3. FWD Travel Insurance

FWD travel insurance offers some of the cheapest travel insurance plans in Singapore, so this is a budget-friendly option which still offers you great value for every dollar. I like that coverage for emergency medical evacuation is unlimited for all tiers, and overseas medical expenses go up to a generous $1,000,000 (which is about as high as it gets).

Here’s a quick run-through of the price and benefits offered by FWD travel insurance plans:

When you’re purchasing FWD travel insurance, the COVID-19 benefits are an add-on. The price of the COVID-19 add-on costs between $11 to $22  depending on the part of the world you’re travelling to. If you choose to add it on, it’ll give you comprehensive coverage of the following:

  • Trip disruption
  • Trip cancellation
  • Overseas hospital cash
  • Hospital cash while in Singapore
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

The plan reimburses your travel-related expenses if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 no more than 30 days before your scheduled departure date, or if you have to change your itinerary because of a COVID-19 diagnosis while overseas. You also get to claim medical expenses and a hospital cash benefit if you get hospitalised overseas or for up to 14 days in Singapore upon your return.

On top of that, there’s also an automatic policy extension of up to 21 days should you be prevented from travel as per foreign government regulations due to:

  • You contracting COVID-19; or
  • You or your travel companion needing to be self-isolated due to being in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19

4. Starr Travel Insurance

Starr’s travel insurance   Starr TraveLead Comprehensive is a leader in terms of how customisable their insurance is. When signing up, medical coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) is automatically included in all plans, but you can choose whether or not you want to add trip coverage (e.g. document loss, travel delay) and baggage coverage (e.g. baggage delay). Then, you can also easily add riders for Golf Protection, Cruise Vacation, Scuba Diving, and Snow Sports.

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive comes in 3 tiers: Gold , Silver and Bronze . While all are pretty comprehensive (as the name suggests), we advise you go for at least Silver . This affords you $500,000 overseas medical coverage, as well as $30,000 medical coverage for COVID-19 and $250 coverage for COVID-19 related trip curtailments and cancellations. You won’t get the COVID-19 trip curtailment/cancellation coverage in the Bronze plan, which only offers $15,000 for COVID-19 medical coverage. Better be safe and  go for Silver or Gold.

Here are the prices and coverage amounts for each tier. Prices are given with trip coverage included in the plan.

Note: Starr also has a travel insurance called Starr TraveLead Essential, which also comes in Bronze , Silver and Gold tiers. They look very attractive because of their low prices—for example, Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze costs just $20 for a 7-day trip to an ASEAN destination.

However, unless you’re on a really tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend these plans because of their more limited coverage. For example, while the Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze plan does cover you for $200,000 worth of overseas medical expenses (which is already the bare minimum), it doesn’t cover you at all for trip cancellation and loss/damage of baggage. Neither do the Silver or Gold tier plans.

5. MSIG Travel Insurance

MSIG travel insurance is categorised into 3 plans— Standard , Elite , and Premier . The cheapest, basic plan still offers pretty adequate coverage in medical emergencies and trip cancellations or delays.

Here’s a quick run-down of the plan’s key benefits:

One more unusual area of coverage that MSIG includes is emergency dental expenses. You get $5,000 to $15,000 in coverage, depending on the travel insurance tier you select.

MSIG’s Areas A and B refer, roughly speaking, to ASEAN and Asia respectively. Here’s a more comprehensive list of the countries in each category:

  • Area A : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam
  • Area B : Australia, China (excluding Inner Mongolia and Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and including countries in Area A
  • Area C : Worldwide

MSIG Travel Insurance’s COVID-19 coverage is an automatic inclusion to its travel insurance plans and offers the following coverage:

  • Trip cancellation, postponement, shortening, disruption
  • Replacement of traveller
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Overseas quarantine daily cash allowance

This is quite a decent list of benefits, but do note that daily hospital cash allowance is missing from the list.

6. Singlife Travel Insurance

Singlife travel insurance comes in 3 tiers— Lite , Plus , and Prestige . The price you pay and the coverage you’ll get increase with each plan.

Here are Singlife travel insurance’s key prices and benefits:

On top of the coverage above, Singlife also covers you for chiropractor and/or chinese physician treatment : $250 ($50 per visit) for Lite, $500 ($75 per visit) for Plus, and $1000 ($100 per visit) for Prestige.

As far as COVID-19 coverage goes, here’s a quick run-down:

  • Emergency medical evacuation, repatriation
  • Overseas quarantine allowance
  • Trip cancellation, postponement, interruption

While Singlife travel insurance’s coverage for non-COVID medical expenses, travel delay and trip cancellation is comprehensive, we have to dock some points for the lack of overseas hospital cash allowance and pretty low COVID-19 trip cancellation coverage.

Also, do note that the lowest tier, Lite, doesn’t come with certain coverage, such as trip cancellation or postponement for any reason and COVID-19 overseas quarantine allowance.

7. Etiqa Travel Insurance

Do you hate making travel insurance claims? I do. That’s why when a friend of mine told me that you don’t need to make any claim on Etiqa to receive compensation for your flight delay, I was very intrigued.

I’ve been fortunate—all my recent flights have left on time. But from what I’ve heard from friends who weren’t as lucky on their recent travels, it’s true that Etiqa has the most seamless claim process for flight delays . All you need to do is enter your flight details when purchasing your insurance. Etiqa will monitor your flight and know if your flight is delayed (to count as a delay, it needs to be pushed back at least 3 consecutive hours). If that happens, they’ll transfer money into your Etiqa TiqConnect eWallet—even if you don’t submit a claim! You can then encash that sum via PayNow.

