An Enchanted Time at Water Safari – Old Forge’s Awesome Water Park

Last updated on August 11, 2021.

It’s no secret that the Adirondacks is one of my absolute favorite places on this planet. If you’ve been following along on Instagram , you’ll see it’s been full of mountain views lately! Every summer growing up my parents would take my brother and I camping up at Old Forge. Some of our favorite childhood memories were made in days at Enchanted Forest Water Safari exploring the storybook area with our best friends. In the evenings we’d return to our campsite to watch out for bears (no joke). Water Safari is not only the biggest water park in New York state, but it’s rated one of the best in the country . It’s also one of TripAdvisor’s top choices! Intrigued? I bet you are. Find out what makes Water Safari in Old Forge one of the best summer destinations.

Me at Enchanted Forest

This article was originally published in 2019. In 2021, Enchanted Forest Water Safari invited me to come back to check out the new water slides and update the article. Thanks, Water Safari!

How to Save Money at Water Safari in Old Forge

Purchase your ticket at a local business.

By buying your ticket ahead of time, you’ll be able to save over $7 off your admission! You can find pre-sale tickets at local grocery stores like Price Chopper and Wegmans.

Get more than a day’s visit with the Siesta Pass

If you arrive at the park after 3pm (or 2pm on the days they close earlier), you can pay admission for the remainder of the day and get a FREE pass to return again the next day . Best. News. Ever. My recommendation? Arrive after that cut-off and enjoy all of the dry rides. Then, return in the morning to spend the day by the pools sunbathing and getting soaked on the wet rides! No worrying about changing your clothes or having enough time to fit it all in.

Book a Stay ‘N Play Package

The Water Safari Resort has two accommodations available. If you’re looking to spend a few days in Old Forge (which I highly recommend), check out their Stay ‘N Play Packages . Guests who stay at either of the properties receive discount tickets to the park.

First up is the Water’s Edge Inn across the street from the park. Guests receive free continental breakfast, have access to an indoor pool and sauna, and can relax on the lakefront property in the evening. Plus, you can actually walk across the street to the park – it’s super convenient!

A little down the road you’ll find Old Forge KOA , where I always camped as a kid. There are a variety of tent sites, cabins, and cottages to choose from depending on your style. The resort also offers a shuttle bus to take you to and from the park, so you don’t need to worry about parking.

Enchanted Forest Water Safari

Join the Paul Bunyan Club

While you’re at it, make sure to take your photo with Paul Bunyan. Yes, it may be cheesy. Yes, a group of us 30-somethings looked like a giddy bunch of children getting our photos taken. But I don’t regret it for one minute! As soon as you enter the park you’ll see the giant statue of Paul Bunyan, and it is the must-have photo opportunity of the park.

For an extra $4 with your first visit this year, you can join the Paul Bunyan Club . As a member, you’ll receive half-off your admission for the rest of the season. Half-price tickets must be purchased at the admission gate.

Get a season pass

If you plan on visiting on at least 3 different days during the summer, it’s worth it to get yourself a season pass. That will get you unlimited admission for the season and 10% off food and drinks in the park.

What Is There to Do at Water Safari in Old Forge?

Before you do anything at the park, get yourself a splash card . These new cards act like your cash inside the park, so you don’t have to worry about carrying around actual cash or a wallet. Plus, the cards are waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about them on the wet rides.

Second, if you want to take photos and videos on the water rides, grab a waterproof phone pouch from any of the gift shops in the park. They seriously work wonders!

Lastly, if you brought a bunch of stuff into the park with you – and chances are you’ve got at least a bag with a change of clothes and towels – get a locker. That way you can stash your stuff in a locker and go enjoy the rides.

The Dry Rides

My favorite? The classic Skyride – take the ride up and get relaxing views of the whole park! But you’ll also find the traditional ones like the bumper cars and tilt-o-whirl. The wet rides are what really shine! (Also why the siesta pass is a great option!)

The Wet Rides

This is where Water Safari does it best! Believe it or not, there are 33 heated water wides ! The most popular is definitely “Curse of the Silverback”, a group ride where your tube circles around a giant funnel like a toilet bowl. And then – drop! For a relaxing day, you can choose from two different lazy rivers – the “Log Jammer” and “Safari River Expeditions”. Plus, there’s everything in between! Races, wave pools, single riders, partner and group tubes… Enough to fill your whole day!

