Mountain bike tour on Monte Tremalzo

  • Monte Altissimo Downhill
  • Punta Veleno
  • Skull Freeride Trail
  • Strada del Ponale
  • X-treme Biking

The mountain bike tour on the Monte Tremalzo is one of the absolute bike classics at Lake Garda. With long uphill sections, flowing downhill parts and breathtaking views of Lake Garda.

Since the Monte Tremalzo is part of the obligatory program of every mountain bike holiday at the Lake, we present bikers an alternative tour called " New Tremalzo ".

The 50 km tour starts in Riva del Garda . From there to Pregasina (on the old Ponale road) - Malga Palaer - Passo Rocchetta (trail no. 422) - Passo Guil.

Continue to Bocca Fortini - Passo Nota - Passo Tremalzo - Rifugio Garda . Have a rest before continuing to Malga Ciapa and on the way n. 222 - Malga di Fobia - Bocca Fobia , the highest point of the Trip.

Going back to Riva del Garda, take path no. 222 to the Valle Prà delle Noci and along a dirt road through the Valle San Michele and to Tremosine and Limone . From there you take the ferry back to Riva del Garda.

All in all, 2,200 meters of altitude are covered in the difficult tour .

We cycle the tour in a clockwise direction, starting in Molina di Ledro. The first section along the Strada del Ponale road proceeds downhill until the village of Prè di Ledro (470 m a.s.l.). There a cobbled mountain road branches off to the right which leads us to the hamlet of Leano. There we take the gravelled forest path to the Malga Vil and the Passo Guil mountain pass (1,211 m a.s.l.). After the arduous ascent, a breathtaking view on Lake Garda awaits us up here. Our route leads us to the junction at the Bocca dei Fortini and further to the Passo Nota mountain pass, where the Rif. degli Alpini mountain hut is located (last rest point before the queen’s stage).

Now the most beautiful but also most demanding section follows. The route proceeds along the actual Tremalzo mountain pass road now, constructed by the Italian Army in WWI. Several series of curves take us mostly uphill , for short sections also downhill again, through little tunnels and beneath the southerly exposed rock walls of the Tremalzo Group. From the 1,200 m a.s.l. at the Passo Nota, we cycle up to the highest point of our tour at 1,855 m a.s.l., to the gallery below the Corno della Marogna mountain. Immediately after the tunnel, the releasing downhill ride starts. First to the mountain hut at the Passo Tremalzo, then along the asphalt road down into the Val di Ledro valley. Here we use the cycle path to come back to Molina di Ledro again.

  • Starting point: Molina di Ledro (or any other village along the route)
  • Time required: 07:00 h

mountainbike tour riva del garda

  • The Zugspitze Starting at Germany's highest mountain, arrival at Lake Garda
  • Via Claudia Ride along the historic Romans roads
  • Perfect start This tour offers the perfect mix of sports and enjoyment

mountainbike tour riva del garda

First day – Arriving at Biberwier

You'll receive all travel documents about 14 days before departure. They contain the exact hotel address and further information. Please arrive by about 6:00 p.m. You'll meet your group and the guide. After discussing the tour, the group will go to dinner together.

Second day – From Biberwier to Imst/Pitztal – 40 km, 800 m elevation gain

With the mighty massif of the Zugspitze at our backs, our starting point is the first highlight. On lonely roads we'll climb the Fern Pass and roll by the crystal blue waters of Lake Fernstein with its romantic castle. Alpine landscape straight out of a picture book. We arrive and stay over night in Imst or in the Pitztal valley.

Third day – From Imst/Pitztal to Lafairs – 37 km, 850 m elevation gain

The main Alpine ridge is practically within reach. We'll have a great view of the Ötztal Alps and then we'll enjoy the fast downhill ride to the ice-blue Inn river. We'll reach Lafairs on an old Roman road. Relaxation in the sauna.

Fourth day – From Lafairs to the Vinschgau – 81 km, 940 m elevation gain

Even the Romans had respect for the Finstermünz Gorge, which is like an insurmountable bar blocking access to the Reschen Pass. Our mountain bikes master this challenge with flying colors and then Lake Reschensee lies at our feet. Mount Ortler's eternal ice within view, we'll zoom down into the Vinschgau Valley. Lovely South Tyrol - here we come!

