Washington, D.C. Guide: Planning Your Trip

direct travel washington dc

You've learned about Washington, D.C., in school and seen images of the city in dozens of movies and television shows, but there’s nothing like seeing the nation’s capital in person. The District of Columbia is best known as the home to the federal government, but it is also a vibrant city and a great vacation destination with a wide range of attractions, events, entertainment, shopping, dining, and outdoor recreation opportunities that sees more than 20 million visitors annually . This is a place where you can see national historic landmarks, visit free museums and see national treasure, take in a concert, and enjoy an amazing meal.

Read on for tips on planning a vacation in Washington, D.C., including information on the best time to visit, how long to stay, where to stay, what to do, how to get around, and more.

Planning Your Trip

Best time to visit: The city has four distinct seasons, and generally the most pleasant weather is in the the fall and the spring (plus, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom during late March and early April, with predictions release every year to allow visitors to plan ahead ).

Language: English

Getting Around: Forget the region's notorious traffic and rely on the Metro to hit all the tourist highlights. Taxis and Uber and Lyft are also easy to hail here.

Travel Tip:  Take out a Capital Bikeshare for the day for National Mall sightseeing (and wear good walking shoes to tackle the museums).

Whether you're looking to join the crowds during Cherry Blossom season,  Memorial Day Weekend  and the  Fourth of July  or escape them, here's a guide to the best times of the year to visit. Meanwhile, this  Washington DC Monthly Event Guide  will give you a month-by-month summary of the events that are held each year.

Things to Do

If you've never been to the District of Columbia, visiting the monuments on the National Mall is an absolute must — as is the  U.S. Capitol Building  and the White House. Then head to one of the 17 world-class museums and galleries in the Smithsonian Institution in the area , which are all open to the public for free. After that, leave the tourist track and spend time in a lively, historic neighborhood like Georgetown  or Adams Morgan .

  • Walk the green expanse of the National Mall (known as America's backyard), from the U.S. Capitol Building  to the  Washington monument and other famous memorials.
  • See the White House, the office and home of America's Commander-in-Chief.
  • See priceless art and artifacts at the Smithsonian Institution's many free museums .

Where to Eat and Drink

In the past 10 years, the nation's capital earned a place among America's best cities for dining out. In terms of local cuisine, the hot dog-like half-smoke smothered in chili and cheese at historic Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street draws in lines of tourists. But Washington D.C. has a huge selection of restaurants ranging from formal dining to casual family-friendly eateries. The city is home to embassies and thriving immigrant communities, and you can find just about every type of cuisine from around the world here from Filipino fare at Bad Saint to Ethiopian at  Zenebech .

This city is serious about drinking too. Where you go out for a stiff drink just depends on your mood. Beer drinkers will love brewpubs like Right Proper and Bluejacket or the many outdoor beer gardens like Dacha that flourish in the summer. Wine bars are popping up too, along with rooftop bars  and craft cocktail spots including José Andrés’ rarified Barmini .

Explore our articles on the best restaurants in D.C. , the best family-friendly restaurants, and the best bars.

Where to Stay

Where to stay when visiting Washington DC really depends on your budget. The city has a wide range of accommodations ranging from large convention hotels to small boutique-style properties to economical youth hostels. You should book your hotel early to confirm a reservation to suit your needs. Staying downtown can be expensive, but you'll be very close to tourist attractions on the National Mall and it's central enough to D.C.'s many neighborhoods that anywhere you want to go is probably a short Metro or taxi ride away. However, those looking to save money could stay in close-in suburbs like Alexandria, Arlington, or Bethesda, and simply take the Metro in during the day at off-peak hours.

Explore the different neighborhoods you can stay in, and our recommendations on the best hotels .

Getting There

The capital region is served by  three different airports , and  Amtrak  operates approximately 85 trains daily into and out of Washington's  Union Station . If you are visiting from around the region, you might consider leaving your car and taking  Metrorail  into the city. If you do drive, be patient and use a GPS to navigate your way around since with one-way streets and  traffic circles , it is easy for even locals to get confused and turned around.

  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) : Located in Alexandria, this airport the closest to the city (a 15-minute cab ride without traffic or take the Metro in), but the other airports may offer better schedules and prices from some destinations.
  • Dulles International Airport (IAD) : One of the busiest airports in the world, this is a huge hub for travel but it's also a 45-minute drive or more (or you could take a public bus or shuttle bus to the Metro).
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport : This airport near Baltimore is the furthest away from the District at 50 minute drive or more, but tickets can be the most affordable and the MARC train is an option for getting into the city.

