To say that my trip to Iran was amazing would be an understatement. Tap Persia was the best agency that I could have chosen, they organized everything perfectly for me, my guide Mojtaba was kind and knowledgeable and honestly, I have no adequate words to describe how beautiful my trip was. I spent 8 days covering many cities and came back wanting more! Thank you Rasool and Mojtaba for your kindness and most excellent customer service! I have every intention of coming back to beautiful Iran again! Best, Nasseema Visited May 2022 Tripadvisor

I got TAP Persia from TripAdvisor. This was my first experience and first visit to Iran with my wife. When I contacted this company through one of this company guy named Rasool, I found him very positive and true. He introduced me an other nice person named Shorab, who was our trip organiser. Our visa was done in 2 days with the help of nice lady Sara. Our whole plan was done as İ discussed with Shorab. Our all hotels in 4 different cities, internal transportation i.e VIP bus, domestic flight and 5 star sleeper train were booked by this guy. We didn't find a single problem anywhere. Special thanks to this guy Shorab. Shorab invited us in his office in Isfahan and served us with tea and other items. We met there the whole team of Tap Persia. We found them hardworking, honest with their work, sincere and busy to serve their clients as much as they can. We spent some hours with Shorab in Isfahan and enjoyed with his hospitality. İ highly recommend this company to all those who wants to visit Iran without any hassles and worries. Our best wishes and prayers are always with this company and all their workers. Such an amazing Iranian travel agency. I have found tappersia on Instagram while searching for things about Iran. This 15 days vacation was something I really wanted to do. How amazing this country and people are. Tappersia is what every foreigner needs, to go to Iran. Good and professional staff, very nice, friendly and helpful all the time. Ara was our first tourist guide in Tehran. He was very nice, polite and kind. Always worried about what we would like to see and about our preferences. He has a good historic and cultural background and he is excellent explaining everything about Iran's culture and history. Ebrahim, our second guide. He is an excellent, kind and sweet person. He has that special feeling about what people need to know and like to see. We immediately felt a strong bond with him. Although he is a very nice and funny person he is also serious and professional when he speaks about Iran and its cultural heritage and history. He did everything to make our stay as nice as possible. Not only he was an excellent driver but an amazing tour guide. We will recommend him to every tourist going to Iran. He could read our minds and understand exactly what we want and what our preferences were. Ali was our third tour guide. He took us to the Kerman desert. In our first contact, we immediately realize he was very good at his job. He also worried about our food preferences and allergies. He showed us all the beauties of the desert - precious peal hidden in Iran. Such a fantastic and professional guide as well. We had a wonderful dinner together. We will remember it. Last but not least Moji. He took us to Persepolis, Necropolis and Pasargard. What an amazing way to end our staying in Iran. He was wonderful telling us about how everything started in these beautiful and ancient places. We could see how thrill he was telling us about all the history. Finally a special thank to Tappersia for every single moment we spent in Iran. These have been for sure one of the most wonderful vacations we could have had. Thank you so much to all of you. Most relaxed holiday thanks to TAP Persia. We came in a troubled time so booked everything through TAP Persia just so that we would feel a bit more secure but the experience was beyond expectations. I have never had a more relaxed holiday. Everything was already booked for us; we had a private car picking us up every time we changed places, offering tours and stops in between all this on a very affordable price and always being there for every question we had. Totally recommended!   Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

I had an amazing time due to the amazing service provided by TAP Persia. Since the first contact Maryam and Rasool were super helpful, willing to explain everything we needed and replying in a very effective manner at all times. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and I strongly recommend them to everyone that wants to have a relaxed yet fun and cultural experience. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Before applying for a visa through TAP Persia, I looked up review's to see if they were trustworthy. The many good reviews almost seemed to be good to be true. But after experiencing their service first hand, I can say that they truly deserve the rating. After payment issues, they went ahead with the process anyways. Without a guarantee or anything. A show of faith from their side shows a great mentality if you ask me. So I'm glad I chose them to arrange the Iranian visa/code. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Best travel agency you can find. I travelled for three months in and had the support of TAP Persia at every step of the way. They took care of my visa, my tourist (credit) card and registered my phone after a month. During my travels I could always call or text them about any issue I had. They booked several bus, train or flight tickets for me on short notice. I also got to meet them in person when I was in Isfahan and became really good friends with them. TAP Persia is the best, most professional and friendliest tourist office you can find. You‘ll be in the best hands and won’t have to worry about a thing. I hope to see them again soon! TAP Persia helped me so much on my first adventure in Iran. I didn’t know where to start, but a friend recommended TAP Persia. Before my arrival staff was on call to help me when my flight was delayed. They were flexible to change the “original” route so I could visit the desert and everything I wanted to see without hustle and at a really good price. I did this on a quite small budget. All guides were great! And when I arrived to Isfahan I went to see the the office of TAP Persia and the wonderful people behind it. I’ll be back soon! Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor

Over the years and despite preferring to do things by myself, I’ve relied and many tour companies on some locations. I’ve chosen TAP Persia and I was not proven wrong. 🙂 paying a lot of money in advance is something I dread, but did. My trust was never misplaced. They helped me with my visa application (that I did in Istanbul), all of my in between cities transportation, hotels and a few guides. The hotels were amazing, the drivers drove good and safe, always kind; the guides super knowledgeable. The few changes I asked for on the ground (a guide where I hadn’t booked one, changes in itinerary, extra space in last train) were done with care and great effort. Never had to beg or insist. I would totally recommend using their services. You are always in contact with them by multiple ways and their representatives are all really nice! Iran is a wonderful destination and TAP Persia does it justice. Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor

Best time to visit iran.

The climate of Iran is mostly arid or semi-arid, with a subtropical climate along the Caspian Coast. Generally, the hottest month is July, the coldest months are December and January, and the wettest month is January. Tourists visit Iran during the summer months (June - September) for the sunshine and regional festivals, and during the winter months (November - March) for skiing.

Culture and customs

Being one of the oldest continuously inhabited civilisations in the world, modern-day Iranian culture is enriched by centuries of tradition. Years of trade, conquest and invasion have created a distinct culture with myriad influences from far and wide, resulting in an overriding national identity and culture rich in symbolism. Religion plays an important part in many aspects of Iranian society - the legal and educational systems, dress, marriage, architecture, the arts and the media are all affected. As Iran is an Islamic nation, visitors can expect to see the hallmarks of Islam throughout Iran; mosques, the call to prayer, strict dress codes and the observance of Ramadan are the most easily noticed, although there is a complex network of rules, customs and traditions at play every day.

Although Iran's population is largely youthful and urban-centric, rich Persian artistic traditions are alive in contemporary Iran, with much of the elaborate architecture, cuisine, handicrafts and popular poetry of Iran having their origins in ancient Persia. Iranian hospitality is world-famous; guests are often touched by the sincerity, politeness and generosity of spirit of their Iranian hosts. Accepting tea and food is considered polite if offered, as is acting graciously and modestly while visiting someone's home.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Iran

1. Dried Fruit & Nuts

Dried apricots, prunes, dates, raisins and figs can be bought from shops, street stalls and bazaars and make wonderful, healthy snacks. Also, you'll be able to find a wide variety of nuts sold by the bag - pistachios, almonds and walnuts are usually the best picks.

2. Persian Ice Cream

Flavoured with orange blossom, rose water, honey, nuts or saffron, Persian ice cream is different to Western-style desserts. Often made with chunks of cream and wedged between two waffles, don’t miss the chance to try this type of sweet treat.

