Fuerteventura’s volcanoes are the main protagonists of this island’s landscape, and one of its most impressive attractions. In total, there are 22 volcanic areas scattered across the island, so no matter where you spend your vacation, you’ll be able to visit at least one of them.

Plus, some of the volcanoes in Fuerteventura are still active, creating a unique tourist experience that you can’t get just anywhere. I absolutely love the geothermal features of this place, and whenever I come here, I make it a point to do a Fuerteventura volcano hike . The contrast between the basaltic sand beaches and the turquoise waters is something you must see for yourself.

To help you plan your visit, I’m sharing the 8 best volcanoes on Fuerteventura , as well as everything you should know if you want to do a Fuerteventura volcano tour .

1. Calder ón Hondo, the most famous volcano in Fuerteventura

First, Calderón Hondo is the most popular volcano in Fuerteventura , so it’s a must-see. It’s said to be about 50,000 years old, and at nearly 985 feet tall, it’s a huge attraction on the island. Calderón Hondo is actually part of a group of volcanoes in the northern part of the island, so many visitors choose to do a Fuerteventura volcano hike to see them all. For me it’s one of the best hikes in Fuerteventura .

1. Calderón Hondo, the most famous volcano in Fuerteventura

As one of the best places to see in Fuerteventura , Calderón Hondo has one of the best-preserved craters, and it’s especially impressive since it’s 230 feet deep. From the top, you’ll get panoramic views of other Fuerteventura volcanoes like Bayuyo and Las Calderas.

To get there, start at the trailhead in Lajares and follow the path, which is well-marked with signposts. Climbing Calderón Hondo takes about an hour, and it’s not very difficult to complete the three-mile route. Of course, if you prefer to go with a guide, you can book this hiking tour for assistance and interesting facts along the way.

2. Bayuyo Volcano, another Fuerteventura volcano you should visit

The Bayuyo Volcano is another volcano in Fuerteventura ’s northern region, specifically in the municipality of La Oliva. Bayuyo erupted 10,000 years ago, in one of the most important geological events on the island, as its lava spread across the surface for 38 square miles.

Moreover, the volcano has two craters, so you’ll find two trails leading to its summit. One of them starts in the town of Corralejo , another place on the island that’s worth visiting. Among the attractions in Corralejo , I recommend going to the Great Dunes or taking this buggy excursion through Corralejo National Park. It’s also worth visiting Playa del Moro, one of the best beaches in Corralejo .

The other trail starts in a nearby town and winds around the edge of the western crater. It’s a slightly easier path since it starts close to the base of the volcano.

Both of these Fuerteventura volcano hikes cross three miles of lava fields, so you’ll see a range of striking colors. As the trail ascends, you’ll see beautiful views of the island and its beaches, and if the skies are clear, you can even see Lanzarote and Isla de Lobos.

3. Volc án de la Arena, one of the best active volcanoes in Fuerteventura

Another Fuerteventura volcano that I recommend you go to is the Volcán de la Arena . This is the youngest volcano on the island, and it has two well-preserved craters. It’s particularly attractive because it’s surrounded by 4.5 square miles of lava, where you can find a series of breathtaking caves, some measuring several feet high.

In addition to their geological importance, the caves also hold a lot of history since they served as a refuge for the island’s inhabitants in pre-Hispanic times. Skeletal remains, pottery pieces, and other artifacts have been found here that confirm the presence of humans.

3. Volcán de la Arena, one of the best active volcanoes in Fuerteventura

These days, you can find native flora and fauna here, including shearwaters, owls, lizards, and rabbits, as well as various plants and fungi.

The volcanic crater is about 650 feet from the base, so to reach the top, you’ll have to take the dirt path from the center of La Oliva. The route is part of the Fuerteventura Nature Trail Network, so it is well-marked and easy to follow. At the top, you’ll get 360° views, and you can even see the Dunes of Corralejo and Isla de Lobos.

Keep in mind that if you do this Fuerteventura volcano hike , you can descend the mountain on the same trail, or go down to Corralejo and visit the attractions in town.

4. Las Calderas Volcano, a Fuerteventura volcano with a unique landscape

The Las Calderas Volcano is part of the Bayuyo chain of volcanoes that I mentioned earlier, and they all erupted simultaneously. This particular Fuerteventura volcano has an open uneven crater, where you can see little caves and geothermal pockets.

If you decide to add this place to your volcano tour in Fuerteventura , you should start at the trailhead in Lajares. Many travelers choose to continue the trek by visiting some of the neighboring volcanoes, like the Volcán de la Arena or Calderón Hondo, but you’ll still enjoy the route if you only check out Las Calderas.

Moreover, the path is well-marked with signposts and it’s quite an easy 4.3-mile hike through one of the oldest lava fields on the island, so I recommend it.

5. La Caldera Mountain (Isla de Lobos), another spectacular volcano in Fuerteventura

La Caldera Mountain is on Isla de Lobos , so you’ll have to take this ferry to get there. This Fuerteventura volcano is over 415 feet high and was responsible for this Canary Island’s formation about 130,000 years ago.

What I like about this hike is that it’s quite simple, so you can enjoy it as a family. Not only that, but the dreamy landscapes are breathtaking, especially when you can view them from an elevated lookout point.

Again, to visit La Caldera, you must take one of the ferries to Isla de Lobos that leave from the town of Corralejo, and you’ll need to request a permit to get onto the island. However, if you book your ferry here , the permit is included in the ticket price, so it’s super convenient.

Once you’re on Isla de Lobos, look for the hiking trail near the pier, which should be to your left. After a few feet, you’ll get to La Caleta Beach, and you can start climbing the mountain. Don’t forget to bring your camera, as this Fuerteventura volcano tour grants you amazing panoramic views.

6. Gairia Volcano, an amazing volcano in central Fuerteventura

Back on the mainland, one of the best volcanoes is right in the center of Fuerteventura. The Gairia Volcano (Caldera de Gayria) is one of the largest volcanoes on Fuerteventura, and it’s easy to recognize. Surrounding it is a large plain, which makes the 1,500-foot-tall volcano look even bigger.

Keep in mind that this volcano is in a protected area that focuses on breeding and conserving the bird population. Therefore, the trail to access it is only open from August to March, so you’ll have to plan your trip accordingly.

To hike this Fuerteventura volcano , start at the trailhead in Casilla de Morales, then follow the path to Tiscamanita. The route is somewhat steep, so you should be in good physical condition to do it. That said, the effort is worth it, thanks to the incredible views at the top.

While it’s free to climb this volcano, I really like this tour since it combines Gairia with a tasting afterward, in which you can try local wines and typical Canarian products. It’s one of the best tours in Fuerteventura , so I recommend checking it out.

7. Sacred Mountain of Tindaya, a historic volcano in Fuerteventura

Next, the Sacred Mountain of Tindaya (Montaña Sagrada de Tindaya) is a spectacular volcano in Fuerteventura . What makes this one so special is that it’s 18 million years old and is believed to be one of the first geological formations to emerge on the island.

In addition to its antiquity, the mountain served as a centerpiece for many religious rites performed by the aboriginal Majorero people. You can even see hundreds of preserved rock engravings around the peak of the mountain, making this a valuable archaeological site.

The volcano is sometimes called “The Mountain of the Witches” since it has several mysterious places like the Bailadero de las Brujas, a spot where witches are said to have practiced their craft.

This Fuerteventura volcano is over 1,300 feet high, so it takes a bit of effort to get up and down the path. To do this hike, start in the town of Tindaya, then follow the signs, which are very clear and include interesting facts about the different bird and plant species along the trail.

If you aren’t an experienced hiker but still want to tour this Fuerteventura volcano , I suggest this guided excursion , which will take you to the Sacred Mountain as well as Betancuria Natural Park, the Dunes of Corralejo, and several beaches.

8. Monta ña Roja, a must-see Fuerteventura volcano in Corralejo

Finally, Montaña Roja is another volcano in Fuerteventura ’s town of Corralejo. If you visit Corralejo National Park, you’ll see this reddish-brown mountain rising from the center of the dunes, creating a stunning sight.

The volcano is a little over 1,000 feet above sea level, and you can reach the peak by following the trail that starts in Villaverde . Along the five-mile route, you’ll get impressive views of the island, so take your time to admire the landscape and capture gorgeous images.

8. Montaña Roja, a must-see Fuerteventura volcano in Corralejo

For those who are more adventurous, I recommend starting your hike very early in the morning so you can watch the sunrise from the summit. You won’t regret it!

Regardless of when you do this Fuerteventura volcano hike , you’ll be able to see one of the island’s most important birds: the Canarian houbara. Just keep in mind that the descent can be tricky since the terrain has lots of gravel, so it’s easy to slip. Be careful, then reward your efforts with a refreshing swim at one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura , such as Playa del Moro in Corralejo.

Hiking the Calderón Hondo Volcano, was one of the most memorable things we did in Fuerteventura . And here is all you need to know to hike to the top of Calderón Hondo.

HIKING GUIDE TO REACH THE TOP OF CALDERÓN HONDO VOLCANO

1. How to get to the start of the hike?

While there is different starting points to hike to the top, we chose the northern side to start the ascent of the Volcano. It’s just a few minutes drive from Corralejo .

However be aware that the last part of the road is not paved. So better have a good car, although we still managed to get there with our little fiat 500.

There is a small parking at the start of the trail which is well indicated. You can’t really miss it.

2. Starting your ascent to the top of Calderón Hondo

The first good news is that the hike is relatively easy. It is suitable for everyone including families with children. Good sneakers is sufficient for the hike. However, we do not recommend using flip-flops as some parts of the trail are a bit slippery.

The other good news is that you can reach the top in just 20 minutes from the parking lot. Once you reach the top you can choose to walk around the crater (which we highly recommend), or simply take a few shots at the viewing platform and get back to your car.

However, the landscape itself is fascinating and worth taking your time to fully enjoy the beauty of the volcano and the stunning view of Fuerteventura. From the top you can also see Lanzarote and Lobos island another must-see in Fuerteventura .

3. Check out the Chipmunks

Once you reach the top of the volcano the first thing you will see is the viewing platform and the enormous crater in front of you. However, another exciting attraction at the top are the little chipmunks doing their show right in front of you.

They are actually not native to the Island, but were brought to Fuerteventura in the 1960s. Today, there are many on the islands as they do not really have any predators. Feeding them is prohibited, however, many tourists do not seem to observe this rule…

As always it is not good for a wild animal to be fed. We know it’s really hard to resist as they are super cute, but please refrain from feeding them.

4. Hike around the volcano

Once you reach the top, we highly recommend to hike around the crater at the top of the volcano. To enjoy the view even more, go there just before sunset. The colors will be stunning. It took us about 45 min with plenty of photo stops to complete the full circle. Then we simply hiked back down to our car.

When to visit Calderón Hondo

Like the rest of Fuerteventura, you can visit the volcano all year round. However, during summer, it can get quite hot during the day. Hence getting there just before sunset would be more pleasant.

It can get a bit windy at the top of the volcano. Bring a jacket with you just in case and of course some water.

