I'm going on a trip - a mind game for language classes!

April 19, 2014

I am a very bossy person by nature, and unfortunately I didn't realize it until right after I graduated from high school. By the grace of God, I've learned how to tame my nasty natural instincts...although it's not always easy! Being married helps :)

I think that this is why the game that I'm about to explain is my favorite game ever. It's a mind game, and I'm in control. I get to tell people "Yes" or "No", and they have to live with my verdict. I get to go on a power trip, but everyone thinks that it's fun. MUAH HA HA!!!

island trip game

The name of the game: I'm going on a trip!

You've probably played this game in one of its many versions before, but perhaps you have not considered how to apply it to the language classroom. I'll explain the rules, several possible scenarios, and then I'll wait for your comments to find out even more ways that we can use it to further our students' language acquisition!!

The premise of the game

The students are going on a trip and have to figure out what they can/can't bring. Only the teacher (game master) knows the criterion that an object must meet in order to go along with the student on the trip.

How to play "I'm going on a trip"

  • The teacher tells the class that they are going to go on an imaginary trip. The class decides where they want to go.
  • The teacher tells students that they can only bring certain items on the trip, and that any object they bring must meet a specific criterion. Their goal is to figure out what the criterion is, but they must never say what they think the criterion is when they think they know it. They must use guess and check to confirm their hypothesis.
  • The teacher gives students one example of an object that can be brought on the trip decided on by the class, enclosed in a model statement. For example, "I'm going to Hawaii, and I'm going to bring [a swimsuit]".
  • The teacher writes the model statement on the board, then turns it into a question and reflects it back to the class. For example, "What are you going to bring to Hawaii?"
  • Students take turns saying what they are going to bring to Hawaii, always following the model statement exactly. "I'm going to Hawaii, and I'm going to bring [a palm tree]". "I'm going to Hawaii, and I'm going to bring [my boyfriend]". They can say anything.
  • After each statement, the teacher responds "Yes, you can" or "No, you can't".

How to help students figure out the key

Students continue saying what they will bring, with the teacher confirming or denying their idea. Every once in awhile, the teacher throws in an example that works in order to help the class. At first, they should be examples that confuse the kids--bring ridiculous things like buildings, countries, whatever! The examples should get more and more obvious as the game goes on in an effort to help all students to figure out the criterion. Use inflection, body language, etc. to help students figure it out!

Again, students must never say out loud what they think the criterion is, but instead confirm their hypothesis by volunteering more statements. Once they have it, you will know (and they will too) because they will be allowed to bring everything that they volunteer.

Ideally, you end the game when all students have figured out the trick...you may need to "cheat" to help all students get there, depending on how difficult the criterion is with which you play.

island trip game

Possible Criterion for "I'm going on a trip"

Here are some possible criteria that you can use to play the game. You only use one per game!!

You must say "Um" or "Uh" before you make the statement. (This is my favorite!) Ex: "Um....I'm going to Hawaii, and I'm going to bring a castle". In order for this to work well, however, it is best if the teacher calls on random students as opposed to having students raise their hands. If kids have planned out what they are going to say, they will not often say "Um". Your students that are excellent at public speaking may get frustrated because they don't use fillers, and so they won't ever be allowed to bring the items that they suggest!

ALPHA ORDER

The items must go in alphabetical order. For example, "I'm going to Hawaii, and I'm going to bring an Apple" "I'm going to Hawaii, and I'm going to bring a Boat" "I'm going to Hawaii, and I'm going to bring a Chunk of cheese". Start from a letter in the middle of the alphabet to make it less obvious, and use words whose initial letters are disguised in sound, like "Xylophone" or "Phenomenal".

ALPHA CHAIN

The items must begin with the last letter of the previously accepted item: ex: ApplE, ElephanT, TrampolinE, EgG, GoD, DoG...

WORD LENGTH

The items must all consist of the same number of letters: food, door, cars, hand, etc. You would probably want to plan out a list of these ahead of time for you to use as examples, because it isn't easy to think of them on the spot.

The items all fit into a specific category--things that are round, things that are red, things that are awake in the night, things that have doors, etc.)

THAT'S NOT FAIR!

The person saying the sentence fits into a specific category--boys only, students with birthdays in August-December, students that speak another language in addition to English + TL, etc.

Play with different sentence frames!

Here are some possible language structures that you can use to practice it in different units and levels:

  • I go to __ and I bring __
  • I'm going to go to __ and I'm going to bring __
  • I want to go to __ and I want to bring __
  • I'm thinking about going to __ and I'm thinking about bringing __.
  • I went to __ and I brought __
  • If I were to go to __, I would bring __.
  • When I used to go to __, I used to bring __.
  • When you go to __, I recommend that you bring __.

You can also change the subject to "WE are going to __ and I/We/my friend am/are/is going to bring", and you can change the verbs used (flying to, traveling to, etc.; I live in __ and I have __; I'm packing my suitcase and I put ___ in it). The possibilities are endless!

Have a BLAST!

Hope your students love this game as much as my students and I do! I'd love to hear more ideas for how to play it differently in the comments section!

How To Play I Am Going To And I'm Bringing

Materials needed.

Something for kids to sit on - they should be roughly in a circle, and close enough together to be able to hear each other. Develops language skills, listening skills, and deductive reasoning.

This is a guessing game. If there are fewer than ten people in the group, one person thinks of a word - if there are 10 people or more, two people think of a word together, without the rest of the group knowing what the word is. They should sit at opposite ends of the circle, so that clues are only given once every few turns. One of them gives the first clue by saying, "I am going to" ... "and I am bringing" - something that starts with the first letter of the word. Participants then try to guess the next letter of the word by saying, "I'm going to" ... " and I'm bringing" - something that starts with what they think is the next letter of the word. If they guess correctly, the leader(s) says, "Yes, you can come," but if they guess incorrectly, the leader says, "No, you can't come." You can adapt this game to the seasons of the year by changing the location of where you are going to - for example, during Lent, you can say, "I am going through the desert," or "I am going to Jerusalem," or in Advent you can say, "I am going to Bethlehem," or during the season before Pentecost, you can say, "I am going to the Upper Room to pray with the Apostles," etc. SAMPLE: The word is "Christmas" Start: I am going to Bethlehem and I'm bringing a cat." 1st Guess: I am going to Bethlehem and I'm bringing an apple." Response: NO, you can't come. 2nd Guess: I am going to Bethlehem and I'm bringing a hat. Response: Yes, you can come. This signifies to the whole group that the second letter has been guessed correctly, and now they use the same process to guess the third letter. Once they have it, they then continue around the circle until they get the fourth letter, and so on, until someone guesses the word. That person becomes the next leader. VARIATIONS - it might not be a word - it might be an action. For example, the leader might put his finger on his chin, and only let people come who put their finger on their chin. To make the game more interesting, you can mix it up between words and actions - the kids now have to figure out whether they are guessing a word, or an action. They might also decide to have the clues end with the letter that needs to be guessed, instead of starting with that letter. Let the kids get creative with this.

