Visit St. James' Park

St. James’ Park is a famous soccer stadium in far northern England. Home to the black-and-white stripes of Newcastle United Football Club, the arena has a seating capacity of 52,400. Cheer on the local side among fervent fans as they challenge their rivals in the Premier League.

The most important game of the year is usually against local rivals Sunderland. Check online for match dates and kick-off times. Capture photos of the iconic stadium as you arrive amid the bustling crowds. Note the statue of Sir Bobby Robson, who managed the team from 1999 to 2004. Listen to the chants and chatter of the fans and purchase a jersey to fit in.

Have a drink at a local pub after the game, when the atmosphere begins to mellow. The area was first used for soccer matches in 1880 and has gone through many stadium transformations and renovations since then.

Learn the facts and figures behind Newcastle United, a club that is among the most well supported in the country. They are known affectionately as the Magpies, in reference to their colors. Other groups occasionally use the stadium for sports games and musical concerts.

Prices for tickets vary greatly depending on the seats. Most games take place on the weekend, but occasional midweek games take place in the evening. Purchase tickets from the box office, which is open from Monday to Saturday from mid morning to late afternoon. Book a tour of the stadium to see player dressing rooms and dugouts and meet a Newcastle United player.

St. James’ Park is northwest of the Monument area of central Newcastle. Arrive at the St. James metro stop beside the stadium or walk north for 10 minutes from Newcastle Central Station. Nearby landmarks include Newcastle University, Leazes Park and St. Andrews Church. On match days when traffic and parking can be chaotic, take public transportation for convenience.

Newcastle United v Arsenal - Premier League

History of the stadium

Newcastle United ’s stadium is St James’ Park and has been their home since the Toon were formed in 1892. But the stadium actually predates that of the club’s history . The ground opened back in 1880 with a practice match for Newcastle Rangers. While West End FC would call it their home from 1986.

Newcastle Rangers resided at the stadium after they moved north of the River Tyne in 1878 and held practice matches at the ground from 1880. Yet the club moved to Byker from 1882 until 1884. While West End FC moved into St James’ in 1886 before merging with East End to create Newcastle United.

St James’ Park has since been the home stadium of Newcastle United throughout the Toon’s history. While 1899 saw the Magpies begin their first major redevelopment project at the ground to increase its capacity to 30,000. Yet work was underway again in 1905 to take the spectator limit up to 60,000.

Newcastle sought major changes to St James’ Park during the 1920s

Newcastle sought to continue making major changes to St James’ Park during the 1920s as architect Archibald Leitch designed plans with all four stands covered. But planning disputes would plague the project and they installed just one roof. It was not before 1953 that the Toon got to work again.

This time Newcastle erected floodlights around the ground and upgraded them again five years later with four 190ft pylons dominating the city’s skyline. But further problems with planning in the 1960s saw the Toon consider moving to a new home. Yet work began in 1972 on a new covered East Stand.

Relegation and a recession delayed further plans to redevelop St James’ before the Toon tore down the Edwardian structure that made up the West Stand in 1987. The Milburn Stand took its place with the name of one of the club’s greatest-ever players Jackie Milburn in 1988. It also featured a seated tier above a paddock.

Newcastle United v Fulham FC - Premier League

But it was in the 1990s that Sir John Hall as chairman oversaw the largest redevelopment project at St James’. Newcastle rebuilt the Leazes End now named after their iconic executive and also filled in the corners. The changes also saw it host games for Euro 1996 after missing out on the 1966 World Cup.

Freddy Shepherd later oversaw further redevelopment from 1998 to 2000 which saw Newcastle take St James’ capacity up to 52,000. But ex-owner Mike Ashley selling Strawberry Place blocked the Toon from redeveloping the stadia again. Yet Newcastle bought Strawberry Place back in February 2023.

How to get to St James’ Park

Newcastle’s stadium, St James’ Park, has been the heart and soul of the city for years. It is also at the centre of the city, making getting to and from St James’ Park easy for Newcastle’s fans and those visiting the stadium. Supporters can also use multiple forms of public transport to get to the ground.

The Newcastle United stadium is around a 10-minute walk from Newcastle Central Station and a five-minute walk from Monument Metro Station. Bus stops are also in close proximity to St James’ Park, which is located on the junction of Gallowgate, St. James’ Boulevard and Barrack Road and has vast bicycle storage, too.

Fans wishing to get to St James’ Park by car must park away from the stadium as Newcastle’s home has no unreserved public parking on event days. The Toon offers supporters wanting to use private vehicles a park-and-ride system near the A1 from Newcastle Great Park and MetroCentre, though.

Stadium tour info

Newcastle United v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Premier League

Newcastle have an array of options for fans wishing to attend a stadium tour at St James’ Park. The Magpies offer supporters the choice of a standard tour, a rooftop tour, group tours and an autism-friendly tour. Each tour can be bought online or on the day, provided there is space for walk-ups.

