Last night, April 25, Dave Matthews Band closed out a highly-anticipated two-night run at London’s hallowed Royal Albert Hall, marking a definite highlight in its 2024 European tour as it winds towards the end of the run. These high-profile performances exceeded sky-high expectations with two expansive sets of fan favorites loaded with covers, teases and interpolations. With the added excitement of a surprise special guest appearance from Robben Ford and a long-awaited bust-out of “Dreamgirl,” the band properly honored its first European tour since 2019 with an unforgettable set of shows.

DMB’s London pair commenced on Wednesday, April 24, following an opening set from rising UK-based singer-songwriter Myles Smith, who has garnered acclaim for his eclectic blend of influences, including folk, pop, Americana and Afroswing. Once the stage was thoroughly warmed, Matthews kicked off the main portion of the concert with the live classic “One Sweet World,” which has figured into the band’s repertoire every year since 1991. The band continued with “The Dreaming Tree,” featuring its typical interpolation of early YouTube viral sensation “Chocolate Rain,” then moved through “Madman’s Eyes,” “Virginia in the Rain” and “The Best of What’s Around,” the latter two of which featured unique extended outros.

Further interpolations of “Also Spach Zarathrustra,” “Heartbreaker,” “Blackbird” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” appeared in DMB standards like “Anyone Seen the Bridge,” “Crush” and “So Damn Lucky” before a tour debut of “American Baby Intro.” Then, Matthews welcomed legendary blues and fusion guitarist Ford to join the ensemble onstage for a collaborative treatment of “Satellite” and roaring 12-minute “Jimi Thing.” Shortly after this first-time sit-in, Matthews closed out the set with 1998’s “Don’t Drink the Water,” then returned with an encore of “Grey Street.”

Dave Matthews Band took the stage once more on Thursday, erupting into the Under the Table and Dreaming classic “Warehouse” to set off night two. After mixing an interpolation of “I Can’t Help Falling in Love” into The Stone,” the band made bold use of its historic setting as keyboardist Buddy Strong mounted the venue’s Grand Organ, playing a dramatic fake-out intro to “Madman’s Eyes” before accompanying the band on a tour debut of “Minarets.”

Following continued teases of “Dixie Chicken,” “Wonderful Tonight,” “Sojourn of Arjuna” and “You Can’t Rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd,” the band closed out its set with “Ants Marching,” which featured a solo intro by Carter Beauford and an interpolation of The Jacksons’ “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground).” The band finally capped off the series with an epic encore, beginning with a bust-out of fan-favorite “Dreamgirl,” which was last staged over five years ago, and concluding with a blend of “All Along the Watchtower” and “Stairway to Heaven.”

Dave Matthews Band will return to the stage tomorrow, April 27, for a performance at Dublin, Ireland’s 3 Arena, then stage four final dates in the European Tour before kicking off its US summer tour on May 22. For more information on the band’s upcoming engagements, visit davematthewsband.com .

Peter Frampton on His Rock Hall Induction: ‘My Phone Hasn’t Stopped Blowing Up’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

After three decades of eligibility where he didn’t appear on a single ballot, Peter Frampton was starting to think he’d never be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . But once voters finally had to chance to select him earlier this year, things changed very quickly. He learned the good news over the weekend when his manager phoned him up to say he made it. “I was absolutely blown away,” Frampton says. “My mind has been sort of a blur ever since I found out, especially since the announcement [on American Idol ] last night. My phone hasn’t stopped blowing up since.”

The afternoon after the news broke, Frampton spoke with Rolling Stone about the Hall of Fame, his fellow inductees, what he’s planning for the big night, upcoming tour plans, his battle with inclusion body myositis, and his hope that Cher changes her mind and shows up on induction night.

The thing that blew me away the most was not actually getting in — even though that is a phenomenal, unbelievable thing. It’s the amount of people who voted for me [in the fan vote]. You don’t quite understand where you’re at until you look at the amount of people who voted for you. Those are the people I need to thank the most. That was a real wonderful shock.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

I think part of the problem is that rock critics had a huge voice in the nominating process for a long time. You had such an insanely big record in the Seventies, and it attracted so many young fans, that you maybe turned off some critics. Yeah. Sometimes you can be too big. Hootie & the Blowfish, same thing. You have this ginormous selling record, and it works against you. It becomes too much of a good thing. Framptom Comes Alive! turned into Rubik’s Cube very quickly. Look what happened to that. But I can open one of those very quickly now since I’ve learned the secret.