3. Khoresht

This hearty Persian stew can be found everywhere in Iran and has many variations. Meat eaters will love the split-pea and lamb combination, while the eggplant, mushroom and spinach options will delight vegetarians.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with Afghanistan,   Armenia ,   Azerbaijan , Iraq, Pakistan,   Turkey   and   Turkmenistan , Iran is located in the southwest corner of Asia. The Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman provide shoreline in the north and south, and while Iran lacks a major river system, there are several small rivers and streams throughout the country. Much of Iran’s terrain is mountainous, with most of the population living in the basins, plateaus and plains. The deserts of Iran are mainly uninhabited, with the exception of a few oases, while the major cities are quite modern, with well-developed infrastructure and housing.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Iran was known as Persia for hundreds of years and has been occupied by people for many centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests that people populated the land here as long as 7,000 years ago, with civilisations and societies developing as the surrounding nations and areas evolved. Persia's fate was very much tied up with the destinies of neighbouring countries, so as empires rose and fell (and leaders came and went), Persia was affected by invasions and confrontations with the Greeks, Mongols, Romans, Arabs, Turks and others.

Under the reign of Darius the Great and Cyrus the Great (during the Achaemenid Empire), the Persian Empire expanded to be the largest empire of the time. During this period, coins were first introduced as a form of currency, building works on Persepolis began and a system of far-reaching highways and canals were built. Islam was brought to Persia around 637 AD; the population slowly adopted the religion and by the 11th century, the majority of the population was practising Islam. Despite adopting the religion of the conquerors, Persian culture, style and art was largely preserved, which led to the 'Islamic Golden Age' - a time when Persian literature, philosophy, science and art blossomed (750-1258).

This time of creativity and prosperity was brought to an end by the Mongols, who invaded in 1219. This invasion proved devastating, with a monumental loss of culture occurring due to the widespread demolition of infrastructure, libraries and mosques. Famine and violence accounted for a steep decline in population, which was worsened by the arrival of the Plague during the 14th century. Persia was in better shape by the 16th century, with the Safavid Dynasty (1502-1736) establishing the modern nation-state of Iran.

Recent history

The Great Persian Famine of 1870 and 1871 accounted for up to 2 million deaths in the region, but Iran's fortunes changed with the discovery of oil in 1908. This discovery also increased interest from other nations wishing to capitalise on this precious commodity. Iran endured many changes in leadership due to invasions and coups during the 1940s, 50s and 60s, leading to the Iranian Revolution. The Iranian Revolution (also known as the Islamic Revolution) took place between 1978 and 1979 and resulted in the birth of the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Khomeini served as leader until his death in 1989, after enduring the Iran-Iraq war, which was waged between 1980 and 1988. The Iraqi use of chemical warfare during this time caused international fury and led to the deaths of many of Iran's people.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and Events in Iran

Also known as Persian New Year, this is one of the most important traditional holidays on the Iranian calendar. Heralding the advent of spring, this celebration with Zoroastrianism roots is a time of feasting with family, celebrating in nature, springcleaning the home and purchasing flowers and new clothes for the New Year. Many different types of rituals are performed during this time and can vary from family to family, area to area.

Ramadan and Eid

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Iran and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iran?

Note: This information is under review due to the current situation in the country.

Most foreign visitors require a visa to enter Iran. Please be aware that this can be a frustrating and stressful process, and can take from 6-8 weeks. You will need to allow sufficient time for this and plan any other travel around your Iran trip accordingly. The cost of a visa also varies depending on your nationality and also changes regularly, making it hard for us to advise of the actual cost. But you should plan for it to cost somewhere around 100-180 EUR depending if you get a visa before departure or on arrival.

Iranian visas are issued in a two-step process and this will differ according to your nationality.

  • An authorisation code for your visa must be issued by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • A visa for your passport must then be obtained at an Iranian Embassy once the authorisation code has been issued, or on arrival (depending on your nationality).

If you are travelling on a UK, USA or CANADIAN passport, please be aware that your visa process can take longer due to government regulations. Please check that you will have sufficient time to obtain a visa before departure.

We are not currently operating in Iran and, therefore not facilitating/processing authorisation code applications at this time.

Everywhere you look in Iran, there are reminders of the rich history and vibrant traditions of the Persian Empire, from the remains of King Darius’ palace at Persepolis to the Zoroastrian ‘Towers of Silence’ in Yazd. Our Iran tours and holidays highlight some of the finest ancient architecture found anywhere in the world. Isfahan was described as “half the world” and with its stunning mosques, bridges and squares it’s not difficult to see why. Other architectural highlights include the intricately carved domes and madrasas of Shiraz and the ingenious wind towers of Yazd. With 21, it is home to the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites for Culture in the Middle East.

Contrary to the media perception of Iran, the country has always been outward-looking and has a long history of learning and poetry. Visiting the tomb of Hafez in Shiraz you will find old and young gathered to pay tribute and to read his words of love and wine. Travellers on our Iran tours are invariably overwhelmed by the friendliness and hospitality of the people, and it is the one thing our guests comment on again and again – how welcome they were made to feel. This is a country with a strong cultural heart and a long tradition of Persian hospitality.

Iran’s capital of Tehran is a bustling contemporary city with luxury retail outlets, fashionable restaurants and modern skyscrapers, while the ancient cities of Shiraz, Yazd and Isfahan offer a more traditional Persian experience, with their winding streets, coffee shops, peaceful gardens and impressive mosques. Iran is a very youthful country, with over 65% of the population being under 35, and in the cities, you will find locals pushing the dress code as far as they can. In the countryside meanwhile, you will find a more conservative but equally welcoming Iran.

Highlights of rural Iran include the Bavanat valley, a beautiful and fertile region of apple orchards, walnut forests and alpine scenery, which is a great place to experience a homestay. Journeying north to the shores of the Caspian Sea is the perfect antidote to the frenetic pace of city life, where you can explore “assassins’’ castles”, the striking Alborz mountains, pretty towns including Bandar-e-Anzali (famous for its caviar fishery) and meet nomadic people. Head east for the Lut Desert, where you can discover ancient Zoroastrian cave dwellings, forgotten strongholds and vast landscapes containing a timeless beauty.

Although it may receive headlines in the media, there is so much more to Iran than what is seen on the frontpage. It’s a nation of fabulous cultural wealth and historical significance whose people are friendly, and rightly proud of their long heritage. Why not step off the tourist trail for your holiday, and experience all that the country has to offer with Wild Frontiers group and tailor-made Iran holidays. Read our guide to visiting Iran, including information about obtaining visas, safety, dress code and FCO advice.

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Being an Islamic Republic, Iran has a dress code for women by law that applies everywhere outside your hotel bedroom. Please note the advice given on this in the “packing list” section that follows. Note that in many mosques we visit it will be necessary to remove your shoes before entering. Women will sometimes be required to wear a chador at holy sites and this will be provided where necessary. In some mosques there are separate areas for men and women which should also be respected.

Language & Religion

The official national language is Persian, also referred to as Farsi, of which its oldest records date back to the Persian Empire of the 6th Century BC.

The large majority of the population are Islamic and belong to the Shi’a branch of Islam, which is the official state religion. There are minority groups of Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians.

Time

Iran is 3.5 hours ahead of GMT. A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

As an Islamic Republic almost, all alcohol is banned in Iran. The import, sale, manufacture and consumption of alcohol in Iran is strictly forbidden on religious grounds, with the only exceptions for certain recognised Iranian religious minorities (NB. not foreigners).  Penalties can be severe so do not attempt to bring alcohol into the country or try to buy it during your trip.

In Iran you will find the meals are mainly rice-based and that shashlik (kebab) is very popular, with lamb and chicken widely served. Many varied salads are also available, along with some tasty stews of meat, vegetables and pulses. Picnics are also a popular Iranian pastime.

Travelling Solo In Iran

All of our   small group tours   are designed to cater for   solo travellers : the number of solo travellers will vary from tour to tour, but usually over half will be travelling alone. Get all of the excitement of discovering new places combined with the security of travelling with an organised group, with like minded people.

Day 1: Tehran(Arrival Day)

Our group tour commences this evening in the bustling city of Tehran. After our welcome meeting, there is the opportunity to sample Iran’s famous fare. A great start to a fantastic tour of Iran!

