Timeshare Presentations: How to Get Cheap & Free Vacations
If you’re planning to visit some of the world’s most popular destinations, you can run into some hurdles if award availability is scarce and cash prices are high.
Sure, points can help offset the cost, but that means it will cost you a lot of points. What if I told you there’s a way to save those points and snag an awesome deal on your accommodation?
Well, there is – welcome to the world of timeshare presentation packages.
What Is a Timeshare?
In a nutshell, a timeshare is a shared ownership program in which you may use a vacation property for a set time period every year.
Timeshare properties can range from resorts to condominiums to campsites. They can be a good option for travellers who have a favourite destination they like to vacation at every year.
With timeshares, these travellers will have familiar accommodations to return to each time without the hassle of having to manage a fully-owned property while they are away.
Most of the big hotel brands that we’re familiar with have their own affiliated timeshare division. A few well-known examples include the Marriott Vacation Club, Hilton Grand Vacations, Holiday Inn Vacation Club, Hyatt Residence Club, and even Disney has their own Disney Vacation Club.
Generally speaking, there are two types of timeshares: those that are points-based and those that give you deeded weeks.
- In a points-based program, you have a certain number of points each year that can be redeemed against nights at your timeshare.
- In a deeded-week program, every year, you have a “week” of the year that you can use your timeshare.
You do not necessarily need to stick with your timeshare property either. Usually, there is a system or program for owners to swap their property for another destination or property for any given year, building some flexibility into the program.
Despite the perks of timeshares, many people choose not invest in one, as they can be a money drain if you don’t make good use of them.
There are annual maintenance fees for the upkeep of the property that have to be paid, the process of swapping properties can be quite complicated, and it can be a pain to get rid of them or resell them as they don’t hold much value in the reseller’s market.
What Is a Timeshare Presentation?
Whether you feel like timeshares may be a good fit for your travel patterns or not, you should consider attending a timeshare preview presentation.
The timeshare market is a competitive one, and most timeshare vacation clubs will offer some form of incentive for an opportunity to introduce you to their program in the hopes of enticing you to purchase one.
What is offered as part of the package varies by the club and even the property, and it can be anywhere from tickets to a theme park or a show, to accommodations at one of their properties for several days at a huge discount, plus maybe even some bonus points for their respective hotel award programs.
If it’s the accommodation you’re after, keep in mind that usually the package will cover a “standard” room; however, there is a possibility for upgrading, as we’ll discuss later.
What’s the Catch with Timeshare Presentations?
To take advantage of these fantastic offers, you (and your spouse, if you’re married) need to attend a 1.5- to two-hour sales pitch about the timeshare program while you’re vacationing on your timeshare package.
During that time, they’ll introduce you to their program, how easy it is to use the timeshare, the flexibility it provides, the years of enjoyment you will get out of it, and even give you a tour of a potential timeshare unit.
Easy enough, right? Most of the time, yes.
Some sales representatives can be pushy and will pull out all the stops to get you to sign on, because that’s how they earn their commission. You may feel pressured to buy, and they may spend a lot of time negotiating a better offer for you.
Most sales reps, however, are quite reasonable. If you’ve put in your time and made it clear you’re not ready to buy, they’ll send you along your merry way. And if you do happen to cave under the pressure and buy the timeshare, it’s not the end of the world (more on this later).
During the pandemic, some timeshares like the Marriott Vacation Club opted to do virtual sales presentations, and in lieu of a vacation deal, you’d earn Bonvoy points instead.
There have been recent offers of up to 20,000–25,000 Bonvoy points; however, you have to be a US resident to take advantage. For the in-person presentation packages, there are no US residency requirements.
How to Book a Timeshare Presentation
Now that you might be considering taking advantage of a timeshare presentation, let’s go over how you find these offers and sign up for them.
The easiest way is through each respective club’s website. Usually, there is a phone number or online form to complete for additional information.
Hyatt even allows you to book the package online if you reside in the USA.
Once you purchase the package, there is quite a bit of flexibility when it comes to booking. Although the terms specifically say that the timeshare has to be booked within 12 months of purchase, it is not uncommon for them to extend this deadline. I have done this on a couple of occasions myself, even prior to the pandemic.
Once you book your package, you can still change the dates, although some programs will charge a change fee. During the pandemic, there was even more leniency (I rescheduled a Marriott preview package no less than four times), although this may tighten up a bit as travel opens up.
Unfortunately, once you purchase a preview package, they are generally considered non-refundable. There have been scattered reports of people receiving refunds if they no longer fulfill the eligibility for the package, but as always, your mileage may vary and this should not be the expectation.
My Experiences with Hilton Grand Vacations
Hilton Grand Vacations (HGV) has over 50 properties spread across the United States. Their properties differ from the regular Hilton-branded hotels in that they generally offer accommodations with more space, larger and a greater number of bedrooms, and ensuite kitchen and laundry amenities.
Note that not all HGV properties are bookable through timeshare presentations, and some properties are only made available at certain times.
Thus far, I’ve done a couple of packages with Hilton Grand Vacations in Orlando , and another in Honolulu . Here’s a recap of my experiences so far with HGV.
Parc Soleil by Hilton Grand Vacations
View on the Hilton Grand Vacations website.
2017 Package Deal: Three nights / four days for US$199 and a US$200 “Stay a Night On Us” rebate voucher; upgraded to a two-bedroom suite for an additional US$50
A few years back, I had to call Hilton reservations to change an existing hotel booking I had. At the end of the call, they thanked me for being a loyal Hilton Honors member and asked if I would be interested in hearing about a “great offer” they currently had. I accepted, and so began my journey down the rabbit hole of timeshare packages.
I was forwarded to another agent, who offered me the above timeshare package. I was considering a trip to Disney for my son’s fifth birthday anyway, and this would definitely help bring down the trip’s cost, so I bought the package.
When we decided on our dates, I called back, and they confirmed availability and booked our accommodation and the timeshare presentation to be done during our stay – and that was it!
At the time of booking, my youngest was only a few months old and wasn’t the greatest sleeper, and so extra space to accommodate her sleeping situation was desirable. When I inquired whether our one-bedroom suite could be upgraded to a two-bedroom suite, the agent advised that we could do that for an additional US$50, which seemed more than reasonable to me, bringing our grand total to US$249 plus tax.
We stayed at the HGV Parc Soleil, which is a 15-minute drive into Disney. Other than being a bit further out from Disney, it was a fantastic accommodation option for families.
It had two beautiful outdoor pools, one that was zero-entry with a water slide and another for adults only. They had a kids activity centre and some organized activities throughout the day. There was also a basketball court, tennis court, and outdoor playground for the kids.
The suite itself was spacious, modern and clean with a full kitchen and an in-suite washer and dryer. There was also a paid shuttle service ($10 round trip per person) to the surrounding amusement parks, but times were rather limited.
We attended the timeshare presentation on the second day. It was located at the Parc Soleil, which made it convenient.
At check-in, they ask for your ID and credit card, then invite you to enjoy snacks and non-alcoholic drinks while you wait for your sales representative. You can also drop off your kids at a small, supervised children’s room (with toys, colouring, and a TV) while you attend the presentation.
Since it was our first timeshare presentation experience, we did not know what to expect. We were also genuinely interested in learning more about timeshares, which didn’t work in our favour.
They started off with some general questions about our travel habits and destinations we wanted to visit, and then went onto discuss how HGV could make it all happen at a fraction of the cost.
Once the sales representative realized we actually had some interest, he turned the pressure on. He would show us how he had booked various destinations at fantastic rates and began negotiating on the amount of initial investment required to purchase, while offering additional Hilton Honors points to sweeten the deal.
Each time we declined, he would go back to his manager and come back with a better deal.
This went on for a bit until he finally came back with what seemed to be a decent offer at the time, and we actually signed the papers and walked out with a timeshare after the two and half hours.
The agent offered to refund our US$199 package cost, probably as a kind gesture given that we had just bought a timeshare with him, and then sent us to the front desk to obtain our US$200 “Stay a Night On Us” rebate voucher.
Suffice to say, purchasing a time share was not our initial game plan. Luckily for us, there is a cooling-off period built into the contracts, whereby you have 10 days to rescind a timeshare purchase agreement.
With some time and space to actually think about our impulsive decision, we decided it really wasn’t for us and the next day, we rescinded.
The staff were very kind about it and it was an easy enough process, but lesson learned: do not show any interest in a timeshare if you are in it only for the cheap accommodations.
Hilton Grand Vacations at Tuscany Village
2019 Package Deal: Four nights / five days in a one bedroom suite for US$299, refunded after presentation, one $200 “Stay A Night On Us” rebate voucher OR 10,000 Hilton Honors points
A year later, my husband had a conference in Chicago at the Hilton. HGV had set up a booth in the lobby, where they offered everyone 1,000 Hilton Honors points just for listening to what they had to offer.
Jon took them up on the offer, and this time he was offered packages to either New York City, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, or Orlando. They were two- to four-night packages ranging from US$199 to US$399.
Now, you might be wondering: how often you can purchase a timeshare presentation package? As per HGV’s terms, as long as you have not attended another presentation in the last 12 months, you are eligible to purchase another.
We were just over a year since our first package, so we bought another, back to Orlando. This time around, the offer was four nights for US$299 plus tax, so we were a little hesitant as our previous offer was better.
The sales agent, sensing the hesitancy, sweetened the package by offering either a US$200 “Stay a Night On Us” rebate voucher or 10,000 Hilton Honors points, and to refund the US$299 after the presentation. That sealed the deal for us.
This time, we chose to stay at the Tuscany Village, located about 15 minutes from Disney once again. The décor was a bit more dated, but it still had an outdoor playground and a few pools that would satisfy most young kids.
There were also complimentary DVD rentals and a children’s activity centre, albeit a bit smaller than the one at Parc Soleil.
I enjoyed the fact that it was right beside the Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets, which meant some retail therapy for me between theme park days. They also had a paid shuttle going to the amusement parks, but once again, the times were limited.
Our presentation was back at the Parc Soleil. This time, my husband and I had a different game plan: we would tell them that we weren’t ready to buy a timeshare and to let them know early on.
This was working well for us initially, and at the one-hour mark the agent was pretty much finishing up. As we were just about to leave, he advised us that his manager had one last offer for us, which got us our third package…
The Grand Islander by Hilton Grand Vacations
The manager came out and offered us a trial membership to the HGV program. Now this was different.
There was no set destination for the package; instead, for $1,599 (USD), we would be given enough points to redeem for seven nights in up to a two-bedroom suite at any of the HGV properties in North America, including Hawaii.
We did the math and worked out that it would be less than $230 (USD) a night. If it were any other destination, we would have left it. After looking at the current rates for Hawaii for a Hilton property in Honolulu for March Break, we came to see that it was a great deal.
Keep in mind that these are rates for two adults and two children. If you have more than four in your family, like myself, either you’re paying more, or you’ll find that most hotels won’t even be able to accommodate. The fact that we could book a two-bedroom suite was a big selling point for us.
HGV has quite a few properties in Hawaii, with the Grand Islander by HGV being one of the newer ones. We booked at the Grand Islander for four nights in Honolulu over March Break .
That leaves us with three nights remaining, which we could have used to extend reservation to seven nights…
…or book three nights at their New York property, West 57th Street by Hilton Club at the south end of Central Park, another otherwise pricey accommodation option.
Either way, you can see that our $230 (USD) per night beats the above rates by a long shot.
An Even Better Offer…
Sticking with Hawaii as our theme destination, HGV currently has an offer on their website for five nights in Honolulu or Waikoloa for $799 (USD) in a standard room, which brings the nightly rate to $160 (USD) – an incredible deal for a night in Hawaii.
Granted, it’s for a standard room, but I’m pretty sure you can request an upgrade offer to a bigger suite at a decent cost when you call in.
My Experience with Marriott Vacation Club
We originally purchased our Marriott Vacation Club Preview Package back in 2019. This package offered a five nights at Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club for $799 (USD).
After numerous delays and postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we finally enjoyed our stay in March 2022 .
We rescheduled our timeshare presentation after our arrival, and there were no issues with moving it to a different day. When it came time for the actual presentation, it took place in a cubicle in their outdoor Sales Centre.
We wound up going over the 90-minute allotment, and spent closer to two hours there. I was genuinely interested in the program, so it was more my fault than theirs.
Marriott Vacation Club uses a points-based system. Our sales agent offered us the base-level 1,500 points at $15.84 (USD) per point, totalling $23,760 (USD).
As a signup bonus, they were willing to throw in another 3,000 points for the first year.
To put things into perspective, a one-bedroom villa in Maui at peak season could cost up to 4,500 points per week.
We didn’t show much interest in this, and they tried to sweeten the deal with some more offers, but we kindly declined. As we had an exit interview, another sales agent came in to offer us yet another timeshare presentation package.
The first offer, which was good for the next two years, was five nights at the same property for $1,295 (USD). We weren’t sure when we would be back to Maui again, so, again, we declined.
They approached us with one last offer: $995 (USD) for four nights at any of their North American properties, including another property in Hawaii for a $300 (USD) add-on fee.
Our family wanted to visit Kauai in the near future, and after a quick check for a four-night stay in the winter revealed prices at around $2,600 (USD) for four nights, we accepted this last offer.
It goes to show that sticking around for more offers can result in some pretty great rates!
If you’re not familiar with timeshare presentation packages, now’s the time to take a look at them as a means to very cheap accommodations in many popular vacation spots.
Timeshare presentations are a great option in areas where points redemptions are either not worth it (e.g., Orlando, where hotels are generally quite cheap to begin with), or in places where redemptions are difficult to make (e.g., Hawaii where the cost of redemptions are high).
It does require a small time commitment and perhaps a bit of finesse in talking down a sales representative, but in my mind, the savings are definitely worth it.