Fans attending a standard tour get access to the tunnel, home dressing room, media suite and one of the highest points of the stadium. A rooftop tour provides a 150-foot-high view over Tyneside and four viewing platforms before seeing the home dugout and getting the chance to get pitchside.

Newcastle do not run tours of St James’ Park on matchday, while fans can select from five-time slots. The Magpies run standard tours at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30 and 14:30 but might also have further slots. While rooftop tours are on Saturdays and Sundays from April until October at 12:00 and 14:00.

Runners by St. James's Lake in spring

Welcome to St. James's Park

Pomp and circumstance. Buckingham Palace. And a princely pod of pelicans!

Leisure activities and attractions in St. James’s Park

In St. James’s Park you set your own pace. Share a moment with a pelican. Take an early run on a misty morning. Watch the world go by with an ice cream and a deckchair.

This is the park to explore at your leisure.

Making the most of St. James’s Park

St. James’s Park is London’s oldest Royal Park, and the most visited. It’s the famous setting for many royal ceremonies, from the daily Changing the Guard outside Buckingham Palace, to the full pageantry of Trooping the Colour on Horse Guards Parade in early June.

The parkland itself is a peaceful, green space that allows you to escape the everyday, connect with nature, and boost your wellbeing.

Walking, running and cycling in St. James’s Park

You’ve got the option of many different walking trails, cycle paths and running routes to choose from. Discover the secret stories and rich history of the park with a self-guided walk, or stroll to Duck Island , a nesting sanctuary for many of our smaller birds, ducks and geese. Many regular runners and cyclists use the park a great way to de-stress and stay fit as they commute to work. If you are cycling through, please do respect the walkers and the wildlife, who share the paths and trails.

Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk

If you have two or three hours, the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk covers seven miles, and takes in four Royal Parks, three palaces and two mansions, all of which were special to Princess Diana at different times in her life. You’ll also experience the wildlife, the many gardens and landscapes of the parks, as you walk.

Watch the world go by – from your deckchair

On a lazy Sunday afternoon, why not sit in the sunshine and watch the world and the wildlife go by. Our partners, ParkDeckChairs , rent deckchairs by the hour or by the day, and in the summer we often have live music at the St. James’s Park bandstand.

In summer, it’s hard to miss the spectacular Buckingham Palace flower beds – blazing with thousands of scarlet geraniums and over 50,000 yellow wallflowers. As the backdrop to countless royal occasions, they’re possibly the most televised and photographed flower beds in the country.

If you enjoy team sports and organised activities, head over to Hyde Park , where you can have an open air swim, take a boat out, or book a game of tennis or padel. Park Sports Hyde Park has excellent sports facilities, courts and pitches on the south side of the park.

Information for fans travelling to St James' Park on Saturday

Supporters making the trip to Tyneside for our Premier League fixture against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday should be aware of the following information...

A reminder that we kick-off at 12:30pm , with gates opening at 11am.

Supporters are asked to take particular note of the information regarding the unauthorised use of tickets which can be found below.

Further information can be found in the Newcastle United Visiting Supporters’ Guide .

Getting to St. James’ Park

St. James’ Park is one of the most accessible and well-connected football grounds in the UK. The stadium is located close to the junction of Gallowgate, St. James’ Boulevard and Barrack Road, just a 10-minute walk from Newcastle Central Station and around five minutes from Monument Metro Station and the city’s major bus stations. Simply follow the pedestrian signs located throughout the city centre.

With restoration work set to begin on the historic Tyne Bridge in April 2024, supporters attending St. James' Park are advised to take note of anticipated travel disruption across the region. For further information click here .

Public transport is strongly advised when travelling to and from Newcastle city centre and Gateshead town centre, whether or not you drive over the Tyne.

Coach travel available

The Club should like to advise supporters that tickets remain available for our official coach service to St. James Park. Tickets are priced at £50 return with further information below:

Park and ride

There are no public car parks on event days at St. James’ Park and traffic restrictions may be in place. Instead, we strongly recommend using public transport to reach the stadium. Newcastle operate a park and ride system from two sites close to the A1 motorway - from Newcastle Great Park (close to the Newcastle Racecourse) and the Metro centre. For directions, timetables and additional information, please visit gonortheast.co.uk/nufcbuses .

Newcastle upon Tyne is served by the Tyne & Wear Metro system, a light rail network with frequent services between Newcastle Airport, Newcastle city centre, the coast, and major transport interchanges and destinations south to Wearside. We recommend St. James’ Metro station, Monument station – a five-minute walk away – is served by both yellow and green line routes towards Newcastle International Airport, South Shields and the coast. For more information, visit nexus.org.uk/metro.

Situated on the East Coast Mainline, Newcastle Central Station is a 10-minute walk from St. James’ Park, walk west along Neville Street (A186) and turn right onto St. James’ Boulevard. The stadium is located at the top of the road and will become visible as you reach the junction with Bath Lane/ Wellington Street.

