Pula Istria Guide

Pula city tourist guide

Pula is the largest city in Istria and it is one of the largest cities in Croatia . It was an important industrial center with Uljanik shipyard, built in the Austro-Hungarian time, with the Arena textile factory and also with its cement factory. In recent years, one of the leading economies is tourism. Pula with its architectural beauties, monuments, events and with its beautiful beaches is a place to be discovered ... and why not, also to be rediscovered again. For all these reasons Pula with its acttractions and  sightseeing is definitely worth a guided visit ... perhaps with the help of a professional and local tour guide .

Where is Pula located, Istria in Croatia

Pula is situated south of the Istrian peninsula. Istria is a region of Croatia that borders Slovenia to the north and Italy to the west by sea. In Istria there is a well-developed road network which connects Pula to the rest of Croatia and Slovenia via Ipsilon highway. Pula International Airport is about 10 km from the city centre and is well connected by bus and shuttle service. Pula can also be reached by train with connections from Ljubljana in Slovenia , from northern Istria, from Rijeka and from the capital of Croatia , Zagreb . Unfortunately, the railway network in Croatia is not very well developed and it is difficult to move exclusively by train. If you don't have a car available, it is better to travel by coach.

When to visit, the best season of the year to discover Pula

The Istrian peninsula is known for its Mediterranean climate and low rainfall. The best time to visit Pula is certainly spring and autumn ... but the most lively and festive period is for sure summer, full of concerts and shows and above all a lot of swimming, beaches and sun. Pula city beaches are free and easily to reach from the centre by bus or car, although in summer it is better to use the bicycle or rent a scooter to avoid running into the problem of parking in the city.

Why to visit Pula, sightseeing, actractions and events

Pula is one of the largest cities in Croatia and has the largest Roman heritage of the nation. There is a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre which today is home to concerts of all kinds, from opera to pop, from classical to electronic music. In its past times Pula was under Roman, Venetian and French domination. It was under Italy during Fascism and for almost fifty years it was part of Yugoslavia . This variety of presences are visible everywhere, in monuments , in architecture but also in gastronomy . In summer it is full of events such as Viva La Pola punk-rock music festival, international concerts held at the Arena and at the Cavea Romane (Roman Quarries), and PUF non-verbal theatre festival. Furthermore, for almost 70 years Pulafilmfestival has been home to the most important film festival in Croatia now and in Yugoslavia before. For the calendar of events you can check the tourist board site. And then, let's not forget, there are its beautiful beaches!

If you have the opportunity to move around, a visit (and a beautiful day at the beach), for example, deserves C ape Kamenjak , the extreme point of the peninsula inside the homonymous natural park.

What to see in Pula, things to do in town

In Pula it is possible to visit monuments dating back to Roman times such as the Amphitheatre and the Roman theatre . In addition to the cathedral there are also numerous churches such as the remains of the beautiful Byzantine church of Sa int Maria Formosa .

Guided tour Pula - Santa Maria Formosa

There are also numerous palaces and evidences of the period of the Serenissima Republic of Venice , of the Austro-Hungarian Empire , of the Fascist period and finally of the Yugoslav period. It is also very interesting to find in Pula literally hidden sites inserted within the city, such as the suggestive and moving Roman mosaic " The Punishment of Dirce ", the surprising house of Agrippina or the cloister of the Franciscan church.

Pula guided tour - Punishment of Dirce

Besides being full of historical and cultural testimonies, Pula is also a very lively city. There is a nice outdoor and indoor market, there are many clubs, restaurants and events. Do not miss the Saturday morning at the market , full of colourful stalls of fruit and vegetables and fresh fish from the Adriatic . Here you can also taste and buy local products such as the famous Istrian prosciutto and goat cheeses and cow's milk cheeses such as skuta .

Pula guided tour - Characteristic narrow street in the center

But in Pula it is also nice to relax and sip a coffee or a glass of Istrian Malvasia , perhaps right in the main square, Forum , from where you can admire the Temple of Augustus and the Town Hall building. In addition to monuments, Pula is rich in picturesque little streets such as those leading to the Venetian Castle where tranquillity reigns and from where you can see all of Pula. If, on a rainy day, you want to stay indoors, you can go to the Museum of modern and contemporary art or to the Aquarium of Pula.

