Zicasso's tour partner was a true professional. Even in this time of post-Covid, White Lotus tourism demand in Italy, she constructed a perfect 14-day, eight-city tour. If you work with her, get an idea of what you envision and then put the planning in her hands. Do not let the advice of friends or guide books overrule this. The "road book" you will receive will detail your experience, but you will begin to realize the expertise she brings to this as you live it, and I have told her so. The drivers and guides were spot-on; some were exceptional, all were very pleasant. You learn as you chat that the agency demands the best. It’s not inexpensive, but as I began to notice not one available parking space in some cities for days, I knew this was the right way to travel, even in this tourist-friendly place. The cooking class in Taormina, which I feared would be touristy, was an entertaining group experience. Oh, this is a little embarrassing as we are very well traveled, but the lady who whisks you through Fiumicino airport in Rome, acquiring a VAT refund and all, was a saint. All together, well done.

Zicasso’s travel company was outstanding. I highly recommend our travel agent. She listened to our ideas and provided good ones of her own based on her wealth of experience living and traveling in Italy. Every tour she planned was educational and enjoyable. The drivers she reserved for us were safe and drove comfortable cars. We especially appreciated having the train and tour tickets all purchased ahead of time and the car rental and hotels prepaid. Our agent even checked us in ahead of time for the one train that required check-in. She also found perfect, well-run hotels and inns for us, located within five to 10 minutes of restaurants. We would use our agent again in a heartbeat.

Our trip was extremely well organized and all the tour guides did a wonderful job. We loved the hotel in Syracuse and Taormina was stunning. We are sorry we did not take the tour of Mount Etna. We enjoyed the cooking class, but have not received the info promised from the class. Our driver was extremely professional and pleasant, and her driving skills were perfect. We did not enjoy Palermo. I guess we should have done more research as I thought Palermo was going to be like Rome. We did not like the staff at the hotel in Palermo. They had a totally different attitude to those in the previous two cities. The food was very good and breakfast at the first two hotels was amazing. My husband played gold in all three cities and enjoyed it. Thank you for all your assistance. We will definitely reach out to Zicasso in the future.

This was a bucket-list trip for me and the Zicasso travel company truly took it over the top. They were responsive to my many questions and handled any hiccups with ease (like me misreading an email to be a certain amount total instead of per person). When we discussed dates, they made recommendations to ensure we could pack in as much as possible without being affected by free museum days. While on the trip, we experienced train delays and they made sure we were settled in getting on the right train and that the hotel was ready for our late check-in. The communication was seamless, the activities were perfect, the hotels were beautiful and didn't feel like a chain, and the food recommendations were divine. I cannot praise them enough. They will be my first call when we return to Italy and I have told everybody how wonderful the company is.

The Zicasso tour company did a nice job planning out the trip and had a person available on WhatsApp until 7pm each day if there were any questions. They were responsive and handled things. There was a little bit of confusion with the guides about what was included and already paid for on a particular day tour, but it was cleared up when we contacted the agency. It happened a few times, so I am not sure if it was a mistake on the driver's or the agency’s part. When it comes to flights, I understand that erring on the side of caution is good, but having us get to the airport three hours early was overkill. At Inverness airport, they wouldn't even let us check in at Logan Air until two hours before the flight. When we flew out of Shannon at the end, we insisted they change the pick-up for the airport so we would get there two hours beforehand, which was plenty of time. I don't fault the company for this, but it may be good for them to consider not having their clients arrive too early at the airports unless the clients prefer that. All that being said, I would use this travel agency again and appreciated the itinerary they put together, the friendly guides for our daily excursions, and their responsiveness when we reached out to them.

I can’t begin to express how grateful I am to Zicasso’s travel agent and her company. I began the process of planning this trip over a year ago. She walked me through every step and was very patient with me as I changed the itinerary. We had two pre-departure meetings, which were very helpful. Our agent had every detail well planned out and basically organized a dream vacation for my mom and me. It was all well balanced between the touristy sights, off-the-beaten-path experiences, and having time getting lost in the streets. Italy is home to incredible food (give me all the gnocchi and wine), rolling green hills, cultivated vineyards, stunning lakes and mountains, a long rich history dating back thousands of years, and a welcoming culture.

