The roughly 150 guests didn’t arrive until late yesterday evening but preparations for Tuesday’s state banquet, which saw King Charles III and Queen Camilla host the President and First Lady of South Korea on the first night of their three-day state visit, had been underway for a long time. Indeed, they began months ago.

Senior royals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, donned their white tie finery – and their tiaras – for a night celebrating the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

While all eyes will be on the royals, in particular the Princess of Wales, who routinely dazzles at these events and is more than stepping into her new role within The Firm, the guest list will also boast dignitaries and notable figures from both the UK and South Africa, including prime minister Rishi Sunak and newly appointed foreign secretary Lord Cameron, Britain’s former prime minister.

The venue, as ever, will be the opulent Ballroom, where the traditional horseshoe shaped table will be laid with some 2,000 pieces of cutlery and hundreds of pieces of crockery; each laid with military precision and personally signed off by the King himself.

The state banquet, a highlight of any state visit, is particularly significant as it is the first incoming state visit since King Charles III’s coronation. The Queen hosted some 100 heads of state during her historic reign, starting with King Gustaf VI Adolf and Queen Louise of Sweden in 1954.

The evening is a symphony for the senses. The conductor? The Master of the Household. The musicians? The hundreds of royal household staff, including chefs, footmen, pages, housemaids and florists, who will have spent many hours carefully rehearsing their parts ahead of the final performance.

The largest of the state rooms, the Ballroom was completed in the 1850s, during the reign of Queen Victoria. The musicians’ gallery, complete with an organ, remains as a reminder of its original iteration as the Ball and Concert room. Echoes of previous monarchs are also seen in the two thrones that were made for the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Above them is a triumphal arch, flanked by sphinxes and enclosing the throne canopy. The winged figures at the top of the arch symbolise History and Fame and support a medallion with the profiles of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Dozens of guests are seated around the horseshoe table set with dazzling silver-gilt from King George IV’s Grand Service. Designed to rival the gilded collections of Napoleon I, the 4,000 pieces for dining and display include every utensil imaginable, from marrow scoops and ice spades to olive spoons. There is a whole team of staff dedicated to maintaining these exquisite collections: the Silver and China Pantries. They use precise measurements to align each piece; each plate is 45cm from the next.

Each place is set with two knives and forks, with a dessert spoon and fork above. To the left of each place are a porcelain side plate, a silver butter knife and a small glass butter dish. There are also six glasses: water, red and white wine, dessert wine, champagne and port. Each guest shares a salt, mustard pot and pepper caster with their neighbour. In the centre of the table are candelabra, mirror plateaux and dessert stands from the Grand Service. Other pieces are displayed around the outside of the horseshoe. Beautiful flowers are tastefully arranged in the centre of the table.

While much of the preparation can be done in advance, this is not true of the food, which is prepared as close to the start of the meal as possible to ensure mouth-wateringly fresh food. Four courses are served, with each guest given a menu written in French. A starter (often fish) is followed by a main course, dessert, and finally fresh fruit and petit fours. For the South African state visit, chefs have made the national flower , the protea, out of sugar, to be served. The plates are kept off the table and kept hot until serving. Often the menu highlights the best of British produce. This will undoubtedly be the case for King Charles III, who has long championed British farming and agriculture. Alcoholic drinks come from the Government Wine Cellar, while the food is prepared by chefs of the Royal Household.

The guest of honour or visiting head of state, in this case President Yoon Suk Yeol, will be seated to the right of King Charles III. He will speak to President Yoon Suk Yeol for the first course, then swap his attention to the person seated on his left. Seating works outwards in order of seniority, so the Prince and Princess of Wales can expect to be seated on the top table, close to King Charles III and the Queen.

The dress code for a state banquet is typically white tie, court dress and full dress uniforms. This includes national dress. Men typically wear a black tailcoat and trousers, white piqué shirt with wing collar, white piqué waistcoat with lapels and three buttons and a white piqué bow tie. Crucially, decorations and medals of honour are also worn. For women, it is a ballgowns, gloves, decorations and tiaras, if appropriate. This rare opportunity for royals to bring out the most precious of pieces in the royal collection is what makes it such an exciting evening for royal watchers.

