How to Restore a Vintage Trailer

travel trailer restoration supplies

So, you want to adventure in a vintage RV ? You’re not alone; however, restoring a vintage RV trailer can be a costly catastrophe, if you’re not careful. Here’s what you need to know before you buy and restore your vintage ride.

Think Before You Buy

Restoring a vintage trailer can be a lot of work. It has old bones that may take a lot of time, effort, and money to restore. After all, its seen a lot of the world long before you’ve gotten behind the wheel. Before you make the decision to buy and restore, consider the costs.

Ready to buy? Check out our classifieds

Repair Costs

First and foremost, you need to look at your budget. You may find what seems like a good deal on a vintage RV, but how much will it cost to renovate and restore it? How much money are you willing to put aside for this project?

Before you take the leap into a vintage trailer, carefully examine the camper’s condition . Elements that’ll prove very cost-intensive include:

  • Electrical issues
  • Water damage
  • Structural problems
  • Plumbing and leaks
  • Rancid smells

Restoring trailers with issues such as these is not impossible; however, they can be expensive, time-consuming fixes. Investigate thoroughly to estimate just how much money, time, and effort you’ll need to invest into the vintage RV of your dreams.

Hiring Help

The best cost-saving tip when it comes to renovating a vintage RV? Do the job well the first time. If you experience issues with plumbing, braking systems, wiring, or any of the more complicating fixes, it may be best to hire help to resolve them. Vintage restoration professionals can not only aid in restoration but also customization.

Restoration Tips

Bought your vintage trailer and ready to get restoring? Let’s get you started.

Replace Broken Parts

Before you make your vintage trailer your own with design, make sure to fix what is broken. Check on the electrical system, brakes, propane lines, plumbing, and appliances. Repairing or replacing such things, as previously mentioned, will take the biggest chunk out of your budget; however, finding the parts necessary shouldn’t take too much out of your time.

Original parts for your vintage RV may be tough to find. Places to look are:

  • Vintage RV Shops
  • Local Body Shops
  • Vintage RV Supply Stores Online

If you’re lucky, vintage shops may have the original RV parts or your local shop may be able to replace old parts with newer, compatible parts. If you find yourself unlucky in that search, check for vintage parts online. Shopping for restoration parts online will give you the best and most diverse selection.

Work from the Ground Up

Laying down new flooring is a good place to start your RV renovation. Whether you’re ripping up carpet to put in hardwood or replacing vinyl composition tiling, this job will be one of the most intricate of them all. It’s totally feasible to complete this job on your own if you have the time and handiness. If not, there’s no shame in hiring a professional.

Paint Before You Decorate

A new paint job is not a menial task. Being that it’s easy to make a mess in the process if you’re looking to repaint walls or cabinets, do that first.

Add Some Decor

This Vintage RV is now yours, so make it that way by adding your personal touch and style to the space.

Stick on wallpaper is all the rage because it’s easy to install, cheap, and spices up any space.

Mirrors open up a room, making even the smallest RVs look and feel bigger.

Throw Pillows and Curtains

Your RV should feel like your home on wheels. Adding throw pillows and curtains to fit your design style will give your space that warm, homey feeling.

Don’t ignore the decor possibilities outside of your rig. Sure, a good paint job will spruce up the exterior, but what can you do beyond that? Adding an awning is one way to maintain the vintage feel of your camper or trailer while still showing off some personality. Not to mention, the UV protection it provides.

Clean or Change Your Windows

Before you hit the road, how are your windows? Your RV windows are what you see the world through, so it’s important that they’re in tip-top shape. A lot of vintage RVs have plastic windows that get easily scratched. If your windows are plastic, it may be time to replace them. Glass windows get grimey. If there are no dings or scratches, give them a good cleaning.

Appraise and Insure Your Vintage Rig

In order to buy or sell a vintage recreational vehicle, or a vehicle for that matter, one should contact vintage rv appraisers . An appraisal determines the fair market value of the trailer so that you can negotiate an insurance plan based on its carefully determined worth.

