8+ Travel Variety Shows To Watch So You Can Travel Vicariously

8+ Travel Variety Shows To Watch So You Can Travel Vicariously

If you’re living in a country that’s undergoing some sort of border lock down or even being told to plant yourselves at home and social distance yourself from everyone (which at this point is a whole chunk of countries), then you might be experiencing some signs of cabin fever.

Being stuck at home staring at the same walls, looking at the same view from the same small window can be pretty draining, so it’s only natural for us to crave some wide open spaces. And what better way to experience them (without you know,  actually experiencing them) then by watching some travel variety shows. They’ll provide you with some sweet escape, showing you gorgeous expansive scenery, exciting discoveries, and loads of healing!

So here are some travel variety shows you can tee up and travel vicariously through: (and in the meantime, if you still need to beat the boredom, be sure to check out this quiz ).

“Over Flowers” series

Between “Grandpas Over Flowers” and it’s two spin-offs “Nunas Over Flowers” and “Youth Over Flowers,” there are 11 seasons with nearly 80 episodes to consume. Each series has its own special appeal, whether it’s the adorable and relaxed nature of the grandpas, the beauty and grace of the nunas, or the adventurous spirit of the youths. And while the two former series have younger “porters” acting as tour guides and to help take care of the (relatively) older castmates, the “youth” series is known for “kidnapping” its cast and notifying them of their trip only hours beforehand as a way to force them to travel light and within budget. The casts go around and enjoy the culture and cuisine offered in the destination countries, and the scenic shots done by the “Over Flowers” crew are always especially breathtaking, doing justice to the beauty found in countries such as Iceland, Austria, Africa, and Eastern Europe.

Watch the cast of “ Reply 1988 ” traipse across the deserts of Africa:

BTS ’s Bon Voyage

Even casual fans will be delighted with BTS ‘s very own travel-themed content, aptly titled “Bon Voyage.” There are four seasons so far, with the boys having visited Northern Europe, Hawaii, Malta, and in the most recent voyage, New Zealand. There are eight episodes in each season and each episode is around 30 minutes to an hour, so they’re perfect for a mini-binge. You’ll get to see the boys be their au naturel selves, enjoying a time of fun, adventure, and healing, all set against the beautiful backdrop of whichever city they are in.

Watch a teaser for “Bon Voyage” Season 4 here:

Battle Trip

“Battle Trip,” as the name suggests, is a variety show that pits two sets of guests against each other as they try to win the studio audiences’ hearts with their travel itinerary (though this concept was later revamped in the final few episodes, right before its recent cancellation in March). The show has sent guests nearly everywhere, from local destinations in South Korea to popular tourist hotspots like Japan and Hawaii, and also less traveled countries such as Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. With 176 episodes under its belt, featuring a multitude of guests, there’s sure to be something that’ll tickle your fancy.

Watch “Battle Trip” below:

One Fine Day

If you’re someone who enjoys watching idols get a well deserved break, then be sure to check out “One Fine Day.” A whole shebang of idol groups have been on this series, including B1A4, VIXX , Girl’s Day, SHINee , Super Junior , B.A.P,  GFRIEND , and so on. Out of all the groups, SEVENTEEN is the only one to star twice in the series (and being the final entry as of 2017). Much to their surprise (and to our hilarious enjoyment), their first outing with the show was very unlike their predecessors, where the groups would usually be allowed to kick back, relax, and fully enjoy themselves in various tourist destinations.

Instead,  SEVENTEEN ’s first edition had the hidden sub-header of “13 Castaways,” where the then newly debuted boys were stranded on an island village with only a handful of belongings, and were left to forage and feed themselves. The production team does make it up to them by sending them off to Japan the following year for an actual healing trip that is more thematically in line with the “One Fine Day” series, but the “13 Castaways” edition is one that will be sure to entertain even the non-fans.

Watch a teaser for SEVENTEEN’s 13 Castaway edition below:

2 Days & 1 Night

“2 Days & 1 Night” is the go-to travel variety show in South Korea, and boasts of being one that has been around the longest (since 2007!). It is now currently on its fourth season, with veteran Kim Jong Min still hanging around to amuse us with his silly antics. The show mostly travels around South Korea (though they do have a few overseas specials) and introduces viewers to the many beautiful locales and famous foods that might otherwise fly under the radar, while also entertaining us with their passion for missions and in-fighting.