After processing into the Ballroom, the guests will take their seats. The meal traditionally begins with a toast by the monarch and the visiting head of state, before the food is served. Royal household staff are divided into some 20 teams of four. Each ‘team’ comprises of a page, footman, under butler and a wine butler, each of whom will have been well briefed on any dietary requirements or additional needs. A string orchestra typically plays throughout the meal, with bagpipers entering the ballroom at the end of the evening to signal the end of the festivities.

It’s hard to believe that after a sense of almost normalcy we’re back to having to close down again. Still, we must stay focused and thankful for these lovely moments of respite when we were able to forget this terrible pandemic for a while.

State visits

The term “state visit” refers to the official visit by one head of state to another. It is different from other official visits in that the programme has ceremonial elements such as arrival and departure ceremonies, a wreath-laying ceremony, banquets and meetings between the head of state and delegations. A state visit may also include bilateral political meetings, business conferences, activities promoting culture, trade and industry, and visits to social and cultural institutions.

State visits encourage, enhance and strengthen contact with other countries. The purpose of a state visit is to build relations and promote Norwegian interests abroad. When The King and Queen make state visits abroad, they are accompanied by the Norwegian foreign minister and representatives of the Government. When foreign heads of state make state visits to Norway, they are the guests of The King and Queen.

Between two and four state visits are usually made each year: one or two visits by The King and Queen to a foreign head of state and one or two visits by another head of state to Norway.

Please follow the links below to the first news article from each visit - again leading on to other articles, speeches, photo albums etc.

Tourists get more access to royal family residences with 'exclusive tours' of Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle

A picture of Balmoral Castle exterior with some colourful gardens

Rooms at Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace that were previously off limits will be opened to the public for the first time, giving visitors a sneak peek into royal life.

The royal residences were open to tourists before, but now visitors will be able to see even more of the historical locations and take "exclusive tours" with special guides.

However, it comes at a price.

Tickets for what's called "The Balmoral Experience" cost 100 pounds ($192).

Significant royal residences

Scotland's Balmoral Castle was thought to be Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence, with the late monarch spending her final days there before her death in 2022.

It was something of a retreat for the late monarch, who spent almost every summer of her life at the estate.

"I suppose Balmoral is a place one looks forward to very much," she said in 1992.

"I think granny is the most happy here. I think she really, really loves the Highlands," her granddaughter, Princess Eugenie said in 2012.

Buckingham Palace is in central London and is an administrative hub for the royal family.

Its balcony is a centrepiece for mayor royal events, with the royals typically gathering there to wave to crowds below.

Balmoral interior opened for the first time

Before now, access to Balmoral Castle was pretty much restricted to the grounds and the ballroom.

But a series of limited tours will give visitors a more intimate look at Queen Elizabeth's summer home later this year.

Here's how the Balmoral website describes it :

"For the first time since the castle was completed in 1855, we have been granted permission to take you on a private tour with our experienced guides. "They will take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle. "You will learn about the origins of the Castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal family. Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today by their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the royal family."

The tours are limited to 40 people per day and will only run in July and August.

Tickets cost 100 pounds, with an extra 50 pounds for afternoon tea.

Balmoral tickets sell out in a day

Within a day after local media reported the new tour, all tickets have sold out , according to the Balmoral Castle website.

On Wednesday, the website was briefly brought down by demand.

"As we are currently experiencing a high demand of bookings, you have been placed in a queue," the website read.

General admission tickets, which covers entry to the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are still available.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and their four children pose for a holiday snap in 1972.

More access to Buckingham Palace

Before this announcement, the public could tour 19 state rooms at Buckingham Palace.

But the East Wing — a section of Buckingham Palace which includes the front facade and the famous balcony — has been off limits.

In July and August, "expert guides" will lead small tourist groups through the wing.