After some hours of rest in the hotel, we start our day at the National Museum of Iran where we get a crash course in Iran’s rich history – this will lay the groundwork for the rest of our trip! We’ll also visit the newly refurbished Museum of the Islamic Period where we’ll see arts and antiquities from the Islamic period, including calligraphy and textiles. After lunch, get ready to witness one of Tehran’s biggest drawcards – the National Jewellery Museum. Located in the National Bank vault, this collection of crowns, tiaras, and precious gems was amassed by the Iranian Royal family from the 16th century onwards and is, quite simply jaw-dropping.

The Sa'dabad Complex

The Sa'dabad Complex (Persian: مجموعه سعدآباد‎ – Majmue ye Sa’dābād) is a 300 hectare complex built by the Qajar and Pahlavi monarchs, located in Shemiran, Greater Tehran, Iran. Today, the official residence of the President of Iran is located adjacent to

Tohid Tunnel

Tohid (or Towheed) Tunnel is a tunnel in Tehran, Iran, the third longest urban tunnel in the Middle East.

Day 2: Tehran

Our focus this morning is on the sprawling Golestan Palace compound located in the heart and historic center of Tehran. This is one of the oldest compounds in Tehran and was originally built during the Safavid Dynasty. Not far from the palace is the Grand Bazaar of Tehran. Described as a city within a city the bazaar here is known to have been an area of trade for more than a thousand years (although the oldest walls and buildings still here are only around 400 years of age). All this walking means we’ll need to refuel, so we’ll follow the Tehranis to a popular local spot for some lunch. Iran is known for its carpets, so no visit to Tehran would be complete without a visit to the Carpet Museum to see some of the countries finest examples. This evening we’ll stroll the Tabiat Bridge and find dinner overlooking two of the cities finest parks.

Day 3: Tehran-Hamadan

Early leaving Tehran behind this morning, we make our way to the ancient city of Ecbatana (modern-day Hamadan) Visiting the sights in Hamedan like Hegmatane, MourdKhai Temple, based on time and clients' flexibility Ganjname can be added to the plan.

Overnight, you stay in the hotel in Hamedan.

Day 4: Hamedan-Kermanshah-Hamedan

We start our day with a visit to the UNESCO Heritage site of Taq-e Boston. These bas-relief carvings are some of the best surviving from the Sassanid era and feature royal hunting scenes, backed by elephants. Later we’ll visit the site of Bisotun, featuring more bas-relief carvings, dating from 521BC. (for this day, the sights are Taq-e-Bostan, Bisetoun, and Kangavar again based on time and clients' flexibility, if needed one can be omitted for their comfortability) It is almost 3 hours between these 2 cities so we have to manage the time. Overnight in Hamedan.

Day 5: Hamedan – Kashan

Kashan is such a beautiful, laid-back city that we thought it the perfect place to spend an extra night and explore the surrounding area.sMove to Kashan to visit Abyaneh village & Broojerdiha and Tabatabaie Houses, Fin Garden, and Aghabozorg Mosque in Kashan. Overnight in Kashan

Day 6: Kashan-Isfahan

Esfahan! This is, without a doubt, the most visually stunning city in Iran.

There’s was a 16th-century rhyme that went “Esfahan nesf-e Jahan”, which means Esfahan is half the world. While perhaps not so geographically accurate, it is certainly true that the former capital of the Persian Empire is certainly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We’ll begin our exploration with the Masjed-e Jahmeh, a perfect example of 800 years of different Islamic architectural styles. Next, we’ll visit the only surviving palace of the royal precinct, Chehel Sotun, before making our way to Naqshe-e Jahan Square, the second-largest square in the world and one that has changed little since its construction in 1602. After lunch we’ll take a peek inside the Bazaar-e Bozorg (Grand Bazaar), exploring its labyrinthine alleyways shopping for handicrafts. Later this evening, once the sun has set, we’ll make like the local Esfahanis and stroll across the bridge of 33 arches, Pol Si-e-She.

Day 7: Isfahan

We’ll start our day with a visit to Jolfa, the city's Armenian Quarter, and its’ magnificent Vank Cathedral. Later we’ll make our way back to Imam Square where we can relax in a traditional teahouse, before visiting what can be considered the pinnacle of Persian Islamic architecture – the Masjed-e Sheike Lotfollah and the Masjed-e Shah. These two mosques can help but make a lasting impression.

Day 8: Esfahan - Shiraz

Shiraz. The capital during the Zand Dynasty (1747 – 79), Shiraz was one of the most important cities in the medieval Islamic world and is still considered to be the center of Persian culture. It’s said that Iranian homes have two books, the Quran and a collection of poems by the poet Hafez. A city of poets, Shiraz is known as a city of learning and poetry, and of course, it is perhaps most famous for the wine it is no longer able to produce.

On the way, you will have a stop to visit Persepolis. We must say that Persepolis is one of the most jaw-dropping sites we’ve encountered on our travels. This city embodies the pinnacle of Darius the Great’s Achaemenid Empire, but it also represents its ultimate demise at the hands of Alexander the Great. The extensive ruins here are marvelously well preserved and you’re unlikely to encounter such extensive and well-preserved bas-relief carvings anywhere else in the region.

Day 10: Shiraz

One of Shiraz’s most well-known sites (and definitely its most photographed!), is the Masjed-e Nasir al-Molk, more commonly known as the Pink Mosque. We’ll visit in the morning as the sun streams through the stained glass windows, filling the space with a kaleidoscope of rainbow light. Later we’ll visit the tombs of the poets Hafez and Saadi and you’ll see the poetic sway they hold on Iranian’s hearts with the many people who make a pilgrimage to their graves. After lunch we’ll return to the city's historical center, visiting the Masjed-e Vakil, the well-preserved hammam Vakil (bathhouse), and then we enter the wide vaulted brick avenues of the Bazaar-e Vakil.

Long considered an important stop on the trade routes, Yazd is a charmingly fascinating desert city. According to UNESCO, the old town of Yazd is one of the oldest in the world and today you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you wander the maze of historic lanes.

Today, we’ll visit the Towers of Silence, a once-sacred site where the bodies of deceased Zoroastrians were offered to the earth. Yazd is also the home to Ateshkadeh, a Zoroastrian Fire Temple where the flame has reportedly been burning since 470AD.

Amir Chakhmaq Complex. Here in the desert, it can be difficult to believe that there is any water to be found, but this afternoon we’ll visit the Yazd Water Museum to find out how qanats (water channels) were dug to supply water for drinking and irrigation.

  • Do I have to travel on certain dates? Because all of our trips are tailor-made, you can depart on any date you wish (depending on flights) and for as long as you wish. The itineraries provided on our website are suggestions only and you can change any aspect to suit your tastes and budget. Your destination specialist will be able to provide advice and answer your questions.
  • Will I be travelling as part of a group? No, our tailor-made trips are arranged on an individual basis. This means you are not tied to the wishes of a group and can arrange your itinerary at your own pace. If you are interested in a Group Tour, we do offer a range of departures in small groups of up to 16 people.
  • Isn’t it easier and cheaper to arrange the holiday myself? Many of our clients like the independence that tailor-made travel brings, without the 'regimentation' of organized group tours, but with the reassurance of our professional planning and back-up services. For example, if the flight that we've booked is delayed, it's down to us to re-arrange your travel in the country. When things go wrong, an independent traveller may find themselves putting in a good deal of time re-organising their plans, when they should be enjoying the trip. We also regularly hear from travellers claiming that they can independently organise the same trip for a lower price. Almost invariably it is not 'like for like' and they may find they incur much more expense during their travels.

This shall be paid upon visa collection at the Iranian Consulate where you collect the visa.

  • Iran Visa Application Process

In compliance with the regulations set forth by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a Tourist visa is granted to foreign nationals who wish to travel to Iran either independently, as part of a group, or to visit friends and relatives.