In my opinion it's GREAT!!!

A much easier variation of this game is that kids must "bring an item" that matches their own first name. So somebody with the name Matthew would bring "matches" and Ashley would bring "apples" and so forth. Another variation, is that kids need to move through the alphabet; so the first person to pick something has to start with "A," and the following has to bring something starting with "B," and so forth.

Very difficult game nonetheless very interesting.

I’M GOING ON A TRIP GAME RULES

i"m going on a trip rules title

OBJECTIVE OF I’M GOING ON A TRIP… : Add to the growing list of things to take on a trip and memorize all of the previous items in order.

Number of players : 2+ players, materials: none needed, type of game: word game, audience:  8+, overview of i’m going on a trip….

i'm going on a trip suitcase

I’m Going On A Trip… is a fun memory game that will trip up even the most practiced players. Although the premise of this great game is simple, this game can become super complicated and confusing the longer the round goes on.

island trip game

Every player must add to a growing list of items that will be taken on a trip. To start the game, the first player says, “I’m going on a trip, and I’m going to bring…” and finishes the sentence by adding an item they will bring.

So, for example, the first person might say, “I’m going on a trip, and I’m going to bring a tent.” The next person then mimics what the first person said but adds an additional item to the item list by saying, “I’m going on a trip, and I’m going to bring a tent and a pair of shoes.” The third person continues by adding a third item, this process continues.

The game continues and the list of items keeps growing as each player takes turns adding to the list.

END OF GAME

The game ends when a player messes up and is unable to correctly list all of the objects in the proper order.

To make the game more challenging you may change up the sentence structure, add requirements for the items listed, or even add a secret rule.

When changing up the sentence structure you may say something like, “I’m going on a camping trip, and I need to pack…” or “I’m going on a trip, and I should invite…”

When you want to change the requirements for adding items to the list, you could add additions such as, the first letter of the item has to be the same letter as the last letter of the previous item, all words must have double letters, or that a certain letter can’t be used.

Going on a picnic

island trip game

What it is : A talking, guessing game, similar to green glass doors , but players think of their own rules rather than following the secret green glass door rule.

Best for : 2 to 8 players.

What you need : Nothing!

How to play : Similar to green glass doors, players try to discover what can be taken on a hypothetical picnic. One player starts by thinking of a rule for things that can go on the picnic; the other players try to guess the rule.

Say Julie and Todd are playing. Julie starts by thinking of a rule of things that can and can’t go on the picnic. The rule can be as complex or as simple as she likes. It can have to do with any attribute (color, shape, size, even the number of letters used to spell the name of the object). Here are some example rules Julie could choose:

  • Only yellow things can go on the picnic (bananas, the sun, dandelions, etc.).
  • Only things you can eat can go on the picnic (apples, oranges, pancakes).
  • Only things bigger than a person can go on the picnic (elephants, houses, the moon).
  • Only things that are spelled with five letters can go on the picnic (apple, grass, honey).

The rules could be even more complicated and relate to the person trying to go on the picnic, like these rules:

  • I can only bring items on the picnic that start with the same letter as my first name (so Julie could bring jam to the picnic, but Todd couldn’t, though he could bring a truck).
  • I can only bring items on the picnic that start with the same letter as the first name of the person sitting to my right (yeah, that one can get really complicated to figure out).

The player thinking of the rule can use his or her imagination and come up with something as complicated or as sneaky as they want; the point of the game is to keep the other players from guessing the rule.

Let’s say Julie picks the rule that only yellow things can go on the picnic. Once she has the rule, she starts the game by declaring something she’s bringing on the picnic. For example, she’d say:

“I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing bananas, and I can go.”

Then it’s Todd’s turn to guess something that he can bring on the picnic. He might say, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples?” Then Julie would shake her head sadly and say, “You can’t go.”

Play would continue, with Julie and Todd taking turns. Julie would usually say things that she could bring to the picnic, but she could give Todd some examples of things she can’t bring, too. Todd keeps guessing until he’s figured out the rule. Then it can be Todd’s turn to think of a new rule for Julie to guess.

It’s a great, entertaining game for long car trips or killing time. Since the rule changes with each round, it doesn’t get boring easily. And the level of difficulty can be easily adapted—just choose easier rules for younger kids and harder rules for older kids.

Variations : This game is a more adaptable variation of green glass doors .

Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

Picture this: golden sands, blue waters, and the sun shining down as waves lap at the shore. The only way to make a day at the beach even more perfect is with activities and games that will get your whole group bonding, laughing, and playing together.

As a toy industry expert, I've handpicked a selection of products to take to the beach that I personally use and love — from classic favorites like sand castle sets to new and innovative games. Whether you're planning a family vacation or a day out with friends, these beach games are sure to add fun and excitement to your outings.

SwimWays Hydro Paddle and Pickleball Set

Why We Love It: This pickleball set is waterproof, so you can bring it to the beach without worrying about damage from sand or water.

What to Consider: This set comes with one pickleball and one rubber ball, so you may want to bring your own backups just in case.

Whether you are a self-proclaimed pro or eye-roll every time you hear its name, pickleball is here to stay — and now there’s a version that is made specifically to play in the water. I love the vibrant, floral pattern on these paddles, which are also regulation-size, so players can feel comfortable practicing in a low-pressure environment before hitting the court.

This set also offers two ways to play using either the included pickle ball or a rubber ball, adding some versatility. Perfect to throw into a beach tote without adding bulk and suitable for players of all ages, this waterproof pickleball set is even great for other outdoor outings like pool parties.

Spikeball Spikebuoy Water Accessory Set

Why We Love It: Play the popular Spikeball game in a new way — on the water!

What to Consider: The Spikebuoy is an accessory, so you must purchase or already have a Spikeball set to use it properly.

Level up your beach day with Spikebuoy, which transforms the beloved game of Spikeball into a water sport. Simply attach the anchor bag and leg floats to a Spikeball set you already own before you head into the water. My favorite part about this attachment is that you can adjust it to play at various water depths (just watch how much more challenging it gets when you’re trying to make epic dives in knee-deep water). The cherry on top is the convenient carrying bag that makes traveling with your set a breeze.

