14 Day Chicago to Denver Road Trip Adventure with a side of Colorado Springs

Follow along a fourteen day road trip from Chicago to Denver with stops at the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi, America's mountain, one-lane two-way roads, and more.

The drive from Chicago to Denver is approximately fifteen hours. Technically, it could be done in one day, but unless you’re on a tight schedule, why would you do that to yourself? 

For one thing, it’s not a good idea to spend that long driving. For another, I-80 is not the most scenic route.

Despite that, after I was invited to speak and exhibit at the Denver Travel and Adventure Show, Mr. TLT and I decided to drive. Being seasoned road trippers, we made an adventure out of it.

Our fourteen-day Chicago to Denver road trip (technically Lake in the Hills) was a round-about route that included a river town, the oldest continuously-operating restaurant west of the Mississippi, one-lane two-way roads, America’s mountain, and dives into our ancestry.

We stayed in hotels, motels, and one of the country’s most beautiful resorts. We also took it slow. Well, slow for us.

Chicago to Denver Road Trip

Day 1: Chicago suburbs to Hannibal and Monroe City, Missouri

Jim christened our Chicago to Denver road trip the anti-FAM trip. FAM is short for familiarization, and it’s shorthand for press trips.

Whether I’m hosted by a destination or exploring on my own, I usually try to do as much as I possibly can, going from sunrise to sunset (and often beyond). When I travel, I want to do and see EVERYTHING.

Not this time.

This time, we decided to go a little slower. Take it a little easier. While I love completely immersing myself, if our first day was any indication, I could get used to this more relaxed style.

Case in point: our unstructured visit to Hannibal, Missouri.

If you know Mark Twain, you’ve heard of this storybook town. Following my own advice , our first stop was to the visitor center , and Trish gave us some stellar advice:

See Samuel Clemens’ boyhood home? Check.

Whitewash a fence? Check.

Free ice cream cone at the Amish market? Check.

Native American Trading Company? Check.

That last one surprised us, but Trish told us the owner works directly with Native American tribes and has for years.

The gallery was filled with art, jewelry, clothing, and more from Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, and other peoples. Judy (I think that’s her name) told us the owner travels west frequently to work with the artists.

She and Donna were a hoot. They were fun and warm, and I’m not just saying that because Judy said I have a pretty face (and Jim’s not so bad himself). It’s because meeting people like those two is one of my favorite parts of travel.

We walked to the river and watched a train roll by. Then we made one last stop at Riverside Park.

By 6:30 we’d changed into our pajamas and were eating Casey’s Taco Pizza (if you know, you know) in bed while watching Wheel of Fortune.

It was a very good first day.

Where we stayed: Fairbridge Inn Express in Monroe City, MO

Day 2: Monroe City, Missouri to Emporia, Kansas

Day 2 was another day in my new slower-travel life. We began with leftover taco pizza for breakfast and then headed west on 36 to Kansas City. As soon as I knew we’d be driving through KC, I contacted Sage of Everyday Wanderer to see if she’d be available. She was!

Knowing that KC is the barbecue capital, I asked her for recommendations. In true travel writer form, she offered several options, and not just with names and locations.

Sage provided details, like this one’s the oldest, this one was founded by a classically-trained chef, this one’s the original spot for barbecue in the city. She also indicated which would be closest to our route.

I picked Q39 , the one known for its chef and its brisket. While normally I would have chosen the one that started the whole ‘que craze in KC, it was more out of the way and we had a date with my past.

Jim went with the burnt ends burger and I chose a combo of pulled pork and brisket with white bean cassoulet. Delicious, but even better was spending time with a colleague and friend whom I like and admire.

People are why I love travel, and Sage is one of those people. (You should follow her, if you don’t. Her photos will give you INSANE wanderlust!)

After lunch, we continued to Emporia and the Lyon County History Center. I’d recently discovered during my trip to Fort Wayne that my great-great-great-great-grandfather built the first house in Plymouth, just west of Emporia.

I contacted the history center and William did some research. He didn’t find a lot, and one of the books was the one Elizabeth at the Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne had found, but it was more than I could have found on my own. Plus, they sold that book in their gift shop.

Yes, I bought one.

We then found John and Achsah’s graves in Cottonwood Cemetery. If you’d told me a month ago that I’d find the graves of my ancestors in a tiny cemetery in Kansas, I would have thanked you for the story. 

And yet, there they were. My ancestors.

Across the road was Cottonwood Friends, and I’m assuming it’s the Quaker house my family attended.

Heritage travel is cool.

Both Sage and Roxie of Roxie on the Road had recommended Radius Brewing for dinner. We made it in time for happy hour ($3 pints and discounted small plates). It was only five and we were still sated from our barbecue, so we had a small plate and ordered a dinner to go.

Once again, we were checked in and wearing our pajamas by 6:30. 

Is this how I want to travel every day? No. But for this trip, this foray into my past and towards an intense tradeshow weekend and speaking event, it was perfect.

Day Two. Another good day.

Where we stayed: Comfort Inn & Suites , Emporia, KS

Day 3: Emporia to Goodland, Kansas

Kansas blew us away – almost literally!

The day began with a super exciting visit to Walmart and ALDI for ice and soft drinks. I also needed a brush. I have so much hair I needed to buy a brush! Pretty soon I’m going to need a ponytail holder. I may buy a bottle of bubbly to celebrate that milestone.

We passed my ancestors’ cemetery and continued west. Intense winds buffeted the car. We saw a brown sign: historical marker! Imagine my delight when I realized it was the same one my good friend and I had stopped at in 2010.

At Strong City, the Flint Hills Scenic Byway took us to Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve . We’d hiked there in 2017, but there was no way we were hiking this time. The wind was blow-curly-hair-straight strength.

Instead we explored the visitor center, which is temporarily in the Spring Hill Ranch House, built in 1881 by Stephen and Louisa Jones.

Next: lunch at the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi.

Seth Hays, Daniel Boone’s great-grandson, opened a restaurant and trading post on the Santa Fe Trail in 1857.

Hays House 1857 Restaurant & Tavern has been feeding people in Council Grove ever since. We found his house, as well as a bur oak that first sprouted in 1776.

We left Council Grove and drove through a fierce, but quick, rainstorm on the way to I-70. After that it was smooth sailing with blue skies and another rest area cum tourist attraction.

A random stop for gas took us off the highway and right past a giant sculpture of Buffalo Bill aiming his rifle at a bison.

Finally around 7pm, 6pm Mountain Time, we made it to Goodland. Checked in. Made the obligatory visit to the giant Van Gogh. Revisited Jim’s childhood with carry-out from Taco Johns.

Our accommodations the first two nights were decent. On the fourth night, they’d be extraordinary.

Where we stayed: you don’t want to know.

Day 4: Goodland, Kansas to Colorado Springs, Colorado

I’m not sure where to start, so I’ll start at the beginning.

It was only 7 in the morning when we got back on I-70. We were both excited to get to Colorado Springs and anxious to get out of our hotel.

(Let’s just say we bought a candle to diffuse the smell.)

It worked out, because by 10 we’d reached one of the most luxurious and iconic resorts in the country:

The Broadmoor .

After the madcap rush that is valets and bellhops at a place like that, we were in a shuttle on our way to Seven Falls. We’re suckers for waterfalls.

This one? (Or seven, I should say.) It’s claimed to be a National Geographic International Waterfall. We tried to arrive early because it was supposed to rain in the afternoon. It didn’t.

But during our walk towards the falls from the entrance, which is about eight tenths of a mile, the snow was gorgeous. Certainly better than rain.

We got to the falls and looked at the stairs. 224 of them. Could I do this? Could I climb them? I highly doubted it. I’m ten months post-radiation and still not in the best shape. Where I live, the elevation is 869 feet. Colorado Springs? Nearly 7,000.

I’ll try it, I thought.

The first steps were harrowing. I’ve never been afraid of heights in my life; suddenly I couldn’t look down.

But my fear of dying was less than my fear of not living, so I climbed. And climbed. And climbed.

My cheeks still hurt from grinning. I did it! I climbed to the top of The Broadmoor Seven Falls ! I climbed back down! And I saw something absolutely breathtaking, and (more important to me) did not keep my husband from seeing something absolutely breathtaking.

We got back to the hotel and our room was ready. We relaxed for a bit. I went to the Hotel Bar, got a martini, sat in the shadow of a Maxfield Parrish (which may or may not be real) and watched teenagers in tuxes and gowns pose for pictures.

Then, dinner. A delightful multi-course meal overlooking Cheyenne Lake at Ristorante del Lago . One of the best meals I’ve ever had.

We retired to our room. Lounged in our robes and ate chocolate covered strawberries.

Decadent. Magical.

Our day ended as it began: with anticipation. But also with gratitude and a feeling of accomplishment, certainty, and love.

That’s how each day should end, I believe. Hope for tomorrow and satisfaction with today.

Day 5: Colorado Springs, Colorado

We woke up to snow.

Instead of eliciting the grunts and complaints of home, this display evoked wonder. I flung open the French doors and marveled at the fairy-tale setting of white-topped evergreens and a pink sun rising across the lake.

I couldn’t dally, though. We had a 7:30am tour of The Broadmoor on our agenda.

It was a quick tour. We learned about the resort’s founder, Spencer Penrose, who was by all accounts quite a character. We learned about the grounds, the golf courses, the swans, and Bottle Alley.

With every new fact, I grew more enchanted.

Our tour was short because we had tickets to ride the The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway . Upon arriving, we learned the train would not reach the summit due to weather.

While we could have elected to ride partway, we knew we’d be here the rest of the week, so we pushed our tickets back a day.

We drove to Manitou Cliff Dwellings Museum and learned about the people who were in Colorado way way way before Europeans and way before there was a Colorado.

While the dwellings are original, their location isn’t; they’re originally from the Mesa Verde area.

We explored the museum and the dwellings, and then drove back to The Broadmoor to have lunch and check out.

Lunch was at The Golden Bee, a 19th-century British Pub that was moved lock, stock, and panels from England by way of New York. (There is some question about the specifics. I’ll have to dig into it. Oh, darn!)

Crackers with cheddar spread, French onion soup, cheddar ale soup, and a shared serving of fish and chips filled us up before walking back to the resort for sorbet, raspberry for him and pear champagne for me.

We picked up a jar of the honey we’d had with our fontina the night before, checked out, and said goodbye.

