Take That, Utilita Arena Sheffield, review: three decades on and the boys haven’t lost their shine

On the opening night of their This Life tour, the Nineties boy band survivors proved they can still dazzle their adoring fans

They've come a long way: Take That on the opening night of their This Life tour in Sheffield

Forget falling in love or travelling the world. It turns out that the key to happiness is spending a Saturday night singing along to Take That’s Never Forget with 12,000 middle-aged women – giddy on overpriced wine and Gary Barlow-induced nostalgia – in Sheffield.

Kicking off their This Life tour at the city’s Utilita Arena, the 1990s’ shiniest boy band made up for their depleted numbers (five has become three – Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen) by powering through three decades of hits with plenty of bells and whistles: pyrotechnics, spinning stages, waterfalls, a section requiring 3D glasses.

It was a pop concert via Blackpool Pleasure Beach rollercoaster. Mournful ballad Keep Your Head Up, from 2023’s This Life, got things off to a slow start that soon gave way to shimmering spectacle. Owen sang perennial earworm Shine from atop a grand piano set in front of a golden staircase; its irresistible optimism (“Your time is coming, don’t be late”) perfectly summing up a band who have refused to let changing lineups or growing older hinder their commitment to having a good time.

Inevitably, any Take That show will leave fans wondering what it would be like if Robbie Williams and Jason Orange rejoined the band (their last show as a five-piece was in 2011) – but the current trio’s flawless harmonies and infectious enthusiasm left little room for complaint.

Designed to resemble a retrospective TV special about their career, the show served as a glory lap through some of Britain’s catchiest pop songs: Back for Good, Rule the World, Relight My Fire. The latter, sadly performed sans Lulu (currently on her own tour), saw the onstage staircase lit up in dancing flames that played testament to the trio’s masterly choreography.

A Million Love Songs (written by Barlow “when he was barely out the pram”, according to Owen) provided ample opportunity for a heartfelt singalong, with the band’s brilliant long-term saxophonist (and music director) Mike Stevens bringing a welcome jazz flavour.

In the past week, the 53-year-old Barlow has been handed a new title: king of TikTok . A clip of him innocently describing his “idea of a very nice day out” went viral, with Gen-Z rushing to ironically use the sound to document everything from lounging on the sofa to doing the big food shop. Last night [ Saturday night] , Barlow took the chance to be part of the joke, saying: “This is definitely my idea of a nice night out.” Who can blame him? Three decades spent making music and selling out mammoth tours despite the naysayers who dismiss them as cheesy – very nice, indeed.

Take That (formed in 1990) is the most successful English boy band in UK chart history, specialising in their own style of pop balladry, the band hails from Manchester, England.

Band manager Nigel Martin-Smith in 1989 had a vision to create a youthful and highly appealing male singing group based on New Kids on the Block. Introduced to young singer Gary Barlow, Martin-Smith decided to design the group around Barlow’s talents, subsequently inviting Howard Donald, Jason Orange, Mark Owen and 16-year-old Robbie Williams. Originally performing under the moniker Kick It, Take That’s breakthrough came with a cover of the Tavares hit “It Only Takes a Minute”, followed by “I Found Heaven” and “A Million Love Songs”. Take That later released the album “Take That & Party” in 1992 which featured all of the hit singles theretofore released.

In 1993 the band released their second full-length album “Everything Changes” garnering generous amounts of popular appeal. The album peaked at No.1 and spawned six singles including “Pray”, “Relight My Fire” and “Babe”. Nominated for the Mercury prize the band saw some international esteem however wasn’t enough to break into the U.S. market.

On the wake of Take That’s third studio album “Nobody Else”, Robbie Williams came under some criticism from other band members for his drug use and was offered an ultimatum: sort himself out or hit the road. Williams chose the latter and Take That embarked on their first worldwide tour and released the album “Nobody Else” in America with Williams removed.

Sensing an opportunity to continue his solo careers in the shadow of artists like Elton John an George Michael, Gary Barlow and the group disbanded in 1996. Barlow’s debut solo single reached the No. 2 spot in the UK chart and Mark Owen began working on a solo album influenced by Paul Weller and Radiohead. In 1997 Robbie issued his solo album “Life Thru a Lens” which topped the charts as did his sophomore release “I’ve Been Expecting You” a year later.

