Excellent service

Our whole experience with booking through Charter Travel was great. Claire spent time finding out what we wanted from our holiday and was always happy to come back with different options of hotel/destination if requested. She booked us two Caribbean islands with hotel transfer and inter connecting flight. Everything went to plan and we had a fantastic time. Booking with Claire gave us peace of mind that there was backup if any problems occurred whilst away. We would definitely recommend going to see Charter Travel, and will be contacting them again for our next adventure.

Amazing service. Third time in a row booking.

This is the third time in a row I have booked with Charter ( having used them nearly 20 years previous. Peter is amazing, we have booked Florida again and I kept changing my find and each time Peter came up with a plan. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Charter travel and do frequently. I feel Peter has almost become a friend and he has the patience of a saint. Also the price quoted was really good and couldn't be beaten.

Linda deserves 10 stars!!

Linda deserves 10 stars!! We have just returned from a fabulous holiday in Dubai, Bali, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and everything was perfectly organised by Linda. We had many questions during the booking and nothing was too much trouble for her. The holiday was fantastic with no concerns and the hotel in Bali was absolutely first class, we would love to return. In fact every accommodation was of the highest standard. Excellent Service, Always!

Claire at Charter Travel always exceeds our expectations. She comes up with a range of options based on our requirements paying particular attention to our preferencs, circumstances and wishes. Flights to Canada

Booking anything now is a protracted experience!! Just wanted some flights to Canada and following an attempt online, gave up rang Charter Travel whom employ real helpful humans and made my experience easy and cheaper (including.. yes baggage, seats, even wings on the plane!!!) Definitely would use again & recommend.

I have spoken with RICHARD on several occasions over our proposed trip to Sydney Australia. He pulled up several options giving us time to weigh these up. They did it again!

Once again Charter Travel have given us outstanding service. We arrived home from an amazing holiday in Thailand booked with them and decided the only way to get ivervthe holiday blues was to book another holiday. Weve booked Florida as a large family group for March next year. Our consultant was Peter, who is friendly, knowledgeable and very patient! It took some organizing sorting out 11 then 9 passenger, but we got there in the end. Not only did we get a better deal price wise, even though we still fly with Virgin, the house booked is huge and so close to all the attractions. We would not have got that elsewhere. Can't recommend Charter Travel enough, they go above and beyond every time.

Danny has been organising my annual…

Danny has been organising my annual holidays since my honeymoon in 2006! I just tell him where I want to go and he sends me a selection of hotels/areas to look at even offering advice when I’m not sure taking all the hard work of getting the perfect break away. I would not consider looking anywhere else other than Danny at Charter Travel and am really looking forward to my holiday in Morocco in May just booked with him.

Leah was outstanding!

We are a family of 4 with a strong desire to take our children on their dream holiday to Florida but we were out quoted through Virgin/TUI/ and other travel websites that went beyond our budget. Our friend recommended us to look at Charter Travel. Here come Leah, We asked what we wanted, they delivered and saved us money than what we were originally quoted for through Virgin even with upgrade option. Cannot fault Charter Travel

Cannot fault Charter Travel. The First Lady who answered the phone was very pleasant. Gerard then delt my booking despite inundating him with questions and queries patiently dealt with each and everyone of them and was very affable on the phone. Splendid service. I hope our trip to India & the Maldives lives up to the expectation of everything I have experienced so far. Would thoroughly recommend!

Was recommended to use them but got ghosted

After being recommended them on Facebook I completed a form on their online portal for a trip to Disney. They (Peter) emailed me a few days later reasking a few questions that I'd already completed plus a few others - which was fair enough. But then never heard anything back. Very weird experience to be ghosted by a travel agent. Luckily both Ever After holidays and Virgin have provided useful quotes.

Exceptional service

We couldn't be more pleased with the service provided by Charter Travel, namely Sean, who has gone over and above our expectations to accommodate the needs of my family (12 in total) for our holiday in Orlando next year. Sean remembered my family from our booking pre-covid when we had to re-arrange our holiday to Orlando during the pandemic. Thankfully,we were eventually able to enjoy our holiday. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Charter Travel and most certainly would use them again in the future.