OUR IMPRESSIONS OF CALDERÓN HONDO VOLCANO

The northern part of Fuerteventura resemble Lanzarote with its volcanic and dry landscape. You can admire many beautiful looking volcanoes in this part of the island. We loved it. Driving through this part of the island is fantastic and represents well the beauty and diversity of the Canary Islands .

The Calderón Hondo is a volcano straight out of a postcard. The crater is breathtaking with its perfect circular shape. The view from the top is stunning and worth the short hike.

If you are visiting Fuerteventura and you are up for a little bit of adventure, hiking the Calderón Hondo would be a great choice.

WHAT TO DO NEAR CALDERÓN HONDO

1. visit corralejo.

Corralejo is the largest resort on the island of Fuerteventura . The town is very popular due to its beautiful beaches ( top 10 beaches here ), ideal weather, scenic countryside and festive atmosphere. This is where we set our base for the first week in Fuerteventura.

Corralejo has it all and is for everyone. If you are visiting Corralejo with children you will enjoy attractions like aqua parks, mini-golf and the aquarium etc.

If you are in Fuerteventura for surfing, then Corralejo is probably your best choice. There are many surf school in the town. Also most of the best surf spots are located in the north of the island. However, it can get quite busy, so booking in advance is recommended. You can book your surf lesson  here .

Corralejo is also a town where you will find many restaurants along the beach and great shopping experience in town. There is a wide variety of activities you can do in Corralejo, which makes it a great place to stay.

2. VISIT EL COTILLO

We continue on the north of the island to El Cotillo. A visit to Fuerteventura without visiting this old fishing village would be a pity. The village is bordered by 2 of the most beautiful beaches on the island , with golden sand where you can swim in the crystal clear waters.

In the surrounding area, many natural pools and lagoons dot the coastline, as is often the case in the Canary Islands . To the north of the village, Playa Marfolín looks like a tropical Southeast Asian beach: an ideal “spot” for sunbathing in the middle of Winter!

To the south, Playa del Castillo – named after the castle del Tostón which once protected the island from pirate attacks – is a haunt for surfers who come to enjoy the strong waves. Playa del Castillo (photo above) is actually one of our favorite beaches in Fuerteventura . When we drove there for the first time, we were in complete awe! Make sure to check it out.

WHERE TO STAY NEAR CALDERÓN HONDO

Corralejo is best if you like more actions during your holidays. Plenty of bars, restaurants, a very young crowd, surf school, boat trip to Los Lobos, perfect beaches etc. There are so many things to do. However, it may not be the most romantic gateway.

We stayed at Atlantic Garden Beach Mate hotel. The location was perfect near the main beach and right next to a supermarket. The place was clean and modern. Check it out  here .

Calderón Hondo, one of Fuerteventura’s most accessible volcanoes

In the north of the island, in an isolated part of the municipality of La Oliva , the silhouette of the volcano known as Calderón Hondo looms on the horizon. It’s not alone: around it are several other volcanic cones which together make up what is known as the Bayuyo alignment . These volcanoes emerged simultaneously around 50,000 years ago, and their lava caused the surface area of Fuerteventura to increase northwards, bringing it closer to the neighbouring island of Lanzarote.

Because it can be reached via a large number of different paths and the incline is only moderate, access to Calderón Hondo is completely straightforward, and the ascent is one of the easiest on the island. In addition, its location between the towns of Lajares and Corralejo means that the visitor can take in other major sightseeing attractions in the north of the island, such as the Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park and the secluded fishing village of Majanicho . The Bayuyo formation, a volcanic wonder in the north of Fuerteventura

There was a time in the dim, distant past when the Canary Islands did not cover the same surface area as they do today. In the specific case of Fuerteventura (which in geological terms is considered the oldest island in the archipelago), we know that its elongated form was not always so pronounced. Fifty thousand years ago, seven points of eruption in a 5-kilometre straight line began to spew out lava, as a result of which the island’s surface area expanded by 110 square kilometres and the island of Lobos emerged.

These ancient eruptions have nowadays become seasoned volcanoes making up what is now called the Bayuyo alignment —Bayuyo being a name with pre-Hispanic origins handed down from the tribes who occupied the island in ancient times. In a north-easterly to south-westerly direction, the volcanic craters of Bayuyo, Las Calderas, Caldera Encantada, Caldera Rebanada, Calderón Hondo, Montaña Colorada, Montaña de la Mancha and Montaña de Lomo Blanco (together with their lava fields) form one of northern Fuerteventura’s most remarkable landscapes.

How to get to Calderón Hondo

Of all the volcanoes mentioned above, Calderón Hondo , is not only the best preserved, but also probably the most easily accessible. It can be reached via a large number of well-signposted paths from Corralejo in the north, or from Lajares in the south. It is however from Lajares, located only 4 kilometres from the volcano, that most hikers begin the ascent.

Calderón Hondo

We need to find the point of departure on the outskirts of the town, right on the fork between the paved road leading to Majanicho — Calle la Cancela —and the sandy track that leads to Calderón Hondo— Camino Calderas . Once on this track, we can make our way without difficulty to the volcano, which can be clearly seen in the distance. We need to be aware that we will soon come to a second fork which, if we take the left-hand path, will enable us to ascend the western face of the volcano—or its southern face if we take the right-hand path.

The right-hand path is recommended, as it is less steep and stony. Along this path—an ascent of 2.5 kilometres, which takes 35 minutes—we will climb the southern face of Calderón Hondo, while around us we will see the increasingly spectacular views of the amazing volcanic landscape and the plain on which it is set. In addition, hikers can explore vestiges of the history of the region’s economy during their walk. There are, for example, several abandoned quarries scattered across the landscape, reminders of the role that volcanic materials historically played in the construction industry (before they were banned, of course!)

Challenge: crown a volcano on Fuerteventura

Just below the summit of Calderón Hondo, the climb becomes a little steeper. Once you reach the top, however, you will quickly see that all your efforts and your fatigue have not been in vain. At an altitude of 278 metres , the views from the volcano are simply staggering, offering a wide panorama of the north of Fuerteventura and its lava fields, in addition to the islands of Lobos and Lanzarote in the distance. In fact, we can recommend visiting at sunset, when the impact of the experience is heightened even further by the light.

You may also come across goats and squirrels looking for food; the squirrels only arrived on the island as an invasive species in 1965. It is interesting to note that, currently, given the lack of predators on Fuerteventura, the squirrel population has already reached a million.

If we want to discover the great attraction of Calderón Hondo itself, we must turn our backs on the aforementioned views. With a depth of 70 metres and a few fascinating traces of yellow sulphur low down, the volcano’s crater allows a glimpse of the long-distant origins of this part of Fuerteventura. If the weather is not too windy, we may even be able to walk around the crater to enjoy the full range of views.

All things considered, the trail to Calderón Hondo is a straightforward one that can be undertaken either alone or by a family with children .

Mountains and volcanoes of Fuerteventura, visits that are usually forgotten

When we think of Fuerteventura, its  spectacular and long beaches  come to mind. However, despite being one of the flattest islands of the Canary Islands, it has important mountains and volcanoes, which are protected. Today we discover a different visit to Fuerteventura, we review the forgotten natural areas: the  mountains and the volcanoes .

Pico de la Zarza

At 807 meters above sea level, Pico de la Zarza  is located as the highest point of Fuerteventura . The route begins in the south of the island, in the municipality of Morro Jable. It is recommended to climb to the top at dawn, when we can see and touch the clouds or at sunset, you will witness one of  the best sunsets of Fuerteventura , because if the sky is clear you can see the island of Gran Canaria and Las Cañadas from Teide de Tenerife.

How to get?  From the FV-2 take Vinamar direction to the golf course. From here, we must go towards a small exit that leads to a water tank and a roundabout. Before reaching it, take a dirt road that you will find on the right. Follow this road until you reach Pico de la Zarza.

Mountain of Tindaya

Tindaya is the best known point of Fuerteventura. Geomorphologically it is trachyte rock with a pyramidal shape. It has an altitude of 400 meters and is the result of the erosion of the volcano on the current mountain. The  vegetation of the surroundings of Tindaya  is typical of the Canary Islands, we can find: Cuernúa, Jorao or Helianthemum tymiphyllum. As for the fauna, they inhabit mainly birds like the houbara bustard, the stone curlew or the trumpeter bullfinch.

Tindaya is known as “ the mountain of the witches ” and has always been the focus of magical rites and a sacred place for the aboriginal majoreros. In the mountain of Tindaya there are engravings podomorfos, that is to say, footprints, made by the old inhabitants of the island. For this reason, and due to the characteristics it gathers, Tindaya is considered a  Site of Cultural Interest , a Natural Monument and a Point of Geological Interest.

How to get?  Tindaya is located in the municipality of La Oliva, and near the mountain is the town of the same name. For the FV-10 take direction Tindaya, take the detour for Calle la Oliva. Take the first exit that you see to the right, for when to take again the right one in the following exit that you see. Continue straight ahead to reach the Tindaya Mountain.

Malpais de la Arena

Also in the municipality of La Oliva and 10 kilometers from Tindaya is the  Volcán de la Arena . Its 120 meters high and its two craters can be seen from anywhere in the north of Fuerteventura. From its summit also, you have a privileged view of El Cotillo, Isla de Lobos, the Dunes of Corralejo, Lanzarote or Lajares.

The Malpaís de la Arena is a protected area of ​​Fuerteventura and  the youngest volcano on the island . It is a volcano surrounded by a sea of ​​lava, called Malpaís, of 12 square kilometers, where it has given way to a characteristic ecosystem. Lizards, lizards and rabbits coexist alongside Canary Islands own vegetation and protected as the Caralluma burchardii.

How to get?  In the town of Villaverde, take the FV-101 and turn down the Camino de Bayajo, at the height of the church of San Vicente Ferrer. In the second exit, crossing the streets Montaña la Arena and Camino de Bayajo, we will arrive at a car park where we will have to leave the car and continue the path on foot, since the path belongs to the Natural Paths Network of Fuerteventura.

Volcano Calderón Hondo

In Lajares we find three aligned volcanoes:  Volcán Bayuyo, Las Calderas and Volcán Calderón Hondo . The eruptions of these three formations created more than 50,000 years ago  increased the surface of Fuerteventura  and created Isla de Lobos.

The Volcano Calderón Hondo has a depth of 70 meters, which can be seen when we ascend to its summit, where we find a viewpoint from which you can see the volcanoes of Las Calderas and Bayuyo, and the  northern area of Fuerteventura .

How to get?  With direction Majanicho we take the road near the Municipal Football Field, a kilometer from the stadium we can park the car and start the ascent to the Volcano Calderón Hondo on foot through the Network of Natural Roads of Fuerteventura, belonging to the second stage. In the first division of the path, turn left

Mountain of the Caldera

It is the highest point of Isla de Lobos and a must-see treasure. From its 100 meters of altitude we can have a  privileged view of the islands of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and the Island of Lobos itself . On the sides of the volcanic cone break the waves of the Atlantic Ocean offering its visitors a unique postcard.