Amy, please clarify — you said “no” to buying the timeshare BUT they offered you another timeshare presentation elsewhere?
That’s correct!
Thanks for the great information!! Do any of them ask for income verification?
No, they didn’t.
Thank you VERY much, not even the fancier ones like Wyndham or Marriott presentations?
As a previous owner of timeshares and an attendee at multiple presentations I’ll add some comments which may be helpful: -if you buy, it is difficult to recover your purchase price because of the heavy marketing costs built into the price -I have sold my timeshares and currently have some fractional ownership properties to which I have title, which may not be subject to the same haircut on sale -my trading options (including my Hyatt property) are through Interval International which has a network of thousands of properties around the world -Resorts Condominiums International is another trading network, so you are not stuck with a specific hotel program -if you go to a place like Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, you are swarmed at the airport, sometimes car rental places or Walmart, by sellers of these packages -I have a friend who used to fill her PV trips with different presentations, and she was often able to negotiate improved perks for the presentations themselves; she did this for a fair number of years, without buying, before they caught on to her -If you decide to buy, wait, wait, wait; I’ve seen people buy in the initial large presentation with cheers and champagne, only to see deals offered that were a fraction of the cost in later iterations -often you have to see multiple people before you escape, the deals keep getting better, but the original 90 minutes is substantially exceeded -the last one I went to took about 4 hours and I finally walked away abandoning my promised perks
Thanks for the article Amy. I was attempting to book an Orlando offer in my Hilton App yesterday but they only permit USA addresses. When I went to the International website the offers weren’t as good. Do you know of a way to get the same offers advertised on the App?
I’m not sure but you can try calling in and requesting.
Amy, do they ask to see both adult’s ID or license? We are common law marriage different last names. Can we just show 1 ID card?
When you sign up for the package they will usually ask if you are married, etc. If so, they will ask for your partners name. It doesn’t matter if the last names are different. At Hilton, they checked both ID’s but Marriott only checked my husbands (not sure if that was intentional though).
Hi Amy, thanks for the article (and love the family-geared content!). When I click through the link for the current HGV Hawaii offer and put in my zip code, I get a message basically telling me this offer is not available to me. Any idea why?
Hmm that’s interesting. I’m not entirely sure why. Perhaps certain states have different offers/restrictions.
My family has an Embarc timeshare bought maybe 20 years ago… from our experience… currently there is not enough money and points in the world to suffer the presentation. Long story but about 8 years ago, had to lawyer up to deal with them.
I have reached on Marriott Vacation Club for further information and was told there is no timeshare deal for canadian résidents at the moment but if I visit à proporty I can ask over there… not really convenient
Hi Amy, great article and tips! Just a question: is there a limitation on the number of times you can book (the rules seem to say once per year but is this per individual or per family (so a family of 2 adults could do this twice per year))? Thank you!
Hi Amy, Thank you for the great information. You mentioned you were given a trial membership of HGV. Is the $1599 USD a yearly fee? Are there any other fees associated with owning HGV timeshare? Do you plan on continuing with the HGV membership or will you likely cancel. Thanks!
It was $1599 one time fee for 7 nights. Once you use up the 7 nights, the trial is done.
I have used this strategy successfully. As a family of four, we will only stay in a one bedroom or two bedroom if it’s for any stretch of time. Having a kitchen to cook your own meals is a cost savings and easier than having to coordinate eating out all the time. In November 2019 we stayed in a one-bedroom at Maui Ocean Club Napili for only 450,000 bonvoy points. My wife and I attended a 1.5 hour timeshare presentation and received 40,000 bonvoy. The retail value of the room was $7,500 USD. Unfortunately, any type of room at Maui Ocean Club is very difficult to book on points.
I will likely have to cancel due to Australia’s continued strict lockdown, but I booked two 2 bedroom suites at the Surfers Paradise Marriot Vacation Club this December for seven days and 292,000 points each (total 584,000 points). The retail value was 14,500 Australian Dollars. You have to really hunt but can find some gems occasionally.
Thanks for the info Amy! Is there a website for all the Hilton offers available? I was able to find Orlando/Las Vegas by searching on their site, but could only find the Hawaii deal by using the link in your article. And similarly for Marriott, do they have a webpage that describes their offers? I was recently invited by a Marriott CSR to call a 1-800 number to get a similar deal, but would much rather check it out first on a website rather than have it described over the phone by a salesperson.
Unfortunately there’s no central page where all the offers are located for HGV. If you click on the various destinations they have you may see a banner at the top with an offer for whichever destination you selected. If you can’t find a particular destination offer, best to call or email them. Same applies for Marriott.
While staying at an Hilton in Washington DC 3 years ago, we were offred a timeshare presentation and visit for 10k HHONORS points. I said I wasn’t interested unless it was for 30k points which they agreed. The visit went smoothly and interesting, when we sat down to discussed the prices at one point I said it wouldn’t work out since I’m earning lots of miles and points from business travels. And that was it a total of 90 minutes of our time.
Hi Amy, how can you book the Grand Islanders by HGV in Maui? It is opening in September but I cannot find it is available to book yet. I’m looking 5 day accommodation in Maui next year. I really hope we can have the Honolulu’s deal in Maui.
I apologize, we have Grand Islander booked for Honolulu and Marriott booked for Maui. You are correct, the new HGV property opening in Maui is not bookable yet.
Hi Amy, how can you access the HGV in Honolulu? I entered my information and the site says I’m not eligible for the Hawaii deal and instead directed me to Orlando and Las Vegas only.
I would try calling in and requesting. Sometimes they do have eligibility restrictions based on where you’re located or your income. Actually, for my current one with Marriott in Maui, i had to go through a couple of agents before they gave me the offer I was looking for.
Hi Amy – Great article and timely as we’re looking to book a family trip to Hawaii this coming year. What offer did you end up getting for the Marriott presentation?
Hey Mark! $799 usd for 5 nights 🙂
Which property? Offers for me were between $799 and $999 for 5 nights depending on which island.
It’s at Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club 🙂
Nice score! Thanks