On top of this travel delay claim benefit, Etiqa also provides flight check-in reminders and baggage belt collection details via SMS when you land. I’ve experienced this myself when I bought Etiqa’s travel insurance for my trip to the UK this year. Now that’s what I call service.

Etiqa’s travel insurance is called Tiq Travel Insurance  and comes in 3 tiers: Tiq Entry , Tiq Savvy , and Tiq Luxury . Here are their costs and coverage components:

Tiq Entry is sufficient to give you essential coverage for travel disruptions. But if you’ve just a little more to spend, go for Tiq Savvy . This will more than double your coverage limit for overseas medical expenses from $200,000 to $500,000 for just an additional $5 a week—that’s less than $1 a day.

Covers Cruise to Nowhere

Get paid upon a 3-hour flight delay, even without submitting a claim

Instant claims encashment via PayNow

24-hour worldwide emergency travel support

The only disadvantage to Tiq travel insurance is that COVID-19 coverage is not included in the base price and you’ll have to pay for their optional  COVID-19 Add-On to be covered. Some people might say this is an advantage—it gives you a greater degree of flexibility to decide if you want to have COVID-19 coverage or not, especially as COVID-19 becomes less and less prevalent. However, the fact remains that you need to pay extra for it compared to travel insurance plans where COVID-19 coverage is already included.

Here’s how much the COVID-19 Add-On will cost for a 7-day trip:

To be covered for travel disruptions and medical expenses related to COVID-19, you’ll need to add the costs above to the base Tiq travel insurance prices.

8. Cheapest travel insurance in Singapore

When I buy travel insurance, I don’t really care whether the insurer has 900 years of experience or if the plan comes with extra coverage for Chanel bags. Just give me the cheapest travel insurance plan can  l iao !

If that sounds like you too, you’ll be glad to know we’ve done the legwork for you. After assessing the most popular travel insurers in Singapore, the honour of cheapest travel insurance in Singapore goes to… FWD travel insurance .

FWD Premium

Optional add on coverage available for pre-existing Medical Conditions for Single Trips plans (up to 30 days) with S$50,000 coverage for medical expenses incurred overseas and 50% co-payment for trip cancellation, postponement and more!

But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Will you regret being a cheapskate and lose out on important coverage if the only number you look at is the price?

In a way, yes. Because FWD travel insurance is only the cheapest option with 2 caveats.

Firstly, travel insurers have limited-time discounts all the time. This is no secret. It does, however, make it difficult to compare prices when an expensive plan is on 40% off but a cheaper one is on 10% off. That’s why for the table above, we compared base prices without discounts .

But when you take into account promotional prices, which plan is the cheapest? There’s no need to open a million tabs to compare every travel insurance plan out there. Just use our travel insurance comparison tool with the “Lowest Price” filter  on. You’re welcome!

The second caveat is this: FWD came out the cheapest when we looked at its price  without its COVID-19 add-on. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan that includes coverage for disruptions due to COVID-19 (which you should!), the real winners are  Amex travel insurance and  Starr travel insurance .

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive Bronze

Personalise your travel insurance-Flexible coverage allows you to create a travel insurance plan with different types of coverage and addon that can adapt to your needs

Overseas Covid-19 related medical expenses of up to $15,000 SGD included (Excluding China).

Covers travel expenses for sending back an unattended child during the hospitalisation of the insured person

At the end of the day, ask yourself what specific travel insurance coverage you want to have, and assess the travel insurance options to find one that suits your needs.

Need some help? Read our travel insurance guide to understand all you need to know about choosing the best travel insurance. Don’t forget to use our travel insurance comparison tool to seamlessly compare plans across different providers in Singapore. We also have a comparison tool for travel insurance in Hong Kong !

9. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, most insurers did not extend their coverage to COVID-19-related mishaps. (Read more here .) The pandemic was quickly considered a “known event”, which insurers usually do not offer compensation for. So, if your flight got cancelled because of COVID-19, you’d be out of luck trying to get your insurance claims approved.

Now that practically all travel restrictions are lifted, insurance companies are rushing for a slice of the pie. Since the virus looks like it’s here to stay, most insurers are offering coverage that includes specific benefits for COVID-19. Where COVID-19 benefits aren’t already included in the policy, insurers offer an optional COVID-19 rider you can pay for to add on to the existing regular coverage.

Read your policy documents carefully to see if COVID-19 is covered, and add it on if you need to.

10. How do I choose the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage?

COVID-19 coverage  can vary quite a bit from insurer to insurer . When you’re shopping for the best insurance policy,  there are 4 things you want to look out for when it comes to choosing the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage:

  • Medical expenses coverage

Do note that the plans still exclude travelling against a travel advisory put in place by the Singapore government or by the local authority at your trip destination. Meaning, if your destination country goes on red alert for COVID-19, visitors are highly likely to come into contact with the virus and your insurance is highly likely to reject any COVID-19 claims. So be sure to check announcements on both ends before you depart.

Another common exclusion is failing to take precautions against COVID-19. This is worded kinda vaguely in those lengthy insurance policies, but could include not following any COVID-19 regulations at your destination or on the plane. So make sure you wear your mask whenever it’s required (or even when it’s not, if you want to play extra safe) and don’t attend any illegal raves.

11. What do I do if I get COVID-19 during or after my travels?

First of all, when booking your trip, you should retain all receipts, tickets and itineraries in case your trip has to be cancelled or altered.

At the first sign of a COVID-19 infection or related travel disruption, you should call your insurer and ask for guidance. Many insurers maintain a 24-hour hotline for travel claims. Save that number before you depart Singapore so that you aren’t stuck somewhere without wi-fi or 4G to Google the hotline.

To make a claim , you will usually have to submit your insurer’s form with supporting documents by the deadline mentioned in your contract (usually 30 days). Don’t wait until you’re back in Singapore to check which documents you need.

