Neem Karoli Baba: Mystic who left footprints on the hearts and minds of Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg

An excerpt from ‘mystics and sceptics: in search of himalayan masters’, edited by namita gokhale..

Neem Karoli Baba: Mystic who left footprints on the hearts and minds of Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg

Neem Karoli Baba’s life was strewn with the miraculous at every step. The accepted laws of physics, and of time and space, did not seem to apply to him. He never employed these extraordinary powers for aggrandisement or gain. He was an emanation of many presences and personages whose spiritual seeking had come before him. I am personally both mystic and sceptic, reluctant to yield my rationality. Yet, there are mysteries that are best left alone, and so it is with my faith and belief in Maharajji.

Neem Karoli Baba, Maharajji to his bhaktas, was a puzzle and a paradox. He left no teachings, no formal legacy, and yet devotees around the world are constantly forging intense connections with him. The barriers of language, culture and religion break down before the compassion, love and sense of fellowship his followers continue to share.

I had the great privilege of meeting Neem Karoli Baba when I was a child of six. He appeared strange, as did the other grown-ups he was sitting and chatting with – except for my grandfather, Dr CD Pande, who was, as ever, comforting and loving. This was probably around the year 1962. The Baba had established himself as a beloved, if mystifying, spiritual figure and presiding deity of Kumaon. His transformative presence imperceptibly changed the way a rigid, caste-bound and hierarchical society addressed its spiritual needs. He invoked the inner resources of agape, caritas and emotional generosity, and fused together a community of believers who continue to congregate and maintain the bond across generations. He was a renowned Himalayan seer with strong roots in Kumaon, but also someone who drew the devotion of disciples and devotees around the world, whose lives he had touched. He may no longer be in his body, but his spiritual energy continues to enlighten people.

Who was this personage whose living presence endures and irradiates the hearts of those he chooses to bless? To my mind, he is the essential Himalayan master, timeless, formless, informed by mysteries humans cannot seek to grasp.

A friend once described him as the patron saint of Silicon Valley. It seems a moniker at odds with the frail, vibrant, often mischievous guru in his woollen plaid blanket. He is also described as the quantum saint, and he did indeed seem to have changed the trajectory of conventional linear thinking of an astonishing array of intellectual entrepreneurs. In my travels, I have encountered devotees of the Baba in distinct but scattered footprints across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. His spiritual aura found resonance with the dreaming minds of a new generation of techno-magicians, who imbibed a deep dose of his crazy wisdom in their youthful journeys to the East.

His most well-known devotee in the US was Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), the Harvard psychologist, whose work created a bridge between Eastern and Western philosophies. Larry Brilliant, the inaugural director of Google.org, took Google’s Larry Page and Jeffrey Skoll, co-founder of eBay, on a transformational pilgrimage to the Kainchi Ashram, nestled on the foothills of the Himalayas, to meet his guru. Steve Jobs arrived at the Ashram in 1974, too late to have a physical darshan of the saint, who had left his bodily form in 1973. Jobs was reported to have a photograph of Neem Karoli Baba beside him in his last days. Mark Zuckerberg spent time in the Ashram as well.

The living legacy of Neem Karoli Baba is perhaps best exemplified in the life and outstanding achievements of Larry Brilliant. Inspired by Maharajji, Larry and Elaine (Girija) Brilliant played a key role in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) smallpox eradication programme. In the extract below from his book Sometimes Brilliant, Brilliant tells us of the arduous goal of seeking a job in the WHO at his guru’s instructions:

But I kept going back anyway, every time he asked me. Trips to Delhi from Kainchi were gruelling, a dozen hours if everything went right. Trains were late or cancelled regularly; bus rides on mountain roads were terrifying. Delhi was an obstacle course of beggars, with the craziest drivers in existence and cows and other animals wandering the streets. It would have been great if Maharajji could have sent me there just once, on the right day to see the right person so I could land the job. But mystical traditions are filled with stories of teachers testing and training and sometimes tormenting their students. A classic example is the story of Milarepa, the 11th-century Tibetan saint Wavy had told us about, who subsisted on nettles during meditation. Milarepa had been a robber and a murderer, so his teacher, Marpa, made him build and tear down tower after tower – a humiliating process that lasted years, but would purify the obstacles to spiritual development, that is, Milarepa’s inner stew of rage, violence, and revenge. I am not Milarepa and I am not a saint, but walking into the WHO office over and over again and explaining that my guru had told me to come work for them might have altered my biochemistry. I think Maharajji wanted me to achieve non-attachment to success. A spiritual apprenticeship can be confusing, even counterintuitive. Those long, exhausting trips, constant rejections, and the daily reminder of my unworthiness, the roller coaster of doubt and the balm of Maharajji’s reassurance, were all part of the preparation. What developed in me at that time was faith – delicate, wavering, tenuous, but faith, nevertheless. Sometimes people say that faith is the opposite of doubt, but I don’t think that is true. To me, the opposite of faith is rigid certainty. Doubt is the constant companion of true faith; like God, it is more verb than noun. Faith is the ride, not the station, as Indians describe it. No one can avoid doubt, scepticism, fear, and uncertainty on the journey to faith if they are honest with themselves. Obstacles are the training ground.

Indeed, faith is the journey, not the station. Faith is the step in the dark which is not there. After Brilliant joined the WHO, after he became a world-renowned epidemiologist and visionary philanthropist, he looked back and reflected on his journey in his book.

At certain moments, the ordinary rules of cause and effect are suspended. Living in a sacred space, surrounded by sacred images, following a guru, a teacher, or a prophet who seems prescient and nudges you towards a specific path – impossible things happen. Since you cannot explain them through reason, you must acquiesce to unreasonable theories. After that, everything begins to make sense again, but in an unexpected way: all impossible things begin to seem quite possible after all.

Neem Karoli Baba’s grace extended far beyond the celebrities he attracted. He was and is the spiritual head of countless Indian families, and his smiling face and blanket-clad form is prominent in framed photographs in homes and public places across Uttarakhand and the rest of northern India. Who was this saint who left such an ineradicable footprint in the hearts and minds of millions?

Inside the Indian temple that draws America’s tech titans

steve jobs visit to neem karoli baba

BHOWALI RANGE, India — The young American arrived at Kainchi Dham ashram in the hills of northern India wearing a T-shirt and a pair of ripped jeans, carrying little. Nobody at the spiritual retreat knew who he was.

Only recently did Mark Zuckerberg reveal that he had traveled to the ashram during the early days of Facebook at the suggestion of one of his mentors, Apple founder Steve Jobs. Zuckerberg said that Jobs had come here as a college student in the 1970s and thought it would be a good place for him to mull the future of his company.

Over the years, the riverside retreat in the state of Uttarakhand has quietly attracted other tech titans from Google, Apple and eBay. Now, thanks to Zuckerberg, who was in India again this week, it is having its moment in the spotlight.

Indian media descended in droves. Attendance tripled. Train and busloads of curiosity seekers from other parts of India began arriving, hoping to get a look at what is now being called the “Zuckerberg temple.”

As with hundreds of other ashrams and spiritual centers in India, Western backpackers and tourists have come to Kainchi for decades.

India’s Modi wants to woo Silicon Valley

But the mystery is why this modest ashram would attract such asteady stream of American tech visionaries. Along with Jobs and Zuckerberg, Google’s Larry Page and Jeffrey Skoll, co-founder of eBay, have also made the pilgrimage.

“Everybody in the world wants to go and see this place,” said Larry Brilliant, a doctor who once lived at the ashram and later became head of Google’s philanthropy division. “It’s a combination of ‘Eat Pray Love,’ know thyself and change the world.”

‘It was like seeing the sun’

Devotees say much of Kainchi’s appeal is connected to its spiritual founder, Neem Karoli Baba. The sadhu, or holy man, came to the hills from a nearby state and lived in a cave for a time — a spot preserved at the ashram and lighted by candles — before the first temple was built in 1964.

A small person wrapped in a large plaid shawl, Neem Karoli Baba normally sat on an elevated cot as followers meditated around him, offering a few kind words, a laugh and occasionally throwing fruit. His philosophy was simple — “all one.”

He exuded goodness, according to devotee Craig Mather, 64, a business analyst from Wales. When he first saw the holy man in 1973, he said, “It was like seeing the sun — dressed in a blanket.”

