Exploring the heart of Redding: music, art, and culture shine at First Fridays in downtown

First Fridays season is back in downtown Redding.

Friday night was the second edition of the event this year going on along Market and Yuba Street as well as other areas downtown.

As the weather is getting nicer it's a great way for people to get out and enjoy all that local businesses have to offer.

The annual event organized by Viva Downtown has been going on for two years now and it is a great way for people to experience and explore the heart of downtown with music, art, and culture like at the Art Hunger Gallery on Market Street.

"First Fridays are essential to downtown that's an opportunity to invite the community to come out and support local businesses and enjoy that part of the community,” Founder Karlo Henry said.

Henry told the Northstate’s News Tyler Van Dyke that he has seen a good turnout at the gallery since First Fridays started last month.

"I think there's an increase so far, this particular show for us is more about what's going on in the community this time around,” Henry continued, “This is the Diners and Drives art show it's in honor of Kool April Nights it opens today and it's gonna be up until the 30th."

People were not only able to view art at the gallery or experience history at the Shasta Historical Society, but they also got to take advantage of deals at several local businesses and get out and have fun, like over at the Yuba Street Block Party which is new this year, coordinator Roxanne De La Torre explained to Van Dyke.

"The idea of the Yuba Street block party came from wanting to collaborate with other small businesses in our community, to have a space where you know we can promote ourselves but also talk to other like-minded individuals who are in the same position as you are."

It included several different activities like a DJ with live music, as well as a photo booth and even a taco stand, De La Torre's goal is for it to get even bigger.

"We hope that this will be a big community event and people will come from far and say I want to go to Redding to that market, I want to go support that community and I want to go see what that community is like, De La Torre continued, “Really putting Redding on the map in terms of community and culture."

If you didn't make it out to First Fridays this time around you can catch it every first Friday of the month going forward.

There is also the ninth annual hops and shops event going on downtown on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. where you can walk, shop, and taste craft beer from local breweries.

Where to buy solar eclipse glasses near me? Some locations may still have glasses for last-minute eclipse watchers

the travel store redding ca

Today's the day when the moon's shadow will (partially) blot out the sun for millions of Floridians, and some of them may still be scrambling for eclipse glasses so they can safely look at it without frying their eyes. Where can you still find them?

You may have to call around, or do some driving. Many retail locations have been selling solar eclipse glasses this year and some places have been giving them away, but availability is "while supplies last" and that will be different for every place.

There's an eclipse today? The procrastinator's guide to viewing the solar eclipse in Florida

Where can I find eclipse glasses?

Here are some places to check. Remember, some may have sold out, and not all locations may have been carrying them. Make sure any eclipse glasses you buy are legitimate and include an ISO rating, an ISO number and an address, avoid any that say "NASA Approved," and test them before you look up .

7-Eleven, Buc-ee's, Circle K and more

You may not have to go farther than the end of your street. Many convenience stores and gas stations have been carrying eclipse glasses and may still have some in stock.

Eclipse glasses have been spotted at 7-Eleven , Circle K, and Buc-ee's locations and many individual stores may have jumped on the opportunity.

Fake eclipse glases on sale online: Are yours safe? How to test before the April solar eclipse

Big chain stores such as Walmart, Lowes

Walmart has offered a wide variety of eclipse glasses in different styles, so has Target . However, all of the glasses on their websites are shipping only which will be a little late, so check your local store for availability.

Some other places where eclipse glasses have been spotted:

  • Ace Hardware
  • Cracker Barrel

Does Publix have eclipse glasses?

No, Publix did not carry eclipse glasses this year, according to a local customer service rep.

Warby Parker, Sonic offering free eclipse glasses

Prescription eyeglasses retailer Warby Parker began handing out free eclipse glasses at their locations on April 1 so definitely call first.

Sonic Drive-in locations are offering free eclipse glasses with the purchase of their new Blackout Sonic Float.

Does Amazon offer same-day delivery of eclipse glasses?

Online stores are great for fast service, but you may want to give it a miss this time. The   American Astronomical Society (AAS) does not recommend buying eclipse glasses online due to the number of counterfeit, unsafe glasses that have hit the market this year.

Shooting the eclipse with your phone: Can I take a photo of the eclipse with my phone? Yes, but take these steps so you don't fry it

Do I need to wear solar eclipse glasses?

If you plan to look directly at the sun, yes. Even a brief glance may cause temporary or permanent damage to your eyes and eyesight.

"Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer," NASA advises . "The concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury."

How can I tell if my eclipse glasses are legitimate?

If you didn't buy your eclipse glasses directly from one of the vetted venders on the AAS list or a trusted source, check the text on the glasses for the  ISO 12312-2 standard listing and the address of the company. But these can be copied.

Don't trust any glasses that say they are NASA Approved . NASA doesn't do that.

Test your glasses first by putting them on inside and looking at a strong light source. You shouldn't be able to see anything, according to the AAS, although very bright lights may show up but would be very faint.

Go outside, put them on, and look at sunlight reflections or glance at the sun very quickly. You shouldn't see anything around you and the sun should appear to be a "sharp-edged, round disk" that's comfortably bright.

Can I watch the eclipse without looking at it?

Yes! If you don't manage to get glasses in time, there are several ways to see the eclipse that won't risk your eyes with items you probably have around the home.

Anything with a round hole in it can be held up to cast an image of the eclipse onto the ground or a sheet of white paper. Pinhole projectors, colanders, a slotted spoon, a Ritz cracker, even lacing your fingers together.

Or you can look under a tree. The sun shining through tree leaves and branches creates its own pinhole projector, casting lots of little crescent-moon shapes on the ground.

What time is the eclipse in Florida?

The eclipse will last roughly 2½ hours in Florida, starting around 1:40 p.m. EDT and ending around 4:17 EDT. The time of maximum coverage will be just before 3 p.m. EDT for most of the state.

You can find eclipse times for your ZIP code on the map below, just tap your location:

The sun begins to be obscured be the moon as...

The sun and the moon slow danced their way across the clear Southern California sky on Monday, April 8, for more than two hours performing a stunning astronomical show, complete with the requisite mood lighting and graceful movement.

From Orange County to the Inland Empire to L.A., the stars of this show didn’t go full-on ‘total’ tango, like they did across much of the United States. But for the thousands who gathered outdoors at local universities, schools, libraries, neighborhoods and parks in the region, the Great American Solar Eclipse, more of a foxtrot, was no less a show to behold.

A moment of a lifetime.

The sun and the moon were right on time, about 10:06 a.m. as they began their galactic show. The eclipse in the Southern California sky peaked around 11:12 a.m. and concluded at 12:22 p.m., at which point the moon and the sun took a bow and went back to being their normal selves.

• See photos: Total solar eclipse sweeps across North America

By then their delicate dance had darkened much of North America and left millions in awe. The eclipse’s “path of totality,” the band where the sun is completely blocked from view, cut diagonally across the continent, delighting U.S. viewers from Texas to Maine. All told, the totality passed over 13 U.S. states, and at least a partial eclipse will be visible from all 50, within eyeshot of 99% of the U.S. population.

Millions put on their special glasses, or looked through homemade pinhole cameras as things went dark across much of the U.S., and a little bit darker in Southern California, where we saw a sun nearly 50% covered by the moon.

In Southern California, that might not have been enough for some folks to notice anything at all. But the event was not lost on thousands of gazers, united by the sun-moon dance in the sky.

“It just felt like something you should witness at least once in your life,” said Madeleine Lees, a high school senior and a leader of Pasadena High School’s Astronomy Club, which gathered under the open sky at the district’s Center for Independent Study to experience the celestial phenomenon firsthand.

• Also see: Solar Eclipse 2024: What the total eclipse looked like across North America

Lees was busy explaining the phenomenon to younger students. Some children likened the eclipse to Pac-Man, while others saw it as resembling an orange moon.

“I was asking if they had questions, and one of them was like, ‘why is this happening,’ and I was trying to explain the orbits,” she said. “Some of them were just happy to be outside.”

At the center, there were activity tables for elementary students featuring eclipse-related activities, such as moon phases with Oreo cookies and drawing the sun and the moon on black pieces of papers, said Scott Phelps, a physics mentor/teacher.

The air was filled with themed music, including songs like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Dark Side of the Moon.”

Dilan Diaz, a geography major at Cal State Long Beach, was on his way to the library to start studying until he stumbled upon the large crowd.

He saw his friend Josiah Diaz, a fourth year communications and theory major, and decided to join them for an stress-relieving breather before going to the library.

“There was just a crowd of people (that were) smiling, and that just attracts more people to jump and be giddy,” Dilan Diaz said.

• Solar Eclipse 2024: What Southern California should know as things go dark(er)

That unity was not lost on Joel Zinn, assistant professor at Cal State Long Beach’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, who hosted a viewing party on the campus’s upper quad.

