We just came back from our first ever safari trip. We went not knowing what to expect. After our first game drive, we got to know why Sabi Sands Lodges are the best when it comes to big five game viewing. We managed to view all of the big five on one day.

The accommodation was perfect and the staff were exceptionally friendly. We are hooked, we will certainly visit Sabi Sabi again, very soon.

We had a great overall experience at Mala Mala. We saw abundant animals and several exciting interactions between them. Our guide was knowledgeable and nice (the others in our group had a guide who had had incredible intuition for finding animals and we benefited from it). The rooms are nice, beautiful and comfortable. The food was good/okay... We were there for three nights and it seemed like there were a lot of repeats between the meals. The staff were all friendly and the customer service was great!

Our family just spend 3 days in the Cottage. The safaris were outstanding led by our intelligent and passionate guide Michael. We saw so much and learnt so much in the "Land That Time Forgot". Leopard with Waterbuck kill, wild dogs, Lion and Elephant swimming and wrestling in a dam and so much more!! The camp manager Gary was so welcoming and friendly. His enthusiasm for the bush is infectious. Thanks for a wonderful time in a special place. Also thanks for arranging a truly unique bat sighting!!!! Stayed May 2017, travelled with family

My daughter and I spent 3 nights at Notten's in April 2017 and we loved everything about it! We loved the fact that we were teamed up with the same driver/tracker/four other guests in the same car over the course of all the days - we had such fun together and really got involved in trying to spot the animals. And we were rewarded with multiple leopard sightings and the other big 5, as well as all the other beautiful animals - zebra, giraffes, kudu, impala etc - and many birds. The rooms - including outdoor shower, dining area, food, pool, gift shop, massage, the lovely candle light (and lack of electric lighting) and special sundowner by the river were all fabulous. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. The staff were professional and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. They went the extra mile to engage with my 9 year old daughter. This place suited us perfectly. It was top class without being pretentious. Worth every penny - and actually better value than some other lodges. Recommended without hesitation. We hope to return one day. Thank you to all - Dale, Suzie, Gift, Desmond, Tulani, Riddent, Joe and everyone else (sorry if names are miss-spelt).

Night time star gazing by the fire. Trip to the village. Great amenities. Boma, Observation points. Nice little library. The staff will walk you to your cabin at night. A wonderful visit that was nothing short of perfect. Amazing game sightings, the best I've had (and it is always good), our Ranger and Tracker were great fun and very knowledgable, the staff were on the ball and the atmosphere and mood relaxed and attentive. This was a great experience overall. The resort was nice and homely. Our ranger Kelsey and tracker Bennett were very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions that we had. The game drives were exciting and the search for the leopard was one of the highlights of the trip. The rooms were spacious, and the food was almost unending. The only downside, and understandably so, was the inability to move from one room to another, after dark. While our sons were older and able to stay on their own, families with slightly younger children may have to stay in one chalet. Strongly recommend it!!

We absolutely loved this resort. The staff is so warm and welcoming, the rooms and public areas are beautifully and comfortably decorated, the food was delicious (I'm a San Francisco foodie pescetarian and absolutely loved the food/presentation), and the game drives were unforgettable. Don't miss the bush walk--we walked through a field of butterflies, saw all kinds of animal tracks, and enjoyed a different view of the landscape we'd been driving through all week. I would also highly recommend visiting the Thornybush Community Project gardens with Gavin, where some of the beautiful food served in Sabi Sand resorts is grown by local women as part of a community collective. We also visited a school, which had an incredible impact on us. I loved Simbambili--a little piece of my heart is still there

If you are planning a trip to S.A. And want to spend time in the bush, then Sabi Sands is a must. We have been travelling to to South Africa every year for the past 12 years and stayed at many game reserves including the Krugar many times. This year we saved up hard and achieved our dream, to stay in Sabi Sands. All that I can say it's Well Worth every penny, the reserve is just something else! It's the best and it's a must, forget the rest push the the boat out and and stay at in Sabi Sands.. We chose Elephant Plains due to our budget. It was wonderful food fantastic, staff brilliant, service first class. We saw the big five for the the first time in 12 years.... So if you are looking for a safari holiday then look no further this place is the best. Memories we will never forget.

