All on track as Ireland’s first luxury sleeper train goes on tour

Ireland’s first luxury sleeper train – The Belmond Grand Hibernian – was launched in Dublin this week. With two dining cars, 10 carriages and 20 en-suite cabins all refurbished to the highest standards, the ‘Hibernian’ has brought a new level of luxury to Irish rail tracks.

Its inaugural six-day tour of the country with 40 people on board  pulled out of Heuston Station yesterday. In terms of comfort, the travelling experience was similar to journeying “in an Irish country house,” according to the Irish Independent.

While the company has not signposted prices for the tour, it is estimated that six days on the luxury sleeper costs several thousands of euro. For instance, the price of a two-night itinerary with Grand Hibernian begins at €3160 per person.

Mark Donegan waits for the first customers to arrive to board the Belmond Grand Hibernian.

Four-night tours cost from  €5420 with six-day packages costing around €7722. Belmond says it is aiming for US, UK and European passengers, stressing that it has made hundreds of bookings so far for its Irish journeys.

The company also operates the Belmond Royal Scotsman and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express among other luxury train services. Irish Rail is providing operational support for the luxury sleeper, including haulage and stabling. More than 40 skilled craftsmen were employed at Mivan Marine Ltd. in Belfast to refurbish and fit the Grand Hibernian. Ten of the midnight blue carriages are given names from Irish counties – Carlow, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Kerry, Kildare, Leitrim, Sligo, Waterford and Wexford.

James Park Associates did the interior design to reflect the capital city’s Georgian architecture. There were also influences taken from the country’s rich landscape as well its flora and fauna. The train is 252 metres in length - the longest in Ireland - while the tours covers 2217km.

Guests leave Dublin and travel to Cork, Killarney, Galway, Belfast and Waterford before ending up back in Dublin. Excursions from the train take in Ashford Castle, Titanic Belfast, Blarney Castle, Killarney National Park and the House of Waterford Crystal. Next year Belmond will run from 25 April to 17 October.

Belmond also announced this year it will run the first luxury sleeper train in South America, which will travel one of the highest rail routes on Earth, heading through the Peruvian Andes from Cusco to Lake Titicaca and Arequipa .

Belmond Grand Hibernian: A luxury train journey through Ireland

(Advertisement | Invitation)

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

(Updated, January 2024). Unfortunately the Grand Hibernian journey has been discontinued by Belmond in 2021. Check other Belmond heritage and luxury train trips for similar experiences in other countries. This post is from our train experience with Belmond in Ireland in 2018.

There wasn’t a murder on the train. Actually, quite the opposite was true. We toasted with champagne and Irish Gin made from milk, enjoyed 3-course gala dinners with chanterelle mille feuille and dwelled in long conversations at the bar. And all of this was accompanied by the soft rocking and choo-choo sound of our moving luxury train called the Grand Hibernian .

A luxury train journey through Ireland

The Grand Hibernian train is a luxury train by British company Belmond.

Table of Contents

The origins of luxury train travel

Traveling on a luxury sleeper train has kept it’s appeal since the 1920s, when the Orient Express was the epitome of glamour . British luxury hotel and train company Belmond has slowly built an empire of luxury trains all across the world and the Grand Hibernian has been it’s latest addition in Ireland in 2016. It’s the first of it’s kind in the Emerald State and a truly unique way to discover the destination.

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

From it’s midnight blue coating to it’s splendid interior – the train exudes luxury.

From the 1920’s to the 21st century.

Belmond bought an old 1980s train and carriages and completely refurbished it in 2016 to recreate the atmosphere of a heritage train – yet updated with 21st century amenities. While the Orient Express didn’t (and still doesn’t) have any showers and only one toilet for all the guests on board, the Grand Hibernian has en-suite bathrooms for each cabin with your own private shower, sink and toilet. There’s wifi in the train and a safe in your drawer, enough space to store even large pieces of luggage, it provides bathrobes, slippers and a hair dryer. It’s truly a luxury hotel on wheels.

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

The Grand Hibernian features comfortable cabins with en-suite private bathrooms.

Full-service train.

During my mediterranean cruise I loved having my hotel room with me while traveling (although the ship wasn’t nearly as luxurious as this train). The constant packing and unpacking, checking in and out of hotels can become quite tiring after a while – so getting from one place to another without the hassle of changing hotels is a huge plus of this kind of travel experience. The other being that you don’t have to organise a thing. From the moment you “check in” to the train to the very end of the trip everything is being taken care of.

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

From check-in to brunch and dinner – everything is being taken care of.

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

The chef creates some wonders in the small kitchen aboard the train. Everything is homemade – even the bread!

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

And yes, the bar is open and all the drinks are complimentary. Yay! 🙂

From bus tours and guided experiences.

It’s good to know that the Belmond package comes with a completely and meticulously pre-arranged itinerary . So while on the tour you’ll be on a schedule for most of the time, but Belmond makes sure the schedule is unique and guarantees some experiences you wouldn’t get otherwise.

