My answer is always there is never enough days, haha! But, realistically, if you are solo or just you and your partner, I think 5-7 days is totally doable to recover from jet lag and experience a taste.

However, if you have kiddos that require more breaks, nap times, etc., I would plan for 10-12 days.

Of course, any chance you have to spend longer on the island, the better!

What is Oahu best known for?

Oahu is most recognizable for its bustling state capital, Honolulu, and infamous Waikiki Beach. Also known as “the gathering place”, it has the largest population of the Hawaiian island chain.

The island’s most popular spots include the North Shore (Hawaiian surf capital), Hanauma Bay, and Pearl Harbor.

What is the most beautiful part of Oahu?

There truly isn’t a “more” beautiful place in Oahu. Each corner of the island is unique and special. However, you can see stunning landscapes of the island by driving the scenic lookouts along the windward side (east coast), hiking to overlooks or waterfalls , visiting botanical gardens , or learning a bit of history and culture at the ‘Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, or Pearl Harbor.

1. Kayak to an Island

Kayak to Chinaman's Hat

Exploring the waters of Oahu at your own pace is an epic bucket list adventure! The most popular kayak or paddleboard destinations are Chinaman’s Hat, the Mokes, or to the Kaneohe Sandbar (Gilligan’s Island).

Chinaman’s Hat, also known as Mokoli’i, is a relatively easy and safe paddle. There is a strip of sand on the southern end of the island to land and store your kayak. The beach is small, so be courteous of other paddlers.

The Mokes and Kaneohe Sandbar are more challenging due to the distance. Choose to paddle on a calm day, so you aren’t fighting the wind and waves the entire time. Be sure to check the weather before you embark on any ocean adventure.

TIP: Do not attempt to paddle to the northern end of the Mokes or Chinaman’s Hat. The waves are much more dangerous. Always wear a life jacket while kayaking!

2. Swim with Dolphins

Oahu Bucket List Dolphin Swim

Recently a law in Oahu was implemented stating you cannot pursue the dolphins or be in the water if they are present. However, there are a couple fantastic tours that help you get up close and personal to the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins (in a safe and legal way!).

We enjoyed our tour with Dolphin Excursions . The staff is friendly, informative, and prioritize respecting the ocean and marine life!

Nothing is more surreal than swimming in the open ocean with wild dolphins! It’s definitely an unforgettable Oahu bucket list adventure.

TIP: Never pursue or try to touch wild animals! If you are lucky enough to see a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin, or Hawaiian Monk Seal during your visit- remember to respect them by giving the animals plenty of space and never touch them.

3. Shark Cage Dive

Oahu Bucket List Shark Cage Dive

Want to swim in the open ocean with sharks?! There are options to free-dive with sharks, however, I highly recommend playing it safe and sticking with the cage dive.

The sharks you are most likely to see are called Galapagos Sharks. They feed on crustaceans and love to come investigate a boat they think might be hauling in crab traps for a snack.

We went on a tour with North Shore Shark Adventures . TONS of sharks swam around the cage and even made a splash or two at the surface. Shark cage diving should be on any adventurer’s Oahu bucket list when visiting the island!

TIP: While in the cage, try to remember to secure your feet on the lower rail. This will keep your bottom from floating around and your legs getting tangled up with other people in the cage. No time for distractions while you’re in the water with these big fellas!

4. Snorkel Turtle Canyon

bucket list tour hawaii

There is a special reef just offshore of Waikiki called “Turtle Canyon”. Large (I mean, HUGE) Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles tend to congregate there for a rest and a shell cleaning. Take a catamaran snorkel tour out to the canyon to see these gorgeous Honu in person!

We used Living Ocean Turtle Canyon Snorkel Excursion and Snorkel Manu Kai Waikiki Snorkel for our Turtle Canyon adventures. Both were fun, relaxing, and provided snorkel gear! Swimming with beautiful sea turtles is an automatic contender on a Honolulu bucket list!

TIP: Oahu has a monthly influx of box jellyfish along the south shores. To prevent any irritating or painful stings, I’d suggest booking your snorkel tour outside of the influx window. Check out the calendar here to plan your trip!

Snorkeling with Sea Turtles Oahu

Not fan of deep water snorkeling? Check out these fantastic snorkel spots to see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles in Oahu!

5. Parasail over Turquoise Waters

Bucket List Experience Oahu Parasail

Oahu is truly the best place to parasail. Enjoy breath taking views of the mountains and the ocean- not to mention, spotting sea turtles and maybe even sharks from the air! It’s tough to imagine a better place to “fly” over the water.

H2O Sports Hawaii Parasailing was a perfect option for us because of the location near Hawaii Kai. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and you can see Koko Crater from the air! For this reason alone, it is one of the most adventurous things to do in Oahu and should be on everyone’s bucket list!

6. Ride an Underwater Scooter

bucket list tour hawaii

An underwater sub scooter is a very unique bucket list adventure in Oahu! It was similar to a combination of snorkeling and scuba diving. We saw plenty of fish, as well as a surprise octopus! Overall, the experience was unlike anything we’ve ever done on island.

The team at Island Watersports Hawaii are hands on with you the entire time! They help guide you into your sub scooter headpiece and show you how to maneuver your scooter underwater. You also get to stay close to the other people in your party.

TIP: The tour claims you don’t need any swimming skills to enjoy this underwater wonderland. However, I would highly recommend those who are nervous about being underwater or truly cannot swim should not attempt this tour.

7. Hike to a Pillbox

Oahu Bucket List Pillbox Hike

Oahu is home to numerous pillboxes all around the island. The pillboxes are large concrete structures built on edges of the mountains. They were used in WWII as lookout posts and defensive sites. Many have murals painted inside or out. Most take a little bit of a hike to reach, but they are worth it! Not to mention, you can visit any pillbox for free!

Some great ones to check out are:

  • Lanikai pillbox
  • Pink pillbox   (also known as Pu’u O’ Hulu trail, pictured above)
  • Ehukai pillbox

8. Ride Horses on the Beach

Oahu Bucket List Experience Horseback Ride on the Beach

Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a romantic sunset ride with your sweetie, on the beach, in Hawaii?! That’s kind of a no brainer, if you ask me!

The Hawaii Polo Club offers oceanfront trail rides during the day and at sunset. You can also choose between a private or group ride. If you are a horse lover, or outdoor enthusiast, horseback riding on the beach should be on your Oahu bucket list!

Kualoa Ranch Horses

9. Do Goat Yoga at a Cacao Farm

21 Degrees Cacao Farm Oahu Goat Yoga

One of the most unique things to do in Oahu is goat yoga at a cacao farm! 21 Degrees Estate hosts a monthly “Cocoa & Flow” event.

You’ll get to enjoy a short farm tour to learn how cacao is grown and produced into chocolate. Then, a chocolate tasting, delicious pupu’s (appetizers), and yoga with adorable goats! What’s not to love? Hawaii is the only state to grow cacao. So, it’s definitely an Oahu bucket list item to try fresh, farm chocolate from the source!

TIP: Cocoa & Flow is only for age 13 and older. Also, you might want to bring your own towel or yoga mat in case the ground is damp.

10. Rum Distillery Tour

Oahu Bucket List Experience Tour Kohana Rum

KoHana Rum Distillery is another local agricultural business on Oahu that specializes in a delicious product! The tour includes a short walk through a garden of native sugar cane and the history of each species (yes, there are different kinds of sugar cane- wild, right!?).

In addition, you’ll get to see where the rum is barreled and aged, as well as a tasting! Sample the different white and aged rums and decide for yourself which is better. For an unforgettable Oahu bucket list adventure, you have to visit KoHana Rum!

11. Visit the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar

bucket list tour hawaii

Want to spend a day on the beach out in the middle of the ocean?! Relaxing in these waters are definitely my idea of how to spend a perfect day in Oahu!

The Kaneohe sandbar is a strip of raised sand in the middle of Kaneohe Bay. At high tide the water can get up to waist deep, but at low tide the sand can be completely exposed.

The best ways to reach the sandbar are to rent a pontoon boat for half day, full day, or find a friend with a boat (a boating license is required from the Kaneohe MCB Marina). Or you could book a half day sailing or boat tour .

Another option is to kayak at your own pace. Kama’aina Kayak and Snorkel Eco-ventures  have a great selection of rentals and suggest points of interest when exploring the bay.

TIP:   Drones, pets, alcoholic beverages, and smoking are not allowed at the sandbar.

12. Swim in a Waterfall

Oahu Bucket List Swim in a Waterfall

Swimming in a waterfall in Oahu is on the bucket list for most. There are many waterfalls to choose from on the island- but, to safeguard your health, I’d highly recommend Waimea Valley.

There are high levels of bacteria in some of the water sources in Oahu and you definitely don’t want to swim in or ingest it! Plus, Waimea Falls has a lifeguard on duty, just in case. There are also changing rooms nearby so you don’t have to walk around the botanical garden in wet clothes.

TIP: Don’t forget to bring a towel, change of clothes, water shoes, bug spray, and sunscreen!

13. Whale Watch on a Catamaran

North Shore Catamaran Whale Watch

Humpback whales migrate to the Hawaiian Islands typically from November through April. Whale watching is one of our favorite winter activities on the island.

An unforgettable Oahu bucket list adventure is to whale watch from a catamaran at sunset! We chose North Shore Catamaran Charters and enjoyed lounging over the water to watch the sun setting over the Wai’anae mountain range. Also, we spotted bottlenose dolphins and humpback whales breaching!