How to get?  To get to Isla de Lobos, the only way is by boat from Corralejo. Once on the islet we take the path that leads us west and leads directly to the Montaña de la Caldera, passing by the Playa de la Caleta.

Best day trips and excursions in Fuerteventura

Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste and Morro Jable are the main tourist towns and resorts in Fuerteventura and most of the tours and excursions will start from here. Depending on where you're staying, you can explore and see what day trips and activities you can do.

• Corralejo tours & activities (From Corralejo you can hop over to Lobos island, go on a buggy tour, or on a dolphin-watching boat tour)
• Caleta de Fuste tours & activities (Go on an island sightseeing tour from Caleta, enjoy a catamaran sailing experience, or the adrenaline of driving a buggy )
• Morro Jable tours & activities (Try a whale & dolphin watching cruise, explore Jandia Natural Park on a buggy tour, or give kids a unique experience while sailing on a pirate ship)

Although not as diverse as Tenerife or Gran Canaria in terms of activities and landscape, Fuerteventura stands out as the best beach destination in the Canary Islands , if what you're looking for is white sand, crystal waters and great weather to make the most of what the island had to offer all year round.

Corralejo Natural Park is probably Fuerteventura's no. 1 attraction and if you're staying in Corralejo you'll probably drive through the dunes on your way to the hotel (although a new road is now available, it does not have the magical views of the old road through the dunes).

Flag Beach is one of the most popular spots and you'll see here lots of surfers and kite surfers here, as this is a great place for water sports.

Another way to explore the dunes is on a buggy tour, which starts in Corralejo, then goes towards the Natural Park, where you will be able to explore the dunes. From here the tour goes towards the volcanic area and Tamaragua, for a true off-road experience.

Even if you chose to do the buggy tour, we still recommend spending a day on your own in the natural park, walking through the dunes and enjoying the amazing beaches, the ocean, and the view towards the island of Los Lobos.

One of the best places to visit while on holiday in Fuerteventura is Lobos Island, where you can enjoy a day in paradise, on an island that is still uninhabited. You can swim in the beautiful coves and lagoons or you can walk around the island in only 4 to 5 hours, seeing the best views the island has to offer.

There are multiple ferries daily that make the trip from Corralejo to Lobos Island.

Oasis Park is the only animal park in Fuerteventura, but it's probably one of the most amazing in the Canaries.

It's got beautiful views (don't miss the view from the Bird of Prey show), a botanical garden which is actually the largest cactus garden in the Canary Islands and many animal shows that will keep you busy for an entire day. Oasis Park is probably one of the best places to visit in Fuerteventura if you're on holiday with the family, as the kids will have a great time watching all the different animals (they also have a special attraction called Kid's Farm and Park).

Explore Fuerteventura's main towns and resorts

Corralejo is a beautiful town located in the north of the island of Fuerteventura, with stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and sand dunes that stretch for miles along the coast.

Corralejo is the best resort to stay in Fuerteventura if you're looking for nightlife and lively bars and it's also a great base if you want to explore the dunes, Los Lobos island and the amazing Corralejo Grandes Playas. 

Caleta de Fuste is a resort town located on the east coast of the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The town has a long sandy beach that is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, backed by a promenade with plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops, making it a popular destination for tourists.

Caleta de Fuste is the island's closest resort to the airport, although you shouldn't worry, as the noise from the planes will not bother you while you're there. The transfer time is short and there are many all-inclusive family hotels, which is why the resort is a favorite for families traveling with kids to Fuerteventura.

El Cotillo is a small village on the northwest coast of the island and it's one of the best places in Fuerteventura to spend a relaxing and chilled day, away from the bigger resort towns.

El Cotillo is much more quiet and relaxed compared to other resorts and here you'll find the beautiful Playa Concha and the Cotillo lagoons - both are great places for kids during the times when the tide is low and you can enjoy the lagoons and their turquoise waters.

The beaches in Costa Calma are some of the best in the Canary Islands, with Playa de Sotavento being a particular highlight. Overall, Costa Calma is a beautiful and peaceful destination, much more laid back and quiet compared to places like Corralejo or Caleta de Fuste.

Morro Jable is a charming tourist town located on the southern coast of Fuerteventura, just a few kilometers from Costa Calma and is known for its beautiful beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere.

Morro Jable has plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants to explore, although it's quiet at night, so it's a good place for families and not so much for people looking for an active nightlife. The walk to Faro de Jandia is lovely and there are kilometers of beach that you can wander is all directions, so it's a great place to visit in Fuerteventura if you like long coastal walks.

Located in the south of Fuerteventura, the Jandia peninsula is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura, some of them wild and ideal for water sports like kitesurfing or windsurfing. If you rent a car with the intention to explore Jandia, don't miss a visit to Playa Esquinzo, Playa Butihondo, Playa del Mal Nombre and of course, Sotavento, which is probably the most well-known among visitors. 

In every guide you read about the island, you'll find a recommendation for Sotavento Lagoon and they are right to point you in this direction, as this is one of the top natural attractions in Fuerteventura and one of the island's most iconic symbols.

The Jandia Peninsula has some of the most amazing beaches in the Canary Islands and Sotavento Beach is definitely one of them. Playa de la Barca - part of Sotavento Beach - is one of the images you see on most postcards of Fuerteventura, with a huge lagoon that gets filled up with ocean water when the tide is high. This is the perfect place for surfers and kite surfers and it's also the beach where the Windsurfing Championship takes place every year.

Betancuria is at the top of our suggestion list for things to see in Fuerteventura if you're interested in finding out more about the island's history and culture.

A visit to Betancuria will show you another side of Fuerteventura, as this place is full of history and old buildings that will reveal a lot about the island's past. Betancuria used to be Fuerteventura's capital before Puerto del Rosario and you'll find here a charming town, with white buildings and pretty flowers, ready to receive its daily visitors.

The winding road to Betancuria may be intimidating for some drivers, but it offers amazing views, very different from the coastal roads.

It's not easy to get to Cofete , as the road is unpaved and bumpy, but this means that this beach still remains unspoiled and untouched by mass tourism.

Swimming at Cofete Beach is dangerous and it's not advisable to do so, but you can walk for miles and miles while enjoying the beautiful view of the mountains and the ocean. Bring something to eat and drink if you plan on spending the day, as this place is far away from the city and there's no shop in sight.

Ajuy is always on our list of recommended places to visit in Fuerteventura, as here you'll be able to eat fresh fish, explore some amazing caves and then finish the day watching one of the best sunsets in Fuerteventura.

If you plan on exploring the caves in Ajuy remember to bring closed shoes - preferably sneakers or trekking shoes, as you'll have to climb and walk on rocky soil. Take your time, enjoy the views and be careful if spending time at the beach, since the beach in Ajuy is considered dangerous for swimming.

This tour will take you to see the Sacred Mountain in Tindaya, the Morro Velosa Viewpoint, then on a trek around the canyon of La Presa de la Peñita. From here you will head to Ajuy and then to Costa Calma.

Yet another village on the west coast, Puertito de los Molinos is a village with just a few houses, which are only inhabited during the summer months, mostly by tourists who come here to escape the crowded resorts.

On days when the tide allows it, you can cross the ocean and explore the caves that are situated in the vicinity of the beach. It's important that you go there at a certain time if you want to be able to visit the caves in Puertito de Los Molinos , and although this experience might not be for everyone, it's one of the most unique places that you can visit in Fuerteventura.

Puerto del Rosario is not the prettiest town on the island, but it's still a nice place to spend a couple of hours walking by the coast and discovering the sculpture park and the various murals around the city. The city has updated its image in the past years by placing around 100 sculptures throughout the city, so you can have a fun day discovering as many as possible.

If you want a change of scenery, why not take the ferry over to Lanzarote?

The two islands are so close to one another that it would be a shame not to see how you like the other, even for just a day.

From Fuerteventura, you can take the ferry from Corralejo to Playa Blanca, a chilled resort in the south of Lanzarote, where you can explore the marina, try one of the local bars and restaurants or spend time at the beach (we like Playa Flamingo the most).

Another option would be to take a tour which will take you to see Lanzarote's volcanic park - Timanfaya National Park, followed by a tour of La Geria, Lanzarote's wine region (with wine tasting included).

There are not many museums to visit in Fuerteventura, so the Salt Museum is good if you want to see something new, especially on a cloudy day when you don't feel like spending time on the beach. Afterward, you can have lunch at Los Caracolitos, a good restaurant with a beautiful view of a quiet beach.

Another scary and winding road in Fuerteventura is the one that will take you up to Entallada Lighthouse , where you can gaze at the horizon trying to spot the African continent, as this is the closest point to Africa all the Canary Islands.

• Driving in Fuerteventura & ideas for scenic drives

For people looking for an active holiday, with a lot of hiking and trekking adventures, Fuerteventura might not seem like an interesting destination at first.

Pico de la Zarza is the island's highest peak, at an altitude of 807 m, offering spectacular views over Playa de Cofete. The hike takes around 2 hours and you should start early in the morning because there is no shade along the way and by noon the sun is already too strong. Apply lots of sun lotion with high SPF, keep yourself hydrated, wear adequate shoes (we strongly advise against sandals or flip flops) and prepare yourself to be amazed by the view when you get to the very top of Fuerteventura.

The village of La Pared is popular among surfers and visitors who are looking for quiet places on the island. There are 2 popular beaches in the town of La Pared:  Playa La Pared and Playa del Viejo Rey. Many surfing schools come to Playa del Viejo Rey with their students because the conditions are ideal for learning.

Fuerteventura is one of the 8 main Canary Islands which are actually a part of Spain (even though they are located in the Atlantic Ocean west of Western Sahara and Morocco).

Because of their location, the weather is pleasant all year round on the Canary Islands and that’s exactly why we decided to travel to Fuerteventura in the middle of January 2022.

We must admit that we have always thought the Canaries to be a place mostly for retirees and families on package tours …

But we researched some of the best things to do in Fuerteventura and discovered that there are so many incredible beaches , cool hikes and unique experiences on the volcanic island!

Why visit Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura (like the other Canary Islands) is mostly known for its resorts but there’s so much more to the island than all you can eat-buffets and swimming pools.

It’s the oldest island of the Canaries dating back 20 million years to a volcanic eruption and the landscape really reflects that.

In the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is the second-largest island after Tenerife but it’s only the fourth most populated after Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote (which are also the top three islands in regards to the number of tourists visiting).

That means Fuerteventura is not as crowded as the other islands, making it very pleasant to explore.

Fuerteventura also has the longest white sand beaches in the Canary Islands – and they are gorgeous!

If beaches aren’t your thing, don’t worry. There are many natural sights to see inland and by the coasts, like volcanoes , caves, natural pools, sand dunes, mountains and hiking trails for all levels.

Fun fact: the name comes from the Spanish words “fuerte” (strong) and “ventura” (fortune) but it’s also a reference to the island’s strong winds.

Fuerteventura is part of the Canary Islands; a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean west of Western Sahara and Morocco in a region known as Macaronesia.

