the Top of Europe.

The Swiss Travel Pass includes free travel to both Grindelwald and Wengen . So, you only have to pay for the ticket to Jungfraujoch from there. Normally you will receive around a 25% discount on a trip to the Jungfraujoch from either Wengen or Grindelwald.

If you travel from further afield, the discount will appear greater than 25% because the ticket price includes the “free” portion to those two towns.

Jungfraujoch Ticket Price with a Swiss Travel Pass

Even if you have a Swiss Travel Pass the Jungfraujoch ticket prices vary depending on the season. Prices are higher in the high season, between 1st June – 31st August. The shoulder seasons are cheaper again, with the cheapest tickets of all being between 1st November – 10th December.

So, for example, a Jungfraujoch ticket from Grindelwald Terminal with a Swiss Travel Pass costs:

  • 123 CHF in November

Tickets are a few francs more expensive from Grindelwald town or Wengen.

Of course, if you want to visit Jungfraujoch for any reason, whether it is the epic views of the Aletsch glacier, the Snow Fun Park, or just being amongst the highest mountains in Switzerland, then any price is worth the experience.

Jungfrau Travel Pass: all you need to know

  • Sofía Pozuelo
  • UPDATED: 28/09/2022

On my last trip to Switzerland, I purchased the Jungfrau Travel Pass to visit the Jungfrau Region, one of the most beautiful areas of the country. I made the right decision because thanks to this pass, the trip was much more affordable. This is because the cost of this pass was less than what I would have spent buying the tickets for each train, bus and cable car that I used separately.

In this article, I am going discuss everything you need to know about the Jungfrau Region, what the Jungfrau Travel Pass is, what it includes and, above all, if it's worth buying. I anticipate that this will depend on the days that you are going to spend in the area and the different mountain tours you plan on doing.

Table of contents

Jungfrau region.

Before you figure out whether or not you’re interested in buying the Jungfrau Travel Pass, you’ll need to first be well aware of what the Jungfrau Region is.

The Jungfrau Region is comprised a small area of the Bernese Highlands, the highest area of the canton of Bern. The gateway to the region is Interlaken , a town that you will have to go to if you want to visit this region. In addition, it includes the Grindelwald valley and the Lauterbrunnen valley , where the towns of Wengen and Mürren are also located.

Thousands of tourists visit this part of Switzerland every year thanks to its picturesque landscapes featuring mountains, green meadows, snow-capped peaks, beautiful lakes with turquoise waters, waterfalls, glaciers and charming villages. In fact, Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe), the highest station in Europe is located in this area. Later we will see if the Jungfrau Travel Pass includes entrance to Top of Europe.

This area of the country, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, is a very interesting destination both in winter and in summer. In the colder months, ski and snowboard lovers hit the snow slopes. On the other hand, during the summer, it is possible to go on the many hiking trails with unimaginable views and cool off in the rivers and lakes.

Many of the most beautiful places to see in the Jungfrau area are accessible via cable cars and cog railways. In case you haven’t heard yet, Switzerland is a very expensive country and these means of transportation are no exception to the rule. Therefore, if you want to visit the region well, it will be worth buying this pass.

🏥 It is recommended to purchase travel insurance for Switzerland , since it is a very expensive destination and you never know what can happen. I always use and recommend Heymondo travel insurance, in which I can offer you a 5% discount on your next travel insurance policy.

What is the Jungfrau Travel Pass?

The JTP is a travel pass, available for stays between 3 and 8 days, which allows you unlimited use of all means of transportation located in the Jungfrau Region. This means that after you purchase this card, you will no longer have to pay every time you take a bus, train, boat or cable car in Jungfrau.

Something that you should keep in mind before continuing to find out about whether or not to purchase this pass is that it is not available during the coldest months of the year. You can only buy it if your trip is between April and October (approximately).

This card is recommended for those people who are going to visit this part of Switzerland and who are planning to make different tours in the area in which it is necessary to take a cable car or rack railway. Although it also includes other means of transportation.

What does the Jungfrau Travel Pass include?

grindelwad first

The Jungfrau Travel Pass includes the following journeys (unlimited):

Does it included the journey to Jungfrajoch, Top of Europe?

jungfrau travel pass

The Jungfrau Travel Pass includes visits to many of the great attractions of the region; however, it does not include the entire journey from Grindelwald or Laterbrunnen to Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe).

As I discussed in my article on how to get to Jungfraujoch , it is possible to go up to this place from Lauterbrunnen and from Grindelwald.

If you go from Lauterbrunnen, the journey from Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg and from Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher will be included. The ride from Eigergletscher to Top of Europe is not included. If you go from Grindelwald, it will include the route from Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher. It will not include the journey from Eigergletscher to Top of Euope.

However, having the JTP allows you to purchase these tickets at a more affordable price. Simply, when you go to buy your travel pass, you will have to buy it by adding the supplement to visit Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe. I’ll explain in detail below.