Money Saving Tips

  • Visit the Smithsonian museums, which boast free admission and enough to see that you could spend an entire day in each one. In fact, many educational attractions in D.C. are free to the public.
  • Time your Metro trips to off-peak hours when fares are cheaper (not during rush hour).
  • Rent a Capital Bikeshare bike for the day and wheel around on the cheap.
  • Take advantage of the free nightly shows at  Kennedy Center 's Millennium Stage.
  • Eat at gourmet food trucks for lunch (you'll find them downtown in spots like Franklin Square and Union Station where office workers duck out for a meal).
  • Food halls like Union Market are also exploding in popularity, with affordable, interesting food.
  • Enjoy free concerts outside during the warm months, along with outdoor movies .

Washington, D.C. is so much more than the political epicenter of the U.S. The city offers legendary museums, one of the best hotels in the country in 2022 (as voted by T+L readers), and a calendar full of fun events for the entire family. History buffs will love stepping back in time at the National Mall, and anyone with a passion for reading will swoon at the book collection in the Library of Congress. Nature lovers should opt for a springtime visit, when the cherry blossoms bloom and events start to trickle outside, including the Blossom Kite Festival. And let's not forget that the country's capital is also a college town, with universities like Georgetown, Howard, George Washington, and American all within city limits.

Whether you're headed there to learn, play, or even just as a stopover before your next destination, you should explore everything the capital city has to offer. These are the best places to stay, eat, and shop in Washington, D.C.

Riggs Washington, D.C.

Riggs Washington D.C. is the place to stay in the capital city, and it's got the accolades to prove it. The property was named the best hotel in Washington, D.C . in 2022 by T+L readers. Once a national bank headquarters, the hotel combines its past and present beautifully. You'll find small bespoke touches that pay homage to its history, including in-room minibars designed like vintage safes.

The Jefferson

The Jefferson , also voted one of the city's best hotels in 2022 by T+L readers, is an independently owned boutique that features "99 guest rooms inspired by our third president’s travels in Paris and home in Charlottesville, Virginia," T+L contributor Rebecca Ascher-Walsh previously reported . The hotel is currently offering a "Summer of Discovery" package, where guests can receive a daily itinerary curated by the hotel's in-house historian, a $50 daily dining credit, and late checkout.

Rosewood Washington, D.C.

Rosewood Washington, D.C . is a chic retreat in Georgetown set along the C&O Canal and is a favorite among T+L readers . The property features 55 rooms, 12 suites, and six town houses designed for long-term guests. Enjoy a meal on-site at Cut, a Wolfgang Puck steakhouse. The restaurant is open seven days a week and hosts brunch on the weekend. Reservations are recommended.

The Hay-Adams

This historic hotel, also loved by T+L readers , overlooks Lafayette Square and has great views of the White House and the Washington Monument. The Hay-Adams was named after its original residents — John Hay and Henry Adams. Scott Bay, a T+L contributor, reported that "the details seen throughout the Italian Renaissance-style mansion and its 145 rooms evoke a sense of timelessness that keeps visitors coming back year after year."

Pendry Washington, D.C. The Wharf

The Pendry is one of D.C.'s newest properties and was named one of the best new hotels in 2023 by T+L editors. The 131-room hotel features high-end amenities, including "a panoramic pool terrace with cabanas, sun loungers, and a swimming pool; spa facilities; and a rooftop restaurant," T+L contributor Dobrina Zhekova previously reported . Most rooms in the hotel feature floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase stunning views of the Potomac River and monuments like the Jefferson Memorial.

Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, and the building itself is a work of art, with a beautiful, intricate reading room and other fine architectural details. It provides a great respite for anyone seeking knowledge or just a break from the D.C. humidity. Kevin Fanning, former D.C. tour guide and current regional sales manager at tour company WeVenture , recommends that travelers get themselves a library card. "You [might never] go into the reading rooms, but [it'll be] a souvenir that says you are a member of the Library of Congress." The library is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and all visitors must reserve a timed-entry pass before visiting. You can reserve them for free online .

George Washington's Mount Vernon

Tour George Washington's estate home and learn about the first president's life and legacy at this historic site. In addition to the mansion, which offers timed entry, Mount Vernon has a museum and education center, gardens, a slave memorial, a working farm, and Washington's tomb. There are also seasonal events here as well, including whiskey tastings, a colonial market, and fireworks. The estate is open 365 days a year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $28 for adults, $15 for children between six and eleven, and free for children under five.

National Mall

Often referred to as "America's front yard," the National Mall is home to iconic monuments like the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. "The easiest way to get around the National Mall is the D.C. Circulator, " Kevin Fanning noted when asked about the two-mile-long stretch of monuments. "There's a city bus that runs around the National Mall every 10 minutes." Make sure you check its website for regular and seasonal schedules.

