5 Days - Angkor Family Bicycle Tour
This is our first family trip to Cambodia. There were just four of us, through the Temples of Angkor Wat, departing by bike from Siem Reap through the off-beaten trails with Mr. Sokvuth (our guide). We highly recommend doing this tour with him and Mr. Sokvuth was not only a knowledgeable guide but had a great friendly personality that relaxed my whole group of 4. This is an incredible cycling experience to visit with a company that is worth the money.
Cambodia Intro
The tour was amazing! Learned and experienced some incredible things. The tour leader, Becca, was super friendly and helpful and became more of a friend than a leader. She spent time with everyone and we always had a laugh. I hope you never change Becca!

Angkor Sightseeing Package Tour for Family with Ancient Temples
Brilliant trip! We have just returned from a 5-day tour package taking you from Siem Reap and end in Tonle Sap Lake organised by DNQ Travel, and can only echo what previous reviewers have said. It was probably the best-organised trip we have ever made, despite there being so any elements to the holiday where things could have so easily gone wrong, but everything went like clockwork. You got a wonderful overview of Cambodia in such a short time and the hotels were excellent. All in all, a great holiday, and we would have no hesitation in recommending DNQTravel.

Angkor Wat: Guide to the Small Circuit Tour
The Small Circuit Tour of the Angkor Archaeological Park hits the three major highlights – Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm. These three are the primary temples on the tour bus route and are incredibly crowded from the time that they open until the time they close. But they are the most popular for good reason, these temples are absolutely stunning!
Read on to learn all about the temples that are included in the Small Circuit Tour, and be sure to check out all that is included in the Grand Circuit Tour if you have some additional time in Siem Reap .