How much does the Jungfrau Travel Pass cost?

At the moment it seems that buying this travel pass is a good idea but I still need to review one of the most important points, the price. Below you will see how much it costs:

* The discount is applied if you have one of the following cards: Swiss Half Fare Card, GA, Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Travel Pass Flex.

As I mentioned, it is necessary to pay if you want to visit Jungfraujoch as well (highly recommended). In this case, the extra fee will set you back CHF 63 (low season) and CHF 75 (high season).

Where to purchase the Jungfrau Travel Pass

You can purchase the Junfrau pass from two different places:

1. From the JUNGFRAU OFFICIAL WEBSITE :

– Advantages. It lets you choose different day ranges and allows you to buy it with the Half Fare Card.

– Cons. You cannot buy the ticket directly with the supplemental fee to go to Top of Europe.

2. THROUGH CIVITATIS :

– Pros. It is possible to buy the ticket with the Top of Europe supplemental fee included. It is 100% reliable.

– Cons. It is a bit more expensive (a few more bucks) and only 3, 5 and 7 day passes are available.

One way or another, you will receive an email with voucher. Once you arrive in Jungfrau (Switzerland) you will only have to exchange this voucher for the original pass at one of the train stations in Interlaken, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen.

Is it worth buying?

Determining whether the Jungfrau Travel Pass is worth buying is easy, you just have to do a few calculations. I recommend you carry out the following steps:

1. First of all, you will have to take into account the time you are going to spend in Jungfrau. As I mentioned prior, this travel pass is available for stays between 3 and 8 days. It has a different price depending on the number of days you choose.

2. Once you know how many days you are going to spend in the region, I recommend planning the route and seeing which places you are going to visit and if you have to take any means of transportation to get to each of those places.

3. After this step, you have to look up how much the tickets cost to visit those sites. Below I leave the prices of the main activities to do in Jungfrau:

4. Add up the prices of all the routes you plan on taking during your trip and compare the total with the price of the Jungfrau Travel Pass.

For example, imagine that you are going to be in Jungfrau for 3 days and you want to visit Grindelwald-First, Schynige Platte and Top of Europe.

The cost of the Grindelwald-First cable car is CHF 64 round trip. The train to go to Schynige Platte is 64 CHF round trip. Finally, the cost of the cable car that goes from Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher is 190 CHF. The total cost of these trips is 318 CHF.

On the other hand, visiting all the places mentioned in the previous paragraph with the Jungfrau Travel Pass would cost 190 CHF + 75 CHF (extra fee to visit Top of Europe). The total cost would be 265 CHF.

5. Something else to consider is whether or not you are going to have your own vehicle. If you do not have a car, you will have to take the train that connects Interlaken with Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen on several occasions. Each one-way trip costs around 15 CHF.

6. Finally, you must also take into account if you are going to have another card that gives you discounts on trips and the Jungfrau Travel Pass: the Swiss Half Fare Card, GA, the Swiss Travel Pass or the Swiss Travel Pass Flex.

Are you going to travel to more parts of the country? Be sure to visit my Switzerland travel guide .

I hope this article about the Jungfrau Travel Pass has been helped you plan your trip to this spectacular area of Switzerland. If you have any anything to add or any questions, do not hesitate to leave a comment or email me. Enjoy your trip to Jungfrau!

PLANNING A TRIP TO GRINDELWALD

Before we get to the best things to do in Grindelwald, you’ll need some basic information and a few tips.

FACTS – GRINDELWALD

The village of Grindelwald is located in the canton (state) of Bernese Oberland, in the region of Jungfrau, at 1034 meters (3392 feet) above sea level.

You can get there easily by train or car. There are paid parking spots (which might fill up quickly in the summer) and the train station is just conveniently located at the beginning of the village center.

Grindelwald is approximately 70 km (43 miles) southeast of Bern (1 hour) and just 20 km (12 miles) southeast of Interlaken (20 minutes).

Less than 4000 people live in Grindelwald, but there are hundreds of hotel rooms and apartments available. It gets crowded in the high season – which is in July August and December and at the end of February!

Grindelwald is close to the peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau , also known as the Swiss Skyline . To be precise, it is at the feet of the north face of the Eiger mountain: it is so famous that Grindelwald is also known as the Eiger village .

Grindelwald train station

Fun fact: This picturesque Swiss village started to be a tourist destination during the late 18th century, and became popular for English climbers in the 19th century. The first winter resort opened in 1888! So, this village has quite a long history of winter sports (similar to St.Moritz ).