If you catch COVID-19 while you’re in Singapore , you will likely have to submit the results of a PCR Swab Test or Antigen Rapid Test conducted at a clinic or hospital.

It gets a bit more complicated if you’re overseas . The insurer will likely require documentation from the hospital as well as a doctor’s letter stating that you are unfit to travel and/or recommending treatment.

If you need to be quarantined overseas , you should make sure you have a quarantine order from the government, otherwise you may not be able to claim for quarantine allowance. Remember to ask for this as not all countries automatically issue such documentation.

Starr TraveLead Travel Insurance Review: Premiums and Coverage

singapore travel insurance reviews

  • Budget-friendly
  • Flexible, customisable plans
  • Automatic COVID-19 coverage
  • Unlimited emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
  • No coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Patchy COVID-19 coverage
  • Fewer benefits compared to other policies
  • Poor customer service

Starr’s TraveLead is one of the newer travel insurance plans in Singapore.

Prices are attractive, to say the least. You can also get add-ons and customise your policy for your travelling needs.

Of course, every plan has its downsides. Sometimes, cheap isn’t the best option.

Today, we’ll review the Starr TraveLead Travel Insurance and give our verdict based on:

  • Pricing and coverage
  • How TraveLead compares to other plans in the market
  • Ease of claims
  • Whom Starr TraveLead is best for

Brief Overview of Starr TraveLead

The requirements are easy enough to meet. If you’re applying for yourself as an individual traveller, you’ll just have to be above 18 years old. If you’re under 18 and not travelling with parents or guardians, your parent/guardian needs to apply on your behalf.

COVID-19 Coverage

Starr’s TraveLead insurance plans come with automatic COVID-19 coverage, but it’s spotty in certain aspects:

Notably, TraveLead Bronze doesn’t offer any reimbursement if you end up having to cancel or cut your trip short because of COVID.

TraveLead Bronze is comparable to AXA’s Wanderlust Lite plan, which costs a little more and offers around the same level of COVID-19 coverage. (COVID-related trip cancellations or curtailment also aren’t covered under Wanderlust Lite.)

Even the Gold plan might not be sufficient coverage in this department: a reimbursement of S$1,000 for cancelling your trip might only cover a short getaway.

Note, also, that you won’t get a quarantine allowance with Starr TraveLead. This is important in the event that you’re quarantined in a hotel instead of a hospital – being stuck in a hotel while on your trip puts a real kink in your itinerary.

Pricing & Coverage For TraveLead Plan Types

Single trip prices include only trip coverage. You’ll need to purchase add-ons for baggage cover or activities like golf, scuba diving, snow sports, or cruises.

Annual plan prices, however, come with both trip and baggage coverage already in the base prices.

Southeast Asia: Covers countries such as Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Asia Pacific: Includes all ASEAN countries and Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (excluding Tibet), Fiji, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Japan, N. Korea, S. Korea, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Macau, Maldives, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, E. Timor, and Taiwan, as well as other Pacific nations.

Worldwide: All countries included.

This is where Starr’s flexibility comes in: you can buy add-ons only for activities you’ll be participating in, rather than paying for a more expensive plan that covers everything by default.

As previously mentioned, COVID-19 cover is the tricky part. You’ll need to go for at least the Silver plan if you want cover for possible trip cancellations or curtailment due to the pandemic.

How Do The TraveLead Plans Compare?

Let’s take a look at travel insurance with similar coverage for a 1-week trip within Asia:

For trips within Asia to countries like Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, these three policies are affordably priced.

FWD ranks high on budget-friendliness and is popular amongst travellers for its comprehensive coverage despite the low prices. FWD’s travel insurance covers a variety of adventurous activities such as skiing and scuba diving (as long as you’re not participating as a professional).

HL Assurance is the priciest amongst the three, but it offers one of the highest trip inconvenience coverage. This makes up for its below-average medical coverage. This plan is great for travellers planning to explore new destinations. Other useful benefits include rental car excess, travel agency insolvency, and so on.

Lastly, Starr TraveLead provides users with a balance of affordability and customisation. If you’d rather not pay for activity coverage you won’t need, Starr might be a good fit.

Ease of Claims

Unfortunately, besides the lackluster COVID-19 coverage, Starr also seems to have poor customer service.

The majority of the reviews on the insurance provider are negative, citing things like:

  • The hotline is of no help at all
  • Nobody picks up the phone
  • They don’t seem to respond to emails
  • There are ridiculous waiting times for responses to claims

While the plans may be easy on the budget, having an insurance provider that won’t entertain your calls is as good as not having insurance at all.

Our Verdict

Overall, the biggest selling point for Starr TraveLead is its affordability and flexibility. This plan caters to a wide variety of needs and budgets, allowing users to add or remove coverage with ease.

However, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

The sums insured by Starr are comparatively lower than their competitors in areas such as personal accident and medical expenses. Also, the huge number of complaints about the slow claims process, uncooperative helplines, and poor customer service makes this insurance policy one that you’ll want to steer clear of.

Review: New Singapore Airlines x Allianz travel insurance policy

Aaron Wong

Singapore Airlines' travel insurance is now provided by Allianz, and it's every bit an improvement over the previous AIG policy.

Singapore Airlines passengers have the option to purchase an exclusive travel insurance policy that provides coverage for overseas medical expenses (including COVID-19), accidents and travel inconveniences.

This was previously called Travel Insurance by Travel Guard (underwritten by AIG). Singapore Airlines has now replaced this with a new policy called Travel Protect by Singapore Airlines (underwritten by Allianz).

Coverage is available to Singapore Airlines passengers who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore, or Singapore Pass Holders and/or Work Permit Holders and their dependents residing in Singapore. Journeys must commence in Singapore.