While the park was closed in 2020, they built three new water rides . The lines may be long, but they are definitely worth it.

  • Serengeti Stampede replaced the old, basic racing slide. The new, colorful slides have bumps and turns to make them a lot more fun. And the new mats have handles, making them easier to hold onto.
  • Mamba Strike is a 285-foot drop water slide that loops around the Serengeti Stampede tubes. This slide has guests stand on a platform at the top of the slide that is dropped beneath them. An adrenaline rush for sure!
  • Killermanjaro is back and better than ever. The speed slide features one long 207-foot drop.

Relive your childhood with Storybook Lane

Another one of my favorite childhood memories is visiting all the nursery rhyme recreations! And you can bet that I did that again on my most recent visit. From Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage to Hansel & Gretel’s gingerbread house, they are over 20 stories recreated along a path through the woods in the park. Meant for the children to visit in awe, but reminiscent for the adults as you listen to the stories play.

Friends at Water Safari

Family Circus

Twice daily you can watch the circus show. From the standard jugglers and trapeze artists, you’ll also find more unique acts like performing dogs and the famous motorcycle cage rider. It’s a great chance to catch a break from all the adrenaline of the day. Grab a snack and find a seat while you enjoy the show.

Play with the animals

Are you an animal lover like me? Then check out Paul’s Barnyard to play with and feed the sheep, goats, pigs, and birds that are there. I recommend going in between some of the dry rides!

Water Safari Circus

Where to Eat at Water Safari

Water Safari is one of the most lenient places when it comes to bringing in outside food and beverages. BUT, why worry about lugging around your cooler and finding a place to store it while you’re in the water? There are plenty of restaurants and snack stands throughout the park. So there are plenty of options to please any palate.

Options include pizza, nachos, burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and more. A staff favorite is the Bosco sticks at the pizza shack. Get two cheese-filled breadsticks served with marinara for just $3. New this year, you’ll find ice cream nachos, monster milkshakes, and hot honey chicken sandwiches.

And to answer your most burning question – yes, there are alcoholic drinks for adults!

Water Safari Restaurants

Other Things to Do in Old Forge

While you’re visiting Old Forge, be sure to get the most out of your stay.

Calypso’s Cove

Enchanted Forest Water Safari claims it’s “Where the fun never stops!” And that’s true! Even outside the park, you can continue your adventure – next door at Calypso’s Cove . From mini golf and batting cages, to an arcade, go karts, and more, you’re sure to have a blast.

Slicker’s Restaurant

After a long day at the water park, you’re sure to be hungry! Luckily, there’s a hometown favorite restaurant across the street – Slickers. Their pizza and chicken wings are fantastic. Seriously. So. Darn. Good. Get yourself some garlic parm wings and you’ll be in heaven.

Slickers Restaurant

Adirondack Dog House

If you’re really pinching your pennies for this trip, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Adirondack Dog House . Hot dogs with all sorts of toppings, french fries and onion rings? Delicious. Classic. And cheap. Score!

Fulton Chain Craft Brewery

What’s dinner without a beer? A visit to Fulton Chain Craft Brewery is a must. Adirondack-themed and dog-friendly, you won’t want to miss drinking their famous “Go Fluff Yourself” beer. Weird name? Yes. Delicious? Heck yes. It’s a peanut butter marshmallow beer that has become very popular in Central New York – for good reason!

The brewery was recently expanded to make a larger taproom. All of their brew tanks are named after the lakes in the Fulton Chain of Lakes throughout the Adirondacks. They also have pictures of the lakes on them, embracing their location.

Fulton Chain Craft Brewery

Wisk Baking Co

You know I’m a sucker for a good coffee shop and bakery. Wisk isn’t that. Wisk Baking Co is an incredible coffee shop and bakery! Featuring a variety of delicious confections, the desserts are almost too beautiful to eat! Almost.

You’ll have a hard time choosing from the bagels, croissants, muffins, and more. Get yourself a slice of cake to go. I’d also recommend the “ADK Campfire” crepe, made with Nutella, Fluff, and graham crackers!