Planning to visit Grindelwald in the summer (spring/fall) ? Then consider this:

  • The “summer season” starts in mid-April and finishes in mid-October. During this time all cable cars/funiculars should operate. However, some hiking trails might still be closed in April as there can be snow until June.
  • Most of the crowds come in July and August when there are also sports events like bike races and the famous Inferno Race.
  • The weather can still be cold in April (it might even snow!) and will get chilly quickly in September. Instead, in July and August it can reach above 27°C (80°F) but on average around 20°C (60°F).
  • However, the chance of rain is also high – even in summer. In general, the weather is quite unreliable in all of Switzerland, so it is hard to predict what kind of weather you will have in Grindelwald.
  • Make sure to check the weather forecast a few days before you go and pack accordingly (though even these forecasts might change) and pack layers! When outdoors, it will feel warm in the sun, but refreshing in the shadow or in the wind. Bring a pullover or a light jacket for the evenings.

Will you travel to Grindelwald in the winter ? Keep in mind this:

  • The winter season starts in mid-December and ends in mid-April.
  • It can start snowing even in November, and it may snow still in April.
  • The busiest period is New Year’s Eve, but because of the excellent ski slopes, it’s actually pretty busy all the time.
  • It gets really cold! Temperatures will easily go below 0°C, even when it’s sunny, even in November or March.
  • Make sure you pack all your warmest clothes, thermals, scarves, hats and gloves, and shoes suitable for the snow.
  • Check out my detailed Grindelwald in winter post for more travel tips.

Swiss Travel Pass For Grindelwald

If you use public transportation in Switzerland, I recommend getting a Swiss Travel Pass . I visit Switzerland often, and most of the time I get one – even if it’s a road trip.

☑️ The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to use trains and buses without any extra costs.

☑️ You can also do boat cruises without additional costs – and you can cruise Lake Thun and Lake Brienz which are close by with the regular boats to get around.

☑️ It also gives you a 50% discount on most mountain rides (you can get up via cable car/funicular for half of the price, and if you follow my tips, you will need it twice) and a 25% discount on the Jungfraujoch ride.

☑️ You´ll also get a 50% discount on the Grindelwald First gondola and most other mountain excursions.

The initial prices for a Swiss Travel Pass are quite high – but it pays for itself if you get around via public transportation and are active in Switzerland for more than three or four days. So, check out prices for boats and trains and then calculate if it is a good option for you.

For me, it usually makes sense as I am very active and use public transportation/mountain rides often. I also love boat rides – which means many, many boat cruises for me whenever I have a Swiss Travel Pass. Check out prices for a Swiss Travel Pass here.

  • The Swiss Travel Pass is only for non-Swiss residents.
  • Check out my review of the Swiss Travel Pass.

Where to Stay in Grindelwald

Grindelwald makes a great base – to explore the village itself but also to see the regions of Interlaken and Jungfrau.

Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof : Though Grindelwald is a top destination in Switzerland, there is only one 5-star hotel – this is the beautiful Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof. It is located behind the train station, however, I did not hear any trains in my room and it was quiet! It offers a spa area (what a treat after a long active day) and the breakfast is great. Check out rates here.

Hotel Caprice: This is a family-run 3-star hotel that also has a spa area and is centrally located. I enjoyed the room views the most when I stayed there during my first Grindelwald trip. Find out more about the hotel and the rates .

BEST THINGS TO DO IN GRINDELWALD

There are plenty of things to do in Grindelwald in summer but also at any other time of the year: hikes for all levels of expertise, thrilling activities, winter and summer sports, and also some relaxation.

Visit the Village of Grindelwald

The center of Grindelwald is very beautiful and quite compact. The main street Dorfstrasse is lined with restaurants, hotels, shops, and many traditional Swiss chalets. Stroll among the pretty houses, relax, have a coffee on one of the terraces, and admire the panorama all around you.

Grindelwald is one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland

Because the town center is very “open”, you can appreciate the views of the mountains from lots of places around town. As you already know, the north face of Eiger is particularly impressive. Why? The North Face is the largest north-facing rock wall in the Alps and the most challenging route up Eiger Mountain.

Just above the shopping mall “Eiger Plus“ (a few meters next to the train station) is a square with benches from where you can enjoy some fantastic views.

Discover Grindelwald-First

Grindelwald First is a summit located at 2,184 meters (7.165 feet) above sea level, also nicknamed “ Top of Adventure ”, as you’ll find so many exciting things to do here.

What tours in Switzerland

In winter, First is one of the best places in Switzerland for skiing and snowboarding . There are 56 km (35 miles) of pistes in what is probably the sunniest resort in the whole region.

In the summer, there are lots of thrilling activities to do, as well as hikes for all levels of fitness.

Most of all, the views from First are just incredible. It’s a great place to visit in Grindelwald even to have just a snack outside or a meal at the restaurant while admiring the panorama.

travel pass grindelwald

How can I get to Grindelwald First?