I normally use credit card points to book hotel nights — but when I was offered a free stay for listening to a timeshare pitch, I couldn't refuse

A few years back I fell into earning credit card rewards , and have been hooked ever since. I love being able to strategically open and use credit cards to earn points for flights, hotels, and car rentals.
We started by opening several Chase cards , like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, to rack up points within the Ultimate Rewards program and then moved to others afterward. Since then, our family has earned a week-long hotel stay on the Big Island, and flown to places such as Washington, DC, Salt Lake City, and Fort Lauderdale with points .

We've also used points to rent cars in some of those locations. Needless to say, pursuing credit card rewards has really paid off for our family. But credit card rewards points aren't the only way to travel for free.
A free hotel stay without using credit card rewards
Earlier this year I had to change a hotel stay for a conference I was attending in Austin for work. I called the Hilton hotel I was staying at and was transferred to its customer service line. The representative was able to add an extra night for me at the group rate I originally booked at, so I was thrilled.
He then asked if I wanted to hold on after our call to chat with someone about some deal. Honestly, I can't remember exactly the terminology he used, but I was excited about adding an extra night to my stay at the discounted rate so I agreed.

After our call finished I was transferred to a Hilton Grand Vacations representative. I wasn't super familiar with the brand but was willing to hear him out. He walked me through a few different promotions they were offering, including staying in Orlando, Chicago, or Las Vegas.
I was able to get the details for each of the trips, including how much it would cost us out of pocket. I'm typically not one to turn down a good deal on flights or hotels, and love the excuse deals give us to travel!
From our conversation, I discovered that we could stay for three nights at a Hilton Grand Vacations property in Orlando, Chicago, or Las Vegas for around $200 total. Being hotel rooms typically cost around that much per night, I knew this was a deal I wanted to consider, whether for a family vacation or a trip for just my husband and me.
The representative explained which types of rooms were included in the deal for each city (such as a studio room versus a standard room) and where extra fees applied (it would cost an extra $100 if we checked in on a Friday or Saturday). He also stated that we would get $199 back after our stay, making the hotel stay essentially free.
So what was the catch to this deal? Drumroll, please ...
We had to sit through a two-hour timeshare presentation.
A free stay for two hours of our time
I know very little about timeshares. No one in my family or husband's family has owned one (or not that I know of!) and I don't hear a lot of chat about them within our circles of friends. What I do know is that you pay a fee upfront to be a part-owner in a property, where you can then stay for an allotted amount of time (usually one week a year). You can typically rotate properties around the US or the world.
While this may sound like a dream to some people, there are plenty of cons. This type of ownership can be expensive, have hidden fees, and be hard to get rid of if you no longer want it.
Read more: I haven't stayed in a hotel in over a year — here's how I'm using all the credit card points and free night certificates I've saved up
So while we love to travel, I know for a fact we won't be purchasing a timeshare. Although I didn't outright say this to the representative, I did express my concerns and he addressed them. His advice? Set a timer for two hours when the presentation starts and walk out when it goes off if it isn't over.
Of course, I had to accept the deal over the phone (but could decide on the location afterward) or it would no longer be available. These types of decisions I normally involve my husband in, but he was working. While contemplating if this was a legit deal I remembered that my in-laws sat through a timeshare presentation on our family vacation to Hawaii in 2020.
I figured since they had done it before it was a valid opportunity (the deal, not purchasing a timeshare!) and that my husband would be excited about a free hotel stay. After paying, I received an email and text message confirmation. Later on, another representative called me to discuss which hotel options were available at the locations I was considering.

Although I'm not very great at saying no to people, including solicitors that come to our door, my husband is. When I told him about the deal he was a little surprised but mentioned he had sat through a few presentations when he was younger while vacationing with his parents.
After discussing it we decided to use this as an excuse to take a vacation without our kids, called the representative helping us, and booked the three nights for Vegas. We were given the choice between a few Hilton Grand Vacations properties and booked the one with the highest ratings and best location.
A quick Google search showed me that the cost for the nights we booked is between $284 and $334 a night! There will be a resort fee to pay (around $25 per night) but that's still worth it being the rest of the hotel stay will be paid for.
We even invited some of our friends, and now there is a group of eight of us going. While the deal had me a little skeptical, I have no doubt that we will make it through the timeshare presentation unscathed, and have a fantastic warm-weather getaway with our friends.

