The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) is located just outside Abu Dhabi. It is the largest of its kind in the world attracting customers from all over the UAE and the wider Gulf region including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Around 9,000 birds are treated each year for a wide range of ailments. The centre which has a an ophthalmology department, and intensive care unit is equipped to deal with everything from X-Rays, cases of Avian Flu, Falcon Pox, repairing of feathers, and general health checks and provides a 24 hour service. The centre also has two large air conditioned aviaries where falcons can rest while they are moulting, or changing their feathers. Traditionally a way of obtaining food, Falconry today has become more of a national sport and a rite of passage for many young Emirati men, who take their time to train their Falcons, developing a relationship and deep bond with the birds. Groups of friends regularly come together in the evenings to meet and train their birds where the practice becomes more about camaraderie and sharing knowledge than subsistence. The practice of Falconry was recognized by UNESCO in 2012 under the 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity' list. (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)

17 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Abu Dhabi

Written by Jess Lee Updated Dec 22, 2023

Capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is a well-ordered, industrious city with a pretty waterside location.

First inhabited by the nomadic Bani Yas tribe in 1760, the settlement remained a small fishing village until oil was discovered. The revenues transformed Abu Dhabi into the modern city of today — a bustling center of government and business.

Abu Dhabi at dusk

With a coastline rimmed by beaches, Abu Dhabi is one of the best places to visit in the UAE to combine sun and sand with a city break.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi are the major tourist attractions, though, with kayaking trips amid the Eastern Mangroves and the desert dune landscapes of Liwa Oasis within day-tripping distance, there are plenty of adventures and things to do on the city's doorstep.

Plan your stay with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Abu Dhabi.

Visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Admire the global culture & art collection at the louvre abu dhabi, kayak abu dhabi's eastern mangroves, chill out on saadiyat island's sandy shore, tour qasr al watan, thrill seek at ferrari world, see the city from the water on a cruise, soak up the sun on yas island, take the kids to warner bros world, fuel up on formula one at the yas marina circuit, day trip to the desert dunes, discover the nature reserve on sir bani yas island, meet falcons close up at abu dhabi falcon hospital, cool off at yas waterworld, head up to observation deck at 300 for high tea, qasr al-hosn, heritage village, things for shoppers to do in abu dhabi.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Clad in white marble, the beautiful and absolutely mammoth Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is Abu Dhabi's landmark building and by far the most popular sightseeing attraction in the city.

The mosque fuses Mameluke, Ottoman, and Fatimid design elements to create a harmonious and thoroughly modern mosque that celebrates Islamic architecture.

Artisans used glasswork, mosaic tiling, and intricate carvings to spectacular effect on both the interior and exterior.

It was opened in 2007 after nearly 20 years of construction. Able to hold 40,000 worshippers, it is the biggest mosque in the United Arab Emirates, and like the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah (the UAE's second biggest mosque), it is dedicated to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan.

Non-Muslims are allowed into all areas of the mosque (including the vast library), and the mosque runs regular free guided tours

View of the Louvre Abu Dhabi

The Middle East's most spectacular museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi traces the entire history of humanity's artistic achievements, from the Neolithic right up to the current day.

The wealth and diversity of art on display, from ancient Egyptian statuary to famous paintings by Picasso, is mind-boggling, while the museum's contemporary architecture, with its galleries gathered under a vast silver dome, is a reason to visit in itself.

As well as the permanent collection, which runs over 12 galleries, several major temporary exhibitions are staged each year.

The Louvre is the first of three planned major museums to open on Saadiyat Island, which is set to become the cultural heartbeat of Abu Dhabi in the coming years.

The other two - Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum - are still in the planning phases.

Kayaking at sunset in Abu Dhabi

To see a different side of Abu Dhabi's steel and glass exterior, head into the mangrove forests that still ring the islands along the shore surrounding the city.

There's a bundle of kayaking tours available for all levels of experience and age, ranging from 1.5 hours to three hours of paddling.

The Eco Tour allows you to understand the important ecology of mangroves, as well as explore these beautiful last remnants of the city's forests. Another interesting thing to do for a really special experience, is to sign up for night tours and discover the mangroves by gliding through the waters after dark.

Hammocks on Saadiyat Island beach

Saadiyat Island is one of Abu Dhabi's top sun-seeker destinations.

Saadiyat Beach is a long strip of white sand on the island's western shore, with a small admission fee for beachgoers. It has excellent facilities, including on-duty lifeguards, a café for refreshments, and plenty of sun loungers and shades.

For active sun-seekers, you can rent kayaks and windsurfing equipment on the beach.

The beach is backed by a rim of protected dunes where hawksbill turtles nest. Access to the beach is on a raised wooden boardwalk so that this area is not disturbed.

If you want a more luxurious day on the sand, head farther north along Saadiyat Island's coast to the private Saadiyat Beach Club. A day pass grants you access to this exclusive beach strip with all its facilities, including a pool, restaurants, and various lounge areas.

Qasr Al Watan

Recently opened to the public, Qasr Al Watan (the UAE's Presidential Palace) has quickly become a must-do on Abu Dhabi itineraries for anyone interested in digging deeper into the culture, history, and architecture of the UAE.

The grandiose interiors of the state rooms, including the Great Hall and Presidential Banqueting Hall, with their crystal chandeliers, domes, arches, vast amounts of marble, and intricate mosaic and muqarna (ornamental vaulting) detailing, is enough of a reason to visit.

For those with a historic bent, the House of Knowledge exhibit space offers a thorough and well-curated collection that covers the Arab world's prominent role in the history of modern science, literature, and art. A separate exhibit within Qasr Al Watan displays diplomatic gifts given by world leaders to the UAE.

Qasr Al Watan's library is a working public library with an impressive collection of books and periodicals, research articles, and rare manuscripts, all focused on the UAE's history, heritage, culture, social and political developments, and geography. Although most important as a research focus point for the local community and scholars, casual visitors touring the palace are welcome to visit.

Guided tours are available, as well as audio guides if you prefer to tour independently.

After dark, the palace exterior is lit up in a short sound and light show that whizzes through UAE history.

There's also a collection of Ferrari's cars, with models dating back to 1947, and a Ferrari factory tour and Ferrari knowledge game show for true car nerds.

Boat Tours

For the best views of Abu Dhabi's glittering skyscrapers, you need to head out onto the water. The views of the high-rises are quite spectacular as you sail out from the marina.

Several different operators run tours for all types of budgets. During the day, island hopping tours are very popular and provide a relaxing sightseeing option. They include some beach and snorkeling time on various islands within the bay.

For city views, though, head out on a sunset or evening dinner tour so that you can see the city lights flicker into action as dusk sets over the city.

There are also pearl tours, where you head out into the mangroves area in a small dhow and learn about Abu Dhabi's pearl diving heritage.

Yas Island

Yas Beach on Yas Island is a popular choice for a full day at the beach. Day passes here grant beachgoers access to a wealth of facilities that will please both families looking for an easygoing beach day and groups of friends seeking a fun-filled beach experience.

There are cafés, restaurants, and food kiosks on-site offering a range of cuisines; a large swimming pool area with cabanas for rent; plenty of sun loungers and shades for lazing on the sand; and more lounging areas off the sand.

Yas Beach's water sports offices offer a range of rental equipment for active visitors, including kayaks, and lifeguards are on duty throughout the day.

Warner Bros World

Yas Island's latest theme park addition, Warner Bros World is dedicated to its cartoon, movie, and comic book heroes and villains, with all rides based around these characters.

With six "lands" all captured under one roof (the entire theme park is inside and air-conditioned) this is one of the best places to visit for families.

There are rides suitable for tots to teens. Bedrock and Cartoon Junction are specifically set up for little ones, while Gotham City and Metropolis are home to some of the big-hitter highlight rides, which combine 4D interactive content with roller coaster-style thrills and spills.

Yas Marina's F1 circuit track

Abu Dhabi's Formula One Grand Prix, which takes place in November, is the city's big annual event and is held at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island.

If you're not in town for the racing, you can still experience some of that Formula One glamor year-round. There are regular guided tours of the circuit, including visits to the pits, grandstand, and podium for Formula One fans who want to see the track and get a behind-the-scenes look at the circuit.

For speed fans, though, Yas Marina Circuit is where you can book a variety of drive experiences (as either the driver or passenger in various styles of racing car) on the Formula One track itself.

If you just want to walk (or run, or cycle) on the track, every Tuesday and Saturday night the circuit is opened up for anyone who wants to use the track for exercise, and entry is free.

Liwa Oasis

The most popular day trip or overnight trip from Abu Dhabi city is a desert safari to the south of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, either to the beautiful Liwa Oasis, which lays right on the edge of the Empty Quarter, or to the Al Khatim Desert near Al Ain .

The Empty Quarter desert contains the largest sand dunes in the world, and the dunes of both areas are a fantastic playground for anyone who wants to ride dune buggies, try sandboarding, go camel trekking, or simply soak up the vast star-strewn desert sky after dark at a desert camp.

Most trips include stops to visit a camel farm and offer a taste of traditional desert life, as well as heading into the dunes themselves.

Gazelles on Sir Bani Yas Island

One of the best short breaks from Abu Dhabi city is to the wildlife reserve of Sir Bani Yas Island, first established by Sheikh Zayed.

Indigenous Arabian wildlife such as gazelles and the endangered Arabian Oryx plus introduced animals, including giraffes and leopards, free roam within the vast reserve, which covers the interior of Sir Bani Yas Island.

The luxury resort here offers guests a variety of activities, including 4x4 safaris, walking safaris, and horse-riding tours to view wildlife within the reserve, as well as other activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking.

The island is accessed by boat (booked through the resort) from Jebel Dhanna, 260 kilometers west of the city.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is a working veterinary hospital for ill and injured falcons, but it also provides guided tours of its facilities for interested visitors.

The tours allow you to get up close and personal with these birds of prey in the wards, while an on-site museum explains the history of falconry.

Guided tours of the hospital (which must be pre-booked) are held twice daily Monday to Thursday and once daily Friday and Sunday and are one of the few opportunities a visitor has in Abu Dhabi to connect with traditional Emirati heritage.

If you're up for the challenge, you may also have the chance to hold one of the birds, or even to feed one, depending on the activities the vets are performing at the time of your visit.

Yas Waterworld

If the heat is grinding you down, head to Yas Island to cool off at the water park. Yas Waterworld is a mammoth theme park, spanning 37 acres with 40 rides, including multiple waterslides and an inner-tube river ride.

For serious adrenaline seekers, there's also the world's first hydromagnetic tornado water rafting ride; the world's largest surfable sheet wave; and the Jebel Drop, a free-fall speed waterslide.

For families with smaller children, there are also dedicated areas for gentler play.

Facilities are excellent, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and shops to make it easy to spend a whole day of water park action here.