In 2005 a new compilation of Take That hits “Never Forget - The Ultimate Collection” arrived which led to an ITV documentary where the band discussed things past. In late 2005 the post-Williams line-up announced they would tour around the UK in 2006 and released the album “Beautiful World”. The album shot straight to the No. 1 spot, sold over 2.8 million copies and is the UK’s 25th best selling album in chart history. The album was led by the single “Patience” which hit the No. 1 spot, the group’s ninth single to do so.

In 2008 Take That released their new single “Greatest Day” ahead of their fifth studio album “The Circus”. Like its predecessors the album broke many records and earned many awards, afterwards the band embarked on their Take That Present - The Circus Tour Live”.

Robbie Williams returned in 2010 with the single written by both Barlow and Williams entitled “Shame”. Subsequently the band released the single “The Flood” ahead of the group’s 2010 album “Progress”. In 2014 the group released the album “III” led by the No. 1 single “These Days".

Live reviews

Take That was A M A Z I N G! We had seats in Block 420, Row C, and had the BEST view we've ever had at the O2! The support band, All Saints, were quite good and a great introduction to how the stage in the middle worked and what our view would be like for the main act. We found by watching them that Take That wouldn't be little ants like we thought they would, we could in fact see them clearly. I cannot fault the start of the main act as it was just so good. The visuals were superb, and my mind was blown as I watched. As someone who is a die hard Take That fan and loves all of the new songs as well as the old, I stood up for nearly every song and got goosebumps all the time. The visuals again, throughout, were especailly good in the songs Giants, relight my fire and shine. Take That also did a medley of old or obscure songs in the middle, which was amazing for me, even though I was the only one standing up in Block 420! Their new dance song called 'Cry' really got the crowd hyped, as it was amazing to witness. Never forget and rule the world were beautiful, with phone flashlights illuminating the whole arena.

I also cannot fault the secruity, as it was like being in an airport and I felt very safe. However, we had to go to level 1 to get chips as there is not much vareity on level 4 and we do not like going to a big resturant on the ground floor before a concert.

My favourite songs live were: Cry, Shine, wonderland, it's all for you and rule the world.

Back in 2011 Take That played a stint of gigs at London’s Wembley Stadium. They were certainly impressive shows. Since their 2005 comeback the English pop group (it no longer seems fitting to describe them as a boy band) have been famed for the dramatic scale of their arena performances.

Take That drew upon their by-now vast repertoire of work. They had released no less than three studio albums since their much-anticipated comeback n 2005. Of course, the latest album and tour had been particularly exciting because it marked the belated return of Robbie Williams. The largely female crowd was an excitable screaming mass throughout the evening, letting out deafening yells, whoops and screams as the Take That four-piece opened with ‘Rule the World.’ Five songs later, Robbie Williams took to the stage to perform five of his own solo tracks. And then it was time for what we were all waiting for. THE ORIGINAL TAKE THAT LINE-UP PERFORMING TOGETHER. They began with ‘The Flood,’ the leading single of their 2010 album, ‘Progress’. Soon the reunited five-piece were transporting us back to the nineties with a fine rendition of ‘Want You Back’. Take That delivered an impressive spectacle of a performance. And with an encore featuring ‘Relight My Fire’ it would have been difficult to please their audience any more!

A nation went into mourning when boyband Take That announced their breakup in the mid 90s. However they delighted the devoted fanbase announcing a reunion in 2006 as they reappeared as a more mature, grown up band with a new approach to pop music. The tours have also changed with age, there and no more cheesy dance routines of the 90s videos and instead they have been replaced with more considered, sophisticated production values.

The fully reformed lineup took to Wembley stadium to delight fans with a barrage of dancers, lights, video interludes and an infamous illuminating elephant. With so much to focus on, you could review a Take That show without having to mention the incredible track list which includes mega-hits such as 'Relight My Fire' 'Never Forget' and 'Could It Be Magic'. The original reformed four piece also perform modern hit singles including 'Rule the World' and 'Patience' before Robbie arrives to play a number of his solo tracks including 'Rock DJ'. This show really is a masterclass in pop majesty.