Sigh. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Except… We were headed to our rental house for the next four nights. I’ve never rented a vacation home before so I didn’t quite know what to expect. I hoped the place matched the pictures.

It did! It did!

We got settled in. Jim rested and I walked half a mile to a local brewery and had some of the best beers I’ve tried.

I walked back. We ate cheese and charcuterie while relaxing on the couch with a fire blazing.

This day could have gone sideways when our morning plans changed, but we knew there were other things we could do. Flexibility is key. As long as we were together, we knew we were going to have fun.

Where we stayed Days 5 – 9: Sleek Old Colorado City Home

Day 6: Colorado Springs

We tried to ride the cog railway, but on the way they sent a text message letting us know that they wouldn’t be going to the summit. We elected to reschedule, again.

One, I really wanted to see the summit, and two, there are no bathrooms on the train cars. It’s wise to drink a lot of water at that elevation, so…

Jim noticed we happened to be right by the Manitou Springs Visitor Center when I got the text. We pulled into the parking lot next to a giant green question mark.

Inside, Kayla gave us tips on exploring her town, including recommending Rocky Mountain Beignets. She said that once they opened, she started noticing powdered sugar all over the sidewalks. I thanked her for the heads up because now I knew not to wear black on the day we’d be exploring.

Before we left, she gave us a couple collapsible cups so we could try the famed mineral waters ourselves.

That would be another day. We’d originally planned to drive to Royal Gorge Bridge before the cog rescheduling, so that’s where we went.

Wow. The first sight of that gaping chasm carved by the Arkansas River and the suspension bridge floating 1,000 feet in the air shocks the system. And to think they built that bridge in 1929, with no deaths or injuries.

It’s quite the complex, with a zipline, a giant swing, a playland with a carousel, and a gondola. The ticket taker advised taking the gondola first because it stopped at the highest point.

We watched the short film and walked across the bridge. At eighteen feet wide, it’s not scary in the slightest (at least, it wasn’t for us).

After a quick stop in Cañon City, Colorado for a smoothie, we drove the short, but SUPER narrow, Skyline Drive. It’s only 2 ½ miles long, but what a 2 ½ miles.

At the top we chatted with a couple of dudes on motorcycles. One of them’s going to Chicago this summer, so I gave him some tips.

Then, back on the road. An hour later we were at the grocery store buying provisions for dinner. There was more I wanted to see, but one thing I’ve learned is to pay attention to my body.

I was exhausted. Sun, wind, altitude, climbing, thousands more steps daily than I’d walked at home all added up to one tired Theresa.

I’m embracing this slow(er) travel mindset.

Plus, this entire trip, while fun and providing loads of material for stories, was entirely centered around the Travel and Adventure Show .

The next day we’d try to ride the cog again. Would the third time be the charm? If not, we had one more day and plenty to keep us entertained.

Day 7: Colorado Springs

How do you cap off the first week of a Colorado road trip? By summiting Pikes Peak, that’s how.

Breakfast was ham, egg, and white cheddar on toasted sourdough rounds before driving towards Manitou Springs, fingers crossed. On the way I could see the peak of Pikes Peak, so I was optimistic that we’d be able to take the cog railway to the top.

And we did! We could feel the altitude change almost immediately. I’d get slightly queasy and feel a headache coming on, and that would be my cue to drink more water.

(Until I learned not to let it get to that point. It was hard to focus on drinking when the views outside were so stunning.)

The seating is tight. Basically, you hope you like the people you’re with, because you get real cozy on the ride up.

We happened to be seated with three staff members on their way to work. Talk about a commute! We learned they make the coffee and hot chocolate and it takes about half an hour to get it all ready. We’d already been advised to skip the “world famous” doughnuts.

You only get about forty minutes on the summit, and believe me, after going to the bathroom and refilling your water bottle, you’ll need every one of those. Even moving quickly, we didn’t make it all the way around the top.

TLTip: visit the interpretive center inside, but take pictures to read the placards later. The views are the point of this ride!

We’d talked about driving up to the summit as well, but as soon as we saw that tiny narrow strip of asphalt, we both said no freaking way. So did the powers that be, since it wasn’t open.

Because we’d left the staff at the peak, we had open seats in our row and invited our neighbors across the aisle to spread out if they wanted to.

The ride down seemed much shorter, probably aided by friendly conversation, and before we knew it the train was back at the depot.

That altitude is no joke, and we decided to take Jim back to the house. I drove six blocks to Old Colorado City, and after walking around a bit, found brewery number two out of the three near our rental home.

Kristina helped me pick a beer I’d love and I sipped on that, ate fennel apple salad and fried bread-and-butter pickles and sent out my weekly newsletter.

I was back at the house by five. We had a quiet evening, and were so tired could only be bothered to make a bagged Caesar salad for dinner.

The next day would be a doozie. I loved this slow, more relaxed way of traveling, but It would be our last day in Colorado Springs and I had a LOT to see. I had to be careful not to overdo it, though. The next day we set up for the show.

Day 8: Colorado Springs

It was our fifth day in Colorado Springs. Besides visits to see our parents, we’d never stayed in one place for that long.

My plan was to see Helen Hunt Falls. I plugged it into Google Maps and it took me down a one-lane red dirt road. I probably should have followed my own advice and used a paper map, or at least had an idea of where I was headed.

Or maybe not, because instead I got to drive Gold Camp Road, a winding narrow road up the side of a mountain, through tunnels and around blind bends, passing the rare cyclist, pulling over to hear the silence high above the city.

At first I was nervous because this one-lane road was not one-way, but I managed to get to a parking lot at the top without passing a single vehicle.

From there I could have hiked to the falls, but the sign said it was a mile and a half and I had no service; Jim would have no idea where I was. The road that would have taken me closer was closed. So, I turned around and made my way back down.

This time I encountered a few other drivers, and it was then I noticed the several pull-offs. We all followed one-lane etiquette: wait patiently and wave and nod as we pass.

My adventure complete, I picked Jim up and we drove to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. That hadn’t been terribly high on my list, but Krista from The Broadmoor had told us not to miss it.

I’m glad we listened, because that zoo is AMAZING.

You’re immediately greeted by giraffes. For $3, you can feed them. There are lions and zebras, meerkats and wallabies. The zoo’s name is descriptive: it’s on the side of Cheyenne Mountain. This flatlander felt every step of the incline, but it was worth it.

After communing with the animals, we drove through the zoo to the Shrine of the Sun. Spencer Penrose, founder of The Broadmoor, built it to honor Will Rogers. The cowboy philosopher is buried there.

It’s pretty to look at from the outside, but be sure to go inside and climb to the top. There are rooms with displays every couple of flights so you can catch your breath.

And then lose it again when you see the view.

Next up: Garden of the Gods. We ordered bison burgers at the historic trading post, then drove to the Visitor Center. That initial sight – Pikes Peak shining in the distance, slabs of red rock jutting from the earth – is to behold the very forces that shaped the earth.

Then we got up close and personal with those vertical skipping stones, strolling paved paths as the sun began to set.

We made one final stop for beignets and from-the-source mineral water in Manitou Springs before heading back to the house for our last evening at our rental house. This was such a fantastic place that I asked the owner if I could interview her.

I’d say our last full day in Colorado Springs was a good one.

Day 9: Colorado Springs to Denver

Last day in Colorado Springs. I’d been getting up at five anyway, but this time I put clothes on and headed out. I wanted to see the sunrise.

When our server at Radius Brewing in Emporia found out where we were headed, she said I had to get Dutch Bros. Coffee, so that morning I did.

Coffee in the center console, I drove the ten minutes to Garden of the Gods Overlook, plucked my blanket from the back seat, and found a seat on a rocky bench. The sun slowly painted Pikes Peak, then the tree line, then the red fins jutting from the earth.

I drove through the park, tempted to take Rampart Range Road, another one-laner, but I didn’t have all day. Instead, I stopped in Manitou Springs and finished locating all the fountains for which it’s named.

When I walked in the door, Jim said, “I’m calling an audible.” While checking my location, he’d noticed something we simply had to visit.

But first, we stopped at the Pikes Peak Attraction Center . We’d checked in at so many places that I won a nice stainless steel water bottle.

After that it was a short drive to Penrose Heritage Museum, where we oohed and aahed over Spencer and Julie’s collection of phaetons, drags, and other carriages.

A large portion of the museum tells the story of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, including a dramatic wreck in 2012. Miraculously, both the driver and passenger walked away from the crumpled heap.

We drove east, towards the airport. What Jim had found was the National Museum of World War II Aviation . His uncle had flown a P-38 in the Asian theater and never came home. Jim had never seen one of the planes in person. No wonder, since there aren’t many left.

This museum not only has a flying P-38, it has one that flew in the war. It was an emotional visit, made easier by conversations with the veterans and volunteers who keep those memories alive.

Our last stop in Colorado Springs was at Costco to pick up several pounds of candy, a.k.a. bribery, for the show and to fill the gas tank. We set up most of our booth, checked into our hotel, ordered dinner in, and went to bed early.

The next day the reason for this trip would begin. Were we ready?

Where we stayed Days 9 – 11: Hyatt Place Denver Downtown

Days 10 – 11: Denver

Here it was – the reason we’d made the drive from Illinois to Colorado. But just like our 2017 cross-country trek to San Diego and back had resulted in my first book, I knew this road trip was more than just transportation to a trade show.

We’d uncovered multiple stories, both about places and my past, and I looked forward to getting back home so I could tell them.

But first, the show.

We didn’t know what to expect. The San Diego crowd is slightly different from the Chicago crowd. What would Denver be like?

Turns out, Denver folks are pretty nice. We met hundreds of them, including a woman who grew up in the same Indiana town I did and several who were planning their own epic road trips.

During my presentation I mentioned our visit the day before to the National Museum of World War II Aviation, and a man in the audience came to our booth afterwards to tell us a P-38 pilot had saved his dad’s life.

These are the stories that connect us, that fill my soul.

We didn’t see any of Denver besides the convention center, the parking garage, and the Rockies out our hotel room window, and we’re fine with that.

Day 12: Denver to Omaha, Nebraska

Monday was a driving day. We needed to be in Omaha that night and were on the road by nine. Rain fell. Then turned to snow.

For the next several hours we drove through gentle swells with dry grass sprinkled like powdered sugar. Occasionally we’d pass green fields. There wasn’t a tree in sight until somewhere in Nebraska.