The Pros and Cons of Free Timeshare Weekends
Who wouldn’t want to vacation for free?
That’s the question that timeshare operators have been asking us for the past several decades.
The free timeshare weekend is part getaway, part sales pitch, where in exchange for free lodging – and sometimes other gifts – travelers agree to listen to why they should buy into a vacation property.
But are free timeshare weekends worth the trouble of attending a sales presentation and a potentially aggressive pitch, especially if you have no intention of buying into the property?
Free timeshare weekends can be pleasant surprises and cheap way to explore a potential annual destination for your family. Or they can be akin to legal kidnapping, where you’re holed up in a hot conference room with a team of slick salespeople intimidating you to sign a pile of paperwork. Or it can be somewhere in the middle. We’ll break it all down…
A Quick Primer on Timeshares
With Airbnb, the reemergence of the RV and the rise of boutique hotels catering to any niche of travel, the timeshare has a lot more competition that it used to. But the numbers clearly show that timeshares are still a favorite way to vacation: More than 8 million Americans, or 7 percent of U.S. households, own one. Part of one, that is. 1
The concept behind timeshares is a simple one. Rather than shelling out for a vacation home that’s all your own, you go in with several other joint owners. It’s called fractional ownership.
From there, it can get pretty complicated. For example, you might be assigned one or more fixed weeks each year during which the property is “yours.” Or you may have the chance to reserve different weeks, known as a floating arrangement. Or you may even be part of an exchange, where you get to visit other properties while other folks visit yours. There are even systems where you earn points by buying into different properties, which you can then exchange for timeslots at other timeshares. It gets pretty complicated.
The rationale behind these scenarios is the same: Why pay for and maintain a vacation house when you’re not going to live there year long? And at the same time, why not stay somewhere a bit more comfortable and familiar than a traditional hotel?
There is also one more common thread: fees. Timeshare owners will pay an initial fee to buy into a property, the purchase price, as well as an annual maintenance fees to a third-party operator – even if they don’t stay in the timeshare that year. Not paying your maintenance fees, which average about $700 per year, can trigger the foreclosure of your timeshare. 2
Earning a Free Timeshare Weekend Invitation
There are a number of reasons why you might be invited to a free timeshare weekend. Perhaps you actually answered a telemarketer’s call instead of letting it go to voicemail. Or you opened a piece of direct mail instead of tossing it. Or maybe, out of curiosity, you swung by a strange kiosk at a mall or street festival. You can always type “timeshares” into Google and click your way to an invite, too.
There will be some level of screening before you can get invited to a free timeshare weekend. You’ll likely need to be at least 25 to 30 years old, and be married or at least have a significant other. There might be some income qualifications, too. In other words, single and broke Spring Breakers need not apply. They want serious potential buyers.
The locations of timeshare properties are often where you might guess: near Disney World and major theme parks, ski slopes and beaches. 3 You can find them at all popular vacation destinations.
The Pros of a Free Timeshare Weekend
Remember, it’s free. If you can stomach a PowerPoint presentation and a sales pitch, then you’re home free.
That said, you need to be careful that you do follow through on all your obligations, including attending any mandatory meetings or meals, or you may be denied your free accommodations or other giveaways. Often times, you may be asked to put down a credit card, and not until after you complete your free timeshare weekend obligations do you receive a voucher or some other release from payment. There are many stories out there about travelers who skipped a sales meet-up or were caught lying in their initial screening questions who ended up footing the bill.
There is another reason to take a free timeshare weekend: you have real interest in a property and want to take it for a test drive. In that case, enjoy a nice weekend without feeling the guilt of bending the truth a bit.
Here is a tip: if you’re just playing the role of a potentially interested timeshare owner, just have fun with it. Don’t fret or get anxious. Don’t sweat the sales pitch, even if you’re heavily pressured by multiple sales people. Enjoy free accommodations, food and time away. And just say “no” – unless you came intending to say yes. 4
The Cons of a Free Timeshare Weekend
This list is a little longer.
First, let’s state that many – most even – free timeshare weekends are legit sales promotions run by credible companies. But some are, well, sketchy. At best.
First off, if you’re offered free accommodations, be sure you know where. Many timeshares put you up in the actual units so that you can experience your potential new second home first hand. However, many will put you up in nearby hotels, some of which are not quite 5-star resorts. This can be further complicated by however the timeshare operators are handling transportation. If the timeshare operators are busing you back and forth between your hotel and the timeshare sales site, you’re at their mercy. Make sure your phone is charged and bring a snack.
The average time for the mandatory tour and sales presentation is about 90 minutes. But some folks report being held up much, much longer – as much as a full day. And the longer you say “no,” the more sales reps they may send your way, extending your stay. The result is that if you’re hoping to explore the Outer Banks, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, or Lake Tahoe’s actual lake, you may have far less time than you imagined.
We’ve already talked about the possible awkwardness about being stuck in a high-pressure cooker where slick sales reps readily apply guilt, coercion and misinformation to their pitches. But we realize there is also the possibility that you’re interested in buying into a timeshare, or at least going into it with an open mind. Be sure to ask pointed, direct questions about the true investment value of the unit, the total cost of ownership – including upfront fees – and whether or not you have a cancellation period to withdraw from the investment. 3
Free timeshare weekends can be a fun and fee-free weekend, whether you’re there to objectively scout out a family vacation destination or simply for the freebies. Just remember to ask a lot of questions, read the fine print and take a deep breath if the pressure gets to you. Everything comes with a price – even a free timeshare weekend.