What an absolutely wonderful time we had at Take That's Thursday night concert at Take That Arena.

Rick Astley was brilliant a trip right back to the 80s. I'd quite forgotten how many hits there were. Then bang up to date with some of his contemporary work. Great voice great music!!!

Then the boys landed!!!

The set and special effects were incredible. The lads worked so hard for over 2 hours and treated us to a catalogue of hits and routines from their previous tours. Even the outfits were authentic.

It was so fantastic to see such a show and be able to sing along to of the music.

Very hoarse today !

And a final surprise guest Lulu.

The little pocket rocket with the huge voice. Hasn't lost any of it!!

If you get the chance to see the tour my advise just do it.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary in style xxxxxx

I am a heavy metal fan who goes along with his wife to Take That concerts. Joy!

To be honest, Joy is the correct word to use. Take That always put on an excellent show and even thought it is so different from let’s say the upcoming Rammstein concert at the same venue I am so looking forward too in July, these guys show is exciting and so well presented that I found myself bopping like a 16 year old kid out on the kip for his first conquest. Loved it. I would say that of the 5 TT tours I have been to, this one rates second after the Circus show at Wembley all those years ago.

Well done lads. Loved it!

Yet again, a fantastic show. Take That never fail to entertain. They sounded fabulous, the stage was a masterpiece and Lulu was amazing! Rick Astley was the perfect set-up for the boys, getting everyone dancing and singing. The crowd were all in good spirits with everyone being friendly and polite to each other. It was an amazing tribute to the past 30 years with a real mixture of old and new songs. The guys may be 30 years older now but they ooze energy! Certainly my favourite gig since The Circus tour in 2009!!

The concert was stunning and amazing *-*

It was huge, even it was only the 'little' show of them.

Me and my friend both got a plec from Kevin, the best tour manager ever! And we never thought that Howard, Mark and Gary would look at us that much! All three of them looked at us several times and grinned when we grinned or laughed or winked or what ever. We botj saw that they have really much fun with that what they do! :)

This concert was just awesome! <3

Thank you for the great night! <3

Fabulous show!!. A million costume changes, loads of stage props and pyrotechnics fireworks ldancing girls and flames. All the hits were covered and appeared I went. Rick Astley is still as fab as he ever was though he did say" I'm 53 and knackered" lol. Surprise guest was Lulu . "Rule the world" a little tear ran down my face. All had our torches on and my dad's dear face on my phone was lit up like he was there. The stars are coming out tonight...for you Dad. He'd have loved it ❤

Manchester manband Take That are back with their new live tour - and thousands of fans in Sheffield were the first to see it at the weekend. Their new This Life on Tour sees the band's Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen perform a host of new tracks as well as a selection of their biggest hits from their three decades in pop.

The show opens as if they are in a retro TV show, with the boys emerging from a a giant TV box on stage to perform newies Keep Your Head Up and Windows. It then takes fans through an epic retrospective of their music career - including classics from their 90s boyband era like Sure, Everything Changes and I Found Heaven.

Unusually for a Take That tour, there is no big dance crew - instead the three singers are allowed to shine across a variety of stages on a split set. But fans can expect plenty of colourful costume changes, as well as rain, fire and plenty of confetti.

Since Take That returned nearly two decades ago, they've never really gone away.

Although Robbie Williams came and went, and Jason Orange retired from pop altogether in 2013, Gary Barlow , Mark Owen and Howard Donald have kept the flame alive.

Finally though, Take That are back on the road, with a massive UK and Ireland tour announced for 2024.

Who is supporting Take That on the This Life tour?

Olly Murs at Flackstock Festival in 2023

Announced as support for the This Life tour is former X Factor cheeky chappy and "very special guest" Olly Murs .

Olly's relationship with Take That goes back to his reality competition days, where he performed 'Angels' with on-off Thatter Robbie Williams in the 2009 final.

He also supported Take That when they played Hyde Park in the summer of 2016.