Fifth day – From Vinschgau to Nals – 58 km, 720 m elevation gain

A day for the senses. With a friendly "hello", we'll pass Reinhold Messner's castle and enjoy cappuccino in legendary Merano. The typical lunch break will be in a Buschenschänke (mixture of restaurant and tavern) serving homemade elderberry juice and tasty bacon. Today's destination is the wine-growing town Nals in the Appiano municipality. We'll relax in our hotel spa.

Sixth day – From Nals to Trento – 74 km, 990 m elevation gain

Vineyards, Lake Kaltern and the view of the white Dolomites characterize our eventful day today. In the afternoon, we'll whiz down along the Adige river towards Trento, where the Counter-Reformation started. There will be plenty of time for shopping or excursions.

Seventh day – From Trento to Riva / Torbole – 58 km, 930 m elevation gain

Lake Garda is right around the corner! We'll pass quaint villages and admire the climbing acrobats in the wild Sarca Valley. Italy envelops us. Arrival at the mecca of mountain bikers. We'll enjoy a multi-course farewell dinner together.

Eighth day – Departure

After breakfast, the bikes are loaded onto the bus. Return trip by bus back to Biberwier. Upon arrival in Biberwier, everyone travels home individually.

My tip for Transalp Riva

mountainbike tour riva del garda

„ALPS is particularly proud of this tour. Although we initially called it 'Transalp light', it is anything but a tour with reduced content. Even experienced mountain bikers are absolutely delighted over and over again. This tour succeeds in bridging the gap between a great mountain bike experience and pleasurable cycling adventure. So it includes something for everyone. Even though I've ridden it more than 30 times, I still look forward to each new tour. Because there are always particularly nice people on this ride.“ Anne Kerz , ALPS bike guide for the Transalp Riva.

Tremalzo Garda XXL - Tour

Logo Garda Trentino

A challenging tour with breath-taking views. Lots of stamina required!

Signage: 733. Tremalzo Garda XXL - Tour

The tour touches on many iconic places of Garda Trentino: the Ponale Trail, overlooking the lake from imposing cliffs, Lake Ledro, irresistibly inviting to a refreshing dive, the serpentines of Tremalzo, a true legend for all bikers in the area, and Punta Larici, one of the most awe-inspiring places to look at Lake Garda from above. The refuges at Passo Tremalzo and Passo Nota offer a chance for a break and some food along the way.

Varianti: 733a. Variante Leano

Author’s recommendation

A short detour to the viewpoint at Punta Larici is a must! As it is very exposed and there is little space to move, you are advised to leave your bike at Bocca Larici, where there’s a bike rack.

Safety information.

ITRS - International Trail Rating System

The ITRS is an objective way to assess trails and routes from a biker’s perspective, evaluating four aspects:

  • Technical Difficulty: riding skill level needed
  • Endurance: combined effect of length, uphill and downhill
  • Wilderness: amount of planning required based on mobile phone reception, rescue options, water supply and wildlife
  • Exposure: consequences of a fall

Discover more about the ITRS system and check the classification of this tour in the photo gallery.

Safety Tips

  • Ride slowly on crowded trails, overtake with politeness and respect.
  • Cycle only on authorized and open trails.
  • Avoid muddy trails in order not to damage them further.
  • Respect public and private property.
  • Always be self-sufficient.
  • Do not cycle solo in remote areas.

Destination

Turn-by-turn directions.

The trail starts out on the lake front in Riva del Garda, in front of the Garda Trentino tourist information office. Take the cycle path which leads along Viale della Liberazione towards the centre of Riva. Pass the imposing structure of the Rocca and Piazza III Novembre, coming to the main road Gardesana Occidentale at the harbour. From here, follow the main road to the south for a few hundred metres. Before you reach the first tunnel on the Gardesana, keep to the right and take a steep cobbled ramp which leads to the start of the famous Ponale Trail. This stretch of the route, on a dirt road, has an incomparable panorama.

