Best Travel Vloggers and YouTubers to Follow in 2024

Best Travel Vloggers and YouTubers to Follow in 2024

As a travel vlogger myself, I may be biased but I think that travel vloggers provide a captivating insight into the world of travel and adventure. You can explore destinations from the comfort of your sofa and get endlessly inspired for your next trips.

The visual storytelling that video content allows for is perfect for travel. I think it’s an amazing way to discover new and unique perspectives on travel.

Travel videos resonate with aspiring adventurers in a way that can be difficult with written content.

Plus, it’s a great way of getting to know a creator and the face behind a travel blog . I love that travel vlogs provide a more personal approach that combines an informative experience with wonderful creativity.

To help you discover the best travel content out there, I have compiled a list of the top travel vloggers and YouTubers for the most engaging travel video content.

I’ve included sections on solo female travellers, family travel vloggers, British travel vloggers, and travel couples.

From personality-led travel vlogs to stunning cinematic masterpieces, here is my pick of the best travel vloggers and YouTubers to follow in 2024.

Author Bio: Jessie Moore

Jessie Moore is a luxury travel expert with years of experience travelling the world to find the best destinations, hotels and adventures.

Top travel vloggers

Fearless and far.

Mike Corey is the man behind adventure travel vlog, Fearless and Far . I love that he journeys to weird and wonderful destinations, which are far away from the mainstream.

It is a wonderfully creative vlog that encourages people to face their fears to travel the world.

Mike approaches travel and life as an extreme sport. The results are wild, unique, and downright crazy travel experiences. His travel vlogs are a rollercoaster of adventure and adrenaline-fuelled travel.

Drew Binsky

Drew Binsky is an American travel vlogger and Youtube documentary maker. His travel vlog has a heavy focus on discovering and celebrating the various cultures across the world.

Telling unique stories of the communities and culture behind every location, he brings his viewers daily travel videos.

In a refreshing approach to travel vlogging, Drew puts a spotlight on sociopolitical issues, including human rights, gay and transgender acceptance, and challenging racial and religious stereotypes.

He wants to bust the myth that the world is unsafe, inspiring other people to travel and widen their perspective of the world; which I think is an admirable goal.

As if that wasn’t enough, Drew often features amazing special guests on his channel too.

Nadine Sykora is a seasoned globetrotter who brings an impossibly fun and positive energy to her travel content.

I think her energy is genuinely infectious, adding an optimistic and lively dimension to travel and adventure.

It’s this approach that elevates her storytelling, inspiring young people to travel. Her videos are helpful and informative, from packing guides to handy travel hacks.

Hey Nadine is therefore a great resource for aspiring young adventurers.

Sam Kolder is a Canadian adventurer and creator of exceptional travel videos. As a seriously talented travel filmmaker, Kolder’s videos are nothing short of cinematic masterpieces.

Kold is a channel for high quality travel content, as well as some educational videos for aspiring filmmakers.

In his travel videos, you’ll discover engaging storytelling and the best transitions you’ve ever seen. Kolder is also known for his incredible drone shots and a habit for backflipping off tall structures.

Videos are few and far between but, trust me, they are always worth the wait. My favourite travel video of all time is Kold’s Hey Tim :

Lost LeBlanc

Christian LeBlanc is another Canadian adventurer. His unwavering passion for travel shines through his well executed videos on his YouTube channel, Lost LeBlanc .

He has created a dedicated community of like-minded travellers as a result. I love that LeBlanc encourages his viewers to step out of their comfort zones in the pursuit of adventure and global discovery.

He offers a lot of resources to other aspiring travel filmmakers and photographers, teaching both the creative and business side of the travel vlogging sphere.

Formerly known as Migrationology, Mark Wien’s travel vlog is one for the foodies. He believes that food is the reason you should travel and believe me when I say that his dribble-worthy videos strongly support this claim!

His content combines incredible food discoveries with highly watchable travel experiences.

Mark is based in Thailand with his wife, but he frequently travels all over the world trying amazing food from various different countries and cultures.

He is constantly on the hunt for local delicacies and mouth-watering meals.

Phil Good Travel

In the Phil Good Travel vlog , Phil Calvert travels across Europe sprinkling positivity everywhere he goes. His aim is to promote solidarity between all backgrounds, races, and upbringings.

Given that black travellers are frequently the minority in Europe, Phil has set out to create a community of black travellers in this part of the world.

I love that he brings open-mindedness and optimism to his travel videos, and his enthusiasm is truly infectious.

Sorelle Amore

Sorelle is a quirky bundle of energy with a huge and infectious smile.

Her YouTube channel offers more than just travel, whether it’s home updates or ‘Advanced Selfie’ photography tips. In short, she wants to inspire confidence and creativity.

Her videos feel very authentic, with none of the superficial or forced feel that you sometimes get with other vloggers. Sorelle is constantly striving to be a better human, and tries to inspire others to do the same.

She recently moved to Iceland, so if you love Iceland content (who doesn’t!) then you’ll love some of her latest videos.

Solo female travel vloggers

Brooke saward.

A travel vlogger from Tasmania, Brooke Saward aims to inspire young people to travel more, and to feel more confident travelling solo.

Brooke documents her travels on her YouTube channel in a way that feels authentic and accessible. A popular blogger, vlogger, author, and adventurer.

Eva zu Beck

Eva zu Beck is an adventure traveller and solo female explorer. On her YouTube channel Eva explores less visited destinations which are not commonly seen in mainstream travel media.

Whether it’s visiting Aleppo and Damascus in Syria, hiking the K2 base camp in Pakistan, or trekking alone through Mongolia.

Eva aims to tell the stories of those people, communities, and cultures that you don’t normally see or have access to. She encourages people to push themselves out of their comfort zones.

A truly inspiring solo female traveller and one of my personal favourites.

I Am Aileen

Aileen Adalid is a travel vlogger from the Philippines. She did what many of us dream of doing: she quit her corporate job at 21 to travel the world.

Aileen shows her viewers how to travel the world as a digital nomad, inspiring her community of travel dreamers to do the same.

On her channel, I Am Aileen , you’ll find beautiful travel videos which are packed full of tips and tricks. I love that she also shows you how to live a sustainable travel lifestyle.

Jennelle Eliana

Known as the woman who lives in a van with her pet snake, Jennelle Eliana’s YouTube channel exploded within a matter of weeks. Her travel vlog has a light-hearted feel with a strong focus on sustainability.

All her videos are shot and edited on her iPhone. I think hte lower production values of her videos provide a more authentic portrayal of van life.

She addresses the less glamorous sides of travel and I love that it doesn’t feel as curated or manufactured.

Oneika the Traveller

A thrill-seeker and travel junkie, Oneika Raymond is dedicated to inspiring people of colour to travel the world and live outside of their comfort zone. She inspires through education and engaging storytelling.

Oneika is not just a successful travel vlogger. She is also an award-winning writer, journalist, and keynote speaker – having spoken at the Women in Travel Summit and Women’s Travel Fest.

Pocket Wanderings

Okay this is a shameless self-promotion but it would be remiss of me not to include my own YouTube channel in this list!

I’m still relatively new to travel blogging but I’m hoping to grow my YouTube community moving forwards. On my channel you’ll find solo travel tips, luxury travel inspiration and hotel reviews.

Family travel vloggers

The bucket list family.

The Gee family started out when they sold everything and left home to travel around the world to become Family Travel Journalists.

The Bucket List Family travel vlog documents their many adventures and travels across the world.

They describe themselves as “just your ‘average’ family”, playing on the fact that most people wouldn’t consider their adventure-fuelled family life to be ‘average’ at all.

I’m sure that the Gee family will certainly make you question whether settling down is the best way to approach family life!

Hopscotch the Globe

Hopscotch the Globe is run by travel couple, Kristen and Siya. Until recently, they would have fallen into the travel couple section – but now they have a daughter and a dog, they are fully fledged family adventurers.

Their aim is to inspire couples and families to travel more. The couple share travel tips, destination guides, food adventures, and tiny home living on their channel.

I find their videos to be funny, entertaining, and genuinely helpful.

Wolter’s World

The Wolter’s World channel is a great destination for honest travel advice. It comprises a family of four who have lived, studied, worked, and travelled across the world.

Wolter addresses the best and the worst parts of travelling to help his viewers be better prepared.

In sharing honest perspectives, Wolter provides helpful insights into the culture and people of the places he visits.

He has a preference for showing this more realistic side of travel – rather than fancy drone shots and backflips of cliffs. There are new videos every Wednesday and Saturday.

The Makepeace family consists of Caz, Craig, Kalyra, and Savannah. They are on a mission to prove that travel does not have to stop after children.

They have travelled the world nomadically since 1997, so trust me when I say that these guys really know what they’re talking about.

Having travelled solo, as a couple, as expats, as digital nomads, in an RV, and as a family, they bring multiple viewpoints to the travel experience.

Their videos help fellow travel lovers unplug from the chaos, travel more, and create better memories – all with kids in tow.

British travel vloggers

Fun for louis.

Louis Cole is a popular British travel vlogger, recognised by his signature dreadlocks.

He’s also partial to a backflip in wonderful and remote locations. The Fun For Louis channel brings upbeat and charismatic video content.