It is one of the most dynamic countries in the world and will live up to all the hype you’ve heard. It’s composed of 20 different regions, each with its own unique culture, cuisine, wine, and landscape. Italy is basically a confederation of different regional “countries and cultures.”

Because there’s so much to see and do in Italy (and not everyone has a lot of time), many travelers decide to take tours when they visit Italy.

I’ve visited Italy on my own and with tour companies.

And there are A LOT of tour companies in Italy. (Like way, way, way too many.)

It can be very overwhelming deciding which Italy tour company to pick. I know — I’ve spent hours upon hours researching them all!

To help you plan your trip and really get beneath the surface of this amazing destination, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite tour companies in Italy.

Whether you’re looking for a basic walking tour or a multi-week excursion, these companies are the ones I think offer travelers the best experience at the right price.

Here are the best tour companies in Italy:

1. Walks of Italy

If you’re looking for something a little more in-depth than a free tour, my favorite walking tour company in Italy is Walks. They are one of the largest day tour companies in Italy and offer tours in eight cities across the country.

What makes them so special is that they get access to places other companies don’t, including before- or after-hours visits to some of the most popular sites in Italy (such as an early-access tour of the Sistine Chapel before it opens or a Colosseum at Night Tour , where you’ll see where get to experience the arena after it closes).

They are true experts and I love their tours. They are my favorite tour company in Italy. Most tours last around four hours and start at around 40 EUR per person.

2. Tours by Foot

For free walking tours in cities around Italy, check out Tours by Foot. They organize tours (or collaborate with companies that run tours) in Rome, Florence, Milan, Sorrento, Naples, and Venice. You’ll be able to get a solid overview of each iconic city thanks to knowledgeable local guides. These free tours are 2-3 hours long, making them a great introduction to each destination. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!

If you prefer to go at your own pace, they also highlight companies that offer self-guided audio tours and guides.

Devour is one of the most highly rated food tour companies in Italy. They’ve been featured in The Guardian, CNN Travel, Forbes, and many other popular publications. In short, they’re a perfect choice for anyone looking to really dig in and learn about Italy’s world-famous food cuisine.

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. Some of my favorite places to stay are:

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. The transfers to and from the airport were on time and the driver was so accommodating (he gave a tour and stopped at a location for perfect pictures on the way to our hotel). The Hotel was absolutely beautiful! Our suite was fantastic and the hotel staff were extremely attentive. Finally, our Scavi Tour was unbelievable - truly a once in a lifetime experience

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

SINGAPORE: With the increase in Malaysia's diesel prices, coach passengers and tour agency customers travelling across the border can expect prices to increase soon.

On Monday (Jun 10), the Malaysian government cut most of its diesel subsidies, which it said was costing the country RM4 billion (US$853 million) annually. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said the savings will be redirected to lower-income groups.

The retail price of diesel in Peninsular Malaysia has been set at RM3.35 a litre, an increase of more than 50 per cent from the previous subsidised price of RM2.15 for commercial and private vehicles.

PASSING ON COSTS

Singapore Cab Booking, which offers transportation services between the two countries, said its bus services will be hit by the diesel price increase.

"We have the Singapore-KL overland transfer. With the 50 per cent increase in diesel prices, the price is almost equal to Singapore's diesel price," said CEO Farid Khan, adding that the company also has to pay toll charges. 

He has 12 45-seater coaches in his fleet and other smaller buses that also use diesel. He also works with some Malaysian vendors, and they have already requested to increase their prices. 

"With this increase in the price of diesel, when we want to increase our prices to our customers, that's a problem. They will make noise, not happy the price is going up," said Mr Khan.

Many agreements, especially for customers travelling in big groups, were signed and prices fixed months in advance, said Mr Khan, who added that he would make a loss in some cases. 

The overall increase in costs will cut into his profit margins by about 20 to 30 per cent. He is currently in negotiations with his vendors about their higher asking prices. 

He intends to increase his prices by at least 20 per cent over the next few months for new packages or agreements. For example, he currently charges S$550 (US$406) for a one-way coach trip to Legoland in Malaysia. But with higher diesel prices and the newly implemented vehicle entry permit system , he plans to increase this to about S$650. 

"Corporate customers ... they plan their holidays and book way before. Especially school holidays, two to three weeks before they already make their booking because they know last-minute booking is going to be very expensive," he said. 

"So when this thing happened, bam! It's like they dropped a bombshell. Headache." 