14. Explore Jurassic Park

Oahu Bucket List Experience Visit Jurassic Park

If you’re a fan of the Jurassic Park movies, or if you’re a general movie buff at all, a visit to Kualoa Ranch has got to be on your bucket list for Oahu!

Go horseback riding, drive an ATV, zipline, or mountain bike around these scenic and historical valleys. Many tours offer close up encounters with Jurassic World film sites, the Jurassic Park log, raptor pens, and other film sites and memorabilia.

Jurassic Park Fallen Tree

15. Attend a Luau

Chief's Luau Fire Finale

Experiencing an authentic Polynesian luau is a must on everyone’s Hawaii bucket list. We’ve attended a few luaus and there are certain aspects we love about each.

Chief’s Luau had fantastic pre-luau events such as weaving a Lei Po’o (headband) from Hala tree leaves, attempting to make fire with two pieces of wood, and getting a temporary Maori tattoo. The fire demonstration was the most exciting part of the performance!

Paradise Cove Luau is the most scenic. Situated directly on the ocean with their own private beach, they offer canoe rides in the cove. Also, in our opinion, it was the most delicious food.

Germaine’s Luau is also situated in a beautiful location beside the ocean. We really enjoyed walking the grounds to the Barbers Point Lighthouse and seeing the imu where the pig is roasted underground.

Polynesian Cultural Center definitely has the most to offer. Make it an entire day trip by visiting the Island Villages and experiencing the Breath of Life Show after a Luau buffet.

16. Visit Pearl Harbor

Oahu Bucket List Pearl Harbor

Paying your respects at Pearl Harbor is one of the best things to do during a trip to Oahu. Entering the grounds is free, however, to ride the ferry to the Arizona Memorial is $1 per person.

Also, there is a small museum, memorial sites for the submarines and watercrafts in WWII, and a short film that plays every 15 minutes. You can book tickets for the USS Arizona Memorial at recreation.gov .

17. Visit Sunflower Farm

Aloun Farms Sunflower Field Oahu

I am slightly ashamed to say that the first time I’ve ever walked in a pumpkin patch or sunflower field is in Hawaii! Weird place to have my first infamous fall bucket list experience, I know!

However, if you are on island during October or November, this is a really fun family activity! Aloun Farms hosts a yearly Pumpkin Festival the last three weekends of October. Waimanalo Country Farms also has a yearly Harvest Festival. How cool is it to say you’ve strolled through sunflower fields beside the ocean or within view of mountain ridges?

18. See Waterfalls on the H3

Oahu Bucket List H3 Waterfalls

Every Christmas day, my husband and I would bundle up in our Christmas pajamas and hot chocolate (even though it was 85 degrees, haha!) and drive up and down the H3. December is during the rainy season, and the mountain ridges of the Ko’olau range would be completely covered with cascading waterfalls.

It was truly a magical sight! If you’re ever on island during heavy rain, I highly suggest driving the highway to see these beauties up close. The H3 waterfalls are definitely one of my most unforgettable Oahu bucket list experiences.

19. Go on a Submarine Ride

Atlantis Submarine Tour Oahu

If you aren’t much of a snorkeler or swimmer, this is a great activity to get up close and personal with tropical fish, marine life, ship wrecks, and more!

Atlantis Adventures offers the world’s largest recreational submarine tours off the coast of Waikiki. Children must be 12 years or older to ride the submarine.

TIP: We chose the last tour of the day and it was already beginning to get dark, making it hard to see things in the water. I would highly suggest taking a mid-day (10AM-1PM) tour so you’re more likely to see the depths of the ocean at its brightest.

Oahu Bucket List Experiences Conclusion

When visiting Oahu, make this the most epic vacation ever by doing one or all of these bucket list experiences! Creating unforgettable memories with your spouse, family, or friends in Hawaii is something you’ll never regret.

In conclusion, keep in mind that the islands are not a theme park. They are the homes to many generations of local Hawaiians. Respect their land, culture, and wildlife.

Planning a trip and looking for the best things to do in Hawaii?! From waterfall hikes and swimming with sea turtles to indulging in hula pie and snacking on tropical fruit, here’s 200 things to add to your Hawaii bucket list! Yes, I said TWO HUNDRED!

Planning a trip and looking for the best things to do in Hawaii?! From waterfall hikes and swimming with sea turtles to indulging in hula pie and snacking on tropical fruit, here’s 200 things to add to your Hawaii bucket list!

Hawaii is mysteriously captivating, gorgeously lush, and all around our favorite place in the entire world. Not to sound like a total cliche, but the islands are just plain magical. There’s impressive underwater sea life, stunning green peaks, funky surf towns, shave ice/hula pie/fresh fish, near perfect weather, and turquoise water so clear it’s unimaginable. It’s so lush and so arid, so captivating and so laid-back, and so sweet and so refreshing.

Pure paradise. And we can’t get enough.

Ever since moving to California, we’ve become obsessed with Hawaii. Obsessed and then some. We make the trip across the Pacific at least once a year, and start planning our next visit while sipping mai tais in the islands themselves!  I’ve even written an epic Hawaii DIY itinerary to ensure a great trip!

bucket list tour hawaii

My husband’s even ran marathons in Hawaii! Oahu, Maui, and Kauai – all 26.2 miles done! He’s planning on completing his last Hawaiian marathon next year on the Big Island. Do I run? Nope – I just bring malasadas to him at the end of the race.

Hence the reason for this epic Hawaii bucket list – all the things I’ve done and wanna do neatly compiled into a post and tied with a bow. I promise you’ll never be left bored on the islands with this giant list of over 200 things to do in Hawaii.

So pack up your swim and snorkel gear, start looking for flights to the islands, and use this massive Hawaii bucket list to find the ultimate paradise.

I’ve also got other information on Hawaii which you might find helpful!

General Things to Do in Hawaii (Obvious Hawaii Bucket List Items)

1. Go snorkeling with sea turtles ; Hawaii’s got a lot of them swimming below the surface. My favorite spot is Turtle Town in Maui . You can also see green turtles resting on the sand of so many beaches (specifics below).

The Ultimate Hawaii Bucket List: 200 Super Fun Things to do in Hawaii

2. Watch the dancers perform at a luau and learn to hula dance. Many also dance with fire sticks and knives (not something to try at home!)

3. See the islands from above by taking a helicopter ride ! There’s sandy beaches and reefs to admire, lava to scream about, and waterfalls to glide past! A helicopter ride in Kauai ’s the most impressive, in my opinion.

4. Try all the Hawaiian specialities , including loco moco, shave ice, ahi poke, acai, spam musubi, poi donuts, kalua pig, and macadamia nuts! I love POG juice, too (a mixture of passionfruit, orange, and guava).

5. If you’re visiting in winter, be sure to add whale watching to your Hawaii bucket list! There are plenty of organized boat tours, but you can see whales off the coast yourself!

The Ultimate Hawaii Bucket List: 200 Super Fun Things to do in Hawaii

6. Watch the sunset with a glass of champagne (or mai tai!) on a catamaran cruise. Because what’s better than watching the sun dip below the horizon with a glass of bubbly in hand?

7. Eat all the fresh fruit you can possibly find , because Hawaii’s got some of the freshest fruit in the world. Try pineapple, papaya, starfruit, dragonfruit, rambutan, mango, coconut, lilikoi, and longans. Grab some from one of the many honor-system road-side fruit stands dotted around the islands.

The Ultimate Hawaii Bucket List: 200 Super Fun Things to do in Hawaii

8. Take a surfing lesson – There’s no better place in the world, so just go for it!

9. Get lei’d ; sure, it could feel a tad cheesy, but nothing will get you into the aloha spirit faster than by wearing a fresh flower lei (or crown)!

Maui: The Valley Isle

We’re all kinds of obsessed with Maui, and we’ve been more times than I can remember. Highlights include watching the sunrise at Haleakala , fresh fish at Mama’s, and the thrilling Road to Hana . Oh, and of course our favorite white chocolate macadamia nut pancakes of all time are here.

Lanai: The Pineapple Isle

Most people never make it to Lanai, but how could I not include it on this Hawaii bucket list?! If you’ve been to Hawaii a bunch of times and haven’t ventured over to Lanai, make it your mission! And there’s no excuses – you can easily get from Maui to Lanai via a 90-minute public ferry! There’s zero traffic lights here, otherworldly landscapes, and even a feral cat sanctuary. If you wanna head to the more secluded spots, you’ll definitely need a 4×4.

Molokai: The Friendly Isle

Like Lanai, Molokai isn’t the most well-known spot in Hawaii. It’s a different way of life around here – there’s no huge resorts, luaus, or Michelin-starred restaurants. And it’s had quite the troubling past with the leper colony of Kalaupapa in the 1860’s where over 8,000 infected people were sent.

bucket list tour hawaii

201. Make the steep hike to Kalaupapa National Historical Park , the historic and scenic place of preserved leper colonies. Super interesting! If you’re a history buff, make sure to add this to your Hawaii bucket list. | Kalaupapa

Hope this helps you plan an epic trip to the islands! What’s still on your Hawaii bucket list and what are some of your favorite things to do in Hawaii?!

Maui Travel Guide + 7-Day Maui Itinerary by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel Spot

1. Go on a night dive to meet manta rays

If a unique underwater experience is what you’re after, a night dive to spot manta rays may just be what you’re looking for!

Image of a manta ray swimming in the ocean

This activity is offered on the Big Island and most tour operators start the journey from Kona. You’ll be taken to a quiet spot on the ocean before heading underwater with flashlights, which attract plankton and ultimately hungry manta rays!

Divers get to sit at the bottom of the ocean, but snorkelers are also welcome to join the adventure, only instead of diving, you’ll get to stay on the surface. Check the latest rates and availability .