This visa allows for a maximum stay of 90 days, with the possibility of extensions within Iran, and remains valid for a period of 3 months from the date of issuance. Depending on your nationality and the consulate you approach, you have the option to submit your documents and obtain a visa after a few days without requiring a reference from Iran. Alternatively, you can apply through the new e-visa system. However, this process may prove time-consuming or unproductive, especially when applying from outside your home country.

Most consulates typically require an authorization letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran, a crucial step in the visa application process. Once you have obtained this authorization code, the remaining steps are relatively straightforward, and you can usually receive your visa within 1 or 2 days.

While an Entry (Business) visa is an option, it necessitates an invitation letter from your Iranian host. It’s important to note that opting for a tourist visa provides the advantage of enjoying special tourist rates with hotels and other accommodations.

Step 1 : Complete the Application Form

Your submitted data will be used to generate a formal application sent to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, granting authorization to the consulate for visa issuance. It’s crucial to ensure the accuracy of the details entered, as they must align with your passport information and the documents you will later submit to the consulate for visa collection.

Step 2 : Payment

Upon submission of your application, you will be provided with the service bill and payment instructions. It’s important to note that this charge is separate from the visa fee required for the consulate to stamp your passport in Step 4.

Step 3 : Obtaining the Visa Grant Notice

Upon completion, you will receive an authorization letter, referred to as the Visa Grant Notice, which will be sent to the Iranian Consulate or airport specified in your application form. You will be provided with both the visa code and a visa grant notice document, allowing you to retrieve your visa. Please note that this code is exclusively valid for the designated consulate and only for a duration of 2 or 3 months from the date of issue. If needed, you can request us to forward it to another consulate for an additional charge.

Iran Visa Grant Notice

Step 4 :  Visa Collection

With the reference code in hand, proceed to the consulate accompanied by your passport (valid for the next 6 months), the completed visa application form (available for pickup at the consulate or downloadable from their website), 2 recent passport-sized photos (sometimes not required), the applicable visa fee (subject to your nationality), and the authorization reference code. Always ensure to verify the specific document requirements with the consulate, as variations may exist from one consulate to another. Additionally, explore the possibility of submitting the documents by mail and receiving the visa through this method. For further information, please reach out to the consulate directly. You can access a directory of all Iranian consulates here .

Step 5. Arrival in Iran

Congratulations! You are now free to enter Iran!

Please share your feedback with us regarding the visa collection process. Let us know if it was straightforward or if you encountered any challenges. In the event of any issues, rest assured that we will stand by you to resolve them until you successfully obtain your visa. We greatly value the feedback provided by our clients, as it helps us enhance our services. Even during your travels within Iran, we remain at your disposal. Feel free to reach out for any questions, assistance, or additional services you may require. Should you wish to extend your visa, you can make such arrangements through the Police Department of Foreign Aliens Affairs when in any major Iranian city. Safe travels!

How You Take a Tour to Iran from Australia

Tour-to-Iran-from-Australia

Millions of Australians travel the world each year, but some hesitate if they can take a tour to Iran from Australia or not. Some are reluctant to do so. For many people across the world, not only Aussies, Iran is a mysterious country to visit. Of course, this makes me wonder, “Aren’t they adventurers? So, why aren’t they travel to Iran?” Maybe one reason is they aren’t sure how they can plan such a trip. This post and its video explains challenges, benefits, and advantages involved.

It’s Easy to Plan a Tour to Iran from Australia

It could be quite challenging if you decide to plan all aspects of your journey yourself. Let me explain this:

The hotels in Iran aren’t members of any international online booking systems. They don’t even have their own online booking systems for the foreign travelers. Therefore, you cannot book them ahead of time yourselves. For your information, to reserve certain number of rooms in Iranian hotels during a given time (particularly in high season) is quite challenging for the tour operators too! The reason is there aren’t sufficient number of hotels and how late they confirm the bookings, if they do.

The transportation service providers aren’t so well-organized that you could contact them online and book your required service. They’re not a member of online booking services either. Tour guides and restaurants are also same. Tourist visa services, as of today, haven’t been organized to facilitate the required process for you yet. Even if one or few of the above join the international online services, other challenges will remain as they are.

So, what’s the solution?

Get all the above done through tour operators! They are the ones who are in contract with all these service providers. They are the sole entities who can book all the services for you and you pay only one company to do all this for you. In addition, a tour operator can suggest you a tour itinerary, explain the detailed day-to-day sightseeing and even apply for your visas .

What To See during Your Visit in Iran?

A lot of people contact us from your country and ask what they can experience if they take a tour to Iran from Australia.

Well, Aussies travel to explore the world and Iran has got a lot to offer. Monuments, Nature & Gardens, Bazaars and Culture are the highlights:

It’s a historically rich country that offers you lots of world class sites including more than a dozen of UNESCO sites , historical monuments that will soon join World Heritage Sites, and more. They range from ancient cities, palaces, temples, museums, to Islamic architecture at its best as Iran is a country that had contributed a lot to the formation of Islamic architecture.

It’s a naturally diverse country in which you can enjoy varied landscapes ranging from desolate deserts to high mountains (Damavand peak is up to 5671 meters above sea level). You will see from hot and dry areas (Lut desert reaching 73 degrees Celsius in summer) to highly humid and green places (Sari & Rasht reaching 99% humidity), etc. You can explore caves, mangroves, sand dunes, and so on.

The people of Iran are the main reason many will remember the country years after their visit to Iran. They come from:

  • Various ethnic groups (Persians, Azeries, Kurds, Baluchies, Gilakies, Turkomans,  Arabs, Lurs, etc)
  • Various language groups (speaking Persian, Kurdish, Azeri, Lurish, Arabic, etc), and
  • Various types of culture, ceremonies, etc.

Most important of them all, they are all very hospitable and willing to welcome you, serve you and make friends with you. Iranians are quite easy to connect to you and often times they are the ones who would come forward to welcome you to their country. I’m sure you will find this exceptionally incredible when you take a tour to Iran from Australia and find out how happy people are to see you.

Iran is a Secure Place … No Doubt about It!

If you think Iran isn’t safe enough to travel to due the some reasons, I must tell you its’ all myth. You can go to the Testimonial page and read or watch what previous tourists has said about Iran.

I remember some said in 2003, there’s some war going on in Iraq. We shouldn’t go to Iran! Several people have visited Iran since then and this war still continues in Iraq, but it hasn’t hurt any travelers. Guess who lives life fully? Those who rely on real sources that could be real people with real reviews!

One of the reasons why tourism is booming in Iran is the fact that Iran is a safe place unlike Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, etc. Those are all beautiful countries, but unfortunately they’re not secure anymore.

Another reason why Iran is making contracts with lots of international companies these days is the fact that the world has understood Iran’s realities and social media spreads the news about how safe a country it is for tourists.

How Long Should You Travel in Iran

Australians come from a long distance to this part of the world. Therefore, I don’t recommend them to come for a one-week visit. Iran is large enough and the varieties are vast enough to keep you interested during every single day of your two-week tour. So, if not longer, plan for traveling two weeks inside Iran.

In Destination Iran, we’ve planned two tours for such a time period:

  • Iran Classical Tour : If you want to see the highlights of Iran (Tehran, Shiraz and Esfahan), plus some desert landscape, desert architecture and so on, this can be the plan for your tour to Iran from Australia.
  • Iran In-Depth Tour : If you want to see the highlights of Iran (Tehran, Shiraz and Esfahan), plus cities and sites playing major roles in the formation of ancient Iran (like Medes and Elamites), this tour takes you to the ancient temples, off the tourist routes, huge farms and high mountains.

… and if you are looking for a custom tour in which you meet more with the people, try their food and learn how they’re cooking, etc, please contact me and we will work on your ideal tour to make a package as you desire it to be.

Advice levels

Do not travel to Iran.