Observation Deck at 300

Abu Dhabi's answer to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is this observation deck. It offers skyline views from the highest point in the city, on the 74th floor of the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers hotel (at 300 meters above sea level).

There is an entry fee for non-guests of the hotel, but the ticket price can be redeemed for food and drink from the observation deck's restaurant which serves snacks and light bites; soft drinks; and a popular high-tea experience.

Having high tea up here is a leisurely way to take in the views, which swoop across the coast and the city with the arid desert plains beyond.

Address: Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, Corniche Road, Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al-Hosn

The recently restored Al-Hosn Fort, also known as the Old Fort or the White Fort, is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi and one of its major historical points of interest.

The palace was built in 1793 as the residence of the ruling family and the seat of government.

The interior of the Al Hosn Fort has been modernized and is now used as a museum that traces the history and culture of Abu Dhabi, with oral histories and plenty of historical photographs on show.

The courtyard and the magnificent tile work over the main northern gate are notable features.

Address: Hamdan bin Mohammed Street, Abu Dhabi

Heritage Village

Abu Dhabi's Heritage Village is an authentic replica of a typical Bedouin village that gives visitors an idea of Emirati life before the oil boom.

It's located in a pretty beach area of the city, which is a pleasant place to wander after a visit.

There are exhibits featuring traditional day-to-day objects, workshops where you can watch craftspeople demonstrate Emirati metalwork and weaving skills, and displays introducing visitors to local agriculture and the pearl diving trade-the main economies here before oil was discovered.

The heritage village is a bit rundown these days, but it remains one of the few places in the city where traditional Emirati life can be explored.

Address: Breakwater Road, Abu Dhabi

Traditional Arabic shoes

For mall shopping, Yas Mall on Yas Island is the major destination, with 370 shops.

For crafts, the World Trade Center Souk in downtown Abu Dhabi is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional bazaar, designed by architect Norman Foster. The shops here sell good gift items, ranging from incense and spices to inlaid woodwork and textiles.

To pick up a piece of classic Arab-style gold jewelry, head to the Gold Souq inside Madinat Zayed Shopping Center, where you'll find dozens of gold vendors.

So whether you’re a culture vulture or a beach bod, check out our ultimate collection of Abu Dhabi 1 Day itineraries below.

If you really want to get to grips with the history and culture of this fascinating country, then this itinerary is for you. The itinerary includes:

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Qasr al hosn.

  • Abu Dhabi Corniche & The Observation Deck at Etihad Towers or The Emirates Palace
  • Qasr Al Watan or the Louvre
  • An evening desert safari

Start your day with a light breakfast before travelling to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque . If you arrive early (the mosque opens to visitors at 9:00 am every day except Friday), this is the best time to visit as you will beat the crowds (most are day trippers from Dubai ).

Access to the Mosque is via an underground visitor centre, where you must register and pass a security check.

There is a strict dress code for the mosque , so be sure to wear non-transparent clothing that covers you from wrist to ankle, without any cuts or slits that reveal skin. If you’re female, be sure to take a head scarf to cover your hair. If you do not have appropriate attire, you will be directed to the nearby souk (market) with the mosque complex to purchase something appropriate (they stopped lending ladies a free abaya during COVID).

Once inside the mosque, you can take a guided tour or do a self-guided tour around the mosque. Information is available from the information desk as you enter the mosque. You should stick to the designated paths and only take photographs at designated photo stops.

Mosque Abu Dhabi

2 hours is plenty of time to enjoy this beautiful architectural marvel and symbol of devotion. For an in-depth guide to visiting the Sheikh Zayed Mosque click here .

You may have time for refreshments in the small mall-like area beneath the mosque before taking a 20-minute taxi ride to the next location Qasr Al Hosn & The House of the Artisans , where we would advise spending another 2 hours.

Qasr Al Hosn (along with the Al Maqta tower) is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi and was home to the ruling Al Nahyan family and was the seat of government until 1968. Built of white coral stone in the traditional style, the fort has been converted into a museum where you can find out about the history of Abu Dhabi and its people and how the fort has been used over the ages.

trip abu dhabi

Note unlike the Mosque, there is a small entrance fee to visit this important cultural attraction in the capital of the UAE.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

The Corniche (Abu Dhabi’s famous coastal promenade) is within easy reach of Qasr Al Hosn (another 10-minute taxi ride) and is the perfect place to find a spot of lunch.

We would recommend having a light bite at the Observation Deck at 300 in the Conrad Hotel at Etihad Towers. Found on the 74th floor of the five-star hotel, the Observation Deck has stunning views across the city in every direction.

As well as sandwiches, pastries, and cakes, the Observation Deck serves delectable Afternoon teas (which should be booked at least 24 hours in advance if you want to partake in this special experience).

An alternative is to have a spot of lunch at the spectacular Emirates Palace Hotel, situated just across the road – famously known for its camel burgers, gold flake cappuccinos and gold vending machine!

After a refreshment break, head to the end of the Corniche to visit Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace. This will take no more than 10 minutes in a taxi.

Qasr Al Watan

After a busy morning of sightseeing, you may feel that you want to kick back and relax for an hour or two, but if you can push yourself to keep going, a visit to Qasr Al Watan is well worth it. Very few buildings open to the public anywhere in the world are of this magnitude of opulence.

Everywhere you look, you are met with the most intricate of details, shiny golden sculptures, perfectly constructed mosaics, and elaborate stained glass windows. This is a place that really makes you say wow.

Qasr Al Watan

2 hours in ample time to explore the building by yourself. There is a cafe offering refreshments as well as a gift shop that sells stylish and sophisticated gifts.

Alternate Itinerary – Louvre Abu Dhabi

Another option for your afternoon is to visit the stunning Louvre Museum situated on Saadiyat Island. It’s another of the city’s most iconic and beautiful landmark buildings . For art and history lovers, it’s a must!

You could, at a real push, fit the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Hosn, Louvre and Qasr Al Watan all in one perfect day exploring the capital of the United Arab Emirates, but honestly, you’ll be pushed for time and not able to fully appreciate each, so we’d choose two or three of these four important cultral attractions.

Desert Safari

No trip to Abu Dhabi is complete without a journey into the desert.

A desert safari tour is relatively easy to organise and can be booked through your hotel or through platforms like Get Your Guide. Most tours will pick you up from your hotel or any major tourist attraction, so being picked up anywhere along the Corniche shouldn’t be a problem.

Evening Safaris usually pick up guests around 4:00 pm, dropping guests back to the city around 10-11:00 pm

A desert safari usually includes camel riding, a tasty barbecue dinner featuring lots of local favourites, some form of entertainment like tanoura or belly-dancing, and the option to have a henna tattoo. They may also include dune bashing, sandboarding, and falconry.

There are many different safaris on offer, so we help you choose the best type of desert safari in Abu Dhabi in this detailed guide.

For those seeking a day of opulent indulgence, there is just one word – Saadiyat.

Saadiyat Island is home to five beautiful five-star hotels, all equipped with their own beautiful spa facilities and gourmet restaurants. Be truly pampered in 5-star luxury hotel and let your worries float away while you relax on the 7-kilometre stretch of pristine white coral sand.

Hotel Day Packages

Most hotels offer day packages that include spa treatments, beach and pool access, and afternoon tea or vouchers that can be offset in resort restaurants.

One of our favourite packages can be found at the Park Hyatt Hotel , which includes a yoga session and time for pampering a relaxation – one of the best in the Middle East!

trip abu dhabi

Other Beach Options

A slightly cheaper, but still exclusive option is buying a day pass to Saadiyat Beach Club . Here you can enjoy a heated infinity pool as well as excellent changing facilities, with a steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, and cold plunge pools.

There is also a gym, hairdresser and various health and beauty treatment options on site. Not to mention several wonderful restaurants and access to the Arabian Gulf’s stunning beach and warm waters.

trip abu dhabi

After a day of pampering

It’s easy to stick around for a lovely dinner too, or if you feel like stepping things up a gear, head into the city for a bit of glamour – perhaps try out a ladies’ night, or have a romantic dinner with views across the city.

Our helpful lists of top ladies nights and stunning rooftop bars will help to ensure that you have a wonderful night.

Zip Line at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Simple! Stick to Yas Island and do two theme parks in one day.

We’d recommend starting the day with either Ferrari World (home to the world’s fastest roller coaster and many other thrilling adrenaline experiences) or Warner Brothers World (the world’s largest indoor theme park) and heading to Yas Waterworld to cool off in the afternoon.

trip abu dhabi

Finish your day with dinner and drinks at the W Hotel at the heart of Yas Marina Circuit.

You may be lucky enough to see cars zooming by or local residences jogging or cycling around the track. If you want to party til the early hours, head to Yas Bay and see fire dancers at Siddharta Lounge (certain days only) or join in with some bowling fun at Central .

Ladies watching the Abu Dhbai Grand Prix fromthe W Hotel Yas marina Circuit

To really understand a country, you have to understand the natural environment, and there are many opportunities to get to grips with nature in Abu Dhabi. We suggest that you visit:

  • Either Jubail Mangrove Park for a walk or Eastern Mangroves for kayaking
  • Saadiyat Beach for swimming, snorkelling, and dolphin spotting.
  • The desert for a true taste of the natural environment (perhaps including a trip to the fossil dunes or Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
  • Alternatively, stay in the city and visit Um Al Emarat Park.

Visit the Mangroves

Start your day with a kayak tour of the Eastern Mangroves or a stroll around the Jubail Mangrove Park (don’t forget to check the tide times – it’s best to see the mangroves at high tide).

Eastern Mangroves Kayaking into the smaller channels of the mangroves forest in Abu Dhabi

From Jubail Mangrove Park, head to Saadiyat Beach Club or Soul Beach (15 minutes by taxi or 30 minutes by taxi from Eastern Mangroves) to experience the fine white sands and tropical warm water. You might even spot a dolphin or two.

If you want to continue your marine journey indoors rather than sitting on the beach, you could consider heading to the National Aquarium , a 40-minute taxi ride from Saadiyat Beach (13 minutes from Eastern Mangroves), in the sparkly new Al Qana development.

Al Qana is home to a lot of new restaurants, including home-grown Emriati brands, a Wellness Hub The Bridge, and the plush new National Aquarium , which is home to more than 300 different species of marine animals.

trip abu dhabi

Head Out Into The Desert

As the temperature drops later in the day, head out on a Desert Safari to really get to grips with the local environment. Be sure to select an eco-friendly safari that does not include activities like dune bashing, which damage the natural ecosystem of the sand dunes.

Alternatively, talk to your hotel, who may be able to organise a private driver to take you to the Fossil Dunes and/or Al Wathba Wetland Reserve (50km from Abu Dhabi, open from October until the end of April).

Sunset is a great time to visit the wetlands, which are home to a wide variety of birds, including flamingoes.