We made it to our hotel in downtown Omaha, walked a block to Upstream Brewing Company, and had a delightful dinner with Lisa and Tim Trudell of The Walking Tourists .

Before we knew it, it was after nine and time to turn in. The next day would be a busy one. It would be Jim’s turn to explore his family’s past.

Day 13: Omaha, Nebraska to Fort Dodge, Iowa

Day 13 had an alarming start – literally.

I’d been up about an hour when suddenly a horn blared and a recorded voice told us to get out of the building immediately. So what did I do? Start packing.

Jim, being the voice of reason that he is, very calmly suggested that I might not want to carry my suitcase down ten flights of stairs.

We left our room and passed two hotel employees as they approached a door three down from ours. I could hear the alarm from inside the room. We kept going, exiting at street level.

When we filed back in with a few other guests, we learned that the steam from the shower had set off the alarm.

That’s one heck of a shower.

Definitely awake, we collected ourselves and got ready to leave. It would be a shorter drive – only three hours to Fort Dodge. Along the way, we followed Tim Trudell’s suggestion and visited the World’s Largest Popcorn Ball.

We met Kerrie and Tiffany from the Fort Dodge Convention and Visitors Bureau at Tea Thyme for lunch. It’s an adorable, family owned restaurant and boutique.

My broccoli cheddar soup and salad with chicken and raspberry vinaigrette were great, but the desserts stole the show: brownie with mint chocolate chip ice cream and Thin Mints for me, and Snickers cheesecake for Jim.

I tell you, that dessert is a Peanut Buster Parfait in cheesecake form and four days later I was still dreaming of it.

I had to leave them in the restaurant for a bit while I took a call in the car. That morning a national publication had emailed me asking if they could interview me about saving money on a road trip.

“I understand you’ve even written books about it.”

Kerrie had arranged appointments with both the Webster County Genealogical Society and the Historical Society so we could look into Jim’s ancestry. Susan had already done some research and had a folder ready for him.

Then the fun really began. Jim got to look through stacks of Assessor’s Records from the late 1800s. We were both trepidatious and felt like we should be wearing white gloves.

There he was. Jim’s great-great-grandfather. As we looked through the frail records, we could almost trace from one year to the next quantifiable aspects of his ancestors’ lives.

After these discoveries, we ogled a house designed by Solon Spencer Beman (Chicago’s Fine Arts Building ) then toured Vincent House , the oldest structure in Fort Dodge. Its first residents included Iowa’s first suffragette.

Then we went on a headstone hunt. While we didn’t find Jim’s great-great grandfather’s, we did find several Goodriches.

Dinner was a true treat: Korean at Gaga and Hoo, followed by two desserts. One to eat and one to hear; the owner serenaded us.

Fort Dodge’s new brand is Dodge the Ordinary . Definitely appropriate.

Day 14: Fort Dodge, Iowa to Home

The final stretch. This was the day we’d get home after two weeks on the road. Jim would stay and I’d turn around and leave again the next morning. Because of that, I was anxious to get going, but I knew we had a couple more things to see.

Fortunately the alarm that woke me was one I set, not one that had been tripped like the day before. We ate breakfast in the room, filled up the tank, then found the famous Fort Dodge Grain Silo Mural.

I’d seen countless pictures of this mural, but nothing captures the grandeur of seeing it in person. At 110 feet high, it’s the largest mural in Iowa. Australian artist Guido van Helten completed the mural in 2018, portraying residents holding pottery in astonishing detail.

I imagined that if I could get close enough, I’d feel like I do viewing Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte . The realistic images would become something unrecognizable. It takes distance to gain the proper perspective.

To me, a road trip does the opposite. By experiencing big cities, small towns, and rural destinations first hand, I get the bigger picture: we’re all more alike than different.

I’ve said often that people are my favorite reason to travel. Before we left, we needed to say goodbye to two that were perfect examples. We hadn’t gotten a picture with Kerrie and Tiffany from Fort Dodge’s convention and visitors bureau the day before, so we stopped by the office.

Bonus: we met Geneva, too! While there, we learned they were launching the new website she’d designed based on their new brand, Dodge the Ordinary.

A quick picture by Chronicle, a sculpture by Dan Perry, and we were off. Well, not before an even faster glimpse of The Fort Museum and Frontier Village. It was closed, but that was fine.

I needed to get home.

We pulled into our drive around four, I think. Jim ran out to fill the tank and pick up pizza while I did laundry. I packed, again, and fell asleep by 8:30.

It felt odd; we were home, but for me it was just a rest stop before I turned around and left again. But, because this was the end of that road trip, so ends this road trip log.

Best road trip route from Denver to Chicago

The most enjoyable route between Denver and Chicago has plenty to see and do along the way. Always allow time for any detours you want to make and pack in as much as possible on this epic adventure.

The route will take you to Pueblo, via Colorado Springs, before passing through Kinsley heading for Kansas City, then onwards to St Louis, and Springfield, before arriving in Chicago.

Much of the journey will involve Interstate roads, which are ideal for a long road trip as it allows you to make excellent progress and gives more time to explore and enjoy all the attractions along the way.

The journey will take you through some beautiful country, crossing the fabled Great Plains, and to some famous cities, and it's entirely down to your personal preference as to where you choose to stop and explore along the way.

Road trip route from Denver to Chicago

Set off from Denver on Interstate 25 South, passing through Colorado Springs. Pay a visit to Pikes Peak, the highest summit in this area of the Rocky Mountains, made famous in the gold rush and home to the international hill climb race.

Continue heading south further, passing Fort Carson and Wigwam, until you reach the city of Pueblo. Known as Steel City, you can take the historic riverwalk and learn all about the city's past at the El Pueblo history museum.

Leaving Pueblo, take US-50 heading east until you reach Dodge City, in southwest Kansas. Here you can relive the days of the wild west and a little under a third of the way into the road trip, it's an ideal place to stay.

From Dodge, continue along the US-50 towards Kinsley, passing by Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site - close to Las Animas - and the Amache National Historic Site at Granada. Both are well worth a visit.

Once you reach Kinsley, continue on US-50 E, with the option to take a detour to Wichita, before joining Interstate 35 N, before arriving at Kansas City.

Famous for its BBQ and jazz history, it is also home to the largest amusement and water park in the Midwest, Worlds of Fun. Revel in the vibrant arts scene and enjoy Midwestern hospitality at its finest with some delicious dining.

Leaving Kansas City, join Interstate 70 heading east and passing through Columbia to arrive at St. Louis. Situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, it's an ideal overnight stop allowing you time to take in the stunning setting.

From St. Louis, you'll take Interstate 55 N, and pass through Springfield before arriving at the ultimate destination, Chicago.

Return to the wild west in Dodge City

Just under 6 hours away from Denver, Dodge City is a location steeped in history as a legendary wild west town from the old frontier. It lies on the path of the famed Santa Fe Trail, near the fort it was named after, Fort Dodge.

The city still features many of its original buildings and locations, while others have since been reconstructed in the original style.

The highly recommended Boot Hill Museum celebrates the city's frontier past, with a recreated old west street, historic buildings like the Fort Dodge Jail, and gunfight re-enactments, a truly unique insight into Wild West life in the 1800s.

With that in mind, the Best Western Country Inn & Suites is situated conveniently within walking distance of many of the city's attractions , including the Gunfighters Wax Museum, with its life-size sculptures of Wyatt Earp and Sitting Bull.

Enjoy a relaxing dip in the indoor heated pool and make use of the on-site fitness center before heading out to enjoy all that downtown Dodge has to offer. Boot Hill Casino continues the Wild West theme, and you can watch a fantastic show at the Depot Theater Company.

Double up in Kansas City

Your journey is divided by the great Missouri River and so is Kansas City. In fact, not only is it divided by the river, but it's also divided by State lines too. About 7 hours away from Chicago, Kansas City is incredibly unique, being situated in the states of Missouri and Kansas.

This road trip can be taken at any time of year, so it's largely down to preference as to when you make the trip.

Chicago is a bustling hive of activity all year round and is very popular in summer as it is home to over 400 festivals. Taste of Chicago in July is the largest outdoor food festival in the world, where you can indulge in all the classic local delicacies.

Early fall is a wonderful time to make the trip as the attractions and roads will be less crowded and the natural beauty of the changing colors make the scenery even more outstanding, especially around Lake Michigan.

Want to see the city from a unique perspective? Take a tram ride up to the top of Gateway Arch for incredible views. Set aside some time to learn about Jefferson’s western expansion in the attached museum, too.

Baseball fans should grab a beer and watch a Cardinals game with some of the nicest baseball fans I’ve met. Looking for something more adventurous? Take a tour of the City Museum which is unlike any museum you’ve ever seen.

After exploring St. Louis for the day, stop by Fitz’s for some small batch specialty sodas and a bite to eat. Just remember to buy some of Fitz’s delicious root beer or black cherry soda for the road.

St. Louis, Missouri to Salina, Kansas  (6 hours 15 minutes)

What to do near Salina, Kansas

Finding something interesting on the road between St. Louis and Estes Park, Colorado is no easy feat, but we found a fun spot. Rock City Park in Minneapolis, Kansas is a perfect stop to stretch your legs and explore on this longer driving day.

Rock City Park is a private park featuring giant round stones scattered across a 200-yard area. These sandstone concretions are several feet tall which visitors are encouraged to climb and explore. Fresh air and easy rock climbing is a welcome relief after a long day of driving.

Where to Stay In Salinas, Kansas:

We opted for a cute Airbnb in the tiny town of Lincoln, Kansas, but Salina, Kansas has several large chain resorts perfect for a quick overnight on your way to Colorado. Rock City Park is only a half-hour drive from Salina, which makes this a perfect stopping point.

Salina, Kansas to Estes Park, Colorado (7 hours 20 minutes)

What to do in Estes Park, Colorado

When picturing Colorado I envision sweeping mountain views and outdoor activities, which is why our next stop was Rocky Mountain National Park. This bucket list national park is extremely popular for a reason.

Wildlife, hiking, and stunning views make Rocky Mountain National Park part of the essential Chicago to Colorado road trip. Our favorite Rocky Mountain National Park activity was taking Old Fall River Road to the Alpine Visitor Center. Old Fall River Road, usually open July 4 through early September, is a narrow one-way road up to the highest visitor center in the park. Winding roads, waterfalls, and ample pull outs to park and admire the views make this a must do when in Estes Park.