The island is 100 kilometres (62 miles) long and 31 kilometres (19 miles) wide, making it the second biggest of the Canary Islands.

There are generally three main areas where tourists stay in Fuerteventura: north, central and south.

The two main tourist areas of Fuerteventura are:

• Corralejo in the north.
• Morro Jable in the south.

Around Corralejo and Morro Jable is where most resorts, hotels, restaurants and tourist amenities are located.

Staying at either end of the island means you’ll stay near some fantastic beaches and other top attractions of Fuerteventura.

The downside is that you’ll naturally have a farther drive to the opposite end.

To make up for this, it can also make sense to stay more centrally on the island ( adlink: as we did ourselves ) – or to split up your time evenly between the north and the south and book accommodation at both ends.

Corralejo is the most popular place to stay in Fuerteventura for a reason.

Staying here means you’ll be close to the small beaches of Corralejo , but also be just minutes away from the famous Corralejo Sand Dunes – the “desert” of Fuerteventura with absolutely stunning beaches.

Also near Corralejo? The climbable Calderon Hondo volcano , the protected natural area Lobos Island as well as El Cotillo and lots of other beautiful beaches.

Corralejo itself is a cosy town with lots of great restaurants and supermarkets. If you’re looking for plant-based options in Fuerteventura, Corralejo is probably your best bet. We had delicious vegan ice cream from La Nativa when we visited.

North: El Cotillo – Beautiful, family-friendly beaches

El Cotillo is located in the northwest about 20 minutes of driving from Corralejo.

This small, sleepy town maintains a very chilled-out atmosphere even though its popularity is on the rise.

The beautiful beaches here are protected by reefs, meaning waves and currents are minimal. This is why El Cotillo is a great place to stay for families with children .

Also, prices can be lower here than in Corralejo while you’re still close to many incredible sights. Basing yourself in El Cotillo is indeed a fine option.

Staying in the eastern central part of the island comes with some obvious positives: transport from and to the airport is minimal and you’ll be easily connected with the rest of the island.

That means staying here can be a good choice if you don’t rent a car.

On the other hand, the eastern central part of Fuerteventura is generally not the most interesting part of the island for most tourists.

Apart from the natural pool of Caleta de Fuste , the beaches here aren’t Fuerteventura’s best (although they’re still fine!). That means you’ll have to travel to get to Fuerteventura’s top sights.

If you’re into golf , though, Caleta de Fuste is a great place to stay.

Central: Betancuria – The central mountains of Fuerteventura

If you like hiking or don’t mind driving to the beach, staying in the central mountains (also known as the Betancuria Massif) in the western part of Fuerteventura can make sense.

Betancuria is known as the most beautiful town on the island and the mountains around here are stunning.

The roads are very popular with road cyclists and the trails are great for hiking .

Staying in the central mountains also means you’ll be close to Ajuy Caves and the black sand beach , Arco de las Peñitas , as well as several famous viewpoints .

South: Costa Calma – Calm area for beach lovers

Staying in the south of Fuerteventura is heaven for people who love going to the beach. It’s especially popular with Northern Europeans (and Germans in particular).

As the name implies, Costa Calma is very calm . It’s smaller than some of the other resort towns of Fuerteventura and very laid-back.

The beaches in and near Costa Calma are veeery long , so you’ll always be able to find your own spot in the sand.

Sotavento (and its famed lagoon) starts from the southern end of Costa Calma, making Costa Calma a popular spot for wind and kitesurfers who love the conditions here.

There’s a twice-weekly market in Costa Calma held each Wednesday and Sunday.

South: Morro Jable – Family-friendly & peaceful beaches

Morro Jable is the southernmost place to stay in Fuerteventura and one of the most developed areas of the island.

If Morro Jable’s own beach Playa del Matorral isn’t enough, you’ll also be very close to Playa de Esquinzo as well as the famous Sotavento Lagoon .

The real unique draw down south though? The natural park of Jandía, home to Cofete – our favourite beach in Fuerteventura.

Getting here is not easy, but it’s much easier if you’re already staying in Morro Jable.

Morro Jable itself is a lively place with lots of supermarkets, cafés and restaurants. There’s a local market each Thursday.

1. Corralejo Sand Dunes – Desert by the ocean

Exploring the Corralejo Sand Dunes in the north of Fuerteventura is definitely one of the top things to do on the island.

The golden dunes in Corralejo Natural Park span over a huge area and they are in fact the largest sand dunes in the Canary Islands .

It’s an incredible experience walking in the small desert by the ocean – especially in the afternoon and around sunset.

We loved the natural park so much that we actually went there three times!

2. Corralejo beaches – Long white sand beaches

The Corralejo Natural Park also includes a coastline with kilometres of long white sand beaches that are perfect for sunbathing or water sports.

You can surf or kitesurf if you’re into water sports (El Medano and Flag Beach are especially great for that) or simply find a nice spot on a beach to relax and enjoy the incredibly turquoise waters .

We really liked the beautiful beach Playa del Moro in the southern part of Corralejo Natural Park.

Be careful if you go swimming as the currents are strong .

Parking tip: there are many free, marked parking spots along the FV-1 road next to Corralejo Natural Park making both the dunes and beaches easily accessible.

3. Lobos Island – Best day trip

One of the best day trips from Fuerteventura is to Lobos Island (Isla de Lobos) – a small protected volcanic island situated between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Only a 15-minute ferry ride away from Corralejo, you can:

• Chill out at the long beach Playa de la Concha de Lobos.
• Swim in the crystal clear lagoon at Puertito Isla de Lobos.
• Hike to the lighthouse Faro de Punta Martiño on the northern part of the island.
• Climb the volcano crater Montaña de la Caldera.

In other words, there’s something for everyone on Lobos Island whether you want to relax, be active – or both!

Visiting Lobos Island is an easy and cheap excursion that we can certainly recommend going on.

Booking your boat tour in advance makes sense as only a limited amount of people can visit Lobos Island each day.

We went with Naviera Nortour on their glass-bottomed boat and they also took care of the permit for us which was really nice.

4. Cofete Beach – Most remote and beautiful beach

Cofete Beach in the southwestern part of the island is without a doubt the best and most beautiful beach in Fuerteventura.

So what’s the catch? Cofete is very remote and difficult to reach.

The drive to Cofete Beach is not for the faint-hearted – but think about it as a wild adventure.

When you do finally get to Cofete, you will have almost 14 kilometres of beach with golden sand and a backdrop of the 800-metre-high mountain range in the Jandia Natural Park.

The remoteness and difficult access has made Cofete Beach underdeveloped in the best way possible. There are no hotels, no restaurants, no loud music – just lots and lots of sand and the sound of the ocean.

A truly unique beach experience !

Caution: ​​swimming here isn’t the greatest idea as the currents are very strong and the waves are unpredictable.

5. Calderon Hondo – Panoramic volcano views

Climbing to the top of the volcano Calderon Hondo is one of the coolest things to do in Fuerteventura.

The hike to the top of the 50,000-year old volcano is actually fairly easy (and free!) and you can have a look down the crater.

You will also have incredible panorama views of Lanzarote, Lobos Island , the ocean, the other volcanoes and the arid landscape of northern Fuerteventura.

6. Arco de las Peñitas – Secret natural stone arch

Arco de las Peñitas is a beautiful natural stone arch in Barranco de las Peñitas in the western/middle part of Fuerteventura.

It is not the easiest to find but when you do, it’s all worth it.

And the hike through the rocky, arid landscape is magnificent.

7. Playa de Sotavento – Amazing lagoon beach

The 10-kilometres long Sotavento beach is definitely a beach you must see when in Fuerteventura.

It’s a strong contender for the most spectacular beach in Fuerteventura – especially if you time your visit right.

At high tide , the water comes in and creates beautiful lagoons with sandbanks.

The first time we drove to Sotavento to see the lagoons, it was really windy and we hadn’t really thought about what that would mean…

But the lagoon was filled with kitesurfers !

It’s pretty cool to look at but unless you plan to come for the watersports yourself, make sure to go on a day without strong wind for the best pictures of the lagoons.

When we returned the second time in the early morning, we were almost alone and could enjoy the rising tide as well as the almost 300-metres long sandbank forming in front of Risco del Paso.

A stunning beach for sure!

8. Betancuria – Oldest town in Fuerteventura

Founded in the 15th century, Betancuria is the oldest town in Fuerteventura.

It was the capital until 1834 and while that’s no longer the case, it continues to be one of the best places to visit in Fuerteventura.

Situated in a mountainous region in the western part of Fuerteventura, this little village has traditional white houses , palm trees and a lovely square close to the Santa María church .

We enjoyed strolling around in the charming streets – and if they hadn’t closed just in front of us, it would have been wonderful to try the vegan burgers and crepes at La Sombra .

9. Ajuy Caves – Ancient natural caves

Visiting the historic Ajuy Caves (Cuevas de Ajuy) on the west coast of Fuerteventura close to Betancuria is one of the most popular things to do in Fuerteventura.

It’s like travelling back in time!

The Ajuy Caves are the oldest formations in the Canary Islands , dating back some 100 million years – can you believe it?

Geologically and paleontologically, they are really interesting because of the fossil dune formations (solidified sand from the deep sea) and the ancient sediments and fossils from the ocean.

What we think is really cool is the fact that you can actually walk into the big caves and explore them on your own.

The 500-metre long trail leading to the Ajuy Caves offers amazing views of the cliffs and the ocean and most likely also some cute chipmunks (but please don’t feed them and interfere with nature).

10. Playa Ajuy – Black sand beach

Playa Ajuy is the beach you will reach before the trail to the Ajuy Caves starts and it’s worth a visit for another reason: it’s a black sand beach .

If you haven’t seen one before, visiting the almost 300-metres long (and quite wide) Playa Ajuy is a unique beach experience.

The caves are interesting, and definitely merit a visit, but the path there and the black sand beach are certainly attractions in their own right , as well.

And for some reason, the area hasn’t turned into a big tourist trap (yet) – it’s free to visit!

Set aside about an hour for the hike and spelunking ( the exploration of caves! ), and more, of course, if you want to enjoy the beach while you are there.

Parking is free right next to the beach.

11. Piscina Natural (Caleta de Fuste) – Secret natural pool

Not far from the little resort town Caleta de Fuste, there’s a secret natural pool hidden in the rocks.

It goes under several different names: Piscina Natural, Caleta de Fuste rock pool and Krabbenfelsen Natural Pool. It’s all the same exceptional pool in the rocks.

When the tide is high, you almost cannot see the pool but when the tide is low, the water becomes calm, clear and emerald green . This is the best time to go for a swim.

Check the tides before arriving to make sure you’ll be able to see the rock pool. Come around an hour before the lowest tide to have the maximum amount of time there if you want to jump in.

Just going to the Piscina Natural to take a photo and head back to Caleta de Fuste might take 15 minutes but set aside at least 30 minutes if you plan to swim, or perhaps more if you like to relax and soak up the sun after your dip.

You can park just north of Caleta de Fuste town and walk from there easily. Look up “Piscina Natural” in that area on Google Maps for the precise location.