  • You can reach Grindelwald First easily from Grindelwald train station. Walk for about 15-20 minutes to the Grindelwald-First station (or take a local bus).
  • Then get on the gondola. In 25 minutes you will reach the top station – there are a few intermediate stations, but I suggest you get to the top straight away. No need to change gondolas, you can just enjoy the views and relax (if you are not scared of heights)!

Where can I buy tickets for Grindelwald First?

  • You can buy tickets either online or at the ticket center. You get a 50% discount with your Swiss Travel Pass and it is free with your Jungfrau Pass.

Feel the Adrenaline on Grindelwald-First

Okay, now that you are at Grindelwald-First, you can do one of the many exciting activities.

If you want a taste of adrenaline at your own pace, start by walking on the platforms of the First Cliff Walk by Tissot. It is a high walkway suspended on the rocky side of the mountain, which leads to a viewing platform. Because of its gridded floor, you can admire the incredible views all around you and even under you! It is fun and not as scary as it looks.

Cliff Walk in Grindelwald in winter

  • The First Cliff Walk is free of charge, and it is suitable for people of all ages.

Those looking for a more powerful thrill should consider the First Flieger (Flyer) and the First Glider. These two zip lines let you speed down an 800-meter-long cable at 84 km/hour (52 miles)!

First Glider in Winter

With the First Flieger, up to 4 people can fly separately in a sitting position, from First Station to Schreckfeld Station. Instead, the eagle-shaped First Glider joins up to 4 people together on horizontal harnesses: it is pulled up to First Station, and then glides back down to Schreckfeld Station in an exhilarating run.

  • There is a weight restriction for the First Flyer – minimum 35 kg (77 lbs), max 125 kg (275 lbs), as well as a minimum height for the First Glider (minimum 130 cm/ 4,2 feet).
  • Tickets cost 31 CHF for each activity.  Discounts are available for holders of local passes, such as the Jungfrau Travel Pass or the Grindelwald Adventure Package.

In summer, you can also do other activities like the First Mountain Cart which is fun for kids and adults alike. These go-carts have big rubber tires and good brakes, so they are perfect to drive down a 3-km-long track until Bort. They aren’t too difficult to drive, but each has its own, so you are “forced” to learn!

  • The minimum height is 135 cm.
  • Tickets cost 21 CHF.

Otherwise, try the “trottibike” scooter bike . You can rent this scooter bike without a seat or pedals, to ride from Bort all the way down to Grindelwald. It requires a bit more skill than the cart because some parts of the ride are a bit steep.

  • The minimum height is 125 cm (1,41 feet), but it can be hard for kids to brake and steer well.

As you can see, there are plenty of exciting things to do at the Top of Adventure. Here are a few more tips: Some of these experiences may be closed if the weather is very bad. In high season, start your trip to Grindelwald First early in the morning, as it gets crowded and queues can be long.

  • You can buy tickets in advance and also on the spot for these activities.

Here is my even more detailed post on “ A day trip to Grindelwald First ” where you will find much more info.

Go Hiking – Grindelwald First to Bachalpse

The best way to appreciate the Swiss landscape is by hiking! And First is one of the best places to hike in Grindelwald.

Bachalpsee near Grindelwald one of the most photogenic spost in Interlaken

The most popular trail is the beautiful hike from First to Bachalpsee (Lake Bachalp) which is a small, gorgeous lake with a wonderful backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Even though they are far away, they reflect in the blue waters in a magical illusion!

Lake Bachalp is at 2,265 meters (7,431 feet) and Grindelwald-First gondola station is at 2,168 meters (7,112 feet). The first part is a bit steep, but it is worth it.

  • It takes approximately 1 hour to reach the lake from the top gondola station. Add some time for pictures, some rest, and a snack: consider 3-4 hours for this hike, going and coming back. The path is made of gravel, wide and well-kept. It is one of the most popular hikes in Switzerland , so expect a lot of people.

HIKING TIP : If you are interested in a longer hike, consider continuing from Bachalpsee to Faulhorn , which is a mountain, located between Lake Brienz and Grindelwald at 2,681 meters above sea level (8,796 feet) It is quite an uphill climb, but you can have lunch at the mountain hut on top, and it’s a round-trip hike.

Also, there are many easy and scenic trails going downhill to Bussalp or Bort, with wonderful views of the mountains of the Jungfrau Region.

One of the most beautiful hikes from Bachalpsee to Bort is the Flower Trail . During this 90-minute hike, you walk among alpine meadows and flowers, along mountain streams, with amazing scenery around you, and even cows!

Männlichen Mountain Top and Royal Walk

The summit of Mannlichen at 2,343 meters ( 7,687 feet)is the other main destination in Grindelwald for hiking. The hikes on Mannlichen offer incredible views.

Two hikes that are very easy but also rewarding are the Royal Walk and the Panorama Trail. The Royal Walk starts at the Mannlichen gondola station, at 2,221 meters (7,268 feet) above sea level, and leads to the summit of Mannlichen, at 2,343 meters (7,687 feet). The hike takes approximately 1 hour (round trip).