Timeshare Tours Explained: Evaluate Your Vacation Investment
Starting a timeshare tour can come with a lot of skepticism because people often think of the industry as full of pushy sales tactics. However, this view doesn’t completely cover the real benefits and learning opportunities that these tours can give to someone thinking about buying a timeshare. Knowing how the tours work, what to expect, and how to handle the sales strategies can change a scary experience into something helpful and worthwhile.
The Structure of Timeshare Tours
The structure of timeshare tours is designed to be engaging and informative, typically unfolding over the course of seventy minutes to two hours. These tours begin with the enticing offer of incentives—such as gifts or exclusive perks—which serve as a primary draw to attract potential buyers to explore the resort’s offerings more closely. It’s this initial lure that convinces many to step through the resort’s doors, intrigued by what could potentially be a significant investment in their future vacation experiences.
After bringing the attendees together, the tour moves into its learning phase. This important part aims to teach everyone about the company, show off its resorts, and explain how their timeshare ownership works. The goal is to inform people but also make them feel at ease. To do this, the atmosphere is kept casual and friendly, often with snacks and drinks available. This approach makes the information sharing feel more like a friendly chat than a sales pitch.
During this part of the tour, the guides hand out informational packets, brochures, and pamphlets to everyone. These materials add to what’s said in the presentation, letting attendees go over the details again at their own speed and when they choose. This gives them a chance to better understand the information, maybe even leading to questions or things they want to ask about later during the tour or after it ends.
Exploring the Property
The exploration segment of the timeshare tour is where the magic happens for many attendees. It’s this part of the tour that acts as the primary “hook,” captivating prospective buyers by immersing them in the actual environment they’re considering investing in. Participants are led on a guided journey through the resort’s premises, with a special focus on showcasing the property’s standout amenities and facilities. This could include everything from luxurious pools and recreational areas to spas, fitness centers, and dining establishments, all aimed at highlighting the resort’s appeal and the lifestyle it promises.
The tour goes beyond the public areas and into the core of where guests would stay—the model units. The organizers carefully choose these units to show off what kinds of living spaces the resort offers. Usually, they focus on two-bedroom units for these demonstrations. They set up these units to show their flexibility. For example, they might show how you can use a two-bedroom lock-off unit in different ways: as a big space for families or split into a small studio and a separate one-bedroom unit. This versatility is a big selling point because it shows guests how they can tailor the space to fit different kinds of vacations.
This hands-on walkthrough is crucial. It transforms abstract concepts and amenities listed on paper into a concrete, visual experience. Attendees can physically move through the spaces, assess the quality of the accommodations, and truly picture themselves and their families enjoying their time there. It’s an opportunity to feel the ambiance of the resort, understand the layout of the units, and evaluate the practicality and comfort of the spaces.
The Sales Pitch: Navigating the Pressure
At the end of the timeshare tour, participants usually move from looking at model units back to the presentation room. This is when the sales pitch starts, which is why timeshare tours sometimes get a bad name. The mood changes as the tour’s focus moves from showing what the resort has to offer to trying to get attendees to commit to buying. This part of the tour is where you’re most likely to face aggressive sales tactics, especially at smaller resorts or those eager to make quick sales.
Sales representatives may employ a variety of strategies aimed at persuading attendees to make a purchase on the spot. These can range from highlighting the exclusivity and limited availability of timeshare slots to offering special deals that “expire” at the end of the presentation. The intensity of the sales pitch can vary, but it’s designed to create a sense of urgency, pushing participants toward making a financial commitment then and there.
Navigating this portion of the tour requires a blend of resolve and diplomacy. Attendees may find themselves needing to firmly, yet politely, communicate their position. Whether it’s a matter of needing time to think over the decision, wanting to discuss it with family, or simply not being ready to commit, expressing these sentiments clearly can help manage the pressure. It’s important for participants to remember that despite the urgency conveyed by the sales team, the decision to invest in a timeshare is significant and merits careful consideration.
Making an Informed Decision
The proposition of changing the way you vacation forever is undeniably attractive, a sentiment often emphasized during the timeshare pitch. This vision of seamless global travel and luxurious resort stays paints a picture of an idyllic future of holidaying. Yet, the leap into timeshare ownership is one that demands careful consideration and informed decision-making.
Prospective timeshare buyers are urged to delve deeply into independent research following their tour experience. This exploration should extend into the timeshare resale market, a sector that can offer the same vacation opportunities at a fraction of the price of buying directly from a resort or developer. The resale market’s potential for savings is substantial, making it a crucial consideration for anyone contemplating timeshare ownership.
While direct purchases from developers might come with certain exclusive benefits or perks—such as preferred booking windows, bonus points, or membership in loyalty programs—evaluating these advantages in the context of overall cost and long-term value is essential. Buyers should scrutinize the details of what ownership truly entails, including maintenance fees, potential for exchange, and the flexibility of use.
Understanding the nuances of different ownership programs is also key. Some may offer more flexibility or additional benefits that could enhance the value of a direct purchase for certain families. On the other hand, the allure of lower upfront costs in the resale market could be more aligned with the financial and vacationing preferences of others.
Timeshare tours might make you nervous, but they can be a great way to learn if you’re thinking about buying a timeshare. If you go into these tours knowing what they’re about and aware of any traps, you can get a lot of useful information. Whether buying a timeshare is a good idea depends on the person, but knowing what you’re getting into helps you make a smart choice about your future vacations.

How to Take a Free Vacation with No Scams, Timeshares, or Sweepstakes
Sharing is caring!
I’m sure that you’ve heard about or been offered a supposedly free vacation if you’ll just come down and listen to a timeshare presentation for a few hours or enter one of those sweepstakes online to win a vacation.
With the former, you’ve got to put up with high-pressure sales tactics aimed to get you to shell out thousands of dollars in order to get your “free vacation” and with the latter you’ve got about a one in a bazillion chance of actually winning something since they are just trying to collect your info to sell you stuff… Then, of course, there are even more nefarious offers of free travel or trips that end up being scams that swindle you out of money.
But what if there was a way to take a free vacation without ANY of that garbage? Well, there definitely is. With a bit of foresight and pre-planning, you and your loved ones can save thousands of dollars (literally) on your next vacation… No strings attached and no tricks.
These tactics work for some of the most sought after destinations in the world, including the big expensive global metropolises or beachfront resorts in tropical locales.
A Recent Free Vacation
I’ve been traveling the world continuously for the past few years, which means that I have got to travel on the cheap by necessity. Thankfully, full-time travel is much more affordable than a short vacation… But I’ve also used this strategy to take my own free vacation (yeah, a vacation from my normal travel lifestyle, haha) and in the processed saved thousands on a single trip.
One big free vacation was a trip to New York City with my girlfriend, which is obviously among the most expensive destinations on earth, and yet we managed to pay nothing for five nights of lodging in a beautiful hotel in downtown Manhattan (steps from the World Trade Center and other attractions), rather than staying at the far outer edge of some other borough to save money.
The hotel was quite large for Manhattan standards, including a small kitchen with a full-size fridge (perfect for saving even more money), had an excellent view of surrounding skyscrapers like the Woolworth Building, and even offered up a full, hot buffet breakfast every morning. So it was free and included a full meal to start our day!
Needless to say, we were NOT staying in some dump… On the contrary, it was quite a nice hotel, even if it wasn’t five-stars, and is just the kind of thing that most people are looking for while on vacation, even free ones!
Not only that but we also managed to get free flights to and from New York City as well… I should asterisk that free flight as being almost free because we did have to pay some taxes and fees which totaled about $100 per person, but still, that’s basically free when it comes to flying! The first flight was domestic between Seattle and NYC, and the second was international between NYC and Medellin, Colombia.
So, in the end, we saved well over $2,500 on the hotel room for five nights, and we saved another $1,200 in total for the flights to and from NYC for the both of us.
In total, we saved at least $3,700 on ONE vacation! Of course, we had expenses on the ground, but thankfully there are plenty of awesome things to see and do when in New York City on a budget, and we only spent around $500 (including eating in airports, ground transport, and such). That’s normally what people spend for two nights in a hotel in NYC. With the flights, it was $700 in total.
So, to wrap up, we got five nights at a nice hotel in Manhattan, two round trip flights, and six days to explore as much of NYC as we could for just $700… Not too shabby! These folks took a $6,000 vacation for free! It’s totally doable…
How to Take a Free Vacation
Interested in how you could take your own similarly free vacation (or cheap if we count on the ground expenses)… Well, travel hacking is the key element to free travel… It is something that I’ve talked about a lot on this website and basically involves racking up points or miles on in order to take a free vacation. We will be covering the basics here of how to do it here.
In order to get a free vacation, you will need to identify the best travel credit cards currently on offer… There are offers for airline credit cards, hotel credit cards, and flexible credit cards (where you can transfer the points). The offers in the United States are hard to rival, but there are similar sorts of offers in many other countries that have well-established credit card marketplaces and competition.
A few of my recent favorite travel hacking credit cards are:
- Barclay’s AAdvantage Aviator – Airline specific
- Chase Sapphire Preferred – Flexible points
- Chase Marriott Bonvoy CC – Hotel specific
I’ve used all three of these cards recently in order to score HUGE bonuses. The Barclay’s card is about the easiest possible travel hack ever and is worth doing just to get your feet wet, or just to get a taste of the whole travel hacking thing and how awesome it is.
The Marriot Credit Card is a pretty solid deal too, beyond the initial sign-up bonus which will get you a number of free nights (it got us almost all the way to five free nights in Manhattan), you get an annual free night certificate. You can use that certificate on some pretty high-end properties, like when I used it at the Medellin Marriott Hotel with all sorts of cool benefits like hotel lounge access with FREE wine and food (in addition to things like the normal hotel buffet breakfast).
A few other notable cards that I haven’t utilized yet are Capital One Venture Rewards, Bank of America Travel Rewards card, so check them out too. But I’d say the easiest first-time travel hack is the Barclay’s card , and the best of three I mentioned earlier is the Chase Sapphire Preferred because of the flexibility offered by the points (which you can use for either flights or hotels).
Note: The Chase Sapphire Reserve card may be better by the numbers but only if you are already a frequent traveler due to the $550 annual fee, for the casual or first-time user, the Preferred is a much better choice.
Read More: Best Travel Credit Cards
So, you’re going to want to target ONE of those credit cards to start with because you will need to meet a minimum spend (often $3,000 within three months) in order to get the sign-up bonus. Then after doing one, you can grab another card. There are even “Trifectas” where you get three cards among one provider to maximize your points — highly recommended!
The goal is to spend NOTHING more than you would have otherwise spent. That means you should concentrate all of your normal personal spending on this card and you should plan your application before you have any major upcoming purchases. There are a few other little tricks to being able to meet the minimum spend, but I’ve already written a lot about that:
Read More: Credit Card Minimum Spend Tricks
How Long Until Your Free Vacation?
So, if you targeted an airline credit card to start with, you should have met the minimum spend requirement within three months. Congrats! You just got a free flight.
You should then turn your focus to a hotel credit card next to secure your accommodations. The deal is exactly the same here, just concentrate all your spending on this new credit card and within another three months, you will have met the minimum.
So within six months total time, you can easily rack up enough points and miles from travel hacking in order to score a free vacation. In this case, the free travel will cover both lodging and flights.
If you are married or in a relationship, you can both do these tactics simultaneously with the same credit cards (double up on airline miles or hotel points) or focus on separate aspects (one doing an airline credit card and one doing a hotel credit card). This is a surefire way to turn “two free nights” into “four free nights” instantly.
If you have kids or other family members that you will be traveling with, then you may need to rack up considerably more points or miles, and thus may need more lead time, but six to twelve months (leaving some time to actually plan the details of a trip after getting the points) should be enough time for almost anybody to score their next free vacation, saving thousands of dollars in the process.
I am always trying to travel on a budget and save money, which usually means I don’t spring for luxury type things… The big exception, of course, is when travel hacking and scoring these free vacations. Thanks to this approach I’ve been able to fly first class for free, enjoy the VIP airport lounges, and stay in hotels that normally cost more than $400 per night (something I would never do if I was paying out of pocket).
As you can see, travel hacking is useful not only for general travel and saving money but also for those who would like a little taste of luxury but don’t really have the bank account to back it up.
Is It Worth It?
Many people have asked me whether the hassle or effort is worth it when it comes to travel hacking, and my answer is always a resounding YES! First of all, there really isn’t that much effort to it… I’ve already told you about a few of the best travel hacking credit cards available. The next big step is to just focus all your spending on that one credit card, which may require you to go in and update some of your regular monthly bills online.
From there it is just a matter of keeping tabs on how much you are spending each month on that card (I use Mint.com ) so you don’t fall short. That’s it in terms of the initial part. I also put a reminder on my calendar to cancel the card before the end of the year if it isn’t one I want to keep (a five to ten-minute phone call).
In terms of booking the flight, that is basically the same process as you book any other flight, you use the airline search portal and just click on Use Miles or Award Reservation (different places use different phrasing), then the results come back with the price in miles instead of dollars. If you’ve never used award miles, don’t worry, it is super straightforward. If you’ve bought a flight online, you can book award miles.
Read More: Questions and Concerns About Travel Hacking
If someone like me who has a very low cost of living and low income can take advantage of travel hacking, then there is no doubt that the vast majority of Americans (who have higher incomes and expenses) can much more easily take advantage of travel hacking and also do so much more regularly, if they wanted. For me, I do have to plan a little more carefully in terms of when I time my credit card applications (right before big expenses).
So there you have it, a no-nonsense guide to how you can easily earn a free vacation with none of those scams, tricks, timeshares, or other junk that usually comes with a “free vacation”. No thanks, I’ll stick to my way. If you get started now, then I have no doubt that you will be able to get your free vacation within the next twelve months.
Travel hacking is the easiest way by far to score a free vacation is something that I recommend to everyone that loves traveling… Once you go free, you’ll never back.