Shoe tip: the rocks are sharp so wear suitable footwear or at least thick sandals to avoid hurting your feet or slipping in flip-flops.

12. El Cotillo + surrounding beaches – Calm lagoon beaches

El Cotillo beach and the surrounding beaches are so incredibly pretty!

The many rocks create calm lagoons with shallow, clear turquoise water.

The shallow water also makes it ideal for families with small children to hang out at these beaches (and apparently a lot of nudists, too).

We found a wonderful lagoon close to La Concha (which is also an amazing beach!) where we relaxed for a few hours and later we enjoyed the gorgeous waters at El Cotillo beach.

There’s lots of free parking along all the roads close to the beaches, for example on Av. los Lagos or the big Aparcamientos (parking lot) close to La Concha.

13. Sicasumbre Astronomical Viewpoint – Stunning mountain views

The Sicasumbre Astronomical Viewpoint is one of the best places for stargazing in Fuerteventura.

It’s located 300-metres above sea level and surrounded by nature making the skies exceptionally clear at night. You will even find a sundial and a vertical clock up there.

Even if you don’t come for the starry skies, it’s worth making a quick stop at the observation point during the day if you find yourself in the southwest of the island.

It’s a great viewpoint with stunning views over the mountains and the inland in Fuerteventura.

It’s just a 5-minute climb from the parking lot and both parking and visiting the observation point is free.

Tip: bring extra layers of clothes if you stay after the sun goes down. And perhaps also if you visit during the day – the winds up there are pretty strong.

14. Mirador de Las Peñitas – Scenic viewpoint

Another scenic viewpoint is Mirador de Las Peñitas in the southwest, not far from Betancuria and Ajuy.

See the views over the arid mountain landscape and Barranco de las Peñitas with the fascinating natural stone arch ( Arco de las Peñitas ).

Stop for a few minutes and admire the landscapes if you are nearby.

15. Mirador de Guise and Ayose – Statues & expansive views

Just a few kilometers away from Mirador de Las Peñitas and a little north of Betancuria, you will find the ~ 4 meters tall Morro Velosa Statues at Mirador de Guise y Ayose (also known as Mirador Corrales de Guize).

You don’t particularly have to travel all the way just to see this spot but if you are in the area, it’s worth a quick stop.

The statues represent two of Fuerteventura’s former kings and being on one of the highest accessible points on the island, there’s a spectacular view over the volcanic landscapes.

16. Piscinas Naturales (Caleta del Marrajo) – Shallow lagoons

Lots of beautiful shallow, blue lagoons emerge at low tide in Caleta del Marrajo.

Find your own piece of sand or a rock to lay on and enjoy a swim in the rock pools for a couple of hours.

The Piscinas Naturales in Caleta del Marrajo are located in the northwestern part of Fuerteventura close to the red and white striped lighthouse named Faro del Toston (El Toston Lighthouse).

17. Aguas Verdes rock pools – Wild natural pools

You can find Aguas Verdes (meaning green pools ) on Fuerteventura’s wild west coast in Playa del Valle.

When searching for Aguas Verdes on Google Maps, you will be guided to a holiday complex so make sure to put in “ Playa del Valle ” as your destination.

When you get there, there’s a little beach and on both sides, you can go explore the shallow pools hidden between the rocks if you come at the right time.

We would recommend coming about an hour before low tide but even then the waves can be pretty crazy .

Be careful and use your common sense before you jump in. The tides can change very quickly.

After some climbing, we found two cool rock pools to the left of the beach. We only swam in one of them as the waves came crashing in on the other one but both were really beautiful and crystal clear .

Later, we explored the rocks to the right of the beach and found a few small pools there as well but we skipped jumping in as the tide had started to come back in.

Expect to spend 1-2 hours in Aguas Verdes depending on how much you want to climb on the rocks and if you want to swim.

Shoe tip: the rocks are pretty sharp so wear suitable footwear or at least thick sandals to avoid hurting your feet or slipping in flip-flops.

18. Windmills (Molinos) – Cute whitewashed windmills

If you find local old architecture interesting, you should check out Molinos De Villaverde in La Oliva .

These two well-preserved whitewashed windmills are super cute and it’s one of the best places to visit in Fuerteventura to get a traditional feel of how milling was once done.

There’s not much to do besides taking a few photos of the mills, so we would only recommend going here if you’re already in the area.

For the really cultural ones, consider visiting Molino de Valles De Ortega , Molino Del Dulcero , Tefia Windmill or even the museum Centro de Interpretacion de los Molinos if you can’t get enough of windmills.

19. Hiking on GR131 – The trail of the Canaries

If you’re into hiking, you will inevitably run into GR131 – a hiking trail that spans across seven of the Canary Islands, including Fuerteventura.

You can walk across the island all the way from Lobos Island in the north to Punta Jandía in the south.

Fuerteventura actually has the longest piece of GR131 with around 160 kilometres of trail over 9 stages.

If you (understandably enough) don’t care for all 160 kilometres, you can just hike any section of the route you find exciting.

We parked in the cosy little town of Páraja and hiked towards Betancuria as we had heard this particular stretch was beautiful – and it was!

After enjoying the dramatic volcanic landscapes and getting our steps in for the day (!), we turned around when we reached Vega de Rio Palmas (where you can also start the hike to Arco de las Peñitas ) as we had to get back to our car. A nice return trip of about 20 kilometres and a few hundred metres of elevation gain.

20. Water sports – Fly in the wind

If water sports are your thing, you’re in for a treat.

The strong Fuerteventura winds are ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing but you can also try your hand at surfing, jet skiing, parasailing, standup paddleboarding, scuba diving, snorkelling or go on a boat tour.

There’s something to do for all the active ocean lovers!

21. Faro de la Entallada – Remote scenic lighthouse

We probably wouldn’t have visited the lighthouse of Faro de la Entallada if we hadn’t stayed closeby at Playitas Resort (adlink) .

But the drive there is quite scenic and the views from the top are beautiful, so we can easily recommend visiting this rather remote part of Fuerteventura if you like a bit of an adventure .

Be aware that the final, short drive up to the lighthouse is steep and narrow at times. If you don’t feel comfortable, it’s possible to park your car at the bottom and walk up.

The lighthouse if free to visit and the road is open 24/7 .

Don’t visit Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura

We know it might be controversial but we urge you to not visit the Oasis Wildlife zoo.

Even though children (and adults) find it entertaining to watch wild animals up close and most zoos brand themselves as being important for education and conservation, they are not always as good as they seem…

Oasis Wildlife has shows where animals are performing as well as close interactions with some of the animals, like camel rides and swimming with sea lions. This can be very stressful for the animals.

And while it may seem harmless, these activities are not for the sake of the animals but for the profits they generate for the zoo…

With a few exceptions around the world, zoos are seldomly acting in the best interest of the animals as their first priority.

Don’t feed the chipmunks

Fuerteventura is full of adorable chipmunks (called Barbary Ground squirrels) and they are very interested in people – or at least in the food that they’ll get if they come close enough.

But there are signs everywhere saying you shouldn’t feed the squirrels.

Unfortunately, we saw so many people doing it anyway.

We know they are cute and even though it might be tempting to lure them closer with food, you should avoid feeding them .

First of all, it’s unhealthy for the chipmunks to eat human food or even nuts (as they are often salted).

Furthermore, the chipmunks are considered an invasive species in Fuerteventura and the authorities don’t want their population to grow as they actually cause damage to native animals and plants .

So take all the photos you want of the funny squirrels but don’t feed them .

Renting a car in Fuerteventura

Renting your own car in Fuerteventura is definitely the easiest way to get around and the best option for exploring the island.

You can pick it up at the airport and return it again when you leave Fuerteventura so it’s really easy.

There are numerous car rental companies with different price ranges .

We rented the absolute cheapest one from a company called Turisprime which ended up costing us around 185 EUR / 195 USD for 14 days (~ 13 EUR / 14 USD per day).

To be honest, it wasn’t the newest, most amazing car and we could have used a 4x4 car on some of the gravel roads, but it took us to all the best places on Fuerteventura so it was a nice budget option.

Parking in Fuerteventura is generally free and you can often park close to the attractions and beaches. Awesome, right?

Public transport in Fuerteventura

We actually didn’t use any public transportation in Fuerteventura but we have heard that there are few public transport options available.

However, there are public buses running between some of the towns. Check the Fuerteventura bus routes and timetables here .

The best way to get to Fuerteventura is by plane or ferry.

Fuerteventura is well-connected to the other Canary Islands by ferry to three different ports on the island.

There are also direct domestic and international flights to Fuerteventura’s airport Puerto del Rosario.

If you are putting together your own flight schedule and can’t find a direct flight, a stopover on mainland Spain might be worth checking out.

Alternatively, you can fly to one of the neighbouring islands (like Gran Canaria or Lanzarote) and take the ferry.

Best season to visit Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura can be visited in all seasons. But what’s the best season?

With 3,000 sunshine hours a year and a dry and warm climate, Fuerteventura is famous for its perfect weather all year round .

Fuerteventura doesn’t get much rain. However, it’s very windy most of the time.

The summer is dry, hot and the sun is really strong.

It’s also even windier, if you can imagine. Which is perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing and probably also pretty nice when you’re on the beach so you don’t overheat.

The hottest months are from June to October.

In the winter , Fuerteventura is warmer than the rest of Europe but it’s not super warm – again, also because of the wind.

Spring or autumn might be the best times to visit Fuerteventura for lovely beach days and warmer weather.

As with other destinations, you should avoid peak seasons and popular holidays if you would like to explore the best sights of Fuerteventura without the crowds (and save on flights and accommodation as well).

(These charts show weather averages from Lanzarote as the two islands have very similar weather patterns – especially in the north.)

Our weather experience

When we visited Fuerteventura in January, the weather was pleasant and optimal for hikes and other outdoor activities. We can imagine it’s fine for watersports, too.

In our first week on the island however, a calima (sandstorm from Sahara) came and clouded the sky, lowering the visibility and temperature for a few days followed by rare intense rain showers. This is a normal phenomenon that can happen throughout the year.

It was a little too cold if you ask us (we should have brought some extra warm clothes) but the following week was amazing and we had some hot and sunny days.

• How long to stay in Fuerteventura? Most people visit Fuerteventura for about a week on a packaged holiday. This is enough time to get a feel for the island and check out some of the main sights. We stayed for two weeks which allowed us to take in everything in a relaxed tempo with lazy days in-between exploring Fuerteventura’s attractions, mountain viewpoints and hidden beaches.
• Parking is generally free and easy to find making it ideal to rent a car to get around Fuerteventura on your own. The main roads are excellent and there’s almost no traffic. Be aware that some roads leading to attractions and beaches are gravel roads.
• Internet access / 4G can get spotty in some remote areas, for example at Cofete , Aguas Verdes or on some hikes. Downloading or carrying an offline map is a good idea.
• Check the tides before visiting the beaches, lagoons and rock pools if you want to be able to swim without putting your life in danger! In some places, the tide needs to be high and in other places, it needs to be low.
• Pack layers of clothing . As mentioned several times, Fuerteventura is windy and you never know when you might want a jacket. Don’t underestimate the sun though – wear sunscreen even when overcast.
• Electrical plugs in Fuerteventura are like most other standard European plugs with two round pins (type C, E and F and in some properties also the three pinned type L plug).
• Credit cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants but some smaller businesses might prefer cash so it cannot hurt to bring some Euros.