Angkor Wat Small Circuit Tour Route
The Small Circuit Tour route generally starts with sunrise at Angkor Wat and continues clockwise. This tour is a must if you only have one day to spend in the Angkor Archaeological Park as it covers the most popular and picturesque temples.
If you’d like to make any modifications to your tour route, be sure to hire a tuk-tuk driver who speaks English. Negotiate the changes and the price ahead of time so that there are no surprises for either of you.
The Best Tuk-tuk Driver in Siem Reap
After several trips to Siem Reap we have worked with quite a few local drivers and our favorite Siem Reap tuk-tuk driver is Nakry Mean who drives a batmobile-themed tuk-tuk. You can reach him on WhatsApp at +855 17 761 110 or on his Facebook page, Siem Reap Batmobile Tuk Tuk .
Angkor Wat is the crown jewel of the entire Angkor Archaeological Park and is still used for religious purposes to this day. It is not uncommon to see monks here, often offering blessings for a small donation. The temple appears on the Cambodian flag and is the main tourist draw to the country.
This temple was built in the first half of the 12th century by King Suryavarman II and it is estimated that it took 30 years to complete. He meant for the temple to be his eventual mausoleum and dedicated the building to Vishnu.
The most spectacular view of Angkor Wat is from across the pond at the main entrance. This is where crowds gather every morning for sunrise. The symmetrical temple reflects in the calm water at it’s base to create a beautiful photograph.
Once inside you can wander around temple or the grounds. You can also climb the steep set of stairs to the temple in the center of the complex. There is usually a queue to get in as the number of people that are allowed at a time is restricted. This area does not open until 6:40 am and it is one of the few areas in the park where the conservative dress code is enforced.
Opening Hours: 5 am – 5:30 pm
Phnom Bakheng
It’s a bit of a climb to get up to the top of the hill where Phnom Bakheng overlooks the park below. It’s about a 15-minute uphill walk on a dusty path to the top. The temple is undergoing a lot of construction so it’s difficult to get a photo without a giant crane in the background.
The main temple itself is fairly small and sits in the middle of a platform. Smaller pagodas sit in the corners. Most people choose to visit Phnom Bakheng for sunrise or sunset because of it’s setting high on a hill with a view of the jungle below.
Sunset is by far the most popular time to visit Phnom Bakheng. If you have a camera with a zoom lens, you can see Angkor Wat far in the distance. The temple turns a beautiful shade of gold when the sun is setting. However, only 300 people are allowed in the temple at a time so if you don’t arrive about three hours before sunset, you’ll have to wait in line.
While Phenom Bakheng is along the Small Circuit Route most tourist skip it. So if you really want to visit, be sure to tell your tuk-tuk driver ahead of time.
Opening Hours: 5 am – 7 pm
Bayon Temple
Bayon is one of the most impressive temples in the entire Angkor Archaeological Park. It’s the second of the “Big Three” that you’ll visit on the Small Circuit Tour (Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm). Bayon sits at the center of the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom (which translates to “great city”). Be sure to stop at the gates when you enter and exit this city as they are quite impressive!
As you approach this massive Gothic-style temple, you’ll notice that you keep seeing one particular face smirking down at you. There are 216 faces of either the former king, Jayavarman VII, or the face of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokitesvara. Historians have differing opinions.
Head up to the rooftop of this temple and you’ll see huge, well-preserved faces – some close enough to touch while others loom far above you. It’s quite spectacular to see and you’ll want to spend a while up here snapping photos. There are a few entrepreneurial locals here who may offer to take your photo while making a kissing face toward one of the statues. Just be aware that they are looking for a tip.
Bayon is best to visit in the early morning, before the tour buses arrive. From 7:30 am until about 8:30 am, you’ll find far fewer tourists here as most people are still exploring Angkor Wat. Plan on spending about two hours at this temple to get the full experience.
Opening Hours: 7:30 am – 5:30 pm
Baphuon Temple
Baphuon Temple is a good one to skip if you are short on time. It’s a huge temple with a steep set of stairs leading to the top. From there, you’ll be rewarded with nice views of the area. The reason this temple is skippable is that the architecture isn’t nearly as interesting as other temples in the area. There are no intricate carvings or strangler figs wrapping around the ruins.
If you do decide to stop at Baphuon, be sure to follow the “way of visit” signs when you exit the temple. The path will lead you through an ancient stone gate, past the 10th-century Hindu pyramid of Phimeanakas and finally bring you to Prasat Preah Palilay.
This small temple has had almost no reconstruction work done on it and has several large trees growing up through the rubble. It is quite a spectacular site to behold and you’ll likely have it all to yourself as almost no tourists visit this particular temple.
Once you get back to the road, you can either follow the Terrace of the Elephants back to your tuk-tuk, or cross the road and check out a few more off-the-beaten-path temples. These are not a part of the typical tourist track so you’re unlikely to run into other tourists here.
Terrace of the Elephants
This is a long pathway that runs alongside the road near Baphuon Temple. It is a 300-meter royal terrace where the king would watch events in the parade grounds or hold audiences with the citizens of Angkor. The elephant carvings lining the sides of the terrace give it its name.
Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda
Just after you exit the east gate (known as Victory Gate) of Angkor Thom, you’ll pass Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda, a pair of small but picturesque temples with wonderfully preserved Aspara carvings.
If you’re feeling overheated and exhausted, these temples are certainly skippable. But since they are overlooked by most tourists, they make for a nice escape from the crowds you’ll experience at the other temples on the Small Circuit Tour.
You’ll need to climb a very steep set of tall, uneven stairs to reach the top of Ta Keo. You can enjoy views of the surrounding area from above. And you can step inside of the small temple at the very top to see a shrine to Buddha.
Ta Prohm is another of the most impressive temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park. The Cambodian jungle has gone to work in consuming the massive temples. Strangler figs have wrapped around the stone structures in such an impressive manner, it’s impossible not to be in awe of Mother Nature.
This temple is massive so be sure to note where your tuk-tuk drops you off. Some drop off at the temple’s main entrance and some in the back. Signs clearly mark the direction that you’ll need to go if you want to follow the flow of traffic. It’s easy to get turned around here and you’ll want to spend at least an hour as the photo possiblities are endless!
Unfortunately, the most magnificent spots in Ta Prohm, where the trees have really taken over, are roped off so photos can be difficult. While most of the temples in Angkor are a bit of a free-for-all in terms of exploring, this one has more walkways that you’ll need to stick to. The highlight from the Lara Croft Tomb Raider movie is a popular photo stop for the huge tours that descend on the temple around 9 am.
Banteay Kdei
Banteay Kdei is a beautiful temple that seems to be a bit structurally unsound. Look closely at the columns and walls here, you’ll see that many are being held together by rust-colored wire. Some areas look like they are ready to topple at any moment!
Take your time here, the carvings are really spectacular and it’s not as crowded as some of the more popular temples. The name Banteay Kdei literally translates as “a citadel of chambers” and you’ll find plenty of crumbling hallways and chambers to explore.
Finally, don’t miss the enormous tree at the back of the temple that is taking over a small retaining wall.
Just across the road from Banteay Kdei, you’ll find the massive man-made lake of Srah Srang (sometimes spelled Srassrang). It’s the perfect spot to relax for after a long, hot day of temple exploration in Angkor Wat. There is a small shop here where you can get a big bowl of cheap noodle soup and a really strong cup of coffee.
If you have any energy left, you can ask your driver for one final stop at the small temple of Prasat Kravan. If you’re feeling a bit templed-out (and if you’re anything like us, you will!), don’t feel bad about skipping it and heading straight back to town for a cold drink and a dip in your hotel pool. You’ve earned it!
We hope you enjoy the Small Circuit Tour of Angkor Wat!