Washington, D.C. is home to 74 museums that cover topics ranging from history and art to science and aerospace. Notable museums include the National Museum of African American History and Culture ; the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History ; and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum , dedicated to the ongoing preservation of Holocaust history. Carolyn Crouch, founder of popular D.C. walking tour company Washington Walks , also recommends visiting the Capital Jewish Museum . "[It] includes the city's oldest synagogue building. [Check out] 'Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsberg,' its inaugural exhibition."

United States Botanic Garden

While the National Arboretum is larger in scale, don't pass up the opportunity to see this curated nature exhibition right in the heart of downtown D.C. Established in 1820, this is the oldest continuously operated public garden in the U.S. — and a great place to escape the city and learn about various plants and flowers.

Cady's Alley

This design district is home to high-end designers and local antiques, including home furnishings, fashion, and other chic shops. The 19 stores that currently occupy the alley include high-end jewelry shop Brilliant Earth ; Relish , which sells clothes and accessories; and District Doughnut , which sells — you guessed it — donuts.

M Street Shops, Georgetown

M Street is a must-visit for D.C. visitors keen on shopping the city's high-end boutiques. You can also stop in at some national favorites, like Patagonia , Urban Outfitters , and Brandy Melville .

Politics and Prose

Known for their almost-nightly author talks, this independent bookstore carries thousands of books and includes an expanded children's section. Additional locations at Union Market and the Wharf make it accessible as part of any just about sightseeing day in town. For exclusive discounts and perks, become a Politics and Prose member for just $35 a year.

CityCenterDC

CityCenterDC , located in downtown D.C., is your one-stop shopping destination, with 34 retail options, nine dining venues, and even lodging at the Conrad Washington D.C . Shops include high-end brands like Gucci , Dior , and Chanel . Carolyn Crouch recommends visiting some of the gourmet food stores while you're here, too. "Stop in at Mercato Centrolina for house-made pasta and sauces, and stop at Piccolina for delectable cakes and tarts."

The Restaurant at District Winery

Inside D.C.'s first operational commercial winery is an upscale dining room with expansive windows overlooking the nearby Anacostia River. Chef de cuisine Nicholas Fulginiti created a delicious vegetable-forward menu inspired by local ingredients. Stop in for dinner on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., or hit up brunch on the weekends, when doors open at 11 a.m.

Call Your Mother

This D.C. deli is one of President Joe Biden's favorite spots — he picked up bagels at the Georgetown location shortly after he was sworn in as president. Call Your Mother' s bagels are inspired by New York and Montreal-style bagels, and they sell deli favorites like tuna melts and pastrami sandwiches as well. Their seven D.C. locations are open every day, though each has its own set hours. Check the hours online before you go, and order in advance if you can.

Fiola Mare delivers high-end service, delicious seafood and beautiful waterfront views. The sophisticated, seasonally changing menu reflects the fare found along some of Italy's most famous coastlines, including the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. It makes for a great fine-dining option around Georgetown and welcomes guests seven days a week — though be aware it's only open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays. Reservations are recommended.

Award-winning chef José Andrés started his legacy here in 1993, helping to transform the Penn Quarter neighborhood into a bustling food destination. Jaleo celebrates Spanish culture through delicious signature tapas, paellas, and cured meats. "No one should travel to Washington, D.C. without dining at one of José Andrés restaurants," Carolyn Crouch remarked when asked about Jaleo. "Why not start with the original? It's where countless Washingtonians have fallen in love with Spanish tapas." Stop by during the weekday for "sangria hour," where sangria, wine, and certain tapas are reduced in price from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Note that the restaurant is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Union Market

Currently home to 41 vendors, this artisanal hub boasts an array of delicious restaurants, from smaller names like TaKorean , which only operates in the D.C. and Maryland areas, to French pastry giant Ladurée . There's something here that'll suit everyone's taste buds, including Argentinian empanadas, avocado toast, and Southern comfort food. The hall is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The best time to go to Washington, D.C. is between April and June, when temperatures are moderately warm and events abundant.

The spring brings D.C.'s famous cherry blossom season, arguably the most beautiful time of year in the capital city. "Few cities undergo [a] seasonal transformation more beautifully and dramatically than Washington, D.C.," T+L contributor Katie Chang previously reported . "Its 3,000-plus cherry blossom trees remain a visually striking symbol of renewal, hope, and friendship." The National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place from late March to early April, and guests can enjoy a kite festival, parade, and cherry blossom-themed eats.