Without any alternative trail suitable for a bike we come to the end of the dirt road at the Ponale Alto Belvedere snack bar. At the nearby junction, keep right in the direction of Lake Ledro. Before the tunnel, turn left to cross the valley and the torrent avoiding the main road. Once on the road leading to Pregasina, go to the right and then, before the bridge, take the little road on your left. The trail to follow to get to Lake Ledro is clear. Cycle through Prè and Molina as far as the lake.

With the Pile Dwelling Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in view, we turn left to take Via al Lago and continue skirting the lake along Via Val Maria to Pur. At the crossroads we keep to the right, pass the beach and continue along Via Mal Maria. After about 1 km, at a hairpin bend, we take the cycle path on the right, which leads to the Pieve sailing club. From here we continue along Via Alzer and turn left at the first opportunity to rejoin the cycle path. This briefly rejoins Via Alzer and then turns left and runs alongside the stream for 1 km, after which it joins Via Imperiale near Pieve. We head left and follow the signs for the cycle path for about 6 km. The cycle path runs entirely on tarmac, alternating between exclusively bicycle and mixed stretches.

Just before reaching the Lago d'Ampola nature reserve, almost at the end of the cycle path, we take the dirt road on the left, a rather steep shortcut to the provincial road to Tremalzo. From here the route to Passo Tremalzo is clearly defined and runs entirely on a tarmac road for about 15 km. From the pass we continue along the old First World War military road towards Bocca di Val Marza, pass the tunnel and begin the descent towards Passo dei Gatùm, Passo Prà della Rosa and Passo Nota, characterised by the breathtaking curves that are among the highlights of this route. From Passo Nota the route becomes less steep and presents a slight up and down with beautiful views of Lake Garda, always on a dirt road. We thus pass Baita Segala and reach Passo Guil.

From here, the road curves to the right and continues towards Passo Rocchetta, soon becoming a path (or alternatively, we can turn left and follow route 733a. Variante Leano ). Some passages here are rather exposed, but always on a rather wide and comfortable track. The last few metres of ascent, which take us to the beginning of Passo Rocchetta, are steep and rather technical. Once past the barrier, we find two routes that descend towards Malga Palaer. As indicated by the signs, we take the one on the left, the other one being reserved for pedestrians. This section is the most technical part of the route. When we reach the forest road, we keep to the right and, following this, we reach Malga Palaer. The signs for this route lead us to continue our descent along the forest road, reaching Bocca Larici. Here we find ourselves in the vicinity of one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Lake Garda: Punta Larici.

From the beginning, the route follows the forest road again downhill to the village of Pregasina. We cross the village and then continue downhill on the main road. On this stretch of downhill tarmac road, several of the bends are blind, the roadway is rather narrow and it is not uncommon to encounter a few cars in addition to pedestrians and bicycles. Shortly after passing the viewpoint with the large Regina Mundi statue, near the entrance to the tunnel for Valle di Ledro, we turn right and take the old road, now closed to traffic. This takes us directly back to the fork encountered at the beginning of our ascent at the Ponale zete. Retracing our route along the spectacular Ponale path, we return to Riva, our starting point.

Riding your bike requires specific clothing and equipment, even for relatively short and easy trips. It is always better to be prepared… e.g. for bad weather or a sudden drop in your energy levels. The unexpected things are part of the fun!

Remember to thoroughly evaluate the type of route you plan on doing, the locations you intend to cross and the current season. Has it been raining? Attention: The paths may be slippery and require more caution.

What do I need to bring on my bike tour?

  • An adequate water supply according to your needs (considering temperature, possibility of refuelling and duration of the route)

A classic tour of Garda Trentino: a satisfying ascent for the fit and well within the capacity of the battery of current e-bikes; treacherous, “old style” descent

Signage: 732. Rifugio Pernici Trail-Tour

Route 732. is an old style all mountain trail. The elevation gain is close to 1700 metres, with some of the climbs pretty tough, and long stretches on road. Along the almost 40 km of the trail, the scenery changes often and is definitely breathtaking but it is not a tour for everyone.