“This is a really great opportunity for me as a scientist to engage with the public,” Zinn said, as he instructed everyone what to see, what to look out for while warning people not to burn their corneas by looking at the sun directly without eclipse glasses.

The glasses were a ubiquitous sight at Caltech, in Pasadena, where hundreds of people, ranging from families to science enthusiasts, gathered at the institution’s athletic field outside the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics Monday morning.

Many came prepared with solar viewing glasses, comfortable blankets, and umbrellas, eagerly awaiting the celestial spectacle.

At precisely 11:13 am, the moment of maximum eclipse, a surge of excitement swept through the crowd assembled at Caltech as skywatchers cheered and applauded beneath the partially obscured sun.A

Organizers said they were expecting 400 people, but many more came.

For many, it was a chance to look back.

Arwen Bobyk, a filmmaker from Pasadena, brought Fawn, her six-year-old chihuahua to the Caltech viewing event.

Bobyk remembered being a child living in British Columbia, Canada, when there was a full solar eclipse.

“It’s funny because it’s one of the really strong memories of my childhood, was going outside of school in the playground and using the glasses and seeing the eclipse,” she said. “So I hadn’t thought of it for a long time, but I was thinking about that.”

In the Inland Empire, a couple hours into their school day, elementary students across Fontana got hands-on lessons in solar patterns as the eclipse began shortly after 10 a.m.

Fontana Unified provided solar eclipse viewing kits to its 30 elementary schools, including Shadow Hills Elementary, where students gathered outside their classrooms Monday.

Astronomers often deem a full solar eclipse an epic “coincidence,” a rare alignment of celestial bodies.

For this one, it is estimated that 31.6 million people in the U.S. lived in the totality’s path, and many others traveled for the chance to see day become night for four and a half minutes.

And that they did.

In some parts of the country, where the eclipse was total, the experience was surreal, lowering temperatures, drawing thousands for four minutes in darkness as the moon completely blocked out the sun, save the outline of its stunning corona.

In New Hampshire, Holly Randall said experiencing the eclipse had been beyond her expectations.

“I didn’t expect to cry when I saw it,” she said, as tears ran down her face.

It had made her think about fundamental aspects of the universe.

“The power of the sun, and life,” she said. “And us, humankind, here on this planet, and how grateful we can be to have this energy source.”

There were tears. There were cheers.

This particular eclipse was unique because the sun was more active than during the last one, in 2017. Plus, it was longer, offering a chance to view the corona and other features, such as solar flares, sun spots and prominences.

Folks, a total solar eclipse won’t happen again in North America until LeBron James is pushing 60 years old (he’ll likely still be playing ball). And if all goes well, we will have sent our first people to Mars.

That’s why even a look at even a partial eclipse was pretty cool for many youngsters.

“We get to learn more about the eclipse, and it was really cool to see it, because I don’t think the next one is going to happen for another 20 years,” said Margaret Matthews, an astronomy club member and a senior at Pasadena High School.

Usually, the sun is a bit player in our day – behind the scenes, so to speak, shining the light, but never with the “light” shined on it. Monday was different, Zinn said last week as he geared up for the eclipse.

On Monday, the sun was the star of the show, he said.

Dating can be difficult. What if you get stood up? What if you are not compatible? What if you get a fake phone number?

And then there is the case of Stewart Lucas Murrey, who sued a group of women after they talked about him in a private Facebook group, warning others about his bad behavior on dating apps.

The lawsuit names as defendants 10 women, but a Los Angeles superior court judge recently tossed out the suit against one. Murrey vows to pursue the legal squabble.

Murrey, a Santa Monica resident, said his social status took a hit because of the comments made by women whom he claims to have met through dating apps. His June 2023 lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, accused the women of defamation and seeks $2 million in damages. He claims sex-based discrimination because he couldn’t join the Facebook group to respond to the claims made against him and alleges a civil conspiracy.

Murrey said he was labeled a murderer, and the women accused him of having a sexually transmitted infection, according to his complaint.

On Monday, Judge Gregory Keosian dismissed Murrey’s lawsuit against one woman after she filed an anti-SLAPP motion, which targets lawsuits that seek to censor, intimidate and silence critics.

