The Tata Safari is the flagship model for the Indian car maker that was first introduced in the country in 2021. At that time, the focus was as much on drawing inspiration from an iconic name as was on putting a brand-new model on a pedestal. This eventually resulted in the introduction of a three-row vehicle that promised SUV-like style but claimed MPV-like comfort. Fast forward just two years and the updated Tata Safari has a new wardrobe to show off in 2023.

And then there is the pivotal factor of in-car features - the more, the better, even if you end up not using a significant chunk of these in the long run. The Koreans started the trend and rivals like Tata Motors are only too keen to hit back. The Tata Safari, therefore, was always going to be pampered and peppered with features galore. So how do all of these factors come together to manifest in the flagship product from Tata Motors? Here is the first-drive review of the 2023 Tata Safari facelift:

2023 tata safari facelift: exterior.

expand

The updated Safari looks a tad bit more sporty compared to the outgoing model, while still retaining its largely sophisticated exterior design language. The face, for instance, has been reworked and now sports a new grille, a reworked vertical housing for the fog lamps and headlights, and a stretched DRL bar that connects the sequential DRLs on either side. In a nutshell, the comprehensive updates of the front fascia have given the SUV a butch yet premium look, making it significantly distinctive from the previous model which it has replaced.

Several styling elements on the new Safari are similar to the style updates on the updated Harrier, like the grille, housing for the fog lights and head lights, and stretched DRL bar.

There is not much change in the side profile of the new Tata Safari SUV, apart from the reworked alloy design on the 19-inch wheels. The design is likely to evoke different reactions from different viewpoints instead of inviting unilateral awe. But what works really well is how Tata Motors' designers have managed to snub the use of chrome elements and still come up with a visually striking profile. Overall, the side profile of the SUV looks slightly curvy and pretty clean. The subtly flared wheel arches give the SUV a bold and muscular look, while the new design alloy wheels enhance the premium sporty feel.

There are no chrome elements on the rear of the Safari either, where a stretched LED bar connects the two tail lights and runs all across the length of the trunk door which, by the way, offers powered powered-open option. Besides that, the tailgate looks pretty sculpted thanks to the glossy black panel running through the centre of the trunk that also houses the sleek LED bar. The integrated roof spoiler and chunky black bumper with a thick metal skid plate are other design elements that come enhancing the SUV's bold visual appearance.

The use of chrome on the new Tata Safari has been kept to an absolute bare minimum.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Interior

The new Tata Safari's cabin has become much more premium now and a slew of updates to the feature list as well as to the upholstery lend the vehicle a premium appeal that would have otherwise been restricted to models in segments above the one this car competes in. The top-end Accomplished variant - or persona, as Tata Motors refers to it, comes with a dual-tone colour scheme inside the cabin but the White theme on the seats would be quite hard to maintain in pristine condition.

A look at the dashboard layout inside the new Tata Safari. While it sure does look more premium than ever before, it could be a nightmare to maintain the light-coloured upholstery.

The layered dashboard now gets an artificial wood panel which is a nice touch while the central section is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit that is intuitive, puts out clear feed from the 360-degree cameras and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The map feed can also be redirected to the all-digital driver display screen for better navigation which now sports customisable layouts.

The steering wheel has also been updated and is now a four-spoke set with mounted controls and has an illuminated Tata logo on it. This is certainly another nice touch from Tata Motors enhancing the premium quotient inside the cabin of the new Safari SUV. The updated steering wheel is quite easy to operate and control the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) functionalities that this car offers, courtesy of the layout of the control buttons on the wheel. On that note, the new Tata Safari SUV offers 11 ADAS functions in a further bid to aid driving safety and convenience.

There are plenty of other convenience features that the new Safari packs as well, whether it is the dual-zone climate control function, air purification system, ventilated seats at the front and middle, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, Alexa to Home technology or remote access to the vehicle.

Space remains the same inside the cabin of the new Tata Safari, which means that the SUV continues to be a decently spacious vehicle for passengers in all three rows. Space in that third row, however, continues to come at the cost of a compromised boot storage space. But that's really expected, right?

