Here's a guide to the best train rides in North Carolina that you (and the whole family) won’t want to miss.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Nestled in Bryson City, roughly a one-hour drive from Asheville, is the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad takeoff station. There are two train types — an old-fashioned steam-powered locomotive and a more modern diesel option — as well as several routes varying in distance, time, and theme, though all provide a scenic experience.

One of the most popular trips is the Nantahala Gorge Excursion , a 4.5-hour round-trip journey offering a pit stop to soak in the mountaintop views. Or, you can hop aboard the Tuckasegee River Excursion , a four-hour trek that includes a stop in a small historic town for some quick shopping.  

Locals and tourists alike swarm to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad for its special Polar Express train during the holidays, which includes cookies, hot cocoa, and a Santa sighting, as well as encourages passengers of all ages to wear their pajamas while on board. Couples can enjoy dinners with a wine pairing, a Carolina moonshine tasting, a murder mystery party, and other themed rides that make for a fun date night.

Ticket prices range based on age and class of service, including first class, premium open-air gondola, coach plus, crown, and coach class. Prices start at $58 for adults and $33 for kids ages two to 12. 

Tweetsie Railroad

A kid's wonderland can be found in the small, quaint village of Blowing Rock, deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Tweetsie Railroad is known for its adventure park offering themed experiences, including Thomas the Train, a ghost ride, and a holiday adventure. In addition to railroad trips, the admission fee includes access to kid-friendly amusement park rides, a deer petting zoo, live interactive shows, and more. Seasonal events like a dog frisbee competition and visiting musicians also add to the character and charm of this tiny town experience. Daily admission tickets are $60 for adults, $40 for children ages three to 12, and free for kids under two. 

New Hope Valley Railway

If experiencing a historic train ride is on your wish list, consider the New Hope Valley Railway . This four-mile, hour-long trip from Bonsal to New Hill is known as the "Triangle’s Train" as it’s located in the Piedmont region of the state (or the Triangle), connecting Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill.

Passengers aboard this vintage locomotive will wind through tall pine trees, a signature of the state. Throughout the year, seasonal experiences are on offer, including summer adventures with Thomas the Train, an Easter egg hunt in April, and more. Check the website for special events that sell food and drinks while aboard the train, too. 

While some seasonal rides may cost more, general admission is $11 for kids ages two to 12, $14 for adults, and $13 for seniors 60 years and older. 

North Carolina Transportation Museum

For a daytime excursion fit for the whole family, consider visiting Spencer, North Carolina, a small town situated between Charlotte and Greensboro. This Rowan County destination is the home of the North Carolina Transportation Museum , which was once the Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive factory in the southeast. 

Here, you and your travel companions can learn about various forms of transportation in the Tar Heel State over the years, from aviation and railroads to automobiles and more. You can tour the Barber Junction Depot, a train station built in 1898 that’s now the visitor center. 

And, of course, no visit would be complete without a train ride. The train takes you through the museum’s 60-acre campus and lasts about 25 minutes. Ride availability changes each month, but you can hop board Fridays to Sundays (and select Thursdays and Easter Monday) from March to May. From June to Labor Day, you can enjoy rides from Thursdays to Sundays. Like other railroads in the state, themed rides are part of the fun, including Easter bunny excursions and Wine & Dine date-night events. 

Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and active-duty military members, $8 for children ages three to 12. Admission for kids under three is free.

Craggy Mountain Line

For those seeking craft beer and mountain views, nothing hits the spot quite like Asheville . This vibrant city offers quirky experiences, including boozy rafting down the French Broad River, a tour of the largest privately owned home in America — the Biltmore Estate — and a train ride on the Craggy Mountain Line . Locals call it the "Asheville to Craggy Branch," a nonprofit organization that acquired the last three miles of the Craggy Mountain Line in 2001. 

They’ve turned it into a fun way to experience and view the Blue Ridge Mountains, whether for a family-friendly adventure or romantic afternoon date. There are no frills or extra bells and whistles; it’s simply a quick tour on a historic train. 

Tickets are $15 per person, with kids three and under for free. You can also rent the railroad with a group for two hours for weddings or bachelorette parties. For travel planning, remember the train only runs on Saturdays at 4 p.m.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad History

All Bryson City NC train rides begin and end at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad’s Bryson City train depot.