By public bus

Newcastle upon Tyne has two major bus stations for local and regional services – Haymarket, for services to and from Northumberland and the North, and Eldon Square, for services to and from County Durham and the South. Both are located on Percy Street, a five-minute walk from St. James’ Park. To reach the stadium, walk southwest on Percy Street and turn right onto Gallowgate. St. James’ Park will become visible on your right. For more information on local bus services, please visit nexus.org.uk/bus.

Newcastle Coach Station is on St. James’ Boulevard and receives National Express coach services, while Megabus operates services from outside Newcastle Central Station. Both offer frequent services from across the UK with links to Europe. If you plan to travel via a private fan coach, please contact Northumbria Police Football Planning team on planning.for.newcastle.football@northumbria .police.uk They will be happy to advise you on suitable drop-off points.

There are taxi services available throughout the city, with major taxi ranks located at Newcastle Central Station and transport interchanges. The nearest taxi rank to St. James’ Park is situated two-minutes away on foot, opposite the entrance to Chinatown.

Entering the stadium

Visiting fans enter via turnstiles 89-94, in the Leazes Stand at the north end of the stadium, which can be accessed via either the east or west side. Fans are advised to arrive early at the stadium to allow enough time for necessary security checks. All fans will be subject to searching. Drugs and Pyro detection dogs will be present. Fans without tickets for this fixture are urged not to travel to the stadium. There are no alternative viewing areas for visiting supporters in the city.

Accessibility

Public Transport is generally accessible for wheelchairs users. There is limited availability car parking. Please contact us in advance via the dedicated operations telephone line 0191-201-8688 to book a place. Any supporter attending with oxygen or other essential medication equipment must notify us prior to arrival by e-mailing [email protected] There are 16 wheelchairs bays available which are located in front of the visiting supporters. Entrance is via the lift adjacent to turnstile 94 . Accessible toilets, First Aid and Changing Place facilities are close to the viewing area. Any Newcastle United steward or staff member will be able to assist with access needs should you have any questions or concerns.

Refreshments

St. James’ Park has a varied catering offering, including vegetarian and halal options. Accessible on approach to the stadium, Shearer’s Bar serves a range of food on both matchdays and will be open from 10am to 12am on Saturday. In the main concourse, kiosks serve a range of food including pizzas, burgers and pies. A full range of hot and cold drinks, as well as confectionary is also available.

Visiting supporter pubs

There are no designated visiting supporter pubs, however, away fans will be welcomed in most pubs around Newcastle.

Cashless payments

Contactless payments are encouraged at kiosks in the concourse. Cash is accepted at a limited number of locations. There is a Barclays ATM at the Southwest corner of St. James’ Park. A free-to-use cash machine is also located at the Tesco Express store directly opposite the stadium on Barrack Road.

For security reasons, you will receive a body search and any bag you arrive with will be searched at the stadium. We do not allow large bags or suitcases. Glass bottles, weapons or pyrotechnics are banned from the stadium. Full terms can be found in our ground regulations at nufc.co.uk/ground-regulations.

Supporters that are on the ‘Disability Access Scheme’ and have a bag exemption certificate for home matches, please bring the certificate with you. Newcastle will accept these forms on the night and will allow you to enter with your bag.

Spurs Respects

We are proud of our superb and loyal support at home and away.

We recognise that most supporters want to watch a football match and not listen to abusive or indecent language from the stands. Discriminatory or violent behaviour, including racist, homophobic, sexist or anti-disability shouting, chanting or actions, is unacceptable.

The Club reserves the right to indefinitely ban supporters found guilty of using discriminatory language or violent behaviour.

Reporting anti-social behaviour

Newcastle United Football Club does not tolerate any form of direct, indirect discrimination, victimisation or harassment. If you have been subjected to or witnessed discriminatory behaviour whilst at St. James’ Park please text ’HELP’ with your seat number and details of what is happening to 60070.

Duplicate tickets must be requested by emailing  [email protected]  and will only be provided on production of valid photo ID.

Flags and banners

There is only a limited amount of space to display banners and flags within the Stadium and they must therefore be no larger than 150cm in depth and 250cm in width. Banners and flags must not obstruct the view of others, cover advertising signs or cause a safety hazard. Banners and flags must not display any abusive or threatening words, images, political statements or be deemed unacceptable. Flag poles are not allowed. All banners and flags must carry a Fire Safety Certificate.

Supporters are also reminded of the Club’s own  Flags and Banners Policy  which is in effect at away matches.

Unauthorised use of tickets

Supporters are reminded that the unauthorised reselling or passing on of tickets is strictly prohibited. In line with the Club's  Sanctions & Banning Policy , supporters found to have purchased tickets and subsequently sold or passed them on to other supporters, or offered for sale, will be subject to sanctions.

Supporters unable to attend

Supporters unable to attend the match should contact the  Ticket Office  as soon as possible. The Club will make best endeavours to reallocate tickets to other eligible supporters and issue refunds upon receipt of original tickets.