Tourist guide Pula - Detail of the Basilica

If you are interested in a visit to the city of Pula, and discover its sightseein and actractions  with a professional and local tour guide , my guided tour includes a visit to the Arena (also in case with the entrance and a visit to the basements), a visit to the main monuments including the Sergi arch and the Twin gate . We will visit the main square, For um with the Town Hall building and the Temple of Augustus .

During the walk we will also see some .... scattered and hidden pearls of the city.

If you are interested, do not hesitate to contact me for thematic visits to the city, or tailor-made tours for groups, families and children. You can also join my Pula Social Tour - a walking tour of Pula for small groups where the focus is meeting new people and discovering Pula at a fair price - only  10 euros per person .

I really enjoyed the center of Pula , it's small and you can walk to all historic places ( get off on No 1 bust stop ) . The rest of the tour was good , but I had problem found stop No 2 .

the mosaic floor in pula the amphitheatre hercules gate roman theatre st nickolas church mosaic was beautiful but hidden behind a dentist shop the market was something to see fruit and veg area then a indoor fish market meat area opposite fish and up stairs was cheese on the out side market where olive oil stalls and honey lavender (fish market was a little smelly lol)

Always advisable to do a city bus tour whenever your away and the pula city bus tour was a great way of seeing and taking in the sights if this beautiful city. From the roman ampitheatre, the fallen soldiers protected grave yards, to the rocky beach expanse that is open to the hot Mediterranean sun rays!

We went on a bus infront of the Pula amphitheatre. The ladies that sold us tickets were very friendly and explained about the route. It was realy great tour with beautiful view from the top. Also the audio part was very useful. We learnd some things about the city and contemporrary life that was not in our guide book. Thanks!

Visit Croatia

Situated near the base of the Istrian peninsula, the population of Pula stands at just over 62,000 making it the largest city in Istria. Its most famous attraction, the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, is one of the most famous sights in the whole of Croatia.

If you’re here for a city break , take a look at our Two Days in Pula itinerary for how to make the most of your time.

Pula

Getting to Pula

Pula has an international airport, with a number of flights from the UK and Ireland and other cities in Europe to there – see our Getting to Istria  page for details. You can use the Brioni  / FILS  shuttle buses to travel from the airport to the main bus station in Pula, or other destinations in Istria. Take a look at our Getting to and from Pula Airport page for details on how to transfer from the airport.

You could also fly to Trieste  and then get a bus to Pula, or fly to Venice  and either get a bus or a catamaran to Pula.

Although the amphitheatre in the town announces Pula’s Roman origins, its history in fact stretches far, far beyond this period. Archaeological findings in the area suggest that Pula’s history stretches back to 40,000 or even 1 million years BC!

It was however in the 11th century BC that Pula rose to prominence when it became a major settlement for the Illyrian tribe the Histri. After expansion by the Roman Empire into Istria in 177 BC, in 40 BC Pula became a Roman colony and grew rapidly during the years 27 BC to AD 14 under Emperor Caesar Augustus. During this time several important buildings were constructed (including the amphitheatre) and the town rose in strategic and economic significance for the Romans, with local trade becoming rather important.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Pula fell under the control of various groups, including the Eastern Goths for 45 years to 538 when it became part of the Byzantine Empire, until the Slavs began their colonisation in the early part of the 7th century.

As with the rest of Istria, Pula fell under the control of the Venetians in 1331 and at the time the town had both strong Slavic and Roman influences. In was under Venetian control that Pula unfortunately suffered from numerous plagues and attacks from other groups (the Habsburgs, for one) and its population dwindled – by the 16th century, there were only 1,000 citizens (down from 5,000 in the previous century) and by 1631, only 300 people lived there.

Pula finally recovered in part during the 19th century when, now in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was proclaimed the chief port of the Empire in 1853 and the population rose once more as industry grew and workers flocked to the town. Around this time, Pula had a large German and Italian population.

After World War I, Pula (and Istria) became part of Italy and the majority of Croatians suffered oppression during this time as their rights were not respected.

After World War II ended in 1945, Pula was administered by the United Nations and British and American units. It finally became part of Yugoslavia in 1947, and was then part of Croatia when it declared its independence in 1991.

Sightseeing in Pula

The most famous sight in Pula is – of course – the Roman amphitheatre, which is called The Arena. Built during the 1st century AD and completed under the reign of Emperor Flavius, this amphitheatre is the sixth-largest in the world (of those that still exist). The three-storey structure held 23,000 spectators in Roman times and today hosts numerous concerts and events throughout the year, including Pula Film Festival screenings.