The two seats in the middle remain the best place to be at inside the updated Tata Safari, complete with window shades and dedicated AC vents.

Overall, the new Tata Safari SUV come as a very well-appointed vehicle with quite a lot of space for comfortable long trips but now, at least in the top-spec version, is significantly more premium than before.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Safety

Tata Motors has been taking the front row across different segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market over the last few years when it comes to making safe cars. While the modern Tata cars come with a wide range of safety features, they also come with robust build quality as well. The Tata Safari facelift too comes following the same strategy.

The Tata Safari comes well-equipped with a host of safety features designed to provide peace of mind to the occupants. Some of the advanced safety technologies available onboard the Tata Safari facelift include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, rain-sensing wipers, rollover mitigation, hill hold control, 360-degree view HD camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front collision prevention function, blind spot detection etc. Moreover, it also gets features like ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat anchors etc.

Here are some of the key safety features onboard the Tata Safari.

2023 tata safari facelift: performance.

Here is where the updated Tata Safari SUV could have been improved so much more. But isn't. So much has already been mentioned - and experienced - about the 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor under the hood and the choice between an automatic gearbox and a six-speed manual stick. Yes, the turbocharged diesel motor could have been refined further. Yes, the grunt is still uncomfortably palpable when pushing the vehicle to its limits. But yes, the new Tata Safari - especially with the automatic transmission - is still quite a fun car to drive and has enough power to get a move on when required. The suspension continues to hold its own on rough roads and the steering still has a nice heft to aid matters.

There is no AWD option on the Tata Safari still even if the vehicle is relatively comfortable on less than perfect roads.

But why this otherwise very capable model does not also come with a petrol engine under its hood is beyond the comprehension of many. Tata Motors is almost snubbing the petrol-buying audience in the country, a group that is steadily increasing. There is also no 4x4 option for the updated version of the SUV because the platform on which the new Tata Safari is based on does not allow for it. But here is also a miss, especially as this model does go up against authentic off-road options in the market as well.

2023 Tata Safari facelift: Verdict

The updated Tata Safari remains a very strong offering in the three-row SUV segment under <span class='webrupee'>₹</span>30 lakh.

The updated Tata Safari is a big step up in terms of its exterior design and cabin features and quality when compared to the previous model. Space has always been this car's strength but the additions to the feature list arm this SUV to the absolute teeth.

The diesel motor and the automatic transmission work extremely well in tandem but as mentioned previously, Tata Motors ought to strongly consider a petrol option for the model as well, especially considering the number of buyers favouring the petrol engines are increasing across India over the last few years

Engine and Performance

Left Front Three Quarter

The 2023 avatar of the Tata Safari retains the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic unit. This motor meets BS6 Phase 2 emissions standards and produces 168bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. The automatic transmission still works very well, with the shifts that remain quick, smooth, and in sync with the engine’s characteristics and power delivery. There is enough torque for pulling from low speeds, and the transmission's responsiveness to both upshifts and downshifts makes the driving experience enjoyable. It also gets paddle shifters, and they respond well, making the driving experience more engaging.

Engine Shot

The Eco, City, and Sport driving modes remain unchanged, offering responsive throttle inputs. The Safari has sufficient load-carrying and people-hauling capabilities in both urban and highway settings, and it can overtake effortlessly despite its size and weight. This Tata SUV remains planted and stable at triple-digit speeds, and its performance is not compromised despite being larger and heavier than the Harrier. The terrain mode selector, which efficiently alters the response through software maps, has been retained too. However, some off-road enthusiasts may argue that all-wheel drive (AWD) would have made the SUV more capable in hilly regions and slippery conditions. Nonetheless, our experience suggests that the Safari can tackle trails and rough terrain with poise for the most part.

Drive Mode Buttons/Terrain Selector

Ride and Handling

Right Side View

The Safari's high ground clearance, tall stance, and well-tuned suspension allow it to effortlessly absorb bumps, potholes, and ruts on broken roads. Occupants are not unsettled, and there is minimal noise inside the cabin — whether driving at low or high speeds. Its robust build quality and Land Rover underpinnings are evident in its ride and handling.