Excellent company, 5 stars

Excellent company if you are looking for booking a holiday to the USA, they are person centred and very competitive on price. I booked my 2019 Florida holiday and Richard helped me with every aspect of my holiday so when I was ready to book again for 2024 I didn’t hesitate in contacting them and Richard got back to me straight away with prices and nothing was too much trouble for him even with me changing my mind on the dates. And due to the excellent service I booked again. I will also be going back to book my 2026 holiday.

Sean is in his 23rd year of serving as a Performance Tour and Festival Manager, having started his journey in New York City producing festivals at historic Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In 2012, he established Sechrist Travel in order to continues his work with customized experiences and in February 2014, Sean relocated to the Seattle, WA area.

Sean received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Clarke University (Dubuque, IA) and his  Master of Music in Choral Conducting  from East Carolina University (Greenville, NC).

In addition to coordinating music festivals and performance tour opportunities to qualified bands, choirs, and orchestras to international and domestic destinations, Sean is also the founding Artistic Director and Conductor of the Mill Creek Chorale , a 100-voice adult community choir. During his tenure in New York City, Sean also served as the Artistic Director of The Celebration Singers of New Jersey from 2001 to 2013. He has also served as Director of Choirs at Dowling High School (Des Moines, IA) and the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts (NYC).

Ensembles under his direction have performed at Carnegie Hall  (NYC), Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center (NYC), Orchestra Hall (Chicago), The National Cathedral (Washington, DC), St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Dublin, Ireland), and Notre – Dame  de Paris (cathedral church in Paris). His ensembles have also enjoyed International Performance Tours throughout Central Europe and the United Kingdom.

Azat Mulgimov takes the reins at ACS Moscow

ACS’s CEO, Tony Bauckham, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Azat to the ACS team. Azat’s experience and leadership qualities will be invaluable to our Russian and CIS offices. He has spent the last five years as Commercial Director and Member of the Board of Directors at Russian cargo charter airline Aviacon Zitotrans, where he had responsibility for the development of sales and marketing, the implementation of sales plans, recruitment and management of commercial department staff and sales to key clients. Prior to this he was Managing Director of a freight forwarding company in Russia.

Sean Mayberry

Prioritizing mental health.

S ean Mayberry has had a lifelong front-row seat to depression. He grew up in a poor family in western Massachusetts with two parents who exhibited many symptoms of depression, though he didn't realize it at the time. “For me, that was normal to have parents with those symptoms,” he says.

Then he spent time working in Africa as a foreign-service officer, and realized that his African friends, neighbors, and colleagues were suffering from different levels of depression too. “It was frustrating because, being a privileged Westerner, if I had that issue, I could go to the embassy doctor and get help,” Mayberry says. But mental-health treatment was not so available to locals. In another role years later, he’d travel to different villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo, leading programs on HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention, family planning, and maternal-health issues. Inevitably, 20% to 30% of the population wouldn’t respond to the interventions—and Mayberry theorizes it’s because they may have been depressed.

In 2012, Mayberry read an article about research that suggested group interpersonal psychotherapy was an effective way to treat depression among people in rural Uganda. He was living in New York City at the time. “I literally jumped on the No. 2 train, shot up to Columbia, and banged on the door of one of the researchers,” he says. “I said, ‘Is this true?’” Then he quit his job to launch StrongMinds, which aims to treat depression in sub-Saharan Africa by training community members to lead group talk-therapy sessions over a six-week period. “My kids were small, and they were like, ‘What is dad doing up in the attic?’” he says, recalling his early days plotting the new venture. He yelled back: “I’m ending depression in Africa.”

Fast-forward more than a decade, and he’s on his way. As of February, StrongMinds has provided 500,000 Africans with treatment; the million mark is in sight next year. During sessions, participants learn how to identify the triggers of their depression and how to address them. Last year, the nonprofit’s cost per patient was just $39. 