May brings graduation season, and the city's hotels start to book up with proud family members. Reserve a room well in advance — especially at the city's top hotels — if you plan to travel during this time.

Washington, D.C.'s high season is July and August, which are also the hottest months of the year here. The Fourth of July is a big draw for the nation's capital. When the weather is nice, Carolyn Crouch urges tourists to "get out on the water. Take a water taxi from the Southwest waterfront to Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria. You'll see iconic sites along the way."

You can get to Washington, D.C. by plane, train, and bus. Washington Dulles International Airport is the largest airport in the area and is serviced by all major U.S. airlines. However, it is located about 26 miles outside of D.C. in Chantilly, Virginia. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is only about five miles from D.C., but has significantly less flight options, as it is only served by eight airlines.

Amtrak trains have daily routes from major cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago that run directly to Union Station, which is within walking distance of some of D.C.'s most popular landmarks.

If you prefer the bus, companies like MegaBus offer several different routes to the capital city. MegaBus currently offers trips to D.C. from most major cities, including New York, Pittsburgh, and Boston.

Downtown: Downtown is home to the most important address in America: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. In addition to the White House, you'll find a number of D.C.'s most famous museums downtown, including the National Geographic Museum, which is currently being renovated to include amazing new experiences for visitors. (Keep an eye on its website to see when it will be open to the public.) And if you're looking for stunning views but don't want to deal with the crowds at the Washington Monument, Kevin Fanning recommends you head to the old post office and clock tower, located on the corner of 11th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. "The clock tower goes up 257 feet, giving you unparalleled views of Pennsylvania Avenue. You don't need tickets to go to the top, as it is owned and operated by the National Park Service."

Georgetown: The neighborhood around Georgetown University is more than just your classic college enclave. You'll find upscale restaurants and hotels along the C&O Canal, luxury shopping on M Street, and historic homes dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Capitol Hill: Home to the U.S. Capitol building, the Supreme Court building, and the U.S. House and Senate, this neighborhood is the political epicenter of our country. You'll find plenty of tourists and the political working crowd here, some of whom reside in the lovely 19th-century Capitol Hill row houses.

The Wharf: This trendy neighborhood is helping to reestablish D.C. as a waterfront destination. Crouch says you can have the ultimate D.C. experience in this neighborhood. "Start with a bit of shopping at Shop Made in D.C., where everything is made by local makers. Next door is a branch of Politics & Prose, one of Washington's favorite independent bookstores. Across the way is Surfside, a locally owned taco stand with an island vibe. For dessert, head over to the family-owned and -operated Southwest Soda Pop Shop for homemade ice cream and vegan soft serve."

Trains: The city's Metrorail , run by Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), operates across Washington, D.C. and into parts of Virginia and Maryland. It has six lines — yellow, orange, red, blue, green, and silver. Metrorail rides cost anywhere between $2 and $6, depending on where you're traveling and when. You can also buy a one-day pass for $13, a three-day pass for $28, and a seven-day pass for $58. Download the WMATA SmartTrip App to plan your metro and bus trips, and pay in advance.

Buses: The city's Metrobus system, also run by WMATA, will change drastically in the coming years for the very first time since the network's creation in 1973. WMATA has created Better Bus , an initiative meant to completely revitalize the bus system. Changes will include the integration of new bus lanes, new transit signals, and better service times and locations that reflect the needs of D.C. residents. The project is still in its planning stage, but changes are set to roll out in 2024.

Taxis and Car Service: Uber and Lyft are available in the greater Washington, D.C. area, and there are taxi stands spread out across the city. To schedule a cab in advance, book through a local company like D.C. Yellow Cab . You can also schedule a local black car through services like ExecuCar .

Cars: Driving in the capital city isn't necessary because the public transportation system is so comprehensive, but you can download apps like SpotHero to find and reserve parking spaces all across the city if necessary.

Washington, DC, is easy to reach from most US cities, but these are the best ways to get to and around it

  • Traveling to Washington, DC, is relatively easy by flight or ground transportation from most cities.
  • The district also offers dependable transit options once you have arrived and are ready to explore.
  • Visit Insider's hub for travel guides, tips, and recommendations .

Insider Today

Living just a few blocks away from the nearest metro station means WMATA has been my preferred mode of transportation since moving to DC almost a decade ago.

However, when the weather's nice, such as in the spring and fall, I don't mind walking a mile (or sometimes more) to get to my destination, and chances are, most visitors will feel the same.

With multiple airports, a central train station, and several major roadways, Washington is very accessible. The most challenging part is picking your preferred mode of transportation. Here are the best ways to get to and around DC.