Had you attended an induction before last year? I went when Metallica got in. It was a much smaller event in those days compared to last year’s. I’ve watched every one, all the inductees over the years, whether it be live or on film. I always thought, “Maybe… Who knows?”

It’s a cool class this year with Cher, Foreigner, Dave Matthews, Ozzy… It’s very cool. I think because of the new team that’s running it, headed by John Sykes…having known a little bit and spoken with some of them, things were not that realistic before…there were a lot of missed opportunities before, and some artists that weren’t maybe ready to go in.

Ozzy Osbourne on Rock Hall Induction: 'I'm Happy I'm Alive To See This'

Lou gramm on foreigner's long-awaited rock hall induction: 'justice has been done', kool & the gang sang 'celebration' when they learned they entered the rock and roll hall of fame.

I loved seeing John Mayall’s name. He really deserves it. Absolutely. There I was in the front row of the Flamingo Club in London watching him and Eric Clapton, and him and Peter Green. I would always go up there. He has always been a champion of so many incredible guitar players, as well as being this guy that never faltered, never went commercial, never did anything but the blues. I applaud him for that. He very much deserves to get in.

There’s also people that grumble about R&B and hip-hop artists getting inducted. To me, it makes perfect sense to bring in Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest. Maybe it should be called the Music Hall of Fame as opposed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They’re king of stuck now. But I agree. Mary J. Blige is an unbelievable talent. They definitely both deserve to get in.

Shortly before she was placed on the ballot, Cher basted the Hall of Fame and said she wouldn’t go even if she got in. I’m hoping she changes her mind. Oh, go on, Cher! We want you there. It’s okay. Look at how long I waited. I didn’t wait as long as you, but it’s okay. You’re in now. You’re in! Come on, Cher! [ Laughs ]

Do you have any thoughts on who might induct you or what songs you might play? Not right now. I haven’t been told. The basic thing I need to be told is how long musically I have, and how long speech-wise I have. And then I can make those decisions. I obviously have people in mind, but I haven’t spoken to anybody yet.

It’s going to be in Cleveland, which is pretty cool since it’s a great rock town, and you have so many fans there. Oh yeah. I’ve always loved Cleveland. I did my time in Cincinnati for a while. I lived there. They can’t take the Ohio out of me.

How do you think it’ll feel to stand at the podium, take the award, and finally give your speech? Oh, my stomach turned over when you said that. [ Laughs ] I don’t know. I’ll prepare for that moment. With great gratitude, I’ll step up to that microphone and accept what I never thought would happen for me.

You just finished a tour a few weeks back. How did that go? Fantastic. In fact, it looks like we’re going to do another two-week run sometime in the summer. I don’t have any info right now. It’s been incredible going back out after I quit. [ Laughs ] I think the crowds are so behind me since I don’t want to give up. I am a fighter. I’m going to be playing until that time comes when I can’t.

We all have our battles. We’re all fighting something. I’m just a person who is out there, doing the best he can, and brining awareness to IBM [inclusion body myositis], raising money where I can. We’ve got a lovely foundation at Johns Hopkins, the Peter Frampton Fund . People are still sending in money, which is wonderful. It’ll help us with clinical trials. Those are expensive. I’m raising money for them so we can find that magic bullet.

I’m very optimistic. I’m speaking with my doctors all the time, and hearing all the new stuff that’s coming along, and the new technologies the scientists are finding in the lab. It looks like something could be coming around the corner. We’re always hoping for that.

If your voice works and your hand works, why shouldn’t you be onstage? Exactly. I really want to share my time between three things right now. I have a record to make. I’ve been writing for six years or more. I have material up the yin yang. But only a few classics. [ Laughs ] I’m waiting a little longer, another month or two, and then I’m going to go in the studio.

In June, I’m going to England to do some stuff for my documentary. We’re going to go back to where I was born, and where I went to school with David Bowie, and the house where my brother and I grew up. We were doing some interviews with people last week in Los Angeles for the doc. We now have full funding. It’s full steam ahead. Those three projects are what we’re working on this year.

