Hannah Green wins LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for 2nd straight year

LOS ANGELES — Hannah Green won the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for the second straight year Sunday, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at challenging Wilshire Country Club.

A year after making a 25-foot birdie on the final hole of regulation and winning on the second hole of a playoff, Green — with help from Maja Stark — took the late drama out of this one for her fifth LPGA Tour victory and second of the year.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson leaderboard, scores: Reigning champion Jason Day three back of lead after Round 1

Jordan spieth also had a good, but not great, day at tpc craig ranch.

THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson - Round One

After a copious amount of rain delayed the beginning of the first round at TPC Craig Ranch for the 2024 edition of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, scoring plummeted as players took advantage of soft conditions.

Players who shot even 1 under found themselves well back of the lead with tons of ground to make up over the next three days. This is not unusual for this golf course, though the overnight rain surely made it play a bit easier than it otherwise would have.

Several golfers took full advantage of the 2-under scoring average, including Alex Noren, Jake Knapp, Taylor Pendrith and Round 1 leader Matt Wallace.

Let's take a closer look at the first round on Thursday.

1. Matt Wallace (-8)

The Englishman went out early and destroyed the golf course. Incredibly, he was not even top 40 in putting but still posted eight birdies on the day. The question, of course, is whether he can sustain the lead. Wallace does not have a top-15 finish anywhere in the world this year.

Wallace said he's still learning about his game and how to play it at the highest level, noting that he watched the Masters and took away a lot in terms of his mindset. That's something he'll try to use over the next three rounds.

"So, watching some of the best players in the world, and what I'm seeing from a lot of them, especially the younger guys, younger than me -- I'm not too old, but younger than me -- they're so focused in their shot and not worrying about the outcome or what's out there," said Wallace.

"That's what I'm trying to do now. So this might be test number 158 of me with a different round of golf. But taking care my business and my swing is the most important part, and I'm able to do that at the moment because I'm in a good place."

Other contenders

T2. Taylor Pendrith, Alex Noren, Chesson Hadley, Jake Knapp, Davis Riley (-7) T7. Alex Smalley, Hayden Buckley, Kelly Kraft (-6) T14. Justin Lower, Keith Mitchell, Jason Day (-5)

Day is a massive name among the current contenders. As a major champion, as well as the reigning winner of this very tournament, he has to be considered one of the handful of favorites going into the next three days. His day started hot with three birdies in his first five holes and mostly continued on the second nine. His big mishap came at the par-5 5th hole (he started on the back nine on the course), where he made a bogey 6 on a hole that was averaging close to 4.5 shots on the day.

Still, he's in good position to win for the first time in just under a year. It was a victory I thought could propel him for the rest of 2023, but Day has just five top 20s since that win at this course last May (albeit all five of them at really good events, including a T2 at the Open Championship).

Day said after his round that his approach play was better than it has been but that he has mixed feelings about having his coach, Chris Como, in town (Como lives in Dallas) because it can lead to obsessing over his swing from a technical standpoint. He noted that there are probably some other degenerates out there that can relate.

Can confirm: There are.

Spieth pops and then fades?

Jordan Spieth also birdied three of his first five and ran it all the way to 4 under through 13 holes before also making bogey at the par-5 5th hole. His 3-under 68 was decent and will have him in a good enough position going into the next 54 holes. Even more encouraging? The fact that he was solid from tee to green after a stretch of play that has, uh, not been so solid from tee to green.

"Started really nicely and then stalled," Spieth said. "You know, I snuck one on 4 but I thought I would maybe grab one on 3 and then [hole] five in. To play 1-over [on the last five holes] is kind of a bummer. You're looking to play those holes a couple under.

"It's a very gettable golf course," he continued. "Obviously very wet, but I just played the easy holes poorly; played the par-5s 1 over. That was kind of the story of the day. The par-5s you kind of need to be two-and-a-half-under out here each day. I'll have to make that back up."

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson updated odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Alex Noren: 8-1
  • Matt Wallace: 16-1
  • Jason Day: 16-1
  • Jake Knapp: 16-1
  • Ben An: 16-1
  • Taylor Pendrith: 18-1
  • Stephan Jaeger: 18-1
  • Min Woo Lee: 18-1

This is a board that is somewhat untouchable for me, but if I had to make a pick here I kind of like Wallace at 16-1. That's a nice number for somebody with the outright lead who didn't do it all with the putter. I like that better than everybody else shorter than 25-1. Keith Mitchell is intriguing at 25-1, and Si Woo Kim is interesting at 35-1.

