Excellent self-guided tour where you can see the chip-making process from start to finish. We saw the trucks roll up, the potatoes off the truck being transported into the peelers, slicers, cookers, and then bagged. Very cool!

Then we bought way too many bags of chips down the road at the outlet store; chocolate pretzels, honey twists, and dill pickle. Those dill pickle are the best I've tasted.

A great stop for a family on a road trip.

UTZ Factory Tour – Hanover, PA

At the UTZ factory tour in Hanover, Pennsylvania, you’ll see how they make their potato chips. UTZ also has an outlet store that you can visit to purchase souvenirs and a wide-variety of snack foods that the company produces.

This is a self-guided and free tour. Reservations are not required, though there are specific weekday-only hours. UTZ also highly recommends calling ahead to make sure the tour is available. Find their hours on their website here and their phone number to call to confirm their hours .

UTZ Factory Tour Entrance

UTZ Factory Tour Parking

To take the tour, you’ll want to go to the UTZ factory, which is located at 900 High Street. The factory is large, so you’ll need to find the factory tour entrance and designated parking spaces. Once at the factory on High Street, tour signs pointed us around the corner to tour parking spaces on Kindig Lane. Look for the signs pictured below for parking.

UTZ Factory Tour Parking Sign

Trucks will be pulling in and out of the factory, so be sure to use caution as you walk to the tour entrance. Once you reach the tour entrance, there will be a set of stairs to reach the tour. There is not an elevator available.

UTZ Factory Tour Sign

Once at the top of the stairs, there will be a lobby where the tour begins. A person will be at the desk to greet you, but there is not a fee to take the tour.

The factory tour does not allow photos or videos of the tour. You’ll walk down a long hallway that overlooks the factory floor. The tour will progress from seeing potatoes go into the machines, then they are sliced, salted, seasoned, and packaged.

UTZ Factory History

Since it is a self-guided tour, I let the kids set the pace of the tour. When they show interest in a certain step of the progress, we stayed at that window. There are buttons on the wall that start a narration to explain what is happening on the factory floor. The machines that pack the bags and fold boxes were particularly interesting to the kids.

UTZ Factory Snack Display

At the end of the tour, you’ll receive a snack bag of UTZ chips to enjoy. If you’d like to purchase more snacks, check out the factory outlet store. The UTZ factory outlet store is located at 861 Carlisle Street in Hanover. You’ll need to drive to the store, but it’s only a few minutes away from the tour location.

UTZ Factory Outlet Store

Tips for Visiting the UTZ Factory Tour

  • Be sure to call ahead to confirm their hours of operation. Hours of the tour are limited and on weekdays.
  • Watch for signs for the UTZ Factory Tour when you arrive. It’s a large factory, so it can be a bit confusing to find the tour location.
  • There are coupons for the UTZ factory store that you can find at the factory tour desk.
  • The tour is not stroller-friendly, as there are steps to each the windows that overlook the factory.

Snyder’s of Hanover, the leader of the pretzel industry, offers a free guided factory tour of their manufacturing facility in Hanover, PA. Founded in 1909, producing Olde Tyme Pretzels, the company now manufactures a wide range of snacks and distributes them nationwide. On the tour, you'll see a variety of products being created and packaged. You’ll be amazed by the automation and the robotics are cool to watch! Utz Quality Foods in Hanover, PA offers free self-guided factory tours with audio explanations of the chip manufacturing process. The company was founded in 1921 and today is the largest independent, privately held snack brand in the United States, producing over 3.3 million pounds of snacks per week. On the tour, you will see each step from the potatoes rolling off the trucks to the cleaning, slicing, and frying to the packaging process. Potato chip manufacturing is a very labor intensive process and with all the automation, it is still surprising how many laborers work on the floor. The tour is very informative and the process is fun to watch. The outlet store, located at Clearview Rd (less than a mile away) has an amazing selection including some great gift items and is well worth the visit.

Taking the Snyder’s of Hanover Factory Tour

The entrance for the Snyder's of Hanover Factory Tour and the factory store in Hanover, Pennsylvania.

Back in the 18th century, when German and Swiss German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania, they brought much of their culture with them. From town names to Pennsylvania’s great beer  and  Christmas markets , many different aspects of German culture are still evident in the state.