It's not impossible that another act may be added to the bill on some or all dates, but for now it's just Olly on the undercard.

Will Jason Orange or Robbie Williams appear with Take That on the This Life tour?

Take That as a five-piece in 2011

Since 2014, Take That have been very much a trio.

Robbie had returned to reunite the original five-piece lineup from 2010 to 2014, but he has since focused on his solo career.

Not long after Robbie parted from the group for the second time, Jason Orange not only left Take That, but quit the whole entertainment industry .

Nothing is impossible in the wonderful world of pop, but we'd say it's pretty unlikely that Jason will pop by.

Earlier this year Mark Owen said of Jason: "I think he felt like he didn't want to do it any more."

The three-piece Take That at the premiere of their Greatest Day film in June 2023

That tallied with Jason's own words when he left the group, saying: "There have been no fallings out, only a decision on my part that I no longer wish to do this."

Meanwhile, Gary Barlow had said: "Jason isn't coming back. Take That is Mark, Howard and me for the next few years."

And back in 2018, Howard said: "Jason has gone off the grid. He's not taking emails or phone calls or stuff like that. That's good for him."

Robbie is a very busy chap, between his solo career and long-awaited Better Man biopic , and he's only just wrapping up his XXV 25th anniversary celebration global tour at the end of 2023.

There's not been any serious whispers that he'll rock by, but he did show up with Mark not that long ago , so we've got our fingers crossed that he might consider it.

Excitement is building for Take That's return to Carrow Road as they bring their This Life tour to Norwich. With thousands of fans expected in and around the stadium from Tuesday afternoon, here's your guide to help you plan ahead.

What can we expect from the show?

Olly Murs singing on stage

Olly Murs will get the party started supporting Take That

Take That are known for being great showmen, with dedicated fans travelling far and wide to see them live on stage for more than 30 years.

The trio - Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald - are performing more than 40 shows throughout April, May and June for their This Life tour.

While the days of gyrating in hot pants alongside bandmates Robbie Williams and Jason Orange may be long gone - all three are in their 50s, after all - the Carrow Road audience can still expect some of the old dance routines and plenty of razzle dazzle.

The Manchester Evening News said their AO arena show on 7 May was a departure from the "theatrics" of previous tours and packed a "real emotional punch".

Fans can look forward to spectacular staging in front of the Barclay stand, pyrotechnics, and a set list that includes old favourites as well as new material from the This Life album, released last year.

Support act Olly Murs is likely to endear himself to the audience by playing homage to the elder statesmen of pop. Let's hope things runs smoother than at Glasgow, where a bar singer replaced him at the last minute when Murs couldn't get there on time.

When does it all start?

Take That notched up a ninth UK number one album last year with This Life

Food and drink stalls in an area outside the stadium branded "The Village" will open to ticketholders from 14:00 BST on Tuesday, with the stadium opening at 17:00.

Those with tickets in the stands, rather than the pitch, cannot buy items at The Village after 17:00, and will be asked to make their way to their seats.

Olly Murs will take to the stage at 19:25, as with other concerts on the tour.

Although Take That's start time at Carrow Road has not been announced, it was given as 20:35 for their Sheffield gigs and 20:25 for Nottingham.

It is expected the show will wrap some time between 22:00 and 22:30. The curfew for live music is 23:00.

I'm getting there by car - where can I park?

Those in the city centre include Castle Quarter and the Forum (both of which close at midnight), Chantry Place Shopping Centre and several car parks operated by the council. , external

County Hall, a 15-minute walk from the stadium, opens up its car park from 17:00.

For those who don't mind stretching their legs for about 30 minutes, City College's car park on Ipswich Road opens from 15:00. Both cost £10, with the college spaces bookable in advance , external .

Alternatively, Thickthorn park and ride , external will be operating late, with buses leaving Norwich bus station every five minutes, from 22:42 to 23:32.

Are extra trains running?

Take That will have been a trio for 10 years in September

Greater Anglia is running a normal service ahead of the concert, with extra trains , external laid on to cope with the great getaway after the show.

A 22:50 service to Lowestoft is followed by trains to Cambridge, Great Yarmouth, Sheringham, Ipswich and Ely. A final train leaves for Great Yarmouth at 23:40.