Fabulous three days at Idube Game Reserve. Lovely people. amazing food. So many highlights. But one stood out. When we surprised a rhino and it charged our Land Cruiser, leave it to our guide, Brogan, to take care of business. With a sharp, "OY!", the rhino stopped it charge, turn around and trotted back to its mate. Note that the wifi was only available in the office when we went, but it's due for an upgrade any date. Pro-tip: No cell coverage, but the office has a cell tower booster. Turn off your wifi, and your phone will pick up the cell booster if you have a local phone or international plan

After spending 2 nights at the Dulini River Lodge we spent 2 nights at the Dulini Lodge. Even though both Lodges are in the same Reserve and very close they offer a different athmosphere. The Dulini Lodge gives you a stronger "Africa feeling" in terms of decoration and setup in my view.

The bungalows are very spacious and well equipped. The welcome is kind and warm and the staff is amazing. They provided me with a special birthday dinner which made the stay even more memorable.

The game drives with the Ranger Fred and our tracker May where an experience. We saw a lot and as haveing been on Safari before we received so much more indepth information since we did not have to worry about seeing all the big 5 (which we saw anyway).

Will try to be back whenever possible

It's hard to put into words what a wonderful place this is , even before you arrive the staff are extremely helpful with information and when you arrive they make you feel part of the lodge community not just a guest (truly welcoming).

The staff are genuinely interested in your adventure and happiness joining in stories and experiences of each game drive .Be prepared for the early starts 5.30 am game drive however believe me this is the best time of the day to see the animals and is a magical time to see the bush. The lodge and rooms are to a very high standard with all rooms having great views and the best bit being no fences !!!! YOU REALLY ARE IN THE BUSH 🙂 . This is without doubt a luxury Safari

BIRD WATCHING @ JOCK

For the avid birdwatcher, abundant species of birdare regularly seen on the concession including raptors such as the Martial, Tawny and Fish Eagles as well as Steppe Buzzards.  A wide variety of Bushveld Birdsare spotted from the comfort of one’s room or whilst lying next to the Rock Pool. Most commonly seen are Hornbills, Starlings, Boubou’s, Shrikes and Woodpeckers to name but a few.

Late summer (January and February) is an excellent time for birding in Kruger. Kruger attracts a diversity of birds because it straddles so many eco-zones.  The tranquil atmosphere at the Lodge allows for unique birding opportunities as man slows down, finding the rhythm of nature and begins to truly observe.

GAME DRIVES @ JOCK SAFARI LODGE

Morning and evening drives are performed in covered 4×4 Land Cruisers conducted by highly experienced rangers. Traversing through the concession, the wildlife is sometimes staggering in its diversity. Enthralling sightings of elephants, prides of lions as well as a sea of buffalo horns rising from the grass as they lie resting in the growing heat, awaits one.

At dusk, a vantage point is chosen to overlook one of the many breath-taking views of the Kruger National Park. Sundowners are enjoyed while tales of the bush are told and a glimpse of what this unique wilderness has to offer is seen while being entranced by the ever-changing colours of the sky as the sun slips into the timeslot of tomorrow. En route back to the lodge, nocturnal animals

BUSH WALKS @ JOCK SAFARI LODGE

Walking Safaris are encouraged, after a hearty breakfast, moving through the veld enjoying vistas of unsurpassed beauty and discovering one’s place in the cycle of nature.

The diversity of fauna and flora in this unique concession truly comes alive when viewed on foot. Qualified walking guides provide the opportunity for guests to experience the excitement of approaching species on foot.

Popular safaris at jock safari lodge, 5 day sabi sands under canvas tented safari.

Umkumbe Safari Lodge is located on the banks of the seasonal Sand River, perfectly situated in one of the best big five game viewing destinations in Africa.

A five-day safari in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, with luxury lodging under canvas tents at Umkumbe Bush Lodge, provides the ideal glamping experience and enough time to completely rewind.

The Umkumbe Bush Lodge is nestled beneath a canopy of indigenous trees. This luxury tented camp, the reserve’s first of its kind, offers all of the creature comforts of home, but with a luxurious twist.

Two daily game drives are included in a safari stay at Umkumbe Bush Lodge. A scenic coffee stop may be included in the morning safari, and a classic safari sundowner and snacks may be included in the afternoon drive.

Accommodation

Umkumbe’s main lodge overlooks a patch of open savanna, a wooded thicket, and a winding drainage line that eventually empties into the seasonal Sand River. This place is none other than Jock Safari Lodge, where the timeless African tale of courage and companionship between man and his faithful friend, Jock of the Bushveld, unfolds amidst the untamed wilderness.