However, none seem to have had as much national effect as Pennsylvania’s love of pretzels.

In fact, Pennsylvania is so in love with the pretzel, that it’s said that while the average American eats 1.5-2 pounds of pretzels each year, Philadelphians eat 12 times that amount. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that 80% of America’s pretzels are produced in Pennsylvania.

It should come as even less of a surprise that America’s largest manufacturer of pretzels, Snyder’s of Hanover, is located in Pennsylvania.

Started in 1909, Snyder’s of Hanover has been making great pretzels for a really long time. They even claim to still use many of the same recipes that the original owners did.

Snyder’s factory is located in a ridiculously large warehouse on the outskirts of Hanover. Much more industrial looking than the factories of the nearby Martin’s Potato Chips and Utz Potato Chips , the utilitarian structure belies the tasty treats made inside.

Snyder's of Hanover makes America's most popular pretzels.

What drew me out to Snyder’s of Hanover, though, was their factory tour. Located in York County, the “ Factory Tour Capital of the World “, Snyder’s of Hanover is one of the most popular tours in the region, as was evidenced by the size of our tour group: around 25 people.

Tours through the Snyder’s of Hanover factory run in a hallway above the factory floor. This has the benefit of allowing you to get a great overview of the facility, but makes you feel less connected to the factory itself.

As we were led on our 30-minute tour through the factory, our tour guide did a good job of explaining what we were seeing. However, given the large size of the group and the less than panoramic windows looking over the factory below, it was often hard to find the part of the factory she was referring to.

Overall, I enjoyed the Snyder’s of Hanover Factory Tour. However, due to the group size and the separation from the factory floor, I found it to be not as well done as the tours at Martin’s or Utz . On the other hand, my wife appreciated the overview of the factory floor that the tour provided, proving that, just like with the competing brands of snack foods, it may be a matter of personal taste.

All that being said, I think the Snyder’s of Hanover Factory Tour is a great activity, especially if combined with several other factory tours in York County .

Snyder’s of Hanover Factory Tours are offered Tuesday-Thursday every half hour from 10am to 2pm. Reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance and can be made by calling 1-800-233-7125, extension 28592 between 9am and 5pm Monday through Friday.

Tours are given free of charge.

Tours of the factory leave from inside the factory store. The store offers a great selection of Snyder’s of Hanover products, including some hard-to-find ones and seconds. However, many of the prepackaged goods are the same price you’ll find them for in stores, so make sure to shop carefully.

Thank you for your in depth review of both Snyders and Utz! They were very helpful! Do you have a recommendation for a place to stop for lunch and/or dinner in that area? Something kid-friendly, as we have a 5 and 9 year old. Thank you either way!!

I didn’t eat in town, so unfortunately, I don’t have any specific recommendations.

Utz Potato Chips factory.

Great walkthrough of chip-making at the Utz factory. Only about a 20 minute excursion, but free chips at the end and some cool views of chip-making in action. An outlet store around the corner has free samples of every Utz chip flavor (and there are a lot). Between both, about 45 minutes well spent. Try the Butterfinger Pretzels!

Utz Potato Chips sign.

A great self-guided tour of the Utz potato chip plant. At the end of the tour you get a free bag of chips, and they are the best I've ever had. Well worth the time. About two blocks away from the factory is the Utz neon sign on the Utz factory store. You can see it as you drive north of town on Pa Hyw 94.

You can't beat the taste of potato chips fresh off the factory production line.

What are the most unique things to do in Pennsylvania?

We can find a ton of unique things to do in Pennsylvania , making it easy to start exploring. If you ever wondered how the old woman who lived in the shoe must have felt, head over to the Haines Shoe House in York to see for yourself. Tour the quirky house (it’s shaped like a shoe), and have an ice cream treat. Everyone loves a toy store, no matter how old we are, and you’ll find the most unique one in Butler. Playthings, Etc. is shaped like a stealth bomber (and it’s awesome!) and sells all kinds of modern and nostalgic toys. Bring your hammer with you to Ringing Rocks Park, where the rocks make music when you tap them.

What food trails can I take in Pennsylvania?