• Travel insurance (adlink) . Never travel without it!
• A good camera – here’s a guide to the gear we use .
• Sunscreen (adlink) .
• Clothes for both warm and cool weather . While it’s never really cold in Fuerteventura, it can get a bit chilly and very windy sometimes. In hindsight, we should have packed a few more pieces of warm clothing ourselves…
• Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers . There are so many places to go for beautiful hikes. You can find trails that take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.
• Swimwear and a towel .
• A refillable water bottle and snacks for hikes .

To minimise your impact during your visit, follow these guidelines:

• Bring your own drinking water in a refillable bottle.
• Avoid single-use plastics , including straws.
• Dispose of waste properly . While putting your trash in a nearby trashcan is convenient, wrappers and other small items are prone to get taken by the wind and end up in the ocean.
• Check your sunscreen before going in the water. Many brands contain oxybenzone and other chemicals that are harmful.
• Take only photos, leave only footprints . Let everything stay in its natural place.
• Respect wildlife.

The best times to visit my beloved Fuerte are September-November and April-May. December-January are nice enough but chilly in the evenings. Febuary-March is the rainy season (yes, it does rain!). June-August far too hot and touristy.

Hi Samir, good question! From memory, we did work from our room without any problems (although we didn’t make video calls), but we can’t speak of the exact internet speed. It could also easily vary between different buildings etc. Having a personal data plan could work as a backup, but there’s a slight “risk” that connectivity isn’t great all over the resort as it’s located remotely. Asking Playitas directly is probably your best bet 🙂

Hi Xenia, Thank you so much! Drone laws change quite rapidly and we can’t say with certainty how they’ve changed since we visited Fuerteventura. The main authority is the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority (AESA). What we can say though is that there are no national parks on Fuerteventura – but there are quite a few nature parks (parque natural) 🙂 Safe travels!

I’m sure you’ve all heard about Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the most visited islands of the Canary Islands. However, if you’re looking to enjoy incredible beaches, hike volcanoes, and explore national parks without the crowds , the best choice is Fuerteventura.

Its raw, unspoiled landscape gives you the sensation of being in the middle of a desert, all while on a small island surrounded by the ocean.

Why you should visit Fuerteventura?

You might be wondering : what makes Fuerteventura so special?

Well, as the second-largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura has an undeniable charm, thanks to its Mars-like landscapes, breathtaking sandy beaches, and majestic dunes.

The weather in Fuerteventura is a big draw for tourists, as it stays pleasant throughout the year. True to its name, the entire island is windy (sometimes a tad too windy, haha), but that’s what makes it an ideal destination for surfers and other water sports enthusiasts.

Getting around Fuerteventura with a Van

We read many blogs and guides before our trip, but none of them really emphasized that the easiest way to explore everything on the island is by renting a sleeping van.

WHY? Because many spots are only accessible after +45 mins of driving, depending on where you sleep, and on a one-week trip, the last thing you want to waste is your precious time.

Thanks to dear friends who let us know that we should rent a van!

Rent a van in Fuerteventura

Finding an available van for backpackers at a reasonable price in December was quite challenging, so it’s advisable to check at least a month in advance. Initially, we looked for vans at official rentals, but the prices were high or there were no vans available.

Subsequently, we explored private renters on www.yescapa.co m . This website is amazing, allowing you to rent a van from private individuals anywhere on the globe. We rented our van from an Argentinean couple who moved to Fuerteventura four years ago.

If you prefer renting a van from an official rental like FuerteCamperVan , you can find Volkswagen T6 starting from 80 euros/day . If you desire more space, there’s the option to rent a Fiat Ducato Maxi starting from 120 euros/day.

For those looking to save a bit of money and don’t mind embracing an old-school yet authentic road trip vibe, you can opt for a VW T3 starting from 75 euros/day from Vans and Sands .

Toilets and showers on the island

We’ve been told that there are many free showers and toilets on the island that we can use. While technically true, those showers aren’t always ideal as it highly depends on the time of your visit.

We visited Fuerteventura in December and it was a bit too cold and windy for outside showers in the evenings. So keep that in mind!

An alternative would be to either rent a van that has showers inside or schedule your trip during a warmer season when the weather is suitable for an outdoor shower.

Best time to visit Fuerteventura

What’s the best time to visit Fuerteventura? Good news: Fuerteventura has no winter . At least not the typical European winter. The coldest month in Fuerteventura is January, and you will still find 21°C (70°F) with sunny or cloudy sky during the day, and about 15°C (59°F) at night.

When the sun is out, you are totally fine in a T-shirt. When it’s cloudy, you better have a jacket on hand because the constant wind can be quite cold. 

The sea water temperature is around 15°C (59°F) in winter and during summer season isn’t higher than 21-23°C (70-74°F).

SURFING: Surfers can ride the waves of Fuerteventura anytime in the year. In winter (December to February) you can see many surfers on the island wearing neoprene suits. During the rest of the year you won’t need one.

AVOID THE CROWDS: If you want to enjoy the island with fewer tourists but still in very pleasant weather you can go anytime from November until May (with the exception of Christmas time, from 23/12 to 06/01).

ENJOY THE BEACHES: If you want to just chill on the beach or do water sports but you are looking for some hotter days, you may have to consider coming to the island in the peak season between June and October. During this time the maximum temperature is around 28°C (82°F) while the minimum only gets to 22°C (68°F).

Where to stay in Fuerteventura?

So, like I mentioned before, we went all-in on the van life for that ultimate freedom and flexibility vibe on our Fuerteventura Itinerary.

But hey, if you’re more about that chill vacation mode and just wanna hit up a couple of the spots I talked about in this guide, no worries—Fuerteventura’s got a bunch of awesome options for a laid-back holiday.

How much time do you need to visit Fuerteventura?

We spent 7 days in Fuerteventura, and we believe that’s the bare minimum. Of course, the whole island can be traveled in 3-4 days if you rush through everything, but I would never call that a relaxing holiday.

Fuerteventura has its own vibe. To fully experience life on this small island, you will need at least a week to explore the endless beaches, hike the volcanoes, have an afternoon coffee at a local café with surfers, and, in general, chill.

If you don’t want to skip anything and explore the attractions and natural beauties at a calm pace, you won’t make a mistake by deciding to spend 10 days in Fuerteventura.

Best things to see in Fuerteventura

In this chapter, we’ll uncover the best things to see on this enchanting Canary Island, from pristine beaches like Sotavento to hidden gems like Roque del Moro.

7-Day Fuerteventura Itinerary

Fuerteventura is a stunning island waiting to be discovered: here is the best itinerary for a 7-day adventure!

1.1 Puerto del Rosario – Arrival

Fuerteventura Airport , also known as Matorral Airport, is the main international airport on the island and it’s only 8,5 km away from Puerto del Rosario , the capital of the island. Since it’s on the way, this was our first top to walk around a bit in the town. If you want to do a day trip to the island of Lobos the boats are leaving from here as well.

1.2 Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo

After 20 minutes of driving along the coastline towards the north, you arrive at Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo. The entire natural park is essentially a vast area covered with soft sand, giving you the vibe that you’re in the middle of a desert.

Since it’s one of the most popular things to do in Fuerteventura, you can expect a bit of a crowd (yes, even in December!). If you want to avoid the crowd, come here around sunrise. It’s not only magical and beautiful, but you will be able to see the dunes without any footsteps, showcasing their highest beauty.

1.3 Corralejo

Originally a fishing village, Corralejo now comprises an old town and a new town area. The city buzzes with activity, being the largest holiday resort in Fuerteventura.

From surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing to snorkeling, the white sand beaches of Corralejo offer a plethora of activities. For lunch, several authentic local bars and restaurants await your choice.

2.1 Pop Corn beach

To reach the most unique beach in the Canary Islands, first, head towards Majanicho. You can access the small village from Corralejo (or Lajares). It’s like a time travel to the past, driving through dirt roads to reach “Popcorn Beach.”

But why is it called Popcorn Beach? Because the “sand” on this spectacular beach literally resembles popcorn. Even though it looks like tasty popcorn from your microwave, it’s not made from corn; it’s created from dead algae.

2.2 Lajares

Lajares is a typical Fuerteventura village, devoid of shiny buildings but adorned with charming restaurants and coffee shops. Regarding the area: the small village is surrounded by volcanoes, offering numerous great hiking options such as the Calderón Hondo Volcano trail or the trail leading to El Águila beach.

I recommend trying a local restaurant in Lajares with traditional cuisine, or opt for a normal restaurant, as the village boasts a good variety of different restaurants and cafés.

2.3 Calderon hondo – volcano hike + sunset

The island’s most visited volcano is right next to Lajares (you can park your van at the end of the village; there is a small parking area). From here, take a local trail to the volcano’s cone (don’t worry, all the routes are perfectly marked!).

The hike to the summit takes around 2 hours at a casual speed. Calderón Hondo is only 278 meters high with a 70-meter deep crater in the middle. It’s part of the 8 volcanic cones of the Bayuyo alignment, while the other cones are less accessible.

As is typical throughout Fuerteventura, it’s windy here as well. However, when we reached the summit, the wind was exceptionally strong, so keep that in mind when bringing a cap or sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun—something we highly recommend!

Don’t forget to carry water; the trail gets fairly steep at one point , providing a good cardio workout.

Another tip is to commence the hike around 2 PM to catch the sunset at the top! The view is truly breathtaking; you can even spot the island of Lobos.

3.1 Mirador Morro Velosa

Mirador Morro Velosa offers a breathtaking view from almost 700 m of altitude as it is considered the best viewpoint on the island. The 38 km long trip takes 35 mins from Lajares.

On a clear day you can even see Corralejo from the top. Unfortunately, the viewpoint was closed when we were there.

3.2 Betancuria Old town

After a 10-minute drive from Morro Velosa viewpoint, you reach the most significant town on the island with a 600-year-old history.

Betancuria is renowned as the historical capital of Fuerteventura. Among its notable buildings, the church of Santa María holds significance as the first church constructed in a town in the Canary Islands.

For lunch you can find good restaurants in Betancuria, before you continue your trip in the afternoon at the natural park next to the town.

3.3 Parque Rural de Betancuria / Barranco de las Penitas (National Park + hike up to the arch)

If there’s just one thing you must see on your Fuerteventura itinerary, it’s Arco de las Peñitas —an enchanting natural archway and now one of the most sought-after photo spots in the Canary Islands.

Nestled in the Barranco de las Penitas, it’s considered the “Mecca” for climbers, boasting numerous boulders and rock formations that are perfect for climbing.

The park gives home to several animals which you will meet on your way to the arch for sure. 

Honestly, the Arch is not easy to find; we almost gave up after an hour of walking when a local family helped us find the way to the arch.