- Flavorful Vietnamese cuisine relies on mint, coriander, cinnamon, ginger, lime, lemongrass, and Thai basil. Foods are cooked minimally, from lightly grilled meats to blanched vegetables. Seafood is popular, usually flavored with ginger, as are chicken, duck, and pork. Don’t miss dishes like spicy beef noodle soup and banh mi, a baguette stuffed with paté, cold cuts, and pickled vegetables.
- International influence is evident in the Khmer cuisine of Cambodia, where full flavor is created through the mix of herbs and spices such as sweet basil, Asian coriander, mint, lemongrass, and pepper. The base of almost all Cambodian dishes is rice or noodles, served with a curry, soup, or vegetable stir-fry. Grilled freshwater fish is popular, and the fermented fish paste known as prahok is a traditional seasoning.
- Traditional Thai cooking uses market-fresh ingredients seasoned with a mix of herbs, spices, and condiments such as chili peppers and fish sauce. The main staple is rice. Most meals include a soup, a curry, a steamed or fried dish, and a salad.
- Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand operate on 230 volts.
- Vietnam uses Types A, E, or F plugs with two flat pins, two round pins, or three round pins, respectively.
- Cambodia uses Types A, C, or G plugs with two flat pins, two round pins, or three flat pins, respectively.
- Thailand uses Types A, B, C, or O plugs with two flat pins, two flat and one round pin, or two or three round pins, respectively.
- We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.

- You will use the Vietnamese dong in Vietnam, Cambodian riel (or U.S. dollars) in Cambodia, and the Thai baht in Thailand.
- In Cambodia, U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, though change may be given in riel. Most hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, buses, and airlines list their prices in U.S. dollars, but small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually conducted in riel. Always carry small amounts of riel for motorcycle taxis, snacks, and other small purchases.
- Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
- We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
- You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.

"My experience with TruTravels has been one of the best travel experiences to date. I was a little concerned about having a small group - but the tour leaders have made every activity fun and engaging. I would definitely say they are friends. The organisation and local knowledge was great, they were great fun whilst remaining professional and in control. The nights out in Canggu were great, getting to meet the other tour leaders and Tru staff meeting the other tour groups is a great idea. I really cannot stress enough how much of a great trip I've had with TruTravels. From booking, to pre-tour communications, through to the last 10 days - it has been well organised, managed and delivered by amazing guides. Thanks so much to Rianna, Marta and Jonny for their enthusiasm throughout the tour, their concern for when I was sick and generally for everything they did to make this an amazing Bali Experience. Much love for the tour guides!!!I would definitely recommend a trip with TruTravels!!"

Angkor Wat Tour Selection Trips
- The distance between temples may not seem that far on paper, but the heat and lack of signposts mean that walking between temples is not a good option. Try a bus tour or renting a car and driver instead.
- A source of some confusion is that Angkor Wat is the name of both the temple complex and its most famous temple. There are far more temples to see in the area surrounding Angkor Wat temple.
- Angkor Archaeological Park covers 400 square miles and consists of countless ancient temples. Allow yourself at least two or three days to visit the area, as one day alone barely scratches the surface.
- Angkor does not offer accommodation or other tourist facilities. Visitors to the area base themselves in the town of Siem Reap, 4 miles from the temples.
- Getting up at 4am may not sound appealing, but it's worth it to take in the sunrise over the famous towers of Angkor Wat temple.
- A guidebook, or better yet, a guide, will provide a lot of information about the area, and direct you to sights you may otherwise have overlooked.

