The drop-offs are a bit intense, but a certified mountain guide will be on hand to assist. Following the summit, the tour exits via Teixeira for a gentle end of the hike. Swimming with Dolphins

Swimming with Dolphins: is one of the most popular Madeira Island tours. Trips depart from the new Funchal Marina and are hosted by a team of experienced divers. Madeira has strict regulations for swimming with wild dolphins in order to preserve the natural habitat, and due to this, entering the water is not guaranteed. But in case swimming is not possible, guests receive a refund between the price of the observation trip and the swimming trip. Additionally, if no whales or dolphins are spotted, you can reschedule for free or receive a voucher valid for two years.

That being said, the rate of successful trips is quite high at 90%. And for successful tours, guests have the opportunity to swim with two species of dolphins, common dolphins and spotted dolphins. Upon entering the water, swimmers remain safely connected to the boat at all times and can enjoy gliding alongside dolphins in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. This is easily one of my favorite Madeira tours.

Best of Madeira’s West Tour

Best of Madeira’s West: this is another beautiful Madeira day trip that explores the west coast of the island. The tour departs from Funchal and passes through the charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. Following that, Cabo Girão Skywalk (the tallest seacliff in Europe) is next on the itinerary. Here, you can enjoy stepping out on the glass floor observation deck for jaw-dropping views below. The journey then continues up to Encumeada, where guests can enjoy sweeping views of both the north and south coasts of the island.

After that, the tour continues to wind up to Madeira’s highest plateau, and then down along the rugged north coast to São Vicente. A leisurely stop at Porto Moniz’s natural pool for lunch is next. Flagship Tour of Santa Maria de Colombo: A fun fact is that Christopher Colombus lived on Madeira’s neighboring island of Porto Santo. In fact, he married the governor’s daughter there, and it’s said he learned much about sailing while living off the coast of Madeira. Given that, it’s no wonder the following is one of the most popular Funchal tours.

The tour of Santa Maria de Colombo is a sailing trip aboard a replica of the Santa Maria, a 15th-century ship owned by Colombus. The tour includes a boat ride along the dramatic coastline to Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe. Following that is a swim in the sea, with water temperatures remaining temperate year-round. Additionally, dolphins and whales are occasionally spotted while sailing. Finally, the trip includes a taste of Madeira wine and honey cake to top off a beautiful day cruising the Atlantic.

Once on the levada walk, the trail leads to Levada do Risco, the first waterfall of the day. After that, the group makes its way to the famous 25 Fountains. Featuring 25 springs flowing into a beautiful natural pool, the spot is a lush wonderland. Hikers can take photos and cool off in the pool, and admire the steep cliff rising above. Finally, the tour exits through an old tunnel, taking another path back to the plateau above. As far as Madeira hiking tours go, it’s pretty solid.

Full Day Jeep Safari Tour: This Madeira Jeep Tour is an awesome way to see the best of the island in an off-beat way. The tour begins with a pickup in Funchal by your guide. Following a quick briefing, you depart for the sunny enclave of Ponta do Sol. There’s time for a coffee break before starting the drive up to Paul da Serra. Afterward, the safari heads to Santa viewpoint for a sweeping view of the north side of the island.

From there, the tour rumbles down the mountainside to the natural pools of Porto Moniz. Guests generally take the chance to grab lunch and take a dip in the volcanic pools, before drying off and continuing the journey. After that, the safari proceeds along the north coast to Seixal and São Vicente. The sea cliffs of Cabo Girão mark the final stop for the tour, before heading home to Funchal. The cable car itself is a few minutes’ walk from downtown Funchal, and takes 15 minutes to reach the village of Monte. Along the way, guests are treated to panoramic views of the Bay of Funchal. And Monte, at 1,025m above sea level, provides a stunning vista of the city and sea below.

Once at the top, you can choose to take the cable car back down or opt for a traditional Madeiran toboggan ride. These sleigh rides are a whirlwind journey through the past, and feature local men to steer you through the streets. Evidently, it’s a must-do on the island, and a quick way to return to Funchal! For all these reasons, the Botanical Garden cable car ticket is one of the best Funchal tours available on Get Your Guide Madeira.

The island happens to be one of the premier diving sites in the world, and this discovery dive is one of the best tours on Madeira. New divers will enjoy learning about the theory of scuba diving, before practicing some skills in a swimming pool. Once comfortable, you’ll be ready for the open water dive.

The dive will be around 45 minutes or less depending on your oxygen consumption and ocean conditions, with a maximum depth of 12 meters. In that time, you’ll experience the beauty of the underwater world, with your instructor safely by your side. To conclude the discovery dive, you’ll receive a stamp that can go towards an open water certification in the future. It’s one of the most unique and overlooked Madeira excursions out there, and one I highly recommend.