Good footwear (non-slippery shoes) is a must for this hike , as you have to climb on rocks, and at the arch, it’s very steep. With poor physical condition, I would not recommend doing this hike.

As always, bring enough water with you and a cap and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

4.1 Monumento Natural Cuevas de Ajuy

The Monumento Natural de Ajuy is a protected area along the west coast, showcasing 120 million-year-old rocks and caves, older than the Canary Islands themselves.

This natural monument is recognized for its geological significance and stunning beauty, offering visitors the chance to explore ancient coastal cliffs and unique rock formations.

To reach the caves, you have three options: by car, by bus, or on foot. If you opt to walk, the trail begins at Ajuy beach.

To find it, head north from the beach and follow the marked road. Descend a steep staircase to access the two connected caves for exploration.

For the stone staircase make sure you wear not slippery footwear. It will take around an hour to properly visit the caves.

The town of Pájara, the second oldest on the island after Betancuria, stands out with its relatively “green” landscape, in contrast to much of Fuerteventura.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Regla, located on the main square alongside the Town Hall and a Cultural Center, boasts a distinctive stone facade in Mexican style, setting it apart from other churches on the island.

Additionally, if you visit Fuerteventura in August, Pájara hosts an extensive festival featuring various activities.

4.3 Grand Tarajal

Located just 22 km from Pájara (around a 20-minute drive), the town of Gran Tarajal is renowned for hosting the best urban beach in Fuerteventura.

It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants while appreciating the beautiful beach. Spend the afternoon and sunset at the beach, simply chilling and soaking in the surroundings.

5.1 Faro de la Entallada

Situated just 11 km from Gran Tarajal, note that the final stretch of the road is quite steep. At the road’s end, you’ll find a spacious car park and a viewpoint accessible by walking down a narrow rocky path.

The breathtaking view from the cliff’s edge offers a unique perspective, as this spot is the closest point on the Canary Islands to Africa, a mere 100 km away. For an intimate experience of the view, consider arriving at sunrise, as we did.

5.2 Playa de la Pared

This beach is a popular surfing destination since it has the perfect wind and waves. It’s located on the west coast of Fuerteventura.

It’s more like a remote beach, not for family vacation, but ideal for a more adventurous Fuerteventura itinerary. It’s 250 m long and even if you don’t practice any water sports, it’s definitely worth a visit!

5.3 Punta de Guadalupe

Punta de Guadalupe graces the west coast of Fuerteventura, featuring a captivating rocky tongue where crashing waves create a mesmerizing spectacle.

Despite its secluded nature, it offers a breathtaking sunset, casting a magical hue over the rugged landscapes. Be prepared for strong winds ; during my visit, the gusts were so forceful that I nearly felt blown away by their strength.

5.4 Sotavento

Sotavento beach emerges as one of the island’s most captivating natural wonders. It invites you to dedicate an entire day to basking in its beauty from sunrise to sunset—a decision you won’t regret!

The sheer vastness of the beach is awe-inspiring, yet its character is shaped by the ebb and flow of the tide. During our visit at high tide, we traversed small sand islands in the lagoon , revealing a dynamic landscape. At low tide, the beach transforms into an expansive sandbank, stretching as far as the eye can see.

As is customary across the island, the brisk winds prevail here too , making it a haven for kitesurfers. The shoreline was dotted with enthusiasts, adding to the lively atmosphere as we strolled along the beach.

Adding to the magic, there’s a camper van car park right on the beach—an ideal setting for our most memorable camping experience.

6.1 Playa Sotavento 

After sleeping near this beach, don’t skip the sunrise at Playa Sotavento! It’s definitely worth it, and possibly one of our favourites on this Fuerteventura itinerary.

6.2 Playa El Maltorral – Morro Jable

Playa El Maltorral is the go-to for tourists, and it’s crazy wide—like, more than 50 meters wide! You can take the longest beach walks here.

Morro Jable, on the other hand, is your typical holiday town, packed with loads of hotels and restaurants right by the beach.

6.3 Playa de Los Ojos

About an hour’s drive from Morro Jable, you stumble upon this little gem of a beach with the famous Instagram bay! Once you park up on the cliffs, a descent to the sandy beach awaits.

Similar to Sotavento, this beach wears a different look depending on the tide. During low tide, you can waltz into the bay without a splash, but when the tide’s high (like during our visit), crossing the beach turns into a game of dodging waves. That’s why, in the end, we had to forfeit our bay adventure—didn’t want to risk a full-on December soak!

6.4 Faro Punta de Jandía

The lighthouse sits at the extreme southern edge of the island. Making the journey from Morro Jable to the village of El Puerto de la Cruz involves quite a trek on a dirt road.

The duration of this trip greatly hinges on your car’s performance—our adventure with an old T4 turned it into a slower-than-usual journey.

This road leads to the small village, the most populated within the Jandía Natural Park. Here, you’ll find cozy restaurants to grab a bite or a drink. Venture just one more kilometer, and you’ll reach the lighthouse, marking the culmination of the scenic drive.

7.1 Playa de Cofete

En route to Punta de Jandía, you’ll encounter a crossroad where the other path leads to Cofete. Opting for this road, you’ll find yourself in the Jandía Natural Park, nestled in the northern part of Jandía island and the southern part of Fuerteventura.

Playa de Cofete stands out as the island’s most majestic and remote beach , akin to an endless road to heaven with its over 12 kilometers of pristine white sand.

Few houses and decent roads grace the landscape here— the entire area remains raw and untouched. And that’s precisely why it’s so stunning.

7.2 Roque del Moro

Roque del Moro, a colossal monolith, graces the southern end of the beach. Despite its grandeur, it’s not as “Instagram famous,” possibly owing to the considerable walk required to get a closer look.

This area tends to be wonderfully tranquil, as only a handful of tourists make the effort to trek all the way (or they opt for a 4X4).

If you’re seeking the serenity of this remote beach along with natural pools during low tide, Roque del Moro is the ideal spot for you.

7.3 El Martorral – Airport

Well, it’s a wrap, and sadly, it’s time to head home.

Fuerteventura is a destination full of charming secrets. From its incredible natural pools to its volcanoes and other-worldly landscapes. Not to mention the incredible beaches in Fuerteventura! Some say they are the most beautiful in all of the Canary Islands… I can tell you that you have chosen your holiday destination very well. Now it's time to plan your trip to Fuerteventura so that everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Below you can read information about the best time to travel to Fuerteventura, how many days I recommend spending on the island, what to see and do, where to stay in Fuerteventura, the best tours, etc. At the end of the article you will find a personalized map of Fuerteventura.

Best time to travel to fuerteventura.

Fuerteventura is a popular destination any month of the year. The island receives tourists, both domestic and foreign, every month. This is because temperatures always range between 20 (68°F) and 26ºC (79°F).

However, if you are interested in knowing what is the best time to travel to Fuerteventura, the answer is, September or October. During these months there aren’t crowds of tourist flocking to Fuerteventura and, in addition, it isn’t as windy as other months of the year.

In case you did not know, the wind in Fuerteventura can be very strong. If your intention on the island is not to engage in sports such as windsurfing or kitesurfing, the wind can even bother you quite a bit on your trip. For this reason, for some people it is important to travel to Fuerteventura when it’s less windy.

As for high and low season, you should know that the months when there is a greater influx of tourists are from November to March, July and August.

How to get to Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Being an island, you can get to Fuerteventura by ferry or by plane. It’s more common to fly to Fuerteventura but if you are already in the Canary Islands or you are interested in taking your car from mainland Spain, the ferry can be a good option.

Flights to Fuerteventura

There are direct flights from different Spanish cities (Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Valencia, Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Bilbao, Malaga, etc.) and many European cities.

The company that offers the cheapest flights to Fuerteventura is Ryanair. In any case, I recommend checking the specific dates of your trip on Skyscanner to find the cheapest flights. I always recommend searching for flights using this platform, however, when buying them, I recommend doing it through the airline’s website.

Travel to Fuerteventura by ferry

If you want to check ferry prices and schedules from different places, I recommend using Ferryhopper . Through this platform, you will be able to see which shipping company offers the best price this specific journey.

It is a good option if you are already on another Canary Island, such as Gran Canaria or Lanzarote, and wish to continue your trip by visiting Fuerteventura.

🏥 Remember it is very important to purchase travel insurance for Spain if you don’t have medical coverage in this country. I always use and recommend the company Heymondo, where I can offer you a 5% discount on your travel insurance .

How long you should travel to Fuerteventura for

You may be wondering how many days you should spend in Fuerteventura to get to know the island. I recommend planning a 7-day trip. I spent a week and had the opportunity to tour the entire island without rushing anything. Even so, I still had some places I didn’t get to visit, which I’m looking forward to going on a next trip.

This does not mean that if you visit Fuerteventura for fewer days, you will not have the opportunity to enjoy the island. Absolutely! You will simply have to make a smaller selection of places to see in Fuerteventura or make the most out your time on the island. In fact, I would say that 4 days is good enough to visit plenty of places on the island.

Places to add to your Fuerteventura travel guide

Fuerteventura is one of driest places in Spain, therefore, its landscapes are quite deserted. Within its geography, you will find beautiful dunes, spectacular beaches, natural pools and several volcanoes and mountains.

Below you can read about the best places to visit in Fuerteventura.

One of the places I enjoyed the most on my trip to Fuerteventura was Lobos Island. You can visit this small islet from Corralejo, a town located in the north of the island. You just have to book a ferry trip to Lobos Island . I recommend purchasing the ticket through this platform because, for little money, they are also take care of processing the necessary authorization to visit Isla de Lobos.

If you want to get to know the most beautiful beaches, I recommend visiting Cofete Beach, Sotavento Beach, Viejo Rey Beach, Castillo Beach, Escalera Beach, Popcorn Beach, Del Mal Nombre Beach, Ojos Beach and Ajuy Beach. Beyond beaches, other places that you cannot miss are Calderón Hondo Volcano, Corralejo Natural Park, the Villaverde Windmills, Vallebrón Viewpoint (with views of the Tindaya Mountain), the Natural Pools of Aguas Verdes, Guise and Ayose Viewpoints, Barranco de las Peñitas (don’t miss Arco de las Peñitas), the Ajuy Caves, the Astronomical Viewpoint of Sicasumbre and Roque del Moro.

As for towns, I recommend visiting Betancuria, El Cotillo and Corralejo.

How to get around in Fuerteventura

The best way to visit Fuerteventura is by car, therefore, I recommend renting a car. If this is not an option, you can visit Fuerteventura by public transport but you will be quite limited.

Renting a car in Fuerteventura

In this Fuerteventura travel guide, I recommend renting a car in Fuerteventura through Cicar or Cabrea Medina. Both companies are part of the same conglomerate. I recommend them because, unlike other companies, they do not ask for a security deposit and the rental already includes comprehensive insurance. Also, the price is very competitive. Both companies are very trustworthy.

The only problem is that, during high season, these companies usually sell out very quickly, unless you rent the vehicle well in advance. If this is the case, I advise you to use Discover Cars to find the best car rental rates.