Griffin Wood on where he’s played most of his professional golf to this point… “I've got a lot of mini tours in the U.S., played on the Dakotas Tour, I played everywhere, APT a little bit, the Asher Tour out in Phoenix and I played (PGA TOUR) Canada two years ago. I had conditional, so I played there half a season. Last year I had conditional, but I didn't get into anything. Yeah, so mostly in the U.S. I've been playing full time for about five years in total even though I'm a little older. I had to take some time off. A little later progression.”

Wood on what was behind his extended break from professional golf… “ I had a back injury where I couldn't play for a couple years. When I came back, I was not shooting 60s on courses. I had to work to support myself and try and get my game back and try and play as much as I could. I played one year out of college. So I graduated in 2012, played for a year. Played pretty well, like was ‑‑ so I kind of proved to myself I could do it in small mini tours. Then I got hurt right before Q‑School right out of college, it would have been 2013. Then I was off for a couple years and was kind of pedaling around for a while. I've been back for the last four, I'd say, playing pretty full time and trying to get back.”

Wood on the playoff at Monday’s open qualifier… “I was playing solid golf and I bogeyed my last hole in regulation. It was a pretty easy hole, and I was pretty devastated because I thought that would be the difference. But I rebounded really well, because after I made that bogey, you know, you can go south quick. Me and another guy, Matt Atkins, birdied the first hole in a 5‑for‑2 (playoff). I had my head on straight, that was the big thing, and I was able to play right after I finished. I went right to the playoff hole, which helped. We finished in the dark, we didn't have any more time to play another hole and it worked out perfectly.”

Additional Player Notes

  • Trent Phillips (3rd/-16) follows career-low 10-under 61 with 6-under 65 and shatters his previous career-low 36-hole score of 132/2023 BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX

USGA Will Welcome LIV Players to U.S. Open 'With Open Arms' If They Qualify

USGA CEO Mike Wahn spoke to Sports IIlustrated this week and confirmed that several LIV players are already exempt, and many others are set to try to qualify for a spot at the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

  • Author: Brian Giuffra

USGA CEO Mike Whan wants any golfer who's good enough to qualify to compete in the U.S. Open.

Yes, that includes everyone from LIV Golf.

Per U.S. Open tradition, players not exempt into the field must earn their spot through qualifying events. Anyone with a USGA Handicap Index of 0.4 or less can enter a local qualifier, advance to a 36-hole regional event and earn a spot. (Many top pros not already in the U.S. Open field are exempt from local qualifying and only need to advance via a 36-hole event.) Since 2004, the U.S. Open field has averaged 74.2 players who have advanced through one or both stages of qualifying.

One outspoken LIV player made it clear he is unwilling to try to qualify this year . Back to him shortly.

Speaking with Sports Illustrated at Lancaster Country Club, host of the this year's U.S. Women’s Open from May 30–June 2, Whan said he’s proud of the USGA’s uninhibited embrace of LIV Tour players competing in the U.S. Open and continues to welcome them "with open arms."

“One of the advantages we have versus most other championships in golf is, a lot of other championships call themselves open but we are the most open, meaning half of the spots in the U.S. Open are not held and are going to be filled by qualifying players,” Whan said.

“There is a good chunk of LIV players and other major winners who are already in and have played since LIV started playing and we're proud of that. But there are a lot of great players on the DP World Tour, the PGA Tour, the Korn Ferry Tour, and the Asian Tours that aren't in either and they have to go play 36 holes and try to qualify.”

LIV players Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Martin Kaymer, Tyrrell Hatton and Adrian Meronk are exempt and expected to play in the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort on June 13-16.

Former major champions and current LIV players Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel, Henrik Stenson and Graeme McDowell are among 35 players from LIV who will attempt to earn a spot in the field through final qualifying.

“We saw it last year, we had a pretty consequential amount of LIV players go to qualify,” Whan said. “We had players who went to qualify and got in and some went to qualify and didn't. The same will be true this year.”

One LIV player who isn’t attempting to qualify is Talor Gooch. He made waves ahead of the Masters by saying if Rory McIlroy were to have won the tournament to complete his career grand slam, “there’s just going to be an asterisk.” Gooch's reasoning was he and other LIV players weren’t in the field.

Gooch could have competed for a spot in the U.S. Open through qualifying. The USGA confirmed he did not enter and Gooch confirmed Thursday he will not attempt to qualify.

“When people talk about other majors, some of those majors are kind of full and the only way to get in is an invite,” Whan said. “In our case, half of our field is not only not full, it's wide open. If you're good enough to get in, we welcome you with open arms.”