Do not travel to Iran as there's a high risk you could be arbitrarily detained or arrested.

  • An increased threat of military and terrorist attacks against Israel and Israeli interests across the region and ongoing military action in the Occupied Palestinian Territories could lead to increased tensions in other locations in the Middle East.
  • Regional tensions are high, and the security situation could deteriorate quickly with little or no notice. In an attack or other armed conflict, you should follow the advice of local authorities. See our general advice on protecting your safety ( There’s an armed conflict ).
  • Increased tensions in the Middle East may result in airspace closures, flight cancellations and diversions and other travel disruptions.
  • Dependants of Australian officials in Iran have been offered voluntary departure to return to Australia.
  • Demonstrations and protests are expected. Small, localised protests continue in parts of Iran. Previously, security forces' response to protests has been severe, and many protesters and bystanders have been injured, killed or detained. There has been an increase in the number of foreign nationals arrested during previous protests. Avoid all demonstrations and protests.
  • Terrorist attacks could happen anywhere in Iran, including Tehran or other locations frequented by foreigners and tourists. They could occur at any time with little or no warning. Avoid possible targets and areas with a low level of security. Possible targets for attacks include embassies, hotels, places of worship, tourist sites, government interests, military parades and locations, Western businesses and other interests. Take official warnings seriously.
  • Australians, including dual nationals, should strongly consider leaving Iran as soon as possible. Foreigners in Iran, including Australians, are at a high risk of arbitrary detention or arrest. Foreign and dual nationals have been detained without due process of law. Iran does not recognise dual nationality. Our ability to provide consular support to dual Australian-Iranian nationals is extremely limited. We can't guarantee access to consular services or legal representation if you're detained or arrested.
  • There are ongoing disruptions to telecommunications services, including mobile internet access.
  • Regional tensions are high and could escalate rapidly. There is ongoing hostility between Iran and Israel, and military tensions between Iran, the US and other countries in the Middle East. The Iran-Iraq, Iran-Afghanistan, and Iran-Pakistan border areas are extremely dangerous.
  • Regional and international politics can trigger protests. These may target Western or UN diplomatic missions. Avoid vigils, marches, demonstrations and large public gatherings, as they can turn violent without warning.
  • Kidnapping for ransom can occur. Foreign nationals have also been the target of kidnapping. Drug traffickers and bandits are active in the Afghanistan and Pakistan border areas. They often clash violently with security forces. Bombings and shootings occur. Be alert to your surroundings, especially at night. Outside these areas, the level of violent crime is low.
  • Women can face unwanted attention and harassment. If you're a woman, take care when travelling alone, particularly at night.

Full travel advice:  Safety

  • Outbreaks of insect borne diseases such as malaria, tick-borne encephalitis and leishmaniasis occur. Use insect and mosquito repellent.
  • HIV/AIDS is a risk. Take precautions if you engage in high-risk activities.
  • Waterborne, foodborne, parasitic and other infectious diseases occur. These include cholera, typhoid and hepatitis. Drink only boiled or bottled water. Avoid raw or undercooked food.
  • Significant air pollution occurs in major cities. Sandstorms and dust storms happen often. Get medical advice if you have allergies or breathing difficulties.

Full travel advice:  Health

  • Don't use, carry or import illegal drugs. Punishments for drug offences are severe. They include the death penalty.
  • Get professional advice if you're involved in local legal proceedings. In particular, seek advice on matters of family law, such as divorce, child custody and child support.
  • Same-sex relations are illegal for both men and women. Penalties include corporal punishment and death.
  • Iran has strict codes of dress and behaviour. Women are required by law to wear a headscarf and loose-fitting clothing covering their arms and legs. Men face fewer clothing restrictions but should avoid shorts and sleeveless t-shirts. Close contact between unmarried men and women is illegal, as is being in a de facto relationship. This is particularly the case for interactions between Muslims and non-Muslims. It's against the law to behave in a way that offends Islam, such as encouraging a Muslim to convert.
  • Be careful when taking photos. It's illegal to photograph military or government sites, critical civil infrastructure and public protests. It's illegal to use drones without authorisation.
  • Iran has strict importation laws. You can't import alcohol, pornography, pork products or short-wave radios. It's also illegal to import printed or recorded Western materials, including religious material. Get permission to bring in electronics, such as satellite phones, GPS trackers and walkie-talkies.

Full travel advice:  Local laws

  • We advise Australians not to travel to Iran. If you're in Iran, you should strongly consider leaving as soon as possible. If despite our advice you travel to Iran, you'll need a visa to enter and you'll need to get it before you travel. Contact your nearest  Iranian embassy  for details.
  • Airlines may cancel or reduce their operations into and out of Iran at short notice.
  • Some countries have restrictions on travellers coming out of Iran.
  • If your passport contains Israeli stamps or visas, Iranian authorities will refuse you entry.
  • If you overstay your visa in Iran for any reason, even one beyond your control, you'll incur a fine. The Australian Government cannot pay this fine for you. You must also apply for an exit visa. You can get more information on Iranian visa and exit permit requirements from the Iranian Passport Police Office or Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Most Australian travel insurance policies won't cover you for travel to Iran. You'll need a specialised policy.
  • The local currency is the Iranian Rial (IRR). Declare any foreign currency you have when you arrive in Iran or authorities may confiscate it when you leave. You can exchange major currencies in all big cities. You can't use international credit or bank cards. You can't transfer money using commercial banks or money transfer companies. Bring enough cash to cover your stay.

Full advice

Civil unrest and political tension.

Protests and demonstrations are expected. Some airlines may cancel flights at short notice - check with your airline. Australian embassy staff and their families in Tehran have been advised to stay close to home and avoid protest areas.

In late 2022 and early 2023, there were widespread protests across many cities and towns in Iran. Previously, security forces' response to protests has been severe, and many protesters and bystanders have been injured, killed or detained. During past protest periods, there have been increases in the number of foreign nationals arrested. You should avoid all protest activity.

Political developments in the region and local political tensions can trigger protests, demonstrations and vigils.

Public protests and events that draw large groups of people can potentially turn violent.

Iranians sometimes protest against some Western and Middle East embassies and UN missions.

To protect yourself during periods of unrest:

  • avoid demonstrations, protests, large crowds and vigils
  • do not photograph demonstrations, protests, large crowds or vigils
  • monitor media for possible threats
  • plan activities to avoid disruption on national or commemorative days
  • follow the advice of local authorities
  • share your itinerary with family and friends and keep in close contact so they know where you are.

Be prepared to change your plans in case of disruptions.

If civil unrest disrupts transport, ask your airline, travel agent or insurer for help.

More information:

  • Demonstrations and civil unrest

Risk of arbitrary detention or arrest

Travellers in Iran, including Australians, are at a high risk of arbitrary detention or arrest. A number of Australians, including dual nationals, have been detained in Iran without due process of law.

There's been an increase in the number of foreign nationals being arrested or detained in Iran.

You may be at greater risk of detention if authorities are suspicious of your activities or background. You could attract the attention of authorities if you:

  • study or do other academic activity
  • travel outside tourist areas
  • are near crowds, demonstrations or sensitive sites
  • take photos, except in major tourist sites
  • have contact with Iranians who are of interest to authorities
  • behave or express views perceived as anti-Iranian, anti-Iranian Government, or that could cause religious offence
  • are affiliated with, or have links to, Iranian opposition or other political groups.

Iran does not recognise dual nationality. If you're a dual Australian-Iranian national and are detained in Iran, our ability to provide consular support is extremely limited.

The Australian Government may not be notified if you're detained. We can't guarantee consular access to any Australian detained or arrested. We also can't guarantee access to legal representation.

If you're in Iran, you should leave immediately.

  • Advice for dual nationals
  • Fact sheet: Arrested or jailed overseas

Security situation

Regional tensions are high, and the security situation could deteriorate quickly with little or no notice. This may also result in airspace closures, flight cancellations, flight diversions, and other travel disruptions.