If you decide to stay in the city, head to one of Abu Dhabi’s beautiful parks for the evening.

There are many parks around the city, but you shouldn’t miss the spectacular Umm Al Emarat Park.

The park includes a botanical garden, a children’s park with a splash pad, a paddling area and petting zoo, a flower garden, beautiful fountains, great food and beverage outlets, and lots of open space to run around.

If you are in Abu Dhabi with young children, this is the ideal way to round out your perfect day in Abu Dhabi with an authentic local experience.

Umm Al Emarat Park Abu Dhabi

If time allows (really, you need a minimum of two days in the Emirate), we would also recommend a trip to Al Ain to visit Jebel Hafeet (The Green Mountain), the Green Mubazzah, and Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stops can also be made en route to Al Ain to admire the swathes of sand dunes that flank the main road.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre at Al Ain Zoo is also a great place to visit. This could make a full-day trip in its own right, so it is only really advisable if you have a few days to explore the area.

Not everything in Abu Dhabi is expensive! Come and see our guide to the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi for Free (or Really cheap!)

If there’s one thing the city isn’t short on its shopping malls and ample opportunities to spend!

Unfortunately, there are no old-fashioned souks or bazaars in Abu Dhabi. The closest thing can be found on the World Trade Centre (WTC) ground floor, which occupies your site of the old souk that burned down in 2003.

Designed by Norman Foster, the WTC souk nods to tradition with its brown wooden beams and brightly coloured stained glass. Whilst you will find rows of abayas, lanterns, cushion covers, dates, and spices, it may not be the best place to bag a bargain – for very photogenic and packed with souvenir-buying opportunities.

The streets of Abu Dhabi are full of tailor shops where you can have items made cheaply; there are also lots of little gift shops with items made in China for AED 5 or 10 – the small and unassuming Hamdan Center is a treasure trove of local goodies. Not to mention the famous Madinat Zayed shopping centre, which is jam-packed full of interesting bits and pieces, as well as the city’s Gold Souk.

Souvenirs in Abu Dhabi madinat shopping

At the other end of the scale, if designer gear is what you’re after, head to the Galleria on Al Maryah Island , where you will find a large array of high-street stores and high-end boutiques. Al Maryah is very close to Saadiyat, so you could team up a morning of shopping with an afternoon at the beach or a spa treatment in one of Saadiyat’s 5-star hotels.

Yas Mall , on Yas Island, also contains its fair share of designer shops as well as having the added benefit of being close to all of the action on Yas Island. It also contains a multiplex cinema and the Kidzania edutainment centre – great if you’re looking for somewhere to drop the kids whilst you shop until you drop!

You could easily combine a shopping day with a theme park day on Yas if you’d like to mix a little of both the best modern Abu Dhabi experiences.

If you like the sound of the itineraries above but can’t quite squeeze everything in, then we would recommend spending the morning at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, followed by a few hours at Saadiyat Beach Club, and then ending the day with a desert safari and Arabic barbecue.

You may even be back in time to experience the glitz and glamour of the city at night, so head to Yas Waterfront to stroll along the promenade, grab a few cocktails or dance the night away!

We hope that you will enjoy your time in Abu Dhabi. One day really isn’t enough to experience this fantastic city, but we hope that our selection of one-day itineraries has given you an idea of what not to miss!

Things to know before traveling to Abu Dhabi

Most likely yes. However, many countries qualify for a visa on arrival , more information can be found on the Emirates' official website .

Within all seven emirates, the official currency is the Emirati Dirham (AED). This means you don't have to exchange money when traveling to several of the emirates belonging to the U.A.E. Here  you can find the current exchange rates, at the time of writing €1 is approximately 4AED and $1 is approximately 3,70AED.

While there have been plans to build a metro in Abu Dhabi for years, currently the only public transport available are buses. Buses are modern and a good way to get around Abu Dhabi on a budget. In order to travel on the buses, you will need a Hafilat Card , which you can buy at several locations in Abu Dhabi, such as the Al Wahda bus terminal and the International Airport. You can charge the card with any desired amount. Bus rides within the city center are 2AED. Remember to check in when getting on the bus and check out when alighting. You can plan your Abu Dhabi journey here .

Yes, there is! Besides Uber, there is also Careem, which is the Middle Eastern version of Uber. Keep in mind that due to local regulations Uber and Careem usually cost a little bit more than a regular taxi.

There are regular buses leaving from Al Ghubaiba bus station (in Dubai) to Al Wahda bus station (in Abu Dhabi). Bus E100 takes approximately 2 hours (sometimes a bit longer), and the journey costs 25AED.

Best 3-star hotel in Abu Dhabi: Centro Al Manhal (by Rotana)

Dubai itinerary - Abu Dhabi itinerary - where to stay

I was very happy with our stay at the Centro Al Manhal , we booked it last minute and got a really good deal.

The rooms are stylish with a modern bathroom. Our room was on the 15th floor and had a great view. Rooms have air conditioning, comfortable beds, and coffee and tea-making facilities.

There are a gym, a swimming pool, and an onsite restaurant called C.Taste. The staff is very friendly and it's only a 5-minute walk to the Abu Dhabi bus station.

Go for a swim in the outdoor pool, relax at the Sense Spa or enjoy a meal at one of the eight restaurants.

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi ☆☆☆☆☆

trip abu dhabi

If you're going to splurge on a hotel in Abu Dhabi, make it the St. Regis Hotel ! This splendid hotel is located right at Abu Dhabi's Corniche.

All rooms and suites offer a beautiful view of the water and promenade. Complimentary for every hotel guest is the signature St. Regis Butler Service.

The entire staff is very welcoming and you will feel like a VIP throughout your entire stay.

One of the highlights of the hotel is the Nation Riviera Beach Club, which can be accessed via a private, air-conditioned, marble underpass that runs below the Corniche.

Here you find a spacious infinity pool, gardens, and a 200-meter private beach. If you are traveling as a family, your kids will love the Treasure Island Children’s Club.

What to see in Abu Dhabi: day 1

Sheikh zayed grand mosque.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque Abu Dhabi

Helen from Helen on her Holidays : on your first day in Abu Dhabi, I recommend you head straight to the famous Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

It’s the largest mosque in the country and one of the largest mosques anywhere in the world. It's also one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever visited and undoubtedly one of the best places in Abu Dhabi.

The central courtyard is a wonder. It’s reputed to be the largest marble mosaic in the world and measures around 17,000 m2.

Beautifully intricate floral patterns cover the floors and columns, and each column is topped in gold.

The interior is no less impressive, enormous, gorgeous chandeliers illuminate the huge prayer hall, which can accommodate over 7,000 worshippers. The floor is covered with the world’s largest carpet.

The mosque’s timeless design, topped with 82 domes, makes it seem like it could have been here for hundreds of years, but it was actually only opened in 2007 and is full of technological touches.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi

Practical information about visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

  • How to get there: you can easily reach the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque by public transport, bus 54 and 94 run often and take approximately 30 minutes from the Al Wahda bus station.
  • Opening hours: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open to non-Muslims from Saturday to Thursday, and from late afternoon onwards on Friday, except during Ramadan.
  • How to dress for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque : both men and women are asked to wear loose-fitting conservative clothing (no shorts, short skirts, crop tops, etc).
  • You need to take off your shoes before entering the mosque. If you’re not wearing clothes according to the dress code, you’ll be asked to wear clothing provided by the mosque at the entrance.
  • Cultural tour: to make the most of your visit, I recommend taking the fascinating official cultural tour which runs several times a day and gives an overview of the mosque and an introduction to Emirati culture.

Both visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and taking a tour are completely free.

However, if you want to learn more about this amazing building as well as the history, beauty, and culture of Abu Dhabi, there is no way better to do it than taking thi s guided city tour !

Abu Dhabi Eastern Mangroves

Abu Dhabi Kayaking Mangroves

Catrina from 24 Hours Layover : escape the city and the skyscrapers and head to the mangrove forest to experience something really unique and different!

Here you can try your hand at kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) in the natural mangrove forest.

The Eastern Mangroves are home to many species of marine and birdlife, and it is a really beautiful and calm place to spend a couple of hours.

To access the facilities, walk straight through the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel lobby and onto the Eastern Mangroves Promenade. By BOA Steakhouse on the marina, you will find Captain Tony's kayaking and SUP station.

Don't worry if you haven't tried kayaking or SUP before, the instructor will guide you through everything beforehand.

Plus, if you don't feel confident going out into the mangroves alone, you can pay a guide to come with you for an extra 60 dirhams.

Wear swim gear under your clothes and bring a towel . There is a secure area where you can leave your belongings, however, if you want to bring your phone for pictures, make sure you have a waterproof cover, or better still, bring a GoPro or a waterproof bag !

There are some sandbanks where you can stop off and have a rest along the way if you wish. From here you can see the Abu Dhabi skyline in the distance, which looks really stunning.

Practical information about visiting the Eastern Mangroves

How to get there: when following this itinerary the quickest way to reach the Eastern Mangroves is by taking a taxi from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel. This will cost you approximately 20 AED and takes around 10 minutes.

Opening hours: opening times for kayaking and SUP in the mangroves are from 7 am to 7 pm every day.

Prices: a 2-hour paddle boarding rental will cost 120 dirhams ($32) and a 2-hour rental in a double kayak will cost 160 dirhams ($43).

The Louvre Abu Dhabi

louvre-museum-abu-dhabi-phenomenalglobe.com

Ania from The Travelling Twins : as a former resident of Abu Dhabi, I can say from personal experience the Louvre is one of the Abu Dhabi landmarks you just can't miss!

If you love the Paris Louvre and could happily spend days on end there browsing those magnificent halls, you will love the Abu Dhabi Louvre as well.

The building was designed by Pritzker Prizewinner Jean Nouvel and opened its doors to the public in 2017. The surroundings are carefully manicured, and the entrance is engaging and attractively designed.

Although the Abu Dhabi collection is quite small, everything is beautifully set out in a labyrinth of comparatively small galleries.

Each item seems to be presented consciously in a perfect sequence. The Louvre galleries will guide you through the ages and themes of cultural development.

While not to be compared with its bigger brother in Paris, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a great place to visit, especially when in Abu Dhabi with kids .

It's a beautiful and educational place, worthy of a spot on your Abu Dhabi trip itinerary.

Practical information about visiting the Louvre Abu Dhabi

How to get there: if you are following this itinerary, the easiest way to travel from the Eastern Mangroves to the Louvre Abu Dhabi is by taxi. This will cost approximately 30 AED and take around 20 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take bus 26 or 56 from the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel and get off after three stops to change to bus 94 (departing from Al Sa'adah, Sultan Bin Zayed St).

The total journey takes just over an hour and costs a mere 4 AED.

Opening hours: the Louvre Abu Dhabi is open from 10 am to 8 pm from Saturdays to Wednesdays, and from 10 am to 10 pm on Thursdays and Fridays.