The mountain huts Nino Pernici and Malga Grassi are classic destinations for anyone familiar with Garda Trentino. The proposed descent is truly wild , either you love it or you hate it. The terrain is rocky, very rough and quite steep; for anyone who is not at their ease in this kind of terrain it could turn out to be a nightmare. From Campi onward, the track surface is much more stable and easy. The final part, on cement, has a gradient of more than 20% with a view over Riva and the upper lake that is simply impossible to describe. On this final stretch, you have to check your speed and make sure to use both brakes as needed, especially if wet and in the autumn.

At the Rifugio Pernici you should not miss the occasion to taste the famous potatoes polenta or the strangolapreti (spinach gnocchi)...

Safety Tips

  • Always wear your helmet.
  • Plan your ride.
  • You share the trail with other users. Yield right of way to hikers.
  • Let your speed be determined by your experience.

This information is subject to inevitable variations, so none of these indications are absolute. It is not entirely possible to avoid giving inexact or imprecise information, given how quickly environmental and weather conditions can change. For this reason, we decline any responsibility for changes which the user may encounter. In any case, it is advisable to check environment and weather conditions before setting out.

Before you reach the first tunnel on the Gardesana, keep to the right and take a steep cobbled ramp which leads to the start of the famous Ponale Trail . This stretch of the route, on a dirt road, has an incomparable panorama.

Without any alternative trail suitable for a bike we come to the end of the dirt road at the Ponale Alto Belvedere snack bar .

Following the road and subsequent road signs, cycle along the left side of the lake until you come to Pieve at the far end. Here you cross the main road and head towards the centre of the village. Signposting in the narrow streets leads you to the left where you take a short stretch of cycle path. This takes you to the start of the peaceful Val di Concei . Keep on straight along the main road, heading up the valley. Cycle through Locca, Enguiso and, when you get near Lenzumo, take the road on the right leading to Bocca di Trat and Rifugio Nino Pernici.

On this stretch, the signposting is very clear, and in any case, one thing is certain; it’s all uphill, and plenty of it. After a long stretch on the road, as you near your destination, the road turns into a dirt track. When you come to the pass, you will find the mountain hut Rifugio Nino Pernici on your right, a historic destination for local mountain bike enthusiasts.

As an alternative to shorten the tour, instead of continuing to Rifugio Pernici, we can take the 732a. Variante Dos de Preghent Trail along the asphalt road from Lenzumo to Malga Trat and return to Locca along this route. If we choose this option, the ride from Locca back to Riva follows the same route we took in the first part of tour, only in the opposite direction.

From Bocca di Trat , the direction for the descent is clear, so head down the other side, in what, in certain stretches, feels like a steep stream of rocks. Once you get to the meadows of Malga Pranzo, turn right towards the nearby mountain hut Capanna Grassi , another popular destination with local bikers.

With or without a break, it’s now time to cross the torrent and prepare for the descent, which has in store a wonderful surprise: the first trail designed from scratch and entirely built by the Garda Rangers to create a tailor-made experience for bikers . The trail is suitable for all experience levels thanks to a regular surface and a width of 1,20 m, but there are lots of curves to ensure a fun experience as well! Near Parisi, the trail meets the concrete road.

Once you have done the final stretch on cement, you pass in front of the church of San Rocco, continuing on to the start of the Pinza trail. From here on, you are on a dirt track once more, but it is stable and fairly easy. Mind your speed though because even though the trail is quite wide some stretches are very exposed. Take your time and enjoy the panorama on the last stretch which is almost entirely on cement. Your brakes will be red hot. At the end of the descent, you are practically at the entrance to the centre of Riva del Garda , your point of departure.

Radtour über den Tremalzo

Zuletzt aktualisiert am 16. april 2024.

  • Gesamtlänge: 61,6 Kilometer
  • zu überwindende Höhenmeter: 2.250
  • höchster Punkt: 1.702m
  • Fahrzeit: knapp 7 Stunden
  • Schwierigkeitsgrad: schwer

Registrieren!