Left Front Three Quarter

Previous Safari owners complained about the heavy hydraulic steering, but the new electronic power steering has addressed this issue. It feels lighter at low speeds but adds weight as the speed increases, as is also noticeable in the Sport mode. The ADAS, meanwhile, is not intrusive and gently guides the car back into the marked lane if it starts to veer off. Then, all the disc brakes provide good stopping power and work well with the emergency automatic braking system. Overall, both systems functioned flawlessly, with the adaptive cruise control responding to commands instantly.

Left Rear Three Quarter

Exterior Design

Right Front Three Quarter

Despite being a facelift, the new model has been significantly redesigned, giving it a concept-like appearance and a more upmarket feel than its predecessor. The new single grille is unique, with accents that match the exterior body colour on this version. The connected LED bar is a welcome addition, and the new squared-off headlamp housings on the re-sculpted bumper further distinguish it from the previous model.

Right Rear Three Quarter

Moreover, the new 19-inch wheels have an attractive design similar to the Sierra concept's wheels showcased at this year's Auto Expo. The rear section has been updated with tweaked taillights and a new LED bar that gets the welcome and goodbye animation in line with the front. There's also a faux skid plate on the redesigned bumper with vertically stacked reflectors and reverse light housing.

Side Badge

Interior and Features

Dashboard

The interior has also been updated, but the overall design remains largely unchanged. The most noticeable change is the new steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, which was first seen on the new Nexon. Tata has also addressed our previous criticism of this new steering’s horn placement, which was awkward and difficult to use. The horn has now been repositioned and is more responsive to inputs.

Front Row Seats

The new Safari also features touch controls for the AC. Other major updates to the dashboard include a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a fully digital instrument cluster. The latter gets readable fonts, fast response time, and high customisability, and is packed with information, including ADAS. The touchscreen is also highly responsive and has a clean UI, but it lacks haptic feedback and knobs for quick control.

Front Row Seats

The seating layout remains unchanged, with ample space in all rows. However, a major improvement that elevates its interior's premium feel is the high-quality materials used for the upholstery, dashboard, and most surfaces. Nothing feels cheap or out of place, and the cabin remains robust. The Safari has been known for its 'boss mode', and it continues to offer a laid-back seating position with power adjustments. The seats also get adjustable headrests for enhanced comfort. To further delight passengers, ventilated seats are now available in both rows, which will be a blessing in our hot and humid climate.

Second Row Seats

The carmaker has also taken the safety aspect up a notch. For example, all variants/personas now come standard with six airbags, while the top-spec version gets an additional driver's knee airbag. In addition, the Safari gets a 360-degree camera and a host of ADAS features, including new ones like adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, high beam assist, lane change alert, and lane departure warning. Other ADAS features include door open alert, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Additionally, other important safety features include rear collision warning, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking, which worked effectively. The SUV also gets disc brakes on all four wheels.

Third Row Seats

The new Safari is also equipped with a new e-call feature for emergency assistance. With a touch of a button, the breakdown call can notify the roadside assistance service. Other impressive tech features that worked flawlessly include the new TFT cluster, terrain mode selector with TFT screen, audio controls compatible with Alexa, powered tailgate opening, and the connected car experience. Finally, whether you choose the six- or seven-seater version, every variant, from the entry-level Smart to the top-spec Accomplished+, offers a good variety of exterior colour options and material choices.

Instrument Cluster

Tata Motors wants to broaden the appeal of the new Safari with a wider range of exterior colours, including a segment-first dual-tone option, and a plethora of new features. The Safari retains its macho appearance, making it a symbol of authority while offering a premium and spacious cabin. Prospective buyers also get new technology and added connectivity, all while cocooned in safety. Tata Motors also has kept the premium reasonable, making the new Safari an easy choice for buyers, given its many appealing features.

which car is better between punch and exter

The Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter both have their own strengths and weaknesses. The Tata Punch offers a good riding experience, attractive design, and good build quality, but it is criticized for being overpriced and lacking certain features. On the other hand, the Hyundai Exter provides a rugged appeal, loaded with features, and competitive pricing, but it has limited engine options and interior space. Ultimately, the choice between the two would depend on your specific priorities and preferences.