It will lead people to a room that leads onto the balcony, according to Royal Collections Trust website .

But it doesn't say if tourists will be able to go out on the balcony.

Adults will have to be pay an extra 75 pounds on top of the standard admission ticket to the state rooms — so it will cost at least 107 pounds.

There are limited tickets available for these tours, which haven't gone on sale yet.

King Charles Is Opening New Doors to Royal Palaces, Including Family's Summer Retreat, to Public for First Time

Visitors will be able to tour Balmoral Castle, where Queen Elizabeth died, and new nooks of Buckingham Palace, including the room that leads out to the iconic balcony

Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace are welcoming visitors in new ways.

It was revealed this week that both royal residences will welcome visitors into previously unseen spaces through ticketed tours this summer. In fact, Balmoral Castle in Scotland is opening "for the first time since the castle was completed in 1855," its website says.

Balmoral is famed as the royal family's cherished summer sanctuary in the Scottish Highlands, but it also holds sad memories for the group. Prince William  and  Prince Harry were spending time there in August 1997 when their mother, Princess Diana , tragically died in a car crash in Paris.

Queen Elizabeth , who her granddaughter  Princess Eugenie  once said was "most happy" at Balmoral, died there in 2022. Sources told PEOPLE at the time it was fitting she spend her last hours there because it was such a special place for her and her family — and now, the public can step into the castle in Aberdeenshire for themselves.

The Castle Internal Guided Tours experience is touted as a "historical journey" through "several of the beautiful rooms," comprised of a private guide that talks visitors through its history from acquisition by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845 to a peek at how King Charles , Queen Camilla and other royal family members continue to use the space today.

The royal family has previously permitted tours at Balmoral around the grounds and gardens, but access inside the castle was limited to the ballroom, making the Castle Internal Guided Tours the most intimate yet.

The tours are set to run from July 1 to August 4, capped at 10 people per session. The general guided excursion currently costs about $126 a person, while tickets with afternoon tea are about $189 — and are open to adults only.

While many of the internal Balmoral Castle tours have already sold out, there’s still plenty of availability for the Balmoral General Admission, featuring a trove of artwork by King Charles plus some royal fashion. The Ballroom promises "His Majesty The King's watercolor collection depicting scenery at Balmoral, Highgrove and Sandringham" and a "collection of outfits worn by Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla, the late Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother."

While Buckingham Palace has been a popular stop for royal watchers since 1993 when Queen Elizabeth opened its gates as a fundraiser after a devastating fire ripped through Windsor Castle in 1992, new areas of the famous London residence will be available to tour for the first time this year.

The East Wing of Buckingham Palace, where the King filmed his Christmas broadcast in December 2023, will be toured for the first time come summer. On April 3, the Royal Collection Trust announced that the iconic palace will open the wing via the Principal Floor following five years of restorative work.

Jonathan Brady - WPA Pool /Getty

The East Wing includes the front façade and iconic palace balcony, "where the monarch and members of the royal family have gathered for public appearances during special occasions or historic moments since 1851," including royal weddings, coronations and Trooping the Colour, the annual celebration of the monarch's birthday.

The Royal Collection Trust said that the royal family still uses the wing today for official meetings and events.

Royal watchers can save the date for East Wing Highlights Tours held daily in July and August starting July 15, booked in addition to standard admission to the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace.

The palace will be open seven days a week in July and August for the first time since 2019 before scaling back to five days a week in September.

While Buckingham Palace is synonymous with the British royals and serves as the hub of the monarchy’s operations, King Charles and Queen Camilla don’t actually live there! The palace is in the middle of a $460 million renovation reportedly not due to be complete until 2027 .

Stuart C. Wilson/Getty

As King Charles, 75, invites the public into new nooks for the first time this summer, The Times cited royal biographer Robert Hardman’s prediction that the King would open up Balmoral during his reign.