2. See two of the world’s most active volcanoes

Seeing two of the world’s most active and dangerous volcanoes should be a must on everyone’s Hawaii bucket list, and the ultimate way to do so is by visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park .

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: Image of lava

Located on the Big Island, visiting this unique national park will not only give you the chance to see Kilauea and Mauna Loa up close (most people do it from a helicopter), but you will also be able to enjoy plenty of other volcanic-related adventures.

Hiking, summiting volcanoes, scenic driving, walking over lava fields, and braving lava tubes are just a few of the adrenaline-inducing activities you can try your hand at during your visit! Check out these amazing Hawaii volcano tours !

3. Hike Diamond Head

As one of the most iconic mountains in Hawaii, Diamond Head is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in the state and one you’ve probably seen already if you’ve ever gotten an Oahu postcard.

Image of a man and woman throwing shakas while standing at the Diamond Head hike platform overlooking Waikiki

The mountain is located close to Honolulu, and despite the fact that you’ll get to summit an actual volcano, the hike to the top is relatively short and sweet and can be completed by almost anyone with a decent fitness level.

Moreover, the trail to the top of Diamond Head is paved and there are stairs provided on the steepest parts, not to mention there are plenty of lookout points all throughout in case you need an excuse to stop and catch your breath!

4. Experience a luau

Luaus are one of the most iconic cultural offerings from Hawaii and experiencing at least one is an occasion you simply can’t miss out on during your trip.

This festivity has Polynesian roots and involves lots of music, dancing, cultural shows, and of course, plenty of delicious food!

During your time at a luau, you won’t only get to dive deep into Hawaiian culture while having fun, but you’ll also get the chance to sample plenty of authentic dishes. Check out the best luaus on Oahu , Maui , Kauai , and the Big Island .

5. Explore the Na Pali Coast

If a Jurassic Park-like landscape is what you’re looking for and you love adventuring out in nature, a visit to the Na Pali Coast is definitely a must on your Hawaii bucket list.

Image of a couple taking a selfie on a Na Pali Boat Tour

This coast stretches for over 14 miles on the shores of the island of Kauai and offers dramatic views everywhere you look. The landscape here is made up of gorgeous beaches, lush sea cliffs that tower over the water, humongous waterfalls, and valleys that look as though they came straight out of a painting.

Most visitors to Hawaii opt to see the Na Pali Coast from the comfort of a boat or helicopter, but if you want to dive deeper in, you can also enter the park and enjoy the many hiking trails on offer.

6. Hike to the top of the tallest mountain in the world

We’ve already mentioned visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in this post, but if you want to take things to the next level and don’t mind a bit of a challenge, you can actually summit the world’s tallest mountain during your visit to Hawaii!

Mauna Kea: Detailed image of the Mauna Kea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii

This volcano is a whopping 33,497 feet high, making it the tallest mountain in the entire world (most of it is underwater, though, which is why Everest is usually listed first).

With that said, summiting Mauna Kea is an experience worthy of being on any hiker’s bucket list. Even though the mountain is absolutely humongous, reaching its top usually takes around 8 hours one way.

It’s definitely not an easy hike, but if you come prepared and know how to adjust to the altitude, you should be able to cross this item off your bucket list!

Book a Hawaii Photo Shoot

Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that I’ll have more than just selfies. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.

7. Road To Hana

The Road to Hana is one of Hawaii’s most scenic drives.

Even though it’s only 70 miles long, the entire drive is filled with beautiful views every mile of the way and plenty of opportunities to stop, park your car, and head out on an adventure.

Road to Hana waterfalls: Image of a waterfall surrounded by lush green tropical jungle

The drive starts in the town of Kipahulu and ends in Kaipo, and all along the way, you’ll find glorious beaches, state parks, waterfalls, taro fields, and plenty more.

Some of the best Road to Hana stops include Hanawi Falls, Pua’a Ka’a Falls, Ho’okipa Beach Park, Wai’anapanapa State Park (Hawaii’s black beach), Hamoa Beach, Huelo Lookout, and Wailua State Wayside.

8. Swim with honus at Ho’okipa Beach Park

Honus, or Hawaiian green sea turtles, are one of the state’s most beloved animals, and getting to spot at least one of them is definitely worthy of being on your Hawaii bucket list!

Best sunsets in Maui: Image of Ho'okipa Beach Park in Paia Maui at sunset

If you want to go all in, though, head over to Ho’okipa Beach Park, where you can find hundreds of these endangered animals swimming close to the shore. During your time here, you can head out for a snorkeling session and get to swim right next to them!

If you linger at Ho’okipa until sunset, you should also be able to see plenty of them right on the beach, as this is the time of the day when they head to land to rest.

9. Gawk at the Grand Canyon of the Pacific

Even though the experience is vastly different than visiting the Grand Canyon in Arizona, Waimea Canyon is commonly nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” due to its massive size.

Image of a couple hiking in Waimea Canyon on Kauai

Here, you won’t only get to gawk at the beauty of a volcano from lots of lookout points, but you’ll also get the chance to go scenic driving or hiking if you want to explore it on a deeper level.

What makes Waimea Canyon so strikingly beautiful is the fact that its walls are splattered with greens and pinks, not to mention it boasts lots of looming cliffs, unique rock formations, and waterfalls .

10. Visit  Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach is constantly ranked as the most beautiful beach in Oahu and one of the prettiest in the entire world, and as soon as you get there, you’ll see exactly why that is!

Image of two girls with leis on their heads looking at the ocean with two small islands in the background at Lanikai beach on Oahu

The name Lani Kai means “heavenly ocean”, which is a pretty descriptive name of what this place looks like! During your time here, you can spend the day relaxing on its soft white sand or go for a swim or snorkeling session in its calm turquoise waters.

If you’re up for an adventure, another must-do activity is renting a kayak in order to head out into the ocean and explore the tiny islets located close by or simply see where the wind takes you!

11. Experience Honolulu

Even though nature and beach time are the reason you’re visiting Hawaii, spending at least one day exploring the capital is very much worth your while.

Find out the best things to do in Waikiki at night recommended by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel Spot! Image of Waikiki at night

Honolulu is a very interesting city because it mixes cosmopolitan vibes and everything you could expect to find in a major city with plenty of tropical goodness, gorgeous beaches, and nature all over.

Here, you’ll find tons of shopping opportunities, museums galore, a thriving foodie scene, and a plethora of cultural activities worth checking out. If you’re into nature, you’ll also find plenty of that, with lots of beaches, volcanoes, and state parks located within a short distance.

12. Hike Haleakala for sunrise

Haleakala is a dormant volcano located inside a national park of the same name.

Image of Haleakala National Park on Maui with lots of rocks at sunrise

This national park is known for its humongous size and for being home to plenty of different ecosystems that range from rainforests to scrublands, but the main reason visitors head here is in order to summit the volcano for the ultimate Hawaiian sunrise .

In order to reach the summit by sunrise, you need to start hiking at around 3:00 AM! Do note that bringing warm clothes is a must, and you need to make advanced reservations in order to do this hike.

Oahu Circle Island Tour FAQs

A circle island tour is a driving tour that goes around the island of Oahu and offers several stops along the way. Typically, Oahu island tours start in Waikiki and focus on the North and East shores of the island and they can last 5-8 hours.

If you hop in your car and want to drive around the island of Oahu, it will be about 96 miles. Keep in mind that the highest speed limit is 55mph and most of the time you’ll be driving well under that due to traffic or lower speed limits on certain roads.

It really depends on how many stops you make. If you want to stay in the car and just look out the window, you can do this in about 3 hours (depending on traffic). However, most people spend 6-8 hours driving around Oahu so they can stop at scenic lookouts, check out attractions, take photos, and eat lots of yummy food.

Pearl Harbor is at least a half-day excursion, if not a full day. That’s why you won’t find it featured on many Oahu island circle tours. If it is listed as a stop, chances are it’s just to see the USS Arizona Memorial

Overview of the Hawaii Bucket List Circle Island Tour of Oahu

The Hawaii Bucket List circle island tour of Oahu doesn’t really have a set itinerary. You tell the guide what’s on your Hawaii bucket list and they will figure out where to stop to check off a few items.

I did this tour with my 5-year-old son and we were the only people on the tour, which was awesome!

We got picked up at 7:45 am and we were back at the hotel by 4 pm. The timing can vary a bit depending on traffic and where your hotel is.

Our Oahu Circle Island Tour Itinerary

  • Halona Blowhole and Lava Tube
  • An Oahu Pier (basically just for photos)
  • Leonard’s Malasada Truck
  • Tropical Farms Macadamia Nut Outlet
  • Photos on a Palm Tree
  • Photos on a Beach Swing
  • Food Trucks for Lunch
  • Laniakea Beach (aka where the turtles hang out)
  • Photos at Haleiwa Sign
  • Shave Ice at Aloha General Store

Of course, in between stops we chatted about Oahu and saw some breathtaking views of the island.

I asked our tour guide about what other visitors do on their tours and he said sometimes they ask to do the Byodo-In Temple , Dole Plantation , or somewhere else specific.

Why We Chose This Oahu Day Tour

I’ve been wanting to try an Oahu circle island tour for years, especially since I launched this site. There are tons of Oahu tour companies and a lot of them offer very similar routes.

Image of a mom holding a 5yo boy in a lush garden with a bird of paradise flower in the foreground

Hawaii Bucket List Tour stood out because they are a newer company that features Native Hawaiian tour guides who are passionate about helping visitors check items off their Hawaii bucket list in a responsible and respectful way.