Services are expected to be very busy, with passengers advised to purchase tickets in advance to avoid long queues at the station's payment machines.

"We will do as much as we can to make journeys as easy as possible and there will also be extra staff on hand to provide help and information," said Greater Anglia customer service manager, James Reeve.

What can I take with me?

All bags will be searched and any bag bigger than an A4 piece of paper is not permitted. Nor is any food and drink, other than one 500ml clear, sealed bottle of water per person.

Rain is forecast so have your poncho ready - brollies are not allowed.

Other things you cannot bring into Carrow Road include:

Professional cameras and recording equipment; selfie sticks

Signs and banners; whistles

Glass; cans; bottles; flasks; aerosols

Refreshments and official merchandise will be available to buy at the stadium, which is cashless.

Are there any road closures?

Motorists have been warned of delays before and after the concert

Norwich City said some "traffic management" would be in place ahead of the concert. Road closures will kick in immediately after the show to allow pedestrians to leave safely.

Temporary signs near the stadium warn motorists of long delays between 15:00 and 22:30 on Tuesday.

What have police said?

Police officers outside Carrow Road stadium

Police officers will be in and around the stadium

Norfolk Police said uniformed and plain-clothed officers had been in the Carrow Road and Riverside area in the lead-up to Tuesday's gig, and would provide a presence on the night.

A team had been creating "a network of vigilance" among businesses and the local community, to help disrupt criminal activity, including terrorism, it added.

Digital screens have been set up to explain how to get in touch if concert-goers see anything suspicious.

"It is expected that thousands of fans will be travelling to the stadium on Tuesday afternoon so please plan ahead and respect each other," a statement added.

"We will be in and around the venue to ensure that you have an enjoyable and safe evening.

"We are always happy to have a chat, so please say hello."

Justice Department sues Live Nation and Ticketmaster for monopolizing concert industry

By Robert Legare , Aimee Picchi

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 7:57 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The Justice Department filed a federal lawsuit Thursday accusing Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation of illegally monopolizing the live entertainment industry to the detriment of concertgoers and artists alike.

In a 128-page civil suit filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, federal officials allege that Live Nation has illegally thwarted competition and unduly burdened consumers in part through its ownership of Ticketmaster, which effectively gives it control over much of the market for live entertainment.

Justice Department officials said Thursday they are seeking structural changes to how the company does business, which could include breaking apart the two entities.

In 2022, Ticketmaster's mishandling of ticket sales for Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour prompted enormous public outcry over Live Nation's hold on the entertainment and ticketing industries. The Justice Department's Antitrust Division was already investigating the company when the Swift fiasco unfolded, CBS News previously reported.

The lawsuit

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the suit at the Justice Department, laying out the core accusations in the complaint.

"We allege that Live Nation has illegally monopolized markets across the live concert industry in the United States for far too long. It is time to break it up. The American people are ready for it," said Garland, a known Swift fan, in a not-so-subtle nod to one of her songs .

Joined by 29 states and the District of Columbia, the federal suit accused the entertainment giant of blocking innovation in the industry by establishing what officials referred to as a "self-reinforcing 'flywheel,'" using its various business components to capture all fees associated with concerts.

This flywheel, according to the complaint, allows the company to charge customers fees, and then use that revenue to attract major artists and lock them into longer-term deals to sell more tickets.

A graphic included in the Justice Department's lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster, showing the "flywheel" the company uses to reinforce various parts of its business.

"Live Nation's monopoly, and the anticompetitive conduct that protects and maintains its monopoly, strikes a chord precisely because the industry at stake is one that has for generations inspired, entertained, and challenged Americans," the complaint said. "Conduct that subverts competition here not only harms the structure of the live music industry and the countless people that work in that industry, but also damages the foundation of creative expression and art that lies at the heart of our personal, social, and political lives."

In 2010, federal regulators, including those at the Justice Department, approved the merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster, which ultimately allowed the promotional, venue and ticketing industries to be brought under the control of one corporation.