In terms of equipment, the Safari Dark Edition comes well kitted, considering it is based on the higher XT+ and XZ+ trims of the standard SUV. Hence, its top-spec trim gets features like an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity support, ventilated first and second row seats (also offered on the Safari Gold Edition), a wireless charger, JBL audio system, Tata iRA connected car tech, 7.0-inch part-digital instrument cluster, an air purifier, panoramic sunroof and leatherette seat upholstery.

2022 Tata Safari Dark Edition: engine and gearbox

Powering the new Safari Dark edition is the same 170hp, 350Nm, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The Dark Edition trim is also available with the option of both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox, just like the regular Safari.

2022 Tata Safari Dark Edition: competition check

The new Tata Safari Dark Edition continues to compete with the other three-row midsize SUV offerings in our market like the new Mahindra XUV700 , MG Hector Plus  and  Hyundai Alcazar .

The reworked exteriors marked the new design language for the SUV inspired by Tata’s other SUV, Harrier. The new Safari is loaded with all modern safety and convenience features along with a premium finish for the interiors.

Expert Review on Tata Safari Storme

The Tata Safari Storme has maintained its status as one of the country's most sought-after automobiles for many years. Even the busiest city streets won't be too much for this strong and sturdy SUV; it can handle any terrain, and the ride is comfortable enough for long distances. But what is it about the Safari Storme that makes it so unique? In this article, we will discuss the characteristics of the Safari Storme that set it apart from the competition. There's a lot to like about this automobile, from the fact that it has a robust engine to the fact that its cabin is roomy. If you are thinking about purchasing an SUV, then you should look at the Tata Safari Storme as an option.

How is the Design?

When it comes to Indian sports utility vehicles (SUVs), the Tata Safari Storme represents something of a deviation from the norm. It is not boxy or awkward in any way, and instead has an overall pleasing appearance. The front end is especially beautifully done, with projector headlamps that come with LED daytime running lights and a chrome grille that contains the Tata emblem. Additionally, the daytime running lights can be turned on and off independently. The sides are not particularly complicated, but there are some attractive features, such as roof rails and alloy wheels that are 17 inches in diameter. A roof-mounted spoiler and LED tail lamps may be found in the rear of the vehicle. Overall, it's a really nicely constructed SUV that should be able to hold up well as it gets older.

The design of the Tata Safari Storme is based on that of the Land Rover Freelander. The vehicle was designed by a team of engineers from Tata Motors, JLR and Magna Steyr. The design process involved extensive use of computer-aided design and modelling. The aim was to create a vehicle that would be both practical and stylish. The front chrome polished dual-slat grille meets with the massive drawn-back headlight units, creating an appearance that is either enormous or more substantial when viewed from the side profile. A substantial band made of chrome is positioned right over the front grille, and it bears the word "STORME" embossed in black. The top of the vehicle, known as the bonnet, is level, giving the impression that the SUV is from an earlier era. The fog lights and small air intakes are all part of the same fog lamps assembly that is located on the lower side of the bumper. To tell you the truth, the front windscreen and the plain window frame on the flanks are significant deal breakers. The profile seen from the side is unimpressive; it seems overly cluttered and features a number of wrinkles. The wheel arches are widened, and a side stepper has been installed, both of which are done for the convenience of the passengers.

In addition to this, the placement of the tyres is not correct, and there is a significant space between the wheel arches and the wheels themselves. Tata was unable to improve the appearance of the vehicle's rear end, and it now has a dated appearance. It has a rounded spoiler at the top, a flat boot lid, a pair of unimpressive tail lights, reflectors, and dual chrome finished tail pipes. Despite the many redesigns, Tata was unable to do justice to the rear styling.

How does it perform?