Like with any vehicle, your RV needs insurance. Make sure you’re getting the best trailer insurance with an agreed-upon value policy. Get free RV insurance quotes. Compare policies and prices.

I have a small vintage camper, would would like to restore. Would ,the ski light be a spot , for a small AC unit. Got to have air . I live in Texas.

IJust bought a 1969 camper to restore .it is going to be a task but I am looking forward to it .and I could use any pointers you may offer in restoration tricks.

I have a Lafave Loaf 5868 from Olds trailer company. We would like to restore it but would also like to learn something about it. Can you help?

Whoops that is a Lafave Loafer. Not loaf.

That isn’t a brand we are aware of. You can contact the RV/MH museum to see if they have any record of the brand. There were thousands of brands that didn’t last long and little records exist – this might be one of those…

Have a 1968 Terry trailer. The exterior skin isn’t bad and the framing is good–just need some reinforcement in a couple spots. I’m kinda lost as where to start the restoration process now. Any step by step advice?

Check out the Mobiletec YouTube videos. They do a great job explaining the restoration process.

How can you repair hail damage without replacing the whole skin

Unfortunately there isn’t an easy fix for this. Aluminum stretches when dented and it’s very difficult to flatten. Replace the entire panel or live with its beauty marks.

My 1972 camp trailer need a lots of work need new floor and window are not good …. Not know what to put new floor have to take off floor and put new floor ?

Custom Vintage Trailer Parts

My past experience in molding and casting began as a  designer for Fernbank Science Center Museum in Atlanta in the mid1970s. My forte was molding and casting amphibians, reptiles, and fish. I subsequently taught design for over thirty five years retiring in 2016 from the University of Georgia to devote my time to making parts and restoring trailers.

I started restoring my personal trailers part time since 2002 and in that process needed lenses and parts for my Casita, Wally Byam Holidays, Airstream and other trailers which I simply could not find. I researched the new materials and made the new lenses I needed a flat learning curve but I got there. I began helping other vintage trailer enthusiasts I met at rallies by casting lenses and fixtures for their trailers as well. I have made exterior lights for several trailers including the Spartan and the Vagabond which included the hard to find corn cob lens for the exterior door fixture.

In addition  to the lenses needed on several of the older Bargman lights I have also made replicas of the fixtures as well. The Bargman tail light and tag light fixtures were used on numerous trailer brands including the Shasta, Scotty, and Va Ka Shun-Ette, and rarer Schult, Palace, and Alma trailers.

The Must-Have Accessories and RV Maintenance Tips You Need

June 20, 2024

Taking Care of Your RV: Top Accessories & Maintenance Tips

Whether you're planning weekends at your favorite campground or gearing up to become full-time nomads, RV life is exciting. And yet, you might be wondering about must-have RV accessories and the RV maintenance that will keep your home-on-wheels rolling. Accessories make life on the road more comfortable and functional. Regular maintenance protects your investment in the RV and helps ensure you won't lose precious adventure days to repairs or mechanic visits.

Here's everything you need to know to have the best adventure ever in your RV.

Interior RV Accessories

Space is at a premium inside an RV, so you don't want to buy too much. And yet, having the right items can make your space feel more like home. Whenever possible, look for small items that can serve more than one purpose. Here are five indoor RV accessories you won't want to miss:

  • Power protection: A surge protector is used whenever you plug your RV into a power source. It protects your electronics from voltage surges. An electrical management system is similar, but it also protects your RV from low power or irregular currents.
  • Kitchen items: When it comes to an RV kitchen, less is more. Gather essentials like cutting boards, Tupperware and knives. As for cooking gadgets, aim for multipurpose items, like a multicooker.
  • Temperature monitor: If you're traveling with pets, you may have to leave them alone in the RV sometimes. A pet safety temperature monitor tracks the temperature inside your RV and alerts you if the rig becomes too hot or cold to be safe for pets.
  • Handheld vacuum: You won't need a full vacuum in the RV, but a small handheld is invaluable. If you have kids or pets, consider a two-in-one vacuum and mop.
  • Safety kit: Just like at home, you want to be sure you're safe. Prepare an emergency kit with essentials like a fire extinguisher, flashlights and a first aid kit. Make sure everyone you're traveling with knows where the safety kit is.