Pula

The Triumphal Arch of the Sergii was built between 29 and 27 BC in honour of the Sergi family who fought on the side of Octavian, who later became Emperor Augustus, in the Battle of Actium in present-day Greece.

Pula - Arch of Sergii

The Temple of Augustus ( Augustov Hram in Croatian), was built during AD 2-14 in honour of Emperor Augustus. It stands at a site next to which there was also an accompanying Temple of Diana (of which only a very small part remains). The Temple now contains Roman sculpture.

Pula - Temple of Augustus

The Forum , where the Temple of Augustus stands, was once the main square in Roman times and is still a bustling piazza today with its many cafes.

The cathedral contains parts from various centuries, with its rear wall from the 4th century; its sanctuary from the following century; the internal part from the 15th century; and the bell tower from the 17th century.

Hercules Gate ( Herkulova vrata in Croatian; also known as Porta Ercole) is the oldest standing Roman monument, dating from the 1st century BC.

The Aquarium Pula is located in the impressive 130-year-old Fort Verudela, and largely features displays of Adriatic sea life as well as fish and aquatic animals from Croatia’s rivers and lakes.

The Pula Olive Oil Museum showcases a product that Istria is famous for, explaining the history of its production (as far back as Roman times) and exhibiting modern-day production methods. You can also enjoy olive oil tastings here!

There is also a hop-on/hop-off sightseeing bus that runs during the summer months. The bus operates an audio tour in numerous different languages and stops at the main sights in town. For more details, and to see a map of the route, please see the official website: Pula City Tour .

Eating and Drinking in Pula

Epulon Food & Wine ( Epulonova 4 ) offers a wonderful range of Istrian dishes – and wine – in a smart setting in the centre of the city.

Konoba Boccaporta ( Dolinka 18 ) used to be located in Pomer (close to Medulin ) but moved to Pula in 2014. A wide variety of meat and fish dishes, which are all recommended – try one of the platters to sample several tasty items at once.

Tivoli ( Veli vrh 1) is one of the top choices if you’re hankering after some good quality pizza. Plenty of choice on their menu with some pasta options as well.

Day Trips from Pula

Take a look below at some of the top tours you can take in and around the Pula region:

Pula Trivia

Author James Joyce stayed in Pula for five months from October 1904. He arrived to teach English to Austrian officers at the Berlitz language school. Despite calling Pula a “naval Siberia”, he is thought to have written part of his first novel Stephen Hero there, was well as working on his classic A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man . A bronze James Joyce now sits at Uliks (Ulysses) cafe in the town.

Italian poet Dante Alighieri mentioned Pula in his Divina Commedia.

The Pula Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in Europe, and over the years has attracted glamorous acting greats such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Orson Welles.

UPDATED: 17.5.2023.

Pulapromet manages Pula’s public transportation system. City buses connect the city center of Pula with all other parts of the city. There are also bus lines to the closest cities including Barbariga, Medulin, Premantura, and Vodnjan.

This guide is a brief introduction to public transport in Pula. We hope it will help you use public transport smoothly on your next visit to the gorgeous Pula.

In this post, we cover:

  • Pulapromet bus zones
  • Tips for driving
  • Routes and schedules
  • Bus tickets

The facts are these…

Pulapromet – public transport in Pula, Croatia

What are the bus zones in pula, croatia.

Pula’s bus system is managed by Pulapromet. It covers the city of Pula and lines to the nearest cities.

Pula city bus traffic is divided into 3 zones:

  • Zone 1 – covers the city of Pula
  • Zone 2 – closes the circle to Fažana, Peroj, Vodnjan, Galižana, Muntić, Valtura, Ližnjan, Medulin, Premantura, and Banjole
  • Zone 3 – Barbariga line

Tips for using public transport in Pula, Croatia

#1 enter the front doors.

Passengers must enter through the front door. The other entries are used only for exit from the bus. However, disabled persons can enter the bus through any door.

#2 Buy a ticket

You must show the driver a valid ticket when entering a bus or buy it from them. If Pulapromet control catches you in a no-ticket ride, you must pay a fee of approximately 6,60 euros on the spot.

#3 Prepare coins

Drivers have only a limited amount of money for daily work, i.e., selling bus tickets. It is recommended to prepare coins in advance so that you can buy a ticket without making a crowd. In addition, drivers must respect the driving schedules, and line delays may appear if they must return money to many passengers.