Getting to Washington, DC

Dulles International Airport (IAD)

More than 30 national and international airlines operate out of Dulles International Airport in Virginia. Once you arrive, take a taxi, shuttle, rental car, or app-based ride service to downtown DC, which can take around 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

Related stories

A $5 shuttle also connects you to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station on the silver line. From there, it's about a 40-minute train ride to downtown Washington.

Reagan National Airport (DCA)

Located just across the Potomac River, Reagan National Airport is the closest airport to downtown DC. Though it houses under 10 airlines , flying in and out of DCA is super convenient, especially for short trips to the district. Take a shuttle, rental car, or app-service ride to the city. You can also take the Metro from the airport.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)

BWI has both national and international airlines and is another option in the DC metro area. Located 30 miles northeast of Washington, BWI is about a 45-minute car ride from the district. From there, take Amtrak, MARC train, shuttle, rental car, or app-service car ride into the city.

Union Station

Serving as Amtrak's headquarters, Union Station is one of the busiest train stations in the country. Amtrak, MARC trains, and the Virginia Railway Express all stop here. There's also an underground Metro station (WMATA's red line). Don't forget to marvel at the incredible Beaux-Arts architecture as you exit the main hall.

Getting around Washington, DC

DC is one of the most walkable cities in the country. There are, however, other modes of transportation to get around, including:

  • The WMATA Metrorail: This is a great way to get to the National Mall and explore DC. Check the WMATA trip planner to plan your trip by Metro or bus.
  • App-based car services: Uber and Lyft are popular modes of transport around the city.
  • Capital Bikeshare : With over 500 stations located around the district, Capital Bikeshare makes getting around the city easier.

The Nation’s Capital Is Waking Back Up and You Can Get There Nonstop from PDX

By Julia Silverman April 14, 2022

direct travel washington dc

Wherever you go in Washington, DC, the Washington monument is almost always in view.

Image: fllphoto/Shutterstock

For the vacationing Portlander , Washington DC might not immediately stand out as a destination, despite its direct flight status from Portland International Airport , courtesy of both United and Alaska Airlines.

Instead of beaches, there are bureaucrats. Instead of guaranteed sun or mountain snow, there is the East Coast’s special brand of humidity or frigidity, depending upon the time of year.

And yet, especially for the many Portlanders of a particular political persuasion who may have avoided the nation's capital from 2016-2020 given the then-occupant of the White House, there are plenty of reasons to hop a a flight, including new museums and refurbishments of old favorites, the best Ethiopian food this side of Addis Ababa, and administrative and legislative branches that are more politically in tune with many a die-hard Oregon liberal. (Act fast though—the electorate is restless, and who knows what the November midterms might bring?).

Every visitor to DC winds up on the National Mall at some point, especially given that the Washington monument is visible from virtually every vantage point in town. Rent an electric bicycle from Unlimited Biking (998 Maine Avenue SW) or go old-school with one from the Capital Bikeshare system, with docking stations all over town, to reach all the monuments in a timely fashion.

Yes, the giant World War II Memorial spearheaded by the late U.S. Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kansas) is as jingoistic as you’ve heard, but the accordion-like unfolding of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is quietly effective, and even after all these years, Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial remains a masterpiece. DC residents advise returning to the mall at night, when the memorials are lit up.

The Smithsonian’s arsenal of museums fan out from the mall and need some culling depending on your interests. Reserve timed admissions tickets for the glorious Museum of African American History and Culture (1400 Constitution Ave., NW) , housed in a building based on the crowns worn by the Yoruba people of West Africa, a major hub of the slave-trading economy. Pro tip: Grab the earliest possible admission time you can get, to minimize time waiting on internal lines to see the flagship historical exhibits.

If any kids in your party are disappointed that the National Air and Space Museum is closed for badly needed renovations, head a little off the beaten track to the brand-new, all-things-language Planet Word museum (925 13 th Street NW), housed in a historic former schoolhouse. It’s a much more interactive and immersive museum experience than any of the Smithsonian offerings, while sneakily teaching a fair bit about etymology, truth in advertising and even the cadence of a successful joke.

For an only in DC experience, book an early morning private tour at the National Archives (701 Constitution Avenue NW)—it’ll be just you, a few others, an informative guide and a couple of security guards, standing over originals of the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in the hushed rotunda. Another can’t miss: The National Museum of American History , (1300 Constitution Avenue NW) which is chock-a-block with Americana, from a rebuild of Julia Child’s iconic Cambridge kitchen to the statement inauguration dresses worn by nearly ever first lady to a meticulous re-enactment of NE Sandy Boulevard c, 1950, as part of an exhibit on car culture and transportation in America.