Thursday's lawsuit, however, said the relationship has since hurt American consumers and presents barriers to artists. Senior Justice Department officials alleged that Live Nation and Ticketmaster worked to unlawfully squeeze consumers for money even after artists get paid, through what they characterized as monopolistic intermediaries.

According to the complaint, Live Nation has strong-armed businesses with financial retaliation if they engage with its competitors and has wielded its control over the market by threatening to pull future events if venues opt not to use Ticketmaster exclusively.

Such control, the Justice Department said, has meant concertgoers pay more for tickets and touring artists sign long-term agreements to solely perform at venues that use the ticket-selling program.

In a statement, Live Nation said the suit "won't solve the issues fans care about relating to ticket prices, service fees, and access to in-demand shows." The company said that "[c]alling Ticketmaster a monopoly may be a PR win for the DOJ in the short term, but it will lose in court because it ignores the basic economics of live entertainment," noting that "competition has steadily eroded Ticketmaster's market share and profit margin."

"We will defend against these baseless allegations, use this opportunity to shed light on the industry, and continue to push for reforms that truly protect consumers and artists," Live Nation said.

At a Senate hearing in January 2023, artists testified about the hold Live Nation had over them. Clyde Lawrence, of the band Lawrence, testified that Live Nation's power lies in the fact that it's the promoter, the venue and the ticket company.

"Because Live Nation owns the venue, fronts the money for the show and sells the tickets, they have outsized power when negotiating with artists," he told the panel, offering an example: For one show, Lawrence set ticket prices at $30. After Ticketmaster added a 40% fee, fans paid $42 per ticket. And after paying for facility costs, the band made $12 per ticket — about half of which went to covering the costs of touring.

Why Jennifer Lopez Is 'Sad' Yet 'Relieved' to Cancel Tour: 'She Needs to Take Care of Herself' (Exclusive Source)

"Life is a lot right now. As sad as she was to cancel the tour, she's also relieved," a source tells PEOPLE

Jennifer Lopez is taking time to recalibrate her life after canceling her upcoming tour .

A source close to the singer-actress tells PEOPLE that Lopez is "devastated" to call off her summer concert tour but understands the extra time to dedicate to herself and her loved ones is key.

"Life is a lot right now. As sad as she was to cancel the tour, she’s also relieved. She needs to take care of herself," says the source.

"The decision was something that her team encouraged," the source adds. "Everyone is supportive of her focusing on family right now."

Lopez's  This Is Me... Live tour, in support of her latest album but also rebranded to be a greatest hits concert, was set to kick off June 26 in Orlando, Florida, and travel for shows in Austin, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Toronto, New York City, Boston and more. It would have been her first tour since 2019's It's My Party Tour.

On May 31, however, Live Nation announced that the tour was canceled because Lopez, 54, is "taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends."

Hector Vivas/Getty

She said in her own message to her fans, "I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary."

"I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," added Lopez. "I love you all so much. Until next time."

Darren Gerrish/Getty

The news comes as sources told PEOPLE that Lopez's marriage with husband Ben Affleck is "not in the best place at the moment ." The two, who famously rekindled their decades-old romance before marrying in 2022, have been living under different roofs while both in Los Angeles.

Still, Lopez and Affleck, 51, have come together to put on a united front at different events and milestones for their kids. Lopez and her kids, 16-year-old twins Max and Emme, attended Affleck's daughter Violet's high school graduation on May 30, alongside Affleck's ex-wife Jennifer Garner and their other two kids, Seraphina, 15, and Sam, 12.

Lopez and Affleck were again spotted at Sam's basketball game in Los Angeles June 2, sharing a kiss on the cheek outside the sporting event .

"The graduation was a big deal. Jennifer wanted to celebrate it," one insider told PEOPLE, adding that the "very family-oriented" couple "want to put the kids first" as they work through the "heartbreaking" marriage strain.

How much money does Taylor Swift get for each concert and how much does she charge for performing at the Bernabeu in 2024?

Concerts to take place on May 29 and 30.

T he Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is set to host two highly anticipated concerts by Taylor Swift on May 29 and 30, marking her only performances in Spain during 'The Eras Tour'. These shows in Madrid are part of her European tour, following stops in Paris, Stockholm, and Lisbon.