I would love to see Soungarden get in too. Oh my God. They’re not in?

It’s great seeing Ozzy Osbourne get in solo this year. He deserves to be in twice. I agree. The man is the Betty White of rock & roll. [ Laughs ]

It would be fun to see you play “Crazy Train” with him. That would be fantastic. Let’s see what happens.

2024 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees

  • Malcolm X Abram, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – It’s Cleveland’s turn to host the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions this year. So, who will be coming to the party?

The 2024 inductees were announced Sunday night on “American Idol” and it’s a star-studded list, with Cher, the Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Kool & The Gang, Mary J. Blige, Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Frampton and Tribe Called Quest honored in the Performer category.

There are also plenty of legends in the side categories. Dionne Warwick, Jimmy Buffett, Detroit punk pioneers the MC5 and the Motown songwriter and producer Norman Whitfield will be honored with the Musical Excellence Award.

British blues legends John Mayall and Alexis Korner will receive the Music Influence Award, along with American blues-rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton. The Ahmet Ertegun Award, given to non-performing industry professionals who have had a major influence on the creative development and growth of rock ‘n’ roll, is being award to film and music producer Suzanne de Passe.

People who voted online in the Rock Hall’s Fan Vote are hopefully pleased that six of the top 8 artists in the poll are being inducted in the Class of 2024.

Rock Hall President and CEO Greg Harris praised the expanded list and the artists who will be welcomed to the Hallowed Hall of Rock.

“There are so many deserving artists out there, and I am very pleased that the committees and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation went with a bigger class model. It’s a chance to recognize more, and every single person being inducted is highly deserving,” Harris said.

“I love that we’re formally recognizing Big Mama Thornton,” he continued. “I really think that’s terrific. And also that A Tribe Called Quest is going to be in. I think that’s important and it’s powerful, and they were consistently nominated, and to see them get over the top is really exciting. You could say the same about the MC5, but I could say that about every single artist on this list. There’s a lot of great ones, and each one has a story,” he said.

The inductees were announced on Sunday’s “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” episode of ABC’s “American Idol,” with the show’s 14 finalists performing songs from Rock Hall legends. Longtime “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest made the announcement, along with judge and Rock Hall inductee Lionel Richie.

The 2024 inductions will be held Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, which also hosted the last ceremony in Cleveland in 2021. The inductions will stream live on Disney+ , with an edited special airing on ABC at a later date and streaming on Hulu the day after that.

Tickets for the inductions will go on sale later this year. The Rock Hall said that select donors and members will receive exclusive offers to purchase for induction tickets but must donate to the museum or become a museum member before June 30 to be eligible. Go to rockhall.com/membership for more information.

Cher, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang and Peter Frampton were on the ballot for the first time. But all of them have been eligible for nomination for decades.

To be eligible, an artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Cher, who released her first recording with Sonny & Cher in 1965, has been eligible for nomination since 1991. Kool & The Gang has been eligible since 1995, Frampton since 1998, Foreigner since 2003.

Cher made note of the Rock Hall snub in an appearance on the “Kelly Clarkson Show” in 2023 as Clarkson and her studio audience gasped.

“Wait, are you serious?” Clarkson asked the singer.

“I’m not kidding you,” Cher said. “I was about to say s******* you! You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”

It will be interesting to see if Cher sticks to her promise or softens her stance and shows up in Cleveland.

Buffett, who released his first recording in 1970 and has been eligible since 1996, has never been nominated despite being one of the most popular and influential singer-songwriters and concert performers of the rock era.

Giving him his flowers in the Musical Excellence category is a fine way to right a wrong, but fans might argue that it would have been better to have come sooner and while Buffett, who died in 2023, was still alive to enjoy it.

Five of the 16 inductees are women, two in the main Performer category. That’s more than in many years, but is not likely to quiet critics who say the Rock Hall hasn’t done enough to induct women over the years. Five of this year’s 15 Performer nominees were women, but Mariah Carey, Sinead O’Connor and Sade didn’t make the cut.

Other nominees left out in the cold this year were Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Oasis and Lenny Kravitz.