WowWee Battleship Splash

Why We Love It: This spin on the classic board game will definitely deliver epic aquatic showdowns.

What to Consider: It’s not the best choice for days when the ocean has rough waters.

The classic game of Battleship has been reimagined so that you can quite literally sink your opponent’s battleship, which is a lot more rewarding. With quick and easy setup, including snap-together battleships and pool-filled water blasters, players can test their aiming skills while strategizing to sink their opponent's ships before theirs meet a watery demise.

I found that Battleship Splash is particularly fun to play because it reminds me of a carnival game where you compete to blast water at a target. The blasters offer more than 10 feet of spraying distance, which means players can adjust the distance of their ships for an added challenge.

Franklin Sports Nerf Floating Football & Basketball Set

Why We Love It: The two-in-one design allows you to transition this set from a basketball hoop to a football target with ease.

What to Consider: This set is susceptible to drift due to ocean currents, which might affect the difficulty in aiming.

This Nerf Floating Football and Basketball Set is super durable, ensuring that it is built to last. It also comes with everything you need to start playing right away, including a pump for the three balls that come with the set — and I love a no-tool assembly. Plus, I give it major bonus points for not tipping over while you are trying to score a goal or shoot a basket. With its versatile design, you can easily switch between basketball and football modes using the simple twist and lock knob.

Swimways Hydro Hockey

Why We Love It: Players can engage in competitive, spirited matches with this refreshing and engaging water sport.

What to Consider: This set only comes with one hockey puck.

Hydro Hockey is one of the most innovative water sets I’ve seen. The waterproof inflatable hockey board itself is huge, measuring 5.6 feet by 3 feet to turn the ocean into a competitive arena. Unlike its air-based counterpart, Hydro Hockey utilizes water to glide the puck across the board, creating an unpredictable gameplay experience based on water flow and movements — adding a lot more fun. I also love that players of all ages can participate.

Marbles Otrio Strategy-Based Board Game

Why We Love It: This brainy head-to-head strategy game is a new take on tic-tac-toe.

What to Consider: Compared to wooden versions of the game, it may be more prone to wear and tear over time.

We love a travel-friendly game , and Otrio is one of my favorite games from my personal collection. While there are various versions of this game, including those crafted from wood, choosing the plastic option is ideal for beach use because it is the easiest to clean away sand and any water residue. As players face off in this head-to-head game, they must strategically line up three pieces of the same color by size, order, or within the same space, requiring critical thinking, reasoning skills, and strategy with every move. Otrio is not only educational, but also incredibly engaging, making it the perfect game to play when lounging on the beach.

Mattel Games UNO Splash Card Game

Why We Love It: This classic game comes with durable, water-resistant cards.

What to Consider: Be careful on breezy days so the cards don’t fly away.

This timeless card game now comes as a beach-friendly version. Not only does Uno Splash come with durable plastic cards resistant to water, it’s also great for any group of people, regardless of age. Complete with a convenient clip for easy portability, attach it to your beach bag or backpack to take it on the go. Plus, those who don’t already know how to play can easily pick it up. Don’t forget to shout “Uno!” when you have only one card left!

Also make sure to check out this game’s counterpart, Uno Flip! Splash , which offers the same water-resistant cards with altered gameplay for more hours of fun.

Skillmatics Guess in 10 Splash

Why We Love It: This guessing game features waterproof cards.

What to Consider: Guess in 10 Splash is definitely geared toward a younger audience.

I love toys and games that encourage learning without kids even knowing it, and Guess in 10 Splash even sneaks in some essential skill-building like creative thinking, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. To play, split into teams or go head-to-head, using strategic questioning to uncover the mystery animal on each card. Perfect for kids ages 6 and up, this quick-to-play and portable game features waterproof cards and promotes interactive family fun, making it an essential addition to your beach vacation packing list .

PlayMonster Giant Spoons Game

Why We Love It: Thanks to its simplicity and accessibility, players of all ages can join in on the Giant Spoons fun.

What to Consider: This game may be challenging to play during windy conditions.

The game of Spoons holds a very special place in my heart, and I love that this jumbo-size edition comes with everything you need to take this game anywhere — including the beach. In Spoons, players aim to collect a matching set of cards and grab a spoon from the center of the table, leading to a frantic scramble as others subsequently rush to grab spoons before they are all scooped up. With oversized spoons designed for quick and comfortable snatching, this game offers fast-paced gameplay for players of all ages.

Pro tip: make up some additional rules, like hiding the last spoon inside a sand castle, for example, to increase the competition and ramp up gameplay even further.

Winning Moves Games Scrabble To-go Board Game

Why We Love It: Scrabble to Go has a compact and portable design, making it easy to transport and store in your beach bag or backpack.

What to Consider: It is an adjustment to get used to the smaller game board.

This version of Scrabble from Winning Moves Games is always one of my go-to travel games . Its compact and portable design makes it easy to transport and set up for a game wherever you go, and the folding game board securely and neatly stores all of the pieces. I love that during gameplay, the letter tiles lock into the game board, so they don’t budge. Plus, with the ability to pause gameplay at any time by simply closing the lid on the racks and folding the board closed, Scrabble To Go offers convenience for beachgoers.

Wicked Big Sports Takraw

Wicked Big Sports

Why We Love It: This unique game combines soccer and volleyball.

What to Consider: Takraw is best for competitive and active beachgoers.

Wicked Big Sports Takraw is a thrilling fusion of soccer and volleyball gameplay that promises to bring on the competition. Complete with a waist-high net and court lines, this game challenges players to kick the ball over the net and score against their opponents, all while adhering to the rule of no hands allowed. At the end of the day, all pieces fold up neatly back inside the convenient carrying case. Be warned: try not to kick the ball too hard and send it flying to the other side of the beach.

Kan Jam Pickleball

Why We Love It: The versatility of this game allows for it to be played on various surfaces and adapted to different playing spaces.

What to Consider: It takes some practice to get the hang of it.

Kan Jam has become an outdoor staple, so I was really excited to see this pickleball iteration of the game. Gameplay is similar to the disc version and the main technical difference is that the slot in the front of the goal is large enough for the pickle ball to fly through. Players on the same team will stand on opposite sides of the goal, aiming to either hit the ball on the side of the goal, through the top, or right through the front opening. I really like that this game caters to players of all skill levels, and it’s versatile enough to play anywhere. A carry bag is also included for easy storage and transportation.