Watch a teaser for the first episode of Season 4:

Catch the latest episode below:

Carefree Travelers

“Carefree Travelers” really leans into the travel concept by having the cast members (and guests) join package tours and experience things like a regular tourist. Though each cast members are from different fields, their personalities gel wonderfully together, creating a fun chemistry and brotherhood. The other travelers on the tour also brings an extra layer of charm to the show. With “Carefree Travelers,” you get to experience the excitement of travelling and discovery while also enjoying the more quiet and intimate moments of human bonding. It’s been off the air since early 2019, but between the two seasons available, there’s over 100 episodes for you to enjoy.

Watch a teaser featuring the cast members going white water rafting:

Begin Again

If you’re one who really wants to just unwind and relax while watching a low-key travel variety show, then “Begin Again” is right up your alley! It not only features gorgeous scenic shots from places such as Ireland, Switzerland, Italy, and Budapest, but you’ll also get to fully immerse yourself in the beautiful voices of talents such as Lee So Ra , AKMU’s Lee Soo Hyun, Paul Kim, Lee Juck, and Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon . This is a show that brings talented singers and musicians to gorgeous locations and hold busking events for the locals. Both your eyes and ears will be rejuvenated after watching this show, and you can practically feel your stress melting away. There are three seasons so far, with each season featuring a different set of artists.

Watch Lee Soo Hyun singing “Because I Love You”:

“Traveler” is one of the newer travel variety shows on this list, having aired season one in early 2019, with actors Ryu Jun Yeol and Lee Je Hoon as the cast members, whereas season two with Ahn Jae Hong , Kang Ha Neul , and Ong Seong Wu only just started airing this February. The show focuses on the charm of backpacking, and allows the cast members to have free reign over their travel agendas. The first season traveled to Cuba and explored their history and culture, whereas season two is currently enjoying the beauties of Argentina.

Korean Variety Shows with Travel Themes

Call me a late bloomer, but it was only a few years ago when I started binge-watching Korean TV shows, K-dramas included, with a preference on variety shows with travel themes. It may be many years too late, as I’m no longer in an industry where I get to see them in person whenever they visit the country. But working at home and the rise of entertainment apps have made me a fan of Korean variety shows.

I have listed the shows I watch and those that are still on queue for some marathon watching. What made these shows interesting is that they visit wonderful places and they put a twist on how to make the experience engaging to viewers, not just a documentary-type of presentation. Some of these shows have ended their seasons (I’m looking forward to new seasons if there will be any in the future), but they are still available online through streaming sites and apps.

2 Days 1 Night

This is my favorite show to date. It began in August 2007 and is now on its 4th season with members are Yeon Jung-hoon, Kim Jongmin, Moon Seyoon, Kim Seonho, DinDin and VIXX’s Ravi. The longest-staying member is Kim Jongmin who has been around since Season 1. Although season 3 — composed of Kim Junho, Cha Taehyun, Defconn, Kim Jongmin, Yoon Siyoon (Donggu) and Jung Joonyoung, with Lee Yongjin as an intern — ended abruptly because of a member’s scandal, it is still my favorite season, and the longest one, so far. The show 1박 2일 or 2 Days 1 Night takes on the “Real Wild Road Variety” approach in its program, traveling around Korea, showing its sights, history and food through a fun adventure filled with games and challenges. The show was recently given the Presidential Commendation by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism. The show made history when it climbed Mount Paektu in Season 1 and visited the DMZ in Season 3.

Battle Trip

Celebrities compete by going to places in South Korea and abroad, featuring attractions, food and activities in their respective destination. Budget is also considered. The former format had the audience vote for their preferred trip. In special episodes, guests or MCs act as judges. But with the change in the program format, there is no longer an audience that can vote on a particular trip. Some celebrities travel in pairs in the same location but with different itinerary and they compare which one has a better itinerary.

Salty Tour/Thrifter’s Guide to Luxurious Travels

Two or three of the cast members or invited guest compete on which one was the best tour guide for the trip. Current cast members are Park Myungsoo, Han Hyejin, Lee Yongjin, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, Kim Junho. The tour guides, usually one of the members or a guest, have to stick to the budget and the criteria for the trip. The former format was that the winning guides enjoy a luxury of their choice in the given destination. But as it did a reformat after a major change in members’ line-up, the luxury now is given when they are able to accomplish a hard task or activity set by the staff. As the primary purpose is to stay within budget, members usually commute or walk from one destination to another, really my kind of traveling.