And I was really intrigued by the concept of the bucket list adventure. It’s sort of like a choose-your-own-adventure with no set itinerary.

Since we visit Oahu a lot, it seemed like a great way to skip some of the attractions we’ve already done and see what we’ve missed on past trips. And I was totally right!

What to Know about this Oahu Circle Island Tour Before You Go:

Hotel pickup.

We stayed at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel right on the edge of Waikiki near the Honolulu Zoo .

The Hawaii Bucket List Tour van was able to drive right up to the curb to pick us up. It was easy to identify that it was the right van because the name was printed clearly on it.

We did have a random guy also get on the van thinking it was a different tour company but our tour guide kindly let him know he was in the wrong van.

The van itself has a few rows of seats and can hold 11 guests, I believe. So this is definitely a small group Oahu circle tour.

I chose to bring our Bubble Bum inflatable booster with us. It’s easy to install and I knew it would fit my 5-year-old well.

Image of a boy with a bunch of shell bracelets sitting on a booster seat inside a van on a circle the island tour in Oahu

But, Hawaii Bucket List can also provide car seats. I’d check with them ahead of time so they know how old your kiddo is so they can verify they have the right size car seat.

Restroom Breaks

Anytime I travel with my kids, I’m always on the lookout for restrooms in case we have an emergency.

Our guide Lion was really great about pointing out all the restrooms at each stop as well as giving us a heads up if it might be a while until the next restroom.

We thought there were plenty of restroom breaks and never felt like we had to “hold it” very long.

Our Highlights of this Oahu Tour and What You Should Look Out For

Oahu lava tube.

I’ve been visiting Oahu for years and years but I’d never been inside a lava tube on Oahu!

Image of a mom and boy waving shakas while standing on the beach of a small cove on Oahu

Lion knew exactly how to climb down the rocks to get to the right spot and how to covertly take our photos in between other groups looking for their Insta-worthy shots.

Of course, he also knew where to take the best photos and how to get the perfect angles.

Image of a boy waving a shaka inside a dark lava tube on Oahu

He also knew exactly how far we could safely walk inside the lava tube.

Leonard’s Malasadas

If you’ve ever been to Waikiki before, I’m sure you’ve heard of Leonard’s Bakery. It’s just outside of Waikiki and there’s usually a huge line that wraps around the bakery. It’s nuts!

Image of a mom and son posing in front of a red and white striped food truck on Oahu

We stopped at one of their food trucks in Kaneohe and we were the only people there. That means we were eating our tasty, freshly made malasadas about 2 minutes after we ordered.

North Shore Food Trucks

When lunchtime came around, Lion brought us to one of the largest food truck areas on Oahu.

There were food trucks featuring all kinds of different cuisines.

Image of a yellow food truck for Mike's Huli Chicken in North Shore Oahu

While we could have stopped here on our own, Lion let us know which food trucks serve the food quickly and which ones take a really, really, long time.

This was the type of insider info I needed when traveling with my son. We’ve definitely eaten at some food trucks in the past that took an hour to get our food.

Because of his local tip, we found a place with tasty food that was served within 5 minutes!

Laniakea Beach (Turtle Beach)

Many people visiting Oahu want to see Hawaiian sea turtles but aren’t sure where to go.

Image of a mom and son smiling at Laniakea Beach with sea turtles in the background

Laniakea Beach is one of the best places to see turtles on Oahu , but the parking situation is crazy. Traffic is always bad on this stretch of highway and there’s either hard-to-find street parking or a busy lot.

Our guide Lion dropped us off and told us to head over to the turtles and he’d find parking and meet us over there.

Image of a boy looking at sea turtles on the beach on Oahu

My son and I were blown away by how many sea turtles we saw just relaxing on the beach or swimming in the water. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that many turtles in one spot before. It was magical!

And as we were leaving, my son’s flip flop got washed out by a wave and our guide Lion jumped into the water to save it!

Oahu Instagrammable Spots

But I think the biggest highlight for me personally was having our tour guide Lion airdrop me almost 100 really awesome photos that I know I wouldn’t have gotten on my own.

He captured amazing pictures of my son as well as the two of us on our special mom/son adventure.

Image of a mom and son standing underneath a pier on Oahu

I’d seen photos on Instagram where people were posing under a pier, but I couldn’t figure out where it was or how to get there. And I know I would have driven right by it without realizing it.

Image of a man taking a photo of a boy on a beach swing on Oahu

He also knew exactly where to go to find a beach swing that didn’t have a million people waiting to take Instagram photos.

Image of a boy sitting on a palm tree that's over the ocean and beach

And he stopped at a really cool palm tree that jutted out over the beach. It’s something that I wouldn’t have noticed just driving by but it made such a cool Oahu photo spot!

Hawaii Bucket List Tour vs Driving Around Oahu Yourself

My family ALWAYS rents a car on Oahu, even when we stay in Waikiki. We love the freedom of going where ever we want whenever we want.

We haven’t done a circle island tour of Oahu in the past because I figured they were just for people who didn’t rent a car.

Boy was I wrong!

Image of a mom holding a boy in front of the Haleiwa North Shore sign

I’ve driven my family on many Oahu road trips and they have always been a bit stressful. I end up focusing so much on GPS that I can’t take the time to look out the window and enjoy all the scenery!

And if something is closed or too crowded, it’s hard to quickly come up with another plan. Don’t even get me started on the crazy parking situation, especially on the North Shore.

Leave it to the Professionals

I underestimated how relaxed I could be hopping in the van and letting someone else handle the logistics.

Image of a mom and son sitting on a beach swing on Oahu

It was fun being able to let our guide Lion know the types of things we’d love to see and do and let him figure out how to make it happen.

And I’m still so thankful that he dropped us off at Laniakea Beach so we could spend more time with the turtles while he dealt with the insane parking lot.

Oahu Circle Island Tour Tips for Families

What to wear.

It really depends on what you want to do on your tour. We wore t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops.

Image of a mom and son looking out at the calm ocean at Halona Blowhole

If you want to do more water-related things, you’ll want to wear your swimsuit under your clothes. If you’ll be doing a hike, wear sturdy shoes.

What to Bring

I brought along a beach bag with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a water bottle.

I also made sure I had cash so I could tip our guide and in case we stopped anywhere that was cash only.

Almost everywhere we went on Oahu accepted cards, even food trucks.

How Much Does it Cost and Where is it Located?

This Oahu circle island tour by Hawaii Bucket List Tour is $179 for adults and $109 for kids.

They offer pick-up from Waikiki and they will travel all around Oahu for your tour.

bucket list tour hawaii

So, is this Hawaii Bucket List Tour Worth It?

I was seriously impressed with this circle island tour of Oahu. Having done many, many trips to Oahu with and without kids, I wasn’t sure I was going to get much out of it.

It actually opened my eyes up to how many things I’d never seen or done on Oahu!

Plus, it was pretty amazing to not have to deal with traffic, navigating road construction, or parking.

If you want a stress-free way to see Oahu, I highly recommend this tour. Check availability for your travel dates .

One of the things that made me choose this from all the tour options was the smaller group size and it did not disappoint. From the moment he collected us from our hotel, Bon Jovy worked hard to adapt the tour to meet our group’s specific interests, really going above and beyond to make sure we had a really memorable day. When it became clear that a slight misunderstanding had led to us not quite completing the whole circuit as anticipated, he extended our tour significantly to make sure no-one was disappointed. Going to some more off the beaten track places as well as the ‘must-do’s’ was a highlight for me and Bon Jovy’s thoughtful and informative commentary was awesome too. Join Bucket list group to explore the two islands of Hawaii – Maui & Kauai that are renowned for their rugged landscapes of cliffs, waterfalls, tropical foliage and beaches with gold, red, black and even green sands.

Maui is an island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago. Sprawling Haleakala National Park encompasses the island’s highest peak, volcanic Haleakala, as well as the pools and waterfalls of Ohe’o Gulch, accessed via scenic, winding Hana Highway. The island’s 30 miles of beaches include golden-crescent Kapalua, sheltered from strong currents by lava-rock promontories.

Kauai is an island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago. It’s nicknamed “the Garden Isle” thanks to the tropical rainforest covering much of its surface. The dramatic cliffs and pinnacles of its Na Pali Coast have served as a backdrop for major Hollywood films, while 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon and the Nounou Trails traversing the Sleeping Giant mountain ridge are hiking destinations.

Truly one of the best trips I’ve ever had. It was my first time ever doing a solo trip. Himanshu gave us an itinerary and a list of good traveling tips for Egypt months in advance. He is very organized and responsive so I never had any concerns. Everything was already taken care of. All I had to do was show up. The scenes in Egypt were breathtaking and I saw places that I never thought I’d see.

Had a great time in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons. Land in Salt Lake City & the rest of the trip is taken care by BLGT.. you have absolutely nothing to worry about.. logistics, campsite booking, tickets, planning is all done by them. We had a great guide with us through out the trip. Would definitely be going with BLGT in future.

The trip was to the Galapagos and it was wonderful Quito was also a beautiful City.

This was a trip of a lifetime, been wanting to do this for a long time. All planning done right and price was great can’t wait for my next trip, unfortunately I can only do one a year

Had a great experience through BLGT recently in Alaska; appreciated the trip leaders’ ability to handle logistics so you could focus on the experience and having fun. It was just like traveling with a group of friends, with the added bonus of the itinerary being all taken care of.

Oahu Bucket List: 45+ of the Coolest Things To Do in Oahu, Hawaii

Last Updated: January 6, 2024 //  by  Ashley Smith Leave a Comment

If you’re searching for the coolest things to do in Oahu to round out your Oahu bucket list, you’ve come to the right wahine . I’ve been to Hawaii a fair numbers of times already and, with the exception of a few days in Maui, I’ve spent all the rest of my time on the island of Oahu.