Under the hood of the Safari Storme is a 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTT VARICOR diesel engine that is capable of 148 horsepower at 4000 revolutions per minute and 320 Nm of torque between 1,700 and 2,700 revolutions per minute. A manual gearbox with five speeds is used to handle the transmission responsibilities of the vehicle. The top-of-the-line model features a four-wheel drive electronic shift on fly mechanism in addition to a restricted slip differential. This option is available. A more potent version of the 2.2-liter diesel engine, branded the VARICOR 400, and producing 154 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, is offered on the top-of-the-line trim level of the vehicle. The more powerful engine comes in both 2x2 and 4x4 configurations, and it is paired with a brand new manual gearbox that has six speeds.

How’s the Mileage?

The fuel efficiency of the two-wheel drive version is somewhat improved, coming in about 14 kilometers per litre. Although the gasoline engine has a power output that is 9 horsepower more, the diesel engine appears to be more nimble while moving. The Storme can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in just 15 seconds, despite the fact that it is a hefty vehicle (approximate value).

How’s the Driving Experience?

The Safari Storme is an extremely enjoyable vehicle to pilot. It has a good amount of power and the comfort level is really high. The one and only drawback is that it's a little bit on the expensive side. Nevertheless, if you are searching for a fantastic time behind the wheel, the Safari Storme is an option that you should seriously consider.

How’s its Off-road Capability?

The Tata Safari Storme is an SUV that is made to be sturdy and rough, and it is designed to handle any kind of terrain. Off-road driving might present a variety of obstacles, but thanks to its robust engine, you'll be able to overcome any obstacle you come across. In addition to this, the suspension system was developed to be able to cope with bumpy and uneven terrain. You may feel confident that the Safari Storme will be able to see you safely through whatever journey that you choose to do with it.

What’s the Interior like?

Fortunately for the Storme, the interior is far more tastefully designed than the exterior. The cabin has taken on a more upscale appearance by adopting a darker colour scheme and adding touches of silver throughout. A dynamic four-spoke steering wheel similar to the one seen in the Tata Zest is one of the features that make the cabin stand out. Aside from that, the dashboard has a chic and contemporary design, but the quality of the materials used to construct it is not up to par. A music system, air conditioning vents, and temperature knobs are all included in the center console's silver finish. The floor console has convenient cubby holes built into it for storage purposes. The instrument cluster that sits behind the steering wheel is both spacious and easily readable. There is enough of space for passengers both in the front and in the back, including excellent leg room. There is space in the back of the vehicle for two additional people thanks to the placement of two jump seats. Because of the big glass surface, there a great view, particularly for the driver. When compared to the earlier model, the Storm's cabin now features some updated amenities. The VX top-of-the-line model has a dashboard, center console, and door panels that have a dual-tone finish that is predominantly beige and wooden. The LX and EX models have a dual-tone finish that is predominantly black and silver. Fabric in shades of beige (VX) and gray are used for the seats (LX, EX). Additionally, the steering wheel and gear knob each follow the same pattern of dual combination for their respective trims.

The analogue dials on the instrument cluster are larger than those found on earlier models, and the illumination is bright white. The cluster on the clock that is simple to read is covered in black rims. In addition, the instrument console features a cigarette lighter, AC switches, and a Drive Selector Knob (VX) that allows the user to choose between 4H, 4L, and 2L drive settings. It features air conditioning vents for the occupants in the second row as well as a charging port for mobile devices. When it comes to the amount of space available inside the cabin, the Storme provides a generous amount of both legroom and headroom for all passengers. With roof-mounted air conditioning vents, the dual-tone interior makes the cabin seem more open, larger, and clean than it actually is. The front seats of the SUV can be adjusted in three different ways.

Tech and Infotainment

In this day and age, it is difficult to conceive of existence without the assistance of various forms of technology. Our lives are continuously made simpler and more fun by the abundance of gizmos and gadgets that are constantly surrounding us. The Tata Safari Storme is no different, and it is equipped with a range of different technological and informational capabilities that will keep you engaged and connected even when you are on the road.