"Balmoral is private property. However, it needs public footfall not just to help pay the bills but to bring benefits to the wider community and to remain in step with other stately homes," the outlet quoted Hardman as writing in Charles III. New King. New Court. The Inside Story 2024 , which was published under the title The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy in the U.S. in January.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is a working royal palace and the King's official residence. Built in 1825, Buckingham Palace was commissioned by King George IV who asked architect John Nash to design a grand palace fit for a king within the city of London.

The "palace fit for a king" has a total of 775 rooms, many of them filled with paintings by Old Masters and rare antiques. While the private living quarters are off-limits to visitors, a tour does include the 19 staterooms where the royal family entertains. The White Drawing Room is the grandest of all staterooms, with gilded ceilings and white pilasters; it is frequently the setting for pre-dinner gatherings. The largest is the Ball Room, completed in 1855 during Queen Victoria's reign. It is the setting for concerts and state banquets. The Throne Room holds the two coronation chairs originally commissioned for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, but they were most recently used for the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Buckingham Palace is only open for 10 weeks a year from late July through September while the King is at Balmoral in Scotland on summer holiday. Still, the palace often holds special events for ticket holders throughout the year.

Westminster Abbey

As one of the country's greatest landmarks, Westminster Abbey is a cathedral with 1,000 years of history, much of it tied to the royal family. Originally built as a Benedictine monastery, Westminster Abbey was rebuilt in 1065 by Edward the Confessor, and later rebuilt by King Henry III between 1220 and 1272. Designed in the Gothic style, the cathedral is recognized worldwide as an architectural masterpiece.

Westminster Abbey has been the site of every coronation since 1066, as well as the setting for numerous royal occasions. The Abbey held state funerals for both Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Princess Diana, and was the site of the 2011 wedding of Prince William of Wales and Princess Catherine. Westminster Abbey is also the burial site of more than 3,000 prominent Great Britons, including many royals. Queen Anne, Edward the Confessor, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth I are all buried here.

St. Paul's Cathedral

Designed by famous architect Sir Christopher Wren, St. Paul's Cathedral in London is a city icon that has been hosting cultural and religious events since 1665. The Baroque-style cathedral sits on Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the city of London. At 365 feet, its dome is one of the highest in the world, and the cathedral was the tallest building in London until 1963. The prominent dome and surrounding church spires are some of the most recognized landmarks in London.

St. Paul's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral and serves as the seat of the Bishop of London. The cathedral has hosted many prominent religious services, including the state funerals of Margaret Thatcher and Sir Winston Churchill. Both Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II celebrated their Jubilee Services at the cathedral. The wedding of King Charles and Princess Diana was also celebrated at the cathedral in July 1981, which was one of the most-watched television events in history.

As a working cathedral, St. Paul's hosts daily Anglican services, but visitors can purchase tickets for private and self-guided tours. Highlights include The Grand Organ, which has operated since 1695, the throne of the Bishop in the Quire, and The American Memorial Chapel, dedicated to the 28,000 Americans who lost their lives in Britain during World War II.

Hampton Court Palace

Famous for its extensive gardens and maze, Hampton Court Palace is a Tudor masterpiece that has hosted royals since the early 16th century. Originally commissioned by Cardinal Wolsey, Hampton Court caught the attention of King Henry VIII, who eventually made it his home, bringing all six of his wives here.

Henry VIII used the palace as a place to entertain, and its grand design was considered both modern and ostentatious at the time. The centerpiece of the palace is The Great Hall, a towering space designed by Henry VIII that was meant to convey his power. Boasting a magnificent hammerbeam roof, the Great Hall contains artifacts like Anne Boleyn's coat of arms. Many historic events occurred at the palace, including the divorce of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves. He also married his wife Catherine Howard at the palace.

The palace also served as a working royal residence until the 19th century, when Queen Victoria decided to open it to the public in 1838. Today, visitors can tour the palace, its grounds, and its ornate chapel. One of the most popular sites of Hampton Court is the garden hedge maze. Originally commissioned in the early 1700s, it is the oldest surviving hedge maze in Great Britain.