GSMR is part of American Heritage Railways’ goal to preserve railroad history for future generations.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad involves 53 miles of track, with 25 bridges and 2 tunnels. They traverse rivers, cross mountain valleys filled with wildflowers in Spring and Summer, and pass old   mountain towns .

Historically, the rails reached the town of Asheville in 1880, and by 1881 they continued another 116 miles to Murphy NC. They connected the far reaches of Western NC to the world much faster than long, tough wagon rides.

These lines were busiest during WWII, when the Fontana Dam  was built. After the Great War ended, the popularity of passenger train traffic dropped off to virtually nothing. By 1985, freight train traffic was also in steady decline.

GSMR trains began to run as a tourist-focused enterprise back in 1988, and today the company carries over 200,000 passengers a year on the top train rides in North Carolina!

1. Nantahala Gorge Excursion

GSMR’s longest trip is their ever-popular Nantahala Gorge Excursion, which covers 44 miles and takes about 4.5 hours.

This NC mountain train ride runs through the Nantahala National Forest, along the Nantahala and Tennessee Rivers , and crosses a trestle over Fontana Lake.

It departs from the Bryson City Depot, has a one-hour layover at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (famous for its whitewater rafting tours ), and returns to Bryson City.

There are several classes of service available. First class has assigned seating, dining, and limited bar service. There are also open-air gondola cars and several other classes of closed cars.

Nantahala Gorge Excursion prices range from $58-$94 for adults and $33-$64 for kids ages 2-12, depending on the class and time of year you visit.

2. Tuckasegee River Excursion

Another hugely popular train ride in Bryson City is GSMR’s Tuckasegee River Excursion, which is a 32-mile round-trip adventure to Dillsboro NC.

This trip includes an 80-minute layover in the historic town of Dillsboro, which is known for its charming craft shops, unique restaurants , and a laid-back but welcoming personality.

Classes of service available on this trip include First Class (only in November and December), Crown Class, Coach Class, and Open Air Gondola.

Tuckasegee River Excursion prices range from $58-$124 for adults and $33-$64 for kids ages 2-12, depending on the class and time of year you visit.

3. The Polar Express

Every year during Winter , the Bryson City railroad transforms from a historic mountain railway into The Polar Express train, a uniquely immersive Christmas experience!

This festive 75-minute adventure includes live performers, music from the film, “Hot Chocolate” (both the song and the drink), and a cookie. Once you reach “The North Pole,” Santa climbs aboard to visit with all the kids. 

Dressing in pajamas is encouraged, and all riders receive a silver sleigh bell as a special souvenir. You can also enjoy singing Christmas carols for the return trip to Bryson City.

The Polar Express runs multiple times daily from early November through December, but they sell out well in advance. Tickets run from $44-$62.25 for adults and from $29-$62.25 for kids ages 2 to 12.

4. Carolina Shine Moonshine Experience

The Carolina Shine Moonshine Experience is an all-adult car offered on select Nantahala Gorge Excursion train rides . In our experience, it may be the most fun of the various dinner train rides in the Smokies!

All guests get a chance to sample craft moonshine from local distilleries on the First Class train car. After the tastings , moonshine-infused cocktails such as Copper Cola and Moonshiner’s Mimosa will be available for purchase.

Early rides come with a choice of Cheesy Shrimp & Grits or Cheesy Ham Hash Brown Casserole. Excursions departing after 2PM will feature Cajun-seasoned Pulled Pork BBQ with Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce.

Carolina Shine Moonshine Experience tickets range from $119-$134, and are available only for adults ages 21 and up.

5. Uncorked Wine Experience

Also offered on select GSMR Nantahala Gorge Excursions (though much more sparsely), Uncorked is a unique wine experience that offers a more refined take on scenic train rides in North Carolina.

Guests on this trip get 4 samples of specially chosen wines , plus a 4-course dinner that includes a cheese plate starter, a salad, entree (Surf ‘n’ Turf or Vegetarian), and a dessert.

Noted that special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice, and every passenger will receive a souvenir GSMR stemless wine glass.

Tickets for the Uncorked train ride start at $169 per person, and only adults ages 21+ are allowed.

6. Smoky Mountain Beer Run

Craft beer is huge in the State of North Carolina , and the town of Asheville NC has even been dubbed “Beer City USA!”