Ticket prices : a regular ticket costs 63 AED, a youth ticket (between ages 13 and 22) costs 31.5 AED, and kids below 13 years old are free.

Buy your ticket online now and skip the line !

Abu Dhabi activities: day 2

The emirates palace.

The Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi

Raluca from Whisper Wanderlust : the Emirates Palace is one of the most impressive places you can visit in Abu Dhabi. The luxurious hotel is situated right on the seafront and opens to the Persian Gulf.

It is one of the most expensive hotels in the world. If you want to spend a night or more here, you must know that the hotel has about 400 rooms, which cost several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per night .

However, even if you can't afford a night here, you can still visit the Emirates Palace hotel for free.

The hotel has beautiful interiors, decorated with gold, marble, and pearl, chandeliers with Swarovski stones, but also gorgeous fountains and spectacular gardens.

The golden central dome is absolutely stunning! The hotel extends over a length of 1 kilometer and has a lovely private beach where guests can enjoy the white sand and the turquoise water.

Moreover, the complex has 14 restaurants with international cuisines from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Drink a cup of Golden Coffee

If you want to indulge but don't want to spend a fortune, opt for a Palace Cappuccino at Le Cafe (served between 7 am and 12:30 am).

This signature drink is a beautifully presented cup of coffee sprinkled with actual 23-carat gold flakes!

While not a cheap cappuccino (60 AED), you're paying mostly for the experience as this isn't something you're likely to have tasted before ( click here to book your Golden Coffee experience online ).

I'm sure you will enjoy your visit here just as much as I did, so make sure to pay the Emirates Palace a visit during your Abu Dhabi vacation.

Practical information about visiting the Emirates Palace

How to get there: bus 10 and 34 stop near the Emirates Palace.

Opening hours : while the hotel is open 24 hours a day, it's best to visit during the day if you aren't a hotel guest.

The Presidential Palace of the UAE (Qasr Al Watan)

Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi - photo by Amanda from Fly Stay Luxe

Amanda from Bucket List Seekers : in March 2019, the President and Ruler of the UAE opened the Qasr Al Watan Wing of the Presidential Palace and the surrounding gardens to the public.

For the first time ever, tourists were allowed a peek inside the palace walls and learn about modern Emirati and Arabian culture.

Many people visiting Abu Dhabi flock to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to see the spectacular marble-tiled courtyard, white minarets, and gold-laced hallways.

However, the Presidential Palace takes this opulence to a whole new level. It's definitely one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi.

Located right near the Emirate Palace Hotel , the Presidential Palace is absolutely enormous and features a jaw-dropping Great Hall (see picture above) finished with intricate marble tiling and gold trim that is very familiar throughout the UAE.

There is also a series of museum rooms, where you can learn about the different functions of each part of the palace and about the Sheikhs (rulers) from each of the seven Emirates (kingdoms) that make up the United Arab Emirates.

You’ll get to see inside the Qasr Al Watan Library and the Presidential Banquet Hall. It's where Emirati dinners take place and international diplomats are hosted on a regular basis.

There is also an interactive light show held at the palace every evening.

Practical information about visiting the Qasr Al Watan

How to get there: bus 10 and 34 stop near the Presidential Palace.

Opening hours : The Qasr Al Watan is open daily from 11 am to 10 pm.

Ticket prices: admission is 60 AED for adults and 30 AED for children aged 4-17 years to see the palace and gardens or 25 AED for adults and 12 AED for children for the gardens only.

However, I highly recommend paying the extra money to see inside the palace itself, as I’ve never seen a more opulent palace in my life!

Click here to buy your Qasr Al Watan ticket online

The Observation Deck at 300

View of Abu Dhabi from Observation Deck at 300 - photo by The Travel Sisters

Matilda from The Travel Sisters : the Observation Deck at 300 is a must-do on any Abu Dhabi sightseeing itinerary!

Located on the 74 th  floor in Tower 2 of Jumeirah at the Etihad Towers, the observation deck is the highest vantage point in Abu Dhabi and offers 360-degree views of the city.

If you visit on a clear day, it is a great place to enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline and Arabian Gulf. You can see major tourist attractions such as the Emirates Palace, the Presidential Palace, and more.

Visitors are free to walk around or they can take a seat at one of the available tables and enjoy snacks and beverages from the café.

In the afternoon this is also one of the best spots to have afternoon tea. Some of the windows are dirty so make sure to walk around a bit before choosing a table.

Although the observation deck gets crowded in the evening, one of the best times to visit is late afternoon in time to catch the sunset.

Practical information about visiting the Observation Deck at 300

How to get there: from the Emirates Palace it's only a 20-minute walk to the Observation Deck.

Opening hours: the Observation Deck at 300 is open daily from 10 am until 7 pm.

Ticket prices: the entrance fee is 95 AED. This includes a 55 AED credit voucher that can be used for food and beverages. However, if you are staying at the hotel, admission is free.

More information can be found here .

Dinner at Villa Toscana, St. Regis Abu Dhabi

Disclosure: I was hosted by Villa Toscana at the St. Regis Hotel. Nevertheless, all pictures and opinions are my own.

We had the most amazing Italian dinner at Villa Toscana. It's probably the best Italian food I've ever had and I'm not saying that lightly .

I've visited Italy many times and had some excellent food there. But this, this was a whole new level of Italian food…

Dinner at Villa Toscana St. Regis Abu Dhabi

Dinner started, as any proper Italian dinner does, with antipasti. Very pretty and very yummy antipasti I might add. The antipasti were accompanied by a refreshing Aperol Spritz.

After the antipasti, we moved on to the first course, which included a delicious chickpea soup, bruschetta, and several dips (ricotta spinach, white radish, and pesto).

Dinner Villa Toscana St. Regis Abu Dhabi

After that, the courses just kept coming, I ate so much that evening…

We had burrata, squid, ravioli with a silky smooth cheesy sauce (my favorite!), lamb, sea bass, and a gorgeous and (most importantly) mouth-watering dessert platter.

Villa Toscana St. Regis Abu Dhabi

I couldn't move a muscle after dinner, everything was absolutely delicious. Plus, the lovely staff treated us like royalty. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Abu Dhabi!

You can find more information about the restaurant and the menu on the website .

Things to see in Abu Dhabi: day 3

Today a visit to Abu Dhabi's playground, Yas Island, is on the itinerary. On Yas Island you can find not one, but three theme parks:

  • Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
  • Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi

Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi

Practical information about the parks, combination tickets and prices.

You can buy a separate ticket to each of the parks. However, if you plan to visit more than one park, discounts are to be had by buying a combination ticket.

For example, a 1 Day Any 2 Parks ticket includes access to two of the three theme parks on Yas Island for 395 AED. I wouldn't recommend visiting more than two parks in one day, as there is so much to do in each of them.

The best thing to do, if you have more time available, is to spend another day (or even two) enjoying the thrills of Yas Island.

Multi-day tickets include additional perks, like free shuttle bus access and discounted prices compared to individual single-day tickets.

A 2-Day Any 2 Parks ticket costs 435 AED. A 3-Day All 3 Parks ticket will set you back 545 AED.

How to get to Yas Island

You can easily get to Yas Island by bus, Bus 190 stops here (this bus departs from Al Wahda bus station).

Alternatively, there is a free shuttle service that runs to and from the parks from Saadiyat Island (and several locations in Dubai, though strangely not from the city center of Abu Dhabi). Read more about the shuttle services here .

Taxi/Uber/Careem

Taxis are another easy way of getting to Yas Island, expect to pay between 70 and 90 AED from downtown and 45 AED from Abu Dhabi airport. You can also easily order an Uber or car via Careem, prices are fairly similar.

Yas Island is about a 30 minutes drive from the heart of downtown Abu Dhabi and about 20 minutes from the airport.

Ferrari World

Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi

Kay from The Awkward Traveller : if you're looking for a bit of adrenaline during your time in Abu Dhabi, you must visit Abu Dhabi's Ferrari World.

Ferrari World is a fun but not overly large theme park, but whatever it lacks in size, it makes up for in World Records!

Currently, Ferrari World holds the Guinness Record for the fastest rollercoaster in the world as well as the world's highest rollercoaster loop.

A large majority of the attractions at Ferrari World revolve around the rollercoasters. But there's more, you can even drive an actual Ferrari around a racetrack!

And while there are a few main big hitters, there are a number of family-friendly options as well, like go-karts and spinning cups (well, wheels) for younger children.

Ferrari World rounds off its attractions with a mini arcade and multiple driving simulation rides. Off the rides, you can relax with one of the shows or at one of the six restaurants.

The park isn't too big, but I recommend wearing comfortable shoes . And maybe a motion sickness pill or two!

Click here to buy a ticket to Ferrari World

Yas Waterworld

Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi

Stuart from  Go Eat Do : Yas Waterworld is an expansive waterpark on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island.

As you’d expect when visiting a waterpark in this sunny part of the world, it makes sense to bring sun cream , sunglasses , and a hat . Of course, you’ll also need your bathing gear and a towel .

Though if you have forgotten anything, stores within the park sell everything you need. There’s a range of food and drink options too.

This theme park has roller coasters, slides, and an opportunity to surf. In total Yas Waterworld has more than 40 different attractions!

There’s a playground geared towards younger visitors, plus adrenalin-boosting rides such as Dawwama, a funnel-like slide that begins with a whooshing drop. The park also conveys the historic importance of pearl diving in the region.

Reserve a cabana if you want to upgrade your experience.

Batman and the Joker

Last but certainly not least, there is Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi. This indoor theme park will instantly transport you into the world of your favorite movie characters.

There are six ‘lands' in total, each with its own main attractions and top things to do. At the heart of the park is the Warner Bros Plaza which connects all other parts of the park.

There is Bedrock where you can meet the Flintstones and Dynamite Gulch where Coyote and Road Runner are (obviously) running around.

At Cartoon Junction Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry and Scooby-Doo can be found and of course, Metropolis is where Superman is doing his thing.

Last but not least, you can step into the Joker's funhouse and meet Batman in Gotham City . Hop on the Riddler's Revolution or one of the other 28 exhilarating rides and enjoy live entertainment the entire family will enjoy.

If you are interested in watching any of the shows, pick up a flyer with an overview of the showtimes at the entrance, so you can plan your day accordingly. The Batman-Joker show is especially entertaining.

There are several themed restaurants and you can shop for a fun souvenir at one of the retail stores.

Abu Dhabi Travel Guide

What isn't appealing about visiting Abu Dhabi right now? The second most populous city in the U.A.E. checks off every box when it comes to appeal. The recent opening of the only Louvre outside of France brought global attention to a dynamic arts and cultural scene that's only growing. As travelers continue to make food a focal point of their trips, Abu Dhabi delivers in spades: its wide-ranging offerings span street food and casual neighborhood gems to award-winning dining experiences. And, as a city consistently ranked as one of the safest in the world, it's a major draw for families and female travelers.