The security situation in Iran remains volatile. Tensions in the region are high and may escalate further, due to ongoing hostility between Iran and Israel, and military tensions between Iran, the US, and other countries in the Middle East.

If despite our advice you go to Iran, or decide to stay there, monitor media for possible threats and take extra precautions for your safety:

  • keep a low profile.
  • keep in contact with family and friends
  • don't travel alone or at night
  • check routes before you travel
  • don't put your travel or other plans on social media
  • work with only reliable, registered and authorised organisations and travel agencies
  • don't carry large amounts of cash

Airlines may cancel or reduce their operations to and from Iran at short notice.  If tensions escalate, your options to leave may be limited. The Australian Government may not be able to assist with your departure. Check the latest flight status with your airline or travel provider and make arrangements in case you can’t leave. Share those plans with family and friends.

Iranian authorities are active in and closely monitor border areas with Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The security situation within 10km of the Iran-Iraq border is extremely dangerous.

Do not visit military or nuclear sites; these are not always clearly marked. Follow the advice of local authorities and monitor the media.

A terrorist attack could happen anywhere in Iran at any time, including in Tehran.

In January 2024, at least 84 people were killed and more than 200 wounded in suicide bombing attacks in Kerman, southern Iran, carried out by Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP).

On 26 October 2022, a terrorist attack on the Shah Cheragh Shrine in Shiraz killed at least 14 people and injured 40 others.

Possible targets for attacks include:

  • places of worship
  • tourist sites
  • government interests
  • military parades and locations
  • Western businesses and other interests

To stay safe from terrorist risks:

  • be alert to possible threats throughout the country
  • avoid places where there is a low level of security and possible target areas
  • monitor the media for new threats
  • report suspicious activity or items to police
  • take official warnings seriously
  • follow the instructions of local authorities

If there's an attack:

  • leave the area as soon as it's safe
  • avoid the affected area in case of secondary attacks

Terrorism is a threat worldwide.

Kidnapping for ransom is a risk in Iran. Foreign nationals have been targeted. The kidnapping risk is heightened in the border areas with Afghanistan and Pakistan, including in the area east of Bam, Jask, and the Sistan and Baluchestan provinces. Drug traffickers and bandits are active in these regions.

Kidnapping happens with political, ideological and criminal motives. Targets have included foreigners.

Always be alert to your personal security and surroundings.

To protect yourself from kidnapping:

  • seek professional security advice
  • arrange effective personal safety measures
  • be alert to possible threats
  • change your daily routines and patterns of travel

The Australian Government's longstanding policy is that it doesn't make payments or concessions to kidnappers.

Violent crime

The level of violent crime in Iran is generally low, but petty crime is increasing due to the worsening economic situation.

Drug traffickers and bandits are active in the border areas near Afghanistan and Pakistan. This includes:

  • Sistan and Baluchestan province
  • east of the city of Bam in Kerman province

Violent incidents often occur in these areas, such as:

  • clashes between security forces and drug traffickers

Travel at night in these areas is particularly dangerous.

Be alert to your surroundings, especially at night. Don't draw unwanted attention to yourself.

Petty crime

There have been increasing reports of thieves in passing vehicles snatching bags from pedestrians, home break-ins and robberies.

Women can face unwanted attention and harassment. Women  should take care travelling alone, particularly at night.

Scams and fraud

Men may approach foreigners and claim to be plain-clothes police. They say they're looking for foreign drug dealers and ask to see wallets and ID.

If this happens, it could be a scam . Ask a uniformed police officer for help.

Cyber security

You may be at risk of cyber-based threats during overseas travel to any country. Digital identity theft is a growing concern. Your devices and personal data can be compromised, especially if you’re connecting to Wi-Fi, using or connecting to shared or public computers, or to Bluetooth.

Social media can also be risky in destinations where there are social or political tensions, or laws that may seem unreasonable by Australian standards. Travellers have been arrested for things they have said on social media. Don't comment on local or political events on your social media.

Cyber security when travelling overseas

Climate and natural disasters

Earthquakes and severe weather occur in Iran.

If a natural disaster happens:

  • secure your passport in a safe, waterproof location
  • monitor local media
  • keep in contact with your friends and family

Earthquakes

Iran experiences frequent earthquakes . There have been several major earthquakes in recent years.

Aftershocks often follow a major earthquake. They can cause further damage to already weakened structures.

Register with the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System to receive alerts on major disasters.

Severe weather

Iran experiences extremely high temperatures.

The temperature in some areas can reach over 50˚C in July and August, the hottest months of the year.

Some regions have heavy snowfall during winter.

Sandstorms and dust storms occur regularly.

Widespread flash flooding affected large parts of Iran in March-April 2019, causing a number of deaths.

Travel insurance

If despite our advice you plan to travel to Iran, you'll need a specialised travel insurance policy that covers travel to high-risk destinations. Most Australian policies won't cover you for travel to Iran. Check that Iran is not excluded from your cover because of sanctions.

Your policy needs to cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation. If you're not insured, you may have to pay many thousands of dollars up-front for medical care. The Australian Government won't pay for any costs or organise evacuation.

If you can't get travel insurance , you should not travel.

Physical and mental health

Consider your physical and mental health before you travel, especially if you have an existing medical condition.

See your doctor or travel clinic to:

  • have a basic health check-up
  • ask if your travel plans may affect your health
  • plan any vaccinations you need

Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

  • General health advice
  • Healthy holiday tips  (Healthdirect Australia)

Medications

Not all medication available over the counter or by prescription in Australia is available in other countries. Some may even be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by an Australian doctor.

Some specialised medicines are in short supply in Iran.

If you plan to bring medication, check if it's legal in Iran. Take enough legal medicine for your trip.

Carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating:

  • what the medicine is
  • your required dosage
  • that it's for personal use

Health risks

Medical evacuation may be difficult.

Insect-borne diseases

Malaria is endemic outside the major towns in Iran's south and west.

Other insect-borne diseases are common, including:

  • leishmaniasis
  • tick-borne encephalitis

Ticks are most active in spring, summer and autumn.

To protect yourself from disease:

  • ensure your accommodation is insect-proof
  • use insect repellent
  • wear long, loose, light-coloured clothing
  • consider taking medicine to prevent malaria

Get medical advice if you have a fever, muscle pain, rash or severe headache.

Infectious diseases

HIV/AIDS is a risk.

Take precautions if you engage in activities that may expose you to the virus.

Other health risks

Waterborne, foodborne, parasitic and other infectious diseases occur, such as:

  • tuberculosis

Serious outbreaks sometimes occur.

To protect yourself from illness:

  • drink boiled water or bottled water with sealed lids
  • avoid ice cubes
  • avoid raw and undercooked food, such as salads

Get medical help if you have a fever or diarrhoea.

Air pollution

Significant air pollution occurs in major cities. Sandstorms and dust storms occur regularly.

Get medical advice if you have allergies or breathing difficulties.

Medical care

Medical facilities.

The standard of medical facilities varies. Facilities in remote areas are extremely limited.

If you become seriously ill or injured, you'll need to be evacuated to a place with better facilities, such as London or Dubai. Medical evacuation can be very expensive and may not be possible.

Medical tourism

Medical tourism including for cosmetic operations is common in Iran. The standard of medical service providers can vary. If you're considering getting medical treatment in Iran, you should research and choose your medical service providers carefully. Serious post-surgery complications and deaths have occurred.

You should discuss your plans with your Australian doctor or specialist before committing to getting procedures done in Iran.

You're subject to all local laws and penalties, including those that may appear harsh by Australian standards. Research local laws before travelling.

If you're arrested or jailed, the Australian Government will do what it can to help you under our Consular Services Charter . But we can't get you out of trouble or out of jail.

Iran does not recognise dual nationality. If you're an Australian citizen with Iranian nationality, our ability to provide consular assistance is extremely limited.