Exploding Kittens Throw Throw Burrito Extreme Outdoor Edition

Why We Love It: This hilarious game will have you and your friends laugh-crying while dodging burritos in the sand.

What to Consider: The inflatable burritos could get lost or carried away by strong winds on the beach.

If you never thought that you would chuck life-size burritos at your family and friends, then think again. This version of Throw Throw Burrito gamifies dodgeball by combining card collecting with dodging and throwing inflated airborne burritos. I also love that the jumbo playing cards are water-resistant, so they won’t get damaged during gameplay. Get ready for a beach game like no other as you launch burritos and collect cards to earn points and claim victory.

EastPoint Sports Light-up Bean Bag Toss

Why We Love It: This game is portable and convenient, making it a must-have addition to any beach game collection.

What to Consider: Make sure to include fresh batteries so you don’t run out of juice in the middle of a game.

It would be a crime to not mention cornhole for a beach game roundup, and this option from EastPoint Sports stands out as a versatile and convenient choice. I love that you can keep the party going even as the sun is setting with the light-up features on the bean bags and targets. It gets even more bonus points for its integrated storage, scoring, and bean bag return right on the board, making setup and cleanup a breeze.

Koosh Double Paddle Set

Why We Love It: Designed to be easy to catch and play with, Koosh balls also double as a fun fidget toy.

What to Consider: The Koosh balls made for this set are small, so keep an eye out for them if they bounce in the sand or water.

Remember Koosh balls? This toy from the 1980s is back for a new generation of kids, and PlayMonster has integrated Koosh balls into a variety of sports-themed products. I regularly take out this paddle set for outdoor gatherings and barbecues, and I think it would also make a great addition to the beach. There are countless ways to enjoy bouncing the Koosh, from challenging yourself to bouncing from far distances to playing exciting head-to-head matches. It also features a super satisfying trampoline-like bounce and a lightweight design, so you’ll barely notice that it’s in your bag.

Create A Castle Sand or Snow Castle Split Mold Set

Why We Love It: This kit helps you construct elaborate sand kingdoms that stand out on the shoreline.

What to Consider: Make sure to use moistened sand for best results.

This is the type of product I wish was around when I was a kid. Create a Castle kits take sandcastle building to a whole new level. Just fill sand inside the split molds, unbuckle, and voila — you have a stunning sand structure in virtually no time. The pro tower kit includes everything you need to build impressive towers, from varying sizes to intricate details like battlements and windows. Plus, with a convenient mesh backpack for easy transportation and cleanup, this hassle-free sand molding system is the perfect beach companion. And not only is this set great for the beach, but you can also use it to build snow castles in winter months.

Zuru Bunch O Balloons Reusable Water Balloons

Why We Love It: These next-generation water balloons are sustainable, offering an eco-friendly way to enjoy a classic summer staple while minimizing waste and environmental impact.

What to Consider: Refilling these water balloons on the beach might make the water inside sandy.

Make a splash at the beach with Bunch O Balloons Reusable Water Balloons. You may already recognize the Bunch O Balloons name, which allows you to quickly fill one hundred water balloons in under a minute. Now, the company has further innovated in this space with reusable water balloons. With magnetic technology allowing up to 1,500 reusable splashes per balloon, these eco-friendly alternatives offer sustainability without compromising on the fun of classic water balloon battles that the whole family can get involved with. Simply open, dunk in water, and close the balloons to quickly refill.

BigMouth Squishmallows Beach Ball

Why We Love It: These adorable beach balls feature viral Squishmallows characters.

What to Consider: These beach balls might require more effort to fully dry and deflate before you pack them away.

Now you can bring the beloved Squishmallows characters with you to the beach without getting your precious plush wet. BigMouth’s Squishmallows inflatables — featuring fan-favorite characters Sunny the Bee, Gordon the Shark, and Maritza the Cactus — add a playful flair to classic beach balls. Easy to inflate and deflate, these vibrant 30-inch beach balls are perfect to play volleyball or enjoy other activities.

Wham-O Frisbee Max Flight Coaster

Why We Love It: The updated design of this Frisbee was specially engineered to fly further distances.

What to Consider: This activity is not the best on crowded or smaller beach areas, so make sure you have enough room to throw and catch the Frisbee safely.

Head’s up! A Frisbee is the ultimate family-friendly activity for all ages, and this Max Flight Coaster iteration is powered by a high-performance inner core, specially engineered to fly further than traditional Frisbees . Featuring flight rings for improved grip and accuracy and a soft outer rim ensures comfort, control, and easy catches, these Frisbees are perfect for beginners and experienced players alike.

Fat Brain Toys Maxi Bird Kite

Fat Brain Toys

Why We Love It: The Maxi Bird kite is easy to assemble and set up, making it an ideal family-friendly activity at the beach.

What to Consider: Younger kids will need the help of an adult to get kites soaring high.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane — no, it’s a kite! Make your beach day soar with Maxi Bird, a gorgeous kite that is adorned with bright and vibrant colors. Assembling this bird-shaped kite is a breeze with its easy-to-assemble pop-up design, requiring a simple knot to attach the handle before it's ready to fly. Made of lightweight polyester and fiberglass, it's easy to handle and takes off effortlessly, promising fun and excitement for the whole family at the beach. It also comes in butterfly and plane versions, so you can collect them all and get flying.

Tips for Buying Beach Games

Consider your group size and ages.

When purchasing beach games, it's essential to consider your group size and ages to ensure everyone can participate and have fun. Opt for games that accommodate the number of people in your group, whether it's a large family gathering or a small group of friends. Additionally, choose games that are suitable for the ages, skill, and ability levels of your participants to ensure everyone can engage comfortably and enjoyably.

For families with young children, look for games that are easy to learn and play, while also providing enough excitement to keep older participants entertained. For example, games like Frisbee, sandcastle building kits, or water balloon tosses are generally suitable for players of all ages and skill levels. Similarly, if your group includes adults or older kids, consider games that offer more complexity or strategy for added challenge and enjoyment.

Think about portability

Think smarter, not harder — when buying games for the beach, prioritize portability to make the trip from the car to the shore seamless. Whether they’re games to play sitting down on a beach blanket or a high-energy game like football or pickleball, I recommend games that are lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry to and from the beach. Consider options that come with a carrying case or bag for added convenience. Additionally, choose games that are quick and simple to set up and take down, allowing you to spend more time playing and less time dealing with complicated assembly.