Northwest Madeira 4×4 Tour: This 4×4 adventure is a great full-day Madeira jeep tour. To start, you’ll be picked up at your hotel in a 4×4 vehicle. The journey then begins with a drive to Serra d’Água, before continuing to the village of Ginjas. After that, the jeeps climb to the heights of Paul de Serra for beautiful views of the laurel forests.

Next on the tour is a stop at Porto Moniz. The volcanic and man-made pools here are a relaxing way to spend the afternoon, before resuming the drive with stops at Seixal, São Vicente, and the rock formations at Ribeira da Janela. Finally, the tour stops for a short levada walk past a small village before wrapping up a great adventure day on the island. The valley features towering rock formations and untouched forests, while traditional homes dot the valley floor.

You can try traditional chestnut cake and pastries, as well as the local poncha (the drink of sailors). After that, you’ll make your way to Monte, where the last Austro-Hungarian emperor is buried. Finally, the tour ends with an exhilarating toboggan ride down Livramento, marking the end of one of my favorite less-traveled Madeira tours.

Due to Madeira’s volcanic background, it boasts diverse oceanside real estate prime for adventure. Guests can swim, climb, cliff jump, and snorkel along dazzling coastlines. Not to mention, the water is crystal clear and generally temperate.

This particular Madeira tour starts in Caniçal, known for its pristine waters. Guests of all ages are welcome, and guides are on hand to assist and teach safe coasteering. What’s more, the cliff jumps are all completely optional, and range from 1 to 10m high. All in all, it’s an exhilarating way to discover Madeira’s coastline.

Desertas Island Full-Day Catamaran Trip: This Catamaran trip is an excellent Madeira day trip to see the neighboring island of Desertas. The tour sets sail along the southern coast of Madeira, treating guests to gorgeous views. Once at the islands, you’ll enjoy a swim along the volcanic beach, before disembarking at Deserta Grande. It’s the only island accessible to visitors, as the larger chain is a protected nature reserve.

Given that, you’ll have the chance to enjoy its pristine waters, and possibly sight one of its protected monk seals. A visit to the conservation center at Deserta Grande then closes out the day before a return sail to Madeira.

About Madeira Island The name of the Island comes from the portuguese word for “wood” because all of its beautiful and ancient trees. It was discovered in 1419, is located in the Atlantic Ocean and is also known as the Pearl of the Atlantic because of its beauty. It’s 57Km long and 22Km wide with a population of 270,000 habitants. The highest mountain is the Pico Ruivo with na altitude of 1862m. Madeira Island is of volcanic origin, with very accentuated cliffs and mountains, full of breathtaking landscapes.

The explanations given during the tour are about the history of Madeira Island in general and specific talks about the places we visit. We share with you all the information about villages, the Laurissilva forest, plants, flowers and animals that inhabit the Island and also the Levadas, which are the channels of water that cross the mountains (which we can hike in one of our Jeep and Minivan tours). The tours are more personalized and made in small groups from 2 to 6 people, in the case of being a family or a group of friends we accept reservations up to 8 people. We never go in a caravan with other cars, it’s only you guys, the Defender Td5 and the guide. We always try, whenever possible, to avoid places with too many people, avoiding large concentrations of tourists.

We stop for lunch in a typical restaurant where you can taste typical food,like the black scabbard fish (Espada Preta), limpets (Lapas), and our the typical garlic bread Bolo de Caco.

In summer time with the sun inviting you to jump in the water and take a swim, and since we do not want to waste time having lunch in the restaurant, we stop to buy some sandwiches and drinks and then go directly to the Natural Pools of the Village of Porto Moniz or the Natural Pools in the Village of Seixal, to make a picnic and go for a swim (on our Amazing West Tour) All tours have a predefined itinerary of places to visit, but they can be changed due to the weather. We will always make the trip in a flexible way to go to places where the weather is better, where everyone can see and enjoy in the best way Madeira Island.

In this Madeira Jeep tour we have a little bit of everything; Sea, Mountains, Waterfalls and Natural Pools. We depart Funchal for Câmara de Lobos. After this we climb up to the cliff of Cabo Girão, 580m above of sea level, with an amazing glass platform, viewing some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Island. We continue to Lugar de Baixo, where we begin our adventure from sea level to the mountains climbing through ancient paths where we can see how the local people live and how they work the terraces of banana trees, vineyards among other types of agriculture. We will pass through the forest, mountains and valleys until we reach the Loch of the Moor with its magnificent view to the valley of Encumeada and Serra de Água. We pass through Bica da Cana, Paul da Serra and Fanal always with beautiful views of the valleys and mountains. When we reach the village of Ribeira da Janela we can see the amazing Northwest coast of the Island. We descend to sea level to visit the coast and enjoy the ocean view. Then we will go to Vila do Porto Moniz where we stop for lunch, and perhaps enjoy swimming in the Natural Pools. In the second part of our Jeep tour we leave Porto Moniz for the Vilage of Seixal and visit the waterfall of the Véu da Noiva and then on to São Vicente.