Jobs arrived in 1974 on a trip around India. He had a growing interest in Eastern spirituality and a classmate had met the guru and urged Jobs to meet him, Jobs told his biographer, Walter Isaacson .

But when he arrived, suffering from dysentery, Jobs was disappointed to learn that the guru had died the previous September. He spent most of his time walking around nearby villages and reading an English version of “Autobiography of a Yogi,” the story of another famed sage, according to Isaacson.

“He was searching for the same thing all of us search for, what we’re still searching for, the meaning of life, why we live, how we can do anything good in our lifetimes,” said Brilliant, who became a lifelong friend. He was also searching for raw food, as Brilliant puts it — “Where the hell am I going to get a good salad?”

Brilliant, who is now senior adviser to Skoll Global Threats Fund, lived at the ashram for three years before Neem Karoli Baba pushed him to leave and take on the smallpox epidemic. At first, Brilliant resisted.

“Every time I would try and meditate he would distract me and frequently it was by throwing fruit,” Brilliant recalled. “He hit me with flying apples a couple of times in my testicles.”

Brilliant eventually talked himself into a job at the World Health Organization and worked for the groundbreaking eradication effort.

The idea of expanding consciousness is inextricably linked with the hippie counterculture movement of the 1960s and early 1970s and those like Jobs who developed personal computers. Jobs left India after seven months but embraced Zen Buddhism and meditation for the rest of his life. More than four decades later, Silicon Valley’s biggest companies are employing “mindfulness counselors” and opening meditation rooms for digitally distracted employees.

Zuckerberg came to Kainchi in 2008, a time when his company had hit a "tough patch," he said recently at a live Facebook event with India's prime minister . He went to see Jobs to ask his advice.

“He told me that in order to reconnect with what I believed as the mission of the company, I should visit this temple that he had gone to in India, early on in his evolution of thinking about what he wanted Apple and his vision of the future to be,” Zuckerberg said. His month-long trip “reinforced for me the importance of what we were doing.”

Is India the next frontier for Facebook?

Zuckerberg remains keenly interested in India , a country with 130 million Facebook users. He visited this week to drum up support for his free Internet.org service for developing countries, which has been criticized for violating principles of net neutrality.

Peace and meditation

The ashram is a cluster of three main temples, offices and simple living quarters that sits alongside the rushing falls of a small tributary of the Kosi River. There is a bare-bones routine, with morning and evening prayers along with communal meals of lentils, potatoes and rice. Devotees help around the compound, meditate or socialize. It’s quieter these days as the ashram is readying to close for the winter, and the snows descend from the Himalayas.

Nonetheless, as morning prayers began Thursday, several worshipers arrived who said they’d come by train to see the place they’d heard so much about.

One was Sheelendra Pratap Singh, 28, a New Delhi resident who said he made the trip because of Zuckerberg’s journey. Singh was searching for inspiration, too. Business at his civil construction firm is down 50 percent.

“I thought if I came here, Kainchi Dham would bless me, and business will improve,” he said.

As he spoke, the morning worship ritual had reached a crescendo. Priest and followers paused in front of a small temple dedicated to Neem Karoli Baba, chanting, beating cymbals, singing and raising their hands in the air in praise. Inside the small marble structure sits a life-like statue of the holy man, wrapped in a purple blanket, lighted with candles and incense.

The idol has a wry, twinkly expression his followers say was similar to the guru’s in life.

That’s funny, he seems to be saying, you thinking you can control everything.

India Trip

Jobs traveled to India in mid-1974 to visit Neem Karoli Baba at his Kainchi ashram with his Reed friend (and eventual Apple employee) Daniel Kottke, searching for spiritual enlightenment. When they got to the Neem Karoli ashram, it was almost deserted because Neem Karoli Baba had died in September 1973. Then they made a long trek up a dry riverbed to an ashram of Haidakhan Babaji.