Curraghmore House in Waterford

A private visit at the Curraghmore House in Waterford was part of the itinerary.

Belmond is known to provide unique and private experiences, which add to the luxury appeal . A tour of a private 11th hundred estate of the Marquess of Waterford gave a glimpse of the life of the Lords and Ladies of Ireland – all including a privately hosted afternoon tea just for our group.

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

After a day of excursions we returned to the train just in time for sunset.

A “taste of ireland”.

Another stop on our journey was a half-day visit of Belfast , which is of course too short to explore a lot of the city. The visit therefore focused on providing background infos and first hand stories from the conflict between Catholics and Protestants and how it still affects the city nowadays. We were brought to suburbs with fences and huge walls and learned a lot about the conflict.

Belmond Grand Hibernian

The 2-night “Taste of Ireland” tour brought us to Belfast in Northern Ireland and Waterford in the South East.

When our guide started showing us the different kinds of bullets that were used to shoot each other during the years of unrest we had a hard time believing that this happened not so long ago. The “Taste of Ireland” tour became quite bitter for a moment.

Belfast

This is all we experienced of Belfast – a city struggling with it’s history.

After the tour of the fenced suburbs we were brought to the Titanic Museum , which is quite interesting and done in a very interactive way. We also got the whole museum to ourselves as we were allowed to visit after the regular opening hours. Again: This is the kind of luxury service, that Belmond is famous for!

The Titanic Museum in Belfast

How to travel the Grand Hibernian

Luckily I had already been to Ireland two years before , so I had the pleasure of seeing the cliffs and rugged coastline , driving around the rolling green hills while loosing count of the sheep all around. If I hadn’t already seen more Ireland before I’m sure I would’ve been sad to not really get a chance to experience more of the unique landscape of the Emerald Isle during the train trip. But then – it’s only a 2-night trip and should only give a “Taste of Ireland” 🙂

So my recommendation would be to do the Grand Hibernian tour as an add-on to a longer Ireland trip. This way you’ll get the best of both worlds!

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

Learn more about the Belmond trains here.

Good to know

There’s a few things I learned on the tour, which are interesting if you think about booking a tour with a Belmond train :

  • While you will need a tuxedo to travel on the original Orient Express, some of the Belmond trains are a little more casual, but still quite elevated. A collared shirt and suspenders or a bowtie will be a perfect fit for dinner.
  • The train will often be “stabled” at night – meaning it will stay overnight in a train station, so you won’t be sleeping on a moving train.
  • You’re not allowed to throw paper in the toilet 🙂
  • Let the team know beforehand if you’re a vegetarian (like us) and they will prepare a special menu for you – as there is no à la carte selection at dinner.
  • A big suitcase will fit under the bed in the twin cabin, so you don’t have to pack too lightly. But cabinet space is limited. There is one full size cabinet with about 10 hangers – so don’t go overboard with your wardrobe.
  • Only for Ireland: Definitely try the selection of Irish Gins served aboard the train – especially the Milk Gin called “Bertha’s Revenge” is worth a try (or more) 🙂

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

Dundalk Station was one of the train stations where we were stabled for the night.

Belmond Grand Hibernian in Ireland

Carla, the bartender, presents “Bertha’s Revenge” – an Irish Gin made from milk!

Disclaimer:  We were invited to the “Taste of Ireland” tour on the Grand Hibernian as a complimentary press trip by Belmond, but our views stay independent from that invitation.

Luxury Train Tours in Ireland

Not only is train travel one of the easiest ways to get around in Ireland, but the views are absolutely incredible and you’ll get a perspective of the land that just isn’t possible by car or on foot.

Information We Need

It’s recommended that everyone experiences an Irish train tour at least once in their lifetime. From the epic coastline of Dublin to the lush countryside seen from Derry to Coleraine, many railway journeys have made history.

Our luxury train tours provide a comfortable and stylish way to explore the Emerald Isle, taking you through the mystical mountains, past glistening lakes and iconic rivers, all with five star food and service on board. A train tour is also a wonderful way to move between major whiskey destinations, delighting your palate with the nation’s finest whisky varieties with all the luxuries you need on board. With multiple stops along the way, you can hop off for insightful distillery tours and tasting experiences before hopping back on, sitting back and enjoying the views until your next destination.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure winding through the Irish landscape and discovering the loughs and legends that make this isle in the North Atlantic so great.

Seeing Ireland by train

If you’re interested in seeing Ireland by train, there are so many routes to explore. Some of Ireland’s classic train journeys are Londonderry to Coleraine with access to the Causeway Coastal Route and Giant’s Causeway, Downpatrick to Inch Abbey on a fabulous vintage trail, Cobh to Cork with sweeping views over the Belvelley channel, and of course the famous route along Dublin and the east coast on the Belmond Grand Hibernian .