Vehicle entry permits will be mandatory for Singapore vehicles entering Malaysia from Oct 1. Vehicles will be fitted with a radio frequency identification tag that costs RM10.  

EU Holidays said its Malaysia tour packages, which make up about 10 per cent of its business, will likely increase in price.

Director Ong Han Jie told CNA the tour agency has  not decided how much the increase will be. The operators they work with in Malaysia also have not confirmed how much their prices will increase. 

"I feel that it's going to come in soon, but maybe not immediately, because we still have confirmed services to be rendered at the moment, so those that have already committed on the pricing will be delivered as per the pricing," said Mr Ong. 

The rise in diesel prices translates to a 40 per cent increase in the cost of running the coaches in their tours, he said. 

"For us, there is an increase in cost, but because the ringgit has depreciated against the Singapore dollar, in Singapore's context, personally I didn't feel that it's a very big problem."

Another tour agency which plans to increase the prices of its Malaysia packages is WTS Travel. 

The company organises coach tours to multiple destinations in Malaysia and also provides charter services. It has its own fleet of coaches but sometimes relies on subcontractors when its vehicles are fully booked. 

Senior business development manager Michael Gan said its subcontractors have already requested to increase their coach chartering prices. 

The company is still working out the amount of increase for its tour packages and coach charter services, he said.

Likewise, Singatour director Philip Gan said he is still waiting for coach charter contractors to confirm how much they will increase their prices.

Tours to Malaysia make up about 50 per cent of his business, with many of them needing coach charter services across the border or within Malaysia. 

Transport, including the cost of diesel, makes up 20 to 30 per cent of Singatour’s operational costs, he added. 

“We’ll look at the margins, if the difference is not much of an increase and if it’s manageable, we probably have to absorb it because the market is so competitive. 

“Let’s say if it increases by a few hundred dollars, then we really can’t take it, then we have to pass it on,” he said, adding that he may pass on a percentage of the increased costs to customers. 

THIN PROFIT MARGINS

Both EU Holidays' Mr Ong and Singapore Cab Booking's Mr Khan do not think that raising tour prices would have much impact on their business, as other companies are similarly affected.

The profit margin for tours and transport to Malaysia is slim. For example, the profit per customer for tours to Malaysia can sometimes be as low as S$3, said Mr Ong. 

"The entire industry will increase (prices). Nobody has that kind of profit ... if the cost is a significant increase, everyone will have to pass it to the consumer." 

Daily Cuts - Malaysia’s targeted diesel subsidies

Peninsular Tour Bus Operators Association president Steven Chong told The Star newspaper in Malaysia that operational costs will increase by up to 30 per cent with the diesel price hike. 

Operators also fear losing customers, who are mainly from overseas tour agencies, as the packages were quoted based on the subsidised diesel rates. 

“With this new rate, it will surely be more expensive, and we are afraid that the agents will not take up our offers,” he said, adding that a memorandum on the matter has been submitted to Malaysia’s Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister.

Malaysia's Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on Wednesday that the government was aware of tour bus operators' concerns about higher fuel prices, and that it would explore ways to help them following the removal of the subsidies. 

"The government intends to look at a mechanism in which we can assist this particular group because the announcement (of subsidy removal) came at a time when they had made certain arrangements,” he said.

FARMERS AND FRESH FOOD IMPORTS

The higher price of diesel may also hit food importers. A poultry association in Singapore told CNA that Malaysian suppliers have yet to confirm whether they still qualify for diesel subsidies.

If they do not qualify, local poultry businesses may have to raise prices depending on the supply and demand, said Mr Ma Chin Chew, secretary of Singapore's Poultry Merchants' Association and CEO of Hup Heng Poultry Industries. 

The higher costs will impact how competitive the price of Malaysian eggs can be compared to other sources like Ukraine, Turkey or Thailand, he said. 

Malaysia’s second minister for finance Amir Hamzah said that diesel for low-income groups, including fishermen and farmers, as well as for the use of school buses and ambulances, will continue to be subsidised. 

According to local media, about 68,000 farmers, 8,000 breeders and 34,000 small-scale agricultural workers are eligible for the BUDI agri-commodity subsidy scheme. About 300,000 diesel vehicle owners are eligible for the scheme targeted at individuals. 

As of Jun 6, more than 30,000 applications across both categories have been approved.