Still, it’s a diverse class musically, ranging from hip-hop (Mary J. Blige and Tribe Called Quest) to classic rock (Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Frampton and Foreigner) to points in between (Cher, Kool & The Gang and Dave Matthews Band).

“This year’s inductees have broken down musical barriers and elevated their craft throughout their careers,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “From the early days of hip-hop to enduring innovation and impact, this year’s class brings phenomenal depth and breadth to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

Here’s an indepth look at this year’s class:

Cher

The senior member of the 2024 performance class at age 77. The singer-actor has been on the music scene since 1965 with her husband, songwriter Sonny Bono, and had an early hit with “I Got You Babe.” Much more recently, Cher has reminded everyone, including Rock Hall voters, that she is one of only two artists to have at least one chart-topping single in each of the past seven decades along with The Rolling Stones. Among those chart-toppers are 1971′s “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “If I Could Turn Back Time” in the late 1980s, the trendsetting auto-tune infused dance track “Believe” in the ‘90s and several dance chart-toppers this century, including “Song for the Lonely” and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.” Even her Holiday song, “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic chart.

Must Hear Music: “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves” (1971), “Heart of Stone” (1989). Honorable mention, “I’ve Got You Babe (with Beavis and Butthead),” “The Beavis and Butthead Experience (1993).

Dave Matthews Band

The long-running pop-jam band still regularly tours arenas and amphitheaters, making a near-annual appearance at Blossom Music Center, and has had a string of hits across its 20-plus-year history. The DMB also led the Rock Hall Fan Vote from start to finish thanks to a hardcore following and past hits such as “Funny The Way It Is,” “Crash” and “The Space Between.”

Foreigner

The arena-rock band ruled the charts and the road in the late ‘70s and ‘80s. But longtime lead singer Lou Gramm didn’t think the band would ever get into the Rock Hall because of biases among music-industry voters and critics. But the band’s track record is undeniable with popular classic rock radio and playlist staples such as “Head Games,” “Feels Like The First Time,” and the surprise 1984 mega-hit soft-ballad, “I Wanna Know What Love Is.”

Must Hear Music: “Double Vision,” (1978), “4″ (1981)

Kool & The Gang

Kool & The Gang

Perhaps the most pleasantly surprising entry on the 2024 list, Kool & The Gang are best known for their massive 1980 crossover hit, “Celebration.” But the big R&B band was an influential funk monster in the ‘70s with jams including, “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging,” before reaching for crossover success in the early ‘80s with slick dance floor movers and Top 10 hits, including “Ladies’ Night” and “Cherish” and “Too Hot” and beloved R&B jams such as “Get Down On It,” and “Steppin’”.

Mary J. Blige

Still known by her Gen-X fans and peers as the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul,” Blige, initially under the wing of then-budding impresario Sean “Puffy” Combs, embodied that title across the ‘90s and 2000s by successfully bridging the gap between rap and R&B. Her hits included “Real Love,” and songs about relationships good and bad, including “You Remind Me,” “Love No Limit,” and “Not Gon’ Cry,” among others.

Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne

The only inductee on the list who is already an inductee as the lead singer of Black Sabbath’s “classic lineup.” Osbourne left the heavy metal legends and embarked on his solo career with two classic ‘80s metal albums, “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary of A Madman.” He introduced most of the world to beloved and influential guitarist Randy Rhoads and other six-string warriors, including Zakk Wylde. Ozzy was a regular on the hard-rock and metal charts throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s with platinum albums, including “No More Tears” “Bark At The Moon,” and “Ozzmosis.”

Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton

The former Humble Pie guitarist who went solo and after a few years became a massive star with his 1976 “Frampton Comes Alive,” album, which has gone eight-times platinum on the strength of hits, including “Do You Feel Like We Do,” “Show Me The Way,” and “Baby I Love Your Way.” Since his ‘70s heyday as a maligned pop star, Frampton’s guitar skills and continued artistry have garnered him the critical respect he was denied during his days wearing kimonos on album covers.

A Tribe Called Quest

One of the most important and influential groups in hip -hop’s transition from an underground genre to mainstream acceptance in the ‘90s. Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and sometime-member Jarobi White kept much of the misogyny and violence out of their music and lyrics. Emcees Q-Tip and Phife-Dawg’s smooth lyrics mixed the philosophical and afro-futuristic with the grounded around-the-way rhymes. Q-Tip and Muhammad’s warm but snappy jazz-sampling and jazz-inspired beats inspired a generation of producers.