As the very first private concession granted within Kruger National Park, Jock Safari Lodge stands as the original safari legend, offering guests the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable journey through the pages of Sir Percy FitzPatrick’s classic tale.

Nestled in Kruger’s southern region, where the Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers converge, the lodge transports you back to South Africa’s gold rush era, where every corner echoes with the echoes of adventure and exploration.

At Jock Safari Lodge, your journey is not just about witnessing the wild spaces and wildlife surrounding our lodge—it’s about becoming a part of it. Dive deep into the bush’s delicate balance and fascinating stories through Big 5 game drives, wilderness walks, and guided explorations of the local flora, fauna, and birdlife. Our conservation efforts extend beyond the lodge, offering guests the opportunity to contribute to the preservation of this precious ecosystem.

It is your responsibility to disclose the age of each child in the travelling group to the Kruger Safari Company agent and confirm that he/she is the appropriate age for tour accommodation. Kruger Safari Co cannot be held liable for an accommodation establishment refusing entry to an underage child where a child policy is strictly enforced.

Kruger Safari Co reserves the right to request a copy of a birth certificate for any child in the tour group who is confirmed to be 12 years or younger.

A children’s rate is available on request. Not all accommodation establishments offer a reduced rate for children but where applicable, Kruger Safari Co will confirm in writing at what rate a child 12 years and younger will be charged.

Tips for Bringing Children on Safari

  • Before embarking on your safari, educate your children about the animals they may encounter, their behaviours, and the importance of respecting wildlife and their habitats.
  • Be flexible and understanding if they need breaks or become restless during game drives. Consider shorter, child-friendly drives or scheduling downtime at the lodge between activities.

Heading down the dusty roads of Kruger National Park in far northeastern South Africa, our safari vehicle slowed to a halt as yet another herd of elephants began stomping across the road like giant wise guardians. Just minutes before, a pod of lanky giraffes caused our vehicle to stop for a while, and a wary group of water buffalo, with their meaty bodies and curling horns, watched us as we passed. Somewhere in the distance, a lion roared.

This is Kruger National Park , 7,580 miles of wild lands that are home to 500 bird species and 145 mammal species, including elephants, black and white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippopotamuses, and lions. Located in the heart of the Lowveld, the entire park is a wildlife reserve and is bigger than the country of Israel. For many, Kruger National Park is a bucket-list destination, a glimpse of wild Africa.

Kruger National Park, originally known as the Sabi Game Reserve, was founded in 1898 by Paul Kruger, who wanted to protect the animals of the game reserve. On May 31, 1926, Kruger’s dream came true when the National Parks Act was passed. The Sabi Game Reserve and the neighboring Shingwedzi Game Reserve were combined to create Kruger National Park.

Today, roughly 950,000 people visit Kruger National Park every year, and the majority of the visitors — a whopping 80 percent — are South Africans. The park boasts more than 1,500 miles of all-weather roads that allow visitors to explore the park in their own vehicles, but safari guides are readily available as well.

Whether you decide to tour Kruger on your own or sign up for a safari, we have everything you need to know to get the most out of your visit to this important, awe-inspiring, and massive park.

When To Go To Kruger National Park

The dry winter months between May and September are generally the best times of year to visit Kruger National Park because the bush thins out a bit, making the animals easier to spot. September is a popular month, since the night and morning are less chilly.

The wet season between October and April has its advantages, however. The land turns green and lush, and many of the animals start having babies. Migratory birds are also plentiful around this time of year, but the days can be muggy and humid. The bugs are also out in force, so this is the time to take antimalarial medication, just in case.

How To Get To Kruger National Park

Flying into South Africa is by far the easiest way for international tourists to visit the park. There are four airports that serve the park: the Hendrik Van Eck Airport in Phalaborwa in northern Kruger, Hoedspruit Airport in the central region, the newly opened Skukuza Airport , and the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in the southern area.

That being said, most international visitors fly into the Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport , where daily flights are offered between Johannesburg and many of the regional airstrips surrounding Kruger. The flights take about 90 minutes and can drop you off at the airstrip in the park closest to the lodge where you are staying.

Daily flights also operate to Skukuza from Cape Town . The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport also operates daily flights from Durban and Cape Town, and another flight is available from Cape Town to Hoedspruit. Many of the lodges offer transport to and from the regional airports.