- You should already have a good handle on the fundamentals of personal finance , including not carrying a balance on any consumer debt before you get started. Free travel via travel hacking ONLY makes sense if you aren’t paying high interest to get it! Review my article about conquering debt if you need it.
- Identify your travel goals and timeline, including whether you are targeting free flights or free hotel stays to start with, what airline network best services either your local airport or your dream vacation.
- Find the best credit cards for travel hacking that will help you meet your goals. I love the Barclay AAdvantage , Chase Sapphire , and Chase Marriott Rewards cards.
- Apply for your new credit card before any big expenses (existing travel, electronics, auto repairs, taxes, etc) and put all of your recurring bills or other expenses onto the new card. Read more about credit card minimum spend tricks .
- Put a note on your calendar 11 months from now about the upcoming annual fee, this will ensure that you can call to either cancel or downgrade the card before the fee hits if you want. I use Google Calendar for this.
- Sign up for Mint.com (free) to track your spending on this new credit card to ensure that you meet the minimum spend. Mint is also a great way to help manage your personal finances in general.
- Join Award Wallet to keep track of your points and miles across all loyalty programs to ensure that you don’t forget about them and accidentally let them expire.
- Keep maximizing your point earnings by joining airline dining programs, using the airline shopping portals, and double-dipping on points by buying gift cards for upcoming purchases.
- Enjoy your travel hacking lifestyle and the ensuing free vacations! WARNING: it will make you NEVER want to pay full price again in the future.
I hope this helped you get started travel hacking! I know it can be confusing when you are just getting started, which is why I started writing so extensively about it!

A free vacation for $700?? I guess we have very different definitions of the word free.
Well, it’s all basically free in terms of travel, but you’ll be hard pressed if you want to eat and do stuff once you get there… You can’t even eat for free if you stay home either.
I can’t find a free room after testing this… IDK what’s smmmmmmmmmmmm

How to Book a Timeshare Tour

A timeshare tour is a tour that you take of timeshare property by agents and salespeople in the hopes that you will buy the timeshare property. As an incentive to get you to come take their tour or listen to their presentation, they often offer vacation packages at significantly reduced rates. While this can be a high-pressure trap for some people, others take advantage of cheaper vacations in exchange for a few hours of their time. Others are actually interested in purchasing a timeshare. If you are interested in trying a timeshare tour to scope out timeshare property or for a cheaper vacation, follow these tips to avoid scams and resist the high-pressure sales pitch.
Booking Your Timeshare Tour
- Timeshare vacation deals can be found online through timeshare vacation package websites and resort websites. They may also be available as exclusive deals when you book travel arrangements to other hotels. [1] X Research source
- Examples of timeshare vacation package deals are: 3 nights in a one bedroom condo and 2 attraction tickets in Orlando for under $400; 4 nights for 2 adults and 2 children under 12 years of age in Cancun for under $500.
- Many vacation packages choose a hotel for you based on availability. This means you might end up in a hotel without convenient transportation, which could provide added expenses to your trip. [2] X Research source
- These websites will send you offers from many different destinations, such as Orlando, Hawaii, and even Cancun.
- Other websites let you choose the cities in which you would be interested in attending a presentation, and then they gather packages from different resorts and developers and provide you with packages.
- By contacting the company, you also can find out what is included in the presentation, such as the incentives and the length of the presentation. This way you know what you are getting into beforehand and avoid any surprises that may end up with you paying more than you expected.
- Most packages require you to be between 25-75 years of age. For some, you will have to be 30.
- Some vacation packages require a minimum household yearly income, such as $40,000-$50,000. One member of the family must have a minimum credit score set by the company. [3] X Research source
- Certain vacation packages require you to be married.
- Sign up over the internet through the vacation or resort website. To sign up for the deal, you will have to provide your full name, your home address, your telephone, and your credit card information.
- Book the vacation over the phone. If giving your information to a company over the internet bothers you, contact the company or resort directly. Many of these timeshare presentation websites have an option for you to fill out a form or send an e-mail to let an agent know that you are interested. The agent will then contact you, and you can sign up for the deal over the phone.
- These fees include taxes, daily resort fees, service charges, among other vacation-specific charges. [4] X Research source
- There might be additional fees added to holidays, peak-season dates, and weekend days.
- If they have your credit card on file, the resort can charge you the difference between the regular price and the discounted rate for your stay. [5] X Research source
- Other timeshare promotions will hold the voucher for your last night's stay until after you sit through the presentation.
- Some timeshare presentations can end up lasting all day, despite claiming to be only 90 minutes.
Avoiding Scams and Sales Pressure
- Don't fall for sales pitches that pressure you into committing right away. Many times, the salesperson will use a tactic claiming that the offer will expire or that it is a one time offer.
- If you are seriously interested in a timeshare, make an informed decision instead of buying because you are afraid a deal will get away. No deal is so good that you won't be able to find a comparable one somewhere else.
- Look beyond the internet. Try to find out if the company is registered through local, state, or government departments. [6] X Research source
- Try looking at the Better Business Bureau or through the American Society of Travel Agents.
- Don't trust anything you get in the mail, via e-mail, or through fax.
- Never give your credit card information to anyone who called you first. This could be a scam. Instead, investigate and return the call if you discover the business is legitimate.
- There are no buy one, get one free offers. These promotions are offered by resorts with the intention that the marketing company sell them for a set price. These resorts do not want you coming to their resort with a free vacation package for next year’s travel. They are trying to sell you a vacation service. This is completely against all the terms and conditions that the resort has set and should be reported to them directly.
- Many foreign scammers get US phone numbers to make consumers think they are local. You need to investigate the company you are going to buy your timeshare vacation package through before giving them any money.
- Make sure to ask for cancellation periods. Most salespeople won't tell you about your right to cancel if you sign up for a timeshare. [10] X Research source
- Don't lead a salesperson on. If you have no intention of buying, don't pretend you are more interested than you are. [11] X Research source