Six months after receiving treatment, 80% of attendees are depression-free. Many of the Africans who meet in group therapy form tight bonds, and turn to each other during tough times weeks and months after their treatment ends. “We’re democratizing depression,” Mayberry says. “If we don’t do this, no one will.”

Oklahoma City Public Schools board votes to approve new STEAM-based charter school

The Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education approved an amended application for a STEAM-based charter school on Monday night, but rejected two others, at least one of which now plans to turn to the state Board of Education seeking sponsorship.

By a 6-1 vote, the board agreed to sponsor RISE STEAM Academy, designed for students from pre-kindergarten through the fourth grade. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The charter school will lease space from Avery Chapel AME Church, located at 1425 N. Kelham Ave., with plans to open for the 2025-26 academic year. The OKCPS board had turned town RISE STEAM Academy’s initial application in late November .

The board declined again to approve formation of two other proposed charter schools in northeast Oklahoma City. Both had been turned down in November. Willard C. Pitts Academy, which would serve grades five through eight, lost on a 4-3 vote, while P3 Montessori Charter School, for children ages 3-5, only garnered two “yes” votes.

Board vice-chair Lori Bowman said district Superintendent Sean McDaniel had recommended a “yes” vote on the RISE STEAM Academy application and a “no” vote on the other two, and that’s how she voted. Board chair Paula Lewis voted “yes” on all three applications.

“As an elected official … we must consider what the community directly and indirectly communicates with us,” said Lewis, noting more than half of the students in the district boundaries don’t attend an OKCPS school. “We know there are communities that are saying they don’t believe what they envision for their child is happening in our schools. At the same time, we’ve made huge strikes in OKCPS schools to move the needle in the right direction.

“I think it’s a big leap to think that any charter applicant that comes to us is only trying to recruit the kids currently in our OKCPS schools. Charter schools began to exist and they continue to increase in number because parents and the community are looking for a different choice. That is the wave of the future.”

What to know about charter schools in Oklahoma City

Charter schools, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Education website, are public schools that are allowed greater flexibility for greater accountability . Charter schools have their own governing boards and are accountable to their sponsoring organization – either a local school board, a university or the state Board of Education. Students have to apply for admission, which often can be determined via lottery.

During its November meeting, the OKCPS board had approved another charter-school application from the Oklahoma Montessori Initiative, which will be the only Oklahoma City public school that will use the Montessori learning method, known for being student-led and self-paced. It’s also scheduled to open in fall 2025.

In addition to the Oklahoma Montessori Initiative and RISE STEAM Academy, OKCPS sponsors six other charter schools, which serve about 2,700 students from pre-K through 12th grade.

The RISE STEAM Academy will open with just pre-K, kindergarten and first-grade students and add one grade each year for the following three years. Carma Barlow, the school’s founder, said enrollment is projected to start at 194 students in 2025-26 and grow by 50 students a year to 294 students in 2028-29.

Startup funding will come from grants, including one from the Walton Family Foundation. Barlow said it was important to gain the sponsorship of the OKCPS district.

“What it means is that parents have choice,” Barlow said. “They have a choice and a high-quality option to engage with.”

Board member Carole Thompson said she is encouraged to see more educational options for students and parents in northeast Oklahoma City and voted for the RISE STEAM and Willard C. Pitts Academy proposals on Monday. In support of the Willard C. Pitts project, she said northeast Oklahoma City was “a partial middle-school desert” and said the school “would be another opportunity (for parents) to have a choice where their students go to school. Now they don’t have a choice.”

LaTasha Timberlake, the founder of Willard C. Pitts Academy, said the school’s next move will be to seek sponsorship from the state Board of Education. The board already sponsors multiple charter schools and approved a new sponsorship agreement for one in Okmulgee last month . She said the school could apply for state-board sponsorship as soon as that board’s next meeting, on Jan. 25.

“The process that we’ve been preparing for is to actually be ready after whatever result we got from this meeting,” Timberlake said.