Public tours of the White House (1400 Pennsylvania Avenue NW) are starting back up again on April 15 after a long pandemic hiatus. (But don’t just show up—arrange your admission in advance via your local Congressional representatives.) The Capitol and the US Supreme Court are still closed to visitors, so instead, indulge in some retail therapy over in Georgetown which has an absolute plethora of preppy temples for the browsing, from J. McLaughlin (3278 M Street NW) to Vineyard Vines (1225 Wisconsin Avenue NW).

Don’t miss DC’s finest independent bookstore, Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut Avenue NW) either (check their event listings beforehand—this is a de rigeur stop for high-profile politicians with campaign manifestos to flog). Or, pop into the original branch of the Capital’s most beloved deli, Call Your Mother , (3428 O Street NW) for bright bagel sandwiches. If you're really hungry, take the blue line from Foggy Bottom and transfer to the red line at Metro Center, then get off at the Florida Avenue stop and make your way to Union Market, (1309 5 th Street NW) DC’s indoor answer to our food cart pods, with branches of some of the city’s best restaurants—our vote goes to the roasted vegetable/yellow lentil dosa with cilantro-sesame dipping sauce from DC Dosa .

Should you be unable to get a power lunch table at Le Diplomate —and trust us, unless you are President Obama, you will probably not be getting that reservation—good quicker lunch options around the downtown core include Teaism ’s (400 8 th Street NW, among other locations) much better-than-they need to be bento boxes and steaming bowls of udon noodles and Top Chef contestant Spike Mendelsohn’s grab-a-slice joint on Capitol Hill, We, The Pizza (305 Pennsylvania Avenue SE) .

At dinner, do not miss the Michelin-starred Chercher ( 1334 9 th Street NW ), an Ethiopian restaurant in the hopping Shaw neighborhood—the vegan special, a steal at $14.99, comes with just about everything that can be scooped up by injera bread, including split peas cooked with ginger and garlic, simmered and chopped collard greens, and lentils in house special berbere sauce. (Carnivores may prefer the beef tips, cooked with onions, garlic, jalapeño, and patent-pending “exotic spices.”)

As for where to stay, options are thick on the ground. You could go opulent at the White House adjacent Intercontinental, but our pick is the freshly opened Hotel Zena off Logan Circle (1155 14 th Street NW), a temple to femininity that includes a pointillist inspired mural of RBG made from tampons, plus wellness classes and potent cocktails at the cheekily named Figleaf, the in-house restaurant.

San Antonio hopes for a direct D.C. flight reignited

S an Antonio has another chance at getting nonstop service to Reagan National Airport just outside Washington, D.C., under a new bill in Congress.

Why it matters: San Antonio does not currently have nonstop service to DCA, which supporters have long argued limits business and travel opportunities.

State of play: Transportation Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) — two senators from states that would gain from more long-haul D.C.-area flights — struck the compromise this week.

  • A coalition supporting the proposal says the "bipartisan compromise represents a win for air travelers who suffer from some of the highest domestic ticket prices in the country" because of limits on air travel.

Context: National Airport currently restricts flights to a perimeter of 1,250 miles, allowing 20 roundtrip flights to operate outside of this boundary.

  • The proposal would add five more flights.

Zoom in: This week, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) showed his support for the bill, saying San Antonio is "losing out" without direct flights to the nation's capital.

  • He pointed out that 96 smaller U.S. cities have direct flights.

Meanwhile, U.S. senators from Maryland and Virginia warn National Airport is already "overburdened."

  • Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told Congress: "We would be concerned about the pressure that that could put on the system."

What's next: The proposal is tucked into a large FAA reauthorization bill, which will need full approval before a May 10 deadline.

Checking in at the airport the agent only booked the first keg of my trip and had my checked luggage going to the airport with a layover! Never was issued a boarding pass for the second leg or received sticker fir my checked bag. All was well in the end! Delta agents helped to resolve the situation!!!

Delayed due to an ill passenger after loading. Not preventable on Delta's part. Was in first class. The seats are becoming worn and detaching from their velcro attachments. Only got snacks on flight. The attendant was not the friendliest.

I would fly again the whole experience was great. The only feed back I can give that they don't do that American Airlines does is the crew there is more humorous with boarding and thank their passengers. It makes it more fun to fly with them. I would however fly Delta again.

From Atlanta to Cabo I would have hoped on a plane that size I would have been able to breathe and wiggle my feet a little! The leg room in that plane is non existent and I am only 5”4’. And the air vent either wasn’t working very well or just could not blow air from the ceiling to the seat area as I was suffocating through the entire flight! And please don’t say I would have been more comfortable in first class because I cannot afford those rates and have always travelled Main Cabin without issues !