The 9 Best Rides at Enchanted Forest's Water Safari

9. Log Jammer

This is the traditional lazy and meandering slide that’s perfect for kids. It ends in a wave pool that’s perfect for younger visitors.

8. Nairobi Narrows

A pair of parallel slides send thrill-seekers into a pool, allowing rides to race each other or see who can make the biggest splash.

7. Serengeti Surf Hill

This slide is light on equipment but heavy on competition. With four lanes, riders simply grab a mat, dive face first and see who arrives at the bottom the fastest.

6. Cascade Falls

This 500-foot group ride is a high-octane thrill, with steep banked walls providing surprises along the way.

water safari drop slide

This twisting slide loops riders around a translucent tube twice, ending in a splash pool. Its name comes from the tubing, and the fact that riders below can see shadows from above.

4. Rondaxe Run

Multiple waterfalls along the way make this a favorite on hot summer days, while the banked turns give the ride the necessary zip.

3. Black River

This 500-foot slide takes place primarily in the darkness of an enclosed tube, excluding periodic light from air holes. Not for those who are afraid of the dark or claustrophobic.

2. The Curse of the Silverback

This water ride, built in 2009, features a pair of drop-offs, including an initial slide of 100 feet into a whirling bowl. After spinning, riders settle into a splash pool below.

1. Killermanjaro

One of the top choices for thrill-seekers, the amusement park’s tallest water ride allows riders to reach speeds of nearly 30 miles per hour on their speedy ride down.

Enchanted Forest Water Safari adding new water slides in $3 million expansion

  • Published: Aug. 14, 2019, 12:59 p.m.

Enchanted Forest Water Safari

Enchanted Forest Water Safari in Old Forge was named the fourth best water park in the U.S. by TripAdvisor.

A popular Upstate New York water park is expanding in a new $3 million project.

Empire State Development announced this week that Enchanted Forest Water Safari will add three water slides and replace two older slides, Killermanjaro and Serengeti Surf Hill, in an expansion project aimed to increase traffic to Old Forge, N.Y. The ESD awarded the resort $500,000 in Upstate Revitalization Initiative funds toward the improvements estimated to cost $3 million in total.

“Tourism stimulates economic growth and job creation, and the expansion of Enchanted Forest Water Safari will help boost tourism at attractions throughout the Mohawk Valley,” ESD President, CEO and Commissioner Howard Zemsky said in a statement .

According to CNY Central , construction is expected to begin in September on the three new water slides:

  • A four-lane, 300-foot mat slide with loops will replace Serengeti Surf Hill
  • A 200-foot speed slide with a drop launch pad will replace Killermanjaro
  • And a third, new 295-foot slide will be added with loops and a drop launchpad

Water Safari will also overhaul its water water pumps and filtration equipment for the park. Construction is expected to be completed by June 2020.

“We are thrilled to have the support of New York’s Empire State Development for this exciting new expansion project,” Enchanted Forest Water Safari Vice President and Director of Marketing Katie Wojdyla said in a statement. “Killermanjaro and Serengeti Surf Hill have provided millions of rides and memories to guests since 1988, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with our new rides.”

Enchanted Forest Water Safari was named the fourth best water park in America by TripAdvisor earlier this year. The water park, the largest in New York, features more than 50 rides and attractions, including 32 water rides and classic amusement rides, food, games, storybook characters and a circus.

The water park is part of Water Safari Resort, which includes Water’s Edge Inn, Old Forge Camping Resort and Calypso’s Cove Family Fun Park.

Family screaming while going down the steepest drop of Mammoth Water Coaster at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana

Mammoth Water Coaster

That’s right! This 1/3 mile water coaster is  certified by the Guinness World Record folks . Mammoth also won the 2023 Water Park Ride of the Year Golden Ticket Award from Amusement Today, taking the title that  Wildebeest  held for a straight decade!

And your journey takes you both downhill  and  uphill! That’s right!

Mammoth towers seven stories from highest to lowest point and covers more than three acres. The massive Mammoth begins with a conveyor ride up the water coaster’s lift hill. Following each breath-taking drop, your boats will fly back up hill after hill.

What powers these six-passenger boats up the hills? Something called Linear Induction Motor (LIM) technology. In total, six LIMs magically propel the boats on this exciting ride.