The Safari Storme provides you with an automatic temperature control system as well as an adjustable steering column to ensure that you remain comfortable even on the longest of journeys. In addition, there is a built-in four-speaker sound system that provides audio clarity for those individuals who enjoy taking their music with them wherever they go. Therefore, whether you are searching for a vehicle that can keep up with your hectic lifestyle or one that will help you relax while you are on a lengthy road trip, the Tata Safari Storme will not fail to please you. This automobile has everything you need to make every journey an experience to remember, from its sleek and contemporary style to its robust engine and cutting-edge technological features.

Safety Equipment

When it comes to protecting you and your loved ones, the Tata Safari Storme is a family car that comes standard with all of the most cutting-edge safety technology available today. These include child-proof rear door locks, dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, engine immobiliser, and more.

Which variant to buy?

There are four different versions of the Tata Safari Storme: the LX, the EX, the VX, and the VX 4x4. The LX model is the entry-level model, and it has a price of 10.19 lakh Indian Rupees (ex-showroom Delhi). Steel wheels measuring 16 inches in diameter are included, as are manually adjusted outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs), fabric upholstery, dual front airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD).

The EX model has a starting price of Rs. 11.69 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and comes standard with features such as alloy wheels measuring 17 inches in diameter, outside rear view mirrors that can be electrically adjusted, leather upholstery, an eight-way adjustable driver's seat, and steering mounted controls.

The value offering is the VX. It comes equipped with amenities such as alloy wheels that are 18 inches in diameter, projector headlights, fog lamps, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic headlamps, cruise control, and a Harman audio system with touchscreen interface and subwoofer, rear camera with park assist sensors, eight-way power adjustable driver's seat with memory function..

The most expensive model is the VX 4x4, which has the capacity to operate all four wheels simultaneously and is the pick of the lot if you are an off-roading enthusiast.

Which Cars Compete in this Segment?

The Safari Storme has competition from a variety of different vehicles that are similarly positioned within the Indian automobile industry. It is a rival to the Mahindra Scorpio and also the Hyundai Creta in terms of prices. Some would also put the Renault Duster here. However, to be honest, the Mahindra XUV500 and Scorpio are both rivals at various levels of the brand. The Mahindra Scorpio is clearly a more popular option, with its rugged and muscular design, great features, and reliability. However, it does not have as powerful an engine and may be costlier.

One of the other vehicles that compete with the Safari Storme is the Renault Duster. It is an SUV that is more affordable than the Safari Storme and comes with a 5-seater configuration. The Hyundai Creta is a larger 5-seater proposition in this regard. Both these SUVs are no match for the brawn of the 7-seater Tata Safari and lack off-roading abilities. However, they are better equipped with contemporary features in some respects. Their engines are also not as powerful as the Safari.

Verdict (Value for Money?)

The Tata Safari, one of the first locally produced and most popular SUVs in India, has been on the market for several years now. In that time, it has seen a number of improvements and updates, notably to its engine and power output. The Tata Safari Storme is based on the X2 Platform of its sibling ARIA and features a more robust Hydro formed Chassis sections, a new 2.2-liter,16-valve DOHC Common Rail Direct injection diesel Engine named VARICOR with Variable Turbine Technology, and a new G76 Mark II Gearbox. Although the Storme is already the most reasonably priced SUV on the market at this size and with this heft, it may benefit from a few upgrades in terms of interior plastic quality, features that are available from other brands, and general refinement. It looks and feels dated, although it offers a powerful engine and suitable ruggedness with that take-me-anywhere feel.

Tata Safari Storme Price List (Variant Wise)

Tata Safari Storme Ex-Showroom price ranges from ₹ 11.08 to 16.17 Lakh. Tata offers Safari Storme in 4 variants. The top variant of Safari Storme is VX Refreshed 4x4 (400 NM) and the base variant is Lx Refreshed.

Moving beyond price: A new roadmap for CPG growth

  • 5 minute read
  • September 25, 2024

K.B. Clausen

Operations Transformation, Principal, PwC US

In the rapidly evolving consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry, companies are navigating a complex landscape marked by heightened price sensitivity and shifting consumer expectations. To help sustain growth and remain competitive, CPG leaders should move beyond traditional pricing strategies and embrace a multifaceted approach.