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO ABU DHABI

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but the city often gets overshadowed by it’s much larger and glitzier neighbour Dubai just 1 hour down the road.

Abu Dhabi , however, is a great place to spend a few days as it can often be much cheaper than Dubai , plus there are more and more tourist attractions opening all the time!

It is also a very safe city, and whilst Arabic is the official language, English is spoken widely as there is a very large expat community. I spent almost 4 years living in Abu Dhabi so let me share with you my favourite tourist attractions, restaurants, and hotels in Abu Dhabi!

THINGS TO SEE IN ABU DHABI

Sheikh zayed mosque.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque, also known as The Grand Mosque , is Abu Dhabi’s most famous attraction and for good reason – it is simply stunning!

With its white marble walls, 82 intricately detailed domes and reflective pools in the courtyard, many people believe this to be the most beautiful mosque in the world.

It is also one of the world’s largest mosques (it can fit a staggering 40,000 people inside) and houses the world’s largest carpet and third-largest chandelier (covered in Swarovski crystals)! It cost half a billion USD to build!

As it is a holy place of worship you must dress appropriately. If required, women will be loaned an abaya to cover themselves up with as they must be covered from their wrists to their ankles, as well as have their hair covered.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is open daily from 9 am until 10 pm except on Fridays. Friday is the holy day in Islam so opening times on a Friday are from 4.30 pm-10 pm.  It is free for tourists to visit and it does get pretty busy here so arrive first thing to avoid the crowds as much as possible. At night time it is lit up beautifully so it is also nice to visit just after sunset. You can read my guide on taking great photographs at the mosque here .

Across from Sheikh Zayed Mosque is Wahat al Karama park – head here for a fabulous view of the mosque. There are very few people here even during sunset.

For more information, read our complete guide to visiting the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi !

Desert Safari

No visit to Abu Dhabi is complete without doing a desert safari! The desert is less than an hour away and a desert safari is a really fun adventure. You can do morning or evening safaris, or even an overnight one camping in the desert!

By far the most popular one is the evening safari which usually lasts from 3 pm-9 pm as guests get to watch the sunset in the desert which is really magical. It includes pickup and drop-off, dune bashing, sandboarding, riding a camel, holding a falcon (the national bird of the UAE) and then a BBQ buffet and a belly dancing show at a Bedouin-style camp under the stars in the desert.

It is a really special and exciting experience and you definitely shouldn’t leave Abu Dhabi without experiencing it!

There are many companies that offer very similar desert safaris for a very reasonable price. There are several desert safaris available, including overnight stays and half day tours .

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Even if you are not into museums it is definitely worth it to check out the impressive Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, just a 10-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi. Opened in 2017, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first of it’s kind to open outside France.

The building itself is a masterpiece – the roof is metallic and looks almost like a cosmic dome! Natural light pierces through the latticework and creates a beautiful illusion inside.

The collections here are very impressive and include civilisations all over the world, from ancient times until the present day. They also feature pieces from Monet, da Vinci and Van Gogh.

Make sure to view the opening times before you go. Note Louvre Abu Dhabi is closed on Mondays. Entrance is 63 dirhams ($17).

Gold Cappuccino And Ice Cream At Emirates Palace

Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi’s most iconic hotel. This elaborate and grand hotel is beautiful both on the outside and on the inside, yet it is far too expensive for most people to stay in (the cheapest rooms start at $560 per night!). However, you can visit the Palace for free to have a look around and take in the grandeur and beauty of the floor to ceiling marble and gold.

What’s more, you can head to Le Cafe in the lobby to experience the renowned Palace cappuccino! This cappuccino is sprinkled in 23 karat gold flakes (yes they are real!). If coffee isn’t your thing, try the vanilla and chocolate ice-cream covered in 23 karat gold. I’ve tried both of them and they are equally delicious! The coffee is priced at 60 dirhams and the ice cream at 40 dirhams.

A walk along the Corniche (seafront) is a must when in Abu Dhabi. It stretches for 8km along the coast but the most popular part is around the Corniche Beach/Family Beach area, just a few minutes walk from Emirates Palace.

The pedestrianized promenade along The Corniche is very elegant and relaxing and there are several restaurants and cafes you can stop in along the way which offer beautiful views of the beachfront.

Yas Island, a 30-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi features a whole host of activities. Ferrari World, Warner Brothers World, Yas Waterworld  – that’s enough theme parks to keep you entertained for a while! Ferrari World  features the world’s fastest rollercoaster that reaches 240km/h (150mph) whereas Warner Brothers World  has the world’s largest indoor theme park.

Additionally, Yas Island features the huge Yas Mall as well as the Formula One circuit. The Formula One takes place each November in Abu Dhabi and is a really fun event! Nearby Yas Marina also offers a nice vibe in the evening with several nightlife options available.

If you want to try driving a race car for yourself, you can even book a Yas 3000 Driving Experience !

Visit The Mangroves

For something a little different and to keep you in shape on your trip to Abu Dhabi head to the Eastern Mangroves for some Stand Up Paddleboarding or kayaking. The natural mangrove forest is really beautiful and home to a variety of marine life.

It is very calm here, certainly a world apart from fast-paced Abu Dhabi! For 2 hours paddleboarding, the price is 140 dirhams per adult. Click here for more info.

If you fancy trying some other water sports whilst you are in Abu Dhabi you can go surfing at Saadiyat Beach or jet skiing at Yas Beach.

Sightseeing Boat Trip

Abu Dhabi is made up of over 200 islands so the best way to see the city is from the water!  Jalboot  does a really great boat sightseeing tour of Abu Dhabi. It covers the best sites of Abu Dhabi, from the striking skyline of downtown Abu Dhabi to Emirates Palace, going past the Grand Mosque and even heading down to Yas Marina.

RESTAURANTS AND DINING

Abu Dhabi is a cosmopolitan city. It has residents from many different countries and its restaurants are a reflection of this. The variety of cuisines available in this city is genuinely impressive!

And from award-winning restaurants to eateries with more modest prices, there is something to suit every tastebud and pocket in Abu Dhabi! As a general rule of thumb, restaurants specialising in Arabic food will often be cheaper than restaurants serving international cuisine.

Fine Dining

Many of Abu Dhabi’s finest and expensive restaurants can actually be found inside its top hotels. Some of these restaurants that I really recommend include:

  • Italian: Villa Toscana  (located inside Hotel St Regis Abu Dhabi )
  • Indian:  Angar (located inside Yas Hotel )
  • Japanese: Zuma – located on Al Maryah Island
  • Steakhouse: BOA Steakhouse  – located at Eastern Mangroves

The restaurants listed above are all on the pricey side but are perfect for a special occasion.

Moderately Price Dining

More reasonably priced restaurants that I also love include:

  • Italian:  Spaccanapoli (located inside Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi )
  • Seafood: Aquarium (located on Yas Marina)
  • Local Emirati cuisine: Al Fanar  (located inside Yas Mall)

WHERE TO STAY

The great thing about Abu Dhabi is that there are so many hotels to choose from. Before you start looking at hotels though, decide your budget. Hotel prices vary greatly in Abu Dhabi, although you can get some good deals.

You’ll also want to check on the map which area you would like to stay in. Abu Dhabi is quite a spaced out city without a real main centre as new areas are constantly being built.

Neighborhoods

Think would you prefer to stay on trendy Yas Island (such as the unique and very reasonably priced Yas Hotel ), or do you want a view of the Grand Mosque (at the more expensive Shangri-la  and Ritz Carlton Hotels).

Or perhaps you want to be downtown near the Corniche where there is a vast choice of hotels to choose from, or you would prefer something a little further away on Saadiyat Island (such as St Regis ) – although generally, the most expensive hotels are on Saadiyat Island.

Some of Best Places To Stay

  • Jumeirah at Etihad Towers Hotel
  • Emirates Palace Hotel
  • Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri

Desert Hotels

Alternatively, if you fancy a change of scenery you can stay in one of Abu Dhabi’s desert hotels. This is where you can really experience the uninterrupted beauty and tranquillity of the desert. Qasr al Sarab is the ultimate in luxury, or for a much more affordable option, head to Tilal Liwa .

Both are a couple of hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi into the desert and you will need a car to get to both of these hotels as there is no public transport. Staying in one of these desert hotels is highly recommended as it really gives you a chance to relax and recharge your batteries.

WHEN TO VISIT

The cooler months from October until April is the perfect time to visit Abu Dhabi. This is when the weather is at it’s most pleasant and when the majority of tourists visit Abu Dhabi.

From May to September it is unpleasantly hot as temperatures reach over 40 degrees Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit) on a daily basis. The UAE is very hot and humid in the summer, and despite the excellent aircon, it is very difficult to withstand the outside temperatures.

Locals and residents even avoid being outside as much as possible during this time. Hotel prices though are much cheaper as there are a lot fewer people around.

GETTING AROUND AND TRANSPORTATION

Taxis are very reasonably priced in Abu Dhabi. They are always available and are considerably quicker than the buses so this is the preferred mode of transport for most people here.

Abu Dhabi taxis are usually grey in colour and they all have CCTV inside them for safety and security reasons. Some even have wifi inside them too!

Currently, taxis in Abu Dhabi only take cash so make sure you have enough for the journey.

Renting A Car

Renting a car in Abu Dhabi is fairly reasonably priced. There are many car hire companies available at the airport, and you can often hire cars for around 100 dirhams per day (around $25).

However, beware there are many speed cameras in UAE and there is no longer a speed buffer! Therefore, if the road sign says 120 km/h you cannot go faster than this. Even if you are doing 121 km/h you will get a fine if caught by the speed cameras!

Abu Dhabi has also just recently introduced toll gates across 4 of the bridges in Abu Dhabi. Therefore, be aware of this and how you have to pay.

Even for experienced drivers, driving in the UAE can sometimes be challenging. Just keep very alert of the other drivers and you will be fine!

HOW TO GET TO GET THERE

Airport and airlines.

Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is located 30 km from downtown Abu Dhabi. To drive to the Corniche takes just over 30 minutes, but to drive to Sheikh Zayed Mosque or Yas Island it will take around only 15 minutes.

Etihad Airways is the national carrier of the UAE with the airline’s hub being located in Abu Dhabi. Most people flying into Abu Dhabi will, therefore, arrive with Etihad Airways. But many other international airlines fly into Abu Dhabi too such as British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Alitalia, Air France, Lufthansa and KLM.

Getting To Dubai From Abu Dhabi

From Abu Dhabi, it is a 1-hour drive to Dubai . A taxi will cost around 200 dirhams ($50).

Alternatively, you can take the coach for 25 dirhams ($7) from Abu Dhabi bus station. Just look for the number 100/101 red bus going to either Ibn Battuta or Al Ghubaiba. Buses leave every 20 minutes.