If you’re looking for some of the best tours in Pennsylvania, head out on one of its food trails. Food trails are great, because they’re self-guided. You probably already know PA’s the Snack Food Capital of the World, right? Well, it’s fitting, then, that we have a snack food trail that leads to such destinations as Hershey’s Chocolate World, Utz, and Herr’s. Most of us love a good hoagie, too, and that means a trip along the hoagie trail. What unique tours in Pennsylvania can I take?

Exploring in PA is just so much fun. Some of the best tours in Pennsylvania are, in fact, the most unique. Have you ever thought of going on an ATV tour , for example? Mines and Meadows in Wampum is, arguably, the most unique ATV tour in the state, because it takes you underground. That’s right. You’ll go underground in a mine, where the only light will be from the ATVs in your group. Did you know there are no wild wolves in Pennsylvania? The only place you can get a glimpse of these majestic animals, and how they live, is with a visit to Wolf Sanctuary of PA in Lititz . Join a guided tour of the sanctuary.

The Utz factory tour is a free tour where you can see how Utz potato chips are made.

The factory tour is self-guided and ends with a free bag of original Utz potato chips.

The Utz Potato Chip Factory Tour

On the tour, you will see the whole potato chip process. From potatoes coming up out of storage and getting washed, peeled and sliced to boxes of chips waiting in storage.

The tour is self-guided with windows looking down into the factory floor. Each area has a button that can be pushed explaining what you are seeing and sharing fun facts.

Looking out the factory windows you will see people working in different areas. Don’t be afraid to wave try can see you too. Sometimes they even wave back!

We have done the Utz Factory Tour in Pennsylvania several times and we all enjoy it. It’s a great tour for kids because it’s self-paced so you can go as slow or fast as you need to.

Each visit to the potato chip factory we usually end up spending 45 minutes to an hour doing the tour, taking pictures and eating our chip sample.

I love that the tour shows the whole process from potato to packaged bag of chips. It’s a great way for my kids to see first hand where chips come from.

A trip to the Utz factory tour is fun and educational. Any age can enjoy the tour, I would say that preschool age and older would appreciate it more, but even younger kids will have fun.

That sounds like such a fun family outing. I’m hungry for chips, now!

Utz Quality Foods Factory Tour

The dog days of summer have arrived…swim team is over, friends are on vacation and the start of a new school year is looming in the not so distant future.  We decided to break out of our normal summer routine for a day and head up to York County, Pennsylvania to learn how potato chips are made.

utz factory tour pa

Truck lovers will be thrilled with this outing from the get go as there are many tractor trailers loading up with Utz supplies that you can see right from the factory tour parking lot.  Once you enter the facility an audio track will give you a brief overview of the Utz Company as you walk up the stairs to the viewing area.

Upstairs is an optional 15 minute film about the company’s history and a lobby area with a display of Utz potato chip varieties that you can spend time viewing before you get to the tour.

From the moment you pull up at Utz you can smell the aroma of potato chips cooking.  The large viewing gallery to see the production was well lit, spacious and had large windows with step stools for kids to get great views.  At every step along the production line there was a button to press to listen to an audio description about what was happening.  The equipment is huge and very close to the viewing windows.

It was fascinating to watch how quickly the potato chips went from whole potatoes to fried chips and the sheer volume of snacks being made was incredible!  You could clearly see the steps of the potatoes being sliced, fried, salted, sorted, seasoned and packaged.  The final windows on the tour are the storage room where you see a football field sized room stacked with potato chips of all varieties waiting to be shipped.  Some days you can also view the tortilla chip production line but this was not available on the day of our visit.

Once you have finished the self-guided tour you return back the way that you came to get your free sample chips in the lobby.  For more samples and “take home” supplies you can head 0.5 miles away to the Utz outlet store where you can purchase bags big and small of your favorite varieties.  You can sample chip flavors before buying here by asking at the register.

It is easy to extend your trip to Hanover with other factory visits.  Revonah Pretzel bakery and Snyders of Hanover pretzels are both located in town.  Nearby in Abbottsville you can visit Martin’s Potato Chip Factory and further North near York itself you can see the famed Harley-Davidson motorcycles in production.   For other family fun you can pick up sandwiches across the street from the Utz factory outlet at Schults Del and head to nearby Cordurus State Park.

A trip to the Utz Quality Foods facility is a fun, educational and delicious way to spend a day!