Opt for waterproof games

While you’re on the hunt for a perfect beach game, prioritize options that are waterproof to ensure durability and longevity. Look for games made from materials such as plastic, rubber, or waterproof fabric that can withstand exposure to water, sand, and sun without deteriorating. Waterproof games are not only more resistant to damage, but are also easier to clean and maintain. Additionally, consider games specifically designed for water play, such as waterproof versions of popular games.

It’s easy to make days at the beach cherished summer memories. The most important thing to keep in mind is to keep your kids’ interests in mind so they stay engaged throughout the day. From imaginative play opportunities while playing in the sand to getting kids up and active with water and sports games, being prepared with a few games and activities will provide hours of entertainment.

For toddlers, it's essential to choose beach games that are safe, simple, and age-appropriate. Activities and games like sandcastle building, playing with beach balls, and splashing around in shallow water are best for toddlers. Not only do these activities keep little ones entertained, but it also provides them with opportunities for sensory exploration, physical activity, and cognitive development. Most importantly, remember to always supervise toddlers closely at the beach and provide plenty of sunscreen , water, and shade.

Make sure to always check the labels on a toy or game for proper cleaning and storage instructions, but generally, start with rinsing toys thoroughly with fresh water (for a deeper clean, use a mild soap or detergent solution) to remove sand, salt, and debris. You should also make sure all pieces dry thoroughly before storage to avoid mold or mildew.

Lost on a Deserted Island

What is Lost on a Deserted Island?

The Lost on a Deserted Island icebreaker is a valuable and engaging activity that serves a dual purpose of team building and getting to know one another. The scenario involves everyone being stranded on a deserted island, where each person can bring one object that represents them or something they enjoy. This first part of the icebreaker allows individuals to introduce their chosen object and explain why they picked it, encouraging creativity and personal sharing.

In the team building portion, participants are divided into smaller groups and asked to collaborate on combining their objects to improve their chances of survival. This aspect fosters cooperation, problem-solving, and creative thinking while ensuring everyone’s contributions are considered. The most innovative group can be rewarded with a prize, further motivating participation and creativity.

Overall, the Lost on a Deserted Island icebreaker is an engaging and approachable way to encourage open communication and foster connections among team members, making it suitable for various age groups and settings.

Rules for Lost on a Deserted Island

  • The situation is that everyone is stranded on a deserted island after a shipwreck.
  • Each person can bring one object to the island, which represents them or something they enjoy.
  • The first part of the icebreaker involves each person introducing their chosen object and explaining why they picked it.
  • Creativity is encouraged in choosing objects.
  • After everyone has introduced their object, divide into smaller groups.
  • In the small groups, work together to improve survival chances by combining the various objects that people brought.
  • Use all the objects mentioned in the teams.
  • Optionally, reward the most creative group with a prize.

Materials needed for Lost on a Deserted Island

Here’s the list of materials needed to play the Lost on a Deserted Island icebreaker:

  • Imagination: Encourage participants to think creatively about what object they would bring and why they would choose it.
  • Listening skills: Participants should actively listen to others when they introduce their objects, looking for ways to combine their items in the teambuilding portion of the game.
  • Small groups (optional): Dividing into smaller groups can facilitate more in-depth discussion and collaboration during the teambuilding portion. If you choose to divide participants into small groups, you will need a way to do so (e.g., randomly assigning group members or allowing participants to self-select their groups).
  • Prize (optional): If you wish to reward the most creative group with a prize, you’ll need to have one on hand. The prize could be something simple like a gift card or a small trophy.

Setting up for Lost on a Deserted Island

To set up for the Lost on a Deserted Island icebreaker activity, follow these steps:

  • Choose a suitable indoor location for the game. An enclosed space with enough seating for all participants is ideal. Make sure the area is quiet and free from distractions to maintain focus on the activity.
  • Arrange the seating in a circular or semi-circular formation. This arrangement encourages eye contact, active listening, and inclusive participation.
  • Decide on the group size and divide the participants accordingly. The recommended group size is medium (10-15 people), but small (5-9) and large (16+) groups are also possible. If you have a very large group, consider breaking it down into smaller subgroups to facilitate more manageable discussions.
  • Clearly explain the rules and objectives of the game before starting. You can write these instructions on a whiteboard or flip chart for visual reference during the activity. Ensure all participants understand their role and the desired outcomes.
  • Consider setting a time limit for each person’s introduction (e.g., 2-3 minutes) to keep the game moving at a brisk pace. This will also help maintain focus and engagement among the participants.
  • Before dividing into smaller groups, remind everyone of the importance of active listening, open communication, and collaboration during the teambuilding portion of the activity. Encourage a positive and respectful atmosphere to ensure maximum learning and enjoyment.
  • Optional: If you plan to award a prize for the most creative group, prepare a suitable reward ahead of time. This could be as simple as a certificate or token acknowledging their creativity and teamwork skills.

How to play Lost on a Deserted Island

  • Decide who will go first: I start by asking for a volunteer to share their object and reason. If no one volunteers, I suggest going in age order or alphabetically by first name.
  • Introduce your object: When it’s my turn, I clearly state the object I would bring and explain why it represents me or something I enjoy. For example, “I would bring a sketchbook because I love to draw and being able to create art would help me cope with the stress of being stranded.”
  • Listen actively: During others’ turns, I pay close attention and show interest in their choices and reasons. This shows respect for my colleagues and helps me learn more about them.
  • Encourage creativity: If someone shares an object that seems unconventional or funny, I make sure to acknowledge their humor and originality. This encourages a friendly atmosphere and keeps the activity engaging.
  • Divide into smaller groups: After everyone has shared, I divide the participants into smaller teams, ensuring each group has a mix of people. If necessary, I might adjust team sizes to balance them.
  • Collaborate on survival strategies: In my small group, we work together to come up with ways our objects could help us survive on the island. We discuss and list practical uses for each item, fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Present combined ideas: Each group then shares their creative solutions with the larger gathering. I facilitate a discussion about the various strategies, allowing participants to learn from one another’s perspectives and build stronger connections.
  • Optionally, reward creativity: If desired, I prepare a small prize or token of appreciation for the most inventive group, emphasizing that the goal is to have fun and encourage creative thinking.