Exterior RV Accessories

When you're living in an RV, the outdoors is your living room. Here are five essential outdoor accessories to get you started:

  • Camping chairs: Just like your favorite chair at home, you'll want a comfortable place to kick back when you're on the road. From rocking chairs to recliners, camping chairs come in all shapes and sizes these days. Test them out to find which will be most comfortable for you.
  • Patio mat: An outdoor patio mat is a large area rug for your RV site. It not only makes the space feel more like home, but also reduces the amount of mud and dirt that gets tracked into the RV. Pair a large patio mat with a smaller doormat to wipe shoes on, and your RV will be markedly cleaner.
  • Awning: During rainy days, the RV can become very small. A retractable awning allows you to utilize outdoor space when it's rainy, and it also offers some shade on hot sunny days.
  • Leveling blocks: Whether you're camping in the backwoods or campgrounds, you'll find that not all lots are level. Leveling blocks or leveling jacks make the RV more level and stable.
  • Portable grill: The idea behind an RV is to spend as much time as possible outdoors—so why not cook outside as well? A portable grill allows you to enjoy the great outdoors, while still serving a delicious dinner. Look for one with a griddle top to step up your breakfast game, too.

RV Maintenance Accessories

In addition to the accessories that make life easier on the road, you'll need maintenance accessories to help prevent problems and address them when they pop up. Here are the maintenance items every RV should have:

  • Tool kit: A basic portable tool kit will help you address loose bolts, stuck valves and other common issues.
  • Jumper cables: Jumper cables keep you from getting stuck if someone drains the RV battery. If you're planning lots of off-grid camping, choose a portable battery pack, which lets you jump your battery without another vehicle.
  • Portable air compressor: Low tire pressure can spell trouble for RVs. A portable air compressor allows you to monitor your tire pressure and fill up if needed.
  • Generator: A generator keeps power flowing, especially when you're off the grid. If you're relying on generator power, be sure to have plenty of fuel on hand.
  • Sewer and water hoses: You'll need to hook up to plumbing at each campsite, so have your sewer and water hoses on hand, but stored separately.

Recommended RV Maintenance Schedule

How often you need to perform routine maintenance depends on how you're using your RV. If you're covering lots of miles and frequently changing campsites, you'll need to inspect the RV, check fluid levels and examine the tires more frequently than if you're at a seasonal campsite.

Here's a common RV maintenance schedule . For the best results, follow the maintenance schedule laid out in your RV owner's manual.

Each time you use the RV

Before every trip, follow these maintenance tips:

  • Disconnect all hoses and electrical connections.
  • Check the tire pressure.
  • Secure any loose items inside and outside the RV, including the awning.

Once a month

  • Run the generator for at least an hour.
  • Check the battery water levels. Top off with distilled water if needed.
  • Check fluid levels like oil, coolant and washer fluid.

Once a quarter

  • Check smoke detectors.
  • Clean air conditioner filters.
  • Examine and clean seals around the doors, windows and shower.

Twice a year

  • Rotate tires.
  • Change smoke detector battery.
  • Wax exterior and treat metal surfaces.

Once a year

  • Service brakes.
  • Inspect the roof, or have a certified technician check it for you.
  • Check propane system, looking for any leaks, paint damage or rust.
  • Change the oil.

Enjoying Your RV

Jumping into the RV lifestyle can be a little intimidating at first, but before you know it you'll be having the time of your life. Investing in the right accessories and following a maintenance schedule can keep you on the road and having fun. When in doubt, visit an experienced RV technician to help you manage preventive maintenance or RV repairs.

The Synchrony Car Care credit card can help you pay for RV maintenance and some of those vital accessories, keeping you on the road and where you need to be. Apply now .

Repairs on Calgary's broken feeder main are now complete, but water service not yet restored

Several critical steps still needed before city supply restored to normal.