So, what is Timeshare?
Timeshare or Vacation Ownership is the most popular form of fractional ownership of a vacation property.
You own the timeshare condo along with other families and share the use of the property for one or two weeks out of the year.
When you own a share of a Timeshare condo, you only pay a fraction of the total cost. You share the cost of maintenance with other owners, thus taking ownership of a vacation property, way more affordable for the average family.
Popular types of Vacation Ownership or Timeshare are Fixed-Weeks, Floating-Weeks, and the Points System.
The Timeshare Tour Seminar / Sales Presentation
During your stay at the resort of your choice, you will be invited to attend an informative preview presentation or Timeshare seminar of the resort's Vacation Club, lasting an average of 90 minutes to 2 hours.
The presentation is conducted on a one-on-one basis, meaning that one representative will be assigned to show you and your family the benefits of the program.
A complimentary breakfast is provided on the day of the tour. Should you decided to purchase a Timeshare condo, financing is provided by the resorts, and most resorts include a purchase incentive.

Are Millennials the Happiest Timeshare Owners?
ARDA + Skift
April 10th, 2024 at 10:00 AM EDT
Travel remains a top spending priority among younger travelers. We spoke with two millennial travelers to unpack the benefits of vacation ownership and learn why they consider timeshare the best way to enjoy multiple resort vacations a year.
This sponsored content was created in collaboration with a Skift partner.
With economic conditions poised to support further consumer spending in the travel sector, travel brands are paying attention to the motivations and preferences of younger travelers. It’s not just about catering to a specific demographic — it’s about staying relevant in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
A recent Skift Research survey shows that millennial and Gen Z travelers value flexible travel planning, unique experiences, and accessible destinations. Part of a rising middle class, these younger travelers prioritize travel spending, with 82 percent of millennials and 75 percent of Gen Z taking two or more trips in the past year.
As they look for cost-effective ways to vacation regularly, many of these younger travelers are gravitating toward timeshare ownership. In fact, according to ARDA, the trade association for the vacation ownership industry, the average timeshare owner is 39 years old, and 57 percent of timeshare owners are either millennials or Gen Z.
For this passionate group of travelers, the appeal of timeshare is that their vacation is scheduled upfront and already paid for by the time they travel, not to mention that the product provides flexible options to travel more frequently and access a variety of destinations and unique experiences.
To learn more about what’s driving younger travelers to timeshare, SkiftX spoke with two millennial travelers: Raeanne Villongco, 28, a remote worker who became a timeshare owner with Hilton Grand Vacations at the age of 25 so she could travel more frequently and stay in high-quality accommodations at a lower cost; and Kristi Dosh, 42, who travels with her husband and found timeshare at Breckenridge Grand Vacations to be a good fit for their lifestyle as freelance journalists (Dosh writes about her vacation ownership experiences in her blog ).
An Affordable Way to Travel Frequently
“Hawaii is my happy place, but the hotels there are super expensive,” said Villongco, who learned about vacation ownership from her parents’ experience with Marriott Vacations Worldwide. “Because I work remotely, I want to stay for longer than a week when I travel, and it ends up being a lot cheaper using my points with Hilton Grand Vacations. It’s a great way to spend time with my friends.”
Because Villongco utilizes off-season travel windows, she’s able to maximize her ownership, taking two trips a year for about a month at a time. Hilton Grand Vacations provides their members with two options to book: with points or out of pocket through their open-season period. Often, the open season period allows her to book a larger suite with two beds and a pullout couch so she can invite friends and they can split the cost.
The idea of paying less to travel more frequently also motivated Florida-based Dosh and her husband to explore timeshare.
“We spent several years trying to buy a condo in Breckenridge, Colorado, but got priced out of the market,” Dosh said. “We both thought there was zero chance we’d buy a timeshare, but now we think it’s one of the best things we ever did. Timeshare offered us a solution where we could spend more time in Breckenridge without becoming full owners of something we couldn’t afford once the market went up.”
As Dosh attests, the value of owning a timeshare is that owners secure vacation costs at current prices, protecting against future price increases due to inflation. Moreover, timeshare suites provide more spacious accommodations compared to traditional hotel rooms, featuring amenities such as separate living and dining spaces, multiple bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and an in-suite washer and dryer.
Flexible Options Aligned With Travel Preferences
Dosh and her husband appreciate the flexibility of their ownership as they don’t have to stick to a specific week and can pick up extra time through Interval, a timeshare exchange platform.
“Learning how to maximize our ownership through Interval International has been key to our positive timeshare experience,” Dosh said. “I don’t think we would have bought if we were tied down to a fixed week.”
Timeshare exchange platforms like Interval International (II) and RCI enable owners to trade their allotted timeshare weeks at their home properties for stays at different resorts worldwide within their networks or convert their weeks into points that can be split up and used for multiple trips.
“Our Breckenridge timeshare is valuable because it offers ski-in and ski-out access,” Dosh said. “We’ve used Interval to stay in all kinds of places all over the country, and we’re planning to use it to book a stay in Nice, France, to celebrate our wedding anniversary.”
A Range of Unique Experiences
Research supports the idea that younger travelers prioritize experiences over material possessions. According to the 2023 Global Travel Trends Report by American Express Travel, 84 percent of Gen Z and millennial respondents preferred indulging in a dream vacation rather than acquiring a new luxury item. When it comes to vacation ownership, the adventure is often happening right on property.
For Villongco, the ability to participate in a “bunch of activities” at Lagoon Tower, a Hilton Grand Vacations Club overlooking Waikiki Beach, is priceless.
“I love taking hula classes, doing morning yoga, and enjoying water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding,” Villongco said. “Some people want to relax while on vacation, but I like being active and adventurous. Even if I want a chill day at the hotel, I can still do something active with Hilton Grand Vacations’ experiences.”
She also appreciates Hilton Grand Vacations’ off-property restaurant discounts, provided upon check-in: “A lot of them are nice restaurants, some of my favorites in Waikiki. Many other hotels offer restaurant discounts only within the hotel property, so it’s nice to venture out and get a discount elsewhere.”
Looking Ahead
As millennial and Gen Z travelers, characterized by their quest for unique experiences, flexibility, and value for money, seek to travel in a way that aligns with their lifestyle and budget constraints, the timeshare market has adapted accordingly, promising a future of travel that is as adventurous as it is attainable.
“My husband and I have joked that if we didn’t have a house and wanted to travel full time, we could live as digital nomads in different timeshares pretty affordably,” Dosh said. “It’s nice to know that dream is attainable if we want it.”