GSMR offers a special Smoky Mountain Beer Run on their Tuckasegee River Excursion, serving 2 half-pint pours en route to a layover (and more beer samples) at the Innovation Station brewery in Dillsboro NC.

All beer runs are themed to stir up a party atmosphere, and the food menu for the ride is matched to the theme.

Smoky Mountain Beer Run tickets cost $114 and are available for adults ages 21 and up.

7. Bunny Hopper Express

There are a few different Christmas -themed train rides in North Carolina, but the Bunny Hopper Express is a rare Easter-oriented excursion.

This family-friendly special event only runs for a couple of days over one Spring weekend (March 29-30, 2024).

It includes train-hopping bunnies sneaking aboard for a free ride, an Easter egg hunt, and a giveaway bag, with lots of fun things to do during the ride.

Bunny Hopper Express tickets run from $59-$87 for adults, and from $35-$61 for kids ages 2 to 12. Infants under age 2 ride for free, except on the First Class car, which costs $19.

8. Dollywood Express Train Ride

Though it’s sometimes listed as a Gatlinburg train ride, the Dollywood Express is actually about 20 minutes north in Pigeon Forge TN.

It’s the only Great Smoky Mountains train ride in Tennessee, powered by a 110-ton, coal-fired steam engine that takes visitors on a 5-mile journey through the area’s stunning natural scenery.

This is the original attraction in Dolly Parton’s Dollywood theme park, departing from the depot once every hour on a first-come, first-served basis.

Affectionately known as the Triangle’s Train, this railway right outside of Raleigh offers scenic rides on vintage trains as part of the North Carolina Railway Museum’s mission to preserve and share North Carolina’s railroad history. Each season (lasting roughly from April through December), the railway takes passengers along a 4-mile historic track through piney woods and over a trestle on an hour-long round trip from Bonsal to New Hill and back. The open-air train cars allow you to feel the breeze on your face as you traverse the gorgeous North Carolina landscape. New Hope Valley’s Operate-a-Loco program gives hardcore railfans the chance to drive a train by spending an hour at the throttle on an 8-mile trip!

Tweetsie Railroad

This Wild West theme park in Blowing Rock, North Carolina is all about family fun. There are rides, regular live performances, a deer park zoo, and a range of activities for the entire family. But the park’s most defining and beloved feature is the historic trains for which the park is named. Guests can climb aboard Engine No. 12 or Engine No. 190 for a 3-mile cruise around the park’s grounds. Along the way, you’ll get gorgeous views of the North Carolina mountains and rolling hills, and in the fall, it’s a great place to seek out colorful foliage . Fun fact: Engine No. 12 is the last surviving steam locomotive of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad, which ran from Johnson City, Tennessee to Boone, North Carolina, from 1919 to 1940.

North Carolina Transportation Museum

Ride and learn at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. The historic site was once home to Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility in the Southeast; today it is a museum that celebrates all types of transportation history—railways included! Admission to the museum, plus a 25-minute train ride through the 60-acre site (complete with onboard history narration) only costs $12. For a romantic evening, reserve your seats for Wine & Dine on the Rails. On the very special ride, you’ll be treated to cocktail hour, followed by a leisurely train ride paired with a three-course meal and wine. Be on the lookout for a special St. Patrick’s Day Train come March, as well!

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

North Carolina’s most popular passenger railroad sits in the heart of Bryson City and gives riders the chance to see some of the state’s greatest sights—Fontana Lake, the Fontana Trestle, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Nantahala National Forest, the Tuckasegee River—all from the comfort of a train car. Popular rides include the Nantahala Gorge Excursion , a 4.5-hour roundtrip jounrey traveling along the Tennessee and Nantahala River where you’ll see Fontana Trestle, Fontana Lake, and the breathtaking Nantahala Gorge, and the Tuckasegee River Excursion , a 4-hour ride through quiet countryside to Dillsboro, where you’ll have an hour and a half to deboard and check out the quaint historic town before heading back to the station.

Head to small-town Woodfin, a suburb of Asheville, and support the Craggy Mountain Line, a nonprofit formed in 2001 to obtain the last three miles of the Craggy Mountain Line. Today a 3.5-mile track takes visitors through the beautiful North Carolina countryside for just $15. Like clockwork, trains run at 4 p.m. every Saturday afternoon. If you’ve got a big family or have a celebration coming up, you can rent the entire railroad in 2-hour increments for groups of up to 25.