Guided Adventure/Carefree Travellers/Around the World Travel Package

The show has already finished season 2. Guests join cast members are Park Joonhyung, Eun Jiwon, and Sunghoon as they visit a place through a package tour. Members and guests individually rate based on their experience. It’s a good way to know the place and try activities based on the tour packages that they avail. They are often joined by other travellers that take part in the tour.

Borrow Trouble

The season 2 of this travel variety show ended in 2018 wherein the cast of Park Joonhyung, Eunhyuk, Sandara Park, JR of NU’EST, and Dindin travelled to Switzerland and made money by selling Korean products in markets. They also did other activities to earn as well as see the many attractions in the country.

The season 1 of this docu-variety show featured actors Ryu JunYeol and Lee JeHoon backpacking in Cuba. They did everything from arranging their transportation, accommodation and itinerary. Their purpose was to find their true self, so they will narrate their experience, from what they see, feel and perceive. Season 2 is composed of Ahn Jaehong, Kang Haneul and Ong Seongwu traveling to Argentina. They showed activities to do and places to visit in a particular city or destination, including their encounters with the locals.

Running Man

It has an “urban action variety” feel wherein the cast members Yoo Jaesuk, Kim Jongkook, Haha, Lee Kwangsoo, Ji Sukjin, Song Jihyo, Jeon Somin and Yang Sechan and guests participate in a mission. Episodes are held at a certain landmark and are often shot on locations abroad. Winners get a reward or are exempted from punishment. But the way they do the activities can have you laughing. So, get ready to have your tummy ache from so much laughter while enjoying the show’s setting whichever location it is shot.

Grandpas over Flowers

Unlike other shows, this travel TV show features veteran actors, some of them in their 70s. They go on trips abroad and feature the various attractions of the places while the members inject their stories and humor. The last run of the show had Lee Soonjae, Shin Goo, Park Guenhyung Baek Ilseob, Lee Seojin, and Kim Yonggun as its members. They feature attractions that may be of interest to viewers, particularly those in their ripe age.

New Journey to the West

With Na Youngseok as director, who was the director of 1박 2일 season 1, New Journey to the West Season 1 reunited Kang Hodong, Lee Soogeun, Eun Jiwon and Lee Seunggi of 1박 2일 season 1. The last episode of New Journey to the West was already in season 7 with members Kang Ho-dong, Lee Soogeun, Eun Jiwon, Song Mino, P.O, and returning member Kyuhyun of Super Junior. Actor Ahn Jaehyun who saw action from season 3 to 6 was on leave and is expected to return in the succeeding season. Each season has a theme and the members dress according to their character while traveling in the country-destination, playing games and winning missions.

Trans-Siberian Pathfinders

Actors Lee Sunkyun, Kim Namgil, Lee Sangyeob, Kim Minsik and Ko Gyupil traveled across Russia by taking the Trans-Siberian Railway. It often shows the sights outside but most of the scenes were taken inside the train. One might wonder what to show while spending most of the time indoors, but the cast made it interesting, even giving hints as what one can do while cooped inside a moving vehicle for hours.

There are more Korean variety shows that have travel as one of their main themes. I have watched Street Food Fighter featuring Chef Baek Jongwon, Exciting India featuring K-pop stars, and other TV programs that brought me around Korea and beyond. Some of them, including those in the list above, are no longer airing but they can still be viewed online. There were episodes that have inspired me to visit a particular destination and landmark or put something in my must-visit or must-do list. I also picked certain travel tips along the way.

As a bonus, enjoy this music video set in Jeju Island and let the soothing voice of EXO Xiumin fill your longing for Korea.

I’m more on watching Korean dramas rather than their variety shows. But I once watched one episode of Running Man and it’s true that how they did the activity or challenge is really funny and entertaining. Hence, either K-Drama or K-Variety shows, they have beautiful places and culture I wish to visit one day.

5 Korean Travel Variety Shows You Can Watch To Go On A Virtual Vacation

Don’t go stir crazy just yet, because these five reality shows will effectively cure your wanderlust by making you travel the world…virtually.

While the world still works on flattening the curve of the pandemic, the side effects of confining ourselves to our homes are felt on an intense magnitude.

Quarantine helps keep everyone safe until a cure is discovered, but it doesn’t come without waves of boredom. If you suddenly feel the strong urge to pack your suitcase and travel the world or head to a  Idaho resort , we can totally relate. However, until the situation permits it, our travel plans will have to be shelved for the meantime.

Now, before you start sulking about it in a corner, we’ve compiled five of the best reality shows that will help you travel from the comfort of your home. It may not be your dream vacation to Paris or Seoul, but until we’re out of the woods, this is the next best thing.