The adorable town of Estes Park on the edge of the park has tons of shopping and dining options. It is easy to spend part of a day in Estes Park before or after visiting Rocky Mountain National Park . Quick tip: arrive early to snag hard to find parking spots in Estes Park or be prepared to wait.

Estes Park, Colorado to Rawah Ranch, Jelm, Colorado (Scenic route 3 hours or freeway 3 hours 50 minutes)

What to do at Rawah Ranch

Rawah Ranch is an incredible dude ranch where you instantly feel at home. Riding horses through rivers and up into the mountains on rugged trails are some of our favorite memories of Rawah Ranch. 

In addition to horseback riding, Rawah Ranch offers archery, a shooting range, hiking and fly fishing as part of your stay. Elizabeth loved throwing axes and knives as part of our archery outing. 

Although skeptical I would like it, I tried fly fishing which was absolutely fabulous. The peaceful sound of water, sunny skies, and relaxing atmosphere made fly fishing one of my favorite things at Rawah. If we’re being honest, it helped that our amazing guide handled all the lures and unhooked the fish.

Dining at Rawah Ranch is way above campfire fare. Wood fired pizzas, specialty desserts, and elevated dinners made me glad we were so active. That way I could justify trying everything delicious food they made. Rawah also did a great job managing Elizabeth’s food allergy. Just make sure you let them know about allergies well in advance. The nearest stores are hours away, so they can’t make quick modifications.

The staff at Rawah is friendly, kind, and makes you feel like part of the family. We enjoyed our time chatting with every single one of the staff and can’t wait to see them again soon.

Rawah Ranch to Laramie, Wyoming (1 hour 30 minutes)

What to do in Laramie, Wyoming

Learn some history and marvel at the odd when visiting Laramie, Wyoming. Our first stop was Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site. This prison, built in 1872, is most famous for housing Butch Cassidy.

After the prison closed in 1903, the University of Wyoming acquired the property. The former prison was then converted to an agricultural study center.

After touring the vast Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site, stop by Big Dippers for a scoop of ice cream in downtown Laramie. This adorable shop is locally owned and has delicious ice cream perfect for an afternoon treat.

On your way out of town is an unusual roadside attraction, a huge pyramid in the middle of nowhere. Ames Monument was constructed in 1882 along the Union Pacific line to commemorate the accomplishments of the Ames brothers. The Ames brothers paved the way for the transcontinental railroad despite a fraud scandal.

The monument marks the highest point of the first transcontinental railroad. After the monument was built the railroad tracks were moved further south.  With the railroad gone, the town around it disappeared. Now this peculiar but impressive sight sits atop a crest surrounded by vast emptiness. The Ames Monument is worth a quick detour on your way to Omaha from Laramie.

Laramie, Wyoming to Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa (7 hours 45 minutes)

What to do in Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa are just across the Missouri river from one another which means seeing both states easily with just one stop. Omaha has a well reviewed zoo, but we opted for Lauritzen Gardens on our visit.

The minute you park at Lauritzen Gardens, greenery greets you. The first garden you’ll see is actually in the parking lot on the way into the visitor center. Lauritzen has several gardens, conservatories, and trails throughout the 100-acre facility.

Kids will love the model train garden and children’s garden. Adults will love the sculptured Hitchcock-Kountze Victorian garden and beauty of the Storz Family rose garden when in full bloom.

We leisurely strolled along the entire property and spent about two-and-a-half hours enjoying the serene and beautiful setting before grabbing a quick lunch and heading to jail.

What to do in Council Bluffs , Iowa

Featured on Ghost Adventures , across the border in Council Bluffs, Iowa is a famous jail. Known as the Squirrel Cage Jail, the cells in this prison are all pie shaped. Ten cells per floor and three floors tall, Squirrel Cage Jail previously housed up to 60 inmates and is one of few remaining rotary jails in the United States.

Fewer than twenty rotary jails were built and quickly fell out of favor after prisoner accidents. These jails had one opening per floor and a one-man hand crank moved the cells to the opening. Unfortunately, sometimes intentionally and sometimes purposefully inmates would get limbs stuck between the bars as the prison was rotated.

Although a little more gruesome than our normal family vacation stops, it was fascinating learning about the mechanics of the jail and how the warden plus family members lived and cared for the prison.

Omaha, Nebraska to Chicago, Illinois (7 hours)

Now that you’ve explored a little bit of the Omaha and Council Bluffs area it is sadly time to make the final drive home. 

Final Thoughts On Our Chicago to Colorado Road Trip

Far from a road warrior, I was certainly nervous when I first planned our road trip. However, breaking the driving down into less than 8-hour chunks made for easy travel days especially with only one driver.

Finding fun roadside attractions plus amazing national parks and a family friendly dude ranch on our Chicago to Colorado road trip made incredible mother-daughter vacation memories. We even checked off several new states toward our 50 state challenge in just a few days. I hope this itinerary inspires your own road trip to Colorado!

This spring I decided to hit the road on an adventure from my home in Chicago to my home in Denver. I packed my vehicle, loaded up my clothes, and hit the road. I took a few pit stops along the way, but my first destination was my home in Denver. It was a long drive, but I was glad to have it behind me as soon as I arrived.

On June 22, 2014, I returned home to the Windy City after a two-month road trip. I had been attending a course at the University of Colorado, where I met the love of my life, Tariq. In addition to getting to know her for the first time, I also reconnected with my roots and the places where I was born and raised.

It takes about 1,000 miles to get from Chicago to Denver and 14:20m. Be sure to visit Omaha, Davenport and Des Moines, visit Starved Rock State Park and the Morton Arboretum, visit Cody Park and the Red Rocks Amphitheater.

For the discerning traveler, the inland areas are just as incredible as the east and west coasts, so read all the way through and get inspired for this unique trip.

How far is Denver from Chicago and how long is the trip?

In addition to a number of roadside attractions, a road trip from Chicago to Denver also offers some great sites and attractions in the larger cities along the way, such as Omaha and Des Moines.

The fastest route is 1000 miles long and will get you to Denver in 14 hours and 20 minutes. It is theoretically possible to go there in 2 days, but it is preferable to spend at least one day on each stopover if possible.

To Colorado, take Interstate 80 and Interstate 76, with the former passing through several cities, which can cause traffic jams. Still, there are four to six lanes on the entire route, so don’t expect major delays.

You will be driving along the Platte River for most of the trip, so visit the Platte River State Park once you arrive in Omaha.

You will drive mainly through the Great Plains, which are not only easy to traverse, but also very beautiful to see. You may be able to make do with a light meal, as there are plenty of places to stay and shop.

Best route for a road trip from Chicago to Denver

The best road connection between Chicago and Denver is the combined Interstate 80-Interstate 76 route. Not only is this the shortest option, but it’s also a pretty quick detour to the sights near the other routes.

Chicago to Denver Road

Leaving Chicago and heading directly west, take Route 88 past the Morton Arboretum to Rochelle. From there, you can take Highway 39 north to Anderson’s Japanese Gardens or south to Starved Rock State Park.

Once back on the main road, continue on Interstate 80 to Davenport, then on Interstate 80 through Iowa City, Des Moines and Omaha. Next, you will see the Great Platte River Road Arch, which leads to North Platte.

Shortly after passing Lake McConaughy, you will find yourself in Colorado. There, take Interstate 76 through the Pawnee National Grassland and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, then head toward Denver.

Best places to stop between Chicago and Denver

If there’s one thing about this trip from Chicago to Denver, it’s that the cities are beautiful and the hotels excellent. Here are some of the best places to stay along the way:

Life in Des Moines

If you want to split your trip from Chicago to Denver into two days (and you absolutely should), spend the night in Des Moines.

Iowa’s capital is a business town, and it shows in the impressive architecture, especially in some of the hotels. If you want to feel like an insurance tycoon over the weekend, book a room at the Hilton Des Moines Downtown.

No trip to Iowa would be complete without the beautiful capital city.

Best time to drive from Chicago to Denver

In many ways, there is no better time to take a road trip from Chicago to Denver. Since most of the sights you will visit are in cities, your time should be tailored to the cities you want to focus on the most.

You will spend most of the trip in Iowa and Nebraska. So it’s good to know that the hot, humid climate of the Great Plains can make summer driving quite uncomfortable, especially if you make the trip in two days.

If you plan to explore these states in detail, it’s probably best to do so in the fall, when the temperature doesn’t rise above 70 degrees and leaves can be seen on the trees. This is also the time when harvest season begins, so Nebraska is especially beautiful at this time of year.

As for Denver, every season has its advantages. It is one of the few examples of a city that you can visit once per season and have a different experience each time.

Autumn brings out the best in Denver, especially at sunset.

Denver usually attracts large crowds of tourists in the summer, and also does well in the winter, thanks to the nearby slopes of the Rockies. However, keep in mind that summer temperatures often reach 90 degrees and you’ll have plenty to do in the winter when you’re not skiing.

Day 1:   Start off your scenic drive by renting a car from Enterprise in Chicago. If you’re flying in, the O’Hare International Airport is about 45 minutes from downtown. And there’s a lot to do and see in Chi Town. Check out the architecture of the city by visiting the Willis Tower (previously called Sears Tower). Catch a baseball game at Wrigley Field or take a leisurely stroll through the Magnificent Mile. Depending on what time of year you visit, make sure to bring a jacket. The Windy City gets its name for a reason.

2. Wisconsin Dells, WI

Drive Time: approximately 3 hours Distance: approximately 193 miles  

Once you’re set, head north on Interstate 90 to our first stop in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Dells is a fun place to visit any time of the year but summertime is arguably the best time. With its variety of theme parks and entertainment centers, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Kalahari Resorts, Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park and Noah’s Ark Water Park are just three possible destinations. If theme parks aren’t your thing, check out Mirror Lake State Park for nature trail hikes and camping.

3. Corn Palace

Drive Time: approximately 6 hours Distance: approximately 445 miles  

Day 2:   The next stage of our journey will take you across Wisconsin and into Minnesota, the land of 10,000 Lakes. Stop by Rochester, MN to fuel up and fill empty bellies before heading to South Dakota. Our first tourist stop in South Dakota is Mitchell. Mitchell is the home of the World’s Only Corn Palace . The corn palace was built to show the world how the state of South Dakota was agriculturally robust. Take some fun photos to add to the family album before hitting the road again.