ABU DHABI WRAP UP

Over recent years Abu Dhabi has become very popular as a tourist destination. With many nationalities granted a free visa on arrival, more and more people are also using it as a stopover for a few days before continuing their journey elsewhere.

The modern buildings and attractions constantly popping up make a nice contrast to the Arabian traditions that are firmly rooted in this region. With year-round sunshine and it being named the world’s safest city in 2019, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be planning your trip to Abu Dhabi!

Abu Dhabi travel guide

Abu dhabi tourism | abu dhabi guide, you're going to love abu dhabi.

From the serenity of the mangroves to the bustling city center, from the waterfront to the glittering skyscrapers, Abu Dhabi offers visitors an experience like no other.

trip abu dhabi

The capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi lies on an island that extends into the west coast of the Persian Gulf. What was once a pearling village has evolved into a political and financial center. Abu Dhabi is home to a multicultural society with a welcoming spirit, and a dining scene that will thrill foodies with its diversity.

Abu Dhabi is multifaceted: stroll through one of more than 2,000 parks and green spaces, enjoy the beach life, take a drive on a Formula One track, and haggle for bargains at a souk. There's so much to do that you'll find yourself planning your next trip just to catch up on all that you couldn't fit into one visit.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Abu Dhabi

1. impressive architecture.

Abu Dhabi is a place of spectacular buildings, from the sleek geometry of Etihad Towers, the Baynunah Tower, and other gleaming skyscrapers to the graceful beauty of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center. Capital Gate, an astonishing skyscraper next to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, is the world's tallest leaning building, designed with an 18-degree incline.

2. Waterfront Life and Outdoor Adventure

There are many ways to experience the waterfront in Abu Dhabi, from a leisurely ferry ride to Zaya Nurai Island or one of the other islands to trying out some of the many watersports on offer. You can lounge on Corniche Beach, cheer on a camel race, go dune bashing on an ATV, and more.

3. Experience Arabic Culture

There are museums and exhibitions to visit, and tours you can take, but perhaps the best way to experience traditional Arabian culture is in the sheesha (hookah) cafes or haggling for bargains in a souk or open air market. In nearby Al Ain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the world's oldest permanent settlement, you can stay in traditional Emirati style at the Arabian Nights Village.

4. Stellar Dining

Arabic food is found everywhere, naturally, from casual to fine dining, along with many South Asian and European restaurants. If you love pork, bear in mind that it is sold only to non-Muslims in specified places, and you can expect the same type of regulation with alcohol.

5. Shopaholics Paradise

You could call shopping a national sport in Abu Dhabi, with virtually everything on offer from the latest international designers in ultra-modern shopping malls to traditionally hand-loomed carpets in the Carpet Souk, as well as jewelry, antiques and more. Note that during certain Muslim holidays, notably Ramadan, shop hours may be different than at other times of the year.

What to do in Abu Dhabi

1. sheikh zayed mosque: white beacon.

The largest in the country, this dazzling mosque sits in pristine Islamic gardens. Covered in the purest white marble and boasting the tallest dome for a mosque in the world, the interior is both dwarfing and extravagantly detailed, inlaid with floral design. Other statistics are equally stunning, with a courtyard surrounded by 80 marble domes upheld by over a hundred columns, and a capacity of 41,000 worshippers.

2. Heritage Village: Step into the Past

Before the Emirati people came upon valuable stores of oil beneath the desert, they lived a nomadic life on those lands. Visit the Heritage Village for a glimpse of their traditional lifestyle. Learn about how the oasis would provide perfect living conditions for constructing homes, providing water to communities and camels, and developing irrigation lines, among other things. From the spice shops to the craftsmen's workshops, this is quite an immersive experience.

3. Corniche Beach: Wonderful Waterside

The greatest place to let off steam in this sunny climate is along the fun-filled Corniche by the gulf. Walk or bike along the promenade, and soak up the rays between stops at gorgeous gardens or tasty cafés. At the western end of the Corniche, tourists will find the enormous Marina Mall shopping complex and the extravagant, five-star Emirates Palace Hotel -- originally built for the Sheikh. Don't miss the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, with unforgettable views from the observation deck.

4. Yas Island: Yaaaaaaass!

Take a break from the skycraper metropolis of downtown Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, a breezy recreation zone full of entertainment. Yas Mall houses endless shopping opportunities, while Yas Waterworld offers refreshing fun for the whole family. Formula One races also play out on this island at the Marina Circuit. Nearby, the Ferrari World amusement park is a wild ride, and surely one of the most unique theme parks in the world.

5. Liwa: In a Sea of Sand

Abu Dhabi rises suddenly out of the Arabian Desert in an incredible display of contemporary development, but it is still just a short drive from the serenity of the sand dunes. Those surrounding the Liwa Oasis, the long-time birthplace of the Royal Family, are the largest dunes in the world. Tourists can get their hearts pumping with drag races on this otherworldly terrain, or visit the refuge of the oasis to understand the reality of life in the desert.

Before visiting, we were absolutely wrong about seeing Abu Dhabi as a pure business city or the less fun equivalent of Dubai. You can easily spend several days in Abu Dhabi but in this post, I’ll share with you a fun 2-day itinerary in Abu Dhabi ,  including an epic desert safari!

In the 70s-80s, Abu Dhabi was nothing more than a larger village living from pearl fishing . In the 90s, the by-then capital of UAE was still nothing more than a larger town with a few 10-level buildings. By now, Abu Dhabi is a large, innovative metropolis and the country’s business hub and political heart.

If you think that as a traveller or tourist, you can only have fun in Dubai (located 1 hour and a half drive from Abu Dhabi), you couldn’t be more wrong! In recent years, Abu Dhabi decked itself out with record-breaking attractions and activities that make it worth staying more than 48 hours in Abu Dhabi.

All attractions of Abu Dhabi are aimed at achieving a certain superlative: the fastest roller coaster in the world, a monument that is one of the most visited ones in the world, the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world… but you can still experience the traditional side of Abu Dhabi in the desert and in attractions like the Heritage Village and Qasr Al Hosn.

Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi

abu dhabi itinerary bab al qasr

If you are wondering where to stay in Abu Dhabi, you should first determine the goal of your Abu Dhabi trip.

Do you want relaxing beach holidays or be active and make the most out of your time in Abu Dhabi? The Corniche area is perfect for those who want to be close to the main attractions of Abu Dhabi. If you want to spend more relaxing holidays in Abu Dhabi, have a look at the hotels in Yas island or Saadiyat island.

My personal recommendation to unite the best of the 2 worlds: the Bab Al Qasr Hotel *****

The Bab Al Qasr hotel ***** is located in the Abu Dhabi Corniche area (the best area) and faces the legendary Emirates Palace and the Presidential Palace. Thus, depending on your room, you’ll enjoy literally majestic views!

Book here your room at the Bab Al Qasr Hotel *****

Besides the ideal location, I loved the fabulous hotel lobby (feeling like a royal!) with its sweet treats and the private beach. The rooms are very spacious and the service of the dedicated staff is unparalleled.

To me, the Bab Al Qasr Hotel ***** is a perfect oasis of peace to explore exciting Abu Dhabi and combine the trip with some lazy hours at the hotel’s private beach. On top, you get, in my opinion, extremely good value for your money when considering that this is a 5* hotel located just in front of the Emirates Palace, another major Abu Dhabi attraction.

Abu Dhabi Itinerary – Day 1

Morning: visit the sheikh zayed grand mosque.

abu dhabi itinerary sheikh zayed grand mosque detail

Doesn’t matter whether you are going to spend 48 hours in Abu Dhabi, a week, or only 24 hours… a visit to the breathtaking Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an absolute must-do!

The bright white mosque is not only considered as being one of the most beautiful mosques in the world but on top, according to TripAdvisor, it is the most visited landmark in the world after the Vatican. With its area equivalent to 4 football fields, it is the third-largest mosque in the world.

Please make sure to dress respectfully – please visit the official website for more info.

Photography is allowed, but it’s restricted to official photo spots – please don’t wander around trying to capture the mosque from other locations. The guards will get really annoyed with you.

These facts about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque are further reasons to visit this epic landmark:

  • It took 12 years to complete the mosque
  • The prayer hall has the largest handknit carpet in the world which was achieved by 1200 workers
  • The chandeliers are made with Swarovski crystals and are some of the largest in the world
  • Count up to 82 domes
  • The light system at night varies according to the moon phase

abu dhabi itinerary sheikh zayed grand mosque

Opening times of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque:

9.00 am – 10.00 pm from Saturday until Thursd ay and on Sundays, and 4:30 pm – 10:00 pm on Fridays

During Ramadan, consider that the opening times change to 9.00 am – 2.00 pm from Sunday until Thursday, and the mosque is completely closed on Fridays.

I recommend visiting as early or as late as possible in order to avoid the crowds.

Entrance fee of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque:

The entry fee of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is FREE and you can even sign up for a free tour every hour. I didn’t do the tour, but I certainly regret it because it takes you to parts of the building that most visitors cannot access.

Calculate 1-2 hours for your visit and there are many restaurants (even a major fast-food restaurant) that sell drinks and food.

Dress Code:

Dress appropriately when visiting the mosque. That means long trousers and covered shoulders for men and covered hair, legs, and arms for the ladies. Ladies can rent abayas for free at the entrance of the mosque.

The staff of the Mosque is really strict on the fact that everything is covered. I got reprimanded several times that I should cover  my hair.

How to get to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque:

I went by car and you can enter the parking at gate 6.

  • How to get to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque by public transport:

By public transport, from the Al Wahda Bus Terminal. Plan here your journey.

  • How to get to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque from Dubai:

Take a bus from Dubai to the Abu Dhabi Al Wahda Bus terminal. From here, you can take a local bus to the Mosque.

The route between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is covered by the E100 departing from the Dubai Al Ghubaiba Bus station and line E101 departing from the Ibn Battuta Bus Station.

Before lunchtime: ride the fastest roller coaster in Ferrari World

abu dhabi itinerary ferrari world

After enjoying a cultural matinée at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, you are more than ready for an action-loaded, speed activity! Did you know that Abu Dhabi is home to the fastest rollercoaster in the world? The rollercoaster is part of Ferrari world, one of the major attractions in Abu Dhabi.

Located on Yas Island, Ferrari World is a theme park that comes with several Italian dining options and there are 37 exciting rides to do. Among the most popular roller coasters figures the world-famous Formula Rossa roller coaster and the Racing Aces .

The Formula Rossa is the fastest rollercoaster in the world, and the Racing Aces boasts the highest roller coaster loop in the world. The Formula Rossa roller coaster will speed you up to 240 km/h in less than 5 seconds. Thus, if you are looking for an adrenaline kick, you’ll find it most surely at Ferrari World.