I’ve gone through the new Allianz policy, and the good news is it’s a significant improvement from the previous AIG one- not only does it offer more coverage, it’s also cheaper to boot.

Allianz Travel Coverage

singapore travel insurance reviews

Travel Protect by Singapore Airlines (which for convenience I’ll just refer to as the “Allianz policy” from hereon) provides up to S$1 million of overseas medical coverage and S$500,000 of emergency medical evacuation coverage (both including COVID-19).

The policy is available regardless of whether you bought your ticket with cash or redeemed miles. Coverage can be added either at the time of booking your itinerary, or subsequently via the Manage Booking function.

singapore travel insurance reviews

If you don’t see the option to add insurance, you’ll need to contact customer service at [email protected] or call +65 6245 4059 (Mon-Fri 0930 to 1730 SGT).

Under the Allianz policy wording , you’ll notice two columns: Comprehensive , and KrisFlyer Comprehensive.

singapore travel insurance reviews

Simply put, if you’re a KrisFlyer member (of any tier) during the period of insurance, you’ll enjoy KrisFlyer Comprehensive coverage. This provides additional coverage for medical expenses, rental car excess, loss of personal documents and more, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t qualify for this.

Comparison: Allianz vs AIG

Here’s a summary of how the new Allianz policy measures up to the previous AIG policy. Do note the following:

  • I’ve used Allianz KrisFlyer Comprehensive as the basis of comparison since it costs nothing to join KrisFlyer
  • AIG’s values have a range because coverage depends on where you’re travelling to. AIG splits the world into three zones: ASEAN, Asia and International. ASEAN has the lowest coverage, while International has the highest
  • AIG also has some supplementary coverage for KrisFlyer members, so I’ve included it where relevant

There’s a lot of information in the table above, but what should immediately jump out is that Allianz not only offers more coverage in most areas, it’s also cheaper than AIG (unfortunately I don’t have historical AIG quotes for travel within Asia/ASEAN, so I can’t make that comparison).

Let’s look at some of the finer details below.

COVID-19 medical expenses & emergency medical evacuation

AIG’s policy covers up to S$350,000 of COVID-19 medical expenses, but Allianz covers up to S$1 million.

More importantly, under the AIG policy both COVID-19 medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation share the same cap  (i.e. the maximum you can claim for COVID-19 medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation is S$350,000).

With Allianz, there is a separate cap for COVID-19 emergency medical evacuation of S$500,000.

Chances are, if your situation is bad enough to warrant medical evacuation to Singapore, you’ve already racked up a sizeable overseas medical bill. You’ll want to ensure there’s enough left over to cover the repatriation.

Quarantine allowance

If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 overseas and are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, most countries won’t admit you to hospital. Instead, you’ll be issued with a quarantine order, which you’ll serve out in a hotel.

AIG provides a quarantine allowance that varies depending on country (max. 14 consecutive days):

  • ASEAN: S$50 per day
  • Asia: S$100 per day
  • International: S$200 per day

Allianz doesn’t mention a quarantine allowance, but you can make a claim under the trip interruption section for:

Such coverage applies when :

tl;dr: if you get a quarantine order due to COVID-19, you can claim up to S$150 per day for 14 days.

AIG would be more generous for travel outside of Asia and ASEAN, but otherwise Allianz is the superior option.

One-way trips

Given award space constraints, it’s not uncommon for miles collectors to book separate one-way tickets, even if their intention is to fly a round-trip.

While both policies cover one-way trips, AIG was much stricter in its wording. Cover for a one-way trip was limited to certain sections of the policy, commenced 3 hours before leaving Singapore, and ceased at the earlier of:

  • the expiry of the period specified in the insurance; or
  • your arrival at your first overseas destination

That made it highly impractical on its own. Most customers ended up having to write in to AIG and present 2x one-way tickets, in order to get quoted insurance on a round-trip basis.

Allianz is much kinder with its treatment of one-way trips.

If your policy was purchased with a one-way booking, your coverage end date will be the  scheduled return date for your trip, as shown on your travel documents (not exceeding 30 days from the departure date shown on your travel documents). Additionally, your policy will end on the earliest of:

1.  At 23:59 on the day you cancel your policy; or 2. At 23:59 on the day you file a trip cancellation claim with us; 3. At 23:59 on the day you end your trip, if you end your trip early; 4. At 23:59 on the day you arrive at a medical facility for further care if you end your trip due to a medical reason; or 5. At 23:59 on the 180th day of the trip

Trip cancellation

In terms of trip cancellation, AIG covers a pre-departure COVID-19 diagnosis, plus the usual reasons like death or serious sickness, witness summons, and natural disasters affecting your destination.

However, Allianz provides a much wider range of covered reasons (16 in total), including a COVID-19 diagnosis, a traffic accident on departure date, getting laid off from work, securing a new job, or having your travel documents stolen.

However, note that neither policy covers trip cancellation resulting from border closures or additional quarantine requirements (so they wouldn’t cover the current situation with Italy , for example).

Coverage of airline miles

singapore travel insurance reviews

Speaking of trip cancellation, AIG’s policy explicitly states that it will not cover the loss of air miles used to pay for the trip.

On the other hand, Allianz’s policy is silent about this subject; the only line I can find that refers to air miles is this:

I take it to mean they  will  cover such claims, insofar as they relate to the redeposit of airline miles.

Here’s the thing though. There are only two scenarios where you could lose your KrisFlyer miles due to a cancelled trip:

  • You booked a Spontaneous Escapes award , which is strictly non-refundable
  • Your airline miles have already expired at the time of refund (remember: miles validity is different from ticket validity; if this concept confuses you, read this article )

(1) isn’t an issue right now, because Singapore Airlines has suspended Spontaneous Escapes. With regards to (2), Singapore Airlines has granted extensions to all KrisFlyer miles so the earliest any will expire is April 2022.