Must Hear Music: “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm” (1990), “Midnight Marauders (1993)

Alexis Korner

Musical Influence Award

Alexis korner.

One of the most influential figures in the British blues scene of the 1960s, Korner died in 1985 at age 55. His early 60′s band, Blues Incorporated, counted among its members future Cream legends bassist-singer Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker as well as influential keyboardist Graham Bond and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. Korner also worked with a young lion-maned singer named Robert Plant who he would introduce to Jimmy Page, the former guitarist of The Yardbirds, who would recruit the singer for a new band that would become Led Zeppelin. Korner was also a popular broadcaster and music writer.

John Mayall

Another extremely important figure in the British blues scene whose band John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers counted many of the scene’s most important players and future rock stars, including Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green and bassist John McVie and future Rolling Stone Mick Taylor. The singer, guitarist and harmonica player, who turns 91 this year, kept performing into the 2020s.

Big Mama Thornton

Big Mama Thornton

The induction of blues singer-songwriter Wilie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton is long overdue. She is the original singer of the early rock n’ roll classic “Hound Dog,” written by the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller specifically for her. Thornton wrote and recorded “Ball and Chain” which so transfixed a young, up-and-coming singer named Janis Joplin that she asked for permission to record the song, which became a big hit and one of Joplin’s signature tunes. It is included in ncluded in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.”

Musical Excellence Award

Dionne Warwick

Dionne Warwick

The classy singer with the velvety contralto, scored more than 50 songs in the Top 100 between the early 1960s and the late ‘90s, including a dozen tunes that made the Top 10. Warwick was the hand-picked vocalist by songwriters and producers Burt Bacharach and Hal David, for whom she recorded several hits, including “Don’t Make Me Over,” “Walk On By,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” “Wishin’ and Hopin, “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” and more. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Warrick had a commercial comeback with “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,’ appeared on “We Are The World,” and had a hit with the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) benefit single “That’s What Friends are For.” She’s earned six Grammys and numerous other awards across her storied career and is she is the second-most charted woman vocalist of the rock and roll era.

Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett

The beloved singer-songwriter, wildly successful entrepreneur and musical lifestyle coach died in 2023, leaving behind legions of “Parrotheads” entranced by his “tropical rock,” or “drunken Caribbean rock ‘n’ roll” as he described it, and songs about taking it easy and escaping the drudgery of the modern work world encompassed by his best-known song, “Margaritaville.” Buffet’s and his Coral Reefer Band had several breezy hits include “Cheeseburgers In Paradise,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,’ “Fins,’ and “One Particular Harbour.”

MC5

The members of MC5 BPN

Another long overdue induction for these six-time nominees. The MC5 were a crew of crazed, Detroit lefties who imbued their guitar-driven music with an energy unmatched by their peers when they burst on the scene in 1969 with their oft-covered single “Kick Out The Jams.” The band raged against the establishment machine and never reached commercial heights, but across the years they have come to be appreciated for inspiring a couple of generations of musicians and their influence on hard rock, punk and heavy metal, is undeniable. Only one original member, drummer Dennis Thompson is still living.

Norman Whitfield

R&B songwriter and producer Norman Whitfield poses for a publicity still circa 1969. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images) Michael Ochs Archives

Norman Whitfield

One of the many hitmaking songwriters and producers for Motown, Whitfield was behind numerous hits, including a string of classics by the Temptations, “Cloud Nine,” “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg,” “I Can’t Get Next To You,” and “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” to name few. Whitfield also brought expanded the Motown sound with “psychedelic soul” into

Ahmet Ertegun Award

Suzanne de passe.

A crucial behind-the-scenes figure at Motown, de Passe was instrumental in discovering and developing Motown stars, including The Jackson 5, Rick James, The Commodores, Debarge and others and served as president of Motown Productions, one of the first women to head a major label division. De Passe also spearheaded the label’s film and television division which earned her a Oscar nomination for the screenplay of “Ladie Sings The Blues,” and oversaw the “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever” television special that skyrocketed Michael Jackson’s solo career.
