We throughly enjoyed our 1/2 day of kayaking along the beautiful red cliffs of Lake Superior at Bay Field. These guys are a class act. From booking to actual paddling, everything went smooth. Our guides were amazing. Their focus on safety was non-stop, and their knowledge of the Lake and its geological features is impressive. I fully intend on doing another outstanding experience.

Our guide Michael was knowledgeable in kayaking, cave formation, and Lake Superior history. His enthusiasm made for a very enjoyable day.  We are definitely coming back next year!

Sea kayak tour in apostle islands.

Must be at least 100 lbs. and no more than 265 lbs. to properly fit in the kayaks and the gear that we use at Meyers Beach. People ages 5+ can ride in the middle hatch of a tandem kayak.

• This is the section of caves that became famous as the ice caves, they are absolutely incredible.
• It is a one-mile paddle from Meyers Beach to the first cave. A two-hour trip is four miles round trip.
• 2 and 4 hour Options Available! Triples Available!
• 4 hour tour: 4 to 6 people minimum

2-Hour Tours: 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 5 p.m.

Sea Caves can be found at the following locations and are listed from most impressive to least; Devil’s Island, Sand Island, Meyers Beach, Red Cliff, Stockton Island, Outer Island, Ironwood Island, Cat Island, Bear Island, Romans Point, and Madeline Island.

Sand Island Sea Cave Tour

Meyers Beach may have better caves but book a kayaking tours in Sand Island and get away from the crowds!

Looking for the best kayak tour?   Take the Big Bay Water Trail from the Town park to the caves and cliffs at the State Park. The boardwalk between the south end of the Lagoon and Lake Superior was  finished in August 2018 (picture on the right). We proposed the boardwalk to the DNR in 2013.

Here's what we do:

We begin at the Town Park with a bit of expert paddling instruction. The peaceful Lagoon is the perfect place to start a kayak tour. It is  almost always calm with little or no wind which means we can practice our kayaking skills while enjoying the incredible beauty of the wetlands surrounding us - birds, flowers, little islands, turtles and other surprises. The Big Bay Lagoon is a part of Big Bay that you don't want to miss.

After kayaking down the Lagoon we land at the boardwalk and take the short portage over the forested sand spit to one of the most magnificent beaches on Lake Superior. It's time for lunch and a swim! We then kayak past the State Park beach to the rocks, caves and cliffs of the Big Lake (the biggest in the world!). After visiting a few caves (Ed is always taking pictures to send to you later), we stop for some cliff jumping - always a favorite activity for kids (big kids too). We then kayak directly to the Town Park staying on Lake Superior within view of the magnificent three mile long sandy beach (see picture map inset). We put the kayaks back on the rack and take our final group picture, refreshed and thankful for the beauty of nature that we have experienced.

   DAILY KAYAK TOURS

CHECK IN WITH US at our downtown location across from Joni's Beach by 10.30 a.m. WE LEAVE FROM DOWNTOWN at 10.45 and drive to the Town Park. We return to the Town Park between 3 and 4.

TRANSPORTATION to and from the Town Park is available by arangement (contact us before you arrive!)  or we can meet you at the Town Park.

BUT  LET US KNOW   when you arrive on Madeline. We need to know you are here and where you are going to meet us!

This Underrated Midwest Farm Town Is Known As 'America's Little Switzerland'

Switzerland is a world-class travel destination full of charming little towns, breathtaking natural beauty, and plenty of hiking trails. However, no matter how much most of us would love to explore Switzerland, it's not always possible to spend all the money and time needed to travel to and explore the country known as the Playground of Europe. Plus, as it turns out, some famous cities in Switzerland may not be worth the trip, as according to guidebook author, Rick Steves, Geneva is wildly overrated . Luckily, there is a way you can experience a small part of Swiss culture and architecture while never leaving America — and that is by visiting New Glarus, the town known as "America's Little Switzerland."

Located in the rolling hills of Southern Wisconsin, New Glarus is an idyllic farming town that was originally settled by 108 Swiss immigrants in 1845 who came from the Swiss state of Glarus. After the first Swiss immigrants settled in Wisconsin and created New Glarus, the town began to attract more Swiss settlers and the people (mostly being of the same heritage) created what was essentially a mini-Switzerland complete with traditional architecture, food, and festivals. This can be seen as soon as you arrive in downtown New Glarus and are greeted with German street signs (and their English translations) as well as Swiss flags hanging from chalet-style buildings.

How to get the most out of your trip to New Glarus

To get the best experience out of your trip to New Glarus, it is important to enjoy as much of the town's Swiss culture as possible. You can do this by starting out your day by buying some old-fashioned donuts or Bavarian rye bread from the New Glarus Bakery, and then munch on your breakfast as you walk through downtown and admire the traditional brown-and-white buildings of First Street that are filled with small businesses and shops. While you are walking you can also try and spot all 15 of the life-sized painted cow sculptures that decorate the downtown area and were all imported from Switzerland.

When you are done exploring, take the time to enjoy Swiss-German food at Glarner Stube (also located on First Street) before heading to the Swiss Historical Village and Museum to learn more about the first settlers of New Glarus and the cultural legacy of the town. If you are up for a more active afternoon, you can hike through the New Glarus Woods State Park, cycle along the Sugar River Bike Trail, or enjoy a self-guided tour and beer tasting at the expansive grounds of New Glarus Brewing Co. (The producers of famous beers like Spotted Cow and Moon Man which are only available in Wisconsin.) When evening comes and it's time for dinner you can head to one of the town's traditional taverns.

Where to stay in New Glarus

As a town that receives thousands of visitors every year — including some travelers from Switzerland — there are plenty of hotels in and around New Glarus including chains like Holiday Inn and Marriott (which are both located in the nearby town of Verona). However, if you want to experience the local culture with your stay you can consider booking a room at the Chalet Landhaus which is in a traditional brown-and-white Swiss-style building complete with a restaurant serving Swiss delicacies. Or you can choose to stay at the more modern Blanc Chalet which is only a short walk from New Glarus' downtown.

Nature lovers will adore hiking or biking on the Ice Age Trail which is an over-1,000-mile trail that runs near New Glarus and twists and winds its way across the entire width of Wisconsin running along the lines of an ancient glacier.