Louis is a non-stop adventurer, creating daily vlogs – so there is a lot of content to get stuck into. You’ll find a whole variety of creative content and fun adventures on Louis’ travel vlog.

It’s exciting, entertaining, and engaging.

Mr Ben Brown

A talented photographer and filmmaker, Ben Brown documents his travels to far-flung destinations. As a result of his engaging content, Ben has achieved wide acclaim for his YouTube content.

Ben is also a professional athlete, as a two-time world champion kayaker. He is energetic and optimistic, which I think shines through his travel content.

Psycho Traveller

Birmingham-born Aly is a digital nomad who has built an online community of fellow travel lovers. The ‘psycho part’ of Psycho Traveller comes from the fact that Aly is a Psychology graduate.

I love that Aly provides raw, honest commentary in her content, as well as helpful tips and tricks. She aims to inspire everyone – of all ages and backgrounds – to live the life they want to live.

She is also a best-selling author and public speaker.

Couple travel vloggers

The planet d.

An endearing adventure couple, Dave and Deb live by the motto ‘adventure is for everyone’. They are a refreshing change from the ‘perfect’ travel couples you see plastered all over Instagram.

The aim of Planet D is to inspire everyone to seek adventure – you don’t have to be young, fit and rich to travel.

Their videos provide valuable information and unique experiences for anyone looking to live a more adventure-fuelled life.

Sailing La Vagabonde

Sailing La Vagabonde is run by Australian couple Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu. It all started with a dream of circumnavigating the globe by sailboat – with no previous sailing experience!

Riley and Elayna share video content around their seafaring experiences, including useful information for those looking to start sailing.

They inspire others to live an alternative lifestyle and also hope to raise ocean awareness. Now they have a baby in tow, so there’s a new and exciting dimension to their travels!

Kara and Nate

Kara and Nate are high school sweethearts who have been travelling the world full-time for five years. They started with a goal of travelling to 100 countries – which they have since achieved and surpassed!

The travel couple embark on all kinds of adventures – from hiking Everest Base Camp to taking the Trans-Siberian Railway.

You can also find a number of resources on travel hacking, YouTube, and entrepreneurship on their blog.

The Endless Adventure

Eric and Allison embody the classic story of leaving steady jobs to pursue a life of travel as digital nomads.

Their YouTube channel, The Endless Adventure , offers a tantalising combination of travel, food, and adventure – all of the best things in life!

I think this is a great channel for travel foodies, as they share some of the most mouth-watering food from around the world.

I have no doubt that Eric and Allison will inspire you to hit the road and pursue a life of adventure.

Flying the Nest

Stephen & Jess are an Australian couple with a passion for adventure. You’ll find a range of travel content on Flying the Nest , from daily life and food discoveries to volunteering and worldly travels.

The couple share a diverse range of travel experiences, from hiking Machu Picchu to overwater bungalows in the Maldives.

Their videos offer a unique historical insight and engaging video content. Plus, they now have a new baby to join their adventures.

I couldn’t possibly fit all of the amazing travel vloggers out there into this list. But these are some of my personal favourites and a great place to start if you’re feeling overwhelmed with all the travel content on YouTube.

As mentioned above, I do have my own YouTube channel ? It’s only in the early stages I’m already in the process of expanding it and any new subscribers honestly means the world.

When selecting the best travel YouTubers, we considered several factors to ensure our list included only the most inspiring and informative channels.

The best travel YouTubers should be able to transport their audience to different parts of the world and make them feel right there with them.

Information

The selected channels should provide viewers with valuable information, such as travel tips, destination guides, and cultural insights.

We looked for channels that go beyond just showing pretty footage and provide practical information that viewers can use to plan their trips.

Authenticity

We looked for channels that were authentic and genuine. The best travel YouTubers should be honest about their experiences and not just show the highlights.

We also looked for channels that showcase local cultures and communities respectfully and responsibly.

Production Quality

While production quality isn’t the most important factor, we did consider it when selecting the best travel YouTubers.

The selected channels should have good camera work, editing, and sound quality to ensure an enjoyable viewing experience.

We also looked for channels that engage with their audience and create a sense of community.

The best travel YouTubers should be responsive to comments and questions and create content that encourages viewers to interact with them and each other.

Considering these criteria, we created a list of the best travel YouTubers who inspire, inform, and connect with their audience.

How the best travel vloggers were chosen:

Like all lists, people will wonder why they’re not on it. I’m positive I missed some good ones, but this is very loose criteria I’d be using if I were hired to cast, produce or pitch a TV show. Creators did not need to meet all criteria, but most. – Programming: Weekly dedication, quality, storytelling & individual style execution – Audience: Niche, loyalty, & YouTube friendly – Blog worthy and/or binge worthy – Does it bring a new spin to the term “travel video” or “travel show” – Channel Personality/Talent: brand recognition, hosting & entertainment value

The Best Travel Vloggers on YouTube in 2022

If you’re anything like me, your YouTube home feed includes a lot of travel stories, with food and travel vloggers, around the world explorers, van life channels, and outdoor adventurers.

Watching travel videos helps me decide where to travel next in the world, and what exactly to do once I get there.

In person travel around the world is difficult with the pandemic right now, so I’ve loved watching travel adventures virtually from my favorite YouTubers. It’s a wonderful way to mentally escape the stress and uncertainty of the last year.

YouTube has more than 2 billion (yes, that’s billion with a b ) monthly logged in users. If you’re a prospective travel vlogger, getting your videos on YouTube can be as easy as filming a video, editing with a video editor , and uploading. Because getting started on YouTube can be so simple, that’s meant plenty of vloggers, with interesting stories to tell, are on the platform.

Many of my favorite vloggers introduce viewers to bucket list travel adventures around the world, while others stay closer to home.

Several travel bloggers on this list, like Kara and Nate, made the transition from around-the-word travel videos to van life during the pandemic. Others have bought and renovated isolated cabins, while others continue their adventures locally.

I enjoy watching their current adventures, but it’s also a great time to dig back in the archives and watch older videos. I even check out a few classic travel TV shows from time to time!

The Best Travel YouTube Channels

Check out some of our favorite YouTube travel channels. We think these are the some of the best travel vloggers on YouTube right now.

Kara and Nate 2.1 Million YouTube Subscribers

I just found Kara and Nate’s channel in the last year. It’s fantastic, and I wish I’d found it sooner! Kara and Nate are a husband and wife team from Nashville Tennessee, who traveled to 100 countries before travel slowed down in 2020.

The production quality of this channel is fantastic, with high quality videography, and great audio as well. These days, they’re making content driving through the USA in a van, with plenty of stops at interesting accommodations and attractions along the way.

Favorite video: We Slept Outside in Antarctica

Eamon and Bec 782K YouTube subscribers

Eamon and Bec are a Canadian couple that I started watching when they were travelling around Europe and Morocco in their self converted Sprinter van. There’s plenty of gorgeous content on here about their travels, their vegan recipes (they even have a vegan cookbook), and life on the road.

These days, Eamon and Bec are vlogging about renovating their cabin in the woods of Ontario, Canada.

Favorite travel video: How to Winter in the Canadian Wilderness

Foresty Forest 245K YouTube subscribers

Foresty Forest is the real deal, if you’re interested in bicycle touring, ascending mountains, and the great outdoors. His crockpot makes frequent appearances, with simple home cooked meals made in the van.

This is old school YouTube, without paid sponsorships, or paid reviews.

You’ll find yourself singing the insanely catchy theme song, “ Foresty Forest, he lives in a van… Foresty Forest! “

I always catch myself smiling when there’s a new Foresty Forest upload.

Favorite video: Living in a Minivan During Freezing Temperatures

Christian Schaffer – 70K subscribers

Christian makes her living as an outdoor adventure and travel photographer, and was a former Abercrombie model and retail manager.

As you’d expect, her travel videography is beautiful, but the channel is also packed full of thoughtful, intelligent tips about van life, making money, and life in general.

Favorite video: Van Life | Parking and Solo Female Safety

The Wild Card: Tom Green 267K YouTube subscribers

Bet you didn’t expect to find Tom Green on this list!

Tom is best known as a comedian, whose career started on MTV in the 1990s. He’s known for quirky and often pretty juvenile comedy like the Bum Bum Song , the Slutmobile , and Hollywood films Road Trip and Charlie’s Angels, as well as being married to Drew Barrymore in the early 2000s.

These days, Green seems a lot more introspective, as he’s vlogging his van life with his adorable dog, Charlie. Green’s still a quirky mix, with gorgeous cinematography, visits to stunning and out of the way places, musical offerings, and rambling, free-form live streams.

Favorite video: Lost Ancient City In America – Tom Green Visits Chaco Culture National Historical Park – Van Life

Slim Potatohead 129K YouTube subscribers

Slim Potatohead is something of an outlier among travel vlogs.

There’s definitely good videography and storytelling here, but this is not the vlog for you if you’re looking for fast paced, high excitement travel. Slim meanders along on his adventures, and it often seems like very little happens in a given blog. That said, he’s definitely an authentic voice that’s well worth checking out.