Swiss Skyline and Lauberhorn at Mannlichen Mountain

The 360 panorama from the crown-shaped terrace on top includes the village of Wengen and Lauterbrunnen Valley, Lauberhorn mountain, the Swiss Skyline with the iconic north face of Eiger, and even Interlaken and Lake Thun !

This is also a beautiful and easy winter hike! I did this hike in February and thus, there was still plenty of snow, in the summer months there will be no snow.

Mannlichen

The Panorama Trail is a downhill trail from Mannlichen gondola station until Kleine Scheidegg. All along, you walk straight towards the impressive Mönch, Eiger, and Jungfrau mountains: the views are simply incredible. It takes just 1 hour and a half which makes it a perfect choice if you are looking for a simple and short hike.

How to get to Männlichen Mountain?

  • You can reach Mannlichen from Grindelwald Terminal Station station, or the town of Wengen on the other side.

Where can I buy tickets for Männlichen Mountain?

  • You can buy tickets on the spot or online – you get a 50% discount with your Swiss Travel Pass and it is included in your Jungfrau Pass.

Hike From Grindelwald to Schynige Platte (or Get up Via Funicular)

The Schynige Platte (2,099 meters/6886 feet) is another popular place to visit from Grindelwald – it is a small mountain ridge that offers great views.

Pro hikers should spend a day hiking from First to Schynige Platte , the mountain between Grindelwald and Interlaken. It takes a whole day, with more or less 800 meters of ascent and 600 meters of descent.

Visit the Schynige Platte with your Swiss Travel Pass

It is called “the Hike of the Six Pearls ” because of the six gorgeous natural sights. The “blue jewel” Bachalp Lake right at the beginning; the incredible view from the Faulhorn mountain, which embraces beautiful Lake Brienz , and the massive Jungfrau summit; Lake Sagistalsee that you will admire from above; the Güw Area; and finally, the flowers at the Alpine Garden and the flora on the Matten, close to the railway station of Schynige Platte.

However, you can also get to Schynige Platte the easy way: via funicular . When you jump off the funicular you have some stunning views of the Swiss Alps , and the Swiss Skyline om particular. Walk further up (and through the Alpine Garden ) to enjoy a completely different panorama – the views of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz!

Keep in mind:

  • You can do this hike only from mid-June to mid-October.
  • From Grindelwald, take a train to Wilderswil (10 minutes). There you can take the funicular that takes you up to Schynige Platte (from mid-April to mid-October). That is also the same way you can get back to Grindelwald.

Grindelwald Glacier Canyon

A fascinating place near Grindelwald is the Glacier Canyon or Grindelwald Gorge (Gletscherschlucht in German). This unique 300-meter-deep ravine was carved by the river flowing from the mountains over millions of years.

An elevated wooden walkway leads for almost 900 meters into the gorge : you walk through short tunnels, near a few waterfalls that sprinkle misty water in the air, above the rushing waters of the river.

There isn’t anything special at the end of the path, but it’s still quite magical to walk along it. On Friday nights, there is a show of colorful lights that make it even more impressive.

Daring people (and children) will enjoy walking on the huge “spiderweb” net, stretched from one side of the canyon to the other! An even more thrilling experience is the “canyon swing”, a 90-meter freefall with a rope from a platform above the gorge, followed by a swing in the gorge that can reach the speed of 120 km/hour.

  • Open daily from May to mid-November
  • Prices for adults are CHF 19 – discounts for people under 16 years, groups, etc.

Enjoy Winter Sports in Grindelwald

If you visit Grindelwald in the winter months, choose from the many winter activities. Of course, for winter sports enthusiasts but even for non-skiers. The main locations for winter sports are First , the mountain north of Grindelwald; Mannlichen , the mountain west of Grindelwald (and on the other side there are Wengen and Lauterbrunnen); and the Jungfraujoch .

Winter sports at Männlichen Mountain

At all these locations you can ski, snowboard, go on winter hikes, and sled on long panoramic runs. One unique experience in Grindelwald is riding a Velo Gemel! This wooden snow bike has been used by people in Grindelwald since 1911: it looks like a bike frame placed on two wooden skates, similar to a sled. Rent one out and enjoy the slopes in this fun and weird way!

Eiger Run Velo Gemel with Arzo Travels

Paragliding in Grindelwald

As with many other gorgeous valleys in Switzerland, paragliding in Grindelwald offers a panorama simply unachievable from anywhere else.

Flights usually start near the First gondola station, at more than 2,100 meters (6,889 feet) of altitude, because it’s the best starting place to admire the view of Eiger and the other peaks of the Jungfrau Region, above the village of Grindelwald. Even though it’s an expensive experience, it’s one of the best things to do in Switzerland , and possibly in your life!