Other activities in Ferrari world are:

  • Kart racing
  • Turbo Track with its zero-gravity fall
  • Junior Grand Prix for kids
  • Ferrari Gallery showcasing the evolution of the Ferrari design
  • Racing simulators for kids and adults

Ferrari World holds something for travellers of any age . It remains a theme park though, just that you can spot the iconic horse brand everywhere. You can easily spend an entire day at Ferrari World, but if you have only limited time, make sure to take a ride on Racing Aces and Formula Rossa .

As there are excellent dining opportunities in Ferrari World, you can opt for lunch in the theme park. On top, some of the park is indoor, thus the perfect place to escape the heat in summer.

Opening Times Ferrari World:

11.00 am – 8.00 pm

Opening times are subject to change, especially during Ramadan.

Afternoon desert safari with barbecue and sandboarding

abu dhabi desert

After lunch, it is time to go into the wild with a desert safari . Indeed, it would be a pity if you’d only stay in the city of Abu Dhabi when you have in its close surroundings some of the most beautiful desert landscapes. In my eyes, the desert is pure magic and on top, it has an important cultural value in the UAE .

A desert safari that is much more than a plain safari! When you book a desert safari , in most cases, the following activities are included:

  • Dune bashing with a 4WD
  • Sandboarding
  • Camel riding
  • A delicious traditional barbecue in a traditional desert camp
  • A henna painting and clothing workshop
  • Belly dancers and so much more

In short, a desert safari includes everything it takes to spend an unforgettable afternoon away from the city!

abu dhabi itinerary desert

I booked my desert safari with GetYourGuide and everything went very smoothly. After receiving the booking confirmation on my phone with detailed instructions, I was in touch with our guide for the tour. They pick and drop you in a cool 4WD at your hotel, thus it couldn’t be more convenient.

As the desert camps are not accessible to the public and as dune bashing is rather risky if you don’t have excellent driving skills, I recommend booking your tour with GetYourGuide in order to travel worry-free. The tour costs €84 and guarantees you up to 6 h of great fun and entertainment.

Abu Dhabi Itinerary – Day 2

Morning: louvre abu dhabi.

abu dhabi louvre

Even if you are not an art buff, you’ll enjoy a visit to the Louvre in Abu Dhabi. Why? Because it’s one of the most impressive buildings in the Middle East from an architectural point of view.

Located in the heart of the cultural district Saadiyat , the Louvre Abu Dhabi is home to artworks of great historical and cultural value. Some of them have been loaned by prestigious French museums such as the Centre Pompidou, the Musée du Louvre or the Musée d’Orsay.

Book your Louvre tickets here!

The exposed artworks come from several regions, multiple periods and cultures. The visitor is thus prompted to reflect on what is art and its universality.

However, the building itself is a masterpiece! Bright white and designed by Jean Nouvel, the landmark was inspired by the traditional Arabian water irrigation system, the falaj . This ancient tradition was used to bring water from the underground to the surface.

abu dhabi itinerary louvre

This means that water is a key component of the entire museum as it is part of the concept of the Louvre. It runs throughout the museum.

Another highlight of the construction by Jean Nouvel is the roof inspired by interlaced palm trees. If you’ll stand below it, you’ll enjoy a play of light that’s an artwork in itself.

Qasr Al Hosn: the oldest building in Abu Dhabi

abu dhabi itinerary qasr al hosn

Did you know that Abu Dhabi was until the 70s-80s just a small fishing village? If you want to travel back in time and learn more about the extraordinary ascent of Abu Dhabi, I recommend visiting Qasr al Hosn, the oldest building in Abu Dhabi.

Built in 1790, the building was used to control the coast and land from its watchtower. Already by then, the Emirates was a trading hub. Throughout history, the building had several functions: the seat of the ruling family, a national archive, the seat of the government, …

Converted into a museum, Qasr Al Hosn depicts the spectacular journey from a town reliant on fishing and the pearl industry to one of the most innovative metropolis in the world. The exposed artifacts include weapons, paintings and more. Some of them date back to 6000 BC!

This is a must-do for any Abu Dhabi 2 days itinerary!

Optional: Heritage Village Abu Dhabi

abu dhabi itinerary heritage village

If you enjoy history and want to dive in it, I recommend having a look at the Heritage village. Located close to the Emirates Palace, the Heritage Village is a great place to enjoy the traditional Bedouin lifestyle that characterized Abu Dhabi before it became a global metropolis.

Including a souk, a mosque, and several workshops, the visitor is invited to learn the skills of the craftsmen at the Heritage Village. Be ready to tune your weaving, spinning and pottery skills!

The entrance to the village is free and it’s worth a visit alone due to the lovely spice shop! It’s definitely a highlight of any Abu Dhabi itinerary.

Afternoon: gold cappuccino at the Emirates Palace

abu dhabi itinerary emirates palace

After visiting the Abu Dhabi of the pre-oil era, let’s dive into the fancy, shiny and abundant part of the town. The luxurious and wealth of Abu Dhabi couldn’t be better demonstrated than by the imposing Emirates Palace and its 114 domes, 1002 crystal chandeliers and 1,3 km of private beach!

The horizontal equivalent of the Burj Al Khalifa in Dubai sets new superlatives when it comes to hotels You don’t have to check-in the hotel in order to get a glimpse of the Emirates Palace. Nowadays the hotel works as a cultural hub to the city and is one of the main attractions of Abu Dhabi.

I recommend wandering through the majestic ( I am running out of words to describe the superlatives of  the Emirates Palace ) lobby and check out the different foyers. If you don’t have the budget for a 150 € steak or to book a room at the Emirates Palace, but you still want to have a royal moment, I recommend enjoying the world-famous Palace Cappuccino sprinkled with 24 real gold flakes . It comes at the glitzy price of 60 AED (= +/- 15 €).

If you have the budget, go on a splurge and stay in one of the sublime rooms. Even their standard room feels like a royal suite! I was told by locals that the hotel has several special offers throughout the year which makes this VIP experience affordable to a larger public.

Dress Code: No shorts, no tank tops!

Even if you only have one days in Abu Dhabi, a visit to the Emirates Palace is a must and one of the most epic places to go in Abu Dhabi.

abu dhabi itinerary etihad tower

After going wide with the Emirates Palace, it’s about time to go really high with the Observation Deck at 300 – Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Are you wondering what to see in Abu Dhabi in 2 days? Well, the Observation deck at 300 – Jumeirah at Etihad Towers is an absolute must-do!

The highest vantage point of the UAE capital is located at 300 m above the ground and will provide you with exceptional views over the Corniche, Abu Dhabi, and the whole Arabian Gulf.

On the same Observation Deck at 300 – Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, you can enjoy a high tea or one of the bar’s signature mocktails. High noon tea starts last from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm and costs 250 AED (= +/- 62 €).

A credit voucher is usually attached to the entrance fee that you can redeem during your visit.

International Street Food Night in Abu Dhabi

After splurging throughout the day, are you ready for a real street experience? Why not spend a night out in Abu Dhabi’s Al-Danah neighborhood and enjoy street food from all over the world?

Indeed, Abu Dhabi has an extremely large percentage of expats and all of them brought their gastronomical highlights with them. Thus, be ready to enjoy seafood as in Asia, pizzas in the best Italian style, and fancy Lebanese bars. Food bar hopping is one of the most fun things to do in Abu Dhabi at night.

My favorite place to enjoy a lively dining night out was definitely the Al Danah district, especially around Hamdan Street. Not only will you find plenty of restaurants but also cinemas, shopping centers and more.

Some of the best places to dine out in Al Danah and enjoy cool street food are:

  • Pinoy Street Food Hamdan Street – your destination in Abu Dhabi for delicious Filipino doos!
  • Anand al Saeed – a reliable option for Indian food
  • Lazeez – quite simply, the best biryani in Abu Dhabi!
  • Restaurant Beijing – a long-running and tasty Chinese restaurant

So there you are, the best 2-day Abu Dhabi itinerary! The Emirati capital offers many things to do for a layover or longer stay, so watch this space for more Abu Dhabi articles very soon!

Why Go To Abu Dhabi

Compared to Dubai , Abu Dhabi may seem a bit, well, boring. The capital of the United Arab Emirates has a long way to go to compete with all the hype, glitz and glam of its northeast neighbor. But that doesn't seem to faze the folks in Abu Dhabi; the UAE's largest emirate is already sitting on piles of oil money, so there's no rush for it to compete in the tourism market. However, this doesn't mean that there's nothing here for visitors. Before you write off Abu Dhabi as a humdrum, conservative place, consider this: The city's slower growth has allowed it to preserve more of its history and culture, which you can experience on a visit to Heritage Village or the impressive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . And where Dubai is lacking in natural beauty, Abu Dhabi excels with a mix of rolling sand dunes, verdant oases , expansive beaches and towering mountains .

The city of Abu Dhabi bustles with activity, boasting a mélange of shopping centers, gourmet restaurants, luxury hotels and cutting-edge real estate developments — in all, an excellent portrait of the modern-day UAE. But there's much more to Abu Dhabi than the city. In fact, the emirate (also named Abu Dhabi) comprises most of the country's land area. If you can, leave Abu Dhabi city behind and sample a more authentic UAE with a visit to the ancient Al Jahili Fort in the eastern city of Al Ain, a camel trek across the Empty Quarter desert in the southern part of the emirate, or a lesson in the ancient art of falconry in the Abu Dhabi city suburbs. You can see skyscrapers and go shopping anywhere — it's the inclusion of the more traditional experiences that will make your visit to the UAE memorable.

Abu Dhabi Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Abu Dhabi is between April and May or from September to October. The spring and fall shoulder seasons yield pleasant weather, manageable crowds and reasonable hotel rates. For the best weather — not too hot and not to humid — you'll want to visit in the wintertime (December through March). However, this is Abu Dhabi's peak season, with business travelers snagging all the city's cabs and tourists flocking to the beach. If you're looking for the best prices, summer is your season: The city is practically free of tourists, but triple-digit temperatures and smothering humidity will make any time spent outdoors feel gruesome.

Weather in Abu Dhabi

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

  • There's more than Abu Dhabi city If you have the time, get out of town. You'll find notable historic, cultural and natural sights in areas around Al Ain and Al Gharbia.
  • Dress to impress The majority of Abu Dhabi's residents adhere to more conservative Islamic values. Respect their customs by leaving any tight or revealing clothes at home.
  • Perfect your timing Arabs generally don't sit down to dinner until 10 p.m. If you aren't willing to adjust your schedule, you'll end up eating alone or surrounded by tourists.

How to Save Money in Abu Dhabi

  • Get ready to sweat The summer season's triple-digit temperatures drive away the tourists and conventioneers. But if you can stand the heat, you'll find hotel rooms advertised at half their normal rates.
  • Have a go at haggling It won't work in the shopping malls, but polite negotiation can often lower the cost of items on sale at souks (traditional markets). Offer half the advertised price and try to meet the seller in the middle — but be prepared to walk away.
  • Get schooled Most of Abu Dhabi's historic and cultural attractions do not charge admission, meaning that you can learn a lot about the emirate on a shoestring budget.