4. Wall Drug

Drive Time: approximately 3 hours

Distance: approximately 221 miles

Watch out for jackalopes as you make your way to our next stop. Wall Drug Store in Wall, South Dakota is a popular tourist stop for folks headed to see the Black Hills and the Badlands National State Park. Since 1931, the drug store drew in tourists with the promise of free ice water and now it is a mecca for gifts and souvenirs. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, pick up a bag of salt water taffy before heading out.

5. Mt. Rushmore

Drive Time: approximately 1 hour Distance: approximately 76 miles  

After departing from Wall, you’ll start seeing the famous Black Hills of South Dakota. The Black Hills are home to our third and probably most well-known stop, Mt. Rushmore . Take some time to walk along the Avenue of Flags and see this majestic man-made marvel. The National Memorial features the likenesses of former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Construction of the monument began on October 4, 1927 and was completed on October 31, 1941.

Drive Time: approximately 6 hours Distance: approximately 367 miles  

Day 3:   The final leg of the journey will take you south along the highways of South Dakota and into Colorado proper. Once you’ve arrived in Denver, catch a Rockies baseball game or go to the Denver Botanic Gardens. Cruise along Mount Evans Scenic Byway before dropping off your rental car at one of our many Denver locations. If you need to catch a flight, the Denver International Airport is a 30 minute drive from downtown. Make sure to allow for enough time to make this drive as highway I-70 can get backed up throughout the day.

Who carved Mount Rushmore?

A sculptor by the name of Gutzon Borglum, along with 400 workers, carved the presidents’ faces to represent America's first 130 years of existence. The sculpting process involved dynamite, drilling holes into the cliff face, and removing pieces by hand. The idea for Mount Rushmore was originally conceived in 1923 by historian Jonah Leroy "Doane" Robinson to promote South Dakota tourism. The following year, Robinson convinced sculptor Borglum to view the location to verify whether the carving was even possible. Borglum chose the location for the sculpture because it faced southeast and experienced maximum sun exposure. 

When was Mount Rushmore built?

Mount Rushmore was built between October 4, 1927, and October 31, 1941. In 1933, before its completion, Mount Rushmore was taken under the National Park Service's jurisdiction and a tram was upgraded to allow workers to reach the top.Washington's face was completed and dedicated in 1934, Jefferson's in 1936, Lincoln's in 1937, and Roosevelt's in 1939. The original plan was to carve the figures from head to waist, but sculptor Borglum died in 1941 and insufficient funding forced the carving to end.

What is the Corn Palace?

The World's Only Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota, is a popular tourist destination that celebrates corn and community. It originally started as a place where locals could enjoy stage entertainment and the annual fall festival. Today, the multi-purpose facility serves as a venue for sporting events, concerts, exhibits, and other community events, including the beloved Corn Palace Festival. The Ultimate Colorado Road Trip Itinerary

From hiking in national parks to exploring charming towns, here's what to see and do on a road trip through Colorado.

To experience the best of the U.S. via the great open road, look to Colorado. This picturesque state straddling the Rocky Mountains is home to some of the most astounding stretches of highway in the country, connecting mountain resorts and artists' colonies to pioneer towns. In short, it's the perfect place for the ultimate road trip. With that in mind, we've devised a route that hits plenty of spots that make the Centennial State so special.

Our itinerary takes you through three spectacular national parks: Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes. While the last one doesn't require an admission fee, the first two do ($30 per car, including entry for all passengers, for one day or $35 per car for seven days of access). As of May 24, 2024, you must reserve a timed pass to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. Without further ado, here's our handy guide to everything you should do on a Colorado road trip.

Colorado's capital and biggest city is inevitably where any road trip should start. Not only is Denver home to the state's largest and busiest airport, and therefore where most travelers arrive, it also acts as a gateway from the plains in the east into the Rocky Mountains. There's plenty to do here before you start your journey: Grab some green chiles at El Taco de Mexico, explore historic Larimer Square, go to one of the city's great museums — the Denver Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature & Science are great places to start — and perhaps buy yourself a pair of cowboy boots. Whatever you do, make sure your last activity is getting in your car and driving northwest.

Denver's smaller, more free-spirited sibling Boulder is home to the University of Colorado's main campus, which means you can expect a whole lot of restaurants and businesses catering to college students. You'll also find some sublime hiking on and around the Flatirons , an iconic formation formed by dramatic, diagonally tilted slabs of rock.

Your journey northwest continues to Estes Park, the first destination on this route wholly within the Rocky Mountains. This quaint town has become a popular tourist stop, due to its proximity to some of the region's best rock climbing and mountain trails. Estes Park is also considered the jumping-off point for much of Rocky Mountain National Park , where you can easily spend several days exploring backwoods trails, finding waterfalls, and spotting wildlife. This part of the itinerary is optional, but definitely encouraged if you have the time.

Trail Ridge Road

If you're road-tripping between May and October, you're in luck. The next portion of the route contains what is considered to be one of the most beautiful drives in America: Trail Ridge Road , a switchback-saturated stretch of U.S. Highway 34 that crosses over the Continental Divide and is closed during the fall and winter. In the spring and summer, you can pass through some of the region's highest mountains. Witness the sun glinting off glaciers as you weave through dramatic passes and drive along impossibly blue ponds until you reach Grand Lake. Refuel, then it's onto the next oasis.

Glenwood Springs

The aptly named Glenwood Springs is the hot spring capital of the area, with huge natural hot springs bubbling up from the earth. It's just what you want to see after a long drive from Grand Lake, and a particularly scenic remedy for driving-related cramps. The town is located right where the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers meet, in a valley cradled by steep mountain faces.

Telluride and Ouray

Drive a few hours from Glenwood Springs and you'll enter gold rush territory. Sure, you can try panning in the Uncompahgre or San Miguel Rivers — it's a good way to cool off, but maybe not to get rich — though the real draw in Telluride and Ouray is the history. These little mountain villages are chock-full of relics from the area's Wild West days, from museums like the Ouray Alchemist Pharmacy Museum to mining tours in Telluride. They're also both tucked away in furtive, but gorgeous, canyons. You can hit Telluride, which is larger, more bustling, and artsier (it's also home to the Telluride Film Festival ), or Ouray, which is smaller and more rustic. Either way, we're venturing south.

Mesa Verde National Park

Continuing south, you'll trade the gold rush era for more ancient times at Mesa Verde National Park . These lands in Montezuma County were once inhabited by the cliff-dwelling ancestors of the Pueblo people, who constructed homes out of the sandstone from the cliffs and mesas on which they were built. The result is extraordinarily dramatic and incredibly enlightening. While there are hundreds of these sites throughout the park, the most impressive is Cliff Palace, pictured above, which lies in the shadow of a magnificent rock arch. Check out its elaborate rooms and the decorative plasters, all of which have withstood erosion and time.

Beginning our turn east, Durango is the first major town on the map after leaving Mesa Verde. It's a great place to stop and rest for a while, combining the laid-back charm of small-town America with a rich history rooted in its importance as a railroad hub. It has also served as the backdrop in many Hollywood Western films , and you can visit several shooting locations from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Drive three hours down Route 160 and you'll arrive in a place that feels so otherworldly, you'll feel like you're on another planet. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve seems totally incongruous with the landscape around it, but that's what makes it so enticing — towering, ivory-colored dunes up to 750 feet tall are an echo of the nearby mountains. Camping here is the move, as the effect of the clear night sky over the dunes is a popular astronomical phenomenon that must be seen to be believed.

There's no better place in Colorado to witness the awe-inspiring force of water than Cañon City, so named for the steep cliffs carved by the Arkansas River. Whether you're looking for a gentle, comfortable sightseeing experience like the Royal Gorge Route Railroad or a more extreme method like rafting, you'll find it here, in addition to plenty of wineries and restaurants where you can luxuriate after feasting your eyes.

Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is the last stop on your vehicular journey, and it's a bit of a doozy. Not only is this the second-largest city in the state, it's also a stone's throw from two of Colorado's most impressive natural landmarks: Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods . The first can be easily ascended by car via Pikes Peak Highway, and the views from its 14,115-foot summit are truly magnificent — they actually inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write " America the Beautiful ." The second, Garden of the Gods, is a gorgeous public park that combines strikingly red rocks with lush forest scenery.

After indulging in your outdoor activity of choice, end your trip with green chiles at King's Chef Diner and bask in the success of a road trip well spent. If you're returning to Denver to fly home, it's just an hour's drive or so north to reach the airport.

Mid way is in Nebraska. Omaha is a bit less than halfway. Small farm towns after that most of the way to denver. I have stopped in a couple and felt perfectly safe. But i am a white male....

If you want to split it up, Lincoln is a great stop. We usually get a functional chain hotel out along I-80 then drive into town for dinner. Lots of other options. If you can push on to North Platte, that, too, is a good choice.

I can't imagine you would have any issue with your personal safety. We've always found a very diverse group of travelers along I-80.

Hi! Nebraska is my home state so I drive along 80 often. I agree with Lincoln as a stop - it’s a college town so it’s a bit more progressive than other areas. And decent places to eat. though even in small towns across the interstate I don’t think you’ll have issues. Nebraska is very white, yes, but there is a reasonable sized Hispanic population. Be prepared to be bored with the drive ;-)

I will also vote for staying overnight in Lincoln. As older females, my sister and I have done this trip several times- both together and solo - and have always felt safe driving and staying at a chain hotel off I-80.

To see it all, you’d need a minimum of 3 weeks, which would be an amazing Colorado road trip! This Colorado itinerary starts and ends in cities, but let’s be honest – a visit to Colorado is meant to be explored outdoors! Here are some road trip essentials you might want to take into consideration as you plan a trip to Colorado…

• Collapsible cooler. Perfect for traveling this cooler folds down and pops up when you need to keep food and beverages cold.
• Sunscreen and layers . No matter what time of year you visit Colorado, you’ll want to add or peel off layers as you adventure around these amazing destinations. And at this high of elevation, you’ll need sunscreen to protect your skin.
• GoPro. Take beautiful action photos and videos from your car, while hiking or sightseeing with a GoPro camera . It’s perfect for smooth videos, but also allows you to save your phone battery.
• Satellite communicator. Driving through the mountains and more remote parts of Colorado, you’ll run into a lot of the state that’s not within cell phone range. This satellite communicator allows for 2-way communication in the case of an emergency. Use it on a hiking trail, in a national park or road where there’s no cell phone service.