As for the type of vehicle, it is advisable to opt for an all-wheel drive since there are many dirt roads, such as the one that leads to Cofete Beach. However, with an ordinary car you can manage. You’ll just have to be more careful.

Visit Fuerteventura using public transportation

If you are not able to rent a vehicle in Fuerteventura, I recommend using public transport. The most used means of transport, for those who are not going to move around the island in their own vehicle, is the bus. The bus network connects the main towns on the island. It also connect some towns to some beaches.

On Tiadhe’s website (intercity transport company in Fuerteventura) you can check the bus routes and schedules . The average price is €1.50 per ticket, therefore, it is the cheapest way to get around Fuerteventura.

Best tours in Fuerteventura

As mentioned before in this Fuerteventura travel guide, renting a car is the best way to visit the island. However, if you are not going rent a car on your trip, I recommend booking organized tours. Below you can see the best tours in Fuerteventura.

– Lobos Island Catamaran Day Trip . A great way to visit Lobos Island is by booking this organized Catamaran tour. Instead of taking the ferry and going on your own, you can go to the island by catamaran, visit El Puertito and do activities such as snorkeling, kayaking or paddle surfing. Includes open bar for drinks and paella to eat. The boat departs from Corralejo.

– La Oliva, Betancuria and Corralejo Dunes Day Trip . Thanks to this organized tour, you will be able to visit the incredible dunes of Corralejo, the beautiful town of Betancuria, Barranco de Las Peñitas, Sotavento Beach, Ajuy Beach and La Oliva. You will be able to get to know a lot of the best places to visit through this guided minibus tour. The tour departs from the northern part of the island.

– Corralejo, El Cotillo and Ajuy Day Trip . If you are going to be staying in the southern part of Fuerteventura, you will surely be interested in this tour of the northern part of the island. You will be taken to Ajuy, El Cotillo and Corralejo Natural Park. The tour includes an appetizer where you can taste cheese, mojos, jams and craft beer.

– 4×4 tour through the Cofete Natural Park . Thanks to this off-road tour you will be able to visit Cofete Beach, Villa Winter, Punta Jandía Lighthouse and several viewpoints. The excursion includes a traditional meal. This is one of the best activities in Fuerteventura.

– Fuerteventura Dolphin & Whale Watching Speedboat Trip . This is one of the most unique activities to do in Fuerteventura. You can observe marine animals in their natural habitat. Thanks to this tour, you will travel along the coast of the Jandía peninsula and, if lucky, see incredible marine mammals.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

One of the hardest decisions to make when planning a trip to the island is choosing where to stay. My recommendation, if you are going to spend at least 4 nights on the island, is to split your stay in two different hotels, one in the north and one in the south. If you are going to spend less time in Fuerteventura, or if you do not want to change hotels, I recommend looking for a hotel in a central area.

Areas and hotels I recommend

In the northern part, I recommend staying in Corralejo. I spent several nights at the Avanti Lifestyle Hotel and loved it. The decoration is beautiful and it is located in front of the beach. It also has a very good restaurant.

Another very charming town in the north of the island worth staying in is El Cotillo. If you choose to sleep here, you’ll be close to plenty of beautiful beaches. I recommend staying in El Hotelito del Cotillo , a very charming hotel. If you are looking for an apartment in Fuerteventura, I recommend Casa Nami , located in this same town.

In the southern part of Fuerteventura, I recommend sleeping in Tarajalejo or Costa Calma. I stayed in R2 Bahía Playa hotel, located in front of Tarajalejo beach. I had a very comfortable and pleasant stay. In Costa Calma, I recommend INNSiDE by Meliá Fuerteventura .

Lastly, if you are looking for a hotel in a central area, I recommend Caleta de Fuste, a town located quite close to the airport. I recommend taking a look at La Perla de Bahia Sol , an apartment with very good reviews. If you prefer a hotel, Barceló Royal Level Family Club is a good option, especially if you are traveling to Fuerteventura with family.

Once you know how many days you are going to spend on the island, I recommend planning an itinerary with very clear idea about what you are going to visit each day. This way, you will make the most of your time in Fuerteventura.

Let’s start with the food! During your visit to Fuerteventura, you have to taste the famous potatoes with mojo sauce. So delicious! Apart from being very tasty, it is also a very cheap dish. Another local product of Fuerteventura is Majorero cheese. delicious! Don’t forget to eat fresh fish and try gofio.

– What to take with you on your trip to Fuerteventura:

You may be wondering what clothes to pack on your trip to Fuerteventura. The days are usually warm throughout the year; however, at night it can get a bit cool, especially in winter or if it’s windy. Therefore, it is important that you take warm clothing with you, such as a jacket or long pants. As for footwear, I recommend taking sports shoes and flip-flops that grip well.

– Travel insurance for Fuerteventura:

Unless you are an EU resident, you won’t have medical coverage in Fuerteventura. Apart from covering medical expenses, travel insurance offers coverage for luggage, tech, transportation, etc. If you want to enjoy extra peace of mind, I recommend purchasing travel insurance. If you are not going to rent a car in Fuerteventura but you are not sure whether you are going to use public transportation, you can opt for private transport. Is Fuerteventura worth visiting: quick answer

Fuerteventura is the ideal Canary Island if, above all, you love beautiful sandy beaches and guaranteed sunshine. But there’s even more to discover and enjoy: wide open spaces, water sports and some fascinating cultural sites!

Reason 1: for the magnificent beaches

To start with, Fuerteventura is renowned for having the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands. It has plenty of big ones, with fewer tourists, so you can enjoy some of the quieter corners of the beach.

Here you’ll find..:

• Huge white-sand beaches for walking or soaking up the sun
• Beaches that change completely at low tide with the creation of lagoons , ideal for a quiet refresher.
• Smaller coves with sand dunes
• Beaches of black sand or grey pebbles

The best known is De Sotavento lagoon beach , you may have already seen it in photos, as it’s often on postcards and instagram accounts!

One of our favorites for landscape lovers is Playa del Viejo Reyes in La Pared, with its magnificent volcanic rock cliffs.

And for a surreal impression, you can also enjoy a beach in the middle of sand dunes!

And if you’re not looking for a swim or a lie down, but you like something original, explore one of the popcorn beaches, where the corals give a surprising impression!

You have a wide choice of beautiful beaches. And for the best views, we recommend renting a car. Driving in Fuerteventura is very easy.

• There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

Reason 2: for sunny weather all year round

Fuerteventura’s highest point is around 800m above sea level. This means that mountains don’t stop clouds… and it doesn’t rain. The downside is that vegetation is extremely limited. Don’t come to this island if you’re looking for a tropical forest… But the big advantage is that you’re guaranteed sunshine.

The weather is often described as eternal spring. Every month of the year (yes, even in winter), you can enjoy beautiful blue skies and warm temperatures (around 20°C in winter). So, if you need your Vitamin D fix, this is a great option for you.

Be warned, however, that it’s also quite windy on this island. Temperatures are higher and winds are usually stronger in summer.

For its long sandy beaches, gastronomic and nightlife scene and activities. We recommend..:

To start with the dolphins, we loved our boat trip from Morro Jable in the south. Not only did we see pilot whale dolphins, but we also enjoyed views of the Fuerteventura mountains, Morro Jable and its lighthouse. Our article on dolphin watching on the island.

There are tours in catamarans, speedboats and more traditional boats. We chose the more classic boat for its comfort and the ability to move around on board. We enjoyed it very much:

Reason 4: for the feeling of wide-open spaces

Once outside the tourist towns, Fuerteventura is very sparsely built. The environment is not hospitable, and without water, you’ll be admiring wide-open spaces. We like it that way, seeing almost nothing but nature and very few human constructions.

Among the most beautiful places to admire these immensities, find yourself:

• The dunes of Corralejo
• Cofete and its mountains falling into the sea
• Watchtowers in the mountains
• Lava rock fields

Reason 5: For fun activities on land

And so, thanks to all these wide-open spaces, you have a huge playground. Wherever you stay, you’ll find great excursions with varying degrees of adrenalin to have fun and enjoy the scenery.

Reason 6: for cultivation

Okay. Fuerteventura is not the richest in terms of cultural landscapes, but you can find some interesting places. We had a great time visiting them:

• The old center of Betancuria, the former capital of Fuertentura, with its beautiful church.
• The salt marshes, so important to the island’s development and so photogenic!
• The archeological site of La Atalayita, with its houses built of lava rock in the middle of a flow.
• The cheese museum , in the heart of the island, where the visit ends with a tasting session
• Sculptures all over the island. The quantity is impressive!

Reason 7: Ease of exploration

Some of you may just want to sit on a beach and discover just 2 or 3 places. Organized tours will suffice. But if you’re a little more curious, we highly recommend renting a car to explore the island. The roads are generally in excellent condition. There is little traffic. It’s very easy to drive and parking spaces are quite large, which is rare in Europe.

Reason 8: For the island of Lobos

Yes, talking about another island may sound a bit odd, but the island of Lobos is a tiny volcanic pile to the north of Fuerteventura with very few buildings. It’s a magnificent reserve with several ecosystems. In our opinion, this is one of Fuerteventura’s not-to-be-missed excursions.

Here you’ll find a large volcano, numerous small cones, a lighthouse and a surprising lagoon that is a reserve for migratory birds. We loved walking around, exploring the different landscape types and color contrasts. To get there, you can take..:

• the 15-minute ferry – reserve your seats

Why visit certain towns in Fuerteventura

On the whole, Fuerteventura’s towns are not as historic as those on the mainland. We don’t really come to the island to visit them. But here are some of our thoughts on some of them.

Is Puerto del Rosario worth a visit?

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura. But it’s also one of the island’s least touristy towns. If you have a little time, we enjoyed our half-day with it:

• All the statues along the sea and in the city
• The non-touristy aspect of the city to see how the locals live
• The beautiful downtown church
• Wall and floor paintings
• Playa Chica beach and the whale skeleton
• Old lime kilns by the sea (e.g. Los Hornos de la Familia Morales).

Is Morro Jable worth a visit?

Morro Jable is quite an interesting town. We really liked it:

• The opportunity to take a very long walk along the seafront, with your feet in the sand
• The vibrancy and relaxed, festive atmosphere of the Old Town
• Good restaurants

But if you’re not staying there, Morro Jable is often the starting point for exploring Cofete or taking a boat out to see the dolphins!

Is Corralejo worth a visit?

Yes, Corralejo is surely one of Fuerteventura’s most interesting tourist towns. We loved the old town by the sea, the fake popcorn on the beaches, the atmosphere, the views of Lobos Island and the nearby sand dunes.

Is Betancuria worth a visit?

Yes, Betancuria is well worth a visit. As listed in reason 6 above, Betancuria is one of the most interesting towns to visit on Fuerteventura. Its old town has a lot of charm.

Fuerteventura or Lanzarote: where to go?

We love the 2 islands. If you prefer beautiful beaches and fewer crowds, choose Fuerteventura. If you like lots to do and volcanoes, choose Lanzarote. See our comparison between these 2 islands .