Tower Of London

While Hampton Court Palace was the location of everyday life for Tudor-era royals, the Tower of London is where some Tudor royals met their end. Built in 1070 by William the Conquerer, the Tower of London was built as a fortress-like structure designed to defend London against its enemies. A mighty stone tower sits as its centerpiece and the structure took 20 years to build with stone imported from France. For the next two centuries, the Tower was expanded to include a defensive wall, an armory, and a national mint. The Tower of London was frequently used to house royals and their precious possessions during times of distress.

The Tower of London has been the site of many tragedies involving the royal family. It is where both Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey spent their final days before execution; it is also where two princes, the children of Edward IV, would perish during the War of the Roses.

Throughout history, the Tower of London has served as a fortress, palace, and prison. Today, it remains one of London's most popular attractions. Visitors can tour the Tower and view its collection of armor or meet one of the 37 Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters, who guard the Tower. The most secure and highly protected wing of the Tower is the Jewel House, which contains more than 23,000 gemstones, including precious tiaras, necklaces, and other gems that make up the official Crown Jewels.

National Portrait Gallery

Established in 1856 by Lord Ellesmere, the National Portrait Gallery is located in the heart of London near Trafalgar Square. One of London's best museums for art-lovers, the gallery has more than 22,000 works and houses the most extensive portrait collection in the world. Recently reopened after a three-year refurbishment, it has thousands of portraits of prominent Britons, from historical leaders like Winston Churchill to contemporary figures like Elton John and David Bowie.

The National Portrait Gallery holds official portraits of every prominent member of the royal family and has extensive collections from the Tudor, Elizabethan, Edwardian, and Victorian reigns. The gallery also contains the official portraits of every modern royal, including King Charles, Kate Middleton, and Prince William. A popular site for tourists, visitors can take guided tours or view rotating exhibitions of British arts and culture. Most recently, the gallery hosted a collection of photography and a Beatles retrospective by Sir Paul McCartney.

London's most famous park was originally founded by the monks of Westminster Abbey until Henry VIII purchased it to use as his hunting grounds. It remained a private park until Charles I permitted the public to access it in 1637. Throughout the park, you can find monuments and statues dedicated to the royal family. The Diana Memorial Fountain, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth in 2004, is built of Cornish granite and is designed to reflect the ebb and flow of Princess Diana's life. The Queen Elizabeth Gates in Hyde Park was designed to honor Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. They were unveiled in 1993 and feature a whimsical design of a lion and a unicorn, representing England and Scotland.

The park's winding paths, lake, and gardens are a popular outing in central London any time of year. At Speakers Corner, visitors can see where radicals used to "get on their soapbox" and preach about everything from politics to religion. The centerpiece of the park is The Serpentine Lake, where visitors can rent paddle boats or dine at the boat house. In the winter, Hyde Park turns into a winter wonderland, with an ice rink, food stands, and a Santaland with carnival rides. Visiting the park is a must-do in London at Christmas .

The Royal Mews

Ever dreamed of seeing a real gilded carriage fit for royalty? At The Royal Mews, a working stable and museum adjacent to Buckingham Palace, you can. The Royal Mews is responsible for all road travel for the King and the Royal Family, from horse and carriage ceremonies to official car processions. The organization has been around since the 14th century, and its headquarters was built in the gardens of Buckingham Palace in 1825.

A visit to the Mews might include seeing one of the stable's Cleveland Bay or Windsor Grey horses, or trying out a replica open carriage like the one Queen Victoria used. Visitors can also see the livery worn by the King's coachmen or learn how to tack a horse on a wooden pony. The real draw, however, is the fleet of carriages used to carry the royal family throughout history, including the 260-year-old Gold State Coach. The coach features gilded woodwork, intricately carved sculpture, and painted panels of Roman gods and goddesses. Weighing over four tons, the carriage has been used to transport the monarchy in every coronation since that of William IV. As a note, The Royal Mews is closed until March 1, 2024.