It’s got a cute and lively downtown that seems to be busy year-round, too!

Best things to do in Boulder

• Visit Pearl Street Mall. Watch street performers, shop cute boutique stores, grab some ice cream or people watch on one of the best downtown spots in all of Colorado.
• Do a tasting at a brewery or microbrewery. Boulder has more breweries per capita than any other city in the US, so you’ll likely find a good one. 🙂 Here’s some Boulder Breweries to check out.
• Hike or climb the Flatirons. A sight to see in real life, these giant tilted rock slabs are beyond impressive. The Mesa Trail is 13 miles and will take you past the best flatirons.
• Visit Eldorado Canyon State Park. View really cool landscapes and a great spot for a picnic, hike, climb, kayaking or paddle boarding. Note: check the official website for timed entry reservation days.
• Food! With over 300 restaurants, there’s plenty to choose from! We decided on tacos on a rooftop bar after a day exploring the area…perfection!

Estes Park (road trip Colorado: gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park)

Estes Park, Colorado is a fun mountain town best known for y ear-round outdoor activities. From snowshoeing to skiing, hiking and zip lining, Estes Park has something for everyone.

Since Estes Park is neighbors to Rocky Mountain National Park, the scenery is pretty incredible.

If you’e up for a thrill, head over to the the Stanley Hotel. It’s one of America’s most haunted hotels and was the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining . (I honestly wasn’t brave enough for this adventure during my time in Estes Park!)

Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road (a Colorado itinerary favorite)

Recommended time: 1-3 days

It’s the kind of place that takes your breath away. Rocky Mountain National Park is beautiful beyond measure , and a place that you could spend a week exploring without getting bored.

But since this is a Colorado road trip itinerary, let’s keep it to 1-3 days, okay?

From Estes Park to the next destination in Grand Lake, you’ll take Highway 34 right through the Park, also called Trail Ridge Road. And it’s got to be one of the most beautiful drives in the state!

So popular, that the National Park Service is now requiring timed entry reservations for a majority of the time the road is open (it’s closed during winter). This will take a bit more planning in advance, so be sure to factor this in with your Colorado trip planning.

Top things to do in Rocky Mountain National Park

• Hiking! There’s over 350 miles of hiking trails in the park – just pack your bear spray !
• Visit – or swim in – a gorgeous lake. Bear Lake, Adams Falls, or Sprague Lake are really beautiful.
• Witness the alpine tundra at the Alpine Visitor Center. We visited the park in late June and found many, many feet of snow still packed on the mountainside at the visitor center. While you’re there, make sure to hike the Alpine Ridge Trail to see the summit at 12,000 feet!

Pro tip: pack layers for Rocky Mountain National Park (my favorite travel pieces, merino wool , is perfect for this). Even if you’re just driving through for the day, at over 11,000 feet in elevation, getting out of your car is cold even in the hottest parts of summer.

Visit the quaint town of Grand Lake, during your Colorado road trip

Recommended time: 1-2 days

This picturesque town in Colorado is often overlooked by tourists – which is part of the appeal in my opinion! Grand Lake offers gorgeous lake and mountain views (it’s neighbors to Rocky Mountain National Park, after all) and is a quiet little village.

Walk the main street for little shops and restaurants. Or buy a souvenir to remember this amazing Colorado road trip adventure you’re on! Oh, and the ice cream shop in town is to die for so make sure you grab a cone while you’re there.

My favorite thing to do on Grand Lake is spend time on the water! Kayak the lakes and canals – it might just be the highlight of your trip!

Pro tip: rent kayaks, paddle boards, pedal boats or even motor boats in advance as they sell out quickly in such a small town. Grand Lake water rentals here.

Colorado road trip continued – Central Colorado

Ok, so this adventure has explored some fun parts of northern Colorado – if you choose to add them to your Colorado itinerary! More scenic spots ahead!

Hit the slopes in Keystone, CO

Get your skis or board ready to experience some of the best skiing in the country! If you love being on the snow, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado is the place to do it.

For the purposes of this article I chose Keystone, but there’s a ton of spots to ski right off I-70. Breckenridge, Aspen and Vail are popular ski resorts, too. Just make sure to rent equipment and make reservations well in advance during peak ski season.

My first (and only) snowboarding experience was in the Rocky Mountains, and I’d highly recommend it!

Beautiful Colorado road trip spot: Dillon Reservoir

Recommended time: 1/2 to 1 day

If you like water activities, Dillon Reservoir is the place to be. A huge lake with the perfect mountain backdrop, Dillon Lake is gorgeous.

Kayaking or boating, hiking or bike riding, it’s an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. I highly recommend renting bikes and riding the trails around the lake for a unique Colorado experience!

One of the coolest things to do in Dillon is hike the Sapphire Point Overlook Trail. It’s more of a walk than a hike, and offers beautiful views of the lake. Best time to go is the middle of a sunny day with the sun overhead for truly sapphire colored water.

Be sure to head out to one of the local breweries in town for some brews, pizza or burgers to wind down the day. Such an amazing stop during this road trip Colorado!

Year-round adventure in Frisco, Colorado

Head to Frisco for all things adventure in Colorado! Of course there’s skiing, but there’s also tubing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, a dirt bike track, disc golfing, kayaking and hiking.

So basically, if you like being outdoors you’ll love Frisco! With plenty of options for accommodations and dining, this is a perfect one-day stop on an epic Colorado road trip.

Frisco is especially known as a winter destination for tubing and cross-country skiing in the winter. It’s the perfect stop for Colorado trip planning in the wintertime.

Experience Vail, Colorado

Vail, Colorado is the largest ski mountain in Colorado and it’s one of the bigger tourist spots on this list . Aside from mountain adventures, this town hosts lots of annual events and festivals, so there’s always something to do in Vail.

Vail is an excellent spot to enjoy a more luxurious side of Colorado. Find your zen at a yoga class or spa. Stay at one of the nicest resorts in all of Colorado, overlooking the gorgeous Rockies.

Head on over to Vail Village to experience for dining and shopping. Grab an ice cream cone at Sundae and walk the village.

Oh, and hit the slopes in over 5200 acres of terrain. If you’re into snowboarding or skiing, Vail is a great spot for it!

Sylvan Lake State Park (another favorite place to vacation in Colorado)

Okay, okay. This might be one of the most beautiful places in Colorado! I got the pleasure of spending a week exploring Sylvan Lake State Park a few years ago and honestly, I loved every minute of it.

If you’re looking for a more rustic vacation, try one of the cabins, yurts or campsites. Then rent kayaks or paddle boards on the lake and soak in the views!

Try the Sylvan Lake Trail or Sneve Gulch Trail for the best views of Sylvan Lake! Hiking through trails of Aspen trees is super fun, too. Just remember to pack your bear spray , hiking shoes and plenty of water.

Pro tip: if you’re planning to do any hiking in Colorado, be prepared with the right gear. These hiking shoes are my favorite and super grippy with ankle support. And trekking poles will definitely help you with those steep inclines, plus they’re compact too.

Perfect Colorado itinerary – heading west

As you transition from the jagged Rocky Mountains to the fun western part of the state, the landscape begins to change. With generally warmer weather, these destinations and activities will have you Colorado trip planning allll the places you can fit into your timeline!

Cross Hanging Lake off your bucket list

Recommended time: 1/2 day

I’ve already covered some beautiful places, and yet there’s more! Hanging Lake is one of the most uniquely gorgeous lakes in all of Colorado, and is extremely popular. Because of the beautiful lake’s allure, it’s accessible by permit only.

Schedule your hike weeks in advance during the summer months as it fills up fast. This trail is 2.4 miles round trip and it’s got a steep incline. You’re rewarded with a gorgeous view of this geologic gem! It’s so beautiful and such a unique experience, you’ll have fun crossing it off your Colorado bucket list .

Go hiking in Glenwood Canyon

Recommended time: 1/2 day to 1 day

The Glenwood Canyon area is one of my favorite spots in all of Colorado. Interstate 70 west of Denver runs along the Colorado River and both cut right through the canyon. And while the drive through the canyon is beautiful, seeing it while hiking is even better .

Colorado itinerary continues: get hot in Glenwood Springs

The biggest thing that brings tourists to Glenwood Springs is the natural hot springs. Visit the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, which is the largest mineral hot springs in the world!

I’ve visited the hot springs in both winter and summer, and both seasons are fun. Make sure to get there early during summer and weekends, as the pool fills up quickly. Find out more about the Hot Springs Pool here .

While you’re in Glenwood Springs, make sure you check out the downtown historic district . It’s a great spot for street performers and to grab a bite to eat.

Speaking of which, I had the best tacos of my entire life at Slope and Hatch. They’ve received accolades from Travel & Leisure and Insider as one of the top taco places in the US. More on that here .

Colorado road trip with kids? Visit Fruita!

Recommended time: up to 1/2 day

The town of Fruita is relatively small, but for kids it’s an adventure land! One of the main attractions is Dinosaur Journey Museum.

It’s an interactive museum showcasing over 15,000 fossils, a dig site where kids can search for bones, visit a real paleontology lab, see robotic dinosaurs and more. My favorite is the Triceratops skull, which is possibly the largest ever found on earth.

Visit an icon: Colorado National Monument (must-do on this Colorado road trip itinerary)

By the time you drive to Colorado National Monument, Colorado, you’re no longer in the mountains – you’re in the desert! In fact, it’s one of the best stops on a Denver to Moab road trip as well!

Located near Grand Junction, on the western edge of the state, Colorado National Monument is the 2nd nationally protected on this list.

You could probably spend days exploring Colorado National Monument, but to see the highlights, make sure to take the scenic road – Rim Rock Drive . With 19 viewpoints in just 23 miles, it offers some of the best views in Colorado!

• Hike Devil’s Kitchen, 1.5 miles

While there’s simply too many good spots in Colorado to cover them all, here are the highlights of the southern part of the state. And the perfect way to loop back around to the starting point, with plenty of adventures along the way.

Next Colorado road trip stop: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a huge park split up into 3 sections – South Rim, North Rim and East Portal. For the purposes of this Colorado itinerary, we’re going to focus on the South Rim section.