There’s high expectations whenever he pitches because he rarely gives up hits. Four times this baseball season, he has combined on no-hitters while giving up six hits in 48 innings with 102 strikeouts.

So there he was Thursday afternoon with the wind blowing in and not a cloud in the sky, pitching in an opening game of the Southern Section Division 4 playoffs against visiting Dos Pueblos, which joked about turning up the pitching machine to 92 mph in practice.

It turned out that player knows what he’s talking about. Bateman, who committed to LSU but is expected to be a high draft pick, gave up two hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight, walking three and hitting a batter in Camarillo’s 9-0 victory. He came through with a strikeout in the fourth with the bases loaded, showing emotion and trying to fire up his teammates. That led to a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth.

Even though he had some command issues early in the season (he has 33 walks in 53 1/3 innings), Bateman clearly has made progress, putting him in position to be a draft candidate for the first or second round this summer. And pitching in Division 4, there’s going to be an opponent who gets lucky to beat him. He has four pitches, but his mid-90s fastball overpowers high school hitters. He’s limiting himself to 85 pitches to protect his arm.

“He’s grown so much since the beginning of the year,” coach TJ Foreman said.

Bateman is also one of Camarillo’s top hitters. He had an RBI single in the first inning and another single in the third. Tommy Goodin had two RBI hits. The Scorpions, seeded No. 1 in Division 4, had four bunts in the game, two going for singles. They will play at Murrieta Valley on Tuesday.

Hart 5, Simi Valley 4: In a wild Division 2 opener with darkness lurking in the bottom of the 14th inning, Hart finally won when Brayden Jefferis drove in the winning run with a one-out sacrifice fly. There were many heroes for Hart, which trailed 3-0. Troy Cooper entered the game in the eighth inning and allowed one hit in seven innings of relief.

But it was junior Brady Werther coming through most of all. He hit a two-run home run to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. He hit an RBI double to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth. The win delays retirement plans for Hart coach Jim Ozella. The team advances to Tuesday’s second round at Newport Harbor.

Maranatha 4, Royal 0: Zach Strickland threw a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts in Maranatha’s Division 2 opener.

Villa Park 6, Bishop Amat 1: Justin Tims struck out nine and walked none in throwing a shutout in the Division 1 opener. Shawn Romero had three hits.

Orange Lutheran 6, Sierra Canyon 0: A six-run sixth inning sent the Lancers into the next round of the Division 1 playoffs. Gary Morse threw a one-hit shutout. Freshman Sean Parrow had the Lancers shut out for five innings but a bases-loaded walk and bases-loaded hit batter in the sixth got the Lancers rolling. Derek Curiel had a two-run single.

Westlake 10, Mira Costa 1: Johnny Backus hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and Nolan Johnson drove in five runs for Westlake, seeded No. 1 in Division 2. Dylan Volantis struck out 10 in six innings.

Arcadia 3, Long Beach Poly 0: Gabriel Lopez struck out eight, walked none and allowed four hits in 6 1/3 innings for Arcadia in Division 2.

Valencia 7, Aliso Niguel 1: Michael Mair threw a four-hitter and Aiden Voyles had four hits in Valencia’s 7-1 win.

San Juan Hills 1, Cajon 0: Drew Nelson threw six scoreless innings for San Juan Hills.

Ayala 6, La Serna 1: Caleb Trugman struck out nine in six innings and Dylan Wood had two hits and two RBIs for Ayala.

Arlington 4, Woodbridge 2: Nathan Chavez and Cody Kiemele combined on a seven-hitter for Arlington.

St. Francis 8, Windward 3: Jordan Lewallen had two hits and three RBIs for St. Francis.

Newport Harbor 1, Capistrano Valley Christian 0: Ryan Williams went four for four to lead Newport Harbor.

Quartz Hill 13, Charter Oak 1: Ismael Quintero struck out eight in six innings.

Chatsworth 7, Birmingham 3: The Chancellors handed Birmingham its first defeat after 12 consecutive West Valley League victories. Logan Ruiz had two hits and two RBIs and Mason Ruiz threw five innings for the Chancellors.
