Troubleshooting, how to fix “blocked plug-in” pdf safari error on mac.

Safari Blocked Plug-in Error when downloading PDF files on Mac

Have you ever tried to open a PDF in Safari on the Mac, only to be hit with a “Blocked Plug-In” message in the browser, rather than the PDF?

While sometimes this can relate to having the Adobe Acrobat plugin installed on the Mac, it can also be an issue with Safari and loading some PDF files in general. Perhaps it’s just a bug, or an overzealous security measure, but if you find the “Blocked Plug-in” message in Safari on the Mac when attempting to load a PDF, and you need to have access to that PDF, here’s one way to get around the error message and open the PDF file.

This is a bit of a workaround for loading a PDF file despite the “Blocked Plug-in” Safari message, but it works, and you’ll have access to the PDF.

Loading a PDF on Mac Despite the “Blocked Plug-in” Safari Error

All you need to do is download the PDF file locally to your Mac, then open it in Preview instead of Safari.

  • Hit the Back button in Safari to find the preceding link to the PDF file
  • Right-click on the link to the PDF then choose “Download Linked File” (or “Download Linked File As…”

Download the PDF manually from Safari

  • Navigate to the “Downloads” folder in the Mac Finder or by opening it through the Dock
  • Locate the PDF file and double-click on it to open it directly into Preview

Now you have loaded the PDF, without using Safari, and bypassing the plug-in blocked message.

While the PDF loads into Preview instead of Safari, this trick also has the advantage of downloading the PDF file from Safari to the Mac locally, which you might be looking to do anyway.

Did this work for you to access the PDF file despite the Blocked Plug-in message in Safari? Do you use another approach, or did you find another solution to resolving the Blocked Plug-in message? Let us know in the comments.

How do I set Safari on Mac OS X to show PDFs using Preview instead of Adobe Reader?

I shouldn't have installed Adobe Reader on my Mac. But now that I have, how do I set Safari to (go back to) show PDFs using Preview (as the inline PDF display plug-in) instead of Reader? Do I need to uninstall Reader?

Update : I went ahead and uninstalled Adobe Reader . (I grew tired of constant reminders to update something I wasn't using.)

The "Right Way" to accomplish this is actually within the Adobe Reader app. Just go into preferences, click Internet, and uncheck Display PDF in Browser. Simple and non-destructive, since Adobe will almost certainly attempt to "repair" itself when it notices the plugin file missing at the next security update.

  • This sounds like the right answer, but I can't verify since I uninstalled Adobe Reader since posting this question. –  Daryl Spitzer Jul 26, 2010 at 3:57

It is neither necessary nor sufficient to uninstall the Adobe Reader. I went also through this process and finally succeeded by (re)moving

  • I, of course, had to restart Safari after deleting this file. –  Daryl Spitzer Nov 9, 2009 at 20:20

You should be able to "Get Info" on a PDF (cmd+I or right click the file) and then set the default viewer for that file type.

Insomnic's user avatar

  • But this launches Preview as a separate process whereas it is possible to use Preview as an inline reader directly in Safari. –  Uwe Honekamp Nov 9, 2009 at 19:18
  • Right. I'll clarify my question. –  Daryl Spitzer Nov 9, 2009 at 20:15
  • Daryl Spitzer is asking about the Acrobat plugin, not PDFs opened from the finder. –  Josh Nov 9, 2009 at 20:43
  • The default setting on the file itself is what Safari uses. Setting the file within the Finder will also set it for Safari (unless Acrobat is over-riding that - which would be new to me). If you want to keep the plugin installed, I believe the following terminal command sets it as the inline viewer: defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool NO –  Insomnic Nov 9, 2009 at 21:21
  • Insomnic, can you verify that Safari & Adobe Reader honor the Finder setting, and verify that the default setting works as you describe? (I've already deleted the plug-in and would rather not re-install it.) –  Daryl Spitzer Nov 9, 2009 at 21:37

3 Easy Ways to Save a Webpage as a PDF Using Safari on a Mac

Here are three quick and easy ways to export a website as a PDF on your Mac. You can even get rid of all the ads beforehand!

Surfing the internet will lead you to interesting reads that you may want to return to later or save as a future reference. There are many ways to do this—from bookmarking the page, to adding it to your reading list, to taking screenshots, or to printing the entire webpage.

With your Mac, however, you can easily export a webpage as a PDF using Safari and save it to your documents. Here’s how to do it.

1. Save a Webpage Exactly How It Looks on Safari

If you want to quickly convert a Safari webpage into a PDF on your Mac, without the need to customize it, do the following:

  • While on Safari , go to the menu bar and click File .
  • Scroll down to Export as PDF .
  • In the popup window, rename the file and choose the save location.

Remember that saving a webpage in this manner will give you an exact PDF version of the webpage, which includes all the menu bars, buttons, ads, and reading suggestions. Though, some of the formatting may change slightly in the PDF to how it appears on your screen.

2. Save a Webpage Without the Distractions

If you find all the ads and buttons unappealing and distracting, you can create a clean PDF copy of the webpage with all the clutter. To do this:

  • From Safari , click View > Show Reader .
  • Then repeat the above process: Go to File > Export as PDF > Save .

Aside from the cleaner look, saving a webpage from Reader View renders the PDF in pages instead of a single scrollable strip, similar to how saved pages look when you save full-page screenshots of webpages on your iPhone .

3. Save a Customized PDF Using Safari

If you only want to save specific sections of the webpage instead of the entire thing, you can use this method:

  • In Safari , go to File > Print .
  • Check the specific pages that include the sections you want to save on the page preview.
  • Under Pages , input the pages of the PDF you want to save.
  • Click the dropdown menu at the bottom, then choose Save as PDF .
  • Rename and choose the file destination before hitting Save .

Like saving web pages from Reader View, saving your PDF in this manner will give you a PDF with several pages instead of a single strip of webpage screenshot.

If you don’t want to include the webpage’s background, just uncheck the box beside Print backgrounds . This is helpful if you plan to print the PDFs and don’t want your printer to waste a ton of ink on the background.

You can also get rid of the headers and footers by removing the check mark beside Print headers and footers .

Keep a Copy of Your Favorite Webpages for an Accessible Read

With Safari, not only can you save PDF copies of your web pages for later reading, you can even customize them to keep a reader-friendly version of it. With this feature, you can save web pages for offline reading for a more accessible read.

I have that plugin and it's great. It is faster than downloading it and waiting for preview to open. Adobe Reader 9 is horribly slow. It takes almost as long as photoshop to start up.

I found it odd, but Acrobat 7.0 deleted the Shubert plugin I had. While I prefer the Acrobat plugin because it has more features, I still would have liked to been asked before something was deleted from my system.

Anyone know how to get rid of the Acrobat plugin? I uninstalled Acrobat using the included uninstaller, but now when I click a PDF in Safari, I just get a blank window. How do I make it download the file and open in Preview, like it used to?

Nope, not there. I have a lot of plugins in there, but nothing Adobe or Acrobat-related.

Duff-Man says...I do not think it is the Safari prefs - I opened mine in Plist Editor and did not see anything that related to Adobe....it may be another pref file like com.apple.launchservices.plist though... I personally quite like Adobe Reader 7 so far - it is very fast and displays all pdf's I have tried (I have had a few that display blank in Preview) so I have no real reason not to use it at this point.....oh yeah!