Penalties for importing and possessing drugs are severe and include the death penalty.

Authorities have executed foreigners for drug-related offences in recent years.

Carrying or using drugs

Get professional advice if you're involved in local legal proceedings. In particular, seek advice on matters of family law, such as:

  • child custody
  • child support

Know your rights and responsibilities.

Penalties for serious offences include death and corporal punishment. Same-sex relations are considered serious offences.

These activities are illegal in Iran:

  • homosexual acts for both men and women
  • failing to meet the legal dress code
  • import alcohol, pornography, pork products or short-wave radios
  • import printed or recorded Western material, including those with a religious theme

Local authorities consider domestic violence to be a private family matter. Iranian law does not prohibit domestic violence.

Advice for LGBTI travellers

Dress and behaviour

Iran has strict Islamic codes of dress and behaviour.

It's illegal to behave in a way considered to offend Islam. For example, you must not encourage Muslims to convert to another religion.

It's also illegal to:

  • have close contact between unmarried men and women — in particular between non-Muslims and Muslims
  • be in a de facto relationship

In public women are required by law to wear:

  • loose-fitting clothing to cover arms and legs
  • a long coat
  • a headscarf

If you fail to follow these dress requirements, you may be detained, fined or denied access to government and other services.

In public men should not wear shorts or sleeveless T-shirts.

Photography

You cannot photograph sensitive sites or events, including:

  • military and nuclear sites
  • government buildings and installations
  • critical civil infrastructure
  • public demonstrations

Electronic equipment

It's illegal to use drones without authorisation.

You will need permission to bring in a range of electronic equipment, including:

  • satellite phones
  • GPS trackers
  • walkie-talkies

Unauthorised use may result in arrest or detention. Tracking software installed on mobile phones, tablets or other computer equipment may attract the attention of authorities.

For advice, contact your nearest Iranian embassy or consulate .

Australian laws

Some Australian criminal laws still apply when you're overseas. If you break these laws, you may face prosecution in Australia.

Staying within the law and respecting customs

Dual citizenship

Iran doesn't recognise dual nationality.

If you're a dual national, you may be at greater risk of arbitrary arrest or detention. Our ability to provide consular assistance is extremely limited.

If you're arrested or detained, it's highly unlikely the Government of Iran would:

  • allow us to give you consular services
  • notify the Australian Embassy that you've been arrested or detained.

Under Iranian law, Iranian dual nationals must enter and exit Iran on their Iranian passport. Iranian immigration officials routinely confiscate the foreign passports of dual nationals.

If you're an Australian-Iranian dual national, authorities may not allow you to leave Iran if:

  • you're male and you haven't completed military service
  • you're female and you don't have permission from your husband or a senior male relative to leave Iran
  • you're male and have not paid back the dowry to your wife after divorce
  • you've overstayed your visa and not paid the fine.

We advise you not to travel to Iran if you are dual Australian-US or Australian-Israeli citizen, in line with those countries' advice to their citizens.  For other nationalities, you should check with the relevant country’s travel advice for advice about your risks.

Local customs

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan  is observed in Iran. Respect religious and cultural customs and laws during this time.

During Ramadan, eating, drinking and smoking may be illegal in public during the day. If you're not fasting, avoid these activities around people who are. Seek local advice to avoid offence.

Explore our Ramadan page to learn more, including dates for Ramadan.

Visas and border measures

Every country or territory decides who can enter or leave through its borders. For specific information about the evidence you'll need to enter a foreign destination, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.

Visitor visa

If despite our advice you decide to travel to Iran, you'll need a visa to enter. You must apply for a visa before you travel. Contact  Iranian embassy  in Australia to apply.

Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Contact the embassy of Iran for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules.

The Government of Iran issues Iranian visas. The Australian Embassy can't intervene in visa matters, including visas on arrival.

If you overstay your visa in Iran for any reason, even one beyond your control, you'll incur a fine. The Australian Government cannot pay this fine for you. You must also apply for an exit visa. You can get more information on Iranian visa and exit permit requirements from the Iranian Passport Police Office or Ministry of Foreign Affairs .

  • Embassies and Consulates of Iran

Other formalities

If your passport has evidence you've travelled to Israel, such as an Israeli exit or entry stamp, authorities will refuse you entry to Iran.

Strict import restrictions apply.

If you're a dual national, you may not be able to leave Iran unless you meet certain conditions.

Some countries won't let you enter unless your passport is valid for 6 months after you plan to leave that country. This can apply even if you're just transiting or stopping over.

Some foreign governments and airlines apply the rule inconsistently. Travellers can receive conflicting advice from different sources.

You can end up stranded if your passport isn't valid for more than 6 months.

The Australian Government does not set these rules. Check your passport's expiry date before you travel. If you're not sure it'll be valid for long enough, consider getting a new passport .

Lost or stolen passport

Your passport is a valuable document. It's attractive to people who may try to use your identity to commit crimes.

Some people may try to trick you into giving them your passport. Always keep it in a safe place.

If your passport is lost or stolen, tell the Australian Government as soon as possible.

  • In Australia, contact the Australian Passport Information Service .
  • If you're overseas, contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate .

Passport with ‘X’ gender identifier

Although Australian passports comply with international standards for sex and gender, we can’t guarantee that a passport showing 'X' in the sex field will be accepted for entry or transit by another country. Contact the nearest  embassy, high commission or consulate of your destination  before you arrive at the border to confirm if authorities will accept passports with 'X' gender markers.

  • LGBTQIA+ travellers

The local currency is the Iranian Rial (IRR).

Declare any foreign currency you have when you arrive in Iran. If you don't, authorities may confiscate it when you leave.

You can change major currencies in all major cities. However, recent government action has made it harder to change money in exchange bureaus.

You can't use international credit or bank cards.

You can't transfer funds into Iran using:

  • the commercial banking system
  • a money transfer company

Bring enough cash to cover your stay.

Local travel

Driving permit.

To drive in Iran you need both:

  • a valid Australian driver's licence
  • an International Driving Permit (IDP)

Get an IDP before leaving Australia.

Road travel

Iran has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world.

You're more likely to die in a motor vehicle accident in Iran than in Australia.

If you plan to drive:

  • check you have enough insurance cover
  • ensure you understand local traffic laws and practices
  • don't drink and drive

Pedestrians should exercise extreme caution when crossing roads, as traffic can be very congested and road-users unpredictable or undisciplined.

Driving or riding

Motorcycles

Check if your travel insurance policy covers you for using a motorbike, quad bike or similar vehicle.

Always wear a helmet.

Only use registered taxis and limousines. Book them through your hotel.

Public transport

Iran is serviced by extensive bus and rail options. Road conditions and road safety vary across the country. Rail services are more limited and slower.  Public transport  in the main cities is often very crowded.

The Gulf has many areas with security issues and territorial disputes. Authorities may inspect, detain and arrest vessels.  Foreigners navigating Iranian waters have been arrested and detained.

Piracy occurs in the Gulf.

Check the International Maritime Bureau's  piracy report .

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) hasn't audited air safety authorities in Iran.

The EU has operational restrictions in place for some of Iran Air's fleet. The airline hasn't met the EU's international safety standards.

Ageing planes on many of Iran's domestic air services create serious safety concerns.

DFAT doesn't provide information on the safety of individual commercial airlines or flight paths.

Check Iran's air safety profile with the Aviation Safety Network .

Emergencies

Depending on what you need, contact your:

  • family and friends
  • travel agent
  • insurance provider

English speakers are generally not available.

Always get a police report when you report a crime.

Your insurer should have a 24-hour emergency number.

Consular contacts

Read the Consular Services Charter for what the Australian Government can and can't do to help you overseas.

Iran Visa for Australian Citizens : Obtaining your Iran visa as an Australian citizen is actually much simpler than you think! As the Iranian government has taken effective measures, in the past couple of years, to facilitate the process for incoming visitors with tourism purposes, with the introduction of electronic visa and visa on arrival for most nationalities, including Australian passport holders.