With both concerts already sold out, the American singer is expected to experience an electric atmosphere at the iconic venue, adding significantly to her earnings.

The Real Madrid stadium's capacity for such events will allow around 65,000 people to attend each concert, totaling approximately 130,000 attendees over the two days. Ticket prices for the event varied, with the cheapest tickets costing around 85 euros and the most expensive reaching 226.50 euros.

Taylor Swift's earnings at the Santiago Bernabeu

On average, each attendee is estimated to spend about 150 euros on tickets. This calculation suggests that Swift could generate close to 975,000 euros per concert. However, it is important to note that this figure represents gross revenue, which will be distributed among various parties involved in the event.

In addition to ticket sales, Swift will earn from merchandise sold at the concerts. Items from 'The Eras Tour' range from clothing to memorabilia, adding another revenue stream.

The artist's team will also benefit from sales of food and beverages consumed by concert-goers during the three-hour performance.

Economic impact on Madrid

The economic impact of Swift 's concerts extends beyond the direct revenue generated from ticket and merchandise sales.

The influx of fans is expected to bring significant financial benefits to Madrid's local economy, particularly in the hospitality sector. It is projected that the concerts will inject around 25 million euros into the local economy, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and other businesses.

The Emails at the Heart of the Government’s Ticketmaster Case

Live Nation Entertainment, which owns Ticketmaster, is accused of violating antitrust laws. The Justice Department drew on the concert behemoth’s internal communications in its lawsuit.

A large sign between a building and palm trees reads "Live Nation."

By Ben Sisario

In its lawsuit accusing Live Nation Entertainment, the concert behemoth that owns Ticketmaster, of being an illegal monopoly, the Justice Department drew on a raft of internal communications that offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at the industry.

The Justice Department argued in an extensive complaint filed on Thursday that the merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster, which went through in 2010, had hurt competition, hindered innovation and resulted in higher ticket prices and fees for consumers. It called for the company to be broken up.

In response, Live Nation, which is also the world’s largest concert promoter, has said that it is not a monopoly , and denied that it has the unilateral power to raise prices. Contrary to the government’s argument about its great power, Live Nation says it now faces more competition than ever, and that the Justice Department’s suit “won’t reduce ticket prices or service fees.”

Detailing its allegations, the government relied on eye-opening emails that it says were written by Live Nation’s chief executive, Michael Rapino, and other high-powered figures in the concert world.

Here are a few of those accusations.

A potential rival’s Kanye West concert

One episode from 2021 goes to the heart of the Justice Department’s allegations that Live Nation went to extreme lengths to protect its competitive edge.

Late that year, the government says, Live Nation “threatened commercial retaliation” against the private equity firm Silver Lake, which had an investment in TEG, an Australian ticketing and promotions company that was involved in a highly anticipated benefit show by Kanye West and Drake at the L.A. Coliseum. Silver Lake had also invested in Oak View Group, a venue management company with close ties to Live Nation.

According to the government, Rapino complained to an Oak View Group executive that he viewed TEG as a competitor, and Oak View Group relayed to the investor that Live Nation was “not happy.” Rapino then told Silver Lake he was “all in” with Oak View Group, “where the big play lies with venues — why insult me with this investment in ticketing/promotions etc.”

TEG had arranged a deal to sell some tickets through StubHub. According to the complaint, Live Nation sought to “frustrate” TEG by blocking those tickets, and as a result “hundreds of StubHub’s customers were refused entry to the event.”

Live Nation then “threatened to pull its support from Oak View Group,” and Irving Azoff, the powerful artist manager who was a co-founder of Oak View Group, refused to allow TEG to promote shows with any of the artists he managed. Azoff told Rapino he would demand that Silver Lake sell TEG, and Rapino replied, “Love ya.” According to the complaint, Silver Lake sought to sell TEG — and offered it to Live Nation.

In a detailed response to the Justice Department’s lawsuit, Dan Wall, Live Nation’s executive vice president of corporate and regulatory affairs, said the claim that Live Nation had threatened Silver Lake “reveals not only a disregard for the facts, but also deep hypocrisy.”