Benefits of Lost on a Deserted Island

  • Encourages teamwork: By dividing into smaller groups and asking everyone to work together to improve their chances of survival by combining the various objects that they introduced, this icebreaker promotes collaboration and cooperation among participants.
  • Promotes creativity: Encouraging people to be creative with their object choices can lead to unique and interesting ideas, helping participants think outside the box and boosting their problem-solving skills.
  • Fosters self-expression: Allowing each person to describe an object that represents them or something they enjoy provides an opportunity for self-expression and helps participants share a little about themselves in a fun and engaging way.
  • Easy to organize: With no special props or materials required, this icebreaker is simple to set up and can be played almost anywhere, making it a convenient option for team building activities.

  • Adaptability: The scenario of being stranded on a deserted island prompts participants to think flexibly and consider how everyday objects can have alternative uses in unconventional situations.

Tips for making Lost on a Deserted Island more inclusive

  • Tip: Allow for open-ended objects. Instead of limiting participants to bringing one specific object, let them bring anything they want, even if it’s an abstract concept or experience. This can help accommodate people with different abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
  • Tip: Use gender-neutral language. Avoid using gendered pronouns when describing hypothetical scenarios or participants. This ensures that all participants feel included and respected.
  • Tip: Offer alternative communication methods. For those who are more comfortable expressing themselves through writing, drawing, or other means, provide alternatives to verbal sharing. This can help accommodate different communication styles and needs.
  • Tip: Be mindful of cultural references. When describing objects or scenarios, be aware of cultural differences and avoid using references that may not be understood by all participants. This helps ensure that everyone feels included and able to participate fully.
  • Tip: Encourage respectful listening. Create a safe space for sharing by reminding participants to actively listen and show respect for each other’s contributions. This can help create a more inclusive and welcoming environment.
  • Tip: Use accessible language. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that may be unfamiliar to some participants. Instead, use clear and simple language that is easy for everyone to understand. This helps ensure that all participants feel included and able to participate fully.
  • Tip: Consider accessibility needs. If possible, provide accommodations such as seating, hearing assistance devices, or large print materials to help participants with disabilities fully participate. This shows that you value their inclusion and want to create a welcoming environment for everyone.

28 Top Island Vacation Packing List Items for 2024 + What to Wear & NOT to Bring

Island beach with boats

To relax, unwind, recharge your senses, and get inspired, there is nothing better than a classic island vacation. From relaxing on the beach to snorkeling, boating, hiking, eating fresh fruit, and dancing under the stars, island vacations can leave you with a whole new appreciation for life and its beauty.

Having indulged in many unforgettable island vacations myself, I’ve created this island packing list to make sure you have everything you need to maximize your relaxation and fun. You’ll also find a section on what to wear on an island , what NOT to bring, and answers to FAQs.

What to Pack for an Island Vacation - 28 Essentials

1. quick-dry travel towel.

I swear by these travel towels. A bulky towel that stays damp and smelly in your suitcase is a nightmare. But these travel towels are perfect for any trip because they pack small and dry quickly, and you don’t have to wash them as frequently as a normal towel. You can use them at the beach and after a shower the same day, and when it’s time to leave, they’ll be dry and won’t take up space.

2. Beach Bag with Built-in Cooler

To up your beach or pool game, I highly recommend this beach bag. It comes with an insulated cooler at the bottom, which means that you can keep your food and drinks cold. It will also easily fit a change of clothes, towels, electronics, beach blankets, and a book! It can hold 14 cans, so you’ll have everything you need to chill on the sand til the sun rolls down.

3. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Did you know there’s a cyber-attack about every 39 seconds? According to Security Magazine, this totals about 2.2K attacks daily and hackers are only getting more ruthless by the minute. Unfortunately, I’ve learned from personal experience that tourists are huge targets for credit card fraud all around the world, so a VPN is a must. I thought our Airbnb would be safe but I can tell you first-hand that it’s awful to wake up to stolen banking information or a compromised PayPal account.

A VPN like NordVPN means hassle-free transactions on a truly private network when you join public wifi at airports, hotels, Airbnbs, cafes, and more. It also will limit online censorship so you’re not blocked from using your favorite websites in certain host countries (which commonly include Netflix, YouTube, PayPal, and sites you may need for work). They even offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so there’s literally nothing to lose and everything to gain.

4. Packing Cubes

These packing cubes organize your luggage so that you don’t have to wrinkle your nice going-out dress while rummaging for your bikini. You can hit the beach as soon as you arrive if all of your beachwear is tucked neatly within the same packing cube! Plus, this set comes with two laundry bags so that you don’t have to mix your clean and dirty clothes.

5. Reef Safe Sunscreen

Don’t ruin your vacation with a sunburn. You’ll be out in the sun a lot during your island vacation, so it’s important to stay safe. However, you absolutely must use “reef safe” sunscreen. Studies show that normal sunscreens contain chemicals that destroy coral reefs. Reef-safe sunscreen protects our skin without harming ocean ecosystems.

6. Travel Insurance for an Island Vacation

If you’re traveling away from home, your domestic coverage will not protect you overseas (including Medicare and Medicaid), and the last thing you want is to pay six-figure bills out-of-pocket! Travel insurance is incredibly important on an island vacation, especially if you want to try new sports, like diving or surfing, or venture slightly out of your comfort zone. In many countries, it’s actually mandated so that tourists don’t end up paying huge medical bills that would be difficult to recover from.

We use Faye because they handle everything on their easy-to-use mobile app, and reimbursements are quick. We were wired the funds when we needed them most, rather than being put through delays and tribulations as with most providers. Faye has completely transformed our experience with insurance and they are simply the best! It’s one of the cheapest expenses on your trip and worth it for the peace of mind alone.

7. Windproof Travel Umbrella

Island weather can be unpredictable. One minute, you’re out enjoying the sun – and then all of a sudden, you’re stuck in a tropical storm. That’s why a windproof travel umbrella is a must. Having it handy means that you don’t have to duck for cover every time it rains.

Windproof Travel Umbrella

8. Hanging Toiletries Bag

This hanging toiletry bag is one of our favorite discoveries! It hangs on any door or hook to create a shelf-like system, regardless of how glamorous (or unglamorous!) the bathroom situation is. It’s so much nicer than chaotically throwing your products all over the countertop. This one by Eco Sun has 4 giant internal pockets and 3 external compartments that can hold our entire family’s toiletries, consolidating all liquids in case of spills.

We love that this brand is ethically made in the state of Hawaii. This woman-owned business is revolutionary in its approach and gives back to organizations supporting women’s education in underprivileged communities. Not only will you be obsessed with this bag (and never travel without it!) – but you’ll love being a part of something bigger, making a positive impact on the planet and truly helping others.