The pilots were good. Disappointing when planes don't have electrical ports

I liked the piloting of the aircraft. Very disappointed about lack of electrical ports. Also, although a short flight. there was enough time to hand out snacks to comfort + seats as was done for first class.

I had a wonderful experience flying with delta. The gentleman taking care of us on our flight was so nice, accommodating, and attentive. He always was smiling and giving pins to the kids which made me smile. The flight was quick too and without turbulence. Thank you for the great flying experience.

Delta is one of the best airlines I have flown

Made the Atlanta to Pittsburgh trip many times, with Delta no issues

I always fly with Delta. My friends tell me their horror stories of flying with other airlines. I just smile and say, “You should fly Delta”

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

Too many fees (but that seems to apply to all airlines nowadays)

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

Everything was very good. Boarding and takeoff were on time and organized. Had a good flight

Wheelchair assistance was not complete. The person left me at the departure gate without informing the groundstaff of my requirements. I had to walk to the departure counter to ask for help to reach the plane door. The crew informed me that in future they were not allowed to help passengers like me, senior citizen and Wheelchair passenger with placing their carry on bags in the overhead compartments!

Flight was delayed by over an hour and gate checked bags took 15 minutes to be delivered to the jet bridge.

Seats are way too snug for my hip to knee ratio and the recline on the seat in front of me made my experience worst. My legs had no room at all. Not a plane for people 6 ft or over unless you fly first class.

Delayed for maintenance issue?? Should have been addressed before boarding. Put my bag on an earlier flight, but didn’t ask if I wanted to change to an earlier flight. Arrived to find my bag locked up and no agent to be found when I landed.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

The flight was great until towards the end when the flight attendant read an excessively long commercial for purchasing an american airlines credit card. The worst part is that we are doing a lot of traveling this year so i was actually interested in getting the credit card, but I was so annoyed with the long commercial that I completely dismissed the flight attendant bringing around the information. Next time, keep the sales pitch to 10 seconds and then pass around the brochures!!

Nice aircraft. Plane was PACKED full and distance between seats was tight. Had it been more than a two hour flight it would not have been tolerable. I had much more knee space on the JetBlue flight I went out on.

New ridiculous policy by american destroyed my allegiance to american. As a million miler with american, I expected it would be easy to get on an earlier flight when I got to airport earlier than expected, and save a five hour layover. WRONG. The online app would not let me switch flights, So I called, and was promised a call back in 90 minutes. HAH! The customer service desk at DCA said “we no longer have access to changing a flight on our screens. If the app couldn’t do it, I should send a letter to American, but there’s nothing else possible!”

I am tired of being nickel and dimed for seat location, checked luggage and carry on bags. That is why i rarely fly anymore.

It was right on time and crew were very courteous

Great flight. Boarding was efficient and quick. On time departure and smooth flight. Flight arrived early at destination. Good experience.

Literally the worst experience ever and I had my service dog with me. Flight was supposed to leave at 1:51 PM but the plane arrived late. They boarded us around 3 PM and kept us on the plane for an hour saying that due to weather conditions in Miami, we could not takeoff yet. After waiting for an hour, they deplaned. And then they will not give us our bags back that we could just leave and schedule for another flight. Every hour they kept updating saying we have to wait another hour without any explanation as to what was going on. Eventually, I went to customer service to change my ticket, but by the time I made it to the front of the line, they started boarding my flight again. And then when we got onto the flight, they said there were two flight attendants That were past their shift. They kept us on the plane for about another 40 minutes until they told us they had no other flight attendance and had to deplane again. Then I gave us hotel vouchers and told us we would be on a flight at 6 AM the next day. At this point it is about 9 PM. I get to the hotel with my dog, who hasn’t been able to go potty for about eight hours. When I arrived at the hotel, I got a text alert saying my flight has been canceled at 6 AM and they moved past to 5 AM, however the hotel shuttle doesn’t leave early enough to make it to the airport for 5 AM flight. So me and some other passengers got a cab after about three hours of sleep to get back to the airport. This was the worst experience ever.

Their computers were down upon arrival to the airport. They were unable to figure out how to board us. We were delayed over an hour and a half.

Delay. Flight was delayed in Washington.knew that connection was impossible as not enough time to switch terminals. The steward would not let me stay the night. So forced to Dallas.late night, after 10pm.hotel checkin was one hour. Passengers lined up only one girl to checkin at comfort inn. No food availability at that time. Had to leave early at 6:30 am to catch a flight at 8:45. Stressfull.