In all other situations, you can pay a penalty fee to recover the miles used for your booking, as shown below.

Even if you miss your flight (i.e. no show), the miles are still recoverable. For example, if you made a Business Saver reservation and missed your flight, you’d pay a US$300 no show fee, plus a US$75 fee to change your dates.

Therefore it might not be all that important for travel insurance to cover miles at this juncture, since there’s no Spontaneous Escapes nor expiry.

Unless I’m missing something, Singapore Airlines’ new Allianz travel insurance policy looks to be every bit an improvement over the previous AIG one. Travellers enjoy more generous coverage for a lower fee, and this will more than satisfy the requirements for countries with mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance requirements (e.g. South Korea, Thailand).

Anything else you spotted in the policies worth flagging?

The definition of quarantine in this Allianz policy is so much more reasonable than some other insurers like Chubb. Allianz covers hotel. Chubb covers only government-appointed facilities which is useless in most of the destinations.

bluepanda

This Allianz insurance is new, so its actuarial computations are updated with the most recent data and environment (including where to quarantine). Others were launched earlier using older sets of assumptions and data. They can’t just change coverage anyhow. It’s unfortunate but there is a certain due process.

Hopefully they can change soon. I really liked using Chubb before the pandemic.

Aaron Wong

Hi Freddy, Chubb had previously shared that their TravellerShield Plus policy will provide cover for quarantine in hotels (under the Overseas Quarantine Benefit due to Covid-19), if all the conditions below are fulfilled: 1.     The traveller is diagnosed with Covid-19 2.     The overseas destination has no designated quarantine facility for Covid-19 patients 3.     The authorities of the overseas destination requires the traveller to be quarantined in a hotel

Hi Aaron. Thanks for following up on this! Do you know where I can find this in Chubb’s website or somewhere? I can’t find it in the policy wording, at least for the one with DBS. If I buy their insurance and make the claim, I can’t say “Aaron Wong from Milelion told me this”…=)

It’s an official reply from a DBS spokesperson quoting a Chubb spokesperson. but yeah I understand the problem, I will ask if they can put it in black and white on the website.

James Quek

Possible to overcome the IT constraint of Thailand Pass for this insurance?

chk

Thanks Aaron. Good news for travellers!

So I guess the SIA complimentary travel insurance for PPS members has also been shifted from AIG to Allianz and will their policy conditions for this complimentary insurance be the same as mentioned above?

Lifshitz

There is complimentary travel insurance for PPS? Oddly enough Google doesn’t seem to know that

I was initially not aware either, until SIA Netherlands informed me of that fact. I broke my wrist in 2019 while overseas. AIG complimentary travel insurance which is only applicable to PPS members if you fly on SIA covered all expenses incl quite a generous sum after my return to Singapore.

Jem

Hi Gaby, are you able to provide any link/reference to this policy which covers PPS members for any trips done on SIA flights?

It’s on the SIA PPS portal. It mentions coverage for Overseas Medical and Travel accident insurance. ” provided by AIG. You are covered for accidents and medical emergencies that happen whenever you are in another country”. Then it mentions worldwide emergency assistance underwritten by AXA assistance. Unfortunately can’t attach screenshots.

I just found out that this complimentary AIG travel insurance is only extended to Solitaire members and it is still underwritten by AIG.

K Debay

The other noteworthy difference is Allianz treats all Epidemics and Pandemics the same (not just covid 19) so whether you are infected with Covid, Ebola or a new Epidemic you receive the same coverage. Most insurers have only extended specific to Covid

cheesecake

I’m personally glad that SQ ditched AIG. Previously I had two one-way trips, called up AIG, they said I had to call SQ to “link” the two bookings first, then call AIG back to get their policy because it has to be tagged to only ONE booking reference. I said no, AIG should have a process to cater to two one-ways and not trouble the passenger to make multiple calls between AIG and SQ. Only then they said they can raise internally for an “exception approval” process. Plus their premium was 3X higher than the other insurer I eventually went …  Read more »

One think to point out is SIA-Allianz quarantine allowance (under Trip Interruption) terms are more favourable to the traveler as it provides $150 allowance per day up to 14 days. Whereas the public highest tier platinum policy only provides $500 per day up to 5 days. This is a downer for anyone purchasing the public policy, unless you are certain you can be discharged within 5 days; but there is supposedly the 14 day ICA health declaration issue to contend with (but that’s another matter altogether). Allianz public policy wording Additional accommodation and transportation expenses if the interruption causes you …  Read more »

SJT

hey thanks bent, this is useful info! I did not know I could claim the remaining 9 days accomodation under Travel Delay of $1500,SJ albeit very low coverage under the public Allianz policy.

A A

I wonder if Allianz covers Flights in between the journey that are purchased separately (eg. Domestic flights / intra schengen flights). AIG does not cover that and it makes it difficult to justify if we arrange a big trip and it is impossible to combine the flight itinerary with SIA / * Alliance.