You can also rent a car and drive from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park, especially if you plan to take a self-guided tour of the park. The drive is approximately 5 to 7 hours, but it will give you the freedom to stop at other attractions along the way.

Where To Stay In Kruger National Park

Where you decide to stay depends on what kind of Kruger experience you want.

Kruger National Park has camp-run accommodations , and each camp has its own unique offerings, ranging from basic camping to the quintessential safari tents to luxury lodges. Kruger has 10 luxury safari lodges you can book, and the surrounding private game reserves offer luxury accommodations, meals, and highly trained personnel. The private lodges include Londolozi Founders Camp , Mala Mala Main Camp , Londolozi Varty Camp , and Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge . You may also consider the newly built Skukuza Safari Lodge in Kruger.

The average length of stay for a safari in Kruger is a minimum of two nights up to a week. If you plan to stay for more than four days, consider choosing two separate lodges so that you can enjoy a nice variety of experiences, animals, and foods.

Pro Tip: If you do opt for a private game reserve, know that these reserves are not fenced off from predators. Lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and zebras can wander through the camp, so exercise extreme caution and never walk around unaccompanied after dark.

A tour guide in Kruger National Park.

Should I Explore The Park On My Own Or Take A Guided Safari?

When I visited Kruger National Park, the group I was traveling with opted for a self-guided tour of the game reserve. Luckily, our driver was well versed in how to spot animals in the park, but having a true safari experience is worth the cost and consideration as well.

If you opt for a game drive , you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Morning drives, sunset drives, and even nighttime drives can be booked at the park, and an experienced and knowledgeable guide will point out wildlife and information you likely wouldn’t notice on your own. Most lodges and private lodges offer their own driving and walking safaris as well.

If you choose to explore the park on your own, maps will be your best friend. A great list of maps can be found here .

If you want the best of both worlds, Kruger offers a Park & Ride program. Just park at a select gate and hop on a safari ride through the park to see the Big Five and more.

Pro Tip: Kruger also offers safari adventures for the disabled .

How To Prepare For A Safari Bush Drive

You wake up in your safari tent or in your luxury lodge room excited for the day and the chance to see the famous wildlife of Africa. The golden hours of safari are typically the early morning, sunset, and nighttime, so try to book your drives during those hours, when the animals are more active.

To have a good Kruger experience, plan to bring items like binoculars, insect repellent, a camera, a map, plenty of bottled water and snacks, and a hat and sunscreen to protect against the African sun. You’ll also want to pack a couple of light T-shirts, a few long-sleeved shirts for the chilly nights, a rain jacket if you’re visiting during the rainy season, good walking shoes, shorts and long pants, and a hat.

Avoid wearing white, which makes you very visible to the animals. Red attracts some animals, and bright blue can attract biting flies. Stick with neutral colors like sand, brown, and muted green.

Remember, you are in the wild. Never approach wild animals, and do not get out of your vehicle unless you are in a designated “hide” area. Every year, there are fatalities because a careless tourist got out of their vehicle to take a closer look at an elephant or lion. Also, keep your windows up when possible. Baboons can be pretty aggressive about snatching food out of vehicles.

Don’t swim in the rivers and lakes in Kruger. Hippos are the most dangerous of all the big animals, are very territorial, and run faster than humans do. Crocodiles can also ruin your day if you get too close.

Always listen to your guide, if you have one. If they say not to run, then don’t run. If they say to move away, then move away. Your guide’s job is to keep you safe in one of the world’s last true wildernesses, so trust that they know what is best for you.

Pro Tip: Your guides and spotters work hard, so expect to tip each of them anywhere from 50 to 150 rands per day. If you have the same guide each day, err on the side of tipping well. If you don’t know how much to tip the guides or staff, ask the tour operator or the concierge at your lodge. While most tips are in the South African rand, American dollars are appreciated as well.

Medical Tips And Advice

No one wants to get sick or injured while on an epic safari, but if something does happen, South Africa has plenty of clinics, hospitals, and medical personnel. That being said, you should have medical insurance or travel medical insurance. If you do an internet search for “travel medical insurance,” you’ll find plenty of affordable options.

While South Africa is mostly malaria free, Kruger National Park does have some areas where the malarial mosquito is found. Antimalarial drugs are available at pharmacies in South Africa and by prescription from your doctor.

The water is safe to drink in South Africa and at Kruger National Park, and many of the lodges and hotels provide bottled water as well.