There are plenty of people out there who’d call me crazy. Yes, there are many other islands to explore. Yes, Oahu can be “touristy.” And yes, maybe the other islands are more beautiful. I get it. But don’t be so quick to write off the state’s main island. #hatersgonnahate

Oahu is so much more than resort-packed Waikiki Beach. There are actually so many awesome things to do here that you may never want to leave. So if you’ve got some time on Oahu coming up and you’re looking for the best ways to spend your days in paradise, start here with this super rewarding Oahu bucket list.

Best tools for your Oahu bucket list

In case you’re just beginning your Hawaii trip planning, here are the tools you’ll need for your Oahu bucket list. (These are the travel resources I always use myself.)

How to save money on your Oahu bucket list

I can’t stress this enough: if you’re looking to save money on your trip to Oahu, consider picking up an Oahu GoCity pass . This all-inclusive sightseeing pass includes a TON of the most popular items on the Oahu bucket list and all for one low flat fee.

You can choose from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7-day passes and you’ll save up to 50% on the cost of these awesome activities and attractions. Plus, they will literally refund you the difference if you don’t save money! (I personally love these kinds of all-inclusive passes and get them wherever I can.)

You can view the entire list of activities and attractions here, but I’ll also mention whether each item on the Oahu bucket list is included with the pass.

Check out the Oahu GoCity pass for yourself here.

Where to stay on Oahu

There are several different parts of the island you can stay in, and you can find awesome hotels and resorts in all of them. I always use Booking.com , but definitely check Hotels.com and Expedia for comparable deals.

To make things easy for you, here are some popular options:

  • Wayfinder Waikiki – One reviewer calls it “a funky little gem outside of the chaos of the main tourist area of Waikiki” and I think that’s perfect.
  • Prince Waikiki – Gorgeous property on the marina, great views, tons of on-site dining.
  • Turtle Bay Resort – Famous, gorgeous, top-notch accommodations on private land and shoreline.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Oahu North Shore – Friendly hotel in a quieter location that’s convenient to places like the Polynesian Cultural Center and Kualoa Ranch. (Both on this Oahu bucket list.)

bucket list tour hawaii

Rental properties are another great way to go if you’re going to be spending significant time on the island or looking to share space with family and friends.

This is also the best way to go if you want to stay in parts of the island where there aren’t any hotels. (Which is most of the island actually!) Check out the many great options on VRBO to find a property that best fits your needs.

bucket list tour hawaii

How to get around on Oahu

By far the easiest way to check off all the items on your Oahu bucket list is to rent your own car . Picking up rental cars at the Honolulu airport is notoriously a pain in the ass, but it really is worth it overall. And really, it’s the only way to efficiently get around the island. *sigh* The price you have to pay for paradise.

I always use RentalCars.com because I’ve found they have the best deals and the most rental companies available. (Some rental car sites don’t show you all the brands for some reason.)

Pro tip: Rent yourself either a convertible or a Jeep Wrangler. A convertible is just the best way to *island vibes* yourself around Oahu. And a Jeep is going to be necessary (or at least preferred) for some of the more rugged areas of the island.

Things to do on Oahu

In addition to the 45+ items on this Oahu bucket list, there are many more fun activities to do here. Take a look at all the Oahu options on Viator and Get Your Guide to see if there’s something else you might enjoy. (There really is so much to do here!)

And if you want more of a truly local experience, check out these great options from ToursByLocals , another favorite tour operator of my readers. All of these links take you right to the Oahu pages.

Have motion sickness?

I used to suffer from brutal motion sickness that controlled just about every aspect of my life. Until I cured myself. (No joke!) My Hawaii trip in 2013 and my desire to check off so many ocean-centered items on my Oahu bucket list was actually my breaking point.

If you also suffer from motion sickness, you’ll probably benefit from reading my post on the motion sickness cure that changed my life . THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Give it a read and see if it’s for you.

Now, let’s get to the Oahu bucket list!

bucket list tour hawaii

1. Get lei’d at the airport

Any movie or TV show you’ve ever seen where someone arrives to the airport in Hawaii shows that person being greeted by someone putting a lei around their neck. Spoiler alert: this is not real life! (But… it can be !)

Being welcomed to Hawaii with a flower lei is a tradition that goes back to the early 1900s. However, as the number of tourists increased into the literal millions, that tradition became more exclusive and strategic.

If you’re meeting friends or family in Hawaii for the first time, there’s a good chance they’ll pony up and greet you at the airport with a lei. There are several lei vendors outside the airport where they can purchase real flower lei for their visitors.

Otherwise, you can totally arrange your own personal lei greeting at the Honolulu airport ! If getting lei’d at the airport has always been on your Oahu bucket list, don’t wait for your friends or family to move there, make it happen!

A lei-making class is included in the Oahu GoCity pass . Pro tip: Make sure you adhere to proper lei etiquette .

bucket list tour hawaii

2. Visit Waikiki & Waikiki Beach

Hilarious, right? Me throwing Waikiki Beach out there right off the bat. It’s true that Waikiki is, like, far from the highlight of any Oahu bucket list, but it’s still something you should check out while you’re here. It’s the Eiffel Tower of Paris, the Colosseum of Rome; it’s Nick Tahou’s, home of the Garbage Plate , if you ever find yourself in Rochester, NY.

Waikiki is Hawaii’s main resort, shopping, dining, and nightlife area. It’s loaded with skyscrapers and traffic and bodies so sunburned it’ll make you cringe. But it’s also loaded with scenes from your favorite movies and TV shows, glitz and glamour, good food, and million dollar views. So there’s that.

Stay in Waikiki if you want to be at the center of it all, or just spend a day here seeing all there is to see. While you’re in Waikiki, don’t miss:

Three Waikiki activities are included with the Oahu GoCity pass : a cruise with snorkeling, surfboard rental, and sunset beach yoga.

bucket list tour hawaii

3. Duke’s Restaurant

Duke’s Waikiki never disappoints with great food and service, spectacular views, and fun atmosphere. (Fabulous breakfast!)

4. The statue of Duke Kahanamoku

Getting a picture with the statue of Duke (Hawaiian legend and father of modern surfing) at the entrance to Waikiki Beach is a must for any Oahu bucket list.

5. Waikiki Beach

The most famous beach in Hawaii with priceless views of Diamond Head , sunsets, and wannabe surf legends. You can even take your own surfing lesson here at this iconic beach!

6. International Marketplace

Open-air shopping and entertainment area in the center of Waikiki. Great for picking up souvenirs for friends and family that you’ll probably end up keeping for yourself. No judgment, bruh.

7. Take a catamaran cruise

Sunset catamaran cruises out of Waikiki are one of the things that was most recommended to me for my latest visit to Oahu (August 2023). The one I just linked to has almost 700 reviews and 5 stars! (Two different Waikiki catamaran cruises are included in the Oahu GoCity pass .)

bucket list tour hawaii

8. Explore Pearl Harbor

Every single Oahu bucket list should include a visit to Pearl Harbor, one of the most significant locations in U.S. history.

There are tons of sites to visit here, whether you’re a World War II buff (like myself) or not. If you want to just see the basics, you can; and if you want to spend two full days here (like myself), you can do that too.

Depending on how far you want to go into Pearl Harbor/WWII history will determine how many of the Pearl Harbor sites you should add to your Oahu bucket list. Either way, here are the top sites you should consider:

bucket list tour hawaii

9. Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center

To get the most rudimentary idea of what happened at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, make this your first stop. The PH Visitor’s Center is free to visit and you’ll be able to explore the museum and watch a film that describes the events. *Bring tissues, just saying.

Be sure to check out my full guide to visiting Pearl Harbor . It has all the important stuff you NEED to know before you go and it’s full of helpful tips.

bucket list tour hawaii

10. USS Arizona memorial

When people think of visiting “Pearl Harbor,” this is what they’re thinking of. Pearl Harbor is so much more than the Arizona memorial, but it has undoubtedly become the symbol of Japan’s attack on the United States. A visit to the Arizona is gut-wrenching but absolutely vital for your visit to Hawaii.

Visiting the Arizona is free and doesn’t take too much time. The site is run by the National Park Service and includes a roundtrip boat ride to the memorial and a little bit of time there. Visit the PH Visitor’s Center first if you want to learn about why this memorial is so significant. (A USS Arizona narrated audio tour is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .)

bucket list tour hawaii

11. Battleship Missouri

The USS Missouri was a WWII battleship that served as the location of the surrender ceremony that ended the war. Great guided tours of the ship are included and you can see some really unique history here (like where a kamikaze plane hit the side, for example). (Admission is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .)

Also check out : Here’s How Much All Pearl Harbor Tickets Cost + How You Can Save

12. Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

If you’re an aviation geek (like myself), you’ll love the PH Aviation Museum . Really cool collection and stories of WWII aircraft (but also other stuff too). You can also tour the historic hangar and see bullet holes from the December 7th attack all over the place. (Admission is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .)

bucket list tour hawaii

13. Top of the Tower tour

The PH Aviation Museum just added a brand new feature: the Top of the Tower tour which takes you to the top of the air control tower. The views are incredible but the explanation of the Pearl Harbor attack from that vantage point is game-changing. This was one of the coolest things I did in 2023.

14. Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum

This is such a cool place to learn about submarine warfare. There’s a museum, tons of watercraft, a large memorial, and you can tour the entire USS Bowfin submarine . (Admission is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .)

selfie of me snorkeling

15. Go snorkeling

Hawaii may be beautiful on top, but it’s just as stunning below the surface too. Be sure to squeeze some snorkeling into your Oahu bucket list. Two of the most popular spots for snorkeling are:

  • Hanauma Bay down on the southeasternmost tip of the island
  • Shark’s Cove in historic Haleiwa on the North Shore

But since these are some of the most popular areas, keep in mind that that means it’s probably going to be crowded . And I don’t know about you, but I hate getting slapped in the face with other people’s flippers. Turtle flippers? That’s another story.

bucket list tour hawaii

The good thing about the Hawaiian islands is that you can literally drop a snorkel into just about any part of the ocean and you’ll see some awesome stuff. Visit these popular spots on your own or just bring your snorkel gear down to whatever beach you end up on .

If you want something a little more “expert” level, you can also book spots on some great snorkeling tours to make sure you hit up the best areas to see everything you want to see. (Like gnarly sea turtles, dude!)

There are four snorkeling options included in the Oahu GoCity pass , including Hanauma Bay.

bucket list tour hawaii

16. Snorkel with wild dolphins

One of my most epic adventures to date was the day I spent with Wild Side Specialty Tours. This small-group snorkeling excursion is led by eco-conscience marine biologists and we were able to swim with wild dolphins, sea turtles, tons of fish, and even a pod of pilot whales. It was the most amazing day. (I did their Best of the West tour.)

Also check out my post on what it’s like snorkeling in Belize in the world’s 2nd largest barrier reef.

bucket list tour hawaii

17. Spot a Humuhumunukunukuapua’a

…or at least learn how to say it! The Humuhumunukunukuapua’a is the state fish of Hawaii (and is much more easily referred to as a Reef Triggerfish). I learned this fun word on my first trip to Oahu back in 2007, and was so excited to finally see one while snorkeling here in 2013.

So while you’re out bobbing around the island of Oahu, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for one of these super colorful fish.

bucket list tour hawaii

18. Hike Diamond Head Crater

You’ve seen Diamond Head probably a thousand times in photos of Waikiki/Honolulu, but did you know you can hike to the top ? The hike is relatively easy and will reward you with killer views of Waikiki.

The entire hike is on either a paved or dirt path which makes it fairly easy. But, it can be pretty steep and it’s fully exposed, so it’s very hot. Bring lots of water, wear a sun hat and protective clothing, and take it slow.

Diamond Head State Monument is run by the Division of State Parks. It costs $5 to enter, parking is $10, and you’ll need to reserve a time slot. Set aside about 2 hours on your Oahu bucket list to hike up and down the crater.

A Diamond Head shuttle and hike is included in the Oahu GoCity pass . And my full guide on hiking Diamond Head is in that link – it’s got everything you need to know!

bucket list tour hawaii

19. Attend a luau

Obviously one of the top items on any decent Oahu bucket list is to attend a luau. But which one? There are plenty to choose from, and they’re all unique in their own ways.

Some are touristy garbage, while others are more authentic and overall enjoyable. Some are huge, and others are more intimate. I’ve personally been to two of Oahu’s luaus and they were incredibly different from one another—the luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center (twice actually) and most recently the luau at Experience Nutridge.

bucket list tour hawaii

Polynesian Cultural Center

The one at the Polynesian Cultural Center is one of the most popular, and biggest, luaus on Oahu. This is actually an all-day experience that’s well worth it.

The pros: You’ll get to explore the entire cultural village to learn about many different Polynesian cultures, you’ll have a fantastic luau dinner, and you’ll get to see an incredible show.

The cons: This luau is alcohol-free ( boooo ) and it definitely feels more like an entertainment venture than anything else. You’ll be one of about 700 people at your luau.

That being said, I’ve enjoyed both of my luau experiences here . The PCC is anything but intimate, but the time spent in the Polynesian villages is super fun, the food is great, and the show is incredible. I highly recommend a visit here.

bucket list tour hawaii

Experience Nutridge

On my latest trip to Oahu in August 2023, I went in the opposite direction and booked a spot at the Experience Nutridge luau .

The pros: This luau is much more intimate at only about 75 people max and you really do feel welcome and appreciated here. (I attended this luau solo on my birthday and, between the amazing staff and the other awesome luau-goers, I never felt like I was here alone.)

The venue is incredible (on top of a mountain in Honolulu on a beautiful estate), the staff is so friendly and fun and talented, and there’s booze (they even give you a free welcome drink).

bucket list tour hawaii

The cons: I wasn’t the biggest fan of the food, but that’s not really why I booked anyway.

Both of these luaus are unforgettable and worthwhile experiences but vastly different from each other. I’m sitting here trying to decide which one I would recommend if you had to choose, and I honestly can’t pick. Let’s just say, you won’t be disappoint with either of them!

Other luaus for your Oahu bucket list

Beyond these two, there are several more luaus on Oahu. I can’t give you any firsthand advice on these, but some other popular options include:

  • Paradise Cove luau , close to the Ko’Olina resort area
  • Chief’s Luau in Kapolei
  • Toa Luau at Waimea Valley
  • Germaine’s luau , also in Kapolei
  • Ka Moana luau is included in the Oahu GoCity pass
  • And the Ka Wa’a luau at Disney Aulani Resort (geared towards children and families, obviously)

bucket list tour hawaii

20. Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center

OK, even if you decide to attend a different luau from this one, you should still consider a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center . You can still visit the PCC without attending the luau.

bucket list tour hawaii

You can visit the six historically-accurate cultural villages (across 42 acres) to learn about different Polynesian cultures. You’ll get to experience all the cultural presentations and activities. You’ll learn how to hula in Hawaii, race a canoe and throw spears in Tonga, learn about warriors in Fiji, and watch a guy climb a 40-foot palm tree in his bare feet in Samoa. (And so much more!)

You can also attend the incredible nighttime show full of beautiful dancing and fire shows. And you can shop in the marketplace. All without having to attend the luau.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

bucket list tour hawaii

21. Explore Jurassic Park

It took me three visits to Hawaii to finally check this off my Oahu bucket list and it was so worth the wait. Kualoa Ranch is where they’ve filmed (and continue to film) tons of well-known movies and TV Shows. And they offer a ton of different tours so you can visit your favorite filming locations.

For me, that meant spending the day at both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World . I booked this Jurassic Adventure Tour that takes you to tons of filming locations from both franchises. You get to learn all kinds of behind-the-scenes info about the movies and even walk around in some of the sets. If you’re any bit of a dino-geek like me, you’ll love this tour!

bucket list tour hawaii

This is also where they filmed things like Lost , Hawaii Five-0 , Jumanji (the newer ones), 50 First Dates , and a bunch of action films I’ve never seen. And you get to see locations and props from all of them.

Book the same Jurassic Adventure Tour that I did here. Get my hilarious shirt here . (A couple of Kualoa Ranch tours are also included in the Oahu GoCity pass , just not this one.)

bucket list tour hawaii

22. Stroll the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet & Flea Market

One of the oldest activities on your Oahu bucket list is going to be the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet . This massive collection of vendors has been happening every week since 1979.

You can find everything here —souvenirs, home décor, clothing and jewelry, local artists, food trucks and vendors, and just about anything else you can think of.

The Aloha Stadium swap meet takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from 8am – 3pm, and every Sunday from 6:30am – 3pm. It’s located all around the perimeter of Aloha Stadium. It’s free to enter but costs $2 (cash) to park. Once inside, some of the vendors will accept credit card but definitely be prepared with cash.

And even though they’ll soon be tearing down Aloha Stadium to build the new Aloha Stadium Entertainment District, the weekly swap meet isn’t going anywhere.

bucket list tour hawaii

23. Visit the Dole Plantation

The Dole Plantation is “Hawaii’s complete pineapple experience” and it really has something for everyone. You can ride a cheesy pineapple train around the property to learn about growing pineapples, get lost in the “world’s largest maze” in the pineapple garden, and eat so many delicious pineapple things .

Honestly, you’ve never had pineapple this good in your life. I’ve been here twice, and the last time I literally just left with a pineapple as a souvenir. It didn’t survive the day.

The Dole Plantation is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

bucket list tour hawaii

24. Walk the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail

The Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail is one of the easier “hikes” on this Oahu bucket list. It still climbs a little in elevation, but the entire path is paved road which makes it considerably easier (and more accessible) than most. (Check out my full guide in the link above.)

The trail winds along the coastline where, in the winter months, you can see just loads of humpback whales. At the end of the trail is the Makapu’u Lighthouse and an observation platform overlooking the ocean.

Parking at the trailhead is free and you can park along the road if the lot is full. Pro tip: Do this hike at sunrise like I did. Pure magic.

The Makapu’u Lighthouse hike (with transportation) is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

bucket list tour hawaii

25. Explore historic Haleiwa and the North Shore

Exploring the historic surf town of Haleiwa on the North Shore is such a fun way to spend a day of your Oahu bucket list. Leave Honolulu behind and feel like you’re really in a small surf-obsessed village on a remote island .

This super laid-back town is full of cool shops, chill restaurants, art galleries, and beautiful beaches. Parking your car and simply walking the streets with no agenda is the way to go here. But if you do want some kind of plan, you should also…

A day trip to the North Shore is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

bucket list tour hawaii

26. Get lunch from a North Shore shrimp truck

Shrimp trucks are super popular on the North Shore and the garlic butter shrimp is where it’s at . Besides being delicious, this is such a fast, easy, and surprisingly affordable way to grab lunch here.