Rapino’s complaint, Wall said, was “fundamentally the same” as a concern by both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission over “private equity companies making multiple investments in the same industry because of competitive ‘entanglements.’”

In a separate statement about the concert at the L.A. Coliseum, Live Nation said: “The only thing that we did was frustrate TEG’s efforts to put tickets directly on the secondary market in violation of our exclusive rights over primary tickets.” Silver Lake did not respond to a request for comment.

A competitor turned ‘hammer’

Live Nation, the government says, initially viewed Oak View Group as one of its “Biggest Competitor Threats.” But soon the companies “colluded,” the government says, to “avoid competing with each other, and chart a mutually beneficial business plan to cement Live Nation’s dominance.”

Oak View Group, the government says, operated as an “agent” for Live Nation, even calling itself a “pimp” and a “hammer” for the larger company, sometimes delivering threats on behalf of Live Nation to venues that were considering dropping Ticketmaster for another ticket provider.

The government’s complaint quotes from what it says are emails from 2016 in which Rapino complains to Oak View Group executives about their intention to promote shows with an artist that Live Nation works with. Oak View Group backs down, with the company’s chief executive — who is not identified in the complaint, but is Timothy Leiweke — saying: “Our guys got a bit ahead. All know we don’t promote and we only do tours with Live Nation.”

Wall, the Live Nation executive, said in response that Oak View Group “has never been a concert promoter, nor aspired to be one,” and that it was simply looking to fill the occasional dark night at one of its venues. “To portray that as an agreement not to compete in concert promotion is farcical,” Wall wrote. A representative of Oak View Group declined to comment.

A ticketing rival at Barclays Center

In early 2023, The New York Times broke the news that Barclays Center, the arena in Brooklyn, was dropping SeatGeek, the young and aggressive ticketing business it had just entered a seven-year contract with, and signing a new deal with Ticketmaster.

The abrupt change raised eyebrows in the industry, and led to questions about whether Live Nation had denied the venue access to Live Nation’s biggest tours as retaliation for switching from Ticketmaster to SeatGeek. Live Nation denied that at the time, and a review of concert data by The Times was inconclusive. The number of Live Nation-promoted shows at Barclays had indeed fallen since SeatGeek took over, but so had those by independent promoters.

The Justice Department’s case omits Barclays’ name from the suit, but Wall confirmed it in a conference call with investors late Thursday. The government quotes from an email that it says was sent to the venue’s chief executive from “a senior Live Nation executive” who had heard the venue was switching to SeatGeek: “Anyways,” the email says, “should think about bigger relationship with LN not just who is writing a bigger sponsorship check,” adding a “wink” emoji.

According to the government, Live Nation “followed through on its threats, re-routing concerts to other venues.”

In response, Live Nation said, “We categorically deny that any concerts were rerouted to retaliate against their decision to go to SeatGeek.”

Buying rival companies

The government argues that Live Nation has acquired a number of companies with an aim to eliminate rivals in both concert promotion and ticketing.

Among the examples the government cites are United Concerts in Utah, which used a regional ticketing company called SmithsTix. According to the what the government says were internal communications at Live Nation, the company wanted a greater ticketing foothold in Utah but chose not to acquire SmithsTix because doing so would “require us to go to the DOJ.” Instead, Live Nation bought United Concerts in 2017 and converted its venues to Ticketmaster; SmithsTix, it said, ultimately went out of business.

Another is AC Entertainment in Tennessee, which had played a part in the Bonnaroo festival there. Live Nation took a controlling stake in the company in 2016. A Live Nation executive viewed the economics of the deal as “not super exciting,” but called it “a defensive move” against AEG, according to the complaint. In 2018, Live Nation bought Frank Productions, a promoter in Wisconsin that used ticketers other than Ticketmaster; Live Nation acquired the company and “flipped the venues to exclusive Ticketmaster contracts.”

In response, Wall said the deal for AC Entertainment was made with a promoter who was in his 60s and wanted to retire. “Live Nation did not have a Knoxville office, so for $15 million it made the deal,” Wall wrote. “Seriously? The DOJ is challenging that?”