He travels pulling a small older trailer, spending plenty of time off grid in nature. Older videos feature the USA and Mexico, but these days he’s focusing on travel within Canada. There are videos on frugal camper renovations, camping spots, and plenty of exploring and meandering.

Favorite travel video: Latitude High: The Arctic Circle Campout

Mark Wiens 7.28 Million YouTube subscribers

Enthusiastic and energetic, Mark Wiens is a food vlogger who shares about South East Asia from his home base in Bangkok, Thailand.

I was first introduced to Mark’s Migrationology blog back in 2012, and I’ve loved following his transition to being one of YouTube’s most popular food and travel vloggers.

He features plenty of street food videos, with a strong focus on Thai food and travel.

Favorite video: Extreme Thai Street Food – CRAZY TOM YUM Late-Night Food Tour in Bangkok, Thailand!

Tyler and Todd 77K YouTube subscribers

Tyler and Todd are one of my absolute favorite channels. They’re funny, engaging, and have absolutely gorgeous videography and solid audio.

They’re a Canadian couple who travel with their adorable dogs Charlie and Eddy.

Because of the pandemic, they’re currently not traveling, but I’ve loved following along as they make a home in Nova Scotia, building an off grid cabin.

Incredibly personable and funny, they’re a treat to watch each week.

Favorite video: Gay Couple’s Routine | Living in an RV full time

Vancity Vanlife 145K YouTube subscribers

Vancity Vanlife features Chrome and his adorable bulldog pup, Cruz.

Chrome is a former professional DJ, so this is a fantastic channel if you love great music and great audio. As a former DJ, he has a fantastic voice for audio.

He uploads almost every day, and this channel is a throwback to early daily vlogs of YouTube. Videos are based mostly around Vancouver, British Columbia, but he does sojourn around Canada and into the USA when he’s able. It’s a great channel to get a feel for daily van life realities.

Favorite video: Winter Van Life In The Frosty Canadian Mountains… Is It Lonely Out Here?

Drew Binsky 2.34 Million YouTube subscribers

Drew, an American YouTuber, is definitely an engaging, entertaining presence on YouTube. He’s also controversial, as he continued traveling during the pandemic, and he’s garnered criticism for visiting countries like North Korea.

This is the type of channel that you’ll likely either love or hate.

Favorite travel video: He is the Ice Man (Wim Hof)

Project Amber 57K YouTube subscribers

Project Amber follows the adventures of a UK vlogger and his adorable Spaniel puppy, Lance as they travel in a converted ex-ambulance.

There’s plenty of great content in the archives that features road trips around the UK and Europe.

The man and dog duo just bought off-grid land in Portugal, and I’m looking forward to watching his local Portuguese adventures.

Favorite video: VAN TOUR – Ex-Ambulance Turned Offgrid Home on Wheels, with Log Burner & Upstairs Bedroom

Lost in Europe

Ash Pollard of Lost in Europe is a 27 year old photographer from Leicester/England.

As the channel title suggests, he mostly features van travel around Europe. There’s some gorgeous videography here, and I’ve loved his time in Scotland, as well has his new content on van life in the winter.

Favorite video: Winter Snow Storm Living In A Van / Arctic Van Life

Bald and Bankrupt 2.66 Million subscribers

Bald and Bankrupt follows the adventures of English travel vlogger Benjamin Rich, who mostly focuses on visiting post-Soviet states.

This channel is much more about meeting everyday people, and getting to know them and their lives, than cinematic scenes and views. It’s great entertainment, and I love that it focuses on getting to know people.

Like Drew Binsky, Rich has travelled during the pandemic. Rich was hospitalized for nine days for coronavirus in July 2020 in Serbia, which was not under lockdown at the time. He admitted that he was “blasé” about the pandemic, and has cautioned his viewers to take the pandemic seriously.

Favorite video: Inside The Belarus Chernobyl Zone

These are just some of my top picks for the best travel vlogs on YouTube channel to follow in 2022! I hope you enjoy watching their videos as much as I do.

25 Travel Vloggers to follow in 2021

  • December 30, 2020

The end of 2020 is the perfect time to start your YouTube addiction 😉 Many people can’t/won’t/don’t travel right now, and that’s totally understandable, but there’s no reason you can’t “armchair travel” through some incredible YouTube creators. That’s why I’m putting together this list of travel vloggers to follow in 2021!

About 2 years ago, we started watching travel vlogs pretty regularly…this was partly thanks to Sean convincing me to buy a smart TV for the living room which means we have access to YouTube while hanging out in the evenings. Discovering how people were creating travel content through video was the inspiration we needed to really focus on building our own travel YouTube channel — which you can check out and subscribe to.

luxury travel vloggers

If you Google articles for top travel vloggers, you’ll definitely find a few lists but I’m putting one together for a couple of reasons. One is that I want to share with you who has inspired us, and two, I want to introduce you to a few that aren’t the biggest in the business because there are smaller creators that you might vibe with. So, while there will be some big names on this list, you’re guaranteed to discover new ones!

Have your own favorites? Add them in the comments!

The Endless Adventure

luxury travel vloggers

This is our favorite travel channel on YouTube because Eric and Allison are so relatable, friendly, and travel in a similar way we do. They also go all over the world and seem to have fun with life while staying on top of their upload schedule. Obviously, 2020 threw us all for a loop and now they are renovating an RV in between local foodie adventures that usually end up in a super unique accommodation. They are just hard not to like.

Travel Beans

luxury travel vloggers

This super fun British couple are known as the Travel Beans and they love to travel and seem to take a different route on travel vlogging. Emma and Alex share all sides of the trip — good or bad. And they are happy to teach us what they’ve learned.

Kara and Nate

luxury travel vloggers

Very well-known are Kara and Nate . This couple tends to get a little controversial for, in my opinion, some silly things. While they make a lot of money from YouTube and products they’ve created thanks to their success, they are still down-to-Earth and super pleasant. They go to very interesting places and also stay in very unique accommodations.

luxury travel vloggers

I think I’ve found Cup of TJ from The Endless Adventure when they did a collaboration and, funny enough, we were all at the same conference in 2016 (I think) in London, but I wasn’t watching YouTube yet, so I didn’t know! TJ has the cutest travel and food show on YouTube…and I hired her as my YouTube coach for the spring and summer in 2020. So, I can tell you first hand that she’s amazing and her food videos always make me hungry and make me laugh!

Heart my backpack

Silva, from Heart My Backpack is an American-Norwegian who grew up in the U.S. but has lived in Norway for more than a few years now. She’s done the female solo traveler thing before it was cool, she’s been to countries that some people haven’t heard of, and, annoyingly, knows a few languages. (I say annoyingly because I not-so-secretly wish I did, too) Silva will be the first to tell you that she’s socially awkward and if you read her blog, you’ll feel her snarky storytelling shine through. Her videos make it all more fun and you get to see parts of Norway that nobody else is covering!

Deja Shu is a channel run by Shu that’s mostly food and travel with a bit of London lifestyle thrown in. I’ve met Shu and have seen her work and she’s a pro who really cares about giving you a good video that makes you want to run out the door and do what she’s doing. That’s the sign of a good vlogger!

Girl vs Globe

luxury travel vloggers

Positivity is the first thing when I think of Sabina of Girl vs Globe . She’s also just genuinely kind and that shines through in every single video. She takes responsible travel very seriously, but I’m guessing she’ll be showing us more of London soon, but until then, she’s sharing a bit of London lifestyle, as well.

Chasing a plate

luxury travel vloggers

This food-obsessed travel channel does an excellent job of sharing the best food everywhere they travel. Thomas and Sheena have great energy that you’ll feel through the screen! They’ve done collaborations with some of my favorite vloggers so they hang out with cool people 😉

Backpacking bananas

luxury travel vloggers

If you are looking to see what backpacking around the world looks like, especially as a female solo traveler, then Christianne is your woman. She has such a friendly personality that’s easy to follow when she’s on her adventures.

Eva zu Beck

luxury travel vloggers

This channel will blow your mind because Eva goes on some crazy epic adventures and makes it impossible to stop watching when you start playing one of her videos. She strives to show you places you won’t see in the mass media and is a true adventurer.

luxury travel vloggers

Mark is the king of food travel videos and his YouTube channel was one of our early favorites. You’ll mostly find him in Asia since he and his wife live in Bangkok, but there are lots of videos from all over to get you drooling.

Delightful travelers

luxury travel vloggers

Anna and Trevor are a couple of Canadians who love to travel the world — whether it’s through budget travel or splurging on some luxury. I appreciate this balance because sometimes we want to splurge and sometimes we are more frugal so we can splurge in other ways. And it’s always nice to watch people who travel similar to us.

The Wandering Quinn

luxury travel vloggers

The wonderful Ellie creates travel videos from all over the world and her bubbly, but real, personality is fun to watch. She even travels to some places you may not have thought of visiting, but she’ll show you what you’re missing!

Roaming Required

luxury travel vloggers

For anyone looking for some informative travel content, London residents Roma and Russ from Roaming Required have got you covered! The love sharing history, food, and travel tips from anywhere they travel and I can’t wait to see more videos from them.

Life by Linda

luxury travel vloggers

I love this woman’s energy! Life by Linda is all about finding adventure in adulthood and that most definitely includes travel. I really think this is a hidden gem of a travel channel that’s going to be a favorite of many just because of how fun it is!