Madame Tussaud's

It is possible to get close to members of the royal family -- wax versions, that is. The world-famous Madame Tussauds wax museum in London is home to 150 lifelike figures, including members of Britain's royal family. The museum's Royal Palace exhibit includes a throne room with wax figure renderings of every major royal, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, and Queen Camilla.

Open since 1884 on Baker Street in London, Madame Tussauds is a London institution that not only offers a lighthearted look at the world's most famous faces, but the museum has the direct support of the monarchy. The museum's Queen Elizabeth figure is the 23rd incarnation the museum has created throughout her historic 70-year reign. During its creation, Madame Tussauds' sculptors collaborated with Buckingham Palace by providing images of the clay sculptures as they were in progress to create the most authentic and lifelike incarnation of "Her Majesty."

Fortnum And Mason

London's most famous tea shop, Fortnum and Mason , has had a long and storied relationship with the royal family since it was first established in 1707. Founder William Fortnum was originally a footman for Queen Anne. He later established his tea shop with Hugh Mason, and the two would go on to create a culinary empire that still provides tea to the royal family today. The flagship store in Picadilly sells everything from the Royal Blend tea to Sandringham coffee blend and has held a Royal Warrant (products approved by the monarchy) since 1910.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was known to do her Christmas shopping annually in person at the store, and every modern royal has visited the shop in recent years. Queen Elizabeth, Queen Camilla, and Princess Catherine all visited together in 2012 for the opening of the store's Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon. Today, thousands of tourists and shoppers visit the store to purchase tea, coffee, and gourmet food as well as the shop's famous Christmas hampers. One can also enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in London  in the tea salon where treats like cucumber sandwiches, scones, and pastries are served on the store's iconic blue plates.

Windsor Castle

The oldest occupied castle in the world, Windsor Castle has been home to 40 monarchs. Built by William the Conquerer in the 11th century, Windsor Castle was built high on the River Thames at the edge of hunting grounds. It was designed to serve as a military fortification to guard the western approach to London. King Edward II began converting it into a royal residence in the 14th century.

Windsor Castle remained a preferred residence of royals for centuries and was the favored respite of Queen Victoria, who spent much of her reign here. Today, visitors can see the castle's state apartments or view attractions like Queen Mary's doll house. The Grand Reception Room contains real gold chandeliers and gilded ceilings; as the most luxurious room in the castle, it was Queen Elizabeth II's favorite room to entertain guests.

Another highlight of Windsor Castle is St. George's Chapel, located within the castle grounds. St. George's Chapel is the burial place of 11 monarchs, including Henry VIII, Charles II, and most recently, Queen Elizabeth II. The chapel has also been the site of several royal weddings, including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as well as The Earl and Countess of Wessex. A worthwhile day trip destination from London , Windsor Castle is located about an hour from the city.

Kensington Palace

Originally built as a modest home known as Nottingham House, Kensington Palace started out as the country retreat of King William in 1687 and was gradually expanded over the years to become the palace that stands today. It was the birthplace of Queen Victoria, who spent most of her childhood here until she moved to Buckingham Palace. Kensington Palace has been home to many royals over the years, including Princess Margaret and Princess Diana. It currently serves as the official London residence of the Duke and Duchess of Wales and their three children.

Visitors to Kensington Palace can see the King's and Queen's State Rooms, as well as a permanent exhibition on the life of Queen Victoria. The exhibit offers a glimpse of her reimagined childhood rooms, as well as her collection of jewelry gifted to her by her beloved husband Albert. Kensington Palace is surrounded by expansive gardens, including the Sunken Garden, an all-white garden dedicated to the memory of Princess Diana. The garden features a statue of the late Princess with her sons, William and Harry. The statue was unveiled in 2017 on what would have been the Princess of Wales' 60th birthday.

The palace museum is open year-round and also hosts seasonal exhibits highlighting the fashion, decor, and history of the royal family. The Orangery at Kensington Palace serves traditional afternoon tea daily, and the palace shop sells an extensive collection of royal-inspired merchandise.