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Scenic Train

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers scenic train excursions through the North Carolina mountains along Nantahala and Tuckasegee Rivers, across valleys and through tunnels. All of the train rides depart from the depot in downtown Bryson City (near Cherokee ). Their variety of trips and special event trains (like the Polar Express - read more ) are ideal for a memorable experience! Ride in vintage open-air cars, climate-controlled cars, or first-class dining options.

Nantahala Gorge Excursion Ride along the rushing Nantahala River. This 4.5-hour excursion carries you 44 miles to the Nantahala Gorge and back. The historic Trellis Bridge takes you across Fontana Lake . Arrive at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) for a one-hour layover on the river. Steam Excursions After a two-year restoration of 1942 Engine #1702, you can book a steam excursion on many dates throughout the year, usually May-October. Before and after the ride, get a close-up look at this remarkable locomotive and watch a demonstration of the only man-powered turntable in the country near the depot. Train Seating Options & Tips

• See their website for a full list of COVID safety measures.
• Most excursions have a full-service concession car with snacks, lunch items, and beverages (including alcoholic drinks) for purchase. Or you can pick up snacks or lunch at their cafe in the Depot before your ride. First-class includes a meal. 
• Standard Seating (Coach Class) is in restored vintage coaches that feature windows that open for fresh-air viewing, ceiling fans, and heat for cooler days.
• Open Air Gondolas are created from retired baggage and flatbed cars, with long padded outward-facing seats for the panoramic views.
• In Crown Class, relax in restored coaches dating from 1925, with larger windows for better viewing and climate control. Get a souvenir tumbler to fill with a fountain soda.
• The First-Class riding experience is one-of-a-kind! Travel in comfort and style in a 1940s-era bar, lounge, and dinner cars. Have lunch served by the car’s private attendant, and receive a souvenir tumbler with fountain soda and an embroidered tote bag gift. First-class cars are climate-controlled and full bar service is available.
• For passengers who need special assistance for wheelchair accessibility, there is one car with a hydraulic lift and golf cart for transportation from the parking area. Be sure to call well in advance to make arrangements at 800-872-4681. Once arriving at the depot, be sure the ticket office is aware of your need for assisted boarding.
• Arrive early and stay late to enjoy Bryson City's charming downtown.

Great Smoky Train Excursions & Events 2024

• February-September: Uncorked (Select Dates) - All-Adult First Class ride with a private attendant, wine tastings, sampling of cheeses, and a surf and turf meal. (21+)
• March 29-30, 2024: Bunny Hopper Express -  This 4.5-hour round trip special event train departs at 10:30 AM and travels along the Nantahala Gorge River to a picturesque layover destination with Egg Hunt. Train activity bag and Easter treat included. Passengers should be on the lookout for those train-hopping bunnies who have snuck on to take a free ride! 
• June-September: Moonshine Experience (Select Dates) - Hop on board the all-adult first-class Moonshine Car serving the handcrafted, triple-distilled shine - including Apple Pie, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cherry, and more flavors. Operating on the Nantahala Gorge excursion, your private attendant serves you a delicious BBQ meal. (21+)
• November 7-December 31, 2024: Great Smokies Polar Express Train - Journey through the quiet wilderness to the North Pole. Directions: Located in downtown Bryson City (45 Mitchell Street), about 65 miles west of Asheville. From Asheville, drive I-40 West to exit 27. Take US 74 for 40 miles to Exit 67 for Bryson City. At the end of the exit ramp, bear right. At the first light, turn right onto Main Street, then left onto Everett Street. New hope valley railway / north carolina railway museum (ncrm).

We are celebrating many milestones during our 2024 season. Come out and visit us! The NCRM operates New Hope Valley Railway so that visitors can experience a ride on our historic railroad. Also affectionately known as the “Triangle’s Train”, it travels along 4 miles of historic railroad track through piney woods and over a trestle on an hour-long, round trip from Bonsal to New Hill and back. In addition, on some ride days we also offer food and drinks for sale. Please keep in mind that we are only open to visitors during the times we run trains during scheduled ride days . Steam locomotive rides are not available at this time but our diesel locomotives travel down the same route and offer the same exciting excursions.

Tuckasegee River

Andrews valley rail tours – railbike ride, a breathtaking railbike ride.