On the recommendation of my friend Moani (whose Hawaii-focused food and travel blog you should definitely follow while you’re here), I went with Jenny’s Shrimp Truck and, yall. YALL. It was so freaking good. I mean, shrimply heavenly.

Other popular North Shore shrimp trucks include:

  • Giovanni’s – the original NS shrimp truck that started the trend
  • Fumi’s Kahuku

bucket list tour hawaii

27. Eat shave ice

OK so yes maybe this Oahu bucket list is just all about eating, so sue me. But after you eat your garlic shrimp you’re going to need dessert. And yes, ice counts as dessert.

Hawaiian shave ice is simple, but perfect. It’s literally just thinly shaved ice covered in flavorful syrups and other toppings like ice cream and fruit. The best part is that it can be whatever you want it to be.

There are shave ice stands all over Oahu , but some are more well-known than others. (Pro tip: If they spell it “shaved ice,” stay away.) Be sure to stop by:

  • Matsumoto’s on the North Shore – the most famous of them all. Be prepared to wait in a very long line.
  • Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha in Honolulu – I went here after seeing this place on the show Somebody Feed Phil . I’m not really a fan of the show, but I am a fan of being able to add adzuki beans to my ice. (Something I ate a lot of during my summer in Taiwan and that you almost never see here in the U.S.) All in all, this place is fantastic.

bucket list tour hawaii

28. Pick up some mac nuts

The North Shore Macadamia Nut Company is a small family-run operation that’s actually the only working macadamia nut farm on Oahu . Stop by their shop where you can pick up any and all kinds of macadamia nuts, products, and gifts.

29. Take a surfing lesson

Hawaii and surfing go together like, well, garlic butter and shrimp. And even if you’ve never so much as laid eyes on a surfboard before (ahem, guilty), I highly recommend adding a surfing lesson to your Oahu bucket list.

Really, I had never so much as touched a surfboard before when I decided to add this private surfing lesson to my itinerary. And I’ll be honest—I was super nervous before my lesson. I’m a good swimmer, pretty fit, maybe a little too adventurous for my own good, but still nervous. My expectations were also super low. I expected to have a fun time trying to surf, but never in a million years did I think I would actually ride a wave.

bucket list tour hawaii

And yall. YALL. I RODE SO MANY WAVES. Seriously, it was incredible. This was undoubtedly the highlight of my August 2023 Oahu trip. Yes, I face-planted plenty of times. I walked away with cuts, contusions, a fat lip, and what I’m pretty sure were a couple of bruised ribs… but it was SO FUN! (Seriously though, get your tetanus shot first , lol.)

Waikiki Beach or North Shore?

You can take lessons on Waikiki Beach (considered to be the birthplace of surfing) or the North Shore (definitely the world headquarters of surfing). I opted for the iconic North Shore and loved every minute of it. The waves were the perfect size, the beach was beautiful, and there were curious sea turtles swimming all around us!

bucket list tour hawaii

Long story short, it was the perfect ocean adventure for my Oahu bucket list. I highly recommend trying this out for yourself if you’re not afraid of the ocean and a few bruises. These lessons include all the equipment you’ll need, expert instructors, and no experience is required. (Some even have the option of adding a photographer.) Check out these options:

  • Small-group surfing lesson (2 hours, many times available) on either Waikiki or the North Shore
  • Private group lesson for just your party (how fun would that be!) on Waikiki or the North Shore
  • This one-on-one private lesson I took on the North Shore. (It cost barely more than the group lesson.) They offer private lessons on Waikiki as well.

A private group surfing lesson and Waikiki surfboard rental are both included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

30. Swim in the waterfall at Waimea Valley

Since you’re already on the North Shore in your bathing suit, next up on the Oahu bucket list is a visit to Waimea Valley . This hidden piece of Oahu includes a beautiful walk through the botanical gardens which ends at Waimea Falls, a cool waterfall that you can swim in (and under).

The Waimea Valley botanical gardens are included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

31. Eat at the world’s cheapest Michelin star restaurant

Yes! Somehow here in the country’s most expensive state you’ll find the world’s least expensive Michelin-starred restaurant: Tim Ho Wan . “Dim sum perfection” they call themselves, and you can be the judge here at the Royal Hawaiian Center in Honolulu.

Michelin star dining has gotten pretty much out of control at this point (in terms of both cost and ridiculous factor), but if you want to say you’ve done it, this is the best deal. Tim Ho Wan is open every day from 10am – 9pm.

32. Do the Lanikai Pillbox Hike

If you prefer to stay on land, here’s another great hike for your Oahu bucket list. The Lanikai Pillbox hike is fairly easy on the difficulty scale. (It can get slippery though, especially when it’s really dry.) It takes you up the ridge where you’ll pass a couple of WWII pillboxes.

The trail is lined with beautiful flowers and plants and you’ll be able to get some amazing views over the ocean and surrounding areas. Since it’s over on the east side of the island, this is another popular sunrise hike .

bucket list tour hawaii

Pro tip: There’s no parking at the trailhead as it’s in a neighborhood, but you can park for free at nearby Kailua Beach Park and walk the 15-20 minutes to the trailhead. For everything else you need to know, read my super helpful guide to the Lanikai Pillbox trail .

33. Hit up the poke bar at Foodland

One of the best things I learned on my most recent visit to Oahu was that Foodland (the local grocery chain) has one hell of a kickass poke bar . The couple I met while waiting for my rental car told me, “It’s like a deli, but instead of sliced meat it’s twenty different kinds of poke.” They’re weren’t lying.

I made this my lunch on more than one occasion and I only wish I could try them all. If you want some delicious poke, tons of different options, and all for a super reasonable price, head to the nearest Foodland.

Pro tip: Get a Foodland member card to save lots of money on your poke. Or if you’re staying with a friend, just use their phone number. I’m sure they won’t mind. 🙂

34. Visit a museum

If you find you need a break from the sun (it happens), consider adding one (or all) of these museums to your Oahu bucket list:

The Bishop Museum – Hawaii’s “premier natural and cultural history museum.” You can learn all about Hawaiian history and culture, but also about the surrounding land and sea. (Included in the Oahu GoCity pass .)

Iolani Palace – This iconic building was the former residence of the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii. (King Kamehameha lived here.) You might also know it as Five-0 headquarters, just saying. And you can take a tour of it! (Included in the Oahu GoCity pass .)

U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii – If you want to learn about Pearl Harbor but in a much less-crowded location, hit up the Army Museum instead of the Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center. Seriously, I found the exhibits here much easier to follow than those at PH. Plus, there’s air conditioning, and WWII tanks, and it’s free to visit, and they validate parking. Convinced yet?

35. Eat SPAM and eggs for breakfast

Speaking of WWII, I bring you: the wonder that is SPAM. SPAM became popular in Hawaii during the war and remains an iconic piece of Hawaiian culture . To honor that history and to experience something pretty unique to this destination, order yourself some SPAM and eggs for breakfast at your local diner or café.

I actually like SPAM, but the runny egg yolk is definitely needed to tone down its saltiness. On my most recent trip, I had SPAM and over-easy eggs with hash browns at Cinnamon’s Restaurant in Kailua. Highly recommend!

Breakfast not your jam? Then try musubi, also known as SPAM sushi. Big fan here.

36. Catch a sunrise on the beach

I don’t know why sunsets get all the glory; in Hawaii, the sunrises are just as epic ! While in Hawaii working on my Oahu bucket list, the friends I was staying with suggested I catch the sunrise at the local beach.

So I did… and then I caught the sunrise on the beach every day of my trip. I even kept myself on Boston time the whole time I was here so I wouldn’t miss one.

bucket list tour hawaii

I simply can’t tell you how serene it is watching the sun come up while sitting on the beach, nearly alone, with the cool breeze and the swaying palms. I’m going to lull myself to sleep just writing about it.

Show up a little before sunrise, find a spot in the sand, and just watch the day begin. Chances are there’s already surfers in the water, a handful of joggers and their cute pups, an outrigger team charging into the waves, a rooster or two waking up the rest of the neighborhood, and other visitors like you out there.

37. Hike the Koko Head Railway

Admittedly, this is one of the crazier things on the Oahu bucket list, but one of the most unique and worthwhile! If you’re in decent physical health and with a little bit of a crazy streak, that is.

The Koko Head Railway was built during WWII to transport materials up and down the crater to the military defense installations at the top. When the war ended, the railway and bunkers were simply abandoned.

bucket list tour hawaii

Today, you can hike to the top of Koko Head Crater via what’s known as the “Koko Head Stairs.” These “stairs” are actually the railroad ties from the former railway. At the top, you get amazing 360° views and some desperately-needed air.

There are 1,050 railroad ties (spaced about 3 feet apart, mind you), and the entire hike up and back down takes about 2 hours. But the important thing to know here is that the path is pretty much vertical. Your legs won’t know what hit them. This hike is actually pretty brutal, but awesome.

If you’re looking to add a little bit (lol) of exercise to your Oahu bucket list, this is the #1 activity for you.

Read my full Koko Head Crater hike survival guide here! It’s got everything you could possibly want to know about this crazy hike.

Boston bucket list and the best things to do in Boston: go whale watching

38. Go whale watching

And even if you left your hiking legs back home, hopefully you at least brought your sea legs to your Oahu bucket list. If you’ll be visiting Hawaii between the months of December and April, be sure to book a whale watching excursion while you’re here.

Living in Boston , I go whale watching pretty regularly and it’s always a beautiful experience . Seeing some of the world’s largest creatures up close in the wild is simply jaw-dropping.