Be aware that HIV is still a concern in Africa, so avoid contact with bodily fluids and do not have unprotected sex.

Other Activities In Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park isn’t just about game drives and safari walks.

Golfing enthusiasts will be thrilled with the Skukuza Golf Course , which was built in 1972. The course is designed for golfers of all levels, but again, you may have a few run-ins with the local wildlife, since the golf course isn’t fenced in.

Mountain biking , group backpacking with a trail leader , and birding are also popular activities at Kruger National Park. The 4×4 Adventure Trails , which get you off the beaten track to areas of park that are rarely seen, are also worth checking out.

Many of the luxury lodges offer spa experiences as well as swimming pools, chef-inspired meals, full bars, and all the bells and whistles. You will not get bored — trust me!

And speaking of meals, a bush braai is a not-to-be-missed experience. A braai (barbecue) around the boma (outdoor enclosure with a fireplace) is available at most of the camps in Kruger, and it usually includes a choice of three grilled meats, salads, breads, drinks, and desserts. If you book a night game drive, you can also book a braai in the middle of the Kruger bush under the night sky. Available at all rest camps, this 3-hour experience requires booking in advance.

Pro Tip: Bring a good book or two. During the high heat of the day, when the animals are hunkered down and being lazy, you’ll want to take advantage of the down time to relax, read under some shade, and just appreciate the experience of being in Africa.

Where to Camp

Where to stay nearby, how to get there, accessibility, tips for your visit.

 moodboard / Getty Images

Arguably the most famous game reserve in all of Africa, Kruger National Park is a vast tract of land covering nearly 20,000 square kilometers (7,722 square miles), in the northeast corner of South Africa . It spans the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, and runs along the national border with Mozambique. It is the ultimate safari destination for visitors to South Africa, offering day visits, overnight stays, self-drive safaris, and guided game drives.

Kruger National Park was first established as a wildlife refuge in 1898 when it was proclaimed as the Sabie Game Reserve by the president of the Transvaal Republic, Paul Kruger. In 1926, the passing of the National Parks Act led to the merging of the Kruger with nearby Shingwedzi Game Reserve, creating South Africa’s very first national park. More recently, the Kruger became part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, an international collaboration that joins the park with Limpopo National Park in Mozambique  and Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe . As a result, animals can now move freely across international borders as they would have done for thousands of years.

The vast majority of people visit the Kruger to go on safari. You can drive your own car along the well-maintained tarred and gravel roads or book a guided game drive through any of the rest camps. Options for the latter include drives in the early morning, late afternoon, and at night. One of the best ways to experience the park in all its beauty is on foot, either with a guided walk at the camps or on one of the multi-day Wilderness Trails. Four-wheel drive enthusiasts can test their vehicles (and their mettle) on the park’s off-road trails, while mountain biking is offered at Olifants camp. Golfers can even tee off at Skukuza Golf Course , whose un-fenced green is frequently visited by hippo, impala, and warthog.

Kruger also has a fascinating human history, with evidence of people and their prehistoric ancestors living in the region for up to 500,000 years. More than 300 Stone Age archaeological sites have been discovered within the park, while other sites relating to the area’s Iron Age and San occupants also exist. In particular, the Kruger is known for its San rock art sites , of which there are approximately 130 on record. Sites of particular anthropological interest include the Albasini Ruins (the remains of a 19th-century Portuguese trading route), and the Iron Age settlements at Masorini and Thulamela .

TripSavvy / Anna Haines

A safari drive is the main activity at Kruger National Park, and the park’s incredible size means that it spans a number of different ecosystems including savannah, thornveld, and woodland. This diversity creates the ideal habitat for an astounding variety of flora and fauna, including nearly 150 different species of large mammals—more than any other African game reserve. Amongst them are the Big Five safari animals, which are buffalo, elephants, lions, leopards, and rhino (both black and white). The Little Five are also present in the park, and are some of the smallest creatures at Kruger. Other top wildlife sightings include the cheetah, the Sharpe’s grysbok, and the endangered African wild dog. The best time to spot wildlife is in the early morning or late afternoon, while guided night drives provide a unique opportunity to look for nocturnal species .

Hiring a driver or joining a tour group is the best way to explore the massive park, since guides are in communication with each other and can alert one another when there's an animal sighting. You can book a tour through the park itself or contract a private tour guide for more personalized attention. Renting a vehicle and driving yourself through the park is also an option for those who want the freedom to explore on their own.