Get your virtual passport ready, and pack your best digital summer dresses, because these reality shows are taking you on a virtual vacation! (Who knows, these might even inspire you for your next holiday destination.)

1. 2 Days 1 Night

Starring Kim Jong Min, Yeon Jung Hoon, Moon Se Yoon, Kim Seon Ho, DinDin, and Ravi, this long-running reality show is definitely one for the books. It’s longevity and all-star cast alone prove how much of a firework this travel program truly is.

The series features the cast members as they traverse the beauty of South Korea. Aside from the breathtaking scenery from the trips, 2 Days 1 Night habitually throws funny challenges and missions for the members to complete, which always have corresponding prizes and consequences.

There’s nothing quite like watching celebrities take on hilariously arduous tasks for your entertainment. Say it with us now: Two Days…One Night!

2. Traveler

Traveler

Season 1 of Traveler featured Ryu Jun Yeol and Lee Je Hoon. It followed their travel escapades in the Caribbean tropics of Cuba, which is famous for its distinctive music and rhythm.

Season 2 invites you to follow the adventures of Ong Seong Wu, Ahn Jae Hong, and Kang Ha Neul. Here, they immerse themselves in the wonders of beautiful Argentina, also known as The Country Frozen In Time.

Aside from generating a bunch of laughs, Traveler  is geared towards traversing the multi-faceted culture, history, and cuisines of the countries they visit. The local interactions are always a great way to pick up a nugget of knowledge as your takeaway. Are you ready for some in-depth exploration of these enriching cultures?

3. Bon Voyage

BTS Bon Voyage

Tag along with Bangtan Sonyeondan as they travel to the far flung corners of the world in Bon Voyage . Get ready to laugh and shake your head at their triumphs and epic fails as the boy group is faced with challenges to find their way in foreign lands.

One of the most exhilarating highlights would have to be when they rode the daunting Nevis swing and catapult in New Zealand. The most laughable moments would include the times when the boys struggled to navigate to their hotels, got on the wrong bus in Norway, nearly lost their suitcases, and grappled to communicate with the locals in Malta.

Additionally, BTS served up some heartwarming moments as well; like when Jin befriended a local, or when V gave stickers to children at a fastfood chain.

If you appreciate the ineffable beauty of Europe, the serene landscapes of New Zealand, and the language barrier misadventures of BTS, Bon Voyage will be your new best friend. The show illustrates BTS like you’ve never seen them before.

With uncharted waters full of adventure, Bon Voyage gives them a platform to overcome fears and explore the world. No stage, no makeup, no cheering fans, no performances; just the boys, random challenges, a foreign country, and a map. What could possibly go wrong?

4. GFRIEND Memoria

GFRIEND Memoria

Dive into the colorful and quirky world of GFRIEND’s reality program, GFRIEND Memoria. Yerin, Sinb, Yuju, Sowon, Umji, and Eunha recently launched their own travel show on the social media platform, Weverse.

The ensemble of six takes their fans on virtual adventures as they tour around South Korea and rise to the occasion to complete their missions. The travel program shines the spotlight on the girls as they stumble into the most hysterically funny situations with spectacular vacation spots as their backdrop.

Viewers may be used to seeing the K-pop stars all dolled up and ready to take the stage. But this series depicts them in low-key environments that challenge them in both unnerving and comical ways. Prepare yourself for a healthy dose of playful antics, friendly competition, and strong teamwork that will make you love GFRIEND even more.

5. Begin Again

Begin Again

Feed your soul with picturesque scenery and poignant music in Begin Again . In contrast to the funny, energetic, and bustling themes of most travel programs, Begin Again  is a soft and relaxing breeze by the sunset.

The reality show features the melodious voices of Lee Juck, Paul Kim, Lee So Ra, Girls’ Generations’ Taeyeon, and AKMU’s Lee Soo Hyun while they go on full fledged busking sessions in Europe.

Follow these K-pop artists on their journey to some of the world’s most captivating countries, such as Switzerland, Hungary, Italy, and Ireland. Kick your feet up and immerse yourself in soul-stirring cityscapes, country landscapes, and panoramas while these seasoned performers serenade you with heartwarming music.

Better start streaming this show if you’re in the mood to fall in love with Europe’s romantic vista paired with mellifluous music. Begin Again is a masterpiece that effectively conveys the universal language of music and cultural beauty.

While you embark on your virtual vacation, we wish you safe travels!