Old Forest - East Tour

On this tour we leave Funchal in the direction of the village da Camacha where we can visit the basketwork factory. We then continue through Vale Paraíso towards Poiso with an altitude of 1412m and then climb through the mountains to Pico do Arieiro at a height of 1818m. This is one of the most beautiful places with breathtaking views of the island of Madeira. We stay here for a while and walk a little. We then descend to Ribeiro Frio where we are in the Laurissilva Forest and we visit the trout nursery. We continue our adventure along old paths passing Cedro Gordo and Cruzinhas until we reach the Village de Santana where we will visit the typical straw houses (Colmo). After this stop we descend to the village of Faial with amazing views down to the sea and then continue towards Ponta de São Lourenço in the east of Madeira. This part of the Island is much drier and arid, but with a unique beauty due to its cliffs and colors.

We leave from Funchal to Ponta do Sol and begin our adventure at sea level ascending the mountains of the Island of Madeira, along old paths where we can see the terraces with banana trees and other types of agriculture.

We climb through the forest until we reach the plateau of Paul da Serra, passing Pico da Urze and Rabaçal where we can enjoy the magnificent view of the valleys. When we arrive at Fonte do Bispo we descend to the village of Ponta do Pargo with its Lighthouse, cliffs and dazzling views. We then go to the village of Fajã da Ovelha where we pass between cliffs and valleys down to the sea always with incredible landscapes. We park in the Village of Paul do Mar, where we can enjoy a walking tour by the sea and have lunch. Later we head for the very special and beautiful village of Jardim do Mar and then on to Calheta with its golden sandy beach.

We start from Funchal towards Garajau where the statue of Christ the King stands high up on the cliff. The view of the beach below and across to the city of Funchal really is a sight that should not to be missed. Then we continue to Santa Cruz and climb the Morena, with spectacular views of the mountains, the cliffs and the sea. We then continue on towards Lamaceiros passing by the old Laurissilva forest where we can enjoy walking a little along a Levada (water channel). Later we continue to the viewpoint of Portela where we can see the Village of Porto da Cruz. From Portela we descend down to the sea and towards Machico.

We depart from Funchal towards the São Vicente on the north coast of the island. Here we begin our adventure along the coast towards the village of Ponta Delgada. At the viewpont we can enjoy a unique view to the north coast and mountains. We then continue along the old paths and pass through the village of Boaventura and Arco de Jorge. Our adventure takes us to the heart of the island through the forest with impressive views and we descend the mountain through the valleys towards the sea and the beach of São Jorge. We continue towards Santana visiting the historical thatched roof houses. In the second part of the tour we head to the village of Porto da Cruz, where we visit the sugar cane mills to see the manufacture and distillation of white rum and sugar cane honey. We then head to the Portela viewpoint with its magnificent views and begin to descend towards the sea and the city of Machico.

A half-day tour, which begins in Funchal heading towards the famouse fishing village of Câmara de Lobos with colorful fishing boats docked in the harbor. After this stop, we continue on to Estreito Câmara de Lobos passing by many paths with views of the vineyards until we reach Fajã das Galinhas. Here we take a break to admire the astonishing views of the mountains and valleys. Next place to visit is the viewpoint of Boca dos Namorados, which overlooks Curral das Freiras (Valley of the Nuns). Through the mountains, we press on to Jardim da Serra for a coffee break or to taste the famous regional drink (Poncha). The tour finishes in Cabo Girão, the second highest cliff in Europe with a glass platform enriched by amazing views.

Venture off-road to explore the rugged mountains and rural villages of Madeira on this half-day safari from Funchal. Travel around the Fajã dos Padres cliffs in an open-top safari vehicle, take in the views from Boca dos Namorados and Jardim da Serra, and pass through traditional villages like Curral das Freiras and Fajã das Galinhas.

Start the day with a pick up from either your Funchal hotel or the cruise port. Head towards Fajã dos Padres, a cliff of 310 meters, to start the safari. As you drive up towards the hills, you will stop halfway to use the restrooms. Continue on your drive after that very brief break. You will then come to a serene spot where you will enjoy a view over the village of Jardim da Serra.

Next, descend toward the town of Fajã das Galinhas. Afterward, make a short visit to Boca dos Namorados to have a panoramic view of the village Curral das Freiras. The terrain of the valley keeps this quaint village isolated from other communities. Upon completion of the tour, your guide will begin the journey back to Funchal using the motorway.