#4 You can’t transport a bike

Due to safety reasons, you are not allowed to transport your bike in Pulatransport city buses. However, you can transport your kick scooter if you fold it.

#5 You may transfer to another line

If you have a Pulapromet prepaid card, you can transfer to another line for free within 60 minutes after you validate your card. It is possible to transfer from a higher to a lower zone or within the same zone.

The ticket price for the second zone is 2 euros if purchased on the bus. For a trip to the third zone, the ticket price on the bus is 2,70 euros.

Children under the age of 6 years old accompanied by parents do not require a bus ticket.

The origins of Pula trace back to over 3,000 years ago when the Histri, an ancient Illyrian tribe, first settled in the region. The name ‘Pula’ is believed to be derived from the Greek word ‘polai’, meaning ‘city’.

177 BC :   Roman Conquest

The Romans, recognizing the strategic importance of Pula, seized the city. Under their rule, Pula flourished, becoming an essential administrative and military center.

27 BC – 68 AD :   Golden Era of Roman Architecture

During the reign of the Roman emperors, Augustus and Vespasian, Pula witnessed a construction boom. The grand amphitheater or the Arena, one of the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world, is a testament to this period. Other Roman architectural wonders include the Temple of Augustus and the Triumphal Arch of Sergius.

Middle Ages & Renaissance

5th century :   byzantine rule.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Pula came under the Byzantine Empire. This shift ushered in new architectural styles, notably religious constructions like the early Christian basilicas.

13th Century :   Venetian Reign

Venetians took over Pula, integrating it into their vast maritime empire. The city prospered as a key naval base and port.

16th Century :   Fortification

Facing threats from the Ottoman Empire, the Venetians built robust fortifications around Pula. These star-shaped forts and walls added a unique character to the cityscape.

1797 :   Habsburg Monarchy

With the fall of Venice, Pula became a part of the Habsburg Monarchy. This period saw the development of Pula as a major shipbuilding center.

1918 :   End of World War I

After WWI, Pula, along with the rest of Istria, merged with Italy. The Italian Fascist regime initiated a policy of Italianization, suppressing Slavic languages and cultures.

1947 :   Yugoslav Era

Post World War II, Pula became a part of Yugoslavia. It was a time of reconstruction and modernization.

1991-1995 :   Croatian War of Independence

Pula remained relatively untouched by the war’s direct effects, but its aftermath led to significant socio-economic changes.

Present Day

Pula is now a prominent tourist magnet in Croatia, revered for its unique amalgamation of natural beauty and ancient architecture. Festivals like the Pula Film Festival and various concerts in the Arena offer contemporary culture against the backdrop of rich history.

Pula: A City Time-Stamped

Every brick and cobblestone in Pula bears a tale. From its nascent days as a settlement of the Histri to its grandeur under Roman emperors, from the artistic touch of the Venetians to the contemporary flavors of the modern age, Pula is more than just a city; it’s a chronicle. As you walk its streets or gaze upon the Arena, remember, you’re not just witnessing structures; you’re stepping into stories that have shaped millennia.

So, whether you’re an ardent historian, a passionate traveler, or someone looking to find stories in sunsets, Pula promises a narrative that’s as enchanting as its sea-kissed winds.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Remembering Black Dallas revives forgotten history with new bus tours

A group of people in a park stand circled around a statue of a bird as someone speaks into a microphone

All around Dallas are markers telling the rich Black history that shaped the city: White Rock Chapel, the Pittman Hotel, Keller Springs Road.

But words don’t travel as fast as you think, and some stories are forgotten.

That’s why the historical organization Remembering Black Dallas created a new series of tours — funded partially through a grant from the city's Office of Arts and Culture — highlighting these and other areas in modern-day Dallas County that were once hubs for the Black community.

“Our main focus is to draw light on the history and of the African American freedom towns, communities and those individuals that others may not know anything about,” said Deborah Hopes, the president of Remembering Black Dallas.

Hopes, a South Dallas native, named the venture the Ukunika Bus and Walking Tour after the Zulu word meaning “to give back.” The monthly tours were an idea first put forward by RBD founder George Keaton, and it was one Hopes wanted to keep alive. They both had the benefit of living through some of that history or were taught stories of a time before them.

“We have others that are from that community, or they had grandparents or relatives that lived in those communities that shared stories,” Hopes said.

She said RBD didn’t start the tours out of fear of forgetting the community’s history, but rather as a chance to relive old memories. She believes this is the first step to recognizing Black history while her peers are still around to educate others.