He Goes, She Goes

luxury travel vloggers

The fun-loving couple behind the He Goes, She Goes YouTube channel are from Canada and travel all over. Their friendly and personable personality had me hooked and I think it will have you binge-watching their videos, too!

luxury travel vloggers

We can’t stop watching Kombi Life . This guy has been making YouTube videos for 8 years and his storytelling is captivating. If you’re looking for a REAL look into van-life, you should be watching this channel. But it’s way more than that. Just watch an episode and you’ll understand. Besides, since it’s been 8 years, there’s plenty to binge 😉

The Travel Matt

luxury travel vloggers

I’m fairly certain this guy was born to be on camera. The Travel Matt is charismatic and gives travel advice and creates travel vlogs in various cities around Europe and is worth checking out!

The Average Tourist

luxury travel vloggers

Sara is absolutely charming in her travel videos on The Average Tourist and I can’t wait to see how she grows and gets even better with her filming and editing. She tends to cover North America which is great for North Americans looking for inspiration closer to home at this time.

The Daily Departure

luxury travel vloggers

This Daily Departure is run by a flight attendant named Noelle based in Chicago and has travel vlogs from all over the planet! She has such a unique perspective and opportunity to travel and I’m looking forward to seeing what she does in 2021.

Means To Travel

luxury travel vloggers

Eliz started this travel YouTube channel just before the pandemic and has been helping people prep to travel again. This is another one where I’m looking forward to seeing how the channel grows and evolves because I love her focus on meaningful travel and talking about how to have the means to travel.

Jeanie Marie

luxury travel vloggers

This native Minnesotan loves to travel and has so much energy so if you want to watch a feel-good channel, then Jeanie Marie is one to subscribe to. She currently focuses on Minnesota (which has a bunch of gems), and on her trip to Mexico. Where will she go next?

The Little Grey Box

luxury travel vloggers

You’ll notice something different about The Little Grey Box channel and that’s because Phoebe is a professional presenter on CNN and CNBC and her videographer Matt is an actual videographer. That makes this channel a bit more professional than some of the others, but you still get that travel vlog vibe with the excitement and wonder of travel.

Chase for adventure

luxury travel vloggers

This is a new-to-us channel with a super adorable couple that travels the world, is so fun to watch. Annette & Daniel are travel journalists who mostly focus on Asian destinations, but have playlists of their videos from around the world.

I’m always on the hunt to discover new channels to enjoy and I’ll share them with you, too! But if you have a favorite, please leave it in the comments so others can check them out. Please don’t forget to head over to our channel at A Wanderlust For Life for all things food & travel. Once you do, let us know you’ve joined us by leaving a comment on your favorite video that we made 😉

Wishing you joy and travels!

The Best Travel YouTube Channels In 2021

Photo of author

International travel is starting to become a reality for many weary travelers with itchy feet and an all-consuming sense of wanderlust. It’s time to dust off the backpack and get hyped for a future of travel that could potentially be mere months away for some of us.

In the meantime, you may require some re-education on travel etiquette, some inspiration, or simply some entertainment. There’s no need for a cable subscription nowadays when the content on YouTube is so eclectic.

Vloggers can gain access to unknown worlds without the need for paperwork or permission from a network. These channels represent the true freedom of travel. If these videos don’t reignite your travel bug, it may be time to hang up the backpack and start focusing on your garden.

Harry Mateman

Have you ever heard of Slow TV? It’s a genre of video content that can be enjoyed in a similar way to ambient music. You can either have the footage playing in the background while you do other stuff, or you can give it your full attention, enjoy the nuances, and be transported to another time and place.

Harry’s channel follows his travels around the world. Many of the shots have been filmed using a tripod and act like moving pictures. The videos filmed in Myanmar are particularly vivid and may make you pine for the country despite its current status.

This channel is a million miles away from the big-time travel vloggers of YouTube, where every country becomes a montage of sped-up drone shots set to familiar Lo-Fi beats with manically-smiling selfie addicts who tell you more about themselves than the country they are in. Instead, Harry gives his viewers an immediate sense of immersion and is perfect for watching at the end of a tough day to get rid of any residual anxiety.

Bald and Bankrupt

Where to start with this channel ? This Englishman is one of YouTube’s big boys (he’s almost at 3 million subscribers), but he’s not like the others. There’s none of the previously mentioned editing styles here, just a man and his camera where the core of the content is his interactions with other human beings.

Benjamin Rich has a talent for creating unique experiences for himself and the viewer, which is helped greatly by his ability to master foreign languages. It allows him to get himself out of some sticky situations (and into them) and creates moments that most vloggers simply don’t have access to when their native English is all they have.

The bulk of Ben’s channel is set in post-Soviet states (he has an obsession with Soviet history) and the Indian subcontinent. From walking the streets of a Mumbai slum to really testing the limits of dangerous travel in Mauritania , Ben will have you hooked and coming back for more.

Despite the name, this guy is not shy about travel or breaking laws to get to the types of locations he desires. Shiey enjoys urban exploration and will enter abandoned buildings, among others that he doesn’t have the legal “right” to be in. This, coupled with his train surfing, means he is a prime target for getting in trouble with the law.

Even though it may look normal in our current times Shiey has been masked up for years in order to keep his identity private. Let’s hope it helps him look less conspicuous so he can keep train surfing his way around Europe.

This is one of those channels that makes you feel smarter from just watching it. Rare Earth brings us mini-documentaries from countries around the world. Imagine if Tom Scott and Michael Palin had a baby. The channel’s description sums it up quite well:

“I fly somewhere.

I find cool stories about it, and write them down.

Then I tell them to you.

I hope you like them.”

Videos will lure you with clever anti-clickbait titles like “How Gods Die (The Collapse of Easter Island) ,” “The Town Where Gap Year Kids Went To Die,” and “Why Okinawans Live Longer Than You.” It’s a great channel to revisit when you want to digest educational stories from countries you may have forgotten about.

Another of YouTube’s travel giants (7.69 million subs and counting), Mark’s content is food food food. Aimed with the metabolism of steel, this man can eat anything and still look lean.

If you’re one of the few people on earth that isn’t bothered about food, give this one a swerve. Otherwise, stick around for a channel that will make you hungrier than a bear that just woke up from hibernation.

They say that food programs have a tough job conveying the joy of eating when the most important senses of taste and smell are impossible to emulate. But Mark does a damn good job of his mainly Asia-focused food showcase videos. Who knew watching one man eat could be so fascinating.

Mark does the same smile and “mmm” noise for every meal he eats though, it’s up to you to decide how genuine his reactions are.

This channel isn’t primarily even a travel channel. It’s a Geoguessr channel. But, you need some Tom Davies in your life. You just don’t know it yet.

Travel channels often prioritize far-flung locations and video firsts over making content that is engaging and entertaining. GeoWizard may not travel far (his videos haven’t made it out of Europe yet), but his humble view of the world and himself is refreshing. He’s an instantly likable British bloke.

As mentioned in a recent Adventure Blog article , Tom is an expert Geoguessr player and a connoisseur of traveling countries in straight lines. Tom is taking some risks akin to the aforementioned shiey, but he’s not hiding anything.

He has just started a brand new straight-line mission crossing Scotland with a new episode every Sunday. So if you’re new to the channel or an old fan who hasn’t checked in for a while, it’s the perfect time to watch his semi-legal shenanigans.

Escape To Escape

Watch these channels to get your travel bug back, 2020 is behind us and a better life just has to be on the horizon. We travel to escape the drudgery, but in the meantime, these channels will do the trick.

Hopefully these intrepid souls will have you back on that unknown road sooner than you think. If not, sit back, grab some popcorn and let them do all the hard work for you.

13 Best Couple Travel Vloggers to Watch on YouTube (2024)

' src=

Searching for more amazing travel couple youtubers like Kara and Nate? This list of the 13 best couple travel vloggers is for you!

As a travel blogger and travel lover in general, 2020 and 2021 were hard years to be stuck (mostly) at home. To compensate, I searched for other opportunities to be engrossed in travel from the safety of my couch.

One day I discovered was by watching travel vlogs on YouTube. I put together this list of the best travel vloggers I have found so you too can enjoy their videos.

Whether you are stuck at home missing travel, planning your next trip, or hoping to be inspired to book a trip, these travel YouTube channels are sure to meet your needs.

Some links on this blog are affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase through them. All opinions are my own, and I only recommend products and services I personally use and believe in. Thanks for your support!

The Best Couple Travel Vloggers

1. kara & nate.

Kara and Nate Travel Youtube

Expertise : Full Time Travel & Van Life

Video to Watch First : Antarctica Series- Specifically the Polar Plunge

Of all the fantastic travel Youtubers on this list, Kara and Nate are my absolute favorite. If you take away one thing from this article, its to go watch Kara and Nate’s channel immediately.

What began as one year of travel quickly became 5 years of full-time travel and over 2 million subscribers on YouTube.

In 2016, they began as budget travelers backpacking southeast Asia and eating tons of street food. Now, they are living van life in the United States.

In the past 5 years, they have visited 100 countries, made hundreds of vlogs, and visited all 7 continents.