Since 2020, CPGs have driven impressive growth, partially through well-managed pricing strategies to respond to massive inflation in materials and increased labor costs. We’ve seen US shelf prices for consumer goods surge by about 30%, leading to revenue gains despite slight dips in volume. During the same period, CPG-delivered costs rose by about 25% — driven primarily by mid-2022’s peak inflation, led by increases in ingredients and packaging costs, but with rising energy and labor costs also contributing significantly (see chart below). Wages in CPG, for example, have risen by about 30% since 2019.

By 2023, the landscape shifted. Consumers became more price-sensitive, deteriorating brand loyalty and allowing private labels to regain market share. This year, brands face a tougher pricing environment, with many holding prices steady or experimenting with reductions as total CPG costs stabilize at roughly 20% above pre-pandemic levels.

Heightened price sensitivity has made it harder for many brands to justify further pricing actions. Currently, consumer shelf price increases are slightly higher than the increase in modeled costs. Private labels, after adjusting prices in 2022 and early 2023, have stabilized and gained market share as consumers increasingly turn to lower-cost alternatives. Categories such as general food, frozen food and paper products have seen some of the largest price increases since January 2020.

The gap between price increases and cost growth indicates that relying on pricing alone for growth may no longer be sustainable. With stagnant incomes and declining savings, consumers are less able to absorb further price hikes. This dynamic creates risks for CPGs, especially in case of potential future commodity cost increases which could be sparked by geopolitics, including the risk of new import tariffs after the US election.

Strategic levers for the future

In today’s pricing landscape, executives should consider the implications of K-curve demand. This phenomenon can put pressure on brands across categories, demanding targeted strategies. Premium brands may still grow among affluent consumers, but mass-market products will likely face shrinking demand. Sectors like travel and entertainment, which cater to higher-income households, maintain better pricing power, while housing-related industries (like home improvement, furniture and appliances) struggle. Discretionary and services sectors are expected to show stronger revenue growth this holiday season compared to staples and goods.

The path forward involves a blend of:

Increasing growth from innovation

Numerous CPGs aim to significantly increase growth through innovation, with many boosting investments by more than 50% and shortening time to market by about 30%. Raising budgets, however, may not be enough. Companies should look to reshape their pipeline to address affordability challenges, offering clear value propositions that compete with private labels — while continuing to differentiate premium brands for higher-income consumers.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing a key role in accelerating innovation, with CPGs using it for demand sensing, formulation creation, simulated testing and compliance automation. These AI-driven innovations, combined with traditional process enhancements (e.g., in commercialization and supply chain planning) are improving innovation productivity. Additionally, contract R&D and manufacturing are helping companies speed up testing and scaling.

Your next move

  • Redistribute resources. Increase resources allocated to innovation and reshape the pipeline toward value and affordability, enabled by AI and process enhancements.

Aiming digital investments at productivity

For many CPGs, achieving a strong ROI on digital investments has been difficult. Still, the maturation of AI and advanced robotics is transforming the ROI equation for digital investments that directly target labor and materials productivity — both in the office and in the factory.

Some companies are pushing the envelope on office productivity with an AI automation program that targets $100 million+ in benefits. Agile teams with technical skills and deep functional expertise deliver tailored solutions every two months, focusing on:

  • Marketing:  Campaign planning, content creation and distribution
  • Operations:  Demand and supply planning, order management, customer logistics and procurement
  • HR:  Labor planning and recruiting
  • Finance:  Forecasting and reporting

Approved solutions are expected to deliver at least 30% productivity gains (many exceed 50%), with payback in under two years.

In the supply chain,  investments in advanced manufacturing  controls, digital simulation models (i.e., digital twins) and robotics are helping to drive major improvements. For instance, digitizing a food plant increased throughput by 40%, while improving controls on a personal care line helped cut downtime by 90% and utility consumption by 30%. Robotic automation, including co-bots and automated guided vehicles, is reducing labor costs by 30%-50%, making these investments even more critical as labor availability tightens.