9. Water Shoes

I’ve had my feet scratched up from sharp things in the water, so I consider water shoes essential. For going in and out of the water, they will protect you from rocks, coral, shells, and other items that can hurt exposed feet. Since they’re mesh, they’re super breathable and dry quickly to keep you on-the-go.

Water Shoes

10. Luggage Straps

It’s not that airline and cruise staff mean to be careless with your bags, but there’s an unspoken rule to not pack anything fragile due to the rough transit journey and extreme deadlines for these luggage handlers. Use the suitcase straps to reinforce your belongings and ensure nothing pops open! A faulty zipper or lock can leave you in a sticky situation, and these adjustable straps have saved the day for us on more than one occasion.

My favorite perk is being able to distinguish your luggage from everyone else’s. The brightly-colored straps ensure that you can spot your bag from a mile away and the built-in identification card is a lifesaver if your bag gets lost. It’s one of our favorite discoveries for an avid traveler’s packing list!

11. Mosquito-Repellent Wristbands

Mosquitos sure can ruin a night under the stars, and you definitely don’t want to come home from your island vacation with Dengue fever as a souvenir. This repellent smells like lemon instead of nasty chemicals and won’t sit sticky on your skin. We love that they’re wearable instead of having to respray toxic fumes all day.

Mosquito-Guard-Repellent

12. Cooling Towel

An island vacation is a perfect time to bring along a cooling towel. This awesome invention helps you stay cool with minimal effort, whether you’re by the pool, at the beach, on a boat, or out exploring. All you have to do is wet the towel, wring out any excess water, and it instantly becomes 20-30 degrees colder than the outside air temperature. They’re reusable and pack down super small, making them built for all of the island adventures that await you.

Cooling Towel

13. Water Bottle with Built-in Filter

It’s dangerously easy to get dehydrated in the island heat. Depending on where you are, you also can’t always be sure that your water source is safe to drink. That’s why I love these filtered water bottles. They filter your water on the go, so that you don’t have to waste money and plastic buying bottled water every day.

Water Bottle with Built-in Filter

14. Neck Wallet

Not only are neck wallets good for keeping your valuables safe, but they also keep your most important items together in one convenient place. In this neck wallet, you can fit your phone, bank cards, cash, and passport in zippered compartments. It helps to have all of these valuable belongings in one place rather than strewn about in different pockets and bags. You’ll be able to carry your necessities with you and remain hands-free while taking part in fun island activities like biking, hiking, and kayaking.

15. Sand-Resistant Beach Blanket

If you don’t want sand all over you every time you relax at the beach, I highly recommend this sand-resistant beach blanket. It is quick-drying and lightweight, and it also has sand weights on the edges so that you won’t lose it to the wind. As a cherry on top, it has pockets to keep your belongings safe. This beach blanket takes lying in the sand to a whole new level.

Sand-Resistant Beach Blanket

16. Universal Travel Adapter

It’s very likely that the island you visit uses different electrical plugs than in your home country. It’s important to bring a travel adapter so you can charge and use your electronics in case the plugs are indeed different. I really like this one and recommend it to my friends who travel because it works in almost every country and comes with two USB ports so you can charge multiple devices at once.

Universal Travel Adapter

17. Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger

Charge your phone or camera without having to dash back and forth to your hotel room with this lipstick-sized portable charger. It’s small, simple, and makes travel so much easier. Nothing is worse than missing a killer sunset photo because your camera is dead.

Lipstick-Sized Charger

18. Waterproof Phone Pouch

Use this waterproof phone pouch to film underwater movies. We all want to go full-mermaid and take stunning underwater selfies – this pouch will keep your phone safe from water, sand, and scratches. You’ll have full use of your touchscreen and camera to record epic underwater videos ( with sound ).

19. Floatation Strap

For swimming, snorkeling or boating with your underwater camera or waterproof phone case, you’ll definitely want to use this flotation strap. That way, if you drop your phone or camera, it will float instead of sinking to the bottom of the ocean!

Floatation Strap

20. Activated Charcoal

Feel free to try exotic new foods with activated charcoal on hand. If your stomach gets upset by unfamiliar food, activated charcoal absorbs toxins so that you can recover quickly without disrupting your vacation.

21. Underwater Camera

Whether you want to photograph fish or your first surf lesson, underwater photography is a special island activity. This compact and affordable camera is also great for waterfall hikes or rainy days. It’ll shoot even better videos than your phone in a cover (which you’ll need regardless), but to make the quality truly epic, this weatherproof camera is your best bet.

22. Waterproof Dry Bag

If you want to fully enjoy the water, you’ll need a dry bag to protect your belongings. Even if the bag falls in the water during a hike, river crossing, or boat ride, your electronics will stay completely dry and safe if protected within a dry bag. This one has a shoulder strap and waterproof phone case, which are particularly handy.

23. Motion Sickness Patches

If you suffer from any motion or seasickness, these are a must-have. My wife field-tested a bunch of brands, and this one came out on top as the most natural and effective. It also doesn’t make you drowsy like similar products.

Motion Sickness Patches

24. Leave-In Conditioner

Sun and salt are staples of an island vacation, but unfortunately, this combination can be damaging to your hair. I recommend using a leave-in conditioner at the end of each beach day to protect your hair from drying out and keep it looking effortlessly great.

conditioner

25. Swimsuit Cover-Up

You’ll be so grateful for this swimsuit cover-up. You can get wet at the beach or pool, throw it on for lunch, and then head back to the beach again with no fuss. Plus, this cover-up looks gorgeous on anyone and is comfortable, breathable, and lightweight.

Swimsuit Cover-Up

26. TSA-Approved Luggage Locks

Pickpocketing is common in many parts of the world. These locks are necessary for your checked luggage. They are TSA-approved so security can access your bag if needed, but no one else will be able to look through your things. We bring a couple of sets for suitcases, backpacks in crowded areas that draw thieves, public or hostel lockers, and more.

TSA-Approved Luggage Locks

27. Kid’s Snorkel & Life Jacket

If you’re traveling with any little ones, bring your own snorkeling equipment. While there are plenty of options for adult rentals, you’ll have a harder time finding the right fit in children’s sizes. It’s best to ensure this is fitted at home before you depart for your trip. We also bring these unisex life jackets to help our kids float more confidently in the water (especially necessary for big ocean waves that can even take down full-sized adults!)