Murrey’s lawsuit is centered around the Facebook group “Are we dating the same guy? — Los Angeles.” The group has iterations across the United States. The first started in 2022, according to the online magazine Glamour , serving as a “whisper network” to help women navigate the dating scene in their cities. The Los Angeles group was not created specifically to discuss Murrey, but he was the subject of a message thread, according to court records.

Women on the Los Angeles-centered Facebook group shared in a post what they described as negative experiences with Murrey, according to a GoFundMe campaign started by the defendants to pay legal fees.

One woman shared a story about an exchange she allegedly had with Murrey after the two matched on the Tinder app. He insisted on meeting her that evening, but she was busy, according to a screenshot of her comment. Murrey allegedly found her Instagram page and tracked her down at a Beverly Hills hotel bar, where she was having a business meeting.

Another woman, Vanessa Valdes, threatened to report Murrey when he allegedly insulted her in a message conversation on the dating app Hinge, according to a series of screenshots shared in her anti-SLAPP motion.

“I’m subpoenaing you’re (sic) idiot ‘report’ and possibly suing you for defamation,” Murrey wrote in response, according to screenshots produced for the anti-SLAPP motion.

“By the way, real decent women love me lol,” Murrey added.

More than 50 women wrote about him in the private Facebook group and were labeled co-conspirators in a “large-scale conspiracy to create a fake online social consensus,” according to Murrey’s lawsuit.

Keosian dismissed all claims against Valdes during a hearing Monday on her anti-SLAPP motion and found no evidence of a conspiracy. Legal experts say it’s likely the other named parties in the lawsuit will have similar success.

Valdes’ posts “involved a matter of public interest: women’s security against male violence and harassment,” Keosian wrote in his ruling. In one message posted to the Facebook group, Valdes wrote, “I’m so glad we’re protecting each other.”

“Just feels really good to be dismissed from all counts — it wasn’t just the two counts of defamation, but all 11 counts he filed against me,” Valdes told KTLA after the hearing.

Reality TV personality and rapper Chrisean Rock was sued for allegedly assaulting a man backstage at a Los Angeles show, according to court documents.

Murrey posted his response to Monday’s ruling on a blockchain social media platform and on his personal website. He claimed he did not know Valdes aside from their one interaction on the Hinge app and called her a cyberbully who shared his personal information online.

“This behavior should not be normalized and I am challenging every person in their various roles,” Murrey said, promising to pursue his legal case.

This is not the first time Murrey has taken legal action to accuse a woman of causing him emotional distress. In 2019, he sued a woman he met on Tinder, making similar claims of defamation.

Murrey represented himself in his latest lawsuit. Several other named defendants have upcoming anti-SLAPP hearings in the case, and Murrey will have an opportunity to appeal the court’s recent ruling.

Malpractice attorney Frances O’Meara, who is not affiliated with Murrey’s lawsuit, said that in an anti-SLAPP motion, the court must first consider if a person is being sued while exercising their right to free speech. If so, then the burden shifts back to the person filing the lawsuit, and the question becomes whether the claim has minimal merit to proceed.

California was the first state to pass an anti-SLAPP law, in 1992, to target lawsuits that abuse the judicial system.

Technology and the Internet

Dating app Tinder to acquire photo messaging app Tappy

Tinder, the West Hollywood-based dating app, announced Monday it will buy Tappy, a disappearing-photo messenging app similar to Snapchat.

Jan. 12, 2015

“The statute then expanded to situations of people suing just to shut other people down when they certainly have a right to speak,” O’Meara said.

Anytime people say something on the internet, they put themselves at risk of being sued, said attorney Jeffrey Lewis, who is not affiliated with the Murrey case.

In order to succeed in his defamation lawsuit, Murrey would have had to prove that the statements made about him were false and that he suffered damages, Lewis said.

“Defamation lawsuits are really hard, unlike going to small claims over a breach-of-contract case, or somebody owes you money,” Lewis said. “People get sued all the time for saying things on Facebook, but a group of women posting about a dating experience with one guy, and the one guy deciding to respond with a lawsuit? It’s very unusual.”

The cooked-up holiday hits on the first Thursday of April and usually means burrito lovers can choose from specials and promotions at many Mexican food chains.

The burrito , which means "little donkey," likely arose from the co-mingling of foods in Mexico with that of Europeans, who arrived after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, wrote Jeffrey Pilcher, a professor of food history at the University of Toronto, in his book  "Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food."

Burros, or donkeys, likely inspired the name "burrito" because street vendors sold burritos from baskets carried by burros and the donkeys often also bore a cylindrical bedroll.