St. James Park

Similar to Hyde Park, Henry VIII originally acquired St. James Park in 1532 to serve as royal hunting grounds. St. James Park is London's oldest Royal Park and one of its most beautiful. The park is bordered on all sides by The Mall, Green Park, Buckingham Palace, and Whitehall. It is also adjacent to Birdcage Walk, the site of the Churchill War Rooms. Listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, the park is laid out in a series of gardens surrounding a small lake. The lake is home to various waterbirds, including the park's famous pelicans, which were introduced as a gift from a Russian ambassador to King Charles II in 1664.

St. James Park's location near The Mall offers an ideal viewing site for royal processions and historical celebrations that occur along the route to Buckingham Palace. It also provides views of The Changing of the Guard from its northern entrance, and from the Blue Bridge, which spans the lake at the center of the park, you can enjoy picture-perfect views of the London Eye and Buckingham Palace.

The True Story Behind the Royal Visit in the ‘Downton Abbey’ Movie

How exaggerated was 'Downton Abbey's Royal visit?

The Big Picture

  • The Downton Abbey movie explores a royal visit, weaving historical events into a fictional narrative.
  • King George V's visit and downstairs mutiny blend fact and fiction, adding depth to the story.
  • The plot involving Princess Mary's marital problems has roots in rumor and historical context.

After a successful six-season run, the much-loved drama Downton Abbey came to an end, but the story has been kept alive with two sequel films and a third on the way . The franchise is set in England during the early 20th century, as the residence of the grand house of Downton Abbey endures scandals, hardships, and heartbreaks. But one thing that is particularly enthralling about the story is the exploration of history. Creator Julian Fellowes excels at portraying real history through fictionalized characters . Though this skill is present in Downton Abbey , it is more prevalent in Fellowes' recent series, The Gilded Age , which was originally intended to serve as a Downton Abbey prequel .

With a season depicting World War I and a plot instigated by the tragedy of the Titanic, Downton Abbey is no stranger to incorporating history , and the movies are the same. The original Downton Abbey movie in 2019 may not center on a widely recognized historical event, but like many plots in the show, it is based on truth, to an extent. The story revolves around King George V ( Simon Jones ) and Queen Mary ( Geraldine James ) visiting the titular house and the ensuing drama as the characters meet the Royals. This is not a direct recount, partly because the central Crawley family is not based on a particular family, but the idea of what people in that social class were like in that time period. However, the Royal visit has a historical basis. While no host could be quite like the Crawleys and their servants, there is some historical precedent for the events in the film , though they are exaggerated to make the story more interesting.

Downton Abbey

1927. The Crawleys prepare to host King George V and Queen Mary at Downton Abbey.

What Happens in the 'Downton Abbey' Film?

Because the show ended several years before and wrapped up the character's plots satisfactorily, the idea of a movie seemed strange. Returning to Downton required a plot and one that could play out in the mere two hours that a film provides. But Fellowes found a solution. Rather than opening up another tragedy or danger for the beloved characters , he gave them an honor. The King and Queen staying at Downton is a big deal, especially to Robert Crawley ( Hugh Bonneville ), who has always been vocal about his love and support for the Royal family. But nothing is simple at Downton, and the Royal visit results in a downstairs feud, a plot to assassinate the King, and characters learning secrets about the Royal family.

Replaced by the Royal staff, the Downton Staff takes matters into their own hands, tricking the Royal servants into being away long enough to serve the King and Queen themselves. Meanwhile, Robert's Irish son-in-law, Tom Branson ( Allen Leech ), is contacted by the mysterious Captain Chetwode ( Stephen Campbell Moore ), who he believes to be investigating him regarding the visit because of his past connections. However, Tom discovers Captain Chetwode is actually looking for an ally against the King , leading Tom to stop an assassination attempt on the monarch. There are less violent plots, with Violet Crawley ( Maggie Smith ) trying to convince an estranged relative to leave her wealth to Robert because of their family connection, Edith ( Laura Carmichael ) and Cora ( Elizabeth McGovern ) working to keep Edith's husband, Bertie ( Harry Hadden-Paton ), from traveling with the Prince while Edith gives birth to their first child, and Tom inadvertently saving Princess Mary's ( Kate Phillips ) marriage. Though the story isn't entirely true, there are historical elements to the plot.