I love the casual nature of Kara and Nate’s vlogs. They give you a glimpse into their relationship, the amazing destinations they visit, and the trickier parts of travel as well.

You will soon feel like friends with this adventure-loving, coffee-addicted, foodie couple.  I binged all their videos in early 2021, and I recommend you do the same!

Otherwise, be sure to check out their Antarctica series first, it is sure to blow you away.

Now, if you are already aware of Kara and Nate (or one of their 3+ million followers), keep reading for other great YouTube Travel Couples.

2. Tim & Fin

luxury travel vloggers

Expertise : Bucket List Travel

Video to Watch First : Crossing it Off Series

Tim & Fin are self-proclaimed “not influencers.” They use their successful Amazon business and location independence to travel the world and share their unfiltered experiences.

Unlike other vloggers that rely on sponsorships, Tim and Fin are able to share their honest opinions about the destinations they visit.

They create a variety of content ranging from traditional travel vlogs to long-form videos to series about adventure travel or RV travel.

Their most recent series is about crossing 50 items off their bucket list because “the world is big and life is short”.

This series got me hooked on the channel and captures activities such as skiing in the alps or wine tasting in Tuscany.

3. Dan & Chelle

luxury travel vloggers

Expertise : Full Time Travel

Video to Watch First : Croatia Series

Dan and Chelle have been one of my long-time favorite travel couples. Until recently, they only traveled a few times per year, but I always looked forward to their videos.

Starting in spring of 2022, they set out on full time travel, and to produce daily travel vlogs. They’re now back stateside but still travel often and share it on YouTube.

Their full time travel started with the adventure of hiking Kilimanjaro, then headed to European destinations such as Iceland, Portugal, and Romania.

Their vlogs are super laid-back, and their personalities are infectious. Plus, with their daily videos, you’re never short on content to catch up on.

4. The Awkward Tourists

Photo of the awkward tourists travel vlog couple

Expertise : World Travel

Video to Watch First : Anything from Europe

The Awkward Tourists YouTube channel is dedicated to helping people explore the world in a fun and unconventional way. From road trips and adventure stories to unique cultural experiences, the Awkward Tourists capture it all on video for their followers.

Each video offers viewers a glimpse into travel life abroad as well as practical tips for travelers.

Whether you’re looking for an entertaining way to learn about new places or just need a good laugh, the Awkward Tourists have something for everyone!

5. Adventures of Matt and Nat

Matt and Nat youtubers travel couple

Expertise : Travel with a Full Time (non-remote) Career

Video to Watch First : Ireland series

Matt and Nat are my newest favorite travel couple on YouTube. The way they capture their travels is very authentic and genuine.

I first started watching their 50 states series, where they visited every US state in one year.

Now, they are checking bucket-list activities off from a book of 1000 things to do before you die. I love how they always have a travel “goal” but also soak in the culture of each and every place they visit.

Cruise Couple Travel Vloggers

6. trev & chels.

trev and chels travel couple on a boat in italy

Video to Watch First : Freedom of the Seas from Puerto Rico Series

In the travel community, there are cruise lovers and haters. Some feel cruising is too fast to truly see a destination and others love the fast pace.

I fall into the latter category as a cruise lover. Trev & Chels are the same! While they aren’t full-time travel bloggers, they create amazing videos from cruises and a few other destinations.

I fell in love with Trev & Chels videos after my Royal Caribbean cruise was cancelled in 2021. They have multiple cruising series to the Caribbean and Alaska .

They also work for Royal Caribbean to create content, so it’s super interesting to see the behind the scenes of the commercial side of the business.

If you are considering cruise travel, plan to take a cruise, or are a fellow cruise enthusiast, be sure to check this amazing couple out!

7. Griff & Alyssa

Griff and Alyssa Cruise Vloggers

Video to Watch First : Harmony of the Seas Series

Griff & Alyssa are another pair of fantastic cruise vloggers. Their vlog showcases cruises on many different cruise lines including Disney, Carnival, Royal Caribbean , and Virgin.

They do a great job showcasing life on the boat and at port. As Florida residents, they also share great Disney content.

Griff and Alyssa recently had a daughter, Noa. Now they’re a great resource for traveling with a baby in addition to couple’s cruise travel.

Since Griff and Alyssa travel frequently, they never have a shortage of new and exciting vlogs. Be sure to check out their YouTube channel and become a part of their “Paradise Crew”.

8. Views and Queues

luxury travel vloggers

Video to Watch First : Norway Series

Views and Queues is a great YouTube channel for cruise lovers. They frequent both Royal Caribbean and Disney cruise line.

Their videos are typically long-form, showing their vacation day-by-day. They often stay in unique suites and offer super detailed room tours.

Both of them have full time jobs and content creation is now their main source of income. Because of this, their videos are very casual and focused on quality, relatable content, which I love!

Van Life / RV YouTube Travel Couples

9. the endless adventure.

luxury travel vloggers

Video to Watch First : Any of their “what to eat” vlogs

The Endless Adventure is a long-time full-time travel couple. They have videos traveling all around the world. Most recently, they began visiting all 50 states from their renovated RV.

It’s super fun to see them visit some of the less popular states and show off the hidden gems. These two are always joking around and feel like friends just from watching their videos.

10. Eamon & Bec

eamon and bec youtube channel logo

Video to Watch First : Their Baja Mexico series

Eamon & Bec are a vegan, Canadian couple that have been doing van life for the better part of the past decade.

On their channel, you can watch their van life series from Morocco, Mexico, the United States, and Canada. They are super fun and goofy, and infectious to watch.

Their lifestyle has changed recently, following Bec’s battle with breast cancer and their baby due in 2023. However, I still highly recommend watching their channel!

11. Ian and Ana

headshot of ian and ana

Video to watch first : Any recent upload from Europe van life

Ian and Ana are couple travel bloggers that have become known for their van life in the US and in Europe. They share destination vlogs and great couple travel tips.

They’ve also recently adopted the three cutest kittens that travel in the van with them!

I recommend watching Ian and Ana to learn about full-time van life and to see amazing bucket-list destinations around the world.

12. Kinging It

kinging it youtube profile photo

Video to Watch First : Their collab with Kara and Nate in Norway

Craig and Aimee of Kinging It are one of the most entertaining travel couples. Their content is primarily based in Europe, in their unique van and bus builds.

I recommend watching Craig and Aimee if you want a good laugh!

Disney Travel Couples

13. ordinary adventures.

ordinary adventures logo

Video to Watch First : Disney Aulani series

My favorite Disney travel creators are Ordinary Adventures. They are based in California and frequent Disneyland, but also visit other Disney parks such as Disney World or Tokyo Disney.

They also produce great cruise content on Royal Caribbean and Disney cruises.

Ordinary Adventures have created a great travel community, with inside jokes, and super relatable content. If you are planning a Disney vacation , be sure to check them out!

Summary of this Guide to the Best YouTube Travel Couples

This list of the 13 best couple travel vloggers is sure to provide you hundreds of hours of content. Whether you are looking for general travel, van life, cruising, or Disney, there’s a travel couple channel for you to follow.

Is there another channel I should check out? Comment below and let me know!

The New Luxury Traveler Isn’t Who You Think

Business travel concept. Man walking on city street with yellow suitcase cabin bag

More than a third of $239 billion luxury travel market is driven by non-millionaires. They’re young, they want to explore the world and, increasingly, they are neither American nor European.

A new crop of “aspiring luxury” travelers with net worths of under $1 million makes up more than a third of the segment. GETTY

Through the rest of this decade, demand for luxury tourism and hospitality will grow faster than any other segment, according to a new report released by McKinsey on Wednesday entitled “ The State of Tourism and Hospitality 2024 .” The study, based on a survey of over 5,000 travelers, shows how the profile of the global luxury traveler is changing.

The luxury traveler—defined by McKinsey as someone who spends at least $500 per night on accommodations—has been around for some time, but the demographics of this segment are shifting on various fronts.

Unsurprisingly, about two-thirds of the $239 billion luxury travel market is powered by the affluent class. What McKinsey defines as “ultrahigh net-worth” folks (worth more than $30 million) accounted for 15% of all luxury travel spending last year. “Very high net-worth” travelers worth between $5 million and $30 million represented 16% of the segment, and “high net-worth” travelers worth between $1 million and $5 million accounted for a full third (33%) of luxury market spending in 2023.

But the report also highlights “a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers” whose net worths are significantly leaner—between $100,000 and $1 million. Last year, 35% of spending in the segment was powered by these “aspiring luxury” travelers, who collectively spent $84 billion on luxury travel—more than any other cohort.

“It’s crucial to understand this non-millionaire segment for two reasons,” write the report’s authors. “First, it is comparatively large. Second, its forays into select prestige elements present opportunities for brands that hope to attract its enduring loyalty—especially as some of its members graduate into higher tiers of income and wealth.”

Spending on travel peaks between the ages of 40 and 50, but younger travelers are showing an increasing willingness and ability to spend at luxury levels, per the McKinsey survey. “Aspiring luxury” travelers are typically under 40. Their salaries may not be astronomical. They may not own their own homes.