Repair work on the five additional "hot spots" of the Bearspaw south feeder main is now complete, but the full restoration of Calgary's water supply is still days away.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek shared the news during her Tuesday afternoon update on the developments of the water feeder main, saying the underground repair work on the pipe has now been completed and the city is hopefully on track to have water service restored before the Calgary Stampede.

  • Calgary Stampede will go on as planned amid water crisis

"That date is still a good guideline," said Gondek when asked about the city's previously stated July 5 completion timeline.

Calgary provides update on water main break

"I think it's important to remember that the date that was offered when we first entered into the stage of doing the hot-spot repair ... What we've heard from the team today is that it's possible, if things go according to plan, that we might see an earlier timeline."

But city officials say narrowing down an exact date for all water-related restrictions to be lifted is difficult.

"We have heard some concerns over the last few days about why we're allowing Stampede to move forward given the state of restrictions here," said Michael Thompson, the City of Calgary's general manager of infrastructure services.

"Many businesses and industries rely on the Stampede as a critical event for survival and employment. As we've said before, we are aiming for the earliest possible restoration of service in our original timeline of three to five weeks, which means we could be getting back into service in time for the start of Stampede."

  • Calgary officials aiming for 'low end' of repair timeline after pipes arrive from San Diego

Even though the underground repair work is complete, the next stage of bringing the city's water supply back to full capacity is just getting started.

"We're still days away from regular water flow," Gondek said during Tuesday morning's update. "We're still relying on the smaller facility at Glenmore to provide water throughout the city."

Plus, backfilling the pipe repair sites and repaving the road in areas along 16th Avenue N.W. will begin on Tuesday and continue into Wednesday, so traffic disruptions will remain for some time.

Restoring water is 'delicate work,' more ruptures possible

City of Calgary director of capital priorities and investment, Francois Bouchart, says that because the system has "undergone a major shock," crews need to move carefully.

"We have four steps: filling the feeder main, flushing the feeder main, testing the water and then stabilizing the system," said Bouchart.

"This is delicate work. Each one of these steps carries risk, and it's likely that we could have some setbacks along the way."

Filling the feeder main is the first step in the city's water restoration process. Bouchart says it will take roughly 14 million litres of water to refill the 4.5 kilometre-section of pipe, and this step should take about a day or two.

The next step will involve flushing the pipe with de-chlorinated water and draining it into the Elbow River, and this step should take about one day. Bouchart says this step is a necessary part of making sure this water is safe to drink.

After flushing the pipe, testing the water quality is the next step — Bouchart says microbiology sampling takes about 18 to 20 hours. Should all the tests come back clear, restoring the water can then move to the next step.

However, if the tests show the water isn't safe to consume, the pipe will need to be flushed once again, which he says could add another 24 hours to the process.

Once the water quality meets regulatory standards, water from the feeder main can once again flow throughout the rest of the system. Bouchart says this step has the "highest level of risk" due to the pressure changes, so stabilizing the system will then take another three to five days.

Thompson says that, during the filling stage, the pipe will undergo an increase in pressure, "which increases the risk of stress and potential further breaks."

In order to help manage the risk of additional ruptures, crews will be using acoustic monitors to listen for additional wire breaks, as well as sensors to detect pressure spikes.

The Bearspaw south feeder main, a major pipe transporting roughly 60 per cent of the city's treated water supply, ruptured on June 5. Its rupture led to outdoor water restrictions, with the city also urging residents and businesses to cut back on their own use to maintain enough water for emergencies, such as fighting fires and use in hospitals.

During Tuesday's afternoon briefing, officials continued to urge residents to curb their usage. They say the demand for treated water has been rising once again, and the warm weather is forecasted to stick around.

On Monday, water use for the Calgary area was 476 million litres, which is very close to the 480 million-litre threshold, said Gondek.

  • Calgary's water crisis is a 'wake-up call' for every city in Canada, warn infrastructure experts

What's more, officials say that over a half million litres of water have been picked up at the city's various non-potable river stations.