4 Tips For Visiting The Archaeological Wonder Of Angkor Wat
W hile not actually listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, must surely be the eighth. Set across 402 acres of land, this sprawling temple complex holds the Guinness World Record as the largest religious structure in the world.
I had the chance a few years back to visit this giant wonder. I spent 4 days exploring all of the ruins. Here are my tips for getting the most out of your visit to Angkor Wat.
1. Hire A Tuk-Tuk Driver
Chances are you are staying at one of the many hotels or hostels in Siem Reap proper. This will mean that you need transportation to the actual temples. Enter one of hundreds of tuk-tuks usually lined up outside of the hotels and hostels.
These drivers don’t just provide you with transportation; they are actually a wealth of knowledge about everything you will be seeing. While they cannot enter the temples with you (this is reserved for registered tour guides only, which you will find inside the entrance), they can give you the low-down on each temple during the ride there so that you are prepared with valuable information upon entering.
For about $20–$25 a day (and I’m talking full days), you will get transportation from your hotel to the entrance of the ruins. The entrance fee is separate and costs $37 for a 1-day pass and $62 for a 3-day pass (valid for 1 week). The guide will also ride you around to all the different temple areas.
You will also get a personable and knowledgeable driver who will provide a cooler with cold water and towels. (You are also free to place whatever goodies you have in the cooler for lunch and such.) Trust me, you will be grateful for these basic but necessary perks after a few hours roaming outside in the hot sun of Cambodia. That’s not to mention the relief of the shade from the roof of the tuk-tuk on the ride between temples.
Pro Tips: If you would like a guide to be with you as you roam the grounds, plenty will be waiting for you at the entrance after you’ve paid your fee. These usually cost between $40 and $50. This is usually per group, not per person. Alternatively, you could opt to buy or download a guided tour on your phone to listen to as you explore the ruins. However, given the size of the grounds, this can get confusing and hard to follow after a while.
2. Consider How Many Days You Want To Spend Exploring
The number of days you decide to spend visiting the temples at Angkor Wat will surely depend on the amount of time you have in the country, so this will be an entirely personal decision. Most people seem to recommend at least 3 days and I would too. I would actually recommend 4 days, if you can, to ensure you see all of the top sites.
However, if you only have 1 day to visit, your tuk-tuk driver will likely tour you around what is known as the “small loop” or “small circuit.” This route will take you to the three major highlights of the grounds — Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm. They are highlights for good reason as they are truly spectacular and will give you a sense of the wonder.
If you have longer than 1 day, your driver will likely take you on the grand circuit. This includes the three temples on the small circuit as well as many of the smaller temples outside the central cluster. With 3 days, you will also have time to do a sunset or sunrise visit, or both.
3. Sunset And Sunrise At The Temples
One of the biggest advantages of spending more than 1 day at the site is that you can include a day in which you get to see either the sunrise or sunset at the temples. This is a very popular thing to do, so be aware that you will definitely not be the only one there.
If you want great pictures, plan to be there well ahead of time to stake your spot. Then be prepared for latecomers to budge their way in; such is the way of tourists these days.
If you hope to go for sunrise, the park entrance opens at 5 a.m. This means, depending on the location of your hotel, you will want to leave at about 4:45 a.m. Your tuk-tuk driver will be able to help you determine this.
The best spot to view the sunrise is at the reflection pool located right in front of the main temple. This reflection allows for some spectacular pictures of the Sun rising in the water with the temple in the background. Be sure to walk around and get pictures from several angles.
If you’re hoping to go for a sunset, the most popular spot to do this is at the temple of Phnom Bakheng. This temple is located on top of a hill allowing for a spectacular view. Be sure to check times of sunrise and sunset to ensure you are there with plenty of time to catch either.
4. The Dinosaur
Maybe you’ve heard of it, or maybe, like me, you hadn’t. On my travels, I overheard someone else’s guide talking about it and then wandered around to find it. Either way, now you know.
If you’d like to see this dinosaur — a stegosaurus to be precise — you will need to visit the temple of Ta Prohm. This temple was made famous when the movie Tomb Raider hit theaters. Parts of the adventure movie are filmed in it. And while this may be the reason many tourists visit this temple, do not forget to also look for the tiny dinosaur carved into a temple wall.
The carving is located in a corner of the courtyard. You must look to the left of the central exit. Once you find it, create your own theories as to how a dinosaur was carved into a temple nearly 900 years old.
Regardless of how many days you have to spend in the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Angkor Wat, you are sure to enjoy your time if you keep these tips in mind. As well, be sure to wear good walking shoes; light clothes that cover your arms, shoulders, and knees; perhaps a hat; sunglasses; and sunscreen. Enjoy it and take all the pictures you can!