Achen

In today’s context, this does not seem to cover accommodation for a case where you cannot return to SG due to testing positive, and where the foreign country does not require you to go into isolation/quarantine.

robs

Hi Aaron, I spoke to Allianz CSO and found a slight error regarding the article’s paragraph on Allianz’s coverage for one way ticket coverage. The policy will only cover 30 days from the departure date (of the first ticket), not up to 180 days. So for example, if my one way ticket to USA is on 1 March, the coverage ends on 1 April. This applies even if my holiday is longer than 30 days or if my hospitalization or quarantine stay is beyond 1 April. This is a significant risk that travellers must be aware of when purchasing via …  Read more »

Here’s what the policy says: If your policy was purchased with a one-way booking, your coverage end date will be the scheduled return date for your trip, as shown on your travel documents (not exceeding 30 days from the departure date shown on your travel documents). Additionally, your policy will end on the earliest of: 1. At 23:59 on the day you cancel your policy; or 2. At 23:59 on the day you file a trip cancellation claim with us; 3. At 23:59 on the day you end your trip, if you end your trip early; 4. At 23:59 on …  Read more »

Thank you Aaron for adding the whole excerpt!

From the way I interpret it, the 30 days limit is an additional limitation for one way ticket trips on top of point 1 to 5. So for my earlier example of 1st March, if I have another one way ticket back to Singapore on 15 April, my trip portion for April 2nd onward would not be covered by the allianz policy bought via sq booking website.

I read elsewhere that Bali does not require mandatory travel insurance – can you clarify or correct that please?

What’s the point of buying travel insurance

As a loyal customer who has repeatedly invested in FWD's travel insurance, I expected better treatment. During a recent business trip abroad, my laptop screen suffered damage, prompting me to file a claim through FWD's portal. However, their response was insulting—a mere $50 payout, while the repair cost from Apple totaled $1,000. This meager compensation leaves me utterly frustrated. I had anticipated at least some assistance, considering my longstanding relationship with FWD. Their justification based on my laptop's age, exceeding 36 months, only adds insult to injury. It's disheartening to discover the true extent of their service limitations under these circumstances.

EFFICIENT HANDLING OF REFUND

I was pleasantly surprised that FWD would entertain my request for a pro-rated refund of my Home Insurance policy as the sum was rather small, and efficiently and promptly at that. The officer in charge of my matter, Irish Go, was quick to respond concerning the refund from the termination of my Home insurance policy, as the refund cheque was sent to my former address. Irish efficiently arranged for stop cheque and arranged to PayNow the refund to me. I am very impressed with her quick response and efficient handling on the matter, and the professionalism in customer service. Would be happy to take insurance from FWD again. SAMANTHA was so quick to respond (within an hour of my email) concerning the refund from the termination of my Home insurance policy. The refund cheque would have been sent to my former address, but with her efficient handling she offered to either re-direct the cheque to my new address or make a refund via PayNow instead. I’m so impress with her quick response and efficient handling on the matter, and the professionalism in customer service. I’m glad to have taken a new Home insurance policy for my new home with FWD.

  • Great Eastern Travel Insurance: Is It a Good Deal?

Great Eastern

  • TravelSmart Premier Basic is competitively priced for single trips
  • Offers adventurous leisure activities and golf coverage
  • Basic plan is only available for Malaysia
  • Elite plan is expensive for ASEAN travellers but offers below average medical coverage

Great Eastern’s TravelSmart Premier stands out for offering affordable basic-tier travel insurance plans, both single and annual, to Malaysia. At just S$26 for a 1-week trip and S$261 for an annual insurance plan, the cost for the TravelSmart Premier Basic plan is below the industry average.

However, the basic-tier plan is a no-frills plan which does not have COVID-19 and Adventurous Leisure Activities coverage, and customers looking for more coverage would have to go for higher-end plans.

Great Eastern Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

Great Eastern's travel insurance may disappoint those who are looking for cheap or high-value plans due to its mostly uncompetitive premiums and limited COVID-19 coverage. Depending on the destination and level of coverage you need, you can choose from the TravelSmart Premier Basic, Classic or Elite plan.

The TravelSmart Premier Basic plan offers basic medical, terrorism, trip inconvenience and golf coverage. However, the basic-tier plan can be purchased for Malaysia only and does not include COVID-19 coverage. Those looking to purchase travel insurance to other countries must select either the Classic or Elite plans, both of which cost considerably above average.

Additionally, though Great Eastern offers adventure leisure activities cover, they are only available for the Classic or Elite plan.

Even with these additional benefits, it is difficult to recommend Great Eastern's travel insurance to the average consumer who wants to maximise value.

Great Eastern TravelSmart Premier Basic

The Great Eastern TravelSmart Premier Basic plan has the potential of standing out by being the only Malaysia/Batam/Bintan plan that is available for annual coverage.

However, in exchange for the low premium, there is no COVID-19 coverage or Adventurous Leisure Activities coverage.

In addition, the Great Eastern Travel Premier Basic plan is only available for Malaysia and users have to select between Classic and Elite plans for other destinations.

Great Eastern's TravelSmart Premier Classic plan is quite expensive for the coverage it provides, giving consumers a low value plan and leaving those who either want top coverage or great prices unimpressed.

Although it includes adventurous leisure activities coverage—which may seem like a great deal at first because most other plans charge extra for these benefits—other mid-tier plans still end up being cheaper even with the extra cost to add on these sports coverages.

The Classic Plan's medical and personal accident coverage is also below average and its cancellation, trip delays, baggage loss and baggage delay coverage hover around the mid-tier average.

Great Eastern's Elite plan is similar to the Classic plan in terms of who it would—or wouldn't—attract.

For ASEAN travellers, it is one the most expensive options costing 15% above average. For trips to Asia and Global destinations, its prices are around average. However, the Elite Plan's medical coverage is around half of what most top-tier plans offer. Additionally, just like the classic plan, it also includes adventurous leisure activities and golf cover, terrorism cover and home contents cover.

If you are looking for a top-tier plan because you want the best coverage possible for your trip, then we would recommend Allianz, as they have extremely high medical and travel inconvenience coverage, and include all of the extra benefits Great Eastern includes such as sports, golf, jewellery and home contents coverage.