Mammoth’s rafts are round, six-passenger boats. That means your thrilling trek may be facing forward, facing sideways, or facing backwards. Facing backwards? Yes, and in the dark. There are five enclosed slide sections. And many twists and turns.

Your whole family will be able to challenge Mammoth together – and watch each other’s delighted faces as you conquer this epic ride.

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari

Splashin’ safari.

Santa Claus, Indiana; USA

water safari drop slide

In the little town of Santa Claus, Indiana, sits one of the highest ranked amusement and water parks in North America. Holiday World is best known for their super-friendly staff, free soft-drinks, free parking, and free sunscreen. But the main pull for the park are their rides; including the four main roller coasters: Raven, Legend, Voyage, and Thunderbird.

Holiday World’s water park, Splashin’ Safari, is free with admission and holds an amazing lineup of fun, thrilling, world-class and award winning water slides; the majority of which were designed by ProSlide company from Ontario, Canada.

Along the extensive lineup are two of the world’s longest hydromagnetic water coasters, Mammoth and Wildebeest, that propels riders uphill via linear induction motors at very quick speeds, as well as the new for 2020 Cheetah Chase water coaster that launches riders using water propulsion! Other special water attractions include one of the largest dark family raft slides in the world (ZOOMbabwe), a large funnel slide (Zinga), a large bowl slide (Bakuli), three wave pools, two children’s slide areas, and a water playground.

  • Safari Sam’s Splash Land (8 kids slides)
  • Tembo Falls (8 kids slides)
  • Kima Bay (water playground with 6 slides)
  • Otorongo (3 slides, enclosed)
  • Jungle Racer (10 lanes)
  • Bakuli (4-seat cloverleaf raft, large bowl)
  • Zinga (4-seat cloverleaf raft, large funnel)
  • ZOOMbabwe (Enclosed)
  • Cheetah Chase (3-seat inline raft)
  • Mammoth (6-seat cloverleaf raft)
  • Wildebeest (4-seat Inline raft)
  • Type: Family raft bowl
  • Make: ProSlide
  • Model: BehemothBOWL 60

Description: Riders start their journey 73 feet up with multiple enclosed slalom curves, before entering a large drop and shooting out into the massive 60 foot wide bowl, making multiple rotations before exiting into a drop in the center and into a pool below.

Cheetah Chase

  • Type: Water coaster
  • Model: Launched Dueling RocketBLAST
  • Elements: Dueling, water propelled horizontal and uphill launches, FlyingSAUCER 30’s
  • Opened: July 4, 2020

Description: New for 2020, Cheetah Chase is Holiday World and Splashin Safari’s third ProSlide water coaster. Two 3-person rafts exit the station parallel to each other to enter a spectacular horizontal and upward launch propelled by water. Riders’ rafts then maneuver multiple tight turns and more jets for a very quick flume experience before coming to a splash at the end and being carried right back into the station where riders had boarded.

Review: Speed and tons of water! Those are the best ways to describe experiencing this new for 2020 one-of-a-kind dual racing water coaster.

The spectacular launch via water jets easily carrying riders horizontal then up the slope feels almost magical, before having it all dump onto you at the top of the hill. Riders then proceed through more drops and uphill sections, and some tight curves within ProSlide’s SAUCER elements producing some nice G-forces. Another winner in Splashin’ Safari’s already-stellar lineup of water attractions, and a must-ride for families and thrill seekers alike! -Marcus

Jungle Racer

  • Type: 10-lane mat racer
  • Model: ProRACER

Description: 10 riders race each other head-first down a three-drop toboggan slide.

Review: A brief but very fun rush with a spectacular splash finale! -Marcus

water safari drop slide

  • Model: HydroMAGNETIC MAMMOTH
  • Elements: Rideable conveyor lift, electro magnetic uphill elements.
  • Opened: May 11, 2012

Description: Riders are brought up the side of a hill on their 6-person rafts via conveyor belt before being sent on their 3 minute, 1/3 mile (1,763 feet) long journey through 7 large drops, 6 magnetically propelled uphill sections, and numerous moments of large water splashes on this unique water coaster. Guinness Book of World Records certified Mammoth as the world’s longest water coaster in 2016.