Flights usually last 15-20 minutes. It seems short, but it’s definitely enough, especially if it’s your first time paragliding. Companies usually offer a photo and video service for an extra fee.

Visit “The Top of Europe“ – Jungfraujoch

Going to “the Top of Europe” is definitely a unique experience in Switzerland and one of the top day trips from Grindelwald.

View of observatory from Jungfraujoch plateau with Swiss flag

At the highest train station in Europe , at almost 3,500 meters (11,482 feet) there are plenty of things to do – besides gaping at the glaciers that guarantee a day in the snow even in the summer.

Ice tunnel at Jungfraujoch

You can walk through the Ice Palace , visit the Alpine Sensation to learn about the history of the Jungfraujoch and enjoy the views at the Sphinx Observatory . Of course, there are restaurants and a Lindt Shop – it is Switzerland!

Check out my detailed Jungfraujoch guide for more info – or check out tickets and prices here. You have to choose the right place from where you want to start (in your case Grindelwald) and whether you have a Swiss Travel Pass or not for the day of your trip to your Jungfraujoch.

  • P.S. Keep in mind, that there is a discount with a Swiss Travel Pass/Jungfraujoch.

Head to the Große Scheidegg

The mountain pass of Grosse Scheidegg, which is situated close to Grindelwald, reaches a height of 1.962 meters. It is an amazing destination for hikers and cyclists alike, as the stunning Wetterhorn, Eiger, and Engelhörner mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop, and the road is mostly free of traffic.

Grosse Scheidegg hike down to Rosenlaui Valley

To get to Grosse Scheidegg from Grindelwald, take the bus . There is a bus that runs from Grindelwald to Schwarzwaldalp, which is located near the pass. The bus journey takes around 30 minutes.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also hike to Grosse Scheidegg from Grindelwald . The hike is around 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles) long and takes around 3-4 hours, depending on your fitness level. The trail is well-marked and takes you through alpine meadows and forests, offering breathtaking views along the way.

This is the perfect summer activity in Grindelwald and not possible in the winter.

There is a surcharge for taking the pass, even with a Swiss Travel Pass, but it has been one of the most scenic bus rides I have ever taken, so I would say it is worth every Swiss Franc.

Discover Gorgeous Rosenlaui Valley and Glacier

Do not stop at Grosse Scheidegg – I highly suggest continuing your journey to Rosenlaui Valley on foot.

To reach the Rosenlaui Valley and the Glacier Gorge from Grosse Scheidegg, you can follow the trail that descends towards the valley. The hike is around 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long and takes around 2-3 hours, depending on your pace.

Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge close to Interlaken

The trail takes you through beautiful alpine meadows, forests, and cascading waterfalls, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. As you descend towards the valley, you’ll pass by the Rosenlaui Glacier, which is a popular attraction in the area.

After exploring the gorge, you can continue hiking along the valley and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There are several mountain huts and restaurants in the area where you can stop for a break and enjoy some traditional Swiss cuisine.

Then you can either get back to the Grosse Scheidegg by bus or hike or you can take the bus from Rosenlaui and get to Meiringen and from there back to Grindelwald.

  • The gorge is not open all year round , so check times before visiting, but it should be open from 9th May to 20th October in 2024.
  • There is also an entrance fee for the gorge, but it is actually my favorite gorge in Switzerland, so I would say, it is worth the entrance fee if you are not on a very tight budget.

Explore the Cute Village of Lauterbrunnen

Just one valley away from Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen offers a special combination of a cute Swiss town surrounded by alpine peaks and a unique signature: 72 waterfalls.

Lauterbrunnen Staubbach waterfall a top activity in Interlaken with Arzo Travels

The Staubbach Waterfall is the most famous and iconic one: with 297 meters of height, it is the 3rd highest waterfall in Switzerland .

Another impressive waterfall is the Trümmelbachfälle : they are unique because they are 10 underground glacier waterfalls, accessible through lifts, tunnels, paths, and platforms. Absolutely fascinating!

  • The Trümmelbachfälle is open only from April to October
  • There is a 12 CHF entrance fee for adults.

A very relaxing walk in Lauterbrunnen is the water trail walk. It goes from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg (or the other way round, if you are coming back from the next attraction, the village of Mürren), along a relaxing mountain stream.

Head to Pretty Mürren

From Lauterbrunnen, continue to the picturesque town of Mürren, a car-free village that is a true Swiss postcard. You’ll find cute Swiss cottages, pretty cafés and restaurants with terraces, and of course, really stunning scenery all around.

Murren village center in summer

The views from there are seriously spectacular and getting there is an experience in itself!

First, take the gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Alpgrütsch which is nice! But the train ride from there to Mürren is one of the most impressive train rides in Switzerland you can take. It, unfortunately, just takes 20 minutes but the views of the Swiss Skyline – on a clear day – and the scenery is really just top-notch!