Best Hikes & Trails

Driving around on a safari sounds like a dream vacation, but embarking on foot through the national park and literally stepping into nature is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are several Wilderness Trails that are multi-day hikes led by a local guide, where campers explore the bush and camp out. The hikes move at a leisurely pace, but hikers may be trekking up to 12 miles per day and endurance is necessary.

  • Bushmans Trail : You'll have one of the best chances for getting up close and personal with big game on the Bushmans Trail, especially white rhino. The area is made up of low valleys surrounded by tall rocky hills, providing some excellent scenery while walking. This walk also includes important historical sites, like San cave paintings dating back thousands of years.
  • Napi Trail : The campsite on the Napi Trail is at the confluence of two rivers in the national park, which naturally attracts all types of wildlife who come to drink at the riverbank. One of the best experiences, however, is nighttime as campers fall asleep to the lively sounds of the bush.
  • Sweni Trail : Hike along the Sweni River and you'll come across not just the animals that graze near the water, but their predators as well. Hearing the roars of nearby lions is common once the sun goes down, which you'll be able to hear while stargazing at the night sky.
  • Guided Day Treks : For those who want to hike around without the rustic bush camping experience, you can join a guided hike that leaves in the morning and lasts a few hours.

There are several options for camping at Kruger National Park at over a dozen different campgrounds, ranging from primitive campsites where campers need to pitch their own tent to luxury bungalows and cottages. There are 12 main rest camps at the national park, all of which offer electricity, a camp store, a gas station, laundry facilities, and a restaurant or self-service café. In addition, there are five "bushveld camps" for campers who don't mind trading in the amenities of the main camps for a more intimate and remote experience.

You have to reserve your place to sleep before you arrive, choosing which campground you want to stay in and the type of accommodation you'll be sleeping in.

  • Skukuza Camp : This is the largest campground at Kruger National Park and includes the most services for guests, such as multiple restaurants, a golf course, and the only airport inside the park. There are observation decks around the camp and you're likely to see animals without leaving the grounds—lions and cheetahs occasionally interrupt golfers by hunting prey right on the course.
  • Berg-en-Dal Camp : Berg-en-Dal is one of the most accessible campgrounds as it's only an hour away by car from the major city of Mbombela. The Rhino Trail is a hiking path that goes around the camp and offers great views of wildlife. The campground also has a swimming pool for cooling off after a day of exploring.
  • Bushveld Camps : There are five bushveld camps—Bateleur, Biyamiti, Shimuwini, Sirheni, and Talamati. These are restricted to overnight guests and have fewer facilities than the main rest camps, but they do give guests a unique feeling of remoteness and at night you're more likely to hear the sounds of the park.

There are also 10 private lodges  and three luxury tented camps located on concessions within the park. These are five-star, ultra-upmarket options for those that want to combine days spent game-viewing with gourmet meals, spa facilities, and impeccable service. Whatever accommodation option you choose, booking in advance is essential and can be done online.

  • Skukuza Safari Lodge : Of the high-end lodges, the Skukuza Safari Lodge is the most low-key and more like a hotel than a luxury safari getaway, also making it much more accessible. It's in the same area as the huge Skukuza Campground and near the Skukuza Airport for easy transportation.
  • Lukimbi Safari Lodge : This family-friendly lodge offers the full five-star package. Parents enjoy chef-prepared meals with kid-friendly options, and there's a spa for total pampering. The rooms overlook the nearby river, which is a gathering spot for animals you can see directly from the lodge.
  • Singita Lebombo Lodge : Floor-to-ceiling glass windows, premier bottles of South African wine, and elephants grazing outside your room make the Singita Lebombo Lodge stand out as one of the extravagant places to stay in the whole park.

The Kruger is easily accessible via road for self-drive guests, with tarred roads leading to all nine entrance gates. Make sure to leave plenty of time when planning your journey, as all gates close at night (although late entry may be permitted for a fee). Overseas visitors generally choose to fly into Johannesburg  and then catch a connecting flight to one of four airports. Of these, only Skukuza Airport is located within the park itself, while Phalaborwa Airport, Hoedspruit Airport, and the Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport are situated close to its boundaries. Daily flights also exist from Cape Town and Durban .

Upon arrival at any of these airports, you can hire a rental car to take you to (and around) the park. Alternatively, some private bus companies organize shuttles between the airports and the park, while those on a packaged tour will likely have their transport taken care of for them.