So how do these younger, less affluent travelers afford champagne experiences on what used to be called a beer budget? By being willing to devote out-sized shares of their wealth on experiences. More than four in five non-millionaire luxury travelers are motivated to “explore someplace new,” according to the survey, and nearly six in 10 said they were interested in taking a “cultural or historical” trip.

In general, luxury travelers are more likely than mainstream travelers to take a specialty trip. They want novelty. Seventy-two percent of luxury travelers place importance on visiting a new destination, compared with 44% of other travelers, per the report.

The geographic source market for luxury travelers is also shifting, according to McKinsey. “Although North America is still home to the most millionaires, it could be overtaken by Asia by the mid-2030s—largely as a result of growing wealth in China,” write the report’s authors.

Spurred by the growing wealthy class in Asia, the hospitality industry is responding with a boom in hotel construction. Last year, more than 40% of the global luxury-hotel pipeline was in Asia; of those, 43% were in China.

By the end of the decade, McKinsey projects that the biggest spending cohort be high net-worth travelers worth between $1 million and $5 million, a group that will be spending $154 billion by 2030. Still, the next-biggest spending group will remain aspiring travelers, who will pour a not-so-shabby $107 billion into the luxury travel market by the end of the decade.

Updating perceptions about today’s luxury traveler

Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than for any other industry segment. This growth is being powered in part by a sharp rise in the number of individuals globally with net worths between $1 million and $30 million. But it’s also resulting from a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, many of whom are younger and increasingly willing to spend larger shares of their wealth on upscale travel options (Exhibit 1).

About the authors

This article is a collaborative effort by Caroline Tufft , Margaux Constantin , Matteo Pacca , and Ryan Mann , with Ivan Gladstone and Jasperina de Vries, representing views from McKinsey’s Travel, Logistics & Infrastructure Practice.

We dug deeper into this ongoing evolution by surveying luxury travelers (defined here as those who spend, on average, $500 or more per night on lodging) to inquire about their preferences, plans, and expectations. Our survey of more than 5,000 luxury travelers was in the field in February and March of this year. 1 Unless otherwise noted, the source for all data and projections is McKinsey State of Travel Survey, 5,061 travelers, February 27 to March 11, 2024. The respondent pool included travelers from five major, representative source markets: China, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. All respondents took at least one leisure trip in the past two years.

Findings from this survey, coupled with input from industry experts, suggest that some commonly held perceptions about luxury travelers might be due for reassessment.

Perception one: All luxury travelers are very wealthy

The image that luxury travel conjures is one of vacationers with millions of dollars to their names. In fact, 35 percent of the luxury-travel market is now composed of travelers with net worths of between $100,000 and $1 million.

Luxury means different things to travelers at different wealth levels. High-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), with assets ranging between $1 million and $5 million, tend to trust boutique travel agents, seek privacy and exclusivity, and favor exotic destinations. Very-high-net-worth individuals (VHNWIs), with assets ranging between $5 million and $30 million, are relatively more likely to book large suites to preserve intimacy and tranquility, prefer end-to-end experiences steeped in local ambiance, and may be less focused on hotel brand names. Ultrahigh-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs), with more than $30 million in assets, prefer quiet luxury with personalized service—targeting remote, private destinations, accessible via private airports or helipads, that feature tailored experiences available nowhere else.

Aspiring luxury travelers have their own set of preferences (Exhibit 2). They might splurge on special occasions, prefer visibly branded luxury, demand value for their money, and pay close attention to loyalty program points and benefits. They might be willing to spend big on individual components of their travel—such as a helicopter tour or fine-dining experience—but not on every aspect of a trip.

It’s crucial to understand this nonmillionaire segment for two reasons. First, it’s comparatively large. Second, its forays into select prestige elements present opportunities for brands that hope to attract its enduring loyalty—especially as some of its members graduate into higher tiers of income and wealth.

Aspiring luxury travelers often rely on branding to validate their sense that an experience is luxurious. Strong luxury-hospitality brands can explore creating entry-level offerings to engage with this segment. (Indeed, many luxury hotels are already targeting aspirational travelers by offering more affordable standard rooms alongside pricey ultraluxury suites.)

Existing luxury brands can also cross categories to capitalize on this segment. For instance, Bulgari entered the hotel space as part of a collaboration with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel—the luxury watchmaker is expected to have a dozen collaboration-driven properties by 2026. Elle, the global lifestyle brand, has announced it will launch two hospitality ventures: Maison Elle and Elle Hotel. And high-end shoemaker Christian Louboutin opened a boutique hotel on Portugal’s coast.

Perception two: Luxury travelers come from Europe and the United States

The geographical balance of wealth is shifting. Although North America is still home to the most millionaires, it could be overtaken by Asia by the mid-2030s—largely as a result of growing wealth in China.

The rapid growth of wealth in Asia is spurring a boom in regional hotel construction (Exhibit 3). A 2023 assessment of the global luxury-hotel pipeline found that 41 percent of hotel rooms in the pipeline are in Asia, with 43 percent of those in China. The luxury-hotel supply in Asia, both existing and in the pipeline, leans heavily toward larger properties, chains, and franchises, reflecting the industry landscape in Asia as well as a preference among Asian travelers for luxury brands they know and trust.

The chair of Shangri-La on the unique preferences of Chinese luxury travelers

Kuok Hui Kwong is chair of Shangri-La, which has more than 100 hotels in 78 destinations. McKinsey spoke with her about what Chinese luxury travelers want, the strength of the Chinese domestic tourism market, the value of catering to intergenerational travelers, and the importance of giving talent good opportunities. The following is an edited version of the conversation.

McKinsey: Shangri-La is a global group, but it’s very rooted in Asian hospitality, and it attracts many Chinese consumers. Are you seeing different behaviors for luxury travelers from China? Are they beginning to travel more domestically?

Headshot of Kuok Hui Kwong

Kuok Hui Kwong: During the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of wealthy Chinese customers who would have chosen to travel abroad instead spent three years traveling domestically. Now the borders have opened up and international travel is much easier, but I think the habit of consuming travel experiences domestically is a trend that’s here to stay. China has truly diverse tourism options, whether you want scenery or culture.

Although we serve a global luxury audience, we’re particularly strong in Asia and have a deep understanding of Chinese consumers. Chinese consumers are increasingly discerning, sophisticated, and confident. While they do buy into bigger brands, I think they’re more and more looking for products and experiences that meet their particular needs and that celebrate and reflect their cultural identity. You can see this in the choices they make as they increasingly seek domestic brands, domestic makers, and domestic stay options.

A lot of Chinese luxury travelers are looking for immersive experiences that connect with Chinese culture. They have strong preferences for Chinese food. They’re very concerned about safety and hygiene. They have payment options and ride-hailing options that they prefer. Traveling domestically solves for a lot of these issues. It’s also become much easier for travelers to reach destinations in China that were previously less accessible, with new flight networks and affordable and efficient high-speed rail connections. So we expect that domestic-experience consumption will continue to be strong.

Because it’s such a huge market, fortunes can surge based on the customer’s domestic preferences. But it also means that the market is extremely competitive. It changes very fast. And consumers’ needs are constantly evolving. It also means it’s a market that can accept and looks for a lot of innovation.

McKinsey: What sort of innovation is this discerning group of travelers looking for? What are you doing to innovate at Shangri-La?

Kuok Hui Kwong: For us at Shangri-La, we’re seeing a lot of domestic leisure trips in China that are built around school holidays—with more and more parents taking their children on holiday to experience different parts of the country. So one of the main areas we’re very focused on is the family experience. In the China context, when we talk about experience seeking, a lot of times it’s multigenerational. It’s parents with their children, or it’s grandparents and parents and children all together.

Because Chinese families are becoming smaller, their ability and willingness to spend on family experiences has gotten larger. The perception that Chinese luxury travelers only want to go overseas to buy high-end brands is no longer true. A new generation of luxury consumers wants to share experiences and quality moments with their families.

Dialing into the family experience is definitely something we’ve been working on, even before the pandemic. A lot of hotels are eyeing this market as well. We own a lot of our underlying assets. So rather than just putting a kid’s tent in a room, for example, we can create an end-to-end, integrated, holistic experience that can be delightful.

In Singapore, we launched our first family experience urban hotel in 2016, when we created a several-hundred-square-meter play zone. We repurposed two tennis courts to turn them into an outdoor splash and play water zone. And then we created a whole floor of family rooms and suites with differently themed rooms that would appeal to children. We continued this in Hong Kong and in Beijing, where we opened during the pandemic, and have plans to grow this in other destinations.

Another area where we see a lot of innovation is food and beverage. That can mean regional cuisine, menu items, concepts, design and décor of restaurants, and the pairing of food with wine or baijiu [a clear liquor], along with the use of local Chinese products and Chinese cuisine with international accents.

McKinsey: One big issue in the industry is talent retention—especially talent at the level where you have to train for not just general service but also your own brand standards and unique Asian hospitality touches. What do you do to attract and retain that talent and help them grow in the industry?

Kuok Hui Kwong: I think that has to be part of your way of doing business and your corporate culture. What I personally love about Shangri-La is that it’s in our DNA to really care for our colleagues. We really lived this during the pandemic. In most of our markets, we were the very last to consider reducing our frontline workforce, and even when we did, it was minimal. This wasn’t a decision I made on my own—this is part of our culture, which I am very proud of. It also enabled us to ramp up much quicker postpandemic.