Nelly Korda

She couldn’t do it again, could she?

We ended Sunday learning Nelly has air-tight cannonball form.

Korda started the Sunday marathon at The Club at Carlton Woods with less-than 33% win probability according to KPMG Performance Insights. Her dramatic chip-in at No. 10 pushed that number over 90% and would never look back.

Korda’s Historic Brilliance

During her streak, Korda is gaining an absurd 3.60 strokes per round on the competition, and that doesn’t even include her three match-play victories in Las Vegas. She has made birdie or eagle on 28.7% of her total holes played and is 46-under on par 5s. When she has hit the fairway on a par 4 or 5, she has gone on to hit the green in regulation a ridiculous 86% of the time. At Carlton Woods, she only missed five of 42 greens all week after hitting the fairway.

Korda was excellent through the bag in her victory, ranking third in strokes gained tee-to-green, fourth around the green, sixth off the tee and 12th in putting. Her lead over second-ranked Lydia Ko in strokes gained total per round this season is now larger than the gap between Ko and the 13th-best player in that metric.

In what will be horrifying news for her fellow competitors, Korda still has room to get even better. This season, she has one of the lowest putt make percentages from 5 to 10 feet among qualified players. There are six players on the LPGA Tour this season making a higher rate of birdie opportunities than Korda is. She ranks 102nd on Tour in one-putts per round. Her ball-striking prowess is such that she easily overcomes a miscue or two per round on the greens.

Korda has tied the record for most consecutive victories in LPGA Tour history with five, matching the historic runs of Nancy Lopez in 1978 and Annika Sorenstam in late 2004 into 2005. In her next tournament, Korda will have an opportunity to do what no player has accomplished in LPGA history by winning a sixth start in a row. Neither Lopez nor Sorenstam finished in the top 10 the week they went for number six: Lopez finished tied for 13th at the 1978 Lady Keystone Open, while Sorenstam finished T12 at Kingsmill.

Only once in the previous seven LPGA Tour seasons was there an instance of a player winning five or more times in an entire season – Jin Young Ko, who had five victories in 2021. No American player had won five or more times in a single LPGA Tour season since Juli Inkster in 1999. Korda did both of those things in a span of just five tournaments.

No American player has won six times in a single LPGA Tour season since Beth Daniel racked up seven victories in 1990, eight years before Korda was born. The superlatives are seemingly endless, and with so much golf left on the schedule this year, one must wonder how high her star will ascend before 2024 is completed. Just 25, Korda is the youngest American player to win multiple majors since Inkster in 1984.

Coughlin’s Breakthrough

Before last week, Lauren Coughlin had a career scoring average in major championships of 73.4. While she undoubtedly was under the radar as a possible contender, several of her underlying statistics suggested that a big week was on the horizon.

KPMG Performance Insights provide a deeper understanding of the number of improvements in Coughlin’s game. She entered last week up 16 spots this season compared to 2023 in strokes gained total, 29 spots in strokes gained tee to green, and a whopping 76 spots in strokes gained putting. Though she didn’t yet have a top-five finish on the season, Coughlin had gained more than a stroke with her ball striking in almost half of her rounds played.

In Houston, Coughlin put everything together, gaining more than six strokes on the field in both round one and round four. In the final round, she gained strokes in every facet of her game, showcasing the improvements those statistics suggested. Coughlin’s tie for third place moved her into ninth in the U.S. Solheim Cup standings.

Third Round to Remember

The round of the week belonged to Brooke Henderson, whose lightning-interrupted 64 wrapped up with one last hole on Sunday morning. Henderson gained more than 7.5 shots on the competition in the round, by far her most to date in 2024. In rounds one and two, the Canadian star made a combined 107 feet of putts. She made an astronomical 139 feet worth in round three.

Henderson already has more top-10 finishes this season (five) than she did in all of 2023 on the LPGA Tour. She is one of just three players averaging two or more strokes gained per round in 2024, alongside Korda and Lydia Ko. She has had more rounds this year where she was five or more strokes better than the field (four) than she has rounds where she lost strokes (three).

Off the tee, Henderson’s incremental improvements have started to add up. Henderson is hitting the fairway at a 4% higher rate than last year yet has not sacrificed any length with driver. That has led to her gaining 0.74 strokes off the tee per round this season, more than doubling what she did in 2023 and ninth best of any player on the LPGA Tour.

If anybody is going to stop Nelly Korda next month at Lancaster Country Club, Henderson is as good a candidate as any. The U.S. Women’s Open begins on May 30.