A proponent of Bhakti Yoga, Neem Karoli Das advised practicing Seva (servitude) to attain the highest form of unconditional devotion to the higher power. Known to his devotees as Maharaj-Ji, Neem Karoli Baba was born as Lakshaman Narayan Sharma in the early 1900’s in Akbarpur village in Firozabad (Uttar Pradesh). He left his well to do Brahmin family after being married at 14, to lead a life of a sadhu. However, he returned to family upon his father’s persuasion and lived a settled married life with two sons and a daughter. He left home in 1958 and boarded a train. He was forced to alight at a village ‘Neem Karoli’ by the conductor for not traveling with a ticket. Thus began his journey as a wandering saint. He later settled in his ashram, building a Hanuman Temple. In 1973 on Sep 1, he slipped into a diabetic coma and passed away in a Vrundavan hospital. His ardent devotees, Baba Ramdass and Larry Brilliant have established ‘Seva Foundation’ based in Berkley, California. The organization was also funded by Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of Apple, is known for his groundbreaking contributions to the technology industry. However, what is less known is his search for spiritual enlightenment. In 1974, Jobs traveled to India in search of answers, and it was during this trip that he met Neem Karoli Baba, a spiritual leader who had a profound impact on his life.

Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj-ji, was a Hindu saint who lived in the foothills of the Himalayas. He was known for his teachings on love and devotion, and his disciples included many Westerners who had come to India in search of spiritual guidance. One of these disciples was Ram Dass, an American spiritual teacher who had written a book about his experiences with Maharaj-ji.

It was through Ram Dass that Jobs learned about Neem Karoli Baba, and he decided to travel to India to meet him. Jobs arrived at Maharaj-ji’s ashram in the small village of Kainchi, where he spent several months meditating and learning from the spiritual leader.

During his time at the ashram, Jobs experienced a profound spiritual awakening that would later influence his life and work. He later said in an interview, “Coming back to America was, for me, much more of a cultural shock than going to India. The people in the Indian countryside don’t use their intellect like we do, they use their intuition instead, and their intuition is far more developed than in the rest of the world. Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect.”

Jobs’ time with Neem Karoli Baba had a significant impact on his life and work. He later credited the experience with helping him develop his philosophy of simplicity, which would become a hallmark of his design aesthetic. He also incorporated elements of Eastern spirituality into his personal life, such as his practice of Zen meditation.

In conclusion, Steve Jobs’ visit to Neem Karoli Baba in India was a turning point in his life, marking the beginning of his journey towards spiritual enlightenment. The lessons he learned during his time with Maharaj-ji had a significant impact on his personal and professional life, shaping his design philosophy and approach to business. The story of Jobs’ spiritual quest serves as a reminder of the importance of looking beyond the material world and seeking answers to life’s deeper questions.

Steve Jobs to Mark Zuckerberg: People who visited Neem Karoli Baba

Neem Karoli Baba Ashram - Kainchi Dham

Kainchi Dham is a temple established in the Kumaon region on the banks of the Kosi River in Uttarakhand. It is not an unknown fact that Neem Karoli Baba of Nainital is popular all over the world. This place got limelight after Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Founder shared with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a town hall meeting that Steve Jobs suggested he visit this place. However, Mark did visit the Kainchi Dham Ashram later when Facebook was going through some tough times. Zuckerberg reached the Ashram carrying a book in his hands with the plan to stay for a day on the premises, but he spent two days there in the spiritual ambiance of the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram.

Neem Karoli Baba, originally known as Lakshman Narayan Sharma was born in 1900 in the Akbarpur Village, Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. He was a devotee of Lord Hanuman. Baba Ji belonged to a financially well-off Brahmin family and by the age of 11, he got married as per his parent’s wish. He left his home sometime later, to become a Sadhu. But at the request of his father, he came back to have a stable married life. Maharajji had two sons and one daughter. There are several ashrams of Maharajji including Kainchi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Hanuman Garhi, Delhi, and New Mexico, along with several others.

How did Lakshman Das become Maharajji?

Ram Dass (Richard Alpert) wrote in his book that Neem Karoli Baba once was traveling by train without a ticket and when British TC came; he forced him to de-board the train at Neem Karoli village (Farrukhabad) in Uttar Pradesh. After Baba came off the train, he sat down with his tongs fixed on the ground. The railway officials then tried starting the train after the guard showed the green signal but even after a lot of effort, the train did not start.

Neem Karoli Baba

However, when after trying so much, the train was not starting, a local magistrate who knew Baba, asked the TC to apologize and get Baba ji back on the train with respect. When the official apologized, Baba agreed to get on the train for two conditions –

  • To make a railway station at Neem Karoli village
  • The railways should give respect and treat Sadhus better.