“History in itself doesn't change. History in itself remains the same,” she said. “But if you don't know it, then you are not privy to it.”

A group of people stand in a room in a house that has been turned into a museum

Unforgettable history

The first of the Ukunika bus tours took attendees around South Dallas, focusing on women’s history and how the civil rights movement affected the area. It highlighted American activists like Julia C. Frazier, Pearl C. Anderson and Juanita J. Craft, whose house — which hosted Martin Luther King. Jr and Lyndon B. Johnson — was among the stops.

“I think Dallas can be a very ahistoric place,” said Phaedra Gwyn, who grew up in the city but said she had no idea the cultural significance the neighborhood carried. “I was really happy to learn more about the civil rights movement in Dallas and Black people's contributions.”

Another attendee, Courtney Simmons, was raised in Dallas and attended Lincoln High School. She brought her daughters on the tour so they could see how her neighborhood has changed, and how it’s preserved its culture.

“The infiltration of the city and how it just kind of [reduced] the Black community down and how it got a little disenfranchised, but there's still efforts going on today to keep those visions alive,” Simmons said.

Others grew up in the city and had no idea of the cultural significance these neighborhoods carried.

Another tour covered the area known today as North Dallas, which was established as a Freedmen’s Town in the Reconstruction period after the Civil War.

The area associated with North Park, the Galleria and the former Valley View Mall was once home to Dallas’s oldest and most prominent Black landowners, including Anderson Bonner, Henry Keller and George Coit.

“I traveled up and down Coit Road and didn't realize it was named after a Black person,” said RBD member Karl Lewis. “And I doubt very few people realize that.”

Passengers got a chance to meet several notable Dallas natives who have seen the city change firsthand.

Patricia Price Hicks, who is on the Dallas County Historical Commission, shared her experience growing up in Hamilton Park, an area named after prominent landowner Richard Theodore Hamilton.

“This was unheard of because there was no Black community per se,” Hicks said.

The group explored the hidden White Rock Cemetery Garden of Memories, where they were met by Glen Bonner — one of Anderson’s descendants.

“This was the first known interracial cemetery in North Dallas, North Texas area, actually,” Bonner said.

Hearing about forgotten history brought up a lot of emotions for some attendees. Sicily Whetstone is a grad student who attended the tour for a school project. She said she sees the tour as a form of reparations for Black Dallas that also educates the public.

“Those people have [been] lost in history,” she said. “So, I'm really thinking the reparations really need to go deep, starting maybe in the graveyards and the histories of those.”

She’s grateful for organizations like RBD that are dedicated to praising this history, but she said she’d like to see more support from the city of Dallas.

“This is something that we should sell as our city that this is something that we need to repair,” Whetstone said. “And it should be in our local history books in our schools.”

RBD president Deborah Hopes said that’s one of the aims of the tours.

“What I found is that they're getting these ‘wow’ moments like, 'wow, I didn't know that,’” she said. “I think that is strengthening the desire to do more and want to know more and to learn more about communities in themselves.”

Embracing the past

Remembering Black Dallas required all hands on-deck to be able to execute a project as big as the Ukunika bus tours — starting with the amount of research and networking that went into organizing them.

The organization has volunteers from all over Dallas who were curious to learn more about the history of the land they live on today. They believe it brings a new perspective to what should be researched further and highlighted.

“Everybody can embrace this history because it helps you understand the place that you are calling home,” volunteer tour guide Sharron Conrad said. “By understanding the people and the stories that make up these communities.”

Some, like Larry Offut, are trying to make up for the history they were naïve to. Offut is one of several members of RBD who's white and lived through the civil rights movement. He said the tours are bringing awareness to a past that many people ignored.

“It really was striking to me to read those things and understand that I had lived them as a child and as a young adult,” Offutt said. “…It never occurred to me there was any trauma.”

While RBD has worked to document some of the worst events in Dallas’ past by installing markers around the city memorializing lynching victims, the tours show that there’s much more to the area’s Black history than trauma.

“What I would like others to know is that we didn't only just exist and survive,” the organization’s financial secretary Reginald Small said. “We actually thrived in our communities even with the oppression. We actually thrived, and it's so documented.”

Remembering Black Dallas offers the Ukunika Bus and Walking Tours once a month through August. Some areas they'll hit next are Dealey Plaza, Old City Park and Deep Ellum.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