The Belmond Grand Hibernian is one of the most luxurious train tour experiences, featuring refined restaurant cars serving up the best of Ireland’s artisan cuisine and creature comforts to make your journey relaxing and enjoyable. This train journey rolls by a pretty patchwork of soft greens, and offers passengers access to some of the best attractions. These include Blarney Castle in County Cork to Titanic Belfast.

You can also enjoy a whiskey tour in the chic and cosmopolitan city of Galway, a cultural gem that attracts the most discerning travelers to its center. Although Dublin is more famous, Galway has always held the crown of being the cultural capital of Ireland. Not only is it home to the Galway Whiskey Trail, but it’s a foodie paradise, with a mix of fine dining and Michelin star restaurants as well as some more laidback venues.

Aboard the Belmond Grand Hibernian, Ireland’s most exclusive luxury train, there are double, twin and interconnecting cabins available for couples or families. It’s also available for private charter if you’re looking for a more intimate dining and wine and whiskey tasting experience with your group. You can choose from 2, 4 or 6 night journeys, and there are a number of routes to choose from. The ‘Grand Tour of Ireland’ goes southbound through dramatic landscapes to explore regal castles and captivating towns. The ‘Legends and Loughs’ experience takes you from Dublin to Cork, Calway and Westport for a gourmet discovery and plenty of history. And the ‘Taste of Ireland’ goes up the east coast to beautiful Belfast with breathtaking views and a sumptuous afternoon tea.

Wine onboard is excellent, with a carefully curated menu of fine wines and specialty local wines, and the table d'hôte food service will give you a perfect crash course on Irish gastronomy.

What to see and do in Ireland

Some of the best destinations to explore by train include Dublin, Cork, Calway, Westport, Waterford, Kilkenny and Belfast. Dublin is a popular starting point for many visitors and the city is a great spot for whiskey tours or even wine tasting. Home to Dublin Castle and many other top attractions, it’s a great base for your Irish holiday. With a number of Michelin star restaurants as well as a whole host of fine dining spots to uncover during your time here, Dublin is a foodie heaven.

If you stop off in Cork, take a guided walking tour along the river and visit the world famous Jameson Distillery. Whiskey fans will also fall in love with Belfast and the north coast area, where there are historic distilleries such as Bushmills.

Best time to go

There is simply no good or bad time to enjoy a train adventure in Ireland. The summer lends itself to great weather and longer hours of sunshine, but rainy springtime promises lush greenery and flowers in full bloom. While autumn weather can be a little chillier, the gorgeous golden hues of the landscape will win over hearts.

The summer tends to be very busy as many of Ireland’s top towns are popular tourist destinations. To avoid the summer rush, travel in April, May and June, or the backend of summer as well as September and October.

Bear in mind that the Belmond Grand Hibernian train runs from April to October, so winter travel on this particular train isn’t possible.

Wine Paths is passionate about creating unforgettable food and gastronomy holidays for clients, and Ireland is one of the destinations we specialize in. Find out more about exploring the Emerald Isle on a luxury train, or let us help you design a bespoke trip with whiskey tasting, distillery tours and more.

Where Legends Come to Life

luxury train tour ireland

Poet William Drennan was the first to refer to Ireland as the Emerald Isle, an homage to the country’s stunning green landscape. In the centuries since, poets, photographers, filmmakers, and playwrights have drawn inspiration from the spirited people and dramatic scenery. It would take all of their talents combined to capture the essence of a small but proud island. Now, that island is yours to explore with  Ker & Downey’s  Ireland luxury travel and private tours of Ireland.

History and Natural Beauty

Separated from the United Kingdom by the Irish Sea, the Republic of Ireland flaunts its independence and deep history proudly. The region is a fairytale landscape of undulating green pastures, shimmering lochs, and ancient castles. This history and natural beauty of the country are intertwined and inseparable. Only private tours of Ireland can ensure you appreciate the most of each. As you stand on a seaside cliff overlooking an ancient castle and its mossy church yard, you’ll undoubtedly feel a wistful wonder calling you to stand a little longer in your personal reverie.

Celtic Heritage

Ireland’s Celtic heritage imbues it with an air of mystery and melancholy. Indeed, those tracing their family history will feel an instant connection to the land that imprinted itself on the hearts of its native sons as they dispersed across the Atlantic. Whether you are searching for your own roots, or exploring a new world, Ireland’s charms know no bounds.

Villages and Cities

On the west coast, discover tiny villages once stalked by Vikings and visited by Columbus. Then scale legendary cliffs traversed since antiquity. In the capital of Dublin, balance the modern with the ancient in one of the most visited cities in Europe.

Ireland Luxury Travel with Ker & Downey

Ireland is a country warmed by hospitality, with its citizens always looking for a reason to celebrate over a pint or at one of several annual festivals. Experience the best of Ireland luxury travel with Ker & Downey’s guided tours of Ireland. Contact us today to start planning.