Culture & Customs

Occupying more than 80 percent of the United Arab Emirates' total area, Abu Dhabi is the largest of the country's seven emirates and the capital of the UAE. Abu Dhabi is the name of both the emirate and its primary city, which is located on a T-shaped island along the emirate's western coast. Abu Dhabi rocketed to its standing as one of the wealthiest cities on the planet in 1958 while under British command. Today, each emirate is governed by its own sheikh (chief) who is entirely sovereign in his respective territory. However, similarly to the United States, the UAE is overseen by a federal government with the sheikh of Abu Dhabi (currently Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan) acting as president.

The UAE is an Islamic nation, so visitors can expect to encounter common religious practices, including prayer sessions (five times a day) and the observance of the Muslim holy day (every Friday). Many shops, restaurants and attractions close on Fridays, though businesses continue to operate during Ramadan, the Islamic holy month during which Muslims fast during the day. If your visit coincides with Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking and smoking in public.

Modest dress is paramount to Emirati culture. You can expect to see men and women dressed in traditional kanduras (long, shirt-like robes worn by men) and abayas (loose black robes worn by women). Most locals also keep their heads covered — men wear white or red-checkered headdresses known as ghutra , while women wear headscarves called sheylas or long veils known as burkas . Although female tourists are not expected to keep their heads covered in public, headscarves are required when visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . Also, visitors should avoid wearing tight or revealing clothing (though modern swimsuits are acceptable on the beach ) and avoid engaging in public displays of affection, such as hand-holding or kissing.

The official language of Abu Dhabi and the UAE is Arabic, but English is widely spoken here. As far as money goes, Emiratis conduct business in UAE dirhams (AED): 1 AED is roughly equal to $0.27 USD. Although credit cards are widely accepted, you'll want to have cash on hand when visiting Abu Dhabi's traditional souks (markets); ATM machines are not hard to find in Abu Dhabi city. Also, don't be afraid to try your hand at polite haggling in souks — try proposing half the desired amount and seeing if you and the vendor can meet you in the middle.

What to Eat

You'll find all types of cuisine in Abu Dhabi — the city's rise in popularity among tourists has prompted the arrival of everything from Korean fare to Russian specialties. But you would be remiss if you left the UAE without sampling some local staples.

Emirati cuisine is influenced by the country's location: The UAE's seat on the Persian Gulf prompts a heavy reliance on fish, and Middle Eastern spices like saffron, cinnamon, cardamom and turmeric are featured prominently. Other popular ingredients include chick peas, rice, yogurt and meats like chicken and goat. Also, don't be surprised to see camel on the menu, though "ships of the desert" are valued more for their milk than their meat. Some dishes worth sampling include Al Majboos (spiced meat boiled with dried limes and saffron rice) and Al Madrooba (salted fish blended with spices and nuts in a thick sauce and served over white rice).

Although it can be difficult to find traditional Emirati fare in more touristy areas, you'll find several restaurants in Abu Dhabi city's Al Mina district dishing out local cuisine — try Al Arish near the fish market. Or for a more upscale UAE dining experience, head to Mezlai in the Emirates Palace ; this restaurant was the first high-end restaurant in Abu Dhabi to specialize in local cuisine. Of course, no dinner would be complete without dessert. Many Emirati sweets shine the spotlight on the country's favorite fruit: dates. Alongside your Gah-wa (strong Arabic coffee), order a plate of ligamat (deep fried batter — similar to doughnut holes — drizzled with date syrup) or bethitha (semolina combined with crushed dates, butter and cardamom).

When planning for dinner on the town, keep in mind that Emiratis eat later than Americans; generally, locals will sit down to dinner around 10 p.m. or later. Also, you should feel free to leave behind a 10 to 15 percent tip, though gratuity is typically factored into the bill.

Despite its location, Abu Dhabi is a very safe place to visit; the UAE does not get involved with conflicts taking place in other parts of the Middle East. But that doesn't mean you should completely let your guard down — make sure to keep a close eye on your valuables, especially in crowded areas. Meanwhile, women traveling to Abu Dhabi should feel safe exploring on their own, but note that Emirati men have been known to stare (most likely out of curiosity than disrespect).

Like in any big city, you should keep an eye on your valuables when exploring Abu Dhabi. This is also true for the souks, as heavy crowds offer a convenient veil for petty crime.

Also, make sure that you're drinking plenty of water and applying sunscreen regularly. Even if you don't plan on staying outside for long, the sun's rays are powerful here; failing to hydrate and take care of your skin can lead to a nasty case of heat stroke or sunburn.

Getting Around Abu Dhabi

The best way to get around Abu Dhabi is by car, especially if you plan on spending a lot of time outside of Abu Dhabi city. The emirate's major highways are easy to navigate, although maintenance efforts can cause construction-related traffic. However, if you intend to spend the majority of your vacation in and around Abu Dhabi city, you'll fare just fine with taxis and the public bus system. Cabs are a relatively affordable means of transit, and you can easily flag them from the street. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport operates a fairly extensive bus network within Abu Dhabi city and to and around other parts of the emirate, including Al Ain and parts of Al Gharbia. To help you find your way around, you can rely on interactive map services provided by DARB.ae , which can help you plot your car and bus routes. Walking is also an option, but you'll need to take precautions to ward off heat stroke (especially during the summer months).

More than 50 airlines service Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), which sits about 20 miles east of Abu Dhabi city on the mainland near the bridge to Yas Island. You can rent a car at the airport, or you can take a taxi — you should expect to pay around 70 to 80 AED (roughly $19 to $22 USD) to get from the airport to Abu Dhabi city.

Abu Dhabi also features several smaller airports servicing destinations within the emirate and the UAE. Located in Abu Dhabi city is the Al Bateen Executive Airport (AZI), which services private jets. Travelers can also fly into Al Ain International Airport (AAN), though this much smaller airport doesn't have nearly the capacity of Abu Dhabi International. Meanwhile, both Sir Bani Yas and Dalma islands feature their own airports to accommodate flights from within the UAE.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Americans visiting the United Arab Emirates must have an official U.S. passport that is valid for at least six months following their arrival date. Those staying for fewer than 30 days must obtain tourist visas, which are available for free at the Abu Dhabi International Airport and all other ports of entry. For visits exceeding 30 days, travelers must obtain a visa prior to departure. Americans who intend to leave the UAE by land will have to pay a 20 AED (roughly $5.50 USD) exit fee, payable only in local currency. For more information, visit the U.S. State Department website .

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world. It features 82 domes and more than 1,000 columns.

The Middle East has grown to be one of the most important connecting points between the East and the West. There are several airlines operate flights from the US to multiple points worldwide, including Etihad Airways . The airline offers flights to over 70 destinations from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) . The airline an attractive free stopover package for passengers who want to explore Abu Dhabi before proceeding to their final destinations. Let’s take a look at how you can use it.

Etihad’s new stopover package

Booking a stopover in a city like Abu Dhabi is a great way to break up a long journey and a unique opportunity to explore a new city before proceeding to your final destination. Some airlines partner with hotels to offer customers free accommodation and airport transfers, while other airlines let you bear all the costs yourself. Nonetheless, it is a much cheaper option than booking a separate trip to the same city.

Etihad previously offered customers stopping over in Abu Dhabi a complimentary hotel stay , but it has enhanced the program to offer a more comprehensive stopover package. Earlier this month, Etihad, together with the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, announced the launch of Abu Dhabi Stopover . Through the program, all guests flying through the Emirati capital are invited to turn their free stopover hotel stay into the ultimate holiday.

When booking a flight with Etihad, passengers now have the option to add a stopover and select complimentary hotel access as part of the online booking process. Passengers can choose from a range of premium hotels for one or two nights.

Stopover packages are only available for booking on Etihad’s website. After booking a flight, customers are required to enter their booking reference or ticket number and last name on the website. After that, you can proceed to check hotel availability and view discounts for various activities.

Free hotel access for a few nights

The Stopover Accommodation service is only available for round-trip tickets with both flights on the same itinerary. You can use the complimentary hotel access only once, either on the outbound or inbound flight. Hotel reservations must be made at least 72 hours before arriving in Abu Dhabi.

All hotel reservations are booked and managed by Etihad Holidays. To access your room, you must present your valid Etihad Airways boarding pass and the hotel booking confirmation received from Etihad Holidays when checking in. Your hotel check-in dates must align with your flight’s arrival date in Abu Dhabi .

The duration of each stopover is capped at 24 hours, with a maximum of four nights available for booking. However, the hotel can charge you for any extra hours. Under the free stopover program, three and four-star hotels are available in standard rooms, but with no additional services like breakfast included. Some of the three and four-star hotels listed on Etihad’s website include:

  • Traders Hotel - Al Maqta (4-star)
  • Aloft Abu Dhabi - City Center (4-star)
  • Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi - City Center (4-star)
  • Ibis Abu Dhabi Gate - Al Maqta (3-star)
  • Centro Capital Centre - City Center (3-star)
  • Premier Inn AUH - Airport hotel (3-star)

Taking advantage of discounts

Abu Dhabi has a diverse landscape with admirable natural and architectural beauty. There are many things to do in the Emirati capital, and while activities are not free of charge, guests stopping over in the city can take advantage of discounts. Your Etihad Airways boarding pass doubles up as the Abu Dhabi pass, offering discounts at various attractions and restaurants.

All Etihad passengers qualify for the discount scheme. You must have traveled on an Etihad-operated flight within the calendar year and must hold a valid boarding pass and photo identification. It is important to note that Etihad boarding passes are valid only for 30 days. Discounts on theme parks and activities include:

  • Airmaniax Yas Mall: Available daily with a 30% discount on Premium Access tickets.
  • Yas Island Theme Park: Available daily with 15% off on entry tickets in Ferrari World, Warner Bros, and Yas Water World theme parks.
  • Husaak Adventures Eastern Mangroves Abu Dhabi: 20% off on guided tours and boat cruises.

Getting around Abu Dhabi

There are many ways to get around Abu Dhabi during your stopover. The cheapest option is the new Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus Service. It is a free service available for both local and international passengers. It conveniently gets you around the city and offers comfortable seating, air conditioning, wheelchair accessibility, and WiFi access.

Where East Meets West: How Can You Book A Free Stopover Hotel In Istanbul?

Turkish Airlines provides passengers with free accommodation in Istanbul.

It operates on eight key routes, connecting Yas Island, Jubail Island, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi city center, and the Grand Canal area. You can also flag down a taxi on the roadside, hop on another city bus, rent a car, take a bike, or board a traditional abra (boat) cruise. Whether in Abu Dhabi for a day or two, the stopover package will help you get the most out of your stay.