Adapting marketing strategies for agility

Marketing strategies should also evolve in this tough environment by becoming more attuned to shifting consumer expectations. Data-driven insights are central here, as they allow CPG companies to engage consumers with more personalized, relevant messaging. As inflation squeezes wallets, tailored promotions and loyalty programs become central for  preserving brand loyalty .

As consumers become more price-conscious, they’re also demanding greater value and tailored experiences. Companies that go beyond surface-level  personalization  and leverage advanced data insights to anticipate needs and deliver targeted, meaningful interactions will be better positioned to build engagement and consumer trust.

  • Automate productivity.  Aim digital and automation investments at step changes in labor and materials productivity, both within the office and in the supply chain.
  • Utilize data.  Use data-driven insights to sharpen marketing, deliver personalized messaging and preserve loyalty in a price-sensitive market.

Rethink value streams

Many CPGs long ago addressed traditional product cost levers, like procurement and lean continuous improvement. The next chapter requires a cross-functional approach concentrating on transformational levers . Holistic value stream projects evaluate all product costs competitively for each brand-market value chain, aligning cost decisions with consumer value. This approach — which is supported by commercial, operations, R&D and finance teams — unearths strategic opportunities such as assortment optimization, product and packaging redesign, manufacturing technology upgrades, make versus buy and material innovation. These efforts target 300 to 500 basis points of margin enhancement.

Improve product availability

Despite the end of pandemic-era supply chain challenges, retail out-of-stock rates for fast-moving consumer goods remain in the 5%-10% range, causing lost sales and reduced brand loyalty. For some CPGs, overcoming this challenge is now seen as one of the critical drivers of future growth. Making progress starts with understanding the root causes of out of stock, which are often a combination of planning, reliability, inventory management, ordering and fulfillment practices. Addressing these challenges requires closer collaboration between CPG and retailers, including sharing of planning, sales and inventory data, and coordination of supply chain execution. Effective efforts can reduce out-of-stock rates below 1%, driving a 2%-4% sales lift.

Supply chain service levels must be balanced against cost and working capital requirements. Therefore, product availability initiatives are often paired with total customer profitability initiatives, enhancing visibility into customer and SKU-level profitability and aiding better investment choices.

  • Rethink value streams.  Review core value streams from a customer-driven perspective to eliminate costs consumers don’t value.
  • Strengthen retail relationships.  Collaborate closely with retailers to improve product availability and total customer profitability.

Portfolio management and M&A

CPG companies are currently priced to deliver 4%-5% growth, significantly higher than the more recent guidance of 1%-2% for this fiscal year. This creates a meaningful value gap, with about 20% of the market cap at risk if growth isn’t accelerated or shifted toward higher-margin opportunities.

To close this gap, pursuing inorganic growth through M&A is crucial. Companies that engage in M&A during economic downturns often outperform their peers. Strategic acquisitions can help close operational gaps, unlock new growth levers, boost profitability and position companies to meet market expectations while reducing competitive pressures.

Acquiring innovative technologies like AI-powered demand forecasting or supply chain automation can immediately enhance productivity and profitability. Strategic acquisitions in high-growth categories, such as better-for-you foods or wellness products, meet consumer demand and expand market share. Additionally, acquiring companies with complementary operations enables cost synergies, such as shared logistics or enhanced manufacturing, exemplified by large food and beverage companies acquiring smaller, niche brands. CPGs shouldn’t rule out mega deals either. Though sometimes challenging to execute, they can redefine the competitive landscape to an acquirer’s advantage.

  • Refine your portfolio. Balance portfolio management through a combination of divestitures of non-core businesses and strategic M&A in on-trend, high-growth categories and brands.

Preparing for growth in a shifting market

To succeed in today’s challenging pricing landscape, CPG leaders should shift their focus beyond pricing and embrace a mix of longer-term strategies . Prioritizing innovation, digital transformation, value stream optimization and strategic M&A can help businesses meet consumer needs and continue driving sustainable growth.