These river water locations allow Calgarians to access untreated water — intended for residential gardens and for larger industrial uses — and were part of an emergency plan to get water to commercial users amid the ongoing water supply crisis.

On Wednesday, the city is adding a seventh location to retrieve river water, at the Bankside Day Use Area in Fish Creek Park, for access to both commercial and residential uses.

Calgary remains under a state of local emergency, and the Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and citywide fire ban remain in effect.

To date, the city's 311 service has received nearly 9,500 calls related to water use and the fire ban. Bylaw officers have issued 17 tickets for water misuse, and five tickets for violating the fire ban.

CDK cyberattack shuts down auto dealerships across the U.S. Here's what to know.

By Megan Cerullo

Updated on: June 21, 2024 / 5:15 PM EDT / CBS News

CDK Global, a company that provides auto dealerships across the U.S. with software for managing sales and other services, was shut down for a third straight day Friday after cyberattacks crippled the platform.

The outage is disrupting roughly 15,000 car sellers that depend on CDK's dealer management software to run their businesses, including vehicle sales. Some dealership employees have resorted to pen and paper to handle transactions, but said most deals had ground to a halt. CDK has not indicated when its systems will be back up and running, but suggested the outage could last several days.

"We are actively investigating a cyber incident," a CDK spokesperson told CBS News. "Out of an abundance of caution and concern for our customers, we have shut down most of our systems and are working diligently to get everything up and running as quickly as possible."

CDK, which said it had restored some services on Wednesday, told CBS MoneyWatch on Thursday afternoon that its systems were again offline after it suffered another cyberattack.

"Late in the evening of June 19, we experienced an additional cyber incident and proactively shut down most of our systems," a CDK spokesperson said. "In partnership with third-party experts, we are assessing the impact and providing regular updates to our customers. We remain vigilant in our efforts to reinstate our services and get our dealers back to business as usual as quickly as possible."

Calls to a CDK customer support hotline produced a continuous busy signal. But the company's automated recording said the outage could affect dealerships for days, according to  PC Mag . The message told callers, "At this time, we do not have an estimated time frame for resolution and therefore our dealers' systems will not be available likely for several days," the publication reported.

The message also warned callers that "bad actors" posing as CDK support staff were trying to obtain customers' credentials in what are known as phishing attacks, according to The Associated Press .

The number of cyberattacks has been on the rise in the last year, with more than 3,200 data breaches in 2023, a 78% jump from the prior year, according to a new study from data firm  SOAX . Those breaches impacted more than 65 million victims last year, it added.

What is CDK?

CDK's dealer management system, or DMS, lets car vendors operate their business, including handling payroll, inventory, customer relations and office operations. The technology also enables dealers to line car buyers line up with financing and insurance.

On its website, it also touts its cybersecurity capabilities. "CDK Cybersecurity Solutions provide a three-tiered cybersecurity strategy to prevent, protect and respond to cyberattacks so you can defend your dealership," it says.

Brookfield Business Partners, a Toronto-based private equity firm, acquired the company in 2022 in a  deal  valued at more than $8 billion.

When did the cyberattack begin?

The cyberattack on CDK Global began Tuesday evening, Bleeping Computer , a cybersecurity news site, reported Wednesday, taking the 15,000 car dealerships it serves offline.

As mentioned above, CDK said it suffered another cyberattack on Wednesday evening. It is not currently known who, or what group, is behind the cyberattacks.

Mike Stanton, CEO of the National Automobile Dealers Association, said in a statement on Friday that "dealers are very committed to protecting their customer information and are actively seeking information from CDK to determine the nature and scope of the cyber incident so they can respond appropriately."

How are dealerships responding?

Some dealerships appeared to get creative to continue doing business during the outage. Dealership employees posted about the outage on  Reddit  Wednesday, sharing that they were relying on spreadsheets and sticky notes to sell customers small parts and make repairs, but that they weren't making any large transactions.

One employee asked other dealership employees, "How many of you are standing around because your whole shop runs on CDK?" under the heading "CDK down," with users in Wisconsin and Colorado confirming their dealership transaction systems were offline.