Follow James Bond – Schilthorn Mountain

Schilthorn is the highest mountain in the range lying north of the Sefinenfurgge Pass. It is 2,970 meters (9,744 feet) above sea level and lies above the village of Mürren, from where a cable car leads to its summit.

Many people actually know Schilthorn and Piz Gloria because it was the filming location of the 007 movie  “ On Her Majesty’s Secret Services “ in 1969.

James Bond trail on Schilthorn mountain

From Mürren, take a gondola to Birg station (2,677 meters – 8,783 feet)- here is the Thrill Walk . This 200-meter-long walk leads down into the vertical walls of the imposing rock massif. You will also find a restaurant and toilets at Birg Station.

Then take another gondola and head to Schilthorn.

Sunset at Schilthorn

The main attraction is the incredible, incredible view of the Swiss Skyline, which consists of the three mountain peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Wow, what a breathtaking view.

Some might argue the best thing about Schilthorn is the famous Piz Gloria restaurant . Piz Gloria is a 360°revolving restaurant that rotates around its own axis in 45 minutes– offering great views and of course, food and drinks. Inside Piz Gloria, you will find an interactive exhibition that is all about James Bond and the film.

Check out my more detailed Schilthorn guide  for more information.

MORE THINGS TO DO IN GRINDELWALD

Here are a few more activities to do in and around Grindelwald.

Discover the Many, Many Activities in Interlaken

The one thing Grindelwald doesn’t have is a lake. Luckily, nearby there is a town between two lakes which makes for a great day trip: Interlaken.

Harder Kulm in Interlaken and things to do

Interlaken is located between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun . It might be difficult to choose what to do in and around Interlaken, there are so many places to see! However, I strongly recommend cruising on the mesmerizing Lake Brienz , and/or taking the Brienz Rothorn steam locomotive ride up to the top of Brienzer Rothorn mountain .

View from Brienzer Rothorn

Alternatively, explore the town of Interlaken with the stunning park area of Höhenmatte and then head on Harder Kulm mountain (by funicular or hike) which offers great views of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. This is also a nice place to watch the sunset.

  • Check out my post on Interlaken with many suggestions on what to do there.

Day Trip from Grindelwald to Bern

If you had your fill of Swiss natural landscapes, then why not spend a day in the city? The nearest one happens to be Switzerland’s capital, Bern.

Bern Rosengarten View

Although sometimes overlooked, Bern is a very beautiful city. Actually, it is the prettiest Swiss city – and perfect to visit at any time of the year! The gorgeous old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site: it’s full of attractions, like the Cathedral, the Clock Tower, the Parliament, the Town Hall, and many more.

You can enjoy nice views from Rosengarten Park, and then you could pass by Baren Park to say hello to the bears that live there (which are hibernating in the winter): Also, consider strolling along the Aare river, a beautiful area to relax and enjoy the panorama. Here are more things to do in Bern .

FINAL THOUGHTS ON SUMMER ACTIVITIES IN GRINDELWALD

Nestled in the Swiss Alps, Grindelwald is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. In winter, it transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, offering world-class skiing and snowboarding. Summer unveils lush hiking trails, mountain biking, and the thrill of paragliding over stunning landscapes.

All year round, you can enjoy the breathtaking Eiger Trail, the picturesque First Flyer zip line, and the serene Bachalpsee Lake.

It is a beautiful place to visit with many things to do in Grindelwald – whether directly in the village and its close surroundings or if you head out to areas near Grindelwald. Especially outdoor activities will love Grindelwald – and once you visit, you can surely understand why it is such a fascinating area!

Stay safe and have great travels.

Grindelwald Is a Year-Round Adventurer’s Playground

T here’s something comforting about the fact that the Swiss Alps look just how you picture them in your head — the dramatic mountains, the verdant fields, the quaint wooden homes with colorful flowers spilling from each windowsill. Stepping off the train in Grindelwald, a town snugly situated in the famous Jungfrau mountain region, feels like stepping into a postcard. But in this case, you can actually reach out and touch your surroundings.

Grindelwald has a population around 4,000 people, but its infrastructure and accommodations belie its small size. That’s because tourists from as close as neighboring Swiss cities and as far away as the United States and South Korea flock to the area each year to partake in its many outdoor activities. Skiing is a popular pastime, but recent years have seen an uptick in options stretching from spring through fall, making Grindelwald and the surrounding towns within the Jungfrau region a year-round destination for visitors — whether they come for adrenaline-spiking mountain thrills or to commune with nature via scenic strolls, local wines and spa treatments.

Here’s what to do once you arrive, with options for summer, winter and in-between. But first, you have to get there.