Enjoy a 10-mile round trip through the natural beauty and spectacular views of the Appalachian Mountains aboard North Carolina’s First RailBike Tour. Be sure to bring your camera, and have it ready for the trip to the Historic Valley River Tunnel. Take in the views from our beautiful valley that offers you the opportunity to experience beautiful mountains, forests, and abundant wildlife. You’ll see crystal-clear mountain rivers and streams as you cross Historic open-deck railroad bridges on your trip to the tunnel. Once there you’ll have about 1/2 hour to check out the tunnel (which was hand carved by workers from Southern Railway in 1894) and the surrounding area. Please take care on your stroll as the terrain can get steep and rocky.

What to Expect

• Our RailBikes are electric motor assisted, similar to e-bikes
• Riders must be at least 4 years of age.
• There is a 275lb weight limit* (per person)
• Dress appropriately for the weather.** Remember you will be on an open-air RailBike.
• Bring something to drink, and a snack.
• Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled trip time and go to the Ticket Window and sign in – this is when you will sign your waiver.
• You will then be escorted to the RailBikes by our staff to be seated for very important SAFETY instructions.
• Parties that are larger than 4 will be seated on consecutive railbikes.

The Details of Our Scenic Rail Tours

When you reach the beautiful little mountain town of Andrews, NC proceed to the Historic Andrews Depot at 345 Locust Street. To start on your scenic rail tour, head around to the track side of the building to the ticket office. There you can check in for a reservation you've already made, or if you would like to walk in, please call ahead to see if seats are available. Before boarding you will sign a waiver for each member of your group. Please be sure to be at the Depot 30 minutes before your reservation time**. It's important to remember that your tour will last approximately 2 hours.

What to expect

• Our RailBikes are pedal motor-assisted, similar to e-bikes
• Riders must be at least 8 years of age .
• There is a 260lb weight limit (per person)
• Remember you will be on an open air RailBike.
• Bring something to drink, and a snack.
• When you arrive, go to the Ticket Window and sign in – this is when you will sign your waiver.
• You will then be escorted to the RailBikes by our staff to be seated for very important SAFETY instructions.

Once you have settled into your seat, be sure to pay close attention to the attendant for ride instructions - safety of our riders is our number one priority.

Now it's time to relax and enjoy the ride aboard North Carolina's First RailBike Tour, and don't forget to have your camera ready for the 5-mile trip to the Historic Valley River Tunnel. Take in the views from our beautiful valley that offers you the opportunity to experience beautiful mountains, forests, and abundant wildlife. You'll see crystal clear mountain rivers and streams as you cross Historic open deck railroad bridges on your trip to the tunnel. Once there you'll have about 1/2 hour to check out the tunnel (which was hand carved by workers from Southern Railway in 1894) and the surrounding area. Please take care on your stroll as the terrain can get steep and rocky.

After your break, you will re-embark for the 5-mile trip back to Andrews, and we're sure you'll see things you missed on the trip out, so don't forget that camera!

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on the morning of March 26  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city. 

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future. 

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access. 

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed. 

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes. 

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.    

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge? 

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping. 

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C. 

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA. 

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic. 

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).  

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship early Tuesday, was named after the American lawyer who wrote the lyrics of the national anthem. Construction of the bridge started in 1972 and was completed in March 1977.

Plans for the bridge began in the early 1970s, after traffic inundated the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, through which Interstate 895 crosses the harbor. When the bridge opened, The New York Times reported that construction costs had totaled $141 million, which is roughly $735 million in today’s dollars.

More than 12.4 million passenger and commercial vehicles crossed the bridge in 2023, according to a Maryland state government report .

The bridge itself spans 1.6 miles over the Patapsco River, but the crossing’s overall structure, including its connecting approaches, is almost 11 miles long. As part of Interstate 695, it is the outermost of three major crossings of the Baltimore Harbor.

Francis Scott Key was believed to be near the site of the future bridge in 1814 when he observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, where he served as quartermaster, during the War of 1812. The battle inspired Mr. Key to write a poem called “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” that would later be set to the music of a popular British tune and renamed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It became the national anthem in 1931.

After the bridge opened to the public, parts of it underwent renovation several times, including a $14 million project in 1986 to repair damage, improve safety and restore the bridge’s appearance.