Off the coast of Oahu, the most common whales you can see are humpback whales, but you can also see right whales, beluga whales, and even sperm whales. During my last Hawaii snorkeling trip, I actually found myself on the edge of a massive pod of pilot whales (in August).

bucket list tour hawaii

If you’re interested in adding whale watching to your Oahu bucket list, check out these popular excursion options :

  • Waikiki Beach Eco-Friendly Whale Watching Cruise – Spot migrating humpbacks from a double-deck luxury catamaran along the beautiful Waikiki coastline. (That means you also get fantastic views of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head!)
  • Eco-Friendly West Coast Whale Watching Cruise – Sail along the stunning Ko’Olina coastline, snacks and free hotel pickup included.
  • Early Bird Whale Watching Cruise from Waikiki – No-frills, two-hour whale watching trip out of Waikiki.
  • Whale Watching & Late Breakfast Cruise in Honolulu – Have your breakfast on board while you sail to where the humpbacks hang out.
  • See more whale watching options here on Viator and here on Get Your Guide .

39. Visit a local craft brewery

Visiting local craft breweries is something I try to do on every trip, so this Oahu bucket list is no exception. And what better place to sit back and enjoy some good beer in the sunshine? I mean really.

Oahu is full of great craft breweries , so depending on where you are, you’re sure to find something delicious. Here are some places to start:

  • Kona Brewing Co. in Honolulu – Hawaii’s most famous craft brewery has a taproom here in Oahu. In fact, it’s near the base of the Koko Head stairs. (I.e., the best way to end that grueling hike.)
  • Lanikai Brewing in Kailua for great local beers and a fabulous brick oven pizza truck on Fridays.
  • Honolulu Beer Works whose coconut hefeweizen is my new favorite beer!
  • Maui Brewing Co. in Waikiki for a taste of Maui here on Oahu.
  • Hana Koa Brewing in Honolulu for the IPA lovers
  • Inu Island Ales in Kaneohe for something fruity and unique

A beer bike tour around kaka’ako (Honolulu’s vibrant arts and warehouse district) is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

bucket list tour hawaii

40. Go kayaking

Kayaking is one of my favorite ways to get out on the water and Oahu offers so many cool kayaking experiences. You can likely rent a kayak from whatever hotel/resort/beach you’re staying at and simply paddle around the (albeit gorgeous) ocean.

Or you can opt for something different and paddle over to some of the island’s coolest kayaking spots. Like…

  • Kailua Bay and the Mokulua Islands (also known as the Mokes) – includes lunch!
  • The famous islet of Mokolii , also known as the “Chinaman’s Hat”
  • Kaneohe Bay and He’eia State Park to see sea turtles and dolphins

A 3-hour Kayak or standup paddleboard rental is included in the Oahu GoCity pass .

bucket list tour hawaii

You can also trade in a regular ol’ kayak for something really cool , like:

  • this glass bottom kayaking excursion with guaranteed sea turtle sightings
  • or this nighttime light-up kayak experience
  • See many more kayaking adventures here on Viator and here on Get Your Guide .

Keep in mind that most excursions offer either guided or self-guided options. Guided is great to learn about the ocean and wildlife. Self-guided is great when you just want to explore on your own. Many also offer stand-up paddleboard options as well.

bucket list tour hawaii

41. Visit Punchbowl Cemetery

Honolulu, Hawaii is the site of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (commonly known as the Punchbowl Cemetery due to its location inside the Punchbowl Crater).

This huge and beautiful cemetery that overlooks Honolulu opened in 1949 and contains the graves of those who died serving in the United States military. This includes a number of Pearl Harbor victims and WWII veterans, as well as many other notable figures.

Besides the famous burials, there’s a great memorial atop the hill with huge mosaics that detail the events of WWII’s Pacific Theater.

Check out my full guide to the unforgettable WWII sites on Oahu here.

bucket list tour hawaii

42. Explore Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens

You’ll know why the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens are on the Oahu bucket list as soon as you drive in. This beautiful site is located in a lush valley, surrounded by the sky-high Ko’olau mountains. The park is free to visit.

There are nature trails lined with all kinds of interesting tropical trees and flowers, a large lake, lots of wildlife (ahem, mongooses), and tons of green space. But really, just driving from one end of the gardens to the other is the real treat . (Just don’t stop on the road – like the bajillions of signs say but so many jerks completely ignore.)

bucket list tour hawaii

43. Take an Oahu food tour

I’m a huge fan of Hawaiian food, are you? If so, you should definitely consider adding a local food tour to your Oahu bucket list. Food tours are the perfect way to sample tons of local foods, learn about the culture, and, well, get fed.

Check out some of these popular Oahu food tours for your next trip:

  • Hawaii Food Tour – Off the Beaten Path – This 3-hour, small group walking tour “provides insights into Hawaii’s multicultural history and culinary heritage while taking you to some excellent eateries that lie off the tourist trail.” 5 stars. I’m sold.
  • Da Local’s Food Tour – Another 5-star, 3-hour tour that includes all the best stuff like poke, garlic shrimp, and shave ice.
  • Oahu Food Tour by Bike – If you’re looking to burn the calories while you consume them, this super popular tour is for you.

bucket list tour hawaii

44. Go on a submarine scooter adventure

I had no idea what this was either when I asked my Instagram followers what their favorite thing to do in Oahu was. SO MANY people replied that I should go on a submarine scooter adventure . And looking at how many 5-star reviews this activity has, apparently they were right!

You’ll have to look at the pictures in that link above to understand, but it really is like riding a scooter at the bottom of the ocean. You get to be up close with all the fish and sea turtles, but in a totally gnarly way! Seriously, everyone told me it was so much fun .

bucket list tour hawaii

45. Spend some chill time on the beach

And because this is still Hawaii and the beaches here are some of the dreamiest in the world, you should definitely feel free to add some relaxation to your Oahu bucket list too. (But still bring your snorkel gear!)

I’m very much a doer when I travel, but I did carve out some chill beach time after one of my sunrise hikes. And it was absolutely a highlight. The waters here are crystal clear and full of colorful fish and sea turtles galore! The water is warm, the scenery is amazing, and many of the local beaches are beautifully uncrowded.

Visit Waikiki Beach because it’s famous, but definitely spend some time on a lesser-known local beach too for a true Hawaiian experience.

bucket list tour hawaii

I hope I’ve helped plump up your Oahu bucket list and/or introduced you to some new things to do here. Definitely come back and let me know which were your favorites. And if you’d like this bucket list in printable, checklist form, you can get it below for free! Aloha!

Charging elephant kills an American woman on 'bucket list trip' in Zambia

An American woman who was on what she had called her "last big trip" was killed when a charging elephant flipped over the car she was traveling in at a national park in Zambia .

The “aggressive” creature buffeted the vehicle carrying six tourists and a guide, tour operator Wilderness said in a statement Tuesday. It said the 79-year-old victim died after Saturday's incident on a game drive at the Kafue National Park in western Zambia.

The company did not name the victim but Rona Wells, her daughter, identified her as Gail Mattson in a post on Facebook. She said her mother died in a “tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

A video circulating on social media apparently showing the incident shows a large elephant running toward a car, which slows down as the animal approaches its left side. The elephant then flips the vehicle over and the passengers can be heard gasping as the car rolls over.

NBC News does not know the condition or identity of the person who filmed the video.

Photos shared online of the car, which is emblazoned with the logo of the tour operator, show it tipped onto its side after the incident, with a deep dent in two of its side doors.

Wilderness, which describes itself as a “leading conservation and hospitality company” operating in eight African countries, including Zambia, did not respond to NBC News when asked to confirm the authenticity of the video and the photos.

But the tour operator’s CEO, Keith Vincent, said in the statement that the company’s “guides are all extremely well trained and experienced.”

"Sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he added.

Gail Mattson, during a safari in Zambia

Another woman was also injured in the incident and taken to a medical facility in South Africa, the Wilderness statement said, adding that four others were treated for minor injuries.

“It’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate,” Marlon du Toit, a wildlife photographer and safari guide, told the “TODAY” show Thursday. “Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands of guests on safari on a daily basis with no negative consequences.”

The exact cause of Mattson’s death was unclear, but the company said her body would be repatriated to her family in the United States with the support of local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Lusaka.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,” the statement added.

NBC News has reached out to Mattson's family for further comment.

Kafue National Park is Zambia’s largest and oldest national park, according to its website, and spans an area of more than 8,000 square miles. Vast regions of the park remain unexplored and the website says it is home to a variety of untamed wildlife.

A 'bucket list trip'

Mattson spent her winters in Sun City West, Arizona, playing bridge and cards, but during the rest of the year, she "travels all over the world," her friend Brenda Biggs told NBC News. Biggs and her husband, John Longabauth, became friends with Mattson when they moved to the area 6 ½ years ago.

Longabauth said Mattson spoke to the couple about her upcoming safari trip about two weeks ago, and called it "one of her bucket list trips." He said she was very excited for the adventure.

Before she left, she gave the couple concert tickets for a show that would happen while she was traveling, telling them to enjoy the concert and "I'll see you when I get back," Longabauth recalled of the conversation.

Biggs said Mattson, who was almost 80 years old, told her that the African safari was her "my last big trip." She said Mattson was "super excited because it was like the culmination of all the trips that she had gone on."

An avid traveler, Mattson took to trips to Europe and Asia, Longabauth recalled, noting that she might have been to South America, too.

Biggs called her friend "flamboyant," "friendly" and "fabulous" and said she loved bright colors. Mattson had taken over Biggs’ job as the event planner for their 200-member bridge club, she said.

"Gail was one of the more up people you'd ever want to meet," Longabauth said. "She was always up. She was always optimistic. She was always seeing the good side of everybody."