We have prepared this full guide based on our years of experience  as an Iranian tour operator. So, if you wish to, you can also check out our Iran Tours .

#1 Options of Getting an Iran Visa for Australian citizens?

You have 3 options of obtaining your Iranian visa for Australian Citizens:

  • Visa on Arrival (at International airports of Iran)
  • In advance through the Iranian Embassy in Canberra , Australia
  • Obtaining your Iran Visa Grant before your travel and receiving your visa On Arrival at Iranian International airports.
Please Note: You cannot apply for a visa on arrival at land borders. So, if you intend to overland into Iran, you need to get your visa before arrival in Iran. (option 2)

#2 Iran Visa on Arrival (Airport Visa)

Iran tourist visa is issued for single entry with a maximum stay of 30 days, which is extendable.

What You Need

There are a few things you need to have ready before arriving in Iran:

  • Passport with at least 6 months of validity
  • Onward ticket
  • confirmed accommodation booking for at least the first 2 nights
  • Valid Medical/Travel Insurance for Iran

Aside from the above, it is safe to have available:

  • a passport photo
  • Proof of funds for the duration of your stay in Iran
Please Note: Your travel insurance must specifically state “Iran” , and not just Worldwide, Middle East or Asia. No worries if you have not already obtained your medical insurance, as you can purchase one at the airport for a price of about 16 Euros.
For your accommodation , you can have your hosting hostel or hotel, etc. email you a confirmation letter of your stay to present as your lodging in Iran.

The Process of Iran Visa on Arrival

Upon getting off your flight, you will directly go to the Visa Office in the main hall. If you have not already obtained your Visa Grant Notice*, you will be asked to fill in a simple form of your basic information such as full name, passport number, address in Iran, occupation, etc.

Upon completion of the form, you will need to pay your visa fees in cash (USD or Euro) in the bank, next to the visa office, and receive a receipt of payment, with which you return to the visa office, wait in line and hand in all your paperwork to the visa officer. You will again wait until your passport is ready.

This process may take from less than an hour to 2-3 hours, depending on circumstances.

*Iran Visa Grant Notice is a letter of approval of your Iran visa application by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

An Example of an Iran Visa Grant Notice

Iran Visa on Arrival Fees for Australian Citizens

Iran Visa on Arrival Fees for Australian Citizens is 145 Euros (or the equivalent USD). You may also pay 5 USD for service fee.

  • The payment is definitely in cash euros or dollars.
  • Make sure to have your whole fund of your travel in Iran IN CASH .

#2 Iranian International Airports issuing Visa on Arrival

As an Australian, you have the option of acquiring your visa on arrival at the following Iranian international airports:

  • Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport
  • Tehran, Mehrabad International Airport
  • Bandar Abbas
  • Kish Island*
  • Qeshm Island*

* For entry and stay up to 14 days in Islands of Kish and Qeshm, Australian among most nationalities do not need a visa. However, if you intend to enter mainland Iran, you will need to apply for Iran Visa.

#3 Electronic Visa (E-Visa) via Iranian Embassy in Canberra

Aside from visa on arrival, you also have the option of obtaining an E-Visa via the website of Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs .

Steps to get Iran E-Visa

  • Complete Electronic Iran Visa Application Form via the MFA E-Visa .
  • Receive your Iran Visa Grant Notice within 10 business days (at least 48 hours) via E-mail . Your Visa Grant Notice is valid for 30 days.
  • Make sure the “Place of Lodgment” on the Visa Grant Notice is “Australia”
  • Send the required documents to the Embassy of Iran in Canberra . ( You do NOT need to attend at the Embassy in person. Original passport is NOT needed. )
  • Receive your Iran E-Visa via email within 14 days. ( Urgent applications take 3 days, and the processing fee differs .)
  • Print out your E-visa and keep it during your entire stay in Iran.

Please check the official website of Iranian Embassy in Canberra , for detailed required documents, fees and address.

#4 Iran Visa Grant Notice for Visa on Arrival

You can apply for the E-Visa as instructed through the online application process, to receive your Iran Visa Grant Notice , a few days prior to your visit. Then, with a printed copy of the notice, you can receive your Visa upon arrival in Iran at the international airport of entry.

This way, your waiting time at the airport to receive your visa on arrival, as explained in option 1, can be significantly shorter.

  • In this case, your “Place of Lodgment”, when completing the online form, needs to be the Iranian airport of your entry.

#5 Apply Independently or via a Travel Agency?

While you can independently apply for your visa to travel to Iran solo, you also have the option of leaving the visa matters to the authorized travel agency from which you have purchased your organized Iran tour package . The benefits are:

  • They will take care of each step of obtaining your Iran Visa Grant Notice, which takes 2 to 3 days.
  • Such option will preclude any probable mistake you may make due to not being familiar with the process.
  • You can both receive your visa before arrival through the Iranian Embassy or on Arrival (depending how early you opt for the process.)

There are also agencies which can obtain your visa grant notice only, without the need to purchase an organized tour from them. In this case, there is an added service fee.

Australia's acting foreign minister Katy Gallagher

Australia ‘extremely concerned’ after Israeli airstrikes on Iran confirmed by US

Acting foreign minister Katy Gallagher says government is worried about potential for ‘further escalation of conflict in the region’

The Australian government has urged all parties to “exercise restraint and step back” after the US confirmed Israel has launched retaliatory strikes on Iran , bringing the Middle East closer to a regional war.

Officials in Washington said Israeli forces were carrying out military operations against Iran but did not describe the character or scale of those operations. Iranian state media said that drones had been shot down over Isfahan province in the early hours, and showed live shots of morning traffic in Isfahan city after sunrise to show that the situation was calm.

The acting foreign minister, Katy Gallagher, said on Friday that Australia “remains extremely concerned about the potential for miscalculation and further escalation of conflict in the region”.

“This is in no one’s interests,” Gallagher said.

“We urge all parties to exercise restraint and step back to avoid a further spiral of violence.”

Gallagher said Australia would continue working with its partners to try to reduce tensions and prevent further regional spillover.

Reuters on Friday cited sources saying Israel launched an attack on Iranian soil, in the latest tit-for-tat exchange between the two arch-foes.

Iranian media later reported explosions but an Iranian official told Reuters those were caused by air defence systems.

Three drones over the central city of Isfahan were shot down. Israel was silent on Friday about the latest escalation.

The Greens leader, Adam Bandt, said the Albanese government must condemn all sides, adding silence against Israel’s action would be “considered tacit support of the actions of Benjamin Netanyahu’s extreme war cabinet”.

“The only role Australia should play is pushing for de-escalation,” he said.

At a Jewish congregation in Melbourne on Friday morning, shortly before the first strikes, the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, said his party would always discern “lawful from the lawless, always differentiate civilisation from barbarism, and always discern the good from the evil”.

“This is why the unequivocal condemnation of Hamas is right,” he said. “And that is why we must unambiguously denounce Iran’s military attack on Israel and the regime’s sponsoring of terrorist groups across the region.”

after newsletter promotion

Tensions have been rising since an airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus on 1 April that was blamed on Israel. That strike killed a senior figure in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and eight other officers.

In response, Iran on 14 April launched missiles toward Israel . Almost all were shot down.

The Australian government unequivocally condemned Iran’s strikes towards Israel, saying the “reckless” action was “a grave threat to the security of Israel and the entire region”.

Meanwhile, the Australian government’s SmartTraveller website was updated on Friday to reflect the latest developments. The advice for Australians remains “do not travel” to Iran and “reconsider your need to travel” to Israel or the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

“Regional tensions are high, and the security situation could deteriorate quickly with little or no notice,” the website said.

For Israel, SmartTraveller warns “there’s a high threat of military reprisals and terrorist attacks against Israel and Israeli interests across the region”.