Visitors with mobility challenges can fully enjoy several areas of the park, including safari drives, camping, and reaching scenic outlooks via accessible boardwalks. However, the facilities vary greatly depending on which area of the park you're in, so take a look at the detailed accessibility guides for each camp area to confirm what is available. Mobility impaired guests who need accommodations in the park can also reserve one of the campsites or bungalows designed with accessibility in mind.

The tour vans provided by the park don't have lifts or ramps to accommodate guests in wheelchairs, but there are multiple providers in the area that are focused on tours for guests with disabilities, such as Epic Enabled Safaris .

  • Early morning and evening are usually when animals are most active, making for the best time to spotting wildlife.
  • Many first-time visitors make the mistake of trying to cover too much ground. Plan out your visit and take your time to explore the park, since slow travel is the best way to see animals. Every camp area maintains a list of areas with animal sightings that's updated daily, so inquire before you set out.
  • Malaria is a common issue when traveling around the bush of South Africa. Take malaria precautions like medication, long sleeve shirts, and insect repellant.
  • Pack a flashlight if you're camping in the park. The campsites are not well-lit and a flashlight is required for walking around after dark.
  • April to September is the dry season and the best time to visit, with warm days and cool nights. October to March is hot and rainy, which brings lush green landscapes that are pretty but make it harder to see animals.
  • No pets are allowed inside the park.

Jock offer one of the best Big 5 game viewing experiences in South Africa with its exclusive riverbed traversing rights.

Our best experience of Kruger was at Jock’s. You can feel the love for nature in the heart and soul of the wonderful owners. The rooms are practically in the wild. We saw elephants just passing in front of the room. Sleeping in matras under the stars (if you want), amazing food in the river bed. Will never forget this experience!

We recently stayed here for 3 nights. We had read about Jocks and the strong recommendations. This place is better than ever expected, truly a magical place. The staff were exceptional, food 5 star and location amazing. The safari drives were also amazing and our guide IKE looked after us and was an amazing tracker. There are only 12 rooms so max 24 guest so you get to know the other guest without being overcrowded – the rooms are private and sit on-top of the river bank – you can watch the animals walking past from your day bed. Honestly this place is first class. We were self drive so easy access for Skuska airport or main Kruger gates. As it it a private lodge you get the added bonus of private areas as well as direct access to Kruger – truly amazing place and highly recommended. We were sad to leave and will return.

Jock Safari Lodge is located in the heart of the Kruger national park. It’s amazing location gives you a unique and real safari vibe. The lodge itself looks so amazing, stunning rooms, restaurant and relax areas. When you arrive at the lodge you will be welcomed by the amazing staff, that will tell you what the planning looks like. The planning is really amazing, you will get so much food and drinks, on top of that 2 amazing safaris with the best rangers! The safaris are really something else, private routes and amazing storys. The staff and everyone is really amazing at the lodge, this is a must do experience!

The lodge is advertised as 5 star but I’d happily give it 6. Everything was perfect for the 3 night stay myself and my wife had, The room was spacious, clean and had everything you could want. The double shower cubicle was huge. There was an outside shower and bath, sunbeds, plunge pool, patio table with chairs and even a meshed tented area on the end of the platform overlooking the river bed with a made up double bed in case you wanted to sleep under the stars. The lodge staff were amazing, friendly and nothing was too much for them, Evening meals were fantastic, two of which were Brais (BBQ’s) on the river bed. The game drives were brilliant and our guide (not Driver!!) David, was really friendly and knowledgeable. We got the big 5 twice over. Will definitely be returning for a stay in the winter. Have done previous lodges in Kruger, Zimbabwe and Kenya but this tops them all.

We spent several days here in early March — simply, the best! Very comfortable room and excellent food, with a warm staff. Highlights are the twice a day game drives. This definitely is not “pre-packaged” stuff — your guide (ours was Jacob) has a keen sense of where to find the animals, and drives over river beds and down back trails to find them -in a respectful way. We eagerly anticipated this part of our trip, and it exceeded expectations. You must go to have this experience.

I visited Kruger and Jock Lodge in 2017 and all I wanted to do is come back. That happened in Jan 2022 and once again it was wonderful in every way. The location is on a normally dry river bed so you can see wildlife from your window or terrace. The staff is so gracious and helpful. The wildlife guides are the most knowledgable and enthusiastic I have ever met. I come for the beauty and the animals and Jock Lodge delivers every time.
