Music, media, marketing & misc., the asteroids galaxy tour – the golden age (heineken ad).

the golden age asteroids galaxy tour heineken

More often that not, the songs used to soundtrack ads are rather disappointing. Yes, you get the odd Levis or Nike coming along to brighten things up, but more often not, the song is either uninspired, downright disappointing, or has already been done to death (Moby, Zero 7, Vampire Weekend, Temper Trap). Thankfully though, every so often an ad comes along with a song to bring cheer to your heart, and so the latest Heineken ad is a joy for all the senses.

The ad is the latest for Heineken, and I think it’s their best in a while: it’s called The Entrance and features the most impressive (or annoying, depending on your point of view) party entrance ever. There’s a lot of people in it and, in a rather nice touch, many of them have their own back-story films .

What makes it for me though is the soundtrack, The Golden Age by snappily named The Asteroids Galaxy Tour . It’s a rather silly little bit of retro-pop, which brings to mind the Rat Pack getting nailed in a Soho bar with The Cardigans & Portishead. Or something. The, absolutely stunning, singer Mette Lindberg (yep, she’s Scandinavian) has a voice that errs on just the right sound of annoying, whilst the tune is one that you will do well to dislodge from your head.

So, a good ad with a great soundtrack. And, judging by their history ( this was used in an iPod Touch ad ), we can expect to see more ads being brightened with The Asteroids Galaxy Tour soon.

NB: Heineken are a client and the video shown was supplied by Unruly Media.

Songfacts®:

  • The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, who got some attention when their song " Around The Bend " was used in a commercial for the iPod Touch, is a Danish group led by singer Mette Lindberg and bass/keyboard player Lars Iversen. Lars told us: "That must be the most happy and cheerful song that we have. It's about dreaming yourself back in time, back into the '30s, '60s, '70s - whenever you feel like there was something going on that you missed, and that you weren't a part of because you weren't born at that time. It's about that feeling of walking down the street and dreaming yourself back to these cool times of Frank Sinatra or Jimi Hendrix." (Read more from Lars in our Asteroids Galaxy Tour interview .)
  • The song features prominently throughout Heineken's international 2011 90-second commercial entitled The Entrance, which sees a man battling some quirky characters in a hotel lobby.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Who are the Asteroid Galaxy Tour? So who the Smurf are The Asteroids Galaxy Tour? The group was formed in Denmark in 2006. They are no newbies in terms of corporate sponsorship, as Steve Jobs chose their single “Around the Bend” for an ad for the iPad Touch and they now have the Heineken gig (note to self: hook up with their publisher!). They also opened for Amy Winehouse in Denmark and Katy Perry at the legendary Olympia in Paris.

Increasingly, if you want to get broad exposure in major media, some variation of this route will have to be followed. You can get by without it, of course. But there is no escaping the attention these sorts of campaigns bring. If your publisher is on the ball, there are also large amounts of money to be made in performance royalties – but that’s a different article.

It’s encouraging that major brands are willing to work with lesser-known acts rather than throwing insane money at the usual suspects. So good luck to both the group and the brand.

Thanks for sharing this. I like your conclusion — I think part of the answer to the current woes is a more equitable distribution of what remains of music income streams. Spreading the money around to emerging artists is one way to do that.

The Asteroid Galaxy Tour perform their killer track “The Golden Age” on the set of Heineken’s spectacular TV ad “The Entrance”

Hot on the heels of their glittering new film, Heineken have released the music video for the Asteroids Galaxy Tour’s hit single, The Golden Age.

The Golden Age is the third single from the Danish pop group, and provides the sizzling backing track to the new Heineken film. The 90-second music video features all the stars from The Entrance, including footage shot behind-the-scenes during the making of the film.

The video drops just in time for New Year’s Eve and its infectious tune will provide the soundtrack for celebrations across the world and well into 2011.

The Entrance was rehearsed and shot over a week in a palace near Barcelona, with more than 100 actors playing a part in the blockbuster. They include Kung Fu Comeback, Heineken Duet and the classic, Big in Wonderland , featuring a couple of basketball players who take their training to the next level.

Heineken’s new campaign will see the release of similarly intriguing films over the next few months. In the meantime, if you’re after some tips on how to nail your next entrance, watch the film and explore the hidden stories of its characters at Facebook.com/Heineken.