Kid’s Snorkel & Life Jacket

28. Packable “Just in Case” Bag

Regardless of where you go, you’ll likely feel the irresistible pull to do some shopping! Pack this “just in case” bag for those unexpected purchases; it fits perfectly under your plane seat and counts as your personal item bag for the flight home (no carry-on fees, woo-hoo!) I also love that it’s a duffle material so it’s super lightweight when empty.

What to Wear on an Island Vacation

Woman at the beach

You also don’t need to worry about packing formal wear. A few nicer outfits are a good idea, but keep in mind that you’ll most likely be exposed to the elements, so don’t plan to wear clothing or shoes that can get easily stained or damaged by the beach or rain. Just in case, all of your footwear should be fairly waterproof.

To fully enjoy the outdoors, include some activewear in your packing list too. For hikes, runs, days out exploring, or whatever other adventures your island holiday offers, you’ll be grateful for some comfortable clothing that you can sweat in.

new cover up

Women will want light dresses for excursions into town and nightlife. Shorts, t-shirts and tank tops are better for outdoor activities. Of course, you’ll also need a killer bikini and swimsuit cover-up for the beach. A cute beach hat and sunglasses aren’t just nice accessories, but also will keep you protected while enjoying the sun all day.

On islands, you can go almost everywhere in flip flops, but for a nice dinner, you may want some durable nicer sandals. Hiking sandals are a great option for walking in warmer weather as opposed to heavy, clunky hiking boots.

Leave jeans and leather behind and opt for lighter, more breathable materials instead.

hat0wood

On an island vacation, men can get away with wearing board shorts, flip flops, and a tank top almost everywhere. In case you want to look nicer on a night out, pack some colorful, lightweight button-downs, and some nice waterproof shoes as well. For outdoor activities, athletic clothes with sweat-wicking technology will leave you feeling much more comfortable in humidity and heat. Pack some lightweight, slightly warmer clothes too, like a thin hoodie and linen pants, for stargazing on a cooler night.

Packing for the Seasons on an Island

The weather in and around the Grand Canyon varies largely depending on location. The base of the canyon tends to be hot from May to September, while the upper rim of the canyon has warm and mild temperatures. From December to March, expect the canyon floor to be cold and snowy, while the upper rim remains mild to cold.

Most tropical islands will have a dry season and a rainy season, but the timing of that varies depends on where you are. The dry season tends to be the warmer months, so when you pack you won’t have to worry about getting cold.

Men will be happy in shorts and t-shirts while women can go out in a beach dress and flip flops .

Rainy Season

During the rainy season, a good rain jacket is essential, as well as shoes with good grip that don’t slip when wet. You’ll also need to pack some slightly warmer clothing when visiting an island during the rainy season, like a light hoodie and long pants because days and nights could get just slightly cold.

Relaxing on the beach – Pack your beach bag, and make sure you include your beach blanket, underwater camera, portable speakers, and waterproof phone case. Women can head straight to the beach in a bikini, flip flops, and swimsuit cover-up, while men can wear their boardshorts, a tank top, and flip flops too.

Snorkeling and boating – You’ll need to wear your rashguard and waterproof swim shorts. Make sure you pack your things in a dry bag and use your floatation strap for your phone. Flip flops are a good idea because they slip on and off easily and can get wet.

Hiking – Hike comfortably in lightweight hiking shorts, and moisture-wicking hiking t-shirts. I recommend wearing hiking sandals or breathable, lightweight hiking shoes rather than heavy boots when it comes to island adventures. Make sure you wear lots of eco-friendly sunscreen and mosquito repellent too.

What NOT to Bring on an Island Vacation

1. don’t pack bulky warm clothes.

Islands are generally warm, and packing bulky warm clothing will just take up unnecessary space in your suitcase. If the island where you are going can get chilly, you can still get away with lightweight items that are breathable and waterproof. Unless the island you’re visiting happens to be Iceland or someplace equally as cold! In that case, consider bringing compact warm clothes like a down jacket or thermals.

2. DON’T TAKE unnecessary valuables and electronics

You’ll be so immersed with nature that you don’t need to bother with too many electronics. Your valuables are safer kept at home. Besides, you’ll be surrounded by water and we all know water and electronics don’t mix. So unless it’s waterproof or a device you absolutely can’t travel without, save yourself the headache and leave it behind.

3. DON’T BRING delicate items that are easily damaged when wet

Your island vacation will likely be wet, so it’s a no brainer to leave any items you don’t need that get damaged when wet at home. Pack a kindle in a kindle case rather than books, and bring an underwater camera rather than a regular one.

4. DON’T PACK a bath towel

Bath towels don’t travel well because they stay wet, and get mouldy, in your suitcase. You’re much better off bringing a travel towel and using towels provided by the hotel.

5. DON’T TAKE too many clothes

On islands you can dress casually and repeat outfits that are easy to get on and off. Besides, you don’t need to wear too much when the weather is so warm!

Your nicest shoes – Free yourself to walk the beach and leave your nicest shoes at home. Wear flip flops or waterproof shoes instead so that you’re free to go anywhere.

Jeans – Jeans are warm and usually unnecessary on an island. You’ll be more comfortable in shorts, light khakis, and loose, breathable fitting linen pants.

Leather – Leather is a no-go for the beach; it does not like to meet the ocean. Leave any leather at home and wear material instead that’s lightweight, waterproof, and dries easily.

FAQs About Island Vacations

1. what is the weather like.

What is the weather like?

Each island is different, but for tropical islands, the weather will usually be hotter and more humid than what you’re used to. Islands can also be very rainy, with unpredictable and fast changes in the weather. Be ready for anything, especially to get wet! Most islands have a wet, hurricane, or monsoon season, so it’s important you travel prepared depending on the time of year you plan to visit.

2. When is the best time of year to visit?

It’s best to visit islands during their summer or dry seasons. Wet or winter seasons can sometimes bring higher surf and more dramatic waterfalls though, as well as cooler temperatures that will be more comfortable for some.

3. What are the best things to do on an island vacation?

What are the best things to do on an island vacation?

The main activity during your island vacation will usually be enjoying the beach – relaxing, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, or diving. You can also explore local cultures in towns, and local nature and wildlife by taking hikes.

You can check out the top local tours for hundreds of cities around the world through Get Your Guide . They’re our favorite booking services for authentic experiences at an affordable price.

4. How can I save money during an island vacation?

Save your money and enjoy nature’s gifts for free. Outdoor activities won’t only help you make the most of what the island has to offer, but your budget will also thank you. You don’t need to spend money every night on nights out when sometimes just a bonfire on the beach, enjoying the stars, is a better bet.