How to Get to Grindelwald

Most of Switzerland is accessible by train, so while it’s easy to drive across the country’s well-maintained roads during the warmer months, there’s no need for a rental car. And you won’t want one when it’s snowing. Instead, stick to the reliable train system. Swiss trains run like Swiss watches, and stations are well-marked. Score a Swiss Travel Pass if you’ll be traveling multiple days, then download the SBB Mobile app to access timetables, plot routes and pull up tickets from your phone.

Grindelwald is about three hours from Zurich and four hours from Geneva — you can hop on trains directly from the airports of both gateway cities — and it’s less than two hours from Bern. Each option takes you through gorgeous countryside, so even the transit time feels like a productive part of your vacation. Once at Grindelwald station, you can walk or take a taxi or bus to anywhere in town.

The 9 Best Off-Season Destinations for Winter Travel

What to do during summer.

Good hiking is easy to come by in the Jungfrau region, with plentiful trails and routes that begin from town via a quick train ride, gondola or funicular. The Eiger North Face draws serious alpine climbers who attempt to scale the formidable mountain. But you’re just here to walk, so enjoy the much less strenuous hike along the base, a feat you can accomplish in less than three hours.

Schynige Platte is accessible via a vintage railway that takes you uphill to a restaurant and lookout. Embark on a choose-your-own-adventure hike — options range from roughly 1.5 hours to six hours — and you’ll trek through rolling meadows with multi-peak panoramas always within view and the unmistakable sound of cowbells ringing in the distance. There’s also Harder Kulm, a mountain accessible via funicular that provides a shady, forested path that starts and ends at a restaurant and lookout point. It sits high above Interlaken and looks down upon the town’s two lakes: Brienz and Thun. In the distance, you’ll likely spot paragliders cutting through the air as they descend slowly back to earth.

One of the best experiences for visitors is actually four experiences in one. Take the gondola up from Grindelwald to First , and you’re presented with four unique ways to get back down — two by air and two by land. First Flyer is a seated zipline that whisks you down the mountain at a top speed of about 50 miles per hour and lets you experience flight from a bird’s eye view. This face-down experience sees you and three friends strapped prone to an eagle-shaped glider, then shot quickly backward up the mountain before you’re released to descend back to where you started, taking in the craggy mountaintops and green valleys.

Back on solid ground, you’ve still got two modes of transportation to tackle before returning to Grindelwald village. The Mountain Cart is a three-wheel, gravity-powered vehicle that you must navigate down a winding path, passing by cows and hikers at surprisingly fast speeds. It leads to the Trottibike, a standing scooter that you’ll take on a paved path through fields and around bends until you reach the finish line and a well-deserved beer. Each activity is bookable on its own, or pick up the Adventure Package to hit all four in a row.

No trip to Grindelwald or the Jungfrau region is complete without a visit to Jungraujoch , aka the Top of Europe. There’s no need for speed here — it’s just a relaxing gondola and then train ride up until you reach the top at 11,330 feet above sea level. Given its altitude, Jungfraujoch is blanketed in snow and ice all year, so you can reasonably start your journey wearing a T-shirt and end it in a parka. Check out the observation deck, and on clear days you’ll get unfettered views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. There’s also an ice palace that lets visitors tread carefully through indoor pathways and rooms stocked with creative ice sculptures, plus a restaurant and chocolate shop.

What to Do During Winter

Skiing is the obvious choice when visiting in winter, and Jungfrau region slopes are famous for a reason. If you want to barrel down a mountain, you can readily do so, with three nearby ski resorts (Grindelwald-Wengen, Grindelwald-First and Mürren-Schilthorn) covering every type of terrain, from gentle rolling hills to halfpipes. But there’s more to this area than skiing.

Jungrau’s mountains offer more than 30 miles of sledding hills , including the longest sledding run in the world. Big Pintenfritz is only reachable by foot, and it takes about two and a half hours of snow-slogged trudging to arrive at your destination. But once there, those brave enough to attempt it are rewarded with a 9.3-mile downhill ascent. If that seems like too much work, there’s also the Jungfrau Eiger Run, a four-section sledding safari that changes topography and views along the route. Fox Run is a quick track that requires a racer’s concentration and tactical turns, and Ritas Speedway on Männlichen mountain is a friendly, all-ages option that bends through the trees as you head down to the village.

The Jungfrau region has more than 60 miles of groomed hiking trails, letting snowshoers traipse through this winter wonderland comfortably. First Flyer, First Glider and Jungfraujoch are also open year-round, so you can bundle up and take flight or observe the snowy mountain from the top of the world.

Whether you’re skiing, sledding, snowshoeing or none of the above, Grindelwald’s après scene is alive and well. That means fireside cocktails, wine, fondue and hearty meat-and-potato dinners are never hard to find, especially in town where many of the best restaurants are conveniently stashed inside hotels. Enjoy some well-earned R&R before starting your adventures all over again tomorrow.