15 Ways To Decide If Timeshares Are Really Worth The Investment
Posted: March 10, 2024 | Last updated: March 10, 2024
The idea of owning a piece of paradise and enjoying yearly vacations at a luxurious resort can be enticing. This dream is often packaged in the form of timeshares, but a critical question lingers: are timeshares a smart investment, or do they end up being a financial letdown?
What is a Timeshare?
A timeshare is a shared ownership model where multiple individuals jointly own a vacation property, usually a resort condo. Owners get the right to use the property for a specific period each year, often divided into weeks. The aim is to offer a budget-friendly way to enjoy vacation properties without the full financial burden of sole ownership.
Where are Common Timeshares?
Timeshares are widespread in popular vacation destinations worldwide, including beach resorts, mountain retreats, and city centers. Leading timeshare companies manage properties in sought-after locations such as Orlando, Las Vegas, the Caribbean, and Europe. These destinations aim to attract vacationers with the prospect of consistent luxury experiences.
How do People Get into Timeshares?
Getting into timeshares often involves attending sales presentations or responding to online promotions offering a “free” vacation in exchange for sitting through a presentation. These events emphasize the perks of timeshare ownership, highlighting potential savings compared to traditional vacations. The allure of exclusive resort amenities and the promise of stress-free getaways can convince individuals to commit to a timeshare.
Pros of Timeshares
Investing in a timeshare promises a gateway to luxurious vacations, offering owners a consistent and exclusive escape. Let’s look at the positive aspects that make timeshares appealing for those seeking a predictable and delightful vacation experience.
Vacation Consistency
The primary allure of timeshares is the assurance of consistent vacations at a preferred destination. By securing specific weeks or seasons, owners eliminate the annual hassle of finding accommodations, ensuring a stress-free getaway.
Amenities and Luxury
Timeshare properties often boast extravagant amenities such as spas, golf courses, and exclusive beach access. Owners love having these perks without the burden of year-round maintenance or the hefty costs associated with sole ownership.
Potential Cost Savings
While the initial investment can be significant, timeshare owners may discover cost savings over time. The dedicated vacation property eliminates the need for hotel bookings, and fixed maintenance fees contribute to predictable budgeting.
Exchange Programs
Many timeshare programs offer exchange options, allowing owners to trade their weeks with others in different locations. This flexibility broadens vacation possibilities, providing a diverse range of travel experiences.
Investment Potential
In specific cases, timeshares may appreciate in value, especially when they are in popular and developing areas. This potential investment aspect adds a financial upside for owners.
Cons of Timeshares
While timeshares offer a consistent retreat, certain drawbacks may give potential buyers pause. Here are some challenges associated with timeshares, considering factors like upfront costs, limited flexibility, and potential difficulties in resale.
Upfront and Maintenance Costs
The upfront cost of purchasing a timeshare can be a deterrent, coupled with annual maintenance fees. These fees, regardless of usage, accumulate over time, contributing to the overall expense of ownership.
Limited Flexibility
Despite the promise of consistent vacations, timeshare owners face limitations in flexibility. Altering plans on short notice can be challenging, and unused weeks may go to waste without the option to exchange or rent.
Resale Challenges
Reselling a timeshare can be complicated, often resulting in owners not recouping their initial investment. The resale market’s saturation makes finding buyers a complex task, impacting the potential return on investment.
Commitment and Contractual Obligations
Long-term commitments and stringent contracts accompany timeshare ownership. Breaking these agreements can be complicated and costly, posing challenges if financial circumstances change.
Potential for Undesirable Locations
The location of a timeshare property plays a crucial role, but buyers may find that available weeks or seasons are less desirable, leading to a potentially less satisfying ownership experience.
Operational Changes
Timeshare properties may change management or operational models, affecting the overall experience for owners. These changes, beyond owners’ control, may impact the quality of the vacation property over time.
Are Timeshares a Waste of Money?
The question of whether timeshares are worth the money is subjective and depends on individual preferences and experiences. Although timeshares promise yearly vacations and exclusive amenities, their financial structure often includes upfront costs, annual maintenance fees, and potential special assessments. The overall expense of a timeshare, including the opportunity cost of forgoing other vacation options, might outweigh the benefits.
Can You Get Out of Timeshares?
Exiting a timeshare can be tricky due to binding agreements in ownership contracts. However, there are options for those looking for an exit. These include selling the timeshare on the resale market, consulting exit companies specialized in timeshare cancellations, or negotiating with timeshare management for a potential exit strategy. Each option comes with its own set of challenges and considerations.
When it comes to travel and vacations, timeshares present a distinctive approach to securing yearly getaways. While some find joy and value in their timeshare ownership, others may view it as a financial burden or a constraint on their vacation choices. Investing in a timeshare requires careful consideration, weighing benefits against costs and potential limitations. Understanding the details of timeshare contracts, exploring alternatives, and making informed decisions is vital for those contemplating this investment. Whether timeshares are a waste of money depends on an individual’s expectations, preferences, and financial circumstances.

A vacation nightmare: Why is it that timeshares attract so many scammers?
Timeshares are so easy to buy, so difficult to sell and so susceptible to swindlers..
By Virginia Hammerle
6:00 AM on Apr 14, 2024 CDT
For more than a decade, employees of a violent Mexican cartel, posing as sales representatives, have contacted timeshare owners and offered to buy their timeshares back for a princely sum. They persuade the owners to wire large sums to Mexico for upfront fees for listing advertisements, government fines and other bogus costs.
Then, of course, they clean out the victims’ bank accounts.
The scheme is enormous. The cartel has dozens of call centers and has netted hundreds of millions of dollars. Its target is older, retired American and Canadian owners who want to liquidate their timeshares, so they have money to leave to their family.
Sound familiar? Timeshares are so easy to buy, so difficult to sell and so susceptible to swindlers.

A timeshare is an agreement that allows multiple owners to share the right to use a property. Usually, a timeshare interest gives the owner the right to use the property during a a specific week of the year.
Timeshare interests can be confusing. Sometimes they are a deeded interest in the timeshare property. Other times they are merely a contractual right to use the property.
If the timeshare is a deeded interest, then it is considered real property. That means that if the timeshare property is located in another state, then it is subject to that state’s laws. If you live in Texas and own a timeshare property located in another state, then we may need to do an ancillary probate in that other state when you die. Your options to dispose of the interest outside of probate are determined by the law of that state.
If the timeshare is merely a contractual right, then it is considered personal property. The contract will usually address what state’s law applies to the contract.
Timeshares are burdened by monthly or annual fees that must be paid. For that reason, a lot of people who inherit timeshare interests are not happy. The last thing they want is an obligation to pay thousands of dollars annually in exchange for a right to vacation in a place they did not choose. That, of course, is on top of the expense of traveling to the timeshare property and trying to get time off that matches with the availability of the timeshare unit.
Aside from your beneficiary’s unhappiness after your die, a timeshare can become burdensome for you during your own lifetime. The associated costs do not stop just because you are ill or incapacitated. The deadlines for reserving your vacation weeks ahead can become difficult to manage. The timeshare companies are usually reluctant to deal with your agent under a durable power of attorney.
If you are using a revocable management trust in your estate planning, then you may be able to have a deed or assignment prepared which would transfer the timeshare to the name of the revocable trust during your lifetime. Or perhaps not – there may be a restriction in your timeshare contract.
However, timeshares are notoriously difficult to get rid of, and if you do manage to sell the timeshare, often it will be at a fraction of the price and at a loss.