It’s also about giving opportunities to some of our colleagues to move out of their home markets and develop their careers in a global setting. We’re one of the few Asian-headquartered companies that can afford to give a local Asian workforce global opportunities. And I think we can do even more of that going forward.

Comments and opinions expressed by interviewees are their own and do not represent or reflect the opinions, policies, or positions of McKinsey & Company or have its endorsement.

Domestic travel is consistently the largest share of travel, so luxury demand in places where HNWI and UHNWI populations are large and expanding will likely be high. Providers in these regions may want to consider how to meet the specific needs and desires of increasingly affluent populations (see sidebar “The chair of Shangri-La on the unique preferences of Chinese luxury travelers”).

Perception three: Luxury travelers are old

While baby boomers do represent a significant portion of luxury spending, 80 percent of the luxury leisure market is in fact made up of people below the age of 60 (Exhibit 4). Spending on travel peaks between the ages of 40 and 60, and younger travelers show an increasing willingness and ability to spend at luxury levels.

Based on the current shape of the market, luxury providers should look for ways to cater to a middle-aged population, which will likely include a high proportion of families with adolescent children. Luxury players might consider devising offerings that can appeal to both parents and teens. Multigenerational luxury travel involving grandparents, parents, and kids is a growing trend, and these families often prefer to book villas that offer privacy and space for large groups.

People in their 20s make up a smaller share of the luxury market, but acquiring customers in this segment is still important. Their lifetime value can be significant, given the many years of luxury travel that likely lie ahead of them. Offerings for younger populations should be tailored to their interests, which tend to cluster around social experiences, authenticity, sustainability, and digital connectedness.

Perception four: Luxury travelers all crave exotic experiences

It’s true that luxury travelers are comparatively more likely to go on exotic and adventure-focused vacations, such as yachting trips or safaris. This is unsurprising, given the higher costs of these types of outings.

However, the largest share of luxury travelers still want to do the same kinds of things that other travelers do. Sixty-five percent of them express intent to go on sunny beach vacations, and 55 percent say they’re planning to book relaxing getaways (Exhibit 5).

These travelers might not necessarily want a new kind of vacation, but they still want novelty. Seventy-two percent of luxury travelers place importance on visiting a new destination, compared with 44 percent of other travelers. Luxury travelers also travel substantially more than mass travelers—which means that unfamiliar destinations can quickly become familiar ones.

Sun and beach vacations remain the most preferred trips for luxury travelers, yet hotels in the associated locations constitute a relatively low share of luxury-hotel supply (Exhibit 6). Business travel, which skews supply toward cities, may account for some but not all of this discrepancy.

Taken together, these findings suggest that there could be opportunity to develop new luxury destinations that focus on offering traditional types of leisure or to refresh traditional destinations with revamped offerings that make them feel new even to frequent visitors. Upgrading accommodations (by, for instance, adding villas) or curating experiences (such as unique scuba dives or sailing journeys) could help lure past visitors to book another sunny beach stay.

Perception five: Luxury travelers want 24/7 digital connection

It might seem intuitive that high earners who are likely to spend much of their working time communicating via phones and laptops would demand continued connectivity while away from home. But luxury travelers who responded to our survey are two to three times more likely than mass travelers to say their main reasons for traveling are to meet new people and to disconnect from digital devices (Exhibit 7).

Small-group travel—for example, small luxury-cruise expeditions—is currently in high demand. On cruises, luxury travelers do want assurance that they will be digitally connected. But they also want to feel that they’re getting away from it all, being present in the moment, and meeting new people. Although resorts that are explicitly framed as “digital detox” destinations remain a highly niche accommodation choice, digital detoxing is an important theme both in marketing luxury lodging and in developing on-site offerings. Providers should consider finding ways to create inviting spaces for digital disconnection, such as common eating areas and shared tables.

Perception six: Luxury travelers don’t care about loyalty programs

Are luxury travelers above caring about hotel loyalty points and perks? Not quite. Sixty-eight percent of luxury travelers—compared with only 41 percent of mass travelers—say loyalty programs are an important factor when choosing accommodations.

That said, many luxury travelers look for a different kind of reward from loyalty programs. They’re less focused on accumulating points and redeeming them for free stays. They’re more attuned to the recognition that comes with being a valued loyalty customer and with the attentive service, foreknowledge of preferences, and exclusive privileges (such as access to hotel leadership) it can entail.

Luxury travelers are similarly more likely than mass travelers to care about hotel brands (77 percent versus 53 percent) and government-assigned star rankings (84 percent versus 66 percent). In general, luxury travelers want to trust that the places they choose will feature world-class aesthetics and robust amenity offerings. Brands, stars, and loyalty programs can all help communicate the reputation and perceived quality of an accommodation.

In comparing luxury travelers across regions, it’s clear that consideration of star rankings is uniformly high. But travelers from China and the United Arab Emirates are more likely than others to place a high value on brands and loyalty programs (Exhibit 8).

This finding could be influenced in part by the existing lodging supply in those countries. In China, for instance, branded hotels with loyalty programs are the dominant form of luxury accommodation. As Chinese domestic hotel supply develops—and is increasingly dominated by chains rather than independent players—it could further elevate the importance of branding and loyalty.

Perception seven: Luxury tourists are done with resorts

All-inclusive resorts—replete with buffets, standardized drinks, and family-targeted activities—may not seem as if they would appeal to luxury travelers. The truth is that luxury travelers do still turn to all-inclusives for the ease, convenience, and wide variety of instantly accessible activities they can provide. But luxury travelers want these accommodations to feature exclusive offerings and personalization.

To court luxury travelers, resorts might consider offering dedicated concierge desks willing to go the extra mile in booking unique activities and difficult-to-get reservations. Customized dining options, such as chefs willing to cook any meal on demand, can also appeal to this group. In addition, resorts might offer adventurous experiences such as scuba diving, sailing lessons, or guided hikes as part of the all-inclusive package.

Resorts should look for opportunities to use data and research to enable deeply personalized touches. This could include keeping track of dietary preferences (from stay to stay and across properties) or even inscribing guests’ nicknames on their slippers.

Perception eight: Luxury and scale don’t mix

Historically, the luxury segment and the exclusivity it entails have been associated with independently owned, landmark hotels. But there are brands that have successfully scaled luxury accommodation, and there are many elements of scale that luxury players can benefit from.

A few major brands, including Four Seasons Hotels and Mandarin Oriental Hotel, have managed to establish themselves as icons of luxury hospitality. And some groups, such as Leading Hotels of the World and Relais & Châteaux, have been able to unite a disparate set of independent and family-owned luxury hotels under a single, recognizable banner—serving as a trusted indicator of luxury quality at scale and granting smaller organizations strength in numbers.

A global footprint can ease the expansion of brands into new geographies, and it can serve as a hedge against regionally specific risks. A large luxury-hospitality brand can also broaden its focus beyond its core product, expanding across the value chain to become a more holistic experience provider—for example, the ultraluxury brand Aman has branched out into cruise expeditions and jet journeys. And finally, scale creates economies of, well, scale: with more rooms to offer, scaled brands lower their cost per room and increase their efficiency as they centralize functions such as staffing, training, technology, procurement, and operations.

Today, 70 percent of luxury-hotel properties are independent. But the supply pipeline is flipped, with chain and franchise properties accounting for 78 percent of planned hotels. New branded hotels coming online are also getting larger, in terms of total rooms. As luxury-hotel brands get bigger, they must ensure that they can still offer personalized, high-touch service. Achieving scale without sacrificing exclusivity—by, for instance, introducing luxury villas that are adjacent to a larger property—could be critical to success.

Perception nine: The traditional travel agent is dead

It’s true that inspiration for the luxury segment has become deeply tied to social networks instead of travel agents. This doesn’t mean, however, that there is no role left for travel agents to play. Luxury travelers continue to use travel agents instead of online platforms, in part because they simply want someone else to take care of the transactional booking details. Meanwhile, today’s luxury travel agents—who prefer to call themselves travel advisors—are superpowered by technology and data that enable both a personalized touch and a robust, responsive level of back-end service (see sidebar “The founder of Virtuoso on the evolution of the luxury-travel advisor”).

The founder of Virtuoso on the evolution of the luxury-travel advisor

Matthew D. Upchurch is founder, chairman, and CEO of the luxury-travel-advising network Virtuoso. McKinsey spoke with Upchurch about his definition of luxury, his sense of what today’s luxury consumers are looking for, and his view on the evolution of the luxury-travel advisor. The following is an edited version of the conversation.

McKinsey: We’ll start with a question that seems simple but isn’t—how do you define the luxury-travel segment?

Matthew Upchurch:  “Luxury” is an overused word, and not just in travel. People might try to quantify it and define it according to spending amounts. But to me, it’s more nuanced than that.

Headshot of Matthew D. Upchurch

Start with the traveler. We now have five generations of people all traveling at the same time. And each luxury traveler may have many distinct personas, which change based on their stage of life and what kind of trip they’re taking. Are they traveling in a group, with family, on a “bleisure” trip? Then there are the hotel properties. As more commoditized segments get better at things like hyperpersonalization, and their hardware and design get better, it sometimes becomes harder to differentiate them from the luxury segment. We need to look at things more holistically.