This national park is jaw-dropping beautiful, and to be honest, not for those afraid of heights! Many hiking trails and even the road is right beside steep drop offs, so use caution in this park.

One of my favorite parts of this park is the fact that it’s one of the least visited parks in Colorado. So it’s not packed with people, even during peak season! Making this park one of the best places to vacation in Colorado .

Top sights and things to do at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

• Take the 7-mile South Rim Drive
• Painted Wall Overlook
• Hike Rim Rock Nature Trail, 1 mile
• Devil’s Lookout
• Pulpit Rock Overlook
• Hike Oak Flat Loop Trail, 1.3 miles
• Stay until dark and stargaze – it’s an international dark sky park!

Pro tip: if you’re planning to visit all the national parks on this list, be sure to get an annual pass – America the Beautiful pass – through the National Park Service. It allows you access to all National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands for 12 months, which is a bargain if you plan to visit 3 or more.

I’ve used mine all across Colorado, but also while hiking Avalanche Lake Trail in Glacier National Park, while visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park and underrated national monuments like Petroglyph and Bandelier in New Mexico.

Drive the Million Dollar Highway: Ouray to Silverton

Recommended time: 1 hour

If you’re looking for a scenic drive in Colorado , this is it! Highway 550 from Ouray to Silverton is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway and if you’re on the best Colorado road trip ever, this needs to be part of the journey!

You’ll experience hairpin turns, jagged cliffs, fun lookouts that will leave you breathless. And all in less than 25 miles of road!

Bonus if you take this road in the fall with the gorgeous changing leaves. It’s truly one of the best scenic drives in all of the U.S.!

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (underrated stop on this Colorado itinerary)

Home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, this place is beyond impressive! And let me tell ya, if you have some adventure in you, this is a great stop for your Colorado road trip itinerary!

One of the best things to do at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is sand sledding and sand boarding! Specifically designed to help you fly down sand hills, make sure you rent the right gear! Here’s more info for renting sand sleds and such .

More adventurous things to do in Great Sand Dunes National Park

• Go off-roading up the scenic Medano Pass Primitive Road (4-wheel drive necessary!)
• Camp with the best view of the stars!
• Hike to Zapata Falls, 0.9 miles

This is such an underrated stop on this Colorado road trip, but a fun adventure for all ages!

White water rafting down the Arkansas River

One of my first trips I took with girlfriends was a white-water rafting adventure trip in Colorado. The Arkansas River is powerful and impressive!

There are many great options for white-water rafting in Colorado . Perhaps one of the coolest spots is taking a trip down the Arkansas River under the Royal Gorge Bridge near Canon City, Colorado.

Royal Gorge Bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the U.S. Seeing it from underneath is a whole new perspective, too! More on the bridge, here .

Back to rafting…you can take a half or whole day rafting trip . Whole day trips include lunch and typically let you experience more views of the canyon, wildlife and of course the river.

Pro tip: most rafting companies only operate May 1st – September 30th, so make sure your trip is in this window if you’re wanting to raft down a river.

The last stretch of this Colorado road trip is just as fun as the rest of it! With mountain views, city activities and a few more surprises, this beautiful is continuing to steal our hearts during this epic Colorado vacation!

Hang out with giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Ranked one of the top 10 zoos in the country , the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo does not disappoint! I’ve visited the zoo multiple times and the animal interactions are unique and fun. Feeding the giraffes is a must-do in this zoo!

The zoo is open year-round and has indoor and outdoor exhibits, perfect for even a winter Colorado road trip! Just a note though – there’s lots of hills so be prepared for a good walk when visiting the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

You can enjoy as little as an hour visiting this zoo, or spend 1/2 day or more. It’s a fun spot for all ages on this road trip Colorado.

Visit Garden of the Gods (classic stop on this Colorado road trip itinerary)

No Colorado road trip is complete without a visit to Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs ! You could spend a day (or more) hiking the trails and checking out the scenery, but for this Colorado itinerary let’s keep it to a day.

For a simple hike with tons of scenery, I’d recommend the Perkins Central Garden Trail. It’ relatively flat and is about 1.5 miles. The best way to see the park is though the walking trails so plan to spend some time here checking out the scenery.

If you have a bit more time, you can hike the Siamese Twins Garden of the Gods . This scenic trail has fun views of funky rock formations, and overlooks the park and Pikes Peak.

Bonus: Garden of the Gods is free!

Colorado Springs is one of the best places to visit in August , so if you happen to be planning your adventure in late summer, you’re going to love it!

Epic views at Pikes Peak (a Colorado itinerary must-see)

Nicknamed America’s Mountain, Pikes Peak is a must-do on a trip to Colorado. With an elevation of over 14,000 feet, if you choose to drive you’ll have quite the climb!

Many people take a car up to the view point and visitor center. If you’re maybe not quite comfortable ascending 8,000 feet up from Colorado Springs, you can opt to take a guided tour .

Oh, and expect the viewpoints to be crowded. Nearly 6 million people visit Pikes Peak each year. Starting your route early in the morning may help to beat the crowds!

Pro tip: pack your layers here. I visited in the middle of summer and wasn’t as prepared as I could have been. Learn from my mistake, okay?

Colorado road trip – Denver

Alright so no Colorado road trip itinerary is complete without some time in Denver. There’s about a million things to do in Denver, so it can be hard to choose what to do!

Each time I’ve vacationed in Denver, I made a visit to the 16th Street Mall in downtown. It’s the perfect spot for dining, bar-hopping, shopping and people watching. An outdoor pedestrian mall, 16th street is a mile long that offers a free shuttle, stopping at every block. So hop on and off as you please.

More things to do in Denver

• Denver Botanical Gardens
• Union Station
• Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater
• Enjoy a brewery or microbrewery
• Art District on Santa Fe

As you finish your time in Denver, you can loop back up to Boulder, drive home or back to the airport to fly out. What an amazing adventure, right?!

Best Short Road Trips From Denver (No Overnight Needed)

Here you’ll find a great selection of road trips starting in Denver that’ll be perfect whether you’re traveling solo or with a group and want a short road trip not too far away from the city.

1. Rocky Mountain National Park 

Distance: about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Denver by car

You can’t talk about road trips from Denver and not mention the iconic Rocky Mountain National Park . This park is not only full of incredible mountainous landscapes but it’s also home to diverse wildlife and endless outdoor recreation opportunities. 

I’ve personally explored the park and love the endless hiking trails that are suitable for a variety of different skill levels. Whether you are looking for an easy scenic trail or to conquer the backcountry on a multi-day adventure, the opportunities are endless. 

And don’t forget to take a drive along the famous Trail Ridge Road , one of the most scenic roads in the United States. It’s one of my absolute favorite things to do in the park!

2. Pikes Peak

Distance: about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Denver by car

No list of the best Denver road trip ideas would be complete without Pikes Peak , one of the most famous mountains in Colorado .

Pikes Peak sits about 100 miles south of Denver and is one of Colorado’s legendary 14ers. This means that the summit sits at over 14,000 feet above sea level! 

The most popular way to reach the summit is by driving, but you can also hike or bike. Just be aware that the elevation and steep incline are no joke. To help, here is a Pikes Peak trail map .

3. Colorado Springs

Another major city in Colorado is Colorado Springs , which is one of the best short road trips from Denver thanks to its fun local attractions.

It’s famous for its stunning Garden of the Gods , vibrant downtown, and proximity to popular outdoor adventure spots like Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountains .

My favorite spot is the otherworldly Garden of the Gods, known for its towering, jagged red rock formations. It’s a fantastic place for hiking, cycling, and rock climbing.

After getting active, you can stroll around Downtown Colorado Springs, which the state has designated a Creative District. Here you can enjoy restaurants, bars, museums, performances, shopping, and lots of fun events.

Distance: about 1 hour and 50 minutes from Denver by car

Vail is one of the best day trips from Denver in winter, which is also my favorite time to visit for its world-class ski resort.

It’s one of the best in the state, known for its charming Vail Village , après-ski scene, and legendary Back Bowls —there are 7 of them containing 2,785 skiable acres in total!

However, if winter sports aren’t your thing, Vail is also fun in summer , spring, and fall. It offers countless mountain biking trails and hiking trails , as well as some of the best spas in Colorado.

Plus, exploring Vail Village is enjoyable year-round, with its excellent shops, restaurants, and top-notch accommodations.

If you’re staying overnight, I highly recommend the Sonnenalp Vail , a luxurious resort within walking distance of Vail Ski Resort that also offers lots to do on and off-site.

5. Breckenridge

When it comes to iconic mountain towns in Colorado, Vail and Breckenridge are top contenders. They’re not too far from each other either. Breckenridge , also called Breck by locals, is just 36 miles away from Vail. 

But what makes Breckenridge special compared to Keystone , Vail, and other world-class resorts isn’t just its famous ski slopes but also its vibrant downtown area.

Unlike typical ski villages, Breckenridge is a complete town with shops, restaurants, bars, and homes. Its local feel makes it a favorite destination of mine all year round.

For a local tip, if winter sports aren’t your thing and you aren’t necessarily looking for road trips from Denver in winter, I recommend visiting Breck during Oktoberfest .

Breckenridge Brewery hosts this massive celebration every year, offering a fantastic way to enjoy the surroundings, take in the mountain views, and immerse yourself in the area’s culture while sipping delicious local beers.

Distance: about 45 minutes from Denver by car

One of the best places to visit around Denver is Boulder —which holds a special place in my heart as I’ve visited this charming college town many times, and each visit leaves me with great memories. 

I love strolling down Pearl Street and enjoying the various bars and restaurants. The University of Colorado Boulder adds a lively atmosphere to the town. And with the mountains so close, it’s an unbeatable experience.

Plus, it is one of the best kid-friendly road trips from Denver. As a new mom myself, I would highly recommend a visit to Boulder with kids because it’s close, has so much to do, and has plenty of restaurants with outdoor seating to eat al fresco with your little ones.

My personal favorite for this is at the Rayback Collective , a food truck park that also features a bar, coffee, and lawn games as well as events like live music, trivia, and comedy.

Some other things to do with kids in Boulder include going on small hikes, enjoying local parks, and visiting the Junkyard Social Club where kids can have fun in unique play spaces while the adults mingle and enjoy coffee and cocktails.