I paid for WiFi, but it (WiFi) was very very slow, will never take again! Impossible open Utube 😤😤😤

I had no legroom, although I paid for extra legroom. I could barely put my bag in front of my feet and under the seat. The Wi-Fi was horrible. In fact the flight attendant said that they had to reboot it and see if it was going to work and never did.

The guy with severe body odor sat next to me. For the whole duration of the flight it was a torture. The airline should have better policy on limiting people with bad body odor to board the flight. Passengers should not be the ones to endure bad odor for the whole duration of the flight. The airline should be e the one to ensure decent air quality for ever passenger.

Overall it was a miserable experience... I will never fly spirit for more than a 3 hour flight or overnight.

The boarding attendant was slightly rude when I asked about checking our stroller. Made me feel like I was bothering her.

My wife and I are both handicapped and at boarding they upgraded us to a seat closer to the front rather than all the way towards the back. Much appreciated.

Not much seat room, but that was unexpected. But the seat headrest was very uncomfortable.

First the good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Flight was smooth and plane was very clean and new. Now the bad, seats have almost no padding on your behind. I was in exit row so I had tons of leg room for a 6' 2" bean pole with long legs. Everything was extra - water, soda, snacks everything besides oxygen. Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries.

They dont really bother you about carry-on size, I brought a descent sized backpack and they didnt even check.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Left Denver late, then sat on tarmac 30 min after arrival

Everything was good, 20/30 minutes late waiting on a crew member. It’s hard to keep employees. Or serious employees I know. I remember one flight from Houston of Frontiers was almost 18 hours late. And another 4 hours late very poor. But I would rather be late and safe than the on the news. Thank you.

Bought seats on the flight and they were supposed to be 2 and a jumpseat. Plane clearly changed and it was a regular 3 seat row. Asked for a refund and was denied. If I wanted to sit next to someone else I wouldn't have bought the seats..

Lost baggage on my connecting flight. 24 hours later, still no update on my bags.

It’s a cheap airline and I wish if they had better seats.

Seats are cramped and uncomfortable. You have to pay for everything and it is very expensive.

For a busy travel season, everything was clearly marked, correct, and smooth. My favorite travel description is “UNEVENTFUL,” and this trip met the mark!

The flight and crew were fine. When we (several groups) arrived in Norfolk on Sunday we discovered our bags had not arrived. The staff at norfolk airport was less than helpful. Told us our bags wouldn't arrive until Thursday. When asked what happened they said it bags never made it on the plane and it happened all the time. When asked about reimbursement for replacement items the desk agent said we could try to submit receipts online, but they weren't sure we would be reimbursed. I understand this is a low cost airline, but this was really beyond poor customer service.

Frontier is a no-frills airlines were the focus is low cost. You get basic service so don't set your expectations high. Watch out thought because this airline, like a few others, will try to nickel and dime you.

Flight had mayor delay. The onboarding took forever and was poorly conducted. AC was not in it was very warm in the plane.

Congressman Castro Urges Senate to Authorize Direct Flights from San Antonio to Washington D.C. to Support Military Travel, Economic Growth

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement urging the U.S. Senate to advance bipartisan legislation included in the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2024 that could authorize direct flights from San Antonio to Ronald Reagan International Airport (DCA), the closest airport to Washington D.C. The legislation is supported by a bipartisan and bicameral coalition of members of Congress from Texas, as well as local leaders and organizations in and around San Antonio. The Senate is expected to vote on the FAA Reauthorization this week.

“San Antonio is a world-class city that needs direct access to our nation’s capital,” said Congressman Castro. “Every year, thousands of our city’s servicemembers, cybersecurity professionals, and business travelers spend hours stuck on layovers on their way to Washington D.C. As the largest American city without direct flights to D.C., San Antonio is losing out on opportunities to attract business and travel that could create thousands of jobs. I urge the Senate to pass the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 and reject amendments that would remove the possibility for additional flights out of DCA.”

Currently, 96 American cities with smaller populations than San Antonio offer direct flights to DCA, including Tulsa, Akron, Cedar Rapids (IA), and Pensacola (FL).

Congressman Castro has worked consistently to secure federal funding and resources to expand San Antonio International Airport (SAT). After working to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act with approximately $1.2 billion for Texas airports, he was quickly able to secure $20 million of those funds for the construction of a Ground Load Facility at SAT to improve airport operations and capacity. As part of the FY2023 federal appropriations bill, he additionally secured $1.5 million to allow the airport to purchase three electric passenger buses and assorted infrastructure to transport passengers from the car rental facility and lower the airport’s carbon footprint.