The real differentiator is how the customer feels. A luxury experience often means finding someone who will truly listen to what you want and then deliver beyond expectations. When it comes to helping a customer plan travel, good travel advisors differentiate by asking, “How do you want to feel on this trip? How do you want to feel when it’s over?” Determining this desired outcome is what helps deliver a truly modern luxury experience tailored specifically to the client.

When this happens over multiple planning cycles, the advisor becomes a specialist in you, the client. Advisors can’t possibly know every part of the world—they have a global network at their disposal for that. But having someone who specializes in you, who knows your likes and dislikes and exactly how you want to travel without you having to explain it every time you plan a trip—that’s luxury.

Perhaps, though, the simplest definition of luxury from the customer’s point of view is: “Of course I could do it myself. I don’t want to. And if I can have someone in my life who provides incredible experiences and is a fun collaborator, takes my input, has great connections, and can watch my back and do things for me, why would I want to do it myself?”

McKinsey: What kind of fundamental changes are you seeing in terms of destination picks or product picks among your luxury travelers?

Matthew Upchurch: With luxury experiential travelers, the fundamental creative tension is between the familiar and the unfamiliar. There’s often the desire to go back to places they love and have built relationships with over time—to show them to family and friends and see them through new eyes. But people want to know before they return to a familiar destination: Is there a new story happening there? I’ve been to Madrid many times in my life, so is there a new story in Madrid? Is there a new story in London? Has the destination itself transformed so that it’s familiar but still feels new?

We’re also seeing a strong desire to explore. That’s one of the reasons expedition cruising is doing incredibly well. Expedition cruising is high end, not mass, and it’s absolutely bringing new luxury travelers to cruising.

Because we’re starting to see a recurring issue with overcrowding at some destinations, we’re also seeing a lot of our sophisticated travelers increasingly taking trips during what was once called the “shoulder season.” They don’t want to be caught in an overcrowded major city in Europe in the summer, so either they’ll visit in September or October, or they’ll focus on secondary or tertiary cities instead. We’re even seeing some travelers going to Europe in November, December, and January. We call it the “cultural season.” I used to sell it by saying, “Why don’t you go there when the citizens are happy instead of annoyed with everybody that’s overwhelming their cities?”

McKinsey: You have a rich repository of feedback from your clients. If you had to give one message to luxury-accommodation providers, what would it be?

Matthew Upchurch: First, they need to get really good at being able to measure what’s not easily measurable. Because those are the things that make it luxury.

Second, focus on staff culture. It’s crucial to engage with your employees and understand them. We need to make sure the people delivering the experiences feel fulfilled. I absolutely believe that those hospitality players that really focus on their employees, their culture, their service levels—those properties where you can truly feel the presence of the general manager—are the ones that will excel.

Average daily room rates have been rising quickly. And the properties that don’t effectively focus on the experiences of both their employees and their customers will have trouble maintaining those high rates. Because lately we hear a lot of our customers saying, “I have never paid this much before. I used to pay $900 a night for a hotel in Miami, now it’s $2,000 for the same hotel, and frankly, the value isn’t there.” When price and value don’t align, it’s a huge danger for the property, and it will come back to haunt them.

McKinsey: What kind of evolution have you seen in the way luxury travelers engage with travel advisors?

Matthew Upchurch: If you go back to the middle of the 20th century, more people booked directly with the actual providers than they do today. International flights were a high-end product. Walking into Pan Am airline’s office on Fifth Avenue in 1950 was like walking into Bergdorf Goodman. There was pleasure in it. There was also very little pricing complexity because there were essentially just four fare classes—day coach, night coach, day first class, and night first class.

So why would people use a travel advisor if a lot of providers had fabulous service and there was no price complexity? They did it for the same core reasons that they do it today. One is community knowledge: travel advisors have the collective knowledge of the community that they serve. They know what’s on the minds of other high-net-worth individuals that the customer respects. Another is the value of relationships: the customer might have heard of a certain luxury property, but the travel advisor might have a personal relationship with the general manager of the property.

Things changed in the 1970s, when airfare classes got more complicated, and many travel agents made money by basically becoming human interfaces to the airline reservation systems. Things changed again in the late 1990s with the arrival of the online travel agencies like Expedia and Travelocity. The idea then was the consumer could do it themselves, and it would be cheaper than paying for the travel agent’s labor. That did cause a large exit of agents from the industry.

But the true travel advisors, who were consultative and not transactional, continued to thrive by building on community knowledge and relationships. At Virtuoso, we never believed that all the baby boomers—who invented the personal chef, personal shopper, personal everything—would suddenly start doing travel DIY.

What’s happened generally in the profession is that the successful luxury-travel advisor needs more of a right-brain attitude, asking the customer open-ended questions. In a world where there are an endless number of answers, what really impresses a well-educated, sophisticated customer isn’t that you have answers; it’s that you ask great questions. The minute you ask a question they hadn’t thought about, it stops them in their tracks.

Any good travel advisor today will add value in three separate areas: before the trip, during the trip, and after the trip. The number-one thing that high-net-worth consumers tell us differentiates a trusted travel advisor from a transactional travel agent is the quality and consistency of post-trip debriefs. That debrief is when it becomes a learning relationship.

If customers can see that those debriefs add value to the next trip, and the one after that, it makes them very “sticky.” A lot of our sophisticated travelers are planning big milestone trips three, four, or five years in advance. And a lot of our advisors are saying, “Let’s not work at one trip at a time. Let’s have a strategy.”

Why would you have a professional collaborator who helps you make a proactive, conscious plan to optimize your financial assets but not have a professional collaborator who helps you plan how to optimize your most valuable, nonrenewable asset—your free leisure time? If you lose money, you can make it back. If you lose time, you’ll never get it back. Motivating the customer to think that way can drive a huge amount of value.

Many luxury travelers now want 24/7 concierges who will maintain a relationship with them across their journeys. These travelers want the benefits of large online networks when making travel arrangements, but they also want agents who respond quickly, know their names, and understand how they like to travel. Subscription-based travel clubs that meet all these needs by giving paying members access to an exclusive, carefully curated selection of properties, activities, and agency services have become an attractive solution, especially for younger luxury travelers.

Perception ten: The luxury market has mastered wellness

The traditional image of luxury is heavy on indulgence: sumptuous dining, an atmosphere of ease, and copious opportunities to splurge. In fact, many luxury travelers are interested in a slightly different vibe. Wellness is a major, ongoing, global trend, and luxury tourists are increasingly looking for ways to put their health—both mental and physical—at the center of their travels.

Mainstream luxury providers still mostly seem to think that wellness equals spas. In fact, luxury consumers now expect a much more holistic array of offerings—including fitness classes (88 percent of our survey respondents say fitness is important on leisure trips), health-focused menus, on-site antiaging doctors, mindfulness programming, and more. Luxury travelers also want to learn about the health and wellness practices that are specific to the places they’re visiting, whether it’s a Mediterranean diet in Italy or Ayurvedic medicine in India. For these travelers, wellness means a healthy holiday they return from feeling fresher and fully rejuvenated. It doesn’t mean one massage scheduled at an odd time because of a packed travel schedule and limited spa staff.

A new crop of wellness hotels is emerging to meet the new shape of demand. For example, the SHA Wellness Clinic, which has locations in Spain and Mexico, offers programming that addresses guests’ health goals—such as longevity, detoxing, weight management, and rebalancing. Guests can book private consultations for personalized food plans and targeted brain-health treatments. In Hawaii, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a property entirely focused on transformative wellness, offering multiday retreats, custom itineraries, medical treatments, an 18,000-square-foot wellness spa, and a 10,000-square-foot fitness space.

The new generation of wellness hotels is likely just scratching the surface in terms of meeting demand volume. Luxury hotels might have a “white space” opportunity to engage with the new type of wellness traveler by making them feel that wellness is integrated into every part of a stay. Meanwhile, many hotels could likely step up their game even when it comes to traditional spa experiences. Spa booking should be easy, availability should be rampant, and flexibility should be constant if the visitor is to feel a true sense of relaxation.

The luxury-traveler population is evolving. Travel players should ensure they have a full and accurate understanding of today’s luxury traveler by critically reexamining long-standing assumptions.

Travel Guide

  • # 7 in Best Day Trips from San Francisco

San Jose has quietly gone about the business of developing and expanding to become larger in both size and population than its northern neighbor, San Francisco . This sprawling capital of Silicon Valley even skirts the misty overcast and rain that characterizes the Bay Area. On the surface, greater San Jose hosts cookie-cutter housing developments, tech company parks and commercial subdivisions that stretch along the city's main arteries. But San Jose is turning into more than just the playground of tech nerds. Look around downtown and you'll find a little character – sites like the San Jose Museum of Art  displays pieces by local artists and the Tech Museum of Innovation  features hands-on exhibits for the budding software engineer. Venues like the SAP Center (home of the San Jose Sharks) and California Theatre bring in world-class performers. And with a theme park and a trendy shopping street , California's original capital is shaping up to be fun for the whole family.