The officials agreed as he asked and then jokingly said “Is it up to me to start trains”, and boarded the train again. As soon as Maharajji boarded, the train started, but the pilots asked not to proceed until Baba showed his blessings to them. Then Baba gave them blessings and the train proceeded forward. A train station was later built in the village of Neem Karoli and Baba lived there for some time.

He was known by several names like Lakshman Das, Handi Wallah Baba, Tallaiya Baba, and Tikonia Walla Baba. After he died in 1973, a Samadhi shrine was built in his Vrindavan Ashram.

Notable disciples of Neem Karoli Baba include spiritual teacher Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), singer and spiritual teacher Bhagavan Das (Kermit Michael Riggs), meditation teacher Lama Surya Das (Jeffrey Miller), and the renowned musician Jai Uttal (Douglas Uttal) and Krishna Das (Jeffrey Kagel).

It is believed that Jobs found inspiration from the teachings and philosophy of Neem Karoli Baba. Neem Karoli Baba death

Baba Neem Karoli passed away on Sep 11, 1973, in a hospital at Vrindavan after he went into a diabetic coma. Due to pain in his chest, he visited a heart specialist in Agra, he had been returning by night train to Kainchi. He began convulsing en route and requested his traveling companions to be taken to Shri Dham Vrindavan.

In the hospital emergency room, the doctor placed an oxygen mask over his face and gave him injections. The hospital staff declared that he was in a diabetic coma but that his pulse was fine.

Suddenly Maharajji rose and pulled the oxygen mask off his face and the blood pressure measuring band from his arm. He was found saying,

“Bekar (useless)”

Maharajji asked for Ganga water but was presented with regular water as there was no Ganga water nearby. He then repeated several times each time in a lower pitch,

“Jaya Jagadish Hare” (“Hail to the Lord of the Universe”)

Eventually, his face became very peaceful, and all signs of pain vanished. He was declared dead.

Some of his personal belongings and his samadhi shrine are present in the Vrindavan ashram.

When Julia Roberts revealed she was drawn to Hinduism after coming across a picture of Neem Karoli Baba

Julia roberts first spoke about being a practicing hindu who goes to temple to 'chant, pray, celebrate' in 2011..

steve jobs visit to neem karoli baba

Several Hollywood actors have shown a fascination for India and Indian culture over the years, but perhaps among the most prominent celebrities to have embraced India remains Julia Roberts. Portions of her film Eat, Pray, Love were shot in India, but contrary to popular belief, she didn’t become fascinated by Hinduism after working on the movie, but was already practicing before signing on to star in it.

While the actor has always been careful about not talking too much about her personal ideologies, she has spoken about being a practicing Hindu on a handful of occasions in the past, mostly around the time when she was promoting Eat, Pray, Love.

steve jobs visit to neem karoli baba

In an interview with George Stephanopoulos for ABC news, she was asked about how she became acquainted with Hinduism, she said, “I practice, I practice a lot of things… Hinduism is something that I’m very intrigued by, and very interested in… It came from seeing a picture of a guru called Neem Karoli Baba . I was so drawn to this picture of this person, and I didn’t know who he was, and what he was about, but felt a very strong interest… He passed long before I saw his picture, but it was very intriguing, and that’s the way things come into our lives. They’re not these big, great crashing moments, but these little things…”

Roberts first talked about being a practising Hindu in a 2011 interview with Elle, when she said, “I’m definitely a practising Hindu. I’ve been so spoiled with my friends and family in this life. Next time, I want to be just something quiet and supporting.” She said that she goes to temple to ‘chant, pray and celebrate.’

Of course, this piece of information made headlines, but Roberts maintained a dignified silence when asked about it again at a press conference for the film. “I will say this about Hinduism, which I practice… I didn’t suddenly make this movie and start practicing Hinduism. It was a part of my life for a very long time, and I realised I should stick with what my mom told me 22 years ago, ‘You’re an actor; act, don’t talk about politics, don’t talk about religion’.”

Festive offer

Eat, Pray, Love was released in 2010 and became a major box office success. Roberts is among the world’s highest grossing movie stars, and is the recipient of multiple accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and three Golden Globe Awards. Other prominent devotees of Neem Karoli Baba are Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli.