Notable Exclusions

Great Eastern has the standard exclusions for TravelSmart Premier plans, including no cover for events relating to pre-existing conditions, war, mental disorders and pregnancy.

Great Eastern offers fairly comprehensive golfer's coverage that includes equipment, unused green fees and hole-in-one. You will additionally be covered for medical and accident expenses occurring from leisure adventurous activity if you buy either the Classic or Elite plans. The sports covered include helicopter rides, jet skiing, mountaineering (below 3,000 metres), paragliding, parasailing, skiing/snowboarding, skydiving and underwater activities up to a depth of 30 metres.

To submit a claim with Great Eastern, you can either contact their emergency services number (in case of an emergency while on your trip), contact your insurance adviser or mail a claim form along with the appropriate documents.

Great Eastern Travel Insurance Details

When you get a great deal on your travel insurance, you'll end up maximising your peace of mind while not breaking the bank. Below, you'll find a summary of Great Eastern's coverage and premiums, as well as how they compare to the industry averages. Whether you need an annual plan or a policy for a last-minute trip, travel guard can deliver..

thumbnail

Travel Guard is one of CNBC Select 's picks for best travel insurance , thanks to its wide range of customizable policies. But are any of them right for you? Below, we review the provider and its offers and how they compare to the competition to help you choose the right travel insurance for your next trip.

Travel Guard review

Other insurance offered, how it compares, bottom line, travel guard® travel insurance.

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Policy highlights

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans to suit travel ranging from road trips to long cruises. For air travelers, Travel Guard can help assist with tracking baggage or covering lost or delayed baggage.

24/7 assistance available

  • A variety of plans are available to help cover different types of trips
  • Not all products are available for purchase online

Travel Guard® is a global travel insurance provider specializing in plans for leisure and business travelers. Its online travel insurance packages include five options, from basic and last-minute trip coverage to more comprehensive plans. This allows travelers to pick a plan that best matches their situation.

For example, budget-minded travelers might go for the Essential Plan which offers basic protections, such as trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance, coverage for lost, damaged and delayed baggage, and medical, evacuation and death coverage.

On the other hand, the Deluxe Plan — the most comprehensive option — adds such extras as missed connection coverage, security evacuation, travel inconvenience benefits and more. It also boosts high limits for essential coverages.

Last-minute travelers can opt for the Pack N' Go Plan which only includes certain post-departure coverages. Or, if you travel often, the Annual Plan can cover your trips throughout the year.

Finally, Travel Guard offers "offline" travel insurance packages, meaning you'll have to call if you're looking for a specialty plan.

Coverage types

Depending on the plan, here are the types of protection Travel Guard can include in your package:

  • Trip cancellations
  • Trip interruption
  • Baggage coverage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel medical expenses
  • Travel inconvenience benefits (reimbursement for such situations as runway delays, cruise diversion and other unforeseen situations)
  • Medical evacuation
  • Trip Saver (reimbursement for meals, hotels and transportation if you need to begin your trip sooner due to weather or airline changes)
  • Trip exchange (reimbursement in case you have to cancel your trip and book a new one due to covered unforeseen circumstances)
  • Security evacuation (due to a riot or civil disorder)
  • Flight guard (coverage for accidental death or dismemberment that occurs when traveling by plane)
  • Pre-existing medical conditions exclusion waiver

You can also customize your plan with add-ons, such as car rental insurance and "cancel for any reason" coverage .

Travel Guard landed on our list of the best travel insurance companies thanks to its variety of coverage. With plenty of options to choose from, both online and offline, it's easy to build a policy that meets your needs.

Travel Guard also features 24-hour concierge services that you can use to book a new flight in case of an emergency or delay.

The provider's website also offers informational resources — here, you can check travel news, read safety tips and find general travel advice. Additionally, the website lets you modify your plan, file a claim and check its status, or apply for a voucher or refund.

As of writing, Travel Guard doesn't offer any discounts. That's common for travel insurance — you're more likely to find deals when shopping for other types of insurance, such as home and auto insurance .

Travel Guard is a portfolio of travel insurance and travel-related services offered by AIG Travel, a member of American International Group (AIG). AIG also offers life insurance and a variety of business insurance products.

Travel Guard makes it easy to get a travel insurance policy customized to your needs. But before you purchase coverage, it's always a good idea to shop around.

For example, if you're going on a cruise, you might want to look at Nationwide Travel Insurance . The provider advertises cruise-specific insurance with three plan options available. This type of coverage is designed with issues unique to cruises in mind — from ship-based breakdowns to missed pre-pard excursions.

If you're planning a more active trip filled with rock climbing or sky diving, Berkshire Hathaway offers the AdrenalineCare® plan which features coverage for unforeseen costs that result from participating in extreme sports on your trip, as well as reimbursement for sporting equipment delay. Pre-existing conditions are covered under this plan (if you meet qualifying conditions).

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has multiple plans to cover vacations from luxury travel to adventure travel. The brand's LuxuryCare offers the highest limits of travel insurance coverage offered by the company. Quotes and policies are available online.

As you can see, offerings vary by provider. It can be helpful to compare multiple companies and the plans they offer to find what works best for you. It's even better if you gather several quotes to ensure you're getting a good price for your policy.

Money matters — so make the most of it. Get expert tips, strategies, news and everything else you need to maximize your money, right to your inbox.  Sign up here .

Travel Guard offers plenty of ways to customize your policy, making it a solid choice for travel insurance. You can also access additional options by giving Travel Guard a call. However, make sure to check out other travel insurance companies too — comparison shopping is essential when picking any type of financial product.