7. Fort Collins

Distance: about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Denver by car

Fort Collins is another cool town just a short drive from Denver. It’s one of the best driving trips from Denver thanks to how easy it is to get there.

Fort Collins is known for its origins as a 19th-century military fort, live music venues, and craft beer scene. For the latter, be sure to visit Zwei Brewing Co. for German-style beers and Maxline Brewing for craft beers paired with live bands.

The area also has other local wellness options. You can get massages and treatments at sumptuous spas like Splendor Mountain Day Spa or inhale vapors and sweat out toxins at the Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves .

If you’re looking to get active, you’ll find loads of hiking trails in the nearby White River National Forest .

Additionally, the town itself is charming. I recommend heading to Glenwood Canyon Brewpub for drinks and a meal during your visit.

Best Weekend Road Trips From Denver 

If you’re open to a slightly longer road trip, I’ve got some epic recommendations. These are some of the best weekend trips from Denver that are sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

9. Grand Junction

Distance: about 4 hours and 10 minutes from Denver by car

Being on the far west side of Colorado near Utah, I wasn’t sure what to expect from my road trip to Grand Junction ; however, once we reached the Colorado National Monument , I knew I’d made the right choice.

The monument’s stunning red rock formations and mountains are breathtaking. It’s the perfect spot for camping and hiking. You can click here for Colorado National Monument trail options and maps .

Afterward, exploring the downtown area with its great restaurants and bars is a perfect way to end your trip. Devil’s Kitchen in The Hotel Maverick is one recommendation for delicious contemporary American food with a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains.

Grand Junction is a fabulous weekend trip from Denver if you don’t want to leave the state and want to experience unique scenery.

Distance: about 3 hours and 40 minutes from Denver by car

There are many fun things to do in Aspen , a top ski destination known for its fantastic resorts and amazing conditions.

It’s also famous for its luxury scene, with lavish hotels, upscale shopping, delicious dining, and frequent celebrity visits. 

I recommend walking down Main Street and enjoying the local eateries and shops. I particularly love visiting Four Mountain Sports because they have great ski and snowboarding gear including jackets, helmets, gloves, and more.

For hiking in the area, the Maroon Bells —a series of bell-shaped, red-hued mountains—are a must. Opt for the 1.9-mile Maroon Bells Scenic Loop Trail for breathtaking views.

If you are visiting during the winter season, you can’t miss skiing at any of the four mountains: Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Buttermilk, and Highlands . Each offers diverse terrain and an unforgettable experience.

I’ve skied at 10 resorts throughout Colorado, and Aspen remains one of my top picks for the views, slopes, and amenities.

Ultimately, Aspen is one of the best road trips in Colorado because of the epic mountain vistas and scenic overlooks along the way.

When embarking on the drive from Denver to Aspen, be sure to take Independence Pass , as it’s the most scenic route and has many places to pull over and enjoy the views.

However, it’s important to note that this road closes during the winter due to snowy and icy conditions. During this time, you’ll have to take Roaring Fork Valley . I’ve done both drives and either one is well worth the road trip for a memorable getaway.

11. Telluride

Distance: about 6 hours and 20 minutes from Denver by car

Telluride , a historic silver mining town, is one of my favorite spots in the United States.

What I love most about Telluride is its seclusion. Getting there takes effort, meaning you won’t encounter the crowds you might find in places like Vail, Breckenridge, Denver, or Colorado Springs.

If you’re planning a ski vacation to Colorado and want to avoid crowds, Telluride is a great pick. It features over 2,000 skiable acres, with plenty of slopes catered to all different ski and snowboarding skill levels.

While Telluride shines in winter, it’s also a fantastic year-round destination for hiking, mountain biking, rafting, and fly fishing. You can also ride the Telluride Gondola to Allred’s Restaurant for an upscale meal with stunning views from 10,551 feet!

Beyond outdoor activities, Telluride’s downtown area offers breathtaking mountain views and a charming vibe. Be sure to head to the Historic Bar Telluride in the New Sheridan Hotel , the oldest bar in town and a great local spot with Wild West-themed decor.

Distance: about 3 hours from Denver by car

I enjoy visiting during winter for its great snow, delightful downtown, and fantastic Coloradan ski slopes .

What makes Steamboat Springs unique in winter is its relative remoteness compared to Vail or Breckenridge, resulting in fewer crowds since it’s farther from Denver.

While I particularly enjoy winter visits, Steamboat Springs is fantastic in fall, spring, and summer as well, offering hot springs, hiking , and mountain biking.

If you are looking to enjoy some local hot springs, head to Strawberry Park Hot Springs , which offers a great way to relax and take in the scenery. 

Distance: about 5 hours and 40 minutes from Denver by car

Moab in eastern Utah, near the Colorado border, is renowned for its striking red rock formations and is home to Arches National Park , one of the most stunning and distinctive parks in the United States. 

While spending a weekend exploring the park is a great idea, I also suggest taking advantage of the other outdoor activities outside the park like ATVing, hiking, camping, and much more. 

When you want a break from outdoor adventures, be sure to head to the Historic Moab Main Street where you’ll find shopping, dining, and hotels.

Hungry? Visit the Moab Diner —known for its delicious green chili and taco salad followed by a banana split for dessert.

It’s a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and a must-visit if you’re seeking one of the best weekend road trips from Denver.

If longer road trips are on your agenda, I have some perfect spots in mind. Some of the road trips I’ve enjoyed most from Denver took me a bit farther out of state, and I can assure you that they are all worth the journey.

14. Mount Rushmore

Distance: about 6 hours from Denver by car

My family’s road trip from Denver to Mount Rushmore stands out as our favorite by far.

We embarked on this 3-day road trip from Denver over the 4th of July weekend and had an unforgettable time exploring South Dakota, camping, and enjoying the local hiking trails .

The most popular trail to see the presidential carvings is the Mountain Rushmore and Presidential Trail Loop , which is less than a mile long and the perfect short hike to take in the views.

The highlight is seeing Mount Rushmore in person. The talent of the artists is incredible, and the mountainous landscape surrounding the memorial is breathtaking.

Additionally, the surrounding towns added immensely to the experience. I recommend checking out Deadwood , a walkable town with a charming Old West vibe. The Saloon No. 10 bar will have you transported back in time thanks to the reenactments, decor, and sawdust on the floor.

15. Jackson Hole

Distance: about 8 hours and 20 minutes from Denver by car

If you are looking for the best road trip out of Denver, Jackson Hole holds a special place in my heart as it was my honeymoon spot. It’s still one of my favorite places in the US.

Jackson Hole is cozy and rustic, surrounded by beautiful mountains, and conveniently located near Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks . 

It has a great western vibe with old-fashioned bars and restaurants. The food scene is amazing, offering everything from delicious steakhouses like Gun Barrel Steak & Game House to yummy Italian joints like Glorietta Trattoria . 

Plus, there are many activities like skiing, horseback riding, hiking, and ATVing. If you are visiting during winter, head to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort for their incredible ski slopes.

While there are trails for all ski levels, the resort shines for expert skiers thanks to its advanced terrain like Corbet’s Couloir , an unbelievably steep chute that’s on many bucket lists!

16. Santa Fe

Doing a road trip from Denver to Santa Fe offers a pleasant and scenic drive. Once at your destination, Santa Fe’s charm is truly unique thanks to the city’s adobe architecture, New Mexican flair, artistic atmosphere, and incredible cuisine and drinks.

If you enjoy salsa, enchiladas, burritos, margaritas, and sangria, Santa Fe will capture your heart stomach. Don’t miss the chance to experience these specialties at the delicious La Choza Restaurant .

For one of the most popular viewpoints, visit Mile Marker 251 at Grandview Point . You’ll want to have your camera ready because the views are unreal.

19. Kansas City

Distance: about 9 hours from Denver by car

As a winter sports enthusiast, I highly recommend visiting during the winter to experience resorts like Solitude , Alta, or Snowbird .

However, if you prefer visiting during the fall, spring, or summer, there are plenty of hiking trails , cycling trails , and other outdoor activities to enjoy.

If you are looking for a fun hike just outside of Salt Lake City, the 2.3-mile Lake Mary Trail takes you to Lake Mary for incredible views of the surrounding mountains and forest.

Additionally, Salt Lake City has a professional basketball team, the Utah Jazz, and a hockey team on the rise if you enjoy sports.

As of February, 65% of the Centennial State’s historic and scenic byways are “electrified.”

The Colorado Department of Transportation’s Scenic & Historic Byway Commission announced that 17 of Colorado’s 26 byways have electric charging stations within 100 miles. This effort is part of the Colorado Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap that was designed to help the state meet emissions numbers by making electric vehicles more practical and appealing.

It makes sense to be out and about appreciating nature while also protecting it from harmful fumes and pollution, and these charging stations are part of an eco-friendly initiative for tourists.

A Colorado Electric Byway must either have a dual-port DC fast charging station at least every 100 miles within the start and end of the byway or if the byway is under 100 miles long, the station needs to be available within 15 miles of the start or end of the byway.

In addition, nearby communities are being encouraged to install these charging stations at established places frequented by travelers, such as hotels, restaurants, and even trailheads.

The three newest Colorado Electric Byways are:

The Peak to Peak Highway between Estes Park and Black Hawk. This drive can take about three hours over 55 miles on Highway 7 to Highway 72 and then Highway 119. This mountain drive offers views galore including the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. Along the way, travelers can stop in charming towns with distinct character, including Estes Park, Nederland, Allenspark, Ward, and Black Hawk.

The Mount Blue Sky Road , which despite a recent name change, is still billed as the highest paved road in North America where it tops out at 14,130 feet above sea level. This road is subject to seasonal closures and there are reservations required in summer to minimize impact (go to recreation.gov for fees and details). Along the way, you can visit Mount Goliath Natural Area, a high alpine garden managed by Denver Botanic Gardens. The byway is 28 miles long and very curvy as you ascend over 7,000 feet in elevation, so plan for at least one hour to go one way.

The Gold Belt Tour Byway is also a National Scenic Byway that takes road trippers through 131 miles of former mining camps and towns. Along the way, the road cuts through Cripple Creek, Victor, Florence, and other spots, as well as gives some stunning views of Pikes Peak, Royal Gorge, and Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Check road conditions ahead of time as some stretches will require a 4 x 4 vehicle to safely pass.

The remaining nine byways will also be “electrified” in the coming years.