Review: Holiday World could not have chosen a better name for this monstrosity. First time sliders may not be prepared for the adventure to share with fellow riders that this very long water coaster is capable of. Many large drops and uphill sections with misters and splashes along the way, complete with a finale that gives one of the biggest soakings I think I’ve ever experienced on a water slide; just shy of practically dunking riders into a pool.

A viewing deck gives a great vantage point of this great finale, and I’ve hardly seen riders (adults and kids alike) without a big smile on their faces as they gently float back to the station where they began their journey while absolutely soaked to the bone.

I cannot give enough praise for this water coaster. It remains as my personal #1 water slide in the world and it alone is worth the visit to Holiday World’s water park. -Marcus

water safari drop slide

  • Type: 3 enclosed inner-tube slides

Description: Three separate enclosed flumes take riders down many tight curves or large drops before plunging them through a water curtain and into the pool at the end.

Review: Worth doing three times to try out each unique flume due to their different natures. While short, the center slide with two large drops is certainly the most exciting. -Marcus

water safari drop slide

Safari Sam’s Splash Land

  • Type: 8 children’s body slides
  • Model: KIDZ Rides

Description: A children’s area with 8 unique body slides for riders under 54″ or those accompanied by sliders under 54″.

While not featured on this page, Splashin’ Safari also offers a separate children’s slide area called Tembo Falls (opened 2018) with similar slides. Safari Sam’s Splash Land’s slides end into a pool (18″ deep with zero-depth entry) and Tembo Falls having a runout at the end of each slide.

water safari drop slide

  • Type: Family Raft
  • Opened: May, 1996

Description: A standard family raft water slided with many large curves and small dips before ending into a pool.

Review: A very casual raft slide with moments of exciting high bankings on some curves if your raft has many riders! -Marcus

water safari drop slide

  • Model: HydroMAGNETIC ROCKET
  • Elements: Rideable conveyor lift, electro magnetic uphill elements
  • Opened: 2010

Description: Holiday World’s first water coaster that claimed the record for being the world’s longest when it opened in 2010. Riders are brought up the side of a hill on their 4-person inline rafts via conveyor belt before being sent on their 3 minute, 1/3 mile (1,710 feet) long journey through 7 large airtime-induced drops, 8 magnetically propelled uphill sections, and numerous moments of large water splashes on this fast water coaster.

Review: Wildebeest has been a fan favorite of thrill seekers for its roller coaster-like layout, complete with several fast uphill sections, tight curves, and many large drops that produce a commendable amount of airtime throughout the course! A very speedy and long water coaster that’s a must-do when coming to the water park! -Marcus

water safari drop slide

  • Model: TORNADO 60
  • Opened: 2003

Description: The world’s first ProSlide TORNADO water slide! Riders start 78 feet up with a large drop that enters a large enclosed helix, then drop again to enter the 60 foot wide funnel to complete multiple oscillations up both sides of the wall, then exit out to a pool.

Review: A very thrilling family raft slide with two very large drops and an exciting moment scaling the walls of the massive funnel, producing some fun feelings of floating! -Marcus

water safari drop slide

  • Type: Enclosed family raft

Description: Riders walk up a hill that weaves through the structure of The Legend wooden roller coaster before climbing the stairs tot he 102 foot tall ZOOMbabwe slide. Riders board a circular raft and pass through a water curtain before zooming around wide curves and many large downward slopes for the 887 foot long slide.

Review: The scale of this family raft slide is virtually unmatched! Climbing the steps takes you under and over The Legend wooden roller coaster, giving great views of trains roaring by. The slide has several large sloped drops giving brief moments of speed before entering wide gentle curves in the massive tunnel. The flume isn’t completely dark inside, as there are air holes punched in the ceiling in the form of various tiki faces and give moments of light through this incredibly long slide. -Marcus

AquaDrop Water Slide

There’s nothing simple about this freefalling water slide.

Part of our AquaLaunch Series that features a launch capsule start with a trap door freefall drop, AquaDrop seems simple enough with its straight drop into a run out lane. It’s a different story however, once a guest is standing in the capsule, looking out at the height they’re about to free fall from.

Available in open or enclosed, AquaDrop makes a great addition to municipal parks, resorts, and water parks.