Tick Travel Insurance Top Cover Review: Features, Pros And Cons

Published: Apr 24, 2024, 1:46am

When comparing Tick Travel Insurance’s pricing against cover levels in key areas, such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation, it is safe to argue that it’s a highly competitive player in the market. Travellers will likely appreciate the unlimited medical and $20,000 of cancellation cover available. Plus, the 24-hour medical emergency assistance line may offer added peace of mind.

However, some travellers may feel that Tick Travel Insurance’s Top Policy falls a little short on nice-to-have coverage, including lost luggage and rental car excess limits. Let’s take a closer look at Tick’s top policy offering.

  • Competitive pricing
  • High levels of medical and cancellation cover
  • High customer service rating
  • Credit card fraud not covered
  • Higher levels of luggage cover elsewhere
  • Missed connections not covered

Tick Travel Insurance is owned by Europ Assistance which is a part of the global Generali Group, and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

Generali is a large global insurance and asset management provider, while Europ Assistance says it has a presence in over 200 countries, providing comfort and empathy to customers in emergency situations, and an immediate global response.

Tick Travel Insurance’s aim is to make travel insurance simple, covering travellers up to age 100. It offers three levels of domestic travel insurance: Basic, Standard and Top and four types of international travel insurance: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top.

This review will focus on the most comprehensive offering for international travel, being the Tick Travel Insurance Top plan.

Tick Travel Insurance provides domestic and international cover, offering policies for single trips and annual cover for multiple trips in a year. The provider covers adults up to the age of 100, while dependent children, up to 18-years-old at time of purchase, are insured for free on an adult’s policy.

As is typical of travel insurance, its policies cover trip cancellation or curtailment and journey resumption, due to unforeseen circumstances such as injury or illness, as standard. Cover for travel delay is available on the top policies, with a pay out of $100 per completed hour up to $1,000. Valid reasons for claiming include bad weather, a vehicle breakdown or strike, and experiencing a delay of more than 12 hours.

Tick Travel Insurance’s Top plan also includes the following standard benefits that form a part of most comprehensive travel insurance policies:

Lost Luggage

This insurer covers the cost of repairing or replacing your lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings up to $7,500. Take note of the $3,000 sublimit— individual limit— on how much you can claim for devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, video cameras and cameras.

Tick Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical cover, which includes cover for ambulance and emergency surgery, repatriation if necessary, and the death of you, or another person insured on the policy.

While the insurer can cover pre-existing conditions (medical conditions you had before taking out the policy), whether you will be eligible for this cover will depend on the details you provide, outlining the condition and its severity, in the medical screening section of the application.

Is Dental Cover Included?

This insurer also extends its cover to dental treatment, paying out up to $500. This is half of what many providers offer, and bear in mind that you can only claim for dental cover for situations where you need immediate pain relief.

Yes, protection against risks in relation to Covid-19 are covered by Tick Travel Insurance’s Top policy. The insurer accepts related cancellation and disruption claims, as well as medical claims for trips outside of Australia.

What About Pregnancy?

You can claim for an extensive range of pregnancy or childbirth complications up to 31 weeks into your pregnancy with this insurer. These include toxaemia, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

What About Sports And Activities?

From abseiling, to jet skiing and motorcycling, insurance for 90 sports and activities is included automatically with Tick Travel Insurance.

Remember to look out for conditions for claiming. For instance, you will only be covered for three bungee jumps and can only kayak in grades 1 and 2 rapids or lower. Also, some activities may require safety gear that you will need to wear to make a valid claim.

Cover for personal liability and accidental injury only apply to certain activities, as specified in the PDS.

Compared to the competition, Tick Travel Insurance offers relatively decent to high levels of cover across the board for a super competitive price.

When comparing the price of its most comprehensive policy against those of Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz—two providers we rated highly for their comprehensive offering—it comes out on top.

The data below is based on a 28-year-old who needs insurance for Indonesia for seven days.

The above table shows how important it is to shop around for travel insurance, and weigh up your needs with your budget when comparing policies. Tick’s Travel Insurance’s Top policy is only $77, offers considerably more cancellation cover than its competitors for this price, and levies less in excess—the set portion of each claim you must pay.

However, it may not be suitable for those who need higher levels of cover in other areas such as lost luggage and rental car excess. You can find out exactly what a policy includes and excludes in its PDS, which is usually published on the insurer’s website.

You can also find out more about the comprehensive travel insurance providers Forbes Advisor Australia has independently rated the best.

Customers award Tick Travel Insurance a high score of 4 out of 5 stars across 2832 reviews on ProductReview, Australia’s leading consumer opinion site.

Satisfied customers were pleased with how simple they found the process of taking out insurance, and the price of their policy.

However, disgruntled customer complaints were varied. Some speak of technical difficulties with the provider taking payment and not offering a refund instead, trouble accessing their policy documents and rejected claims.

Tick Travel Insurance may be considered most suitable for those looking for reasonable to high levels of cover in key areas, for a competitive price. This includes unlimited medical cover and $20,000 for trip cancellation. In other areas cover levels are decent, but may not be suitable for all. Those taking away belongings worth over $7,500 or needing more than $4,000 in rental car excess may want to look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) details what it covers, any exclusions and limitations or sublimits. It’s crucial that travellers read through this document before deciding whether to purchase the policy.

How good is Tick travel insurance?

We have awarded Tick Travel Insurance 3.7 out of 5 stars based on factors such as the unlimited amount of medical cover, and high level of cancellation cover, it provides. It also scores highly on customer review site productreview.com.au.

However, customers should note it does not cover you, if you fall victim to credit card fraud while away. Neither are you able to choose the amount of cancellation cover you need as with some other insurers. This may not be of concern, considering $20,000 for cancellation is automatically provided, which is a considerable amount, and Tick Travel Insurance policies are competitively priced.