What About 'Downton Abbey's Royal Visit Is True?

One of the obvious historical parts of the film is the new characters. The King, Queen, and Princess were real people. Although their characterization may not be entirely accurate in the film, the basic facts are. King George V reigned from 1910-1936, and the film is set in 1927, so he is the correct monarch for the time. According to research from Times , like many royals before them, King George V and Queen Mary did travel to the countryside to visit aristocratic families like the Crawleys, but none took place in 1927. Instead, in an interview with Vanity Fair , Julian Fellowes claims to have based his story on King George and Queen Mary's July 1912 visit to Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire , which is near where Downton is, and the house is one of the largest in England. Downton Abbey even filmed a few scenes there. However, it is not exact. Times reported that Alastair Bruce , the film's historical advisor, had a different royal visit in mind when guiding the story. He used information from when King George V and Queen Mary visited his ancestors at Broomhall House in 1923 to show how the event would be run.

When explaining his inspiration to Vanity Fair , Fellowes noted that during these visits, "There would usually be a parade or a public event of some kind, or a well-publicized visit to a coal mine so that people could get out on the streets and see them for themselves." And Downton Abbey shows many of these festivities. Though, unlike the Wentworth Woodhouse visit, there was no visit to a coal mine after a tragic accident, the film includes the expected public appearances such as the parade and ball in the film. But, like many things with a historical basis in Downton Abbey , it does not look the same.

Perhaps the most crucial difference is the downstairs plot. While the servants' story hinges on the Royal family bringing their servants to replace the House staff, which causes the mutiny downstairs, that is not accurate. Though the Times suggests Queen Mary did travel with certain servants, it was not a full staff. There was no replacement cook to enrage Mrs. Patmore ( Lesley Nicol ), just a footman, a page, two dressers, two chauffeurs, a lady-in-waiting, a maid for her lady-in-waiting, and a detective, which may sound like a lot, but, compared to the entourage in Downton Abbey , isn't so bad.

What Else Is Accurate in the 'Downton Abbey' Movie?

Understandably, not every element can be true, as the story often requires embellishment to intrigue the audience. This is the case for Tom's plot. Though a member of the family through his marriage to the departed Sybil Crawley ( Jessica Brown Findlay ) , Tom does not have the same perspective on the Royal family as the Crawleys. A proud Irish man and once a radical thinker, Tom is not surprised when he believes himself investigated. Yet he patiently tries to explain that his politics have become less extreme over the years, and he poses no threat. Though King George V did rule during a time of unrest between England and Ireland, the worst was over by 1927. The Anglo-Irish war took place in 1919-1921, and historian Kevin Matthews says, "By 1927, most of Ireland had moved on to other problems." The unlikely plot of the assassination attempt is not accurate, but the sentiment wasn't far off. With a small crumb of truth, it was a good way to add tension and give Tom something to do.

However, there is more truth to Princess Mary's plot. The marital problems between the princess and Viscount Henry Lascelles were widely rumored, though unconfirmed. Editor of the biography The Quest for Queen Mary, Hugo Vickers claims, "It's always been passed down by word of mouth that he's difficult, and the general line was that he was old brute, but it's hard to find evidence." Yet in 1927, the idea of a divorce in the Royal family would have been unthinkable , even if the princess were unhappy, so her contemplation of it in Downton Abbey is not entirely realistic. Though the discussion is slightly modernized, it takes its cues from history. Though these things are wildly exaggerated for the story, there is a certain amount of truth to them. Overall, Downton Abbey delivers a plausible, if not perfectly accurate, story for viewers to enjoy.

Downton Abbey is available to stream on Netflix in the U.S.
